A Propensity

It’s been no time and all time.
But,
a frail ink tears out of my pen
to rain this page
with the sere memory of you
(Swan)
and knowing that our days passed by
as the quick game of pool we’ve played
over a beer and a shot of Jack;
I’ll see you on the dust-kicked road
to Greece and a hermitage that you
would share with me.
But,
Rather than lose the wars,
they settled on the spoils of boredom.
But,
Rather than lose faith,
they twisted your spine
into a hangman’s knot to die
(and die)
in the corner by your restless jacket.
But,
It’s been no time and all time.

But perhaps I have jumped into things too quickly. I haven’t really had much of a chance to explain that yes, I successfully made

Airport in São Miguel. Sort of classy for an airport, eh?

it though a wonderful week in the Azores (which I’m sure you all will hear plenty about, especially when I’m sitting in my lonesome back home in DC, whenever that is), arrived in São Tomé, learned how to type accents on my new computer, and, well, have just been having a heck of a time.

I took a plane from Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel in the Azores to Lisbon, then stayed with my cousins Marina and Sérgio and their adorable new bundle of baby, Santiago, for a couple of days. After getting a small preview of the awesome effects of Doxycycline if not swallowed under its very specific and rigid guidelines (I say “preview” because there was much more to come but two weeks later), I hit the airport again, bags ready to go, toting a spartan number of tank tops and shorts, a disproportionate weight of candy and books, and a really nice bottle of Azorean wine to give to my gracious host, Ned.

All this was in the forefront of my mind when we traveled from the little mini airport shuttle at nearly midnight towards our plane, an odd time for a flight and a totally disorganized system of boarding that even seemed a little out of the ordinary for Portugal, a country I once lambasted for its own lack of efficiency and charm. I couldn’t help but wonder if Portugal and São Tomé were still on hesitant (if not hostile) terms.

My wondering was quickly floored by awe as we approached our plane, a once-a-week luxury of TAP Portugal, and, clear as anything else I’d ever read in my life, in letters the size of people, the name of the plane reads:

WHITE

No, this is not a joke. But you might think the following is: Below it reads:

Coloured by You

White, Coloured by You, courtesy of the White website- http://www.flywhite.eu

Good Lord, how I wish I could make this stuff up.

I could hardly keep myself from laughing. I’m sure people thought I was crazy. The plane is called WHITE? And it’s colored by…what…a rainbow of singing, dumb Africans that somehow, at the right time, just showed up for the plane trip of their lives??

Well, what do you do?

You say, okay! We’re getting on this huge, phallic machine called WHITE, and we’re going to penetrate virgin Mother Afrika at 400 miles per hour.

My life in São Tomé has been peppered with little bits that make me laugh like this. What else CAN you do when a country’s history of European control is so recent (they only became independent in the mid-1970s)? Not only this, but their whole home, their entire history began as an overflow zone for starving Cape Verdeans in an overpopulated island to contract into honest work, only to be deceived and thrown into slavery. How do you come to terms with that when it’s something the Santomenses deal with every day of their life?

Among a few English classes, some translations, some great friend-making (I love standing out; I feel like people in the USA never remember my face but here everyone knows who I am) and other things, the thing that keeps me busy here (and what I originally arrived for) was to help an incredible NGO called STeP UP (São Tomé e Príncipe Union for Promotion) coordinate and work out the kinks of a very generous donation by the One Laptop Per Child Program to a local middle school in the capital. About 90 very excited twelve year olds were handed an amazingly efficient, durable, and inexpensive laptop computer that is complete with photo/video camera, microphone, a swivel frame, multiple USB ports and wireless internet access (you can buy one for yourself or any child for $250, and included in this $250 is the donation of a laptop to a child in a poor country as well- how about that!). I’m here to learn the OLPC platform and teach it to teachers and students alike, then facilitate a way for them to incorporate these computers in their everyday learning environment (both in school and at home).

Yesterday was my first day of class with the kids themselves. While we waited in hopes that the energy would turn back on

The kids wait for the energy to come back on in class. And go camera-happy while we wait

(something that is horribly unreliable and inconsistent, and often just doesn’t work at all), the poor kids waited, say 75 of them, crowded into one classroom, for hours. I couldn’t leave them there so I thought I would at least get their attention and play some games- whatever I could think of on my feet, really- 7 Up, red light green light (outside), and, my favorite, Hangman.

At least it was my favorite, until I suddenly wanted to simultaneously laugh and cry. Here I am, a white woman, of Portuguese descent nonetheless, teaching these African children a really great spelling game that incorporates lynching. I am certainly going to Hell.

Either the kids never picked up the reference, or someone Up There was on my side yesterday, because the kids actually loved the game and it occupied a solid 30 minutes of our time. But good grief, what a trip. I had played my own race card, and it was a wild card, and here I am in Africa, and, from now on, Hangman is going to be something much, much less violent.

“Mommy?” A little voice woke Mother out of her reverie. “Mommy?” “Yes, dear.” Her voice was shaking.

“Mommy?” A little voice woke Mother out of her reverie. “Mommy?”

