A second Sony Ericsson handset has encountered software problems in the run up to Christmas after so

A second Sony Ericsson handset has encountered software problems in the run up to Christmas after some customers reported issues with the company’s Aino model. However, the mobile phone developer has dismissed concerns that it will be forced into another product recall.

Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U suspended sales of the mobile phone maker’s Satio handset earlier this week due to technical problems. However, reports that a similar fate has befallen the Aino, a touch-screen phone that can be used as a remote control for Sony’s PlayStation3 games console, represent another blow to the company’s Christmas line up.

Richard Dorman, senior marketing manager at Sony Ericsson, said that a small number of customers had encountered problems with the touch-screen due to a software glitch but nothing on the scale of the Satio. “The product is still in store and has not been recalled,” he stressed.

Nevertheless, the Aino problems provide a further headache for the Japanese-Swedish joint venture company as it fights to get the Satio back in stores in time for Christmas. The company is still advertising the flagship product, which has a 12 megapixel camera, despite the software issues.

Unlike the Satio, which has sold very well over recent months, the Aino has only sold in “limited” volumes according to the company. Nonetheless, it will further increase the perception of quality issues related to its product line after numerous high-profile issues last year and the Satio recall.

The Satio and Aino are key products for Sony Ericsson as it attempts to improve the decline in its market share over the past eighteen months. It reported a €199 million loss in the third quarter. Its market share has dwindled to around 5 per cent and has cut 2,000 jobs this year on top of 2,000 job losses last year. It hopes to return to profitability next year with the launch of the X10, its first handset based on Google’s Android operating system.

Tips

1. BING as BB Default Search Tool?

You can change the “Default Search Provider” through the Browser \ Options \ Browser Configuration. To change this to search Bing.com you need to specify ‘Live Search’. There is an RIM request in place to have the handheld code change Live Search to Bing.com with the correct display icon and this change is currently targeted for later in 5.0 handheld. Unfortunately, there are not any IT policies or other BES side setting which could be used to make this change on all devices.

2. Verizon Call Forwarding

Immediate Call Forwarding:

3. Tel: on Bold Not Working

RIM confirmed TEL: format works on all devices except the Bold.
The format is… Tel:8666578888,,2188888#,,*,,8888#,,1
Good news is that it is fixed on the new Bold v5+ operating system.
The bad news v5 for Bold hasn’t a solid ETA, so could be a few weeks or months.

4. How Can I Quickly Delete 800 Messages from my BB?

On most newer BB devices, you can scroll to the top, hit the menu button, and select “delete prior”, but be careful it doesn’t sync the delete unexpectedly to Outlook (BB > messages > options > email reconciliation > delete on = handheld).

BlackBerry

5. BlackBerry Will Remain Market Leader Through 2014

Google’s Android OS-based phones and Apple’s iPhone maybe get all the media love, but one analyst firm believes that it will be RIM’s BlackBerry that will be the smartphone king of the U.S. market in five years. Pyramid Research expects the device to be the biggest beneficiary of the move to smartphones.GigaOm

Research in Motion has expanded its alliance with Adobe as well as made it easier for developers to insert ads into their applications for BlackBerry smartphones, RIM said. While RIM and Adobe had previously disclosed plans to bring Flash to the device, the partners Monday outlined ways to help developers use Adobe’s tools to simplify the integration of images, video and graphics into their software.InformationWeek /Reuters

7. BB App World to Offer Carrier Billing in 2010

BlackBerry App World will see carrier billing by 2010. Carrier billing would make it easier for BlackBerry customers to purchase applications on their phones. As it stands, BlackBerry users have to enter PayPal credentials, which some say inhibits spontaneous purchases. Wireless Week

Tunggu tulisan berikutnya… hehehe… biar gak penasaran, liat spec-nya dulu aja deh

Earlier this week, a rumor buzzed around that there would soon be a new hand-held mobile technology strictly meant for twittering. Well, the rumors were true as the creators behind Peek, an email-only mobile device, have now created TwitterPeek, the mobile device meant for the sole reason of twittering. Not for checking email, sending text messages, or making calls, but just twittering.

