So I managed to brew the perfect cup of Kenyan coffee and, idiotically, drank it. Now I’m awake before my night shift and kicking myself in the head for it.

Asshole dog and I went out for a stroll. Well, I was strolling and he was chasing anything that moved and upon our return I saw the news about the bomb threats in India. At the cricket.  I can’t lie, it left me feeling just a little bit sick.

While we all know that long gone are the days where cricket was considered a gentleman’s game it’s a sad state of affairs when politics and humanity start to infringe upon our sport.

Most of us watch sport to escape, relax and get away from real life while a team we either have an allegiance to or absolutely no affiliation with entertains us. This is how heroes, legends, role models are born but there is always an asshole in the equation that’ll ruin it for everyone.

Like the attack on the Sri Lankans in Pakistan, like the Hansie Cronje match-fixing scandals and like Pakistani politicians prodding the fire – just like that a silly bomb threat ruined what could have been a lovely day out for everyone.  And while writers, journalist and couch commentators will write, moan and groan about this until they are blue in the face, there is no shying away from the fact that it’s a pity the human race has gone to shit.

Nobody was hurt and we should be thankful. There probably wasn’t even a bomb – maybe just somebody protesting the absence of Shahid Afridi.

Whether you regard Formula 1 as a thrilling sporting spectacle or a high octane circus dedicating to advertising, glamour and money, it’s hard to deny the Flavio Briatore/Nelson Piquet Jr scandal is one of the most unscrupulous acts of cheating any sport has ever seen.

Briatore quit as principal of Renault F1 after the team released a statement that they would not dispute lurid allegations made by Piquet Jr that he had been ordered to crash his car on purpose at the Singapore Grand Prix, a scheme designed to help his team-mate Fernando Alonso win the race.

The audacity of Briatore’s plan and the almost casual way in which he put his driver in danger heaps disgrace on a sport riddled with controversy and allegations of corruption, more than enough to earn a place in the pantheon of outrageous acts of cheating. Here’s a countdown of 10 of the most scandalous acts of sporting chicanery.

10 – The Spanish Paralympics Basketball Team
At the 2000 Paralympics, Spain’s basketball team were ordered to hand back their gold medals after numerous members of the squad were found to have no disability. The Spanish Paralympic Committee confirmed it had ordered the medals to be returned after an inquiry found 10 of the 12 members of the team suffered no mental handicap.

9 – Rosie Ruiz
Sometimes the simplest methods of cheating can be the most effective. Rosie Ruiz’s nefarious efforts in the 1980 Boston Marathon earned her lifetime infamy. Ruiz won the race in a then-record time of 2:31:56, but it was later revealed she had simply registered for the race, jumped out of the crowd close to the finish and ran to the line to claim victory. A number of anti-cheating techniques, including video surveillance and time-monitoring chips worn by athletes, were introduced in the wake of Ruiz’s confession.

8 – Tonya Harding
It’s no easy task to make figure skating interesting to a global audience but Tonya Harding’s plot to nobble her rival Nancy Kerrigan before the 1994 Winter Olympics did just that. Harding conspired with her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly to injure Kerrigan’s knee and remove her from Olympic contention. Harding’s dastardly scheme was revealed before the Olympics and the US team attempted to bar her from the competition. She threatened legal action and was allowed to participate. Some justice was done as Kerrigan recovered from her injuries to claim a silver medal while Harding slumped to and eighth place finish.

7 – Roberto Rojas
Chilean goalie Roberto Rojas was banned from football for life and his country was kicked out of the 1990 World Cup after he tried to get a qualifier against Brazil abandoned because Chile were losing in a game they needed to win. When a firework was thrown into his penalty box he crashed to the ground, took a razor blade from his glove and slashed his head. Television evidence showed the firework landed nowhere near him and, after appeal, his ban was reduced to two years.

