Tudo começou quando o Mestre dos Magos foi visto escondido atrás de algumas pedras, como de costume.

For the last few weeks, Howard has been pestering me to write a guest blog entry on whatthefuckishappening.blogspot.com. I said “no way Jose” (I didn’t really say that – I’m no racist!). I knew that this blog would quickly run out of fuel. Remember – most blogs launched into the blogosphere survive less than a month, and then  they become dangerous space debris.

Since Howard was spending $$ like a diva on fancy clothes and various bling accessories, everyone knew he would soon run out of $$ and be unable to afford the very food he blogged about. Hence, no blog-fodder, no blog. You know what kind of food I’m talking about, too. “Snark food”, the food that snarks like Howard eat to keep their snarky bones strong and their snarky teeth sharp. But in the midst of his epic spending binge, Howard found the time to attract several other guest bloggers to write for him (much like feces attract flies). Needless to say, these new bloggers were blowing Howard out of the water. It was fun to see the guest bloggers’ epic and eloquent film reviews tower over Howard’s pedestrian rants about stomach aches and fashion trends. So I decided to ante up, join the fight, enter the dragon, and travel between a rock and a hard place in order to knock Howard out of the blog history books. That’s what prompted me to create this blog-worthy mini-series. After these words are uploaded into the blogosphere, all five of you reading will know that whatthefuckishappening.blogspot.com has been changed forever. One day, who knows when, this blog will stop being updated and start racing directionless through the blogosphere. It will eventually bore a hole through some unsuspecting starship, or crash down on an igloo. The Inuit couple will move their noses away from each other, breaking their lover’s embrace, and inspect the rubble. They will then read the very words you are reading now. But when that happens at least I can say it wasn’t me who let the blog fail. I will be able to say I was there at its peak. I was its peak. Once this limited run mini-series of blog entries is over with, it won’t matter what follows, because it already happened.

It is entitled “Joie de Pee”, and it is about important urinals from throughout my life.

EXPLANTION

Urinals can have a significant impact on our lives, though most people do not realize it (especially woman*). The act of using the urinal is intertwined with one of man’s most ancient behaviors – urinating. In the time before urinals (BU) man relieved himself in nature. He would pause during, say, a hunting expedition to let loose in the wilderness, wind at his back, a dirt turning to mud at his feet. Have you ever felt that chill go up your spine whilst standing over a urinal? That is a genetic memory – a thrill from a bygone age – resurfacing in a wholly modern environment. It is the level of that thrill, as well as atmosphere and anecdotes, that I will rate several urinals I have experienced over the years.

*Save for those few woman who have utilized this bad mutha.

JOIE DE PEE
PART I: HUGHES MIDDLE SCHOOL, MEN’S LOCKER ROOM

Built in the 60’s, the restroom had real tiles (no linoleum here) and the walls were covered in the 18th coat of beige led-based paint. Wind would waft through the window, mixing the two predominate odors in the room – bleach and feces – into a cocktail that smelled like a gay pornstar’s b-hole (Mom? Dad? Future employers? You reading this?). The urinals ran in a straight line against the back wall with no dividers to protect users from either splashing or gayzing, and were completely visible to outside passerby when the door was open. At this point in my life, I always chose to use a stall, so my rating is partly based on others’ use of the urinals. I wasn’t particularly ashamed of my body at the time, but the lackluster floor plan did not allow for the privacy required by intelligent and self-conscious young men in order to use these particular urinals.

I remember one day walking into this restroom and finding a fellow student misusing the urinal. He was in gym clothes just like me, only his blue shorts were around his ankles. Misusing, I say, because his trajectory was 180º off-course. His stream splashed against the floor tiles far from the American Standard porcelain urinal. I remember the boy looking me dead in the eye and ejaculating, “I’m pissin’ on the ground!” I didn’t recognize him from the Special Education clique, nor from my magnet classes, so I gathered that he was simply an underachiever who for first time in his life actually accomplished something he set out to do – piss on the ground. Maybe he was a pleasure-seeker more in tune with his genetic memory than I. Whatever his reasons were for pissing on the ground, his golden arch created a barrier between me and the stall. I was unwilling to limbo past him, so left I left him to celebrate alone and searched for another restroom.

