San Jose Sharks head coach Todd McLellan gave him a chance and boy has the kid run with it. The Dorval, QC. native has a share of the lead in rookie assists with 12 and has 13 points in just 25 games this season. (NHL)

There’s something about a headline that has ‘feel shame’ in it while referring to penalties and the focus of the article is Jared Cowen, of, you guessed it, the Chiefs. Okay, it’s Spokane, but still. (Slam! Sports)

For those that still believe in the power of the mullet, former NHL head coach and TSN analyst Barry Melrose believes the newly departed Nikita Filatov came to the NHL too early. Hard to argue when he has three goals and five points in two games with CSKA Moscow of the KHL. (Russian Hockey Fans)

Not everyone can make an immediate jump to the NHL. For those that can’t, they’re tearing it up in their first year in the American Hockey League. Among them are the likes of Buffalo Sabres prospect Tyler Ennis, Toronto Maple Leafs property and son of a former Charlestown Chief Christian Hanson and a pair of Russians in Sergei Shirokov and Andrei Loktionov. Shout outs to Dustin Tokarski, Zach Boychuk and Logan Couture, all Team Canada WJC alum, as well as Mikael Backlund, who gave Canada fits in last year’s final. (AHL)

Hartford Wolf Pack goaltender Chad ‘Don’t Call Me Ochocinco’ Johnson is expanding his horizons, which originally included Alaska and the mountainous Saskatoon. Good for him. Good for him. (NHL)

There was once a band called Hanson. You may remember it. Actually, they’re still around, but instead of long-haired, pre-pubescent boys, they’re now far less famous young men. Still one of my all-time favorite musical groups. Hey, I’ve shared a lot of embarrassing stuff in this public forum. But anyone who knows me already knows this most embarrassing of facts, so no real revelations here. Just a deep, deep love for the brothers Hanson and a slightly shame-faced Liz.

At the height of their fame, Hanson went on SNL as a musical guest. The folks at SNL were kind enough to include the three fellas in a sketch, which mercilessly ridiculed their most popular tune, “MmmBop.” It took place in an elevator, which if memory serves, was stuck between floors. The brothers Hanson, among a few other people, were stuck on an elevator which was, conveniently, playing “Mmmbop” on an endless loop. The scene jumped in time… forward an hour, everyone was still humming along, happy-go-lucky. Three hours later, the other passengers on the stuck elevator were conversing amongst themselves, attempting to ignore the music. Isaac Hanson was starting to break. An hour later, Taylor Hanson started pulling his beautiful hair out. Zach started acting like a freakin’ crazy person another couple of hours after that.

The point I’m trying to make here is that even the catchiest songs can be unbelievably irritating upon continuous repetition. Honestly, I’ve never tested my threshold for tolerating popular music on repeat more than one or two times over. Recently, I’ve started enjoying the musical stylings of one Miss Miley Cyrus. Please, friends, forgive my sucky taste in music. I know, I know. I should be doing one of two things: 1) listening to what I enjoy and pretending I’ve never heard any of it when questioned about my favorite artists or 2) owning my taste in pop music and acknowledging it proudly. I have no desire to be dishonest about my taste, but I also can’t help but to feel a deep sense of shame for appreciating popular music. It’s weird. But whatever. For right now, I’m owning my enjoyment of Miley. “Party in the USA” makes me dance. It’s just a fun song. I won’t even comment on how much fun I have when I hear “See You Again.” Awe. Some.

Now, if you’re cool, you undoubtedly have no idea what I’m talking about. Which is fine. I think you’ll still appreciate the story that the three previous paragraphs were building up to.

I was in Atlanta for my job. I’m not certain what the radio stations in the area are all about, but with a basically busted CD player and a puny little iPod Shuffle, I was stuck with that. I scanned a few times and landed on 94.1, who was playing “Party” to my extreme delight. I was on my way to an appointment and that’s a fabulous song to get pumped up with.

