There are only three songs in Sherlock Holmes, none of which are on the soundtrack album, which only includes the score by Hans Zimmer. It’s actually a great score.

I kept on trying to figure out if the music in certain scenes was score or a song I just couldn’t plaTwo of the three non-score songs in the movie are actually from Isobel Griffith’s songs from the movie The Duchess. No wonder I had a hard time placing them. The only stand-out song is The Rocky Road to Dublin by The Dubliners, which plays during the fight scene.

The movie was great. Guy Ritchie is hit or miss, but with Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams to work with, it’s a hit. Gritty, funny, reasoned action (as in the brief explanation of the hit before the hit lands). Enjoy the movie, and the brief trove of tunes.

Sherlock Holmes, released on Christmas, is a new and refreshing take on the legendary super sleuth by director Guy Ritchie.  It stars Robert Downey Jr. in the titular role with Jude Law as his loyal, straight-man sidekick, Dr. Watson.

The story begins with Holmes in a footrace against time to arrive on a crime scene before any lives are taken.  He and Watson surgically dismantle the bad guys and subdue the film’s lead villain, Lord Blackwood, all before the “proper” authorities arrive.  Back at 221B Baker Street, the relationship between Holmes and Watson is examined as it is announced that Watson will be moving out of his shared home with Holmes and into a new residence with his future fiance.  Before they can settle their growing dispute over these new living arrangements and its effects on their relationship, news from the authorities reaches them that Lord Blackwood has risen from the grave.  With a new case to solve, Holmes and Watson set out on a sometimes slow moving, but overall fast-paced mission to stop the potentially undead Blackwood from achieving his evil plot.

In typical Guy Ritchie fashion, the visuals are very good, the soundtrack is excellent (another excellent score from Hans Zimmer), the tone is impeccable, and the fighting is top notch.  The directing is very tight without taking anything away from the acting prowess of Downey Jr. and Law.  The cinematography is nothing to rave about but it doesn’t take away from the movie at all.

I’m a major stickler for character development and Sherlock Holmes definitely delivers in that department.  Their are no stones left unturned in the relationship between the odd and quirky Holmes and the very meticulous Watson.  Ritchie spares no opportunity to show audiences how well Watson knows Holmes (he doesn’t miss a beat when he walks in on a seemingly suicidally hanged Holmes) and vice versa.  On top of their friendship, the extra dynamic of a fleeing Watson is added into the mix.  The strained relationship between the two partners is addressed when appropriate.  It is clear that Holmes is distraught over  the fact that his sidekick is moving out and it is clear that Watson knows that, and may even feel the same, yet they try not to show it.  Holmes even goes so far as to playfully, yet perhaps seriously, break up the relationship between Watson and his girlfriend.  The writers have done an excellent job at adding multiple layers to a relationship that as arguably as important as the plot.

For awhile, during the screening of the film, I became worried that they had incorporated something too supernatural into the plot.  It felt like they were trying to make “the one case Sherlock Holmes couldn’t solve.”  The situation is resolved quite nicely, albeit rather quickly.  Any more discussion of this part of the plot might spoil the film.

I was a bit concerned at the casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes as I did not believe his British accent was sufficient enough.  As I expected, Jude Law was tremendous, but contrary to my original predictions, Downey Jr. was an excellent Holmes.  Mark Strong played an excellent villain in Lord Blackwood and all of the supporting cast was excellent.  However, Rachel McAdams didn’t live up to expectations.  I’m a huge fan of McAdams, but she never felt right to me.  Her character, a traveling con artist with a deep romantic past linked to Holmes, seemed a bit to edgy for McAdams.  She came off as too nice and too weak in my opinion.

One aspect of the film that I both enjoyed and found to be a bit of a negative was Holmes’ deductive reasoning skills.  All of the slow motion shots from the trailers were employed as Holmes’ inner monologue, discussing to himself how to take out an enemy by the use of deductive reasoning.  This, I felt, was brilliantly done.  It’s almost beyond my explanation.  On the opposite side, the major pieces of the main crime that had played out through the course of the film were all described in short detail in an expositional monologue at the end of the film in a sort of “wait, how did he pull that off” type of situation.  Throughout the film, Ritchie makes sure to point out and highlight major components of the crime and he makes sure to highlight the fact that Holmes notices them, but it all hits you at the end like a ton of bricks.  The way these clues are highlighted through the film is quite genius, but the way it’s all presented at the end feels kind of cheap to me.

The film comes across as very Sherlock Holmesy, which is good, but the plot sort of lags at the beginning.  McAdams somewhat weak performance along with a couple expositional problems drops my score down a bit.  Sherlock Holmes gets an 8.2/10

The Dark Knight has one of the best, most intense acting performances every captured on camera in Heath Ledger’s portrayal of The Joker… and completely shows the psycho, anarchical, masochistic side that Jack Nicholson’s rendition merely would have laughed at. This movie works because of the great casting choices (Maggie Gyllenhaal is a better actress than Katie Holmes, but not as good looking), incredible film making and screenplay by Christopher Nolan, wonderful score by Hans Zimmer (when has he ever messed up a film score?) and the world of Gotham City that is so believable, unlike the Gotham City’s of Tim Burton or Joel Schumacher.

Hit it; if you haven’t seen this movie, what are you waiting for? I recommend watching Batman Begins before you do, however.

Given the current vogue for re-inventions of iconic characters (Batman, James Bond, Superman et al), you might have predicted what a 2009 Sherlock Holmes film might have been like quite safely, pitching it somewhere between Young Sherlock Holmes and Batman Begins. A brilliant, unfocused young man, possibly with one great tragic love affair yet to come, discovers near-uncanny powers of deduction during exotic travels, mentored by an equally brilliant mastermind, known only as ‘Moriarty’. As Holmes falls in with a recently discharged army veteran, soldier-cum-doctor John Watson, he realises that Moriarty is up to no good…

Thus the film that might have been expected, an origin story that clearly dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s of what the Holmes character did to become the legendary inhabitant of 221b Baker Street. It is probably to Guy Ritchie, Joel Silver and Robert Downey Jnr’s credit that the finished film bears no relation to this idea. Holmes here is in mid-career, having an amusingly camp relationship with his long-suffering sidekick Dr Watson (as played by an improbably dashing and fist-handy Jude Law) and a brilliant detective. Thus, when the satanic Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong, Hollywood’s villain du jour) apparently rises from the grave after his execution and promises an apocalyptic reckoning on London, it is down to Holmes and Watson to save the day.