I’d tell you about the other restroom’s urinal, but this is a review of the first restroom’s urinal. Let me just say that finding another one took a little too long, and I was late to gym class roll-call. Mr. Mowe (no relation to famed exotic dancer Ken Mowe, more closely related to R. Lee Ermey) called me out and threatened OCS – On-Campus Suspension, or the Cooler. I told him that I had an excuse for being late but needed to tell him the details in private. After he sent everyone to play hand-ball or some stupid whatever game, I explained my previous predicament, and that all was fine now as far as my bladder was concerned. But things were not fine with Mr. Mowe – he ran a tight ship and never left a man behind, so having me come late because of some joker was pissing me out of a restroom was not OK. There was simply nothing I could say to keep Mr. Mowe from unscrewing this poor fool’s head and shitting down his neck.

Mr. Mowe asked me who the boy was. I said I’d never seen him before, but that he was in another PE class, and he was a medium-height light-skinned African American. 10 minutes later I stood before a line-up of a half-dozen light-skinned African Americans in PE uniforms. Mr. Mowe asked me which one did it, and I pointed him out. “O-C-S you idiot” Mr. Mowe screamed at the boy, and then let the rest of them go. He then let me go.

That urinal taught me an important life lesson. It taught me not to be like this “idiot”. It also taught me that you get in trouble when you don’t use urinals. Even though it didn’t smell the best, it didn’t bring forth images of the Killing Fields like the restrooms at Long Beach Polytechnic High School (to be reviewed later). So, while at the time neither I nor the perpetrator seemed interested in using it, I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and judge it kindly.

I know later tonight will get busier as I actually start to cook again in my kitchen, so I wanted to post this greeting to all my friends in cyberspace now. I wish for all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving Day, and many things to be thankful for now and in the future.

I would love to meet each and every one of you — maybe someday! Enjoy those you are with, and live each Thanksgiving as if it might be the last time you were together. Actually I am going with Phil to his brother and sister-in-law’s home where the whole family will be there. It is so much fun because they have such a large family, everyone has a blast, we play cards a lot, and Paul and Jeanie have this beautiful large glass room in an octagon shape (like a conservatory) where we sit up tables and enjoy looking out on their beautiful backyard with a lot of natural wooded area in the back. It really feels like the country. They are such a gracious host and hostess as well, and I adore all of them very much. It will be lots of fun. Hopefully by this weekend I may be over this cold and through with my antibiotics and can go see my mother. I will sure miss her this Thanksgiving. But we can celebrate this weekend together, I hope. I’m just preparing a couple of things for tomorrow, but Friday I am going to make dressing, roast a turkey, Spanish rice, and a green bean casserole for Phil and I to enjoy around here the next few days. I am looking forward to it (and putting up a Christmas tree – a small one above the doggies on my credenza). I got off work early today, and we went grocery shopping. It was so strange. First time I have been in the grocery store since my accident on July 13th. Phil got a good laugh out of me saying it was exciting to me. He pushed the cart, and I wheeled me along in my wheelchair.

Have a good one, and make sure Hank gets a treat please. Wish you could be here and go with us. I would really enjoy your entertaining humor, and so would everyone else. Hugs to you and Hank.

While it’s true that Thanksgiving is about overindulging in food, it’s also about, well, being thankful.  So, here’s a list of a few things I’m thankful for, in no particular order. 

1. Hearing a sweet little voice say, “I wuv you mommy” everyday.
2. The privilege of being a mother, a sister, a daughter, a best friend.
3. Inside jokes with my sister.
4. The fact that tomorrow I’ll get the chance to spend time with my daughter, my mom and my grandma.
5. My furry buddy, Hank, who faithfully curls up next to me at night and keeps my secrets.
6. My ever-growing family, including my newest brother-in-law.
7. Soul sistas.
8. Kit Kats.
9. Holding hands with my daughter as we walk together.
10. Friends that I can count on for a last-minute lunch, a heart-to-heart talk, a knowing glance or a funny tweet.
11. The fact that I love to read…and that I know how to read.
12. Having met Sophia’s birthmother in person.
13. Health insurance.
14. Not being afraid to cry.
15. Wireless, high-speed internet.
16. That I have a lot of opportunities and potential.
17. That my daughter has a lot of opportunities and potential.
18. The fact that I laugh a lot…including at myself.
19. My home, my haven.
20. Being an aunt.
21. Vietnamese egg rolls.
22. The time I’ve had with my grandparents.
23. The fact that I’m no longer in high school.
24. The fact that people trust me.
25. Those moments when someone says, “Sophia is just like you.”

I could go on and on.  The point, I think, is that it’s too easy to get caught up in the daily grind, in the quest to keep up with the Joneses, in petty disagreements, in trivial minutiae.  Far too easy.   There’s much to be thankful for.   So very much to be thankful for.