6 – 1919 Chicago White Sox
Modern day baseball is no stranger to accusations of cheating. However, America’s pasttime has been blighted by allegations of corruption throughout its history. One of the most infamous episodes came in 1919 when eight Chicago White Sox players conspired to throw the World Series after allegedly being bribed by gamblers. The players involved were later acquitted of criminal charges after evidence was mysteriously lost prior to the start of their trial but were banned from baseball for life.

5 – Michael Schumacher
He may have won seven Formula 1 titles but Michael Schumacher’s legacy is more heavily influenced by the methods he chose to employ when faced with championship defeat. In 1994, Schumacher derailed Damon Hill’s title hopes by driving into his rival and forcing him to retire in the season’s final race. The dastardly German tried the same trick with Jacques Villeneuve three years later but only succeeded in crippling his own car. Justice was done when Villeneuve won the championship.

4 – Ben Johnson
Athletics has been riddled with so many drug scandals in recent years that world records and medal-winning performances are now viewed with some degree of scepticism. Twenty-one years ago, when Ben Johnson was stripped of his Olympic gold medal for taking anabolic steroids, it was one of the most shocking events in sporting history. Rather than looking at Johnson as a walking cautionary tale, many sprinters followed his example and cheated their way to victory. Most were caught out by ever-improving doping tests.

3 – Boris Onischenko
Attempting to cheat in an Olympic sport is bad enough but perverting the outcome in an ancient sport rooted in chivalry is even worse. Soviet modern pentathlete Boris Onischenko left the 1976 Montreal Olympics in disgrace when it was discovered he had equipped his sword with a button that allowed him to trigger Fencing’s electronic scoring system at will. Onischenko’s technical chicanery was eventually uncovered by Britain’s Jim Fox who reported his doubts over the Soviet’s string of victories. Onischenko’s weapon was replaced, and he was eventually disqualified.

2 – Hansie Cronje
South African captain Hansie Cronje sent shockwaves through cricket when he admitted to repeatedly attempting to fix the outcome of matches at the behest of Indian bookmakers. He was exposed as a liar and a hypocrite when it was revealed he was willing to fix matches for a bribe as small as a leather jacket. That he only asked black teammates to help him carry out his plans made it even worse. A tearful confession proved Cronje was nothing more than a petty, greedy corrupt individual hiding behind a veneer of fake Christian beliefs.

1 – Panama Lewis
Shame on you if you thought I’d have Diego Maradona at number one! El Diego gets a pass from this list as he cheated in the heat of the moment. All footballers cheat at every opportunity and Maradona was no different. It was the fault of the referee and his linesmen for not spotting the ‘Hand of God’ at World Cup 1986.
The Sports Bloke cites boxing trainer Panama Lewis as the worst cheat in the history of sport. Lewis earned lifelong infamy in 1983 when his fighter Lewis Resto and faced Billy Collins Jr. Lewis removed most of the padding from Resto’s boxing gloves and soaked the tape that went on his hands in plaster of Paris. Unsurprisingly, Resto delivered a brutal ten-round beating to Collins who left the ring with blurred vision and severely damaged face. Collins slumped into depression after the fight and lost his life nine months later in a car crash that many believe to be suicide. Lewis spent a year in prison for fixing the fight and was banned from boxing for life.

Yesterday I smellled summer. It crept up on me, taking me by surprise. I had all but forgotten its seduction, like bumping into a forgotten lover who makes you giggle in that humiliating way, and smooth you hair, all the while your heart thumps like a racehorse. A definitive warm haze that tastes of overripe grapes, sugary cocktails and suntan lotion, came in through the window and at me.

For me there are only two seasons. summer, and not summer. If I can’t bear my arms in vests all day and night, it’s not summer. I can no more understand a bride who chooses an icy landscape and furry cape, than I can get into the head of Octomom. Summer is about spaces opening up and pushed up windows to let the outside in. It’s about the best fruits, long evenings of crickets peeping and weekends of waves. It’s a time when I can feel my own skin, not the skin or hair of an animal or plant. It’s when I feel the happiness of a naked newborn baby once again.