Well, I soon found out that Miley is headed to Atlanta for a concert sometime in the next month, and by way of advertisement/a ticket giveaway contest, the station was playing “Party” regularly every half hour. “Sweet!” I thought. “This is going to keep me inspired to keep rockin’ the appointments all day long!”

Um. Not so sweet, by the end of day two. I won’t say that I can’t stand “Party in the USA” because let’s be honest, I’ll get over it soon enough and be back to full enjoyment of the song, but there came a point where I actually changed the station during the song’s intro. It was Miley Overload. I was shocked by the vehemence of my reaction, considering how much I generally enjoy the singing and dancing along. But I just spend way too much time in my car to deal with overloading on any one song. Variety, please! Everything in Moderation! Even Miley

Amy was the daughter of Miles Leroy Hineman and Elizabeth Ann Rowan.

She was born 30 Jun 1896, in Tomah, Wisconsin. She married Earl Benjamin Scott and moved to Eau Claire Co., Wisconsin. Earl was born 16 May 1891 and lived in Augusta.

-From the Tomah Journal, 02 Oct 1914

A quiet wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Hineman of the town of Tomah on Thursday, Sept. 24th, when their youngest daughter Amy was united in marriage to Mr. Earl Scott of Augusta. The ceremony was performed at noon by Rev. Jonathan G. Smith of the Congregational church. Only the immediate relatives of the contracting parties were present. A wedding dinner was served and the newly wedded couple took the afternoon train for La Crosse. They intended to go from there to Milwaukee but were called back next day by the death of a nephew of the bride. They left Tuesday for Augusta where they will make their home, Mr. Scott being engaged in the moving picture business there. We join with the bride’s many friends in wishing them happiness and prosperity.

NOTE: The nephew mentioned was Virgil Frederick Hineman, son of Ralph W. Hineman, Amy’s brother. He died from TB, as did the wife (Bessie Martin, died Aug 1914) of Amy’s oldest brother, Gardie.

AUGUSTA : Robert Scott, 86, of E19110 County Road N, Augusta, passed away at his home Wednesday morning, May 30, 2007.

Robert Miles Scott, son of Earl and Amy (Hineman) Scott, was born January 16, 1921, in Scott?s Valley, rural Augusta. At the age of 2, he moved into the city of Augusta, where he attended grade school and graduated from Augusta High School. He was united in marriage to Loradean “Eny” Harke on February 7, 1940, in Cresco, Iowa. The couple lived all their married life in Augusta. During WW II, Bob served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre, stationed mainly in China. Bob had been employed in Eau Claire by Dolly Madison Dairies and Gillette Tire Company before taking a job with Northern States Power Company in 1950. During his 32 years of employment with NSP, he worked as a ground man, lineman and eventually as the district manager in the Augusta office. Since February of 2006, he had enjoyed making his home with his son and daughter-in-law in Ludington Township, rural Augusta.

Bob took pride in his community, and throughout his life volunteered his time for the betterment of Augusta. For many years he had been a member of the Augusta-Bridge Creek Fire Dept., where he had served as secretary-treasurer. In the 1960s, during the construction years of the elementary school, he had served on the Augusta School Board. He also served on the Augusta Nursing Home Building Committee and eventually on the Nursing Home Board. Since 1950, he was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Augusta, where he served in various capacities. He served on the Augusta Cemetery Board, and was an active member and officer with the Augusta Lions Club, American Legion, and past commander of the Augusta VFW Post. He was a member of the Eau Claire County Conservation League, and during this time was instrumental in establishing the Eau Claire County Public Hunting Grounds and Coon Fork Lake. While working for NSP, he became a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, and in 1970 was awarded the Citizen of the Year for NSP.

Bob enjoyed the time he spent coaching girls softball teams and being involved with his children and grandchildren?s activities. He was an avid deer hunter, and looked forward to the annual family hunts. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, pool and bowling.

