Not only do I not recommend taking photos of illegal two-up games, but also photographing family members outside of the US Embassy can result in men with guns becoming irrate.

Thai cuisine is known for its balance of five fundamental flavours in each dish or the overall meal – hot (spicy), sour, sweet, salty and bitter (optional). Although popularly considered as a single cuisine, Thai food is really better described as four regional cuisines corresponding to the four main regions of the country: Northern, North-eastern (or Isan), Central and Southern. Southern curries, for example, tend to contain coconut milk and fresh turmeric, while north-eastern dishes often include lime juice. Thai food is known for its enthusiastic use of fresh (rather than dried) herbs and spices as well as fish sauce.

Nearly 200 Vietnamese and foreign delegates attended the opening ceremony of the 6th ASEAN-China Prosecutors General Conference in Hanoi on November 24. The conference will discuss ways to strengthen the fight against trans-national organised crime.

In his speech of welcome, Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet said the globalisation process and the global economic recession have had a negative impact on all countries and territories, especially poor and underdeveloped ones. They have caused an economic slowdown, increased unemployment, widened the gap between rich and poor, eroded cultural values and traditional morality, and complicated trans-national organised crime.

“These challenges require governments to work closely together to weather the economic storm, formulate effective social welfare policies and enhance the operational efficiency of judicial agencies so as to maintain national security, socio-economic development and cultural tradition, and safeguard their citizens’ freedom and democracy,” said Mr Triet.

He said the fine relationship between ASEAN and China has given a boost to cooperation in science, education, labour, environmental protection, law and the fight against trans-national organised crime.

“Vietnam applauds the effective cooperation between judicial agencies of ASEAN and China, including the initiative to host the ASEAN-China Prosecutors General Conference,” said Mr Triet.

He noted that Vietnam has been carrying out judicial reform and has achieved significant results. Criminal and civil laws and proceedings have been developed to build a law-governed state. The organisation and operation of Vietnamese judicial agencies have been renewed, the professional skills of judicial staff have been improved and international cooperation in the field has been broadened.

The Vietnam National Assembly recently issued the Legal Aid Law and a number of other important laws relating to judicial activities, laying a firm foundation for combating crime and expanding international cooperation while respecting the principles of national independence and sovereignty and non-intervention in each other’s internal affairs.

Mr Triet proposed that countries develop reliable mechanisms for sharing information, conducting research and making long-term forecasts about trans-national organised crime in line with international law and multilateral agreements.

According to Tran Quoc Vuong, head of the Vietnam Supreme People’s Procuracy, combating trans-national crime has been an important task of the national programme on crime prevention and control. Vietnam has cooperated closely with the United Nations and other countries in this field by signing a number of agreements, including the UN Conventions on drug control, the UN Convention against Trans-national Organised Crime, and the UN Convention against Corruption.

“Vietnam attaches great importance to legal assistance activity with other countries, considering this an effective way to combat trans-national organised crime,” said Mr Vuong. “Vietnam is committed to full and timely cooperation with other countries’ procuracy agencies and hopes to receive assistance from these organisations in return.”

The conference will end on November 25.

Just a few photographs from around Hanoi over the last few days. I’m busy editing a bunch of images, shooting a few small assignments and getting a CV together for a big project proposal. Fun stuff. These are outtakes from some recent shoots. A portrait of one of my translators. My shadow looming over the Red River. Lilies and a nice calm lake somewhere in the suburbs. And a cow calmly grazing along the levee. Simple things. Nice things. File it all under why I love Hanoi.

I moved into the new flat and once I’d set up the laptop, the additional screen, the internet cable and the speakers, there were cables everywhere. I bunched them all up together and secured them with a twist of wire.

In Hanoi, the telecommunications explosion also means there are wires everywhere. There has been talk of digging up the city and putting them underground but in the meantime – there’s a quick fix.

Place your ladder directly onto wires. Climb up without a safety harness. Loop a rope over the many wires and get your mates at street level to pull down. Tie the bunched up wires together and hope that none have been damaged in the process.

Oh and do it on a weekday. On a busy street. And don’t stop the traffic.

Now that’s cable management.

The inimitable and award-winning Burn Magazine is currently featuring a selection of my Orphans of Agent Orange work on its website. It can be seen HERE. Agent Orange/dioxin poisoning is something that has been covered numerous times and by some great photographers, including Julian Abram Wainwright and Justin Mott right here in Hanoi, but in the end, after being here for a while, I decided that I wanted to explore the subject matter as well, as it is such an important aspect of Vietnam’s recent history.

I spent some time talking to the program director of the Friendship Village, where the images were taken, and sitting with the kids and hanging around for a few days before really taking my camera out. I didn’t have any kind of time line or agenda, and I think it really helped to slow down and consider what I was doing there. I don’t do that often enough.