March was always so bittersweet for me growing up, as it held my Birthday, but also signalled the dipping of temperatures. I can recall moving about on the carpet of my bedroom, the pinched faces of fashion models following me from the walls above, as I chased the final rays of warmth on a day at the end of summer. I always went into denial at the end of the season, until the cold finally won, sending me home clutching blue arms and splotched legs. I hear it is still baking in Cape Town this final week in March. Can’t be “global warming” in light of the stories of record snowfalls all through Christmas in the northern hemisphere. Perhaps we need to come up with a better term like “temperature schitzophrenia”. California is favoured because it is pretty mental in that there are days in February that demand shorts and light sleeves.

I always wanted a life where  I could chase warmth around the globe.

And all this brings me to my final meandering thought which is why we humans spend so much time discussing the weather. The Brits are famous for filling empty silences with chitchat on sunshine dispensation, cloud formations and dew concentration. We make fun of the aging for their propensity to revert to light banter on the weather at a time where they have so much more to teach us. Alan’s family waits up for the late weather slot to tell them how easy tomorrow will be, but they do live in Kansas, land of extremes. As a South African growing up in a place where the seasons are as predictable as knowing the sun rises tomorrow, I cannot grasp the idea of schools closing when it gets too cold. From November to March it is hot with blue skies and warm evenings in Cape Town. The middle of the year brings rain and bone-numbing evenings.

A few decades back when professional sport was limited to the seasons and was not evergreen, there was this TV ad for cricket. It featured girls in bikinis on the sidelines, potbellied men braaing wors on the grassy slopes, Hansie putting zinc on his nose. “C’mon Summer, C’mon, Cmon!” went the song. As much as I love summer, part of me wants it to be put in a box at the end of the season, like it used to be, so I can pull it out with my light, breezy dresses, and get excited all over again.

Following on from the revelations about Jamie Burnett’s alleged match-fixing probe in snooker’s UK Championships it got me thinking about the historical precedents.

10. Manchester United and Liverpool players conspired to contrive a 2-0 victory for United. Seven players had placed bets at 7/1 on this outcome. The points Utd gained were enough to see them finish one place above the relegation zone ahead of Chelsea and Arsenal (19th and 20th respectively). However, the war intervened and both Chelsea and Arsenal were elected to a newly expanded First Division for the 1919/20 season.

5 of the 6 survivors of the Great War had their lifetime bans rescinded by the FA in lieu of their contributions to the War effort.

9. Nikolay Davydenko has a long charge sheet of controversial behaviour but has not been found guilty of any wrongdoing.

The most notorious example came in 2007, when upon taking a first set lead against Martin Vassallo Argüello, $7 million was waged with Betfair on Davydenko to lose.

He did, when he withdrew in the third set citing a foot injury.

Betfair notified the ATP tour, claiming that this level of activity was over ten times what they would expect on a match like this. An investigation voided the bets but cleared the two players involved of match fixing.

8. St Helens’ players Sean Long and Martin Gleeson used inside knowledge of their coach Ian Millwards plans to field a weakened side against Bradford in 2004 to place £1,000 bets on the Bulls to win.

The Bulls did duly win 54-8, and ironically Gleeson scored St Helen’s first try.

Both were fined around £10,000 and banned for months.

7. The Yellow Sam Betting Coup was a successful and legal horse racing scam orchestrated throughout the UK and Ireland.

The horse Yellow Sam’s owner had ran him poorly and with unfavourable conditions to generate an advantage over the handicappers.

Yellow Sam was then entered in a national hunt race at Bellewstown and was priced at 20-1.

Barney Curley, the horses owner, then rang a number of associates who turn rang associates of theirs and at the appointed hour in betting shops throughout the UK and Ireland large wagers were placed on Yellow Sam at 20-1.

Furthermore Benny O’Hanlon a counterpart of Curley’s tied up the only public telephone at the Bellewstown course by pretending to phone a dying aunt in hospital, meaning the bookmakers had no way of laying off their liabilities on the course.