“Yes, dear.” Her voice was shaking. Stop that!

She looked up desperately at Hangman, but his eyes were dead and cold.

“Yes, dear.” She managed a small smile. That’s better. Still a little shaky though.

“Don’t worry, sweetie. It’ll only hurt for a second, I promise.”

“Where’s Daddy? I want Daddy.”

“He’s got to work, sweetie.” He’s right behind you, if only you could see him. Please, Hangman. Not this. Please?

“But I don’t like getting shots.”

“It’s okay, sweetie, I know what I’m doing.” Oh, do I ever. Please?

Numb, she prepared the first needle.

“Who’s first?”

“I will. He’s too chicken.” Angel hadn’t spoken all day.

“Am not!”

“Am too!”

“Are too.” He said it with extra emphasis.

Angel made a face at her brother.

“I’m still going first.”

Mother held her daughter’s arm and found the vein she needed.

“Will you tell me about your day at school, honey?”

“Okay. Miss Holland told us a really funny story today about a panda in a zoo. ‘Cause the panda wanted …”

She was in full medical mode now. Nothing could stop her. She reached for the needle.

“… Mommy?”

“Don’t worry, honey, it won’t hurt too much. Look, your sister will show you.”

“Mommy?”

“It’s okay, honey, let me do my job.”

“Mommy?”

“Yes! What is it?”

“Why are you crying, Mommy?”

Mother put the needle down and felt her cheek. It was damp. She wiped off her hand and grabbed the needle purposefully.

“Nothing, sweetie. I just wish your father could be here. Now let me do my job.” I love you, my darlings.

From behind the children, Hangman laughed.

I hate you, she told him. I hate you.

Mother left the room alone.

***

“Hello, love!”

A ridiculous giggle came bubbling up from Mother’s insides. She shut the door on it and went to greet her husband.

“Hello.” She gave him her best smile.

He dropped his coat on his briefcase and made her smile wider.

Letting her go, he looked up the stairs. “Where are those infernal children?”

“They have swimming lessons today, honey. You know that.”

“Thank God. I don’t think I could stand them right now. I’ve seen nothing but kids and needles all day.”

“Don’t say that, sweetie.”

He grabbed her waist and drew her towards the closed door.

“But as long as they aren’t here …”

“Mmm …” She drew away quickly, her voice suddenly very even. “I made a roast, and there’s baked potatoes and beans from the garden. Could you fix the wall hanging in the living room? It’s been driving me quite mad all day. Oh, and the kids have to be picked up before we eat.”

The disappointment on his face quickly gave way to tolerant amusement.

“Yes, dear.” He headed to his workshop. “Let me just get a hammer.”

Oh, and Hangman? Don’t forget to take out the trash. The kitchen reeks of unwanted leftovers.

Riiiing.

Mother doubled over. What is that noise? Somebody stop it!

Riiiing.

Why won’t it stop?

Riiii-

There was a pause. Mother stood up, wiped her hands on her skirt, and checked on dinner.

“Honey?”

She could feel each thud of his torturously slow ascent.

“Honey? Did you know that the kids didn’t get to swimming today?”

“What?” Of course they didn’t, Hangman. Everything happened just as you planned.

“Yeah, the instructor just called, wondering if we’d forgotten to bring them.”

“Well, no … it’s right next door – they walk there themselves now. They’re old enough.”

“Well they didn’t go.”

“Well, they certainly didn’t come here.”

“Well, what now?”

Mother looked around for something to say and found it in the window. Security.

“Call the police?”

“There must be someone else we can call first.”

“Call the other parents.”

Mother went through the address book and found the little slip of paper.

“The Thompsons?” Her finger slid over the names. “Should I call the Thompsons?”

“Call everyone.”

Yes, Hangman. Let’s cover your tracks. Together. As a family.

Another of those silly giggles erupted from her belly and she threw herself into a fit of coughing.

“Are you alright, sweetie? Here, let me call.”

Sure, Hangman. You be the good, worried parent. You call. I will make dinner for our family of four and act like I don’t know what you’ve done to my babies.

She put the potatoes and the roast in the oven to keep warm and returned to her bedroom. The closed door was a comfort, but Hangman was with her always. She couldn’t look in his eyes anymore. All she saw was the needle.

Why, Hangman? Why them? Why us?

She picked up Lamb’s blankie as though she had never seen it before.

Why me?

She dried her eyes with the backs of her hands and stole out of the room, the now slightly damp rag in her hand.

Time to hide the evidence, Hangman. Into the bag it goes.

“What are you doing in the hallway, honey?”

She stood very still, staring at the door to the outside.

“Honey, I called everyone. I don’t think they’re coming home.”

He turned her away from the door and they walked past the bedroom into the kitchen.

“I’ve called the cops. Let’s try to eat something before they get here, okay?”

Yes, dear. Hangman always knows what’s best.

***

“I’m going to have to take that blanket, ma’am. It’s evidence.” The officer spoke softly, but Mother continued to bawl into the blanket.

“Here. Take it. Take my husband too, the bastard.”