Two of my biggest blessings:

Whatever you do tomorrow, do this:  Be thankful and rejoice in  your blessings!

A CBS dominou a noite com ‘Old Christine’ e ‘Gary Unmarried’ atingindo suas maiores audiências na temporada. A primeira fechou a noite com 7.3 milhões de telespectadores e 2.2 pontos na demo qualificada 18-49. Já ‘Gary’ fez 2.5 pontos na demo e atingiu 7 milhões de telespectadores. ‘Criminal Minds’ teve alta de 9%: 13.7 milhões e 3.7 pontos, enquanto ‘CSI: NY’ fechou a noite da emissora caindo 16% em relação ao crossover das franquias na semana passada: 13.6 milhões e 3.2 pontos.

A Fox ficou em segundo lugar com a exibição de ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ (5.7 milhões e 2.1 pontos), enquanto ‘Glee’ se manteve estável: 7.4 milhões e 3.3 pontos.

A emissora também exibiu ‘Law & Order: SVU’ (8.4 milhões e 2.6 pontos) e ‘The Jay Leno Show’ (4.8 milhões e 1.4 ponto).

A CW fechou a noite em último lugar com a exibição de ‘America’s Next Top Model’, que teve sua melhor demo na temporada (1.8 ponto) e atingiu bons 3.7 milhões de telespectadores

Este post de noticias de series está marcado principalmente por las cancelaciones. Aunque las tres estaban bastante claras, no han tardado los problemas y las decepciones. Sobre Hank no había dudas, la serie de Kelsey Grammer (Frasier), no ha gustado y ABC ha decidido cancelarla. 

ABC también ha cancelado Eastwick, la serie que era la adaptación al cine de la popular novela y posterior película conocida por nuestros lares como ”Las brujas de Eastwick” y protagonizada por Jack Nicholson, Susan Sarandon, Cher y Michelle Pfeiffer. Pues la serie cancelada estaba protagonizada por Rebecca Romijin (la saga X-Men) y Lindsay Price (Mujeres de Manhattan). Como he dicho, no ha estado exenta de polémica porque sus creadores no les ha sentado nada bien la cancelación.

Y la última cancelación es la de Dollhouse. Aunque la primera temporada no fue demasiado bien, FOX decidió darle otra oportunidad y ver si la segunda temporada conseguía que la serie aumentará en audiencia. Pero no ha sido así, la audiencia ha ido a peor. Por eso la serie de Joss Whedon (creador de Buffy) ha sido cancelada. Pero han anunciado que todos los capítulos inicialmente previstos de la segunda temporada de la serie protagonizada por Eliza Dushku serán emitidos.

Dejando las cancelaciones, ahora toca un nuevo proyecto que se está considerando. Sería una nueva serie para CW, producida por Hayden Panettiere (sí, la Claire de Héroes), y que contará la vida de unos estudiantes de medicina de la Universidad de Harvard, o sea, un Anatomía de Grey, pero para un público más joven. Ya informaré si el proyecto sigue adelante.

Después de la marcha de Jennifer Morrison (Cameron) de House, han anunciado que el actor Orlando Jones participará en la serie para interpretar al hermano de Foreman.

Por último dos participaciones más. Melissa McCarthy (o lo que es lo mismo Sookie de las Chicas Gilmore) irá a visitar a Addison y los suyos en al menos un capítulo de la serie Sin cita previa. Y otra intervención, la de Alyssa Milano (Melrose Place, Embrujadas), en la serie Castle.

I’m actually enjoying this show! I wasn’t so sure at first, but I’ve gotten used to the characters! (unlike Accidentally on Purpose which I thought was okay, but ended up deleted from my DVR)

Other cancellations: Not sure if you saw my tweet last week, but Hank on ABC has also cancelled. Could have seen that one coming.

In television news today, it looks as if ABC will be pulling the dreadfully unfunny Kelsey Grammer comedy, Hank.

Thank you ABC.  Just don’t think about touching The Middle or Modern Family.  Hank, from the beginning had the feel of a “go-no-where” schedule filler for ABC and obviously the lackluster ratings have proven that true.  Grammer was not convincing in his role and the show always seemed to struggle to hit its marks.  We here @ SP were glad to see this one go.

ABC is not alone, Fox just gave the ol’ heave ho to fan favorite, Dollhouse, while NBC has decided to pull the plug on Trauma.