The bookmakers were forced to pay out.

6. Italian Football. Not content with the Totonero scandals of 1980 and 1986, the earlier one that nearly robbed them of Paolo Rossi for their victorious 1982 World Cup campaign, we have the 2006 Match fixing scandal that relegated Juventus to Serie B, and would have relegated Milan and Fiorentina if they had not reduced their bans on appeal.

5. Boston College basketballers in the 78-79 season accepted money off organised crime syndicates to participate in a points shaving scheme.

BC players had agreed to win by a score under the spread, or in games against UCLA, lose by more than the spread; and Conneticuit, win by more than the spread.  This was so bookmakers did not get wise to the syndicates control over BC.

The scheme worked until a former BC player was caught on drug trafficking charges and used his knowledge of the point shaving scandal to implicate others and avoid jail time for his own crime.

4.Boxing at 1988 Olympics. Some upstart called Roy Jones Jr. landed 86 punches to his Korean opponents 15 demolishing him in the process in the eyes of everybody but the (well greased) judges.

3. Pete Rose, one of the most celebrated baseball players and managers of all time ensured his career would end in ignominy, following admitting to have bet on 52 games while manager of the Cinncinnati Reds.

The man who has the most hits in baseball history, won three world championships as a player, one world series MVP, was selected for 17 All-Star Game and made the only serious challenge to Joe Di Maggio’s 56 game hitting streak seems destined never to be elected to the Hall of Fame.

2. Was there ever a more unedifying sight in modern sport than Hansie Cronje confessing to match fixing in exchange for a leather jacket?

1. The Blacksocks.

The king of all scandals. in 1919 the Chicago White Sox agreed to throw the Baseball World Series.

All 8 players involved were banned for life, and the curse of the Black Sox meant that Chicago had to wait 86 years before becomming world champions again.

Gisteraand het ek die langverwagte HANSIE gaan kyk. Inspirerend, indrukwekkend, briljant vervaardig en well-acted was dit lag-lag een van die beste flieks wat ek nog vanjaar gesien het. Dalk omdat ek Suid-Afrikaans is. Dalk omdat ek sy biografie deur Garth King gelees het. Dalk omdat dit so reguit, sonder om doekies om te draai, wys hoe versoekings jou skelm aanlok, stadigies meesleur en jou op die ou end só toespin in ‘n spinneweb van leuens en geheime dat jy naderhand nie meer weet watter kant toe om te draai nie en hoe jou versoeking absoluut niks vir jou voel nie. Dit begin net met: “Maar jy doen niks verkeerd nie!” “Niemand sal seerkry nie!” “Wie gaan jy nou eintlik benadeel? Jy verskaf net inligting…” En dan, wanneer jy aan die einde van jouself gekom het, wys die fliek hoe en dat ‘n mens daaruit kan kom en wat die pad vorentoe is.

Gelukkig is dit ‘n ware verhaal oor ‘n werklike held in Suid-Afrika en die pad wat hy gestap het (en nie ‘n ou wat eers ná die fliek oor sy lewe beroemd geword het nie). Daarom is die credibility bo verdenking. ‘n Mens kan ook nie alles moontlik oor Hansie se lewe in ‘n twee-uur fliek inprop nie. Vir ‘n omvattende leeswerk, kry die boek wat, nes die fliek, deur Global Creative Studios vervaardig is en deur Hansie se familie ondersteun word, en lees dit. Jy gaan huil.

Die fliek self is in terme van produksiegehalte absoluut op internasionale standaard. Hoe hulle van daai video-footage ge-edit het, wil ek baie graag uitvind. Die krieket-tonele is almal 100% realisties en opwindend. Die klankbaan is goed en gepas en kom nie oordramaties en forserend voor nie. Die kamerawerk is deurgaans spot-on. Net een klein dingetjie: daar is ‘n bietjie te veel slow-motion toneeltjies in. Goed, ek weet dit is om effek te skep, maar daar is ook so iets soos overkill.

