There he met a man named Hans who taught him to LIVE LIFE. He met a girl who was one of Hans’ many girlfriends. Karl fell in love with her. Karl and Hans went to the harbor and watched boats when Karl told him, “make a wish. If the ship blows its horn, your wish will come true.” Three seconds later a ship blew its horn.  He made his wish.  Karl went back to work and was accosted by his boss, “Wake up!…What do you want?” he kept asking. “If you don’t tell me, you’ll hear from me.” Karl decided he needed to know what he wanted. When the woman he loved decided to leave Germany to live in Barcelona for a while he knew he needed to do something. So with his new sense of life he asked Hans to leave Germany and go with him to Barcelona. But things didn’t happen that way and Karl travelled by himself to find the love of his life. Well found what he wanted and he went for it. He met her in Barcelona and the movie ends. What is the message of this movie? What really is the thesis? What do I want? Soundtrack: Lovage – Book Of The Month

A while ago we were invited over to a friend’s house for anticuchos, a well-loved meat in Cochabamba. Our first reaction when we heard what anticuchos were was, well, a little uncertain.  But we have grown to love the savory meat of thinly-sliced, grilled cow heart, typically served with potatoes and a spicy peanut sauce. An odd combination, yes, but delicious!

This past week we celebrated five months in Bolivia.  The time has flown by, and we are excited to say that we feel right at home in Cochabamba.  Lindsay keeps saying, “If we could send all of our friends and family down on a plane, it would be perfect.”  And that sums up what we’re feeling.  Yes, we miss our family and our friends, but we love it here.  And thanks to the internet, we are able to keep in touch just fine.

And yesterday we celebrated Lindsay’s 24th birthday.  We went to a leadership conference (the Global Leadership Summit, produced by Willow Creek) until two, then stopped for ice cream, a tradition we started with Grover and Nelvia on our first anniversary.

We also celebrated her birthday on Thursday at our language school, since we didn’t have class on Friday.  They had a cake for her, although contrary to the Bolivian tradition, her face wasn’t smashed into it. 

Every year thousands of young men in Zambia leave their rural communities, their families, and life on the farm behind to go work in the copper mines.  They choose to work underground, doing physically demanding work in suffocating, claustrophobic environments, where there is a real risk of death.  Why would anyone choose to leave the farm and work in such a place?  Simple: the lure of a regular paycheck.

This is the story Joseph Mutale told me as we travelled together to Lusaka.  He spent 30 years in the mines before retiring to Katete, where he and his wife now manage a small farm and grow vegetables.  Still, most of his income comes from renting out his old house in the Copperbelt and from remittances from his children.  It rings true with my experience: most people I’ve talked with would prefer a steady job to fertilizer subsidies or agricultural extension support.

Life on the farm often means working tremendously hard to coax crops out of increasingly infertile soil, worrying about droughts or floods, and hoping that there will be a market for what does grow.  The seasonality of farming in Zambia leads to farmers getting relatively large influxes of cash once per year.  With a regular income there is greater predictability and forced budgeting, which allow people to make better investments for the future (think about the last time you received a large influx of cash and how much you saved versus how much you spent right away).

Paul Collier comments:

This is not how I see rural Africa: I see not a paradise but a prison. Peasant agriculture offers only a narrow range of economic activities with little scope for sustaining decent livelihoods. In other societies people have escaped poverty by moving out of agriculture. The same is true in Africa: young people want to leave the land; educated people want to work in the cities. Above all, people want jobs: peasants are unavoidably thrust into the role of risk-taking entrepreneurship, a role for which most people are unsuited.

There are many entrepreneurial small-scale farmers who are finding innovative new ways of pushing up their yields and earning higher profits; but these are the minority, just as entrepreneurs (and farmers) are the minority in developed countries.  Most would quickly leave the precarious life of a farmer.  With so much money now pouring into agricultural development, it will be important to remember how far people will go to secure a paycheck.

14959 Blankensee

Hva er greia med at jeg våkner halv 9 idag da? Det siste jeg husker er at jeg ikke orka å se ferdig filmen Thomas og Hans satte seg ned for å se klokka 4 i natt. Jeg sovna såklart ikke før filmen var ferdig uansett, for jeg bor jo faktisk i stua til Hans. Det betyr at jeg må ha sovna rundt halv 6, eller noe i den duren.