“Now, ma’am, we have no proof yet, so let’s not jump to conclusions.”

“He killed my babies!” Hangman killed my babies!

The officer sighed and sealed the plastic bag.

“We’ll be doing what we can, ma’am. Your husband will be going with us. We’re going to have to keep searching the house, though – Is there a place you can stay?”

Mother mumbled something about a sister uptown, and the officer left her alone.

You always did hate my babies.

Another giggle started up from deep within her and she hid her face in her hands until she was quite sure she was alone. Then she threw her head back and laughed as loudly as she dared until the laughing frightened her so that she began to giggle nervously, staring at the closed door in front of her.

Hangman, you frighten me. Leave me be!

After all I’ve done, what do you need now?

He reached towards her, arms offering.

There was something in his hands, but she dared not look.

Hangman, Hangman, let me be.

Say the noose is not for me.

Hangman, Hangman, go away.

Tell me you aren’t here to stay.

Sway.

The swaying motion soothed Mother as she stood. She was dancing, now. Now he was twirling her, now dipping, now lifting, lifting, higher – too high. Her feet were off the ground, but the swaying didn’t end. He muffled her words with his own and she swayed into a deep rest.

My babies …

Hangman left the room alone.

In colonial Sydney there were many unpleasant jobs one could do in public service. Convict labour was used for all manner of things in the town, from making roads, to cutting stone, to hauling timber. Convicts were used to keep the peace, inflict the floggings and, if necessary end the sentence permanently. The executioner in Sydney, a job guaranteed to make you the most despised person in town, was a job for a convict.

Sydney’s most (in)famous executioner served the crown from 1828 until 1855, hanging 490 people during his career. Alexander Green was the son of a circus performer, arriving as a convict in Sydney in 1824 and gaining a pardon in 1825 when he worked as an official scourger, swinging the lash at his fellow convicts. In 1828 he took the job as public executioner for Sydney Town and NSW, a position he held until 1855.

Green worked from the old gaol in George Street, where the condemned were hung in public in front of an appreciative crowd, as well as travelling to regional areas to carry out his ghoulish work.

He was quite good, with few botched jobs. He was instantly recognisable with a garish scar down his face where he had been hit with an axe. He also drank and was abusive, two traits that had him arrested more than once.

During his working life, Green was involved in 37 multiple executions where four or more were hung at once. The most was 11 in October 1828. Another was when he travelled to Norfolk Island to hang 13 mutinous convicts in two days.

One of the convict mutineers who didn’t hang was John Knatchbull. Knatchbull had been a gentleman, born to a Knight and served as a captain in the British navy during the Napoleonic wars. Down on his luck after his discharge, Knatchbull was convicted of stealing with force and arms in 1824 and sentenced to transportation for 14 years.

He earned a ticket of leave for apprehending eight runaways, but was back in, after being caught with a forged cheque in 1831. Sentenced to hang, he was instead sent to Norfolk Island for seven years, where he was one of the ring leaders of the mutiny. As the only qualified sea captain, he was to sail the mutineers to freedom.

However, as things turned bad, Knatchbull turned to informer, saving his own neck while letting the rest drop. No doubt he watched as Green came ashore and dispatched his comrades.

Knatchbull survived Norfolk Island, returning to Sydney in 1839; finally receiving his ticket-of-leave a second time in July 1843. Not six months later he was charged with the murder of Mrs Ellen Jamieson after being found in her house with her purse and her body.

Knatchbull pleaded insane, the first time this defence had been used in the British law system. It wasn’t successful and he was once again sentenced to hang.

In February 1844, in front of a crowd of 5000 (including an estimated 2000 women and children), Knatchbull and Green met once more. This time there was no escape. Knatchbull went to the gallows outside the gaol wall at Darlinghurst so the crowd could see.

Green lasted another 11 years until, deemed insane, he was committed to Tarban Creek Asylum where he died, mad, in 1879.

It’s the simplicity in music that makes it the most effective. When you’re dealing with rock, it needs to be raw and unfiltered. It needs to have some passion and a hook. When you start to add more to the equation, it strays away from its roots and no longer can be classified as just rock and roll.

Sink to See has done this once again. Their first album had the makings of something special, but it wasn’t until their latest, 2012, that the band came together to bring something solid to the music world.

Dony West, lead guitarist, had similar feelings about the new release: “We grew in the process of this record. 2012 is about the end of the world, and we took home that feeling and put it into music. This album is more introspective. We thought about the lyrics a lot more.”

The new songs offer insight to daily life and mimic the band’s own will to get through to the masses on their own terms. Focusing on their online presence and ways to actually interact with their fans is a big part of what has garnered the growing buzz around this act.

Bassist Shawn Bathe put the online campaign into focus: “You reach listeners on a first person basis now, that’s very valuable. We exist virtually 24/7 when, in actuality, we are only interacting ‘live’ a small portion of time.”

West adds, “Online presence is the face of your band these days, you don’t have to tour Russia to reach your fans.”

Not only is this band using the Internet in more ways than conventionally thought, they are also being heard in commercials for Nissan and TV shows on networks like Bravo.