Frank Rautenbach se acting aan die begin van die fliek het vir my ietwat eendimensioneel oorgekom, veral met Hansie se getuienis in die Rhema-kerk, maar soos wat die fliek ontwikkel het, kon ‘n mens sien hoe Frank werklik homself in Hansie ingrawe en as’t ware deel word van hom. Dit was by die toneel waar hy in ‘n hotel se sitkamer met Ali Bacher praat en vir hom sê dat hy krieket wil los, dat ek gewonder het waar Hansie ophou en Frank begin en andersom – hence die post se titel! Want iewers agter die uitbeelding op die skerm is daar die regte mens met sy emosies en belewenisse wat deur al hierdie storms moes gaan. Ek verwys weer na die boek. Gaan lees dit!

Teen die einde van die King-kommissie en daarna was Frank se uitbeelding genuine goed. Dalk het hy dit aspris só gedoen om die ontwikkeling by Hansie aan te dui. As dit die geval was, wel, excellent. As dit nie die geval was nie…kom ons hoop maar eerder dit was die geval. Sarah Thompson wat vir Bertha speel, doen deurgaans goeie werk, veral wanneer Hansie op die ou einde álles aan haar bekendmaak en later by die begrafnis. Net ietsie wat funny, maar darem nie steurend was nie, was wanneer Hansie en Bertha alleen in tonele was. Ons almal in Suid-Afrika weet tog hulle was albei Afrikaans, so wanneer hulle dan Engels met mekaar praat, was dit ‘n bietjie weird (Sarah se aksent het natuurlik nie hiervoor gehelp nie!). Maar, soos ek gesê het, dit pla nie juis nie. Sommer net ‘n kantaantekening. Ek het vir Eric Nobbs as Ewie Cronjé geniet en sou graag meer van Sybill Coetzee as Hansie se ma wou sien, maar helaas is dit ‘n fliek en nie ‘n mini-reeks nie, so sy het beperkte tyd gehad.

Oor die algemeen is ek werklik beïndruk met HANSIE. Die akteurs, vervaardigers, almal – dit is ‘n goeie stuk werk waarop Suid-Afrikaners met reg baie trots kan wees. Ek het so kwaad geraak vir die manier hoe die media hom afgemaak het as hierdie sleg hond, nadat hulle aanvanklik byna die grond waarop hy geloop het, aanbid het. En hartseer. Die tonele by Grey Kollege laat die hoendervleis soos pitswere op jou arms uitslaan so mooi en hartseer is dit. Ook later wanneer Peter Pollock Die verhaal van die verlore seun vertel en dit ‘n metafoor vir Hansie (en so baie van ons) se lewe word.

‘n Mens wonder of die vervaardigers van die begin af die internasionale mark in gedagte gehad het. Ek sou met groot trots hierdie fliek aan die res van die wêreld vertoon (behalwe dalk in Indië!). Dit bring sy boodskap van versoekings en vergifnis oor sonder om pragmaties te wees of so in-your-face evangeliserend soos Faith Like Potatoes. Hier kan jy self jou mind opmaak en ek dink baie meer mense gaan hulleself, of ten minste ‘n deel van hulleself, in Hansie se storie herken as in Angus Buchan s’n.

Dis ‘n goeie fliek. Ek hoop dit maak baie geld en ek hoop dit is Suid-Afrika se inskrywing vir buitelandse rolprent vir die Oscars. Ek hoop dit maak genoeg geld sodat Global Creative Studios nog sulke flieks kan maak en dat dit beleggers se beursies sal oopmaak sodat ek ook eendag in hierdie genre kan volg. Ek hoop veral dat hierdie huldeblyk vir die Cronjé-familie vertroostend sal wees. Ek wil hulle ook bedank vir die pragtige foto’s en footage aan die einde van die fliek – dit het amper soos skending van ander mense se privaatheid gevoel, maar ek wil dankie sê dat hulle bereid was om dit te deel.