Det kan jo ikke være nok søvn for en natt, men jeg føler meg 100% våken og frisk.

Uansett er Émilie Simon en fin måte å starte dagen på, det anbefales. Jeg lurer litt på hva jeg skal finne på idag. Egentlig vil jeg ikke gjøre noe, men å ikke gjøre noe kan være slitsomt med mange mennesker rundt seg, så jeg tror kanskje jeg skal ringe Ebba og spørre om hun vil gå tur i parken med meg. Eller noen andre.

Det er litt rart, men samtidig kult å våkne klokka 4 på dagen til at Hans og Petter sitter og drikker og planlegger fest. Jeg fikk øl til frokost og har drukket og festet omtrent siden da med de, pluss Fride og venninnene hennes som også ville feste.

Akkurat nå sitter jeg i hjørnet mitt i leiligheta til Hans og gjengen og drikker kaffe mens jeg hører på Massive Attack. Stemningen rundt Mezzanine-albumet er så utrolig at jeg drømmer meg bort når jeg hører på det, uansett settingen.

“Dream on, dream on” Synger de, akkurat den setningen passer jo veldig godt her jeg sitter og drømmer og faller inn i tanker. Jeg er ikke så flink til å sette ord på disse tankene mine, men heldigvis har jeg et talent for å sette toner på disse tankene. Det som er litt morsomt med dette er at tonene jeg spiller og eller skriver ned ikke er inspirert av musikken jeg hører på, men av tankene musikken gir meg.

Det er altså ofte jeg sitter og hører på Monolithic og blir inspirert til å lage en stemningsfull fin jazz-låt med fine strykere og myk vokal. Tror kanskje det er den største, og kanskje eneste fordelen jeg har som låtskriver, nettopp det at jeg ikke blir inspirert av musikk, men det musikken gir meg, derfor lager jeg ikke musikk som ligner på noe av det jeg hører på.

Det er klart det ligner på musikk som er laget fra før, det gjør omtrent alt av alle band, men det er ikke så sikkert jeg har hørt den låta det ligner på.

Men jeg klarer ikke å lage musikk når det er folk her, det er kanskje min største svakhet, jeg må vente til jeg flytter for meg selv.

I går var jeg på gratiskonsert på Youngstorget, og litt dyrere konsert på Revolver, Cyaneed spilte begge steder og det var jo fett som vanlig. Men det som virkelig imponerte meg var disse gutta. Jeg har ikke skjekket ut myspace-musikken deres selv nå(Massive Attack nå), så jeg vet ærlig talt ikke hvordan de høres ut i studio, men den konserten de hadde på Youngstorget var intet annet enn helt fantastisk.

(Jeg skrev faktisk alt dette mens Hans, Petter og Eva satt på stua, jeg fortjener credz)

Edit: Har nå hørt litt på Mokoomba på myspace, og jeg konkluderer med at det ikke er halvparten så fett i studio som live, men fortsatt greit å høre på.

Soundtrack: Massive Attack – Teardrop

Penejenta Blå var ikke på Bare Jazz idag, det var litt trist. Men jeg møtte Cara og Anders der, og det var egentlig helt greit, for kanskje det hadde blitt kleint om Penejenta Blå hadde vært der. Det at jeg kaller henne Penejenta Blå sier vel litt om hva slags forhold jeg har til henne. Dessuten var det å henge med Cara og Anders noe som ga meg godt humør.

Vi satt kaféen i noen timer før det ble for kaldt, de dro hjem til Drammen og jeg gikk for å kjøpe brød og majones. Da jeg kom frem til leiligheten var det steng og ingen var hjemme, siden jeg bare snylter på ly for tiden har jeg ingen nøkler selv og er fullstendig avhengig av at de som bor der er i nærheten så de kan åpne opp. Jeg ringte Hans for å spørre om jeg kunne hente nøklene hans så jeg kom meg inn, men hadde et bedre forslag; Next Life-konsert på John Dee.

For de som ikke har hørt om Next Life må jeg meddele at fetere liveband finnes ikke, det er et virrvarr av elektroniske lyder og sære rytmer og har et driv i seg som ikke kan sammenlignes med noe annet enn Motorpsycho, selv om det er det siste bandet jeg vil sammenligne Next Life med.