Purists may carp – and they will – at the way that Conan Doyle’s complex, tormented detective has been simplified, even softened. Downey Jnr’s performance has echoes of his Tony Stark, even his superb performance as Harry Lockhart in Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, and he’s an engaging protagonist, but in Ritchie’s envisioning of the character, he’s straightforward, a tad eccentric perhaps but an efficient man of action whose deductive skills come second to his talents with the fisticuffs. Watson is more or less the same, slightly more settled in his ways (he has a fiancee, indifferently embodied by Kelly Reilly) but handy in a fight. Strong plays a suitably vile villain, although he cannot but seem like a curtain-raiser for the inevitable appearance of Moriarty in the sequel.

It’s all good straightforward knockabout fun, capably directed by Ritchie who proves an unexpectedly dab hand at some large-scale set pieces, and with some genuinely funny lines. If it’s finally somewhat ephemeral, a tad overlong and not helped by Rachel McAdams in a largely irrelevant part as Holmes’ former paramour, it’s still a rollicking two hours of old-fashioned entertainment. And Hans Zimmer’s terrific score, making good use of weird instrumentation such as the Jew’s harp and zither, is a fantastic accompaniment. It may be out at Boxing Day, but it’s far from a turkey.

I’m listening to a lot of scores right now – meaning I’m writing. They never lose their beauty, but the playlist – after three years of musing on the same list – does need to be refreshed. (That was an exaggeration.)  So I went to my tried and true composers: Hans Zimmer and Thomas Newman.

Note: I cannot for the life of me get TM’s “Home Movies” composition from Corrina, Corrina. And it’s making my homicidal.

Anyway. So, everyone knows that my obsession began with James Horner. (Everyone knows that.) When I was little, I used to watch The Land Before Time ceaselessly and couldn’t understand why that movie made me feel so strongly, unlike other kid movies. As I got a little older, scores from things like Legends of the Fall and Braveheart had the same effect. It just caught my heart in a vice grip. Finally, sometime before high school, I looked at the backs of these movies and found the commonality. (And then hounded my band director for four years until he finally ordered a James Horner piece, which I played until I passed out – which. was inevitable. 1st chair woodwind. James Horner. Right.)

So, tonight, as I was thinking of how strange it is that I don’t really listen to JHorner while I write, I decided to look some up.

They are the trio of geniuses, no one disputes this. (No one disputes this.) But this is kind of how it breaks down – and I wouldn’t even say this if I didn’t know that you all are committed and convicted admirers, as am I.

Hans Zimmer is lovely. And is also the Samuel L. Jackson of film scoring (a phrase which I hate and which, in my opinion, has this trifling connotation as though these pieces are just ditties of the pop culture machine, because ppl are idiots and don’t realize that the same thing that made ballet great is what makes films great — yeah, how do we recognize the genius of Tchaikovsky and not…right). ANYWAY. So HZ is Samuel L. And that’s cool. Sorta. He’ll score anything, which results in fun movements in unlikely films and then a smattering of unexpected beauty in films that don’t deserve it.

Thomas Newman is more discriminating, I think. I typically find him where the tone of the writing matches the deceptive simplicity of his work. Nothing could replace him in any of his films. (They are his films. He makes them.)

James Horner. I’ve restarted this sentence like seven times. How do you say. When only epic and equally heartbreaking will do. James Horner. It is also why I can’t write to his work. It takes over me, I can barely hold my neck straight. Some people call them chills, but it’s just a cooling sensation that starts somewhere in my chest, grows through my arms and up the back of my neck (this happens with the music of all three) and then with JH, it continues up through the surface of my skin. Le sigh. I can’t really explain it more clearly than that.

Check out this bad boy, which I purchased today 2nd hand on VHS for 99p ($1.62). It’s none other than Disney’s classic animated movie, The Lion King. With an awesome musical soundtrack by Sir Elton John, Tim Rice and Hans Zimmer. Ideally I’d have liked the DVD, but with copies online going for upwards of £20 ($32.80), I think it’s best I stick with the VHS for now. Thanks for reading.

Me he permitido el lujo de seleccionar los más populares y representativos compositores cinematográficos de todos los tiempos. Desde los más antiguos hasta los más actuales, todos tienen una gran importancia, pero quizá los diferentes premios obtenidos o la asimilación de las diferentes melodías en las mentes de los espectadores, marquen diferencias entre ellos. En general, todos y cada uno de los compositores han hecho posible que a través de una melodía, una película sea para siempre única y espectacular en nuestra memoria.

MIKLOS ROZSAEste húngaro nacido en 1907 hizo de su vida una melodía. El estallido de La II Guerra Mundial en Europa fue la culpable de que Rozsa se instalara en Hollywood de por vida. Sus primeras composiciones para la compañía de Alexander Korda fueron “El ladrón de Bagdad” (1940) y el “Libro de la Selva” (1942), ambas nominadas por la Academia. Tras ser expulsado de la Paramount por introducir ciertas asperezas de ritmo y armonía que causaron consternación en ciertos sectores de Hollywood, la Metro-Goldwyn Mayer se interesó en su trabajo. Para esta productora escribió grandes epopeyas históricas como “Quo Vadis” (1951), “Ivanhoe” (1952), “Julio César” (1953), “Ben-Hur” (1959), “Rey de reyes” (1961) o “El Cid” (1961). Fue nominado al Premio Óscar en 17 ocasiones, obteniéndolo en 3 ocasiones por “Recuerda” (1945), “Doble vida” (1947) y “Ben-Hur” (1959).
Tras su muerte en el año 2004 Miklos Rozsa descansa bajo las colinas de Hollywood, pero su legado musical ha ido trascendiendo más y más con el paso de los años. ENNIO MORRICONE

BERNARD HERRMANN
En 1911 nació en EE.UU un genio creativo, un musicólogo indiscutible, que a pesar de su muerte en 1975 recibió nominaciones póstumas de mano de la Academia en 1976 por “Taxi Driver” y “Obsesión”.
Tan complejo como cualquier personaje de las películas ningún compositor ha contribuido más a las películas que Bernard Herrmann, que en más de cuarenta Films ha enriquecido el trabajo de directores como Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, François Truffaut, y Martin Scorsese. Desde su primera película “All that Money Can Buy”, galardonada con un Oscar, hasta su pasado con “Taxi Driver”, Herrmann fue un maestro en la evocación de los matices psicológicos y la tensión dramática a través de la música, a menudo utilizando inaudita combinaciones de instrumentos para adaptarse a las necesidades dramáticas de una película.