Laastens hoop ek dat hierdie fliek vir baie mense sal kan wys dat versoekings jou soos ‘n maalkolk kan meesleur, maar dat die waarheid jou vrymaak en dat daar vergifnis en ‘n pad vorentoe is.

U all might have known about the great cricketer “Hansie Cronje” and how his life ended in a flight accident. Now his brother has directed a movie called “Hansie” and this movie is all about Hansie Cronje’s life. This movie is planned to be released by this September.

The former South African national cricket captain (and brilliant batsman), Hansie Cronje [he (died in a plane crash], who took bribes to fix international matches (and blamed Satan), and whose teammates from that time, still revere him, is now the subject of a campaign by his brother to rescue his “legacy.” A new film, “Hansie,” by Cronje’s brother, Frans, is being released next month, according to Cricinfo.com.

I absolutely love cricket and was deeply interested to watch a new season on BBC4 entitled Not Cricket. The first episode was about the Hansie Cronje match-fixing affair, which you can watch here for free on BBC iPlayer (but hurry, it will go offline in a few days!).

Background: Hansie Cronje – “icon” of white South African cricket. White people in SA thought he was the dog’s bollocks basically. His fall from grace came when he admitted to taking money to take part in match-fixing. And the house of cards all came tumbling down after this.

The position of race in the Cronje era: According to the documentary, post 1994, South Africa was now integrated back into the international cricket world after the 20 year boycott. People thought it was necessary to have several black players in the South African team. Then in some footage in the doc, Cronje was seen as saying he thought selection should be “fair” and not based on people just being there. Um, was apartheid FAIR ? Is this man on drugs ? He was basically saying there should not be a quota of black people in the South African side. As a result of this bollocks, 2 black/”cape coloured”* players have consistently been in the South African side on and off: Makhaya Ntini(right) and Herschelle Gibbs, of Cape Coloured origin(left), both of whom have had very controversial careers anyway.

Gibbs (left) was implicated in the Cronje affair apparently because “Cronje had offered him $15,000 to score less than 20 runs in the 5th ODI at Nagpur”. The documentary alleges that Cronje basically took the piss by trying to recruit Gibbs as he was a young, black/”coloured” player making inroads in the SA squad and Gibbs looked up to Cronje, so Cronje took advantage of this young ethnic boy basically and shat all over him. To date, Gibbs career has survived but…just. He was banned from international cricket for 6 months. Henry Williams, the other black player who Cronje offered money to, according to the docu, basically did not play Test Cricket again.

Implications: The docu was focused on cricket more than race but I think that the implication of the Cronje match fixing scandal is evident. Match-fixing is NOT a joke. It is very serious. But what I think is equally serious is how the SA press and the Afrikaners lauded Cronje as this magnificent image of the New South Africa where he basically took the piss out of the black players by involving them in the scandal and by not advocating a positive discrimination policy. Considering SA’s fucking awful apartheid history, positive discrimination should have been put forward. Without a shadow of a doubt.

I concur wholly with Peter Oborne, who according to the Indy said:

Yule and the writer-narrator, Peter Oborne, believe that Cronje’s behaviour was the more insidious because he involved the non-white players whose places in the team were less secure. “There is a marked pattern. The corruption became greater, if it did not begin, after non-white players became a more regular part of the team,” said Yule. (source)

Cronje took the fucking piss basically. He knew that because he was white, his place was secure. Gibbs and Williams are not white, therefore they were taken advantage of. People have to be on K if they think that racism would just evaporate after Mandela took power in 1994.

The Image: According to the Indy, Cronje was under the pressure to ensure that black players were mixed in the team. Yet:

Yule said: “In 1999, almost eight years after South Africa had begun playing international cricket again, they could still face West Indies in a Test match with a team consisting entirely of white players.

I just find this ludicrous. 1999!!!! As recent as that. And playing the West Indies out of all nations, a conglomerate of islands that actually has black and Indian people like Sarwan, Lara etc. It is almost unbelievable.

I urge anyone with a net connection and an hour to spare to watch this documentary. It highlights a great deal of the Afrikaner cricket mindset.