He is survived by his son, William and Kathryn Scott; daughter-in-law, Lynda Scott; brother, Allen and Elaine Scott; and sister, Rose and Don Grams, all of Augusta; four grandchildren, Jon Scott, Michelle (Don) Wade, all of Kenosha, David (Lisa) Scott of Omro and Richard (Kristine) Scott of Sherwood; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eny, on October 26, 1990; son, Larry Scott, on December 9, 2003; and siblings, Elizabeth Campbell, June Cain, Kathryn Hanson, Richard Scott and infant brother, John Scott.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2007, at Grace Lutheran Church in Augusta. Burial, with military rites conducted by the Augusta VFW and American Legion, will be held in the East Lawn Cemetery, Augusta.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the Augusta VFW Post, Augusta Lions Club or Augusta Cemetery Association.

-From the Leader Telegram, 01 Jun 2007 Eau Claire, WI

*****

I would love to hear from any descendants of Earl Scott and Amy Hineman, and am hoping they might be able to provide more information and/or pictures, especially of the Hineman family. Amy’s brother Gardie, was my great-grandfather, and I don’t have any pictures of him or his first wife, Olive Bessie Martin.

Amy had a sister, Pearl, who lived in Augusta as well. Pearl was married to Ralph W. Bowen, and from what I can tell, they never had any children of their own. However, according to one census record, my grandfather, Nathan Hineman was living with them shortly after his mother died from TB.

Any info would be appreciated!

The Setting: A Hellogoodbye/Hanson Concert at the Boston House of Blues.

The Situation: Hanson was finishing up their set, Hellogoodbye had already played. I’d just heard the only song I care about, “Mmmbop,” and so I was walking to meet up with my friends Jenny and Claire in the restaurant area. I was looking at some posters before going to the restaurant when a girl ran up and asked the merch stand guy for a sharpie, because Hellogoodbye was just chilling in the audience. This piqued my interest, and so when she received the sharpie I followed her about ten feet back into the concert hall, where, sure enough, I saw lead singer Forrest Kline, standing out in the orange knit cap he’d been wearing that night. After the sharpie girl got her shit signed, I borrowed the sharpie and approached Forrest. By the way, everything Forrest said was with a smile and upbeat, so kudos to him for being a nice guy when I was probably annoying the hell out of him.

Forrest Kline, in a tender moment before partaking in coitus with a kangaroo. That's my guess, at least.

What went down:

Me: Hey, could you sign my ticket?

Forrest: Sure. (He signs)

Me: Thanks! By the way…long socks…I’m trying to bring them back. (I point to my long argyle socks and my jeans rolled up, exposing them.) I’m trying to start a trend, so if there’s anything you can do, please keep that in mind.

Forrest: Haha, ok. Very nice.

I go show off my ticket to Claire and she wants to come get something signed. Claire asks Forrest if he’ll sign her ticket, but he has no sharpie of his own, so Claire finds one. He begins to sign her arm.

Me: Hey Forrest, what’s your favorite fruit?

Forrest: Favorite food?

Me: No, favorite fruit.

Forrest: Oh. Avocado.

Me: Ohhhh, that explains a lot.

Forrest: Yeah.

The conversation pretty much ended there and we went back to the restaurant and told Jenny what happened. Jenny asked if we got pictures, and I was like “Oh snap we didn’t!” Claire didn’t want to harass the poor guy any more, but I figured this would be the last time, so whatever. I went back into the concert hall and there was no Forrest! I guess we’d scared him away.

But I recognized a few other members of the band, and approached Joe Marro, the keyboardist of the band. Before Joe was a member of HelloGoodbye, he was in one of my favorite bands, The Early November, so I was especially psyched to meet him.

Joe Marro. Why do all members of HelloGoodbye pose with animals?

Me: I love you.

Joe: Thanks.

Me: Thank you for doing what you do. You’re the man.

Joe: Huh?

Me: THANK YOU FOR DOING WHAT YOU DO. YOU’RE THE MAN.

Joe: Ohhh, no problem.

Me: Can I have a picture with you guys?

Then some lady took a picture with two of the guys and yeah. Later on I was walking back from the merch store and ran into Joe again.

Me: Hey, I just wanted to say that I vandalized your wikipedia page one time, but I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it.

Joe: Wikipedia page?