ALEX NORTH

La versión de la película de Tennessee Williams “Un tranvía llamado deseo” (1951) marcó por primera vez en la historia la integración plena de una melodía de jazz en un film. Es probablemente el compositor más complejo y más original de la historia, el cual revoluciono todo el panorama musical. Tuvo la oportunidad de demostrarlo en sus películas mas destacadas como “Espartaco” (1960) o “Cleopatra” (1963), o con la creación de canciones entrañables como “Unchained melody” bastante recordada y utilizada como fue en la película “Ghost”.
A pesar de crear más de 50 películas, de las cuales 15 fueron nominadas por la Academia, Alex North nunca recibió ningún premio en activo. JERRY GOLDSMITHCuando la vida del legendario compositor de radio, televisión y cine, Jerry Goldsmith, se “apagó”, en 2004 dejó un vacío enorme en el mundo de la música de la película, pero su legado de más de 50 años de música nos ha dejado un huequito en nuestros corazones.
Gracias a las enseñanzas de Miklos Rozsa y Alfred Newman su vida ha sido un ir y venir entre la pequeña y gran pantalla. Bajo la tutela de la CBS o de la Revue Studios consiguió 4 premios Emmy con producciones musicales para la televisión cómo “Star Trek: Voyager”, “QB VIII” (1974), “Babe” (1975), “Masada” (1981).

JOHN WILLIAMS
En la ciudad de Nueva York, un 8 de febrero de 1932 nació una estrella condenada al éxito. Aunque en la actualidad es uno de los compositores cinematográficos mas prestigiosos, su carrera profesional comenzó en series televisivas como “La Isla de Gilligan” o “Perdidos en el Espacio” para la Fox. Pero el salto a la gran pantalla, tras varias nominaciones, le proporciono su primera estatuilla en 1971 en la 44ª edición de los Oscars por la adaptación original de “El violinista en el Tejado”.
No es un error decir que gran parte de su música ha traspasado la pantalla para asentarse en la cultura popular en el cine de los últimos 35 años y es que cinco premios de la Academia, 17 Grammys, tres Globos de Oro, dos Emmys y cinco Premios BAFTA de la Academia Británica de Cine y Artes de la Televisión confirman su talento. Grandioso compositor y director de orquesta, John Williams es el motivo de que muchos teman meterse en el mar tras ver “Tiburón” (mejor banda sonora original en la 48ª Edición de los premios Oscars en 1975) o de hacernos llorar amargamente viendo “La lista de Schindler” (mejor banda sonora original en la 66ª Edición de los Oscars en 1993 y un Grammy). Es el responsable de la inolvidable y casi perfecta partitura para el más famoso extraterrestre del séptimo arte “E.T” (mejor banda sonora original en la 55ª Edición de los Oscars en 1982), o sin ir más lejos de la composición más paradigmática de la profesión, alzada por el American Film Institute como la mejor en la historia del cine: “La Guerra de las Galaxias” (mejor banda sonora original en la 50ª Edición de los Oscars en 1977).
Hay que destacar que Williams ha hecho recurrente el uso del leitmotiv identificando a personajes tales como Superman, Indiana Jones o a Darth Vader con la “Marcha Imperial”. Pero también son destacables composiciones para películas como “Jurassic Park”, “Solo en casa” o “Salvar al Soldado Ryan” que siempre tendrán un hueco en nuestros corazones.

HANS ZIMMER
Hoy día es considerado uno de los compositores más sobresalientes e innovadores de Hollywood, apodado por gran parte de la crítica como “el omnipresente Zimmer” por sus numerosas apariciones, ya sea como compositor principal o como colaborador con uno de sus múltiples discípulos.
Este compositor alemán nacido en el 57, es el padre de la integración de la música electrónica con arreglos orquestales tradicionales en el género cinematográfico.
El punto de inflexión en la carrera de Zimmer llego cuando en 1988 “Rain Man” ganó el Oscar a la Mejor Película del Año y Zimmer ganó su primera nominación al Oscar como Mejor Banda Sonora Original. Pero sin duda la obra maestra del compositor fue la banda sonora de “El Rey León” en 1994, ya que ha vendido alrededor de 15 millones de copias hasta la fecha, un Oscar por Mejor Música Original, un Globo de Oro, un premio American Music Award, un Tony y dos premios Grammy. En total, el trabajo de Zimmer ha sido nominado a 7 Globos de Oro, 7 Grammys y siete premios Oscar por “Rain Man”, “Gladiator”, “El Rey León”, “As Good As It Gets”, “La mujer del Predicador”, “La Delgada Línea Roja”,” El Príncipe de Egipto” y “El Último Samurai”.
Entre otras composiciones también nos ha emocionado con “Pearl Harbor”, asustado con “The Ring”, divertido con “Piratas del Caribe y “Madagascar” o ensimismado con “Matchstick Men”, “Hannibal”, “Black Hawk Down” o “Thelma y Louise”, estas cuatro dirigidas por Ridley Scott.

JAMES HORNER
Este californiano de cincuenta y seis años es actualmente uno de los compositores más populares de la música clásica.
Su primer proyecto de gran dimensión fue la música para Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982), que daría lugar a numerosas ofertas cinematográficas y las oportunidades de trabajar con artistas de clase mundial tales como la Orquesta Sinfónica de Londres, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Oliver Stone, Y Ron Howard.
La sinfonía, es de lo que se nutre su estilo, al igual que Jerry Goldsmith y John Williams, pero también se atreve con el sintetizador, siendo un gran virtuoso en este estilo e integrándolo perfectamente en la gran orquesta.
Obviamente ha sido nominado al Óscar en el apartado a la mejor Banda Sonora en 7 ocasiones, como también lo fue en los Grammy o en los Globos de Oro, con películas como “Aliens: el regreso” (1986), “Campo de sueños” (1989), “Braveheart” (1995), “Apolo 13″ (1995), “Titanic” (1997), “Una mente maravillosa” (2001), “Casa de arena y niebla” (2003), consiguiéndolo doblemente con “Titanic” tanto en el apartado a la mejor música como a la mejor canción. “La leyenda del zorro”, “Gloria” o “El nombre de la rosa” fueron también grandes composiciones de Horner.

Local Disney and musical-theatre fans alike will be ecstatic to hear that Tony Award-winning musical Disney’s The Lion King will finally be coming to the Vancouver stage in July, 2010.

Broadway Across Canada offerings have been relatively sparse in our city over the past few years and hopefully this announcement signals the beginning of a turnaround in the national touring productions that stop in Vancouver.

Based on the blockbuster 1994 animated film of the same name, The Lion King opened on Broadway in 1997 and promptly won a plethora of honours including six Tony Awards, eight Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, the New York Drama Critics award for Best Musical, the Evening Standard Award for the Theatrical Event of the Year, two Olivier Awards, a Theatre World Award, the Astaire Award for Outstanding Choreography, two Drama League Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

Choreography is by Garth Fagan, scenic design by Richard Hudson, costume design by Julie Taymor, and lighting design by Donald Holder.  The Lion King features an adapted book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi and a score by Elton John, Tim Rice, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer.

Broadway Across Canada presents Disney’s The Lion King from July13– August 8, 2010, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, 600 block Hamilton St, Vancouver. Ticket prices range from $26.50 to $98.50 and go on sale in March of 2010.