Epilogue: Cronje died in a plane crash in 2002. He was banned from cricket for life after the match fixing scandal.

When British journalist Peter Oborne’s Basil d’Oliveria: Cricket and Controversy (published by Little Brown), first came out four years ago, I found it a gripping read. The book is an account of the life of one of the most outstanding test cricketers off the twentieth century. So I feel kind of bummed that I can’t see BBC4’s new documentary on him showing tonight. If you don’t know his story, D’Oliveira was born as a coloured in Cape Town, and was forced to leave apartheid South Africa to continue his career playing English County Cricket. He settled in the UK and was later picked for the English national team. In 1968, in top form, during the final test in a series against Australia, he scored 158, but was then excluded from the England team to tour South Africa because of his race (the South African government and cricket authorities would not allow it). The result was a political scandal that not only further exposed the true nature of Apartheid, but also the complicity between England’s cricket establishment and South Africa’s apartheid regime. I just got word of tonight’s BBC4 screening, Not Cricket: The Basil D’Oliveira Conspiracy. Hopefully I can get a copy sometime. For now, I will console myself with the film’s website here that contains a pictorial tribute, an interview with the director and some background articles. [BTW, another South African cricketer with a dubious record, the postapartheid captain Hansie Cronje, who took bribes to fix international matches, died in a plane crash and is now the subject of a campaign by his brother to rescue his "legacy," is the subject of another documentary in the series, The Bookmaker and the Captain.]

Do religion and sport mix? Some sports people evidently think so. Players who believe in God often show it openly — some saying a prayer on the field after scoring or missing a goal, others showing off T-shirts underneath their kit bearing religious messages.

Some believe that God, or spiritual forces, take sides in sporting contests. Former South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje used to hold prayer sessions for divine assistance with players before games. Evangelical Christian Jonty Rhodes once told Andrew Hudson, who was going through a lean spell with the bat: “Do your best and God will do the rest.”

Last year, AC Milan player Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite (26), commonly known as Kaka, fell on his knees in prayer while revealing the slogan “I belong to Jesus” on his shirting after helping his team beat Liverpool in the Champions League. According to media reports, Kaka is a devout evangelical Christian who “got religion” at the age of 12. He suffered a career-threatening spine fracture, but remarkably made a full recovery. Moroka Swallows goalkeeper Greg Etafia, a Roman Catholic falls to his knees every time he takes to the field of play. He told the Mail & Guardian: “I was brought up in a Christian family and I believe in prayer. God has given me talent and I have to use my talent accordingly.”

Another Absa Premiership player, Mkhanyiseli Siwahla (20) of Ajax Cape Town, who made his Premier Soccer League (PSL) debut at the age of 16, attributes his success to prayer. He is also superstitious; if he scores a goal wearing a certain pair of boots, he wears the same boots in the next game.

From heros to zeros in just three days of Test Cricket. The Indians never stood the test of character. Before we go into this, congrats to the South Africans for the way they outplayed us in every department. We were left with no margin for a comeback right from the first session. Greame Smith had told that they would go in with fresher plans for the game and it did the trick for them.

Day 1 saw the Indian Batsmen faling like the nine pins. Some of those were a beauty but mostly it was due to the shots that they played on these tracks. The South Africans had all the time in the world to score big and thats what they did. They shouwed how to apply oneself and play on such tracks. Jacques Kallis and Ab DeVillers were outstanding.

Even in the second outing, the Indians couldn’t do much with three days of possible play. The Indians tried their best to postpone the defeat rather than to play themselves into the game. They were left gasping for air and were thoroughly outplayed. This has already left a couple of questions to the selectors asking for whether this was the best team that they could get in. Well, wasn’t this the same team that did well downunder and the first test here?