Konserten var noe av det kuleste jeg noen gang har vært med på, NUFF SAID.

In 1982 in an effort to enhance the R65’s image the Hans Muth designed R65LS was introduced. 6,389 R65LS bikes were produced, which featured a triangular shaped pod fairing and instrument housing versus the standard naked front end of the R65. Heute war der Start der Open Beta von Atlantica Online. Natürlich war Ich mit dabei und man muss schon sagen, dass es ein riesiger Ansturm war, zumindest auf dem Server Midgard. Die Startzone war überschwemmt von Leuten und Ich war überrascht, wieviele dort mit einem blauen Namen herumgelaufen sind (!ICH AUCH!). Aber irgendwie fehlt mir das Lizenzenpaket, das man bekommt, wenn man erfolgreich Leute geworben hat.

Ab Morgen gibt es ein kostenloses Killing Floor Wochenende von Steam spendiert, das heißt, dass sich jeder Killing Floor downloaden und am Wochenende kostenlos zocken kann. Ich habe es schon preloadet und werde es mir ganz genau angucken, ob es sich lohnt, das Spiel noch zu kaufen.

Und jetzt zu einem sehr leidigen Thema, dem Fußball. Bayern hat in Bordeaux verloren, leider muss man sagen, dass das so auch in Ordnung geht. Nach der Führung durch ein Eigentor der Franzosen hat man das Spiel aus der Hand gegeben, woraus ein (mies geniales Hacken-) Tor nach einer Ecke folgte, weil man den 1. Pfosten nicht besetzt hat. Thomas Müller, der vorher schon zu unrecht die gelbe Karte bekommen hatte, gretscht von hinten in den Mann und sieht zu recht, leider erneut, gelb, also gelb-rot. Es folgt ein unglücklicher Gegentreffer und das Spiel war gedreht. Nach der Halbzeit hat es weiterhin an Einsatz gefehlt und dann fängt Butt an, Fußball zu spielen. Er läuft mit dem Ball zur Seite, verliert diesen und foult den Gegner im eigenen Strafraum.
Elfmeter… GEHALTEN, Butt hat seinen Fehler wieder gut gemacht und der Nachschuss ging glücklicherweise knapp am Tor vorbei. Später dann die rote Karte für Van Buyten, der als letzter Mann am Trikot des Gegners zupft und der Gegner dann natürlich übermäßig theatralisch Gras frisst.
Elfmeter… GEHALTEN! Wow, Butt rettet die Bayern vor einer bösen Klatsche. Am Ende hat man sich zwar nochmal richtig reingehängt und hatte auch diverse Chancen, aber es war zu spät. In zwei Wochen gilt es dann mit den üblichen Verletzten und zwei gesperrten Spielern einiges gut zu machen. Sonst sieht man sich in der Euro League wieder…

P.S.: Ich habe schon 12 Abonennten bei YouTube, Dankeschön Leute! So muss es weiter gehen!

L’addition est très lourde et pour les disciplines à faible quotient de sponsoring, ça double ou triple le budget annuel.

Para variarle un poco a las Crónicas, esta semana he decidido, después de unos cates y otros tantos empujones, hacer el segundo podcast de Las Crónicas Vicino. Este, como bien lo dice el nombre, habla sobre cine, pero que mejor aspecto del cine para un podcast, que las mismas ondas sonoras musicales que acompañan a toda película. Es por eso que el tema que uso como escusa en esta ocasión, es la música del cine, mejor conocida como banda sonora, score o sountrack. Cabe destacar que este post, está hecho una vez más en colaboración con Liana Ylonen, a quien agradezco por su (casi) infinita paciencia!

Tan ta ra ran, Tan ta ra ran... uno de los temas más conocidos del cine!

¿Qué es un soundtrack?

Para acabar de entender que es, y porqué se llama así, tenemos que irnos a un punto básico del proceso de creación de cine; al filmar una película, la cinta que captura la imagen, solo captura eso, por ende, no tiene sonido.

Generalmente el sonido se captura aparte en otro tipo de cinta y en el proceso de post-producción, estos son unidos para dar la ilusión de que el sonido proviene de la cinta que vemos (además de un intrincado proceso de re-creación del sonido de la película casi en su totalidad, de este tema, pueden saber MUCHO más en este programa de Floppy Radio!). Del mismo modo, la música, es integrada mucho después en el proceso de postproducción de la película. Teniendo su propia pista, además de la de sonido, y la de video. Por ende, siendo el “track” que contiene el “sonido”. Al ser mucho más que simple sonido, algunos prefieren nombrarlo “Score” o también conocido en lenguas de habla hispana como “Banda Sonora”.