Guerre et fermeture éclair

L’oeil rivé à l’écran, le joueur reste concentré sur sa putain de guerre et ne s’occupe définitivement plus de sa donzelle en manque de câlins. D’une beauté rarement égalée sur consoles nextgen, le jeu d’Activision poutre la cervelle, et plus particulièrement celle des joueurs dits aguerris. Immersif, intuitif, réaliste, le second opus de la série Modern Warfare transforme vos futures destinations de rêve en voyage au bout de l’enfer. Tout ce que l’on peut rêver de mieux !

Dans la piaule, les pleures de la miss sont couverts par les hauts parleurs surpuissants. Le tonnerre gronde, les balles sifflent, les ordres fusent, les morts s’accumulent, Hans se meurt…  et le plaisir du mode Solo est tel qu’on pourrait le comparer à une savoureuse branlette, avec des planisphères plein les draps : ici l’Afghanistan, là la Russie… Oh putain le Brésil, oh oui, oh oui, oh oui !

Violent à l’extrême, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 se la joue JT de 20h avec ses litres de sang dégoulinant des corps fraîchement troués, ses chapelets d’insultes, ses rebondissements à tire larigot, ses puissantes montées d’adrénaline… Jamais un Call of Duty n’aura mis autant de nerf et de barbarie dans un seul et même épisode. Exquis !

En Multijoueur, on ne parle définitivement plus de masturbation mais bel et bien de partouze jubilatoire. On s’échange des tirs, des mots, des éclats de projectiles ou de rire, des cris enragés, des jurons… La guerre bat son plein aux quatre coins du monde. Pendant ce temps-là, votre copine vous a largué, et vous laisse là comme un con, avec quelques photos souvenir punaisées au mur. Ah ouais, quand même ! Ce qu’elle pouvait ressembler à Ophélie Marie, la sexbomb de l’émission Secret Story, ma meuf !  Quelle connerie la guerre, snif !

down my brain.   Need a few deep breaths.  It is not fun resting, but I obviously need it.  I just want to be on it and going and doing, but my cough is not letting me.  It is really much better, but it is taking its time for sure……mmmmm……take note.  I hung out with amazing musicians last night who work for Hans Zimmer and Dave Stewart!  Ridiculous.  It is so humbling and crazy making all at the same time.  They are all accomplished musicians who have stayed true to their craft.  They have big, huge, fluffy, strong, and beautiful trees!!  I was hoping they would rub off on me.  But again, patience and perseverence.  So off to more writing!

Grundsätzlich neigen wir zur Nüchternheit. Dasselbe erwarten wir auch vom SF. Die allabendliche Sendung, dieser zwanghafte Versuch helvetische Steifheit als knackiges oder schwülstiges Infotainment-Paket an die schweizerischen «Hüüsholt» zu schicken, könnte von uns aus wie ein Kommandorapport aufgebaut sein (nachts, im Regen). Offenbar definiert der vormals bärtige Urs Leutert, den man auch ohne Bart dem Publikum nicht mehr vorführen darf (das SF ist offiziell keine freakshow), die Zielgruppe des immerhin einzigen Schweizer Landessenders so, dass genau diejenigen Zuschauer aussen vor bleiben müssen, die die urtümlich schweizerische Eigenart der Unaufgeregtheit auch dann noch kultivieren, wenn Rainer H.M. vor lauter Zappelphilippigkeit kaum noch stillzuhalten vermag (er versucht es natürlich, worauf sich seine Miene derart verfinstert, dass man unweigerlich an «Armaggedon» denken muss).

Ein Sieg ist ein Sieg ist ein Sieg. Punktum.

Wir leugnen nicht, dass nebst der reinen Resultateorientiertheit gerade in einer Sendung mit einem Anfang und einem Ende auch narrative Elemente einen Platz haben müssen (1977 hätte die Sendung den Charme eines DDR-Grenzpostens verströmt: Die TV-Legende Max Wolf mit einer Standardhornbrille aus dem Zeughaus verliest hinter einem spanplattenbraunen Pult die Resultate; «an der U17-WM in Nigeria schlägt die Schweiz im Halbfinal Kolumbien mit 4:0. Die Schweiz steht somit im Final. – Fechten: …») Auch wenn wir aufs hervorragendenste damit bedient wären, verstehen wir den Versuch, die Emotionalität, die einem Sportanlass per se innewohnt, darzustellen. Man mag nun kalauern, dass viele Wege nach Rom führen, und während die einen sie metaphorisch mit «Hamlet unter dem Kirschbaum» explizieren, greift das SF rein gewohnheitsmässig zur musikalischen Unterlegung. Verströmt die geflügelte Metaphorik den antiken und untrübbaren Glanz der Originalität, wirkt Letzteres oft nur noch platt (das liegt weniger am Sound/Image-Compositing als vielmehr an der Sterotypie am Leutschenbach: Bei Freestylesportarten greift das SF zur Stromgitarre, bei grossen Siegen zu Hymnischem, bei Rücktritten oder schmerzlichen Niederlagen zu irgendeinem Time-to-say-goodbye-Verschnitt).

Gestern war nun endlich wieder mal so ein Tag, und dem SF fiel nicht mehr ein, als zum Sendeschluss Aufnahmen der jubelnden Spieler der U17-Nati mit der Filmmusik aus Ridley Scotts «Gladiator» zu unterlegen.

Was geschähe mit Urs Leutert, träfe er in der Arena auf ihn?