Anyways thats a different question. Here are some of the other information about this Test match which the Indians should think about :

• Giving the South Africans enough time to have a look of our bowlers
• Giving away the momentum
• Giving South Africans the much needed confidence
• It is learnt that Anil Kumble didn’t like the green top and yet decided to bat first. He did the same at Perth. But there, they were mentally prepared to take on green tops. Here they were expecting turning tracks and Batsmen friendly tracks that caused their downfall.
• The Indian attack had no teeth or bite in them.

• Saurav Ganguly made his highest score against the South Africans when he scored 87 surpassing his 73 at Johannesburg.

Clearly Indians had nothing going their way.

இந்த விவகாரம் தொடர்பாக விசாரணை நடத்துவதற்காக சர்வதேச கிரிக்கெட் கவுன்சில் (ஐ.சி.சி.) ஊழல் தடுப்பு பிரிவு வருகிற 12-ந் தேதி நாக்பூர் வருகிறது. சாமுவேல்ஸ் தங்கி இருந்த ஓட்டலில் உள்ள ஊழியர்களிடம் விசாரணை செய்வார்கள்.

சாமுவேல்ஸ் பெட்டிங்கில் ஈடுபட்டாரா அல்லது மேட்ச் பிக்சிங்கில் (வெற்றி- தோல்வி நிர்ணயம்) ஈடுபட்டாரா என்பது தெரியவில்லை. இதுவரை அவருக்கு சாதகமாக இருந்த வெஸ்ட்இண்டீஸ் கிரிக்கெட் வாரியம் தற்போது விசாரணை நடத்தப்போவதாக அறிவித்துள்ளது.

இந்தியா- வெஸ்ட் இண்டீஸ் இடையே முதல் ஒரு நாள் போட்டியின் போது கிரிக்கெட் சூதாட்டம் நடந்திருக்கலாம் என்று கருதப்படுகிறது. போட்டி நடப்பதற்கு முன்பு வெஸ்ட் இண்டீஸ் வீரர் சாமுவேல்ஸ்சும், கிரிக்கெட் சூதாட்ட புரோக்கர் முகேஷ் கோச்சார் ஆகியோரும் டெலிபோனில் ரகசியமாக பேசி உள்ளனர். எனவே சூதாட்டம் நடந்திருக்கலாம் என கருதி விசாரணை நடந்து வருகிறது.

வெஸ்ட் இண்டீஸ் வீரர் சாÖமுவேல்ஸ்சுக்கும், முகேஷ் கோச்சாருக்கும் தொடர்பு இருந்த விவரத்தையும் அப்போதே ஷோபன் மேத்தா மும்பை போலீசில் கூறி இருந்தார்.

தாவூத் இப்ராகிம்- ஷோபன் மேத்தா இருவரும் முன்பு சூதாட்ட தொழிலில் எதிரெதிர் திசையில் இருந்தனர். 1999 சார்ஜா கோப்பை போட்டி நடந்தபோது ஷோபன் மேத்தா சூழ்ச்சியால் தாவூத் இப்ராகிம் ரூ.17 கோடியை சூதாட்டத்தில் இழந்தான்.

எனவே தாவூத் இப்ராகிம் ஷோபன் மேத்தா இந்தியாவில் உள்ள சூதாட்ட புரோக்கர்கள் அனைவரையும் தனது கட்டுப்பாட்டில் கொண்டு வந்தான். இவர்களை அனைவரையும் நிர்வாகிப்பதற்காக ஷரத் ஷெட்டி என்பவனை நியமித்தான்.

முகேஷ் கோச்சாரும் தாவூத்தின் கீழ் இயங்கும் புரோக்கர்களில் ஒருவர் ஆனார். கிரிக்கெட் சூதாட்டத்தின் போது ஒவ்வொரு `பெட்’டுக்கும் தகுந்த மாதிரி புள்ளிகளை நிர்ணயம் செய்வது உண்டு. அதை தாவூத் இப்ராகிம்தான் வெளிநாட்டில் இருந்து நிர்ணயம் செய்வான். அதன் பின்னர் இணைய தளம் மூலம் சூதாட்ட பரிமாற்றங்கள் நடைபெறும்.