Así es, esto es pura imagen, nada de audio.

¿A quién le interesa eso?

Sobra decir que en poco tiempo, Hollywood encontró la forma de sacar provecho a estas composiciones, creando un mercado pequeño, pero en algunas ocasiones millonario, donde se vende por separado, la pura música de la película. Razón gracias a la cual, de pronto los soundtracks de películas diversas, se han visto poblados (y en ocasiones sobre-poblados) por autores de “moda” y cantantes de “nombre” para ayudar tanto a las ventas de la película, como del disco. Ejemplo que queda claramente ilustrado cuando la mercadotecnia y las modas se juntan y crean soundtracks como el de “Titanic”, que en 1997 vendiera más de 30 millones de copias a nivel mundial gracias a una sobre-exposición mediática. Algunos de los soundtracks más cercanos en esta categoría son el de “The Bodyguard” con más de 16 millones de copias vendidas en 1992, gracias a la ahora decadente Whitney Houston (que pasa con las canciones melosas y las películas aún peores?!), seguidos de cerca por el sountrack de “Purple Rain” con ni más ni menos que Prince encabezando el disco en 1984.

3 héroes, 3 épocas, 3 películas... demasiada cursileria...

Esto hace que surja la pregunta inevitable que más de una vez me hizo comprar un “soundtrack” que no quería:

¿Cómo se si estoy comprando o consiguiendo la música de la película, o un montón de rolas insípidas que no tienen nada que ver con lo que yo escuché en el cine?

Esto puede ser engañoso y una vez más, producto de la mercadotecnia que como siempre, tiende a arruinar más de una situación cuando se mete donde no le corresponde.

Por ende, he aquí la lista oficial de tipos de soundtracks que existen y que pueden ser el próximo que compres:

1. Soundtracks Musicales

Generalmente enfocados a películas de género musical, conteniendo todas la composiciones cantadas durante la película como es el caso de “Little Shop of Horrors” ó “Grease”.

Cursi + Cine = Ventas

2. Soundtracks conocidos como “Original Score”.

Estos son los que contienen únicamente la música de “fondo” o composición original utilizada durante toda la película (y el enfoque principal de esta Crónica). Algunos ejemplos son los soundtracks de “Star Wars” ó “The Godfather”.

3. Soundtracks conocidos como “Albums” inspirados o basados en la película.

Estos son los que quieres evitar si las “modas” no son lo tuyo. Generalmente contienen música de las “estrellas pop” del momento que para aprovechar el tren, ponen su rola más “conocida” en el Álbum, para hacerse promoción y apoyar a la película dándole “renombre”, casos de esto abundan y por desgracia el primero que me viene a la mente es “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – The Album” con éxitos como los de “Linkin Park”… *suspiro*…

Medida de supervivencia

Por lo tanto, la próxima vez que compres (o bajes) un soundtrack, primero, asegúrate de SABER que tipo de soundtrack quieres, ya que muchas veces, se lanzan tanto los “Scores” como los “Álbums” de una misma película, y puedes llevarte una decepcionate sorpresa si buscabas el contrario. ¿La forma más fácil de identificarlo? – Checa el tracklist que viene en la parte trasera del disco, si en este abundan nombres “conocidos” de “estrellas”, ten por seguro que estás viendo el Álbum, en cambio, si ves títulos de situaciones sin nombres de autores conocidos, seguramente estarás viendo los nombres de las diferentes composiciones utilizadas en la película.

Uno dice ALBUM y tiene un montón de artistas "conocidos", el otro, solo dice SCORE

Aunque ese dato puede salvarte de una mala compra (o descarga), no en todos los casos existen los dos tipos de soundtrack, y de hecho, en muchas ocasiones, solo salen o los álbumes, o los scores, o ninguno de los dos, así que la próxima vez que quieras hacerte de un soundtrack, primero decide que quieres, luego asegúrate de que lo que obtengas, sea justo eso! Y para cerrar con broche de oro, te recomiendo el podcast que viene justo a continuación!