Das alles wäre nicht mehr als gähnende Gewohnheit, hätte nicht gleichzeitig das Bakom verlautet, alle (genau: alle!) müssten TV-Gebühren zahlen, speziell diejenigen, die gar keinen TV besitzen (oder die Sendungen wie wir bei unserer Freundin Wilmaa schauen). Abgesehen davon, dass die tumben Riesen Bakom und Uvek mit ihren Hohlköpfen den Verstaatlichungsunsinn langsam aber sicher in Kölliken neben der Autobahn deponieren könnten, fragten wir uns, ob das SF eigentlich selber auch Gebühren bezahlt und Rechte einholt, bevor es den Soundtrack von «Gladiator» einfach so benutzt. Uns mit Billag-Werbung zu drohen, Gebühren für «Happy Day» und «G+G» zwangsmässig einzuziehen, ist das eine. Das andere, Urheber von verwendeter Musik auch zu entschädigen. Wir können uns, aller Einbildungskraft zum Trotz, nicht vorstellen, dass Hans Zimmer je einen roten Rappen für den gestrigen Beitrag erhält. Hans Zimmer? หลังจากสูญเสียสามีและลูกชาย Laura Bowman ได้ไปเที่ยวพม่ากับพี่สาวของเธอโดยหวังว่าอะไรต่ออะไรจะดีขึ้นตามคำแนะนำของพี่สาว ซึ่งบังเอิญเป็นช่วงเวลาเดียวกันที่เกิดเหตุประท้วงในพม่า ทหารใช้กำลังประหัตประหารประชาชน แต่เหตุการณ์เลวร้ายลงเมื่อ Laura ทำพาสปอร์ตหาย เธอจึงไม่สามารถออกนอกประเทศได้ ระหว่างอยู่ในพม่า เธอได้พบ U Aung Ko และเหล่านักศึกษาผู้เรียกร้องประชาธิปไตยและได้เห็นสิ่งเลวร้ายต่างๆที่เกิดขึ้น แล้วตอนนี้สิ่งที่เธอและเหล่านักศึกษาต้องทำเพื่อเอาชีวิตรอด คือ การหลบหนีข้ามชายแดนมายังประเทศไทยให้ได้
Beyond Rangoon เป็นภาพยนตร์ที่ได้แรงบันดาลใจจากเหตุการณ์จริง โดยได้เรื่องราวมาจากชาวต่างชาติที่อยู่ในเหตุการณ์เพราะในช่วงนั้นรัฐบาลทหารพม่าพยายามปิดข่าวเรื่องที่เกิดขึ้นต่อสื่อมวลชน แล้วผลลัพธ์ของสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นนั้นยังคงปรากฏให้เห็นได้ถึงทุกวันนี้ รวมถึงการกักบริเวณนางอองซาน ซูจีของรัฐบาลทหารพม่าที่ยังคงยืดเยื้อต่อไป
สำหรับดนตรีประกอบเรื่องนี้คืออีกหนึ่งงานเพลงยุคต้นๆของ Hans Zimmer ที่ใช้ดนตรีอิเล็กทรอนิคส์เป็นหลัก แล้วครั้งนี้ก็มีเครื่องดนตรีหลักอีกอย่างที่ถูกนำมาใช้เพื่อให้เข้ากับตัวหนัง คือ ฟลุ้ต โดยได้ Richard Harvey มาเล่นโซโล่ฟลุ้ต ซึ่งกลายมาเป็นหนึ่งในเสน่ห์อันน่าหลงไหลที่สุดของงานเพลงชิ้นนี้ ทั้งนี้ Zimmer ก็ยังไม่ลืมในส่วนของดนตรีออเคสตร้าที่มีมาให้ฟังกันเป็นระยะๆ
เพลงเปิดเรื่องและอัลบั้ม Waters of Irawaddy กับดนตรีพริ้วไหวดั่งสายน้ำ แค่ได้ฟังก็เหมือนการได้ล่องเรือชมธรรมชาติ เสริมด้วยเสียงร้องโหยหวนเหมือนร่ำไห้ที่สื่อถึงความเศร้าจากการสูญเสียของ Laura ทั้งนี้ลักษณะของเสียงร้องที่ออกไปทางพม่าก็เสริมบรรยากาศให้แก่เพลงได้อย่างดี แล้วแน่นอนว่าเพลงนี้เป็นการนำธีมหลักของอัลบั้มมาให้ฟังกันแบบคร่าวๆซึ่งน่าจะเริ่มติดหูกันตั้งแต่เพลงแรกไปบ้างแล้ว
Memories Of The Dead เสียงร่ำไห้กลับมาให้ฟังกันอีกครั้งในอารมณ์ที่หม่นและอาลัยกว่า I Dreamt I Woke Up เริ่มด้วยดนตรีเบาๆที่ค่อยเพิ่มดีกรีความเข้มข้นไปสู่ช่วงกลางเพลงด้วยเสียงร้องและฟลุ้ตที่ฟังดูทรงพลังกว่าครั้งไหนๆ เสริมด้วยที่ซินธิไซเซอร์และพวกเครื่องเคาะต่างๆที่นำมาเล่นควบคู่กันซะเมามันส์จนน่าสะพรึง
Brother Morphine เพลงที่ไม่ยาวเอาเท่าไหร่แต่โดดเด่นด้วยการหยิบนำธีมมาประยุกต์ให้ได้ดนตรีที่ฟังดูทรงพลังไม่ใช่น้อย Village Under Siege เริ่มต้นด้วยดนตรีทำนองไม่น่าไว้ใจ ที่ยิ่งฟังยิ่งน่าหวาดหวั่นขึ้นเรื่อยๆไปจนถึงช่วงท้ายเพลงที่ดนตรีออเคสตร้าและซินธิไซเซอร์โหมกระหน่ำคั่นด้วยเสียงเครื่องเคาะเป็นช่วงๆไป สื่อถึงความโกลาหลได้อย่างดีเยี่ยม
เพลงปิดอัลบั้มและเป็นเพลงที่ยาวที่สุด Beyond Rangoon บอกเล่าเรื่องราวการหนีตายข้ามชายแดนด้วยดนตรีมันส์ระทึกชวนลุ้นในครึ่งแรก แล้วในส่วนของครึ่งหลังเป็นการนำธีมหลักมาเล่นใหม่ในเวอร์ชั่นขยายและใช้ลูกเล่นหลากหลายกว่า เพลงนี้จบลงด้วยเสียงร่ำไห้สั้นๆที่ฟังแล้วอดเห็นใจกับสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นในประเทศพม่าไม่ได้ สุดท้ายนี้อาจกล่าวได้ว่านี่คือหนึ่งในเพลงปิดอัลบั้มที่ดีที่สุดก็เป็นได้
แม้ตัวหนังจะไม่เป็นที่กล่าวถึงมากนัก แต่เชื่อเถอะครับว่านี่คือหนังที่คุณควรหามาดู เช่นเดียวกับงานเพลงชิ้นนี้ของ Hans Zimmer ที่อาจถูกมองข้าม แต่นี่คืองานเพลงอันละเมียดละไมที่เรียกได้ว่าเป็นหนึ่งในผลงานขึ้นหิ้งของคอมโพเซอร์ท่านนี้เลยก็ว่าได้

In Einstimmung auf den Vader Award 2009 möchte ich ab sofort jede Woche einen Soundtrack vorstellen, der mir ganz gut gefällt. Heute präsentiere ich den Soundtrack zu Pirates of the Carribean 3 – At World’s End von Hans Zimmer, von dem ihr sicherlich nicht zum letzten Mal gehört habt, da er zu meinen Lieblingskomponisten zählt. Zimmer schrieb auch schon den Soundtrack zu Lion King, weltweite Berühmtheit erlangte er jedoch durch das Titellied zum ersten Pirates-Film, das er zusammen mit Klaus Badelt schrieb.