I know that Twitter has exponentially grown as a very valuable social media tool since its beginning; I realize that the popularity of Twitter itself gradually increased over time, as people didn’t realize its potential until later; however, I don’t believe that a device only meant to read, send, and receive tweets will gain much popularity. With the growing capabilities of cell phones like that of the iPhone and BlackBerry, what’s the need and/or desire of carrying another gadget around that has limited use. The TwitterPeek doesn’t have a web browser so one wouldn’t even be able to click on the numerous websites and other links that are shared via tweets. With all of the various Twitter applications accessible through phones, there is no viable use of the TwitterPeek. I don’t see this technology going very far or being very successful. With all that cell phones can do today, people won’t mind paying the more expensive bills rather than paying less for a device that does so little. I guess time will tell if the TwitterPeek device will succeed or not.

ZiiLABS, subsidiary of home-grown Creative, released the first Android firmware for its Zii EGG device based on Android v1.6. (aka Donut). Folks over at AnythingButiPod had their hands on the Android firmware, hands-on review in video can be seen here.

The firmware is meant for OEMs and developers to begin testing Android software on the Zii prototype unit. The Zii-optimised Android has noticeably fluid visual transition, but it’s probably far from market-ready as other vital features such as camera, GPS, multi-touch, etc are not supported at this point.

The market may one day overwhelmed with feature packed Zii-optimised Android PMPs and phones of different make if Zii chip is taken up by “Shanzai” manufacturers.

Now I know we’re nowhere near Easter, nor am I a Christian. So instead of calling it Lent, I’ll simply call it Skint. Pretty much what I am. And this got me thinking when paying my O2 bill online a few days ago. My contract is up for renewal in February 2010. So, could I, after all these years, give up my mobile phone? For 10 years now I’ve been paying £35 a month, which equates to £420 a year. That means I’ve forked out £4200 in total, in that 10 year period. Seems like a lot, doesn’t it? It certainly is when all I do is send a few text messages. My plan consists of 500 free texts and 600 anytime minutes. However, come the end of the month, I usually have 597 minutes remaining. And that’s simply because I hate conversing on the telephone. I never have done. I doubt I ever will. I avoid answering it at all costs. So each and every month my 600 minutes are completely wasted. Now I know I could just grab myself a pay-as-you-go and be done with it. But to be honest, my life really isn’t that exciting, the same way my social life isn’t exactly inundated with offers which means a handset becomes a necessity. No-one ever gets in touch with me and vice versa. I think I’d be better off saving my £35 a month to spend it on the things I really couldn’t live without. The internet.

I don’t know. Maybe if there was a lovely young lady in my life I could stay up all night talking to, then I might just change my mind. After all, a spot of phone sex never hurt anyone. For now though, I’ll continue to send a few text messages and ignore calls. Until February anyway.

LG-GD910, probably the world’s first fashion watch with 3G video calling capability, goes on sale today in Singapore. According to LG’s press release, although the wrist phone is available from all three operators here, there are only 800 units to be sold here in selected retail outlets – namely SingTel at ION Orchard, M1 at Paragon, and StarHub at Plaza Singapura.

From the press release:

The final product that LG engineers unveiled wasn’t only small, it included all the features found in some of today’s most advanced mobile phones: compatibility with 3G HSDPA networks, video calling capability, MP3 player, speaker phone, water resistance and Bluetooth.

Unlike in the movies, holding a watch phone up to one’s mouth when making a call is far from practical or comfortable. Bluetooth technology is a key component that makes LG’s Watch Phone a practical reality today and far less conspicuous when taking a call in public. The LG GD910 Touch Watch Phone also incorporates LG’s most advanced voice recognition and text-to-speech technology allowing for voice commands.
“I believe the LG Watch Phone will be a hit among Singaporeans who are among the most technologically-savvy in the world,” said Jeff Cheh, Managing Director, LG Electronics Singapore. “The multi-functional capabilities of the LG GD910 Touch Watch Phone strongly reinforces LG’s position as a leader in technology innovation.”

SingTel is accepting order of LG GD910 from its online storefront, retailing from SGD 738 with 2 years’ plan - see here.