Der Komponist
Hans Zimmer ist ein deutscher Komponist, der in Hollywood arbeitet. Er zählt gemeinsam mit John Williams und Danny Elfman zu den bekanntesten Filmmusikkomponisten und ist aktuell der wohl meistgebuchte Filmkomponist. Zu seinen aktuell bekanntesten Soundtracks zählen die Pirates-Trilogie, der Simpsons-Film, Madagascar 1 & 2, Der Da Vinci  Code, Illuminati und die beiden aktuellen Batman-Verfilmungen. Zimmer arbeitet oft mit Komponisten der Talentschmiede Remote Control, die Zimmer gegründet hatte. Dieser entspringen einige namhafte Komponisten wie Steve Jablonsky, Klaus Badelt und Harry Gregson-Williams.

Der Soundtrack
Der dritte Film dieser Reihe ist ja bekanntlich eine Spur mystischer als die Vorgänger. So landen die Protagonisten nun am Ende der Welt, das auch sprichwörtlich dort liegt. Der Soundtrack beginnt jedoch noch ganz “un-mystisch” mit dem Stück “Hoist the Colours” das die Verbrecher vor ihrem Tod am Galgen singen. Bereits das zweite Stück “Singapore” ist jedoch sehr exotisch und mit den folgenden Stücken findet Zimmer in das mystische, exotische Flair, das Singapur und das sprichwörtliche Ende der Welt ausmachen. Er fügt auch ganz geschickt die altbekannten Themes in die Stücke ein, sodass der Wiedererkennungseffekt zwar gross ist, er gleichzeitig aber neues bieten kann. “Up is down” spielt bei der Szene, als das Schiff “gewendet wird” und entspricht dem Titel. Das Stück klingt richtig durcheinander und wenn man die Augen schliesst, sieht man die Szene vor sich, wie die Piraten mit Gewichtsverlagerung das Schiff wenden wollen. Ein Stilbruch bildet da der Titel “Parlay”, als die Piraten einen Deal aushandeln wollen und sich auf einer Sandbank treffen. Passend zur Spannung erklingt ein Wild-West-Thema im Stile von “Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod”. Gegen Ende des Soundtracks und zur finalen Schlacht hin ertönen wieder pompösere Klänge, obwohl pompös im Bezug zum vorwiegend Streicherkomponisten Zimmer falsch ist. Trotzdem setzt Zimmer gegen Schluss noch mal sein ganzes Können ein, um die Schlacht auch wirklich gerecht zum untermalen. Denn diese ist ja auch nicht ganz ohne…

Fazit
Der Soundtrack ist eigentlich gesamt keine Wucht. Er ist ein durchschnittlicher Zimmer-Soundtrack mit, wie erwähnt, vielen Streichern und dem altbekannten Klangschema. Durch Stilbrüche wie bei “Parlay” oder “Singapore” und durch das Einspielen sakral angehauchter Musik wie bei “Calypso” hat Zimmer aber Neuland betreten und sich von den zwar schönen, aber mit der Zeit langweilig werdenden für ihn typischen Klängen wegbegeben. Mit diesem gewagten Schritt hat er auch dem Soundtrack Frische und die nötige Portion Exotik verliehen um ihn über den Status eines durchschnittlichen Soundtracks hinwegzuheben.

Hace algún tiempo publiqué un par de artículos por aquí sobre lo que para mi era lo mejor de Nobuo Uematsu (I y II) en la saga Final Fantasy. Pues bien, hoy si me lo permitís me voy a desviar un poco del mundo de los videojuegos para hablaros de Hanz Zimmer, que para quien no lo conozca es uno de los referentes actuales en lo que a bandas sonoras de películas se refiere. En su largo curriculum podemos encontrarnos con que ha participado en películas tan afamadas como Gladiador, La Roca, El Rey León (por la que gano un Oscar), Pearl Harbour o Piratas del Caribe, pero desde luego lo que no nos encontramos es música para videojuegos, al menos hasta el momento. Y sí, ya estoy haciendo referencia a uno de los juegos más esperados del año, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, cuya banda sonora va a componer este genio de la música.

Como comprenderéis no puedo hacer un repaso de su música en el terreno de los videojuegos, pero bueno como el cine y los videojuegos cada vez están más cerca voy a hacer un resumen de las que son sus mejores piezas musicales (esto siempre a nivel personal, y seguro que me dejo alguna…) para así ver lo que nos podemos esperar de él en Modern Warfare 2 o, quién sabe, en otros futuros videojuegos, allá voy.

AVISO: la música clásica hay que escucharla preferiblemente a un volumen alto y en ocasiones tener un poco de paciencia, ya que cuenta con zonas muy “lentas”

El Rey León.

Quién no ha visto El Rey León, rey de nuestras infancias (al menos en mi generación y las cercanas), con esas pegadizas canciones de las que sin saberlo muchas veces nos sabemos la letra incluso 10 años después de ver la película. Pues bueno, la estupenda parte musical de estas canciones fue compuesta por Hans Zimmer y como ya os adelantaba gracias a esta banda sonora consiguió un Oscar. Os dejo con una de las canciones más “fuertes” de la BSO, “To Die For”:

Gladiador.

Al igual que decía con El Rey León, ¿quién no ha visto Gladiador? Pues también fue Hans Zimmer quien compuso la BSO, en la que además podemos encontrar la estupenda voz de Enya Lisa Gerrard (gracias a “sebe” por la corrección ). Aquí os voy a dejar “Now We Are Free”, el tema principal por decirlo de alguna manera, pero si queréis algo más épico os recomiendo “The Battle” por ejemplo, aunque cualquier pieza que escuchéis de esta BSO nos os va a defraudar:

La Roca.

De las películas que hemos visto hasta ahora es sin duda la que más se acerca a la temática Modern Warfare 2, ya que como supongo que sabréis trata sobre una amenaza de ataque químico lanzado desde la prisión de Alcatraz. Sin duda la película es genial (si no la habéis visto ya estáis tardando) contando con un reparto de lujo en el que encontramos a Ed Harris, Nicolas Cage o Sean Connery, pero en la parte musical tampoco se queda atrás ya que Hans Zimmer hizo un trabajo exquisito y es sin duda una de mis BSO favoritas. Os dejo con “Rock House Jail”:

Piratas del Caribe.

Con la ayuda en esta ocasión de su aprendiz Klaus Badelt, Hans Zimmer puso también música a las aventuras del capitán Jack Sparrow. Con un tema principal fortísimo y que estamos todos cansados de oír en esos resúmenes tan épicos que hacen los programas de fútbol, Piratas del Caribe cuenta con una de las mejores BSO de los últimos años. Os dejo con “Drink Up Me Hearties”:

Pearl Harbour.

Una película que tiene en privilegio de estar entre mis favoritas no podía faltar en esta lista, y es que el tema principal de la misma es sencillamente precioso. Sin más os dejo con “Tennessee”:

El Último Samurai.

Otra gran película que se suma a la lista, esta vez con una BSO un poco más modesta en mi opinión, pero que sin embargo tiene momentos impagables, os dejo con “Red Warrior”:

Y otra mítica de Tom Cruise que sin duda también se acerca un poco más a la temática de Modern Warfare 2. En esta ocasión os dejo con una canción un poco diferente, que este hombre se atreve con todo, hasta con algo tan nuestro como es… ¡el flamenco! “Seville”:

Não, não apetece mesmo. Mas amanhã há mais. Ou muito me engano, ou este vai ser o meu Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

A ver vamos. Para já, e a poucos dias de Hans Zimmer se estrear no mundo dos videojogos, um grande bem-haja ao senhor Jesper Kyd!

So, this is my first blog post – holy crow. I’ve never really got into it previously, thinking it was for people who wanted the world to know what they’ve done today. Quite frankly, my life isn’t that exciting day-to-day. I work in an office, tapping away at keys (much as I’m doing now), answering phone calls, tempering irate customers and generally telling people ”no” (that’s my favourite thing to do) or yes, I’ve already done it. It, of course, gets more detailed than that, but it’s not overly exciting!

This blog, I’ve decided, is for more meaningful things – at least, more meaningful to me. Things that I ponder about – human behaviour, ancient mysteries, music, and what I should have for dinner. It might not all be relevant or correct, but I’m not setting out to create a reference blog. Writing has always been my way of venting – letting my stresses and upsets out in a way that I can manage. Other people scream. Some even cut themselves. I write. My main source of writing is my text-based RPG on The Northlands, the online community that I have belonged to and called my online-home for several years now. What a great place it is!

What should I reveal as my first pondering? Since I’m listening to it, I strongly recommend everyone listens to Ludovico Einaudi. He’s an Italian pianist and composer who has, quite simply, won my heart. His music sings to me directly, resonating through me. If you haven’t already, go and listen to him. Use Amazon or Spotify or any other source you know. He’s just released a new album called Nightbook, but I also suggest you listen to his previous album, Divenire. He combines brilliant piano compositions with ethereal strings. He has become the soundtrack to my thoughts, inspiring me, completely calming me, and letting me know that moving quickly through the world means you often miss the most beautiful things. My favourite song is from Divenire, and is called Primavera. His most famous song, which I imagine almost everyone has heard at one time or another, is I Giorni (meaning The Days), or Le Onde (The Waves).

Ludovico Einaudi is my favourite classical artist. After him, Hans Zimmer. He rocks. The diversity of his ability to compose soundtracks is outstanding. From Gladiator (The Battle being an epic song) to Black Hawk Down, he is undoubtedly one of the most talented film composers of this time. Some soundtracks don’t differ by much, which can mean it is sometimes difficult to tell the difference between two film scores. But it also means he is almost instantly recognisable. The Dark Knight is a brilliant composition, which deserves every piece of audio equipment you have. Pirates of the Caribbean (the second and third) is also outstanding. I will prod you to go and listen!

Isn’t it wonderful what sick days can do for your “To-Do” list? I’ve had since Monday afternoon off this week, sick, and I’ve almost finished Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol, (which has previously taken me forever to read) and I’ve caught up on my beloved RPG, as well as starting a new one. My man doesn’t know what to do with himself – he got back yesterday lunch time to find the place a tip because I’d decided to re-arrange everything (I blame my mother for that urge – how many times have I been unable to find a  damn saucepan because it’s in a different cupboard?). Poor guy. But he’s another story. My favourite story. He thinks I’m also a geek! I take offence! Ha ha, yeah right, I will raise my hand and admit I’m a geek – but so is he, because he can read ticker tape. I felt very young when I found that out.

What shall I post on next? I’ve been pondering (that’s a good word) about motivation, and what motivates me and you. Any ideas?

Have to admit, I’ve been pretty stuck on Faith and the Muse, Bella Morte and soundtracks this month. The first two are great for driving to work. The soundtracks fit right in with my subconscious attempt to go back to being a night-dwelling being, because I always used to write at night while listening to LOTR, Pirates and X-Men.

So, today is Soundtracks of Note.

Pirates of the Caribbean: No matter what you think of the movies themselves, the music is awesome writing music. Hey, it combines two of my favorite modern composers: Badelt and Zimmer. While we may never reach the genius of classical music, there’s a lot to be offered by some of the Hollywood score writers.

Sad, but true.

Kill Bill is a collection of composers. Lonely Shepherd is stunning.

Chronicles of Narnia is a nice blend of softer music and good cinematic theme music.

The Matrix. C’mon. Again, regardless of what you thought of the movies, the music rocks. I’ve been listening to In My head for at least 5 years, and never gotten tired of it. Don Davis, Juno Reactor, James Newton Howard, Enya, Rob Dougan, there’s a great mix in here!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has one of those songs that I NEVER heard it…heard it and fell in love…and now I hear it at least once a week. This happened with Killing Moon from Donnie Darko too. But the theme for this is great. Cheerful, bouncy and quirky!

A Clockwork Orange is mostly remixed classical music. The score is every bit as wacky as the movie.

Lord of the Rings: Howard Shore. Enough said, yes? The man is a genius. I have been listening to this music since I was 14, and listened to it three days this week while writing.

Blackhawk Down is another Hans Zimmer. I put him right up there with Shore, Badelt and Howard.

Pink Panther is just insane. Great for a not-serious scene.

Southland Tales has some nice instrumental music.

The Piano: the score is absolutely beautiful and gentle.

The Watchmen: yes yes, it’s 80’s remixes. But it’s FUN 80’s remixes.

Natural-Born Killers is Nine Inch Nails, Cohen, Cowboy Junkies and others that I love. This is where I started listening to Cohen.

Anything Bollywood. Bollywood is usually a love-or-hate thing. But if you want some prime examples of good Bollywood writing music, email me. I’ll send you Kabhi, Fanaa and Dil Chahta Hai.

Donnie Darko is dark, quiet and quirky. Perfection.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or House of a Thousand Daggers.

Last of the Mohicans is one of those that I tend to forget about. But I Will Find You by Enya is a great song, and it’s surrounded by equally strong offerings.

There’s a great song, Cells, by The Servant. I can’t find the music online to listen to, so I don’t know if the rest of the band is so good, but I love love LOVE this one song. It’s a bit techno, a bit cinematic. If anyone has heard other music by the Servant, please let me know!

So there you go. Some new things to listen to, hopefully.

Por tercera vez Michael Bay viene a engrosar esta sección (tras la infumable Pearl Harbor y la estrepitosamente fallida La isla) con un nuevo despropósito orgiástico de chapa, cristal y pintura hechos añicos para disfrute del personal, puro escaparatismo pirotécnico que envuelve una historia tan gratuita como absurda a la medida del más rancio y conservador patrioterismo de una sociedad esquizofrénica como la norteamericana y con los consabidos “héroes” de cartón piedra que son tan de gusto de Bay como protagonistas absolutos de un pestiño que los seguidores del cine de acción no vacilan en calificar de “obra maestra” (no reírse, que lo dicen en serio).

Revestida, una vez más, de la épica de andar por casa que imprimen Bay y el productor Jerry Bruckheimer a todas sus historias, nos encontramos con una narración sonrojante, no sólo por la, una vez más, histriónica, histérica, autoparódica, ridícula y peripatética interpretación de Nicolas Cage, sino por las incongruencias y tonterías que el guión va soltando aquí y allá sin orden ni concierto y sin que se moleste en ocultar el plagio argumental de Harry, el ejecutor (The enforcer, 1976), película de James Fargo en la que Clint Eastwood y su compañera se enfrentan a un grupo terrorista que amenaza a la ciudad de San Francisco. Nos encontramos con un prólogo típico “de soldaditos”: el coronel Hummel (Ed Harris, probablemente el mejor actor norteamericano vivo en su personaje más incomprensible, más lamentable, más horripilante, pero Dios, ¿cómo es posible que cayera aquí?) es un veterano de los Marines, múltiples veces condecorado, Estrella de Plata, Medalla del Congreso, etiqueta de anís del Mono…, que, no obstante, se encuentra resentido con el maltrato que los politicos y burócratas infligen a los veteranos de guerra que no disfrutan de su grado militar y, sobre todo, hacia la memoria, el recuerdo y las compensaciones económicas a los familiares de quienes perdieron la vida en misiones militares, muchas de ellas ilegales, al servicio del imperialismo norteamericano derrocando gobiernos o apoyando golpes de Estado. Así que al bueno de Hummel y otros patriotas de su mismo cuerpo se les ocurre una genial idea para protestar y hacer que el Gobierno tome conciencia de tan tremenda injusticia: ¿una huelga de hambre? ¿Una manifestación? ¿La denuncia en los medios de comunicación? ¿Un calendario todos en bolas? Nooorl. Nada menos que el robo, el secuestro y el chantaje.

Así las cosas, un grupito de marines mentalizados todos, oficiales y soldados, de la necesidad de hacer justicia a sus camaradas desaparecidos, asaltan una base militar americana (vigilada por lo que parece ser un grupo de boy-scouts incompetentes y torpes, hay que ver cómo vigilan las bases en América, para echarse a temblar) y roban dieciséis (no uno ni dos) misiles cuyas cabezas están dotadas de un gas letal, venenosísimo y fosforescente que viaja en pelotas de cristal hiperfrágil. Pero ojo, como son soldaditos leales a sus camaradas, sólo hieren a los guardias, dejándoles dormidos con dardos cargados de un potente somnífero. Eso sí, la vida de los civiles se la trae floja, porque amenazan al Gobierno con disparar los misiles sobre la ciudad de San Francisco si no aceptan sus demandas una vez que se establecen en la antigua prisión de Alcatraz y secuestran al grupo de visitantes que a esa hora hace el recorrido guiado por esa antigua prisión española. Eso es el prólogo, y de él pueden sacarse dos conclusiones que rayan el absurdo: en primer lugar, el hecho de que no elminen a los guardias en el asalto pero que no les importe intoxicar y matar a toda la ciudad de San Francisco, militares incluidos, algunos de ellos los mismos a los que acaban de salvar, y en segundo, el detallito consistente en que los militares no utilizan sus uniformes reglamentarios, sino que los sustituyen por un sucedáneo de centro comercial; la importancia de esta nimiedad es extrema, dado que responde al tacto de cierto cine de Hollywood (y de ciertos Gobiernos) a la hora de hacer ficción con las sediciones, golpes de Estado ficticios y demás, sobre todo si los asesinos y terroristas visten uniforme americano. Las películas que recogen este tipo de historias han de pasar controles muy férreos de guión y producción para ser vistas con buenos ojos, y de ahí que la trama tome las derivas que toma.

El caso es que a las autoridades no se les ocurre otra cosa que asaltar la prisión para rescatar a los rehenes y eliminar la amenaza de los misiles. Para ello, escogen un grupo de comandos de lo más experto (exterminado a la primera ocasión, no es de extrañar que las cosas vayan como van en Iraq o Afganistán) y a dos asesores cuyo concurso es imprescindible para el éxito de la misión: un especialista en armamento biológico (Cage) que pueda desactivar los chismes, y el único (que insulto a la desmemoria del cinéfilo, que sabe perfectamente que han sido varios los fugados de Alcatraz, cinematográficamente hablando) fugado de la prisión que (nuevo absurdo), a pesar de haber vivido allí recluido en su celda y de haber transitado una única vez por los lugares que atravesó para salir de ella al mar, se conoce la edificación como si la hubiera diseñado él mismo. Quiere la cosa que el preso sea un antiguo agente secreto británico (Sean Connery) enemistado con el director del F.B.I. y que accede a ayudar porque su hija vive, mira tú qué casualidad, en San Francisco y es una víctima potencial de la amenaza.

Y a partir de ahí, ¿qué? Pues eso, incongruencias argumentales de primera clase, testosterona a chorros, acción, persecuciones (muy bien rodadas, eso sí), tiros, diálogos fatuos y grandilocuentes, música apabullante, militarismo de cartón, épica de baratillo, una ironía de parvulario en ciertos diálogos y mujeres reducidas al papel de florero (la novia de Cage, que se plantifica también en San Francisco, embarazada y deseando que su chico la pida en matrimonio) o de tópico (la hija desasistida de Connery, el cual espera recuperar el tiempo perdido junto a ella). Es decir, más espectacularidad vacía en la que la deriva de la trama tiene que reconduciirse hacia el patrioterismo chufletero y por lo tanto el papel de villano termina recayendo sobre dos subalternos, dos cabezas de turco indignos de llamarse Marines, rescatándose en última instancia la memoria de los héroes para el honor y la patria, haciendo inútil, absurdo, estúpido, todo lo anterior que hemos visto y convirtiendo al delincuente y asesino potencial en honorable víctima de la corrupción política. Un asco aderezado con los habituales tics de Bay, sobre todo esas escenas ridículas de ese héroe incorporándose a cámara lenta mirando hacia el horizonte mientras a sus espaldas encontramos un paisaje de desolación… Estupidez supina ante la que hay que dejarse llevar sin hacerse preguntas. Lo contrario nos expone al riesgo de un cortocircuito cerebral severo.

Acusados: todos
Agravantes: Cage, beattlemaníaco en la cinta, para más señas, está más odioso que nunca
Atenuantes: la escena de persecución está bien, entretenida y ocurrente; sólo tiene una pega: que argumentalmente es absurda
Sentencia: culpables
Condena: sin excepción, encierro en Alcatraz a pan y agua a perpetuidad, excepto Harris, con condena revisable; Cage, Bay y Bruckheimer, sin celda, encerrados directamente en las duchas con el jabón clavado al suelo