Me: For Hellogoodbye.

Joe: Oh. No problem.

He walks away.

Foil, fighting and causing no good are what the Hanson’s were about in the movie. Becoming a student of the game is what Christian Hanson is becoming known for, instead. (NHL.com)

Remember Team Canada hero Matt Halischuk? He’s the one who scored Canada’s goal in overtime against Team Sweden to secure gold at the 2008 World Junior Championships. It would hard to top that, but Halischuk’s first NHL goal at the expense of Jose Theodore of the Washington Capitals may have a bigger place in his heart. (NHL.com)

Calgary Hitmen goaltender Martin Jones saved one of his best performances of the season for Willie Desjardins and the Medicine Hat Tigers. Desjardins, of course, is Team Canada’s head coach for the World Junior Championships – a team Jones desperately wants to tend the net for. (Slam! Sports)

Talk about siezing an opportunity. Injuries to Alex Ovechkin and Mike Knuble among others has allowed Mathieu Perreault of the Washington Capitals a chance to make his NHL debut. Perreault’s done more than that, tallying two goals and five points in four games while playing 11 minutes per game. The sixth round pick from 2006 is paying dividends for the depleted Capitals. (NHL.com)

by Lindsay Kramer || NHL.com

Toronto Marlies coach Dallas Eakins admits he was suckered in by the image.

And that’s understandable, considering the image that Dave Hanson projected in the iconic movie “Slap Shot.”

Eakins said if you’d have told him that one of the Hanson Brothers had a son, considering the on-screen craziness of the dad, he would have guessed the off-spring would be a real beaut.

And Eakins was right, for all the wrong reasons. He now coaches Christian Hanson, son of Dave. Christian does indeed enthrall Eakins, but that has nothing to do with the fictional freak show Dave created with his movie character Jack Hanson.

“He is so diligent at his game. He is so coachable. And he’s an intelligent,” Eakins said. “This kid, even though he’s a first-year pro, carries himself like an NHL player. He is going to be in the NHL. He is going to find a way. I see it in his eyes.”

It’s tempting to look at those eyes and envision the horned-rimmed glasses sitting on the stringy-haired mug made famous by his father’s alter ego. But that’d be missing the point. With five goals and eight assists in 14 games, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound wing is one of the emerging rookie forces in the AHL.

And the importance of this season reaches beyond the statistics. As much as Christian embraces the lore of what his father helped create, he also charges hard in the other direction to give his own talent some breathing room.

“I’m hoping to make a career out of this, when people see the name Christian Hanson, they think of a hockey player first, and not the son of Dave Hanson,” he said. “I’m more than just the son of a famous hockey player.”

Anyone who has spent more than five minutes in a hockey dressing room knows that lines from “Slap Shot” are tossed around more often than rolls of tape. When Hanson hears them he eagerly jumps right in with his own performance, even though the dialogue by now is literally embedded in his DNA.

“I love it. The guys throw the lines at me, I’ll throw it right back at them,” said Hanson, 23. “I’ll talk about (the movie) until the cows come home.”

As entertaining as that sounds, there are so many more topics Hanson can cover. He earned a degree in finance from Notre Dame. You can ask him about conditioning, how he gutted out so many sprint intervals on a stationary bike last summer to get in shape for the pros that he should have been granted an honorary yellow jersey.

He’ll be glad to crow about his change from center in college to wing now, a move that the Toronto organization correctly figured would allow him to more easily rush the net for those blue-collar goals.

“There was a couple things I had to work on,” he said of the switch. “You find yourself thinking like a center, whereas I have to take care of my duties of a wing. As a center, I had a pass-first mentality coming through the neutral zone. As a (wing), they want you to put the puck on your stick and drive to the net.”

Eakins, of course, looks at his prospect and sees a natural hot out of the power forward mold.

“He’s been incredible at upping his physical game,” Eakins said. “When he’s on the ice, the other team knows it. He finishes his check hard every time. He’s figuring out how he’s going to be a regular in the NHL. That’s by being a power forward.”

Eakins holds Hanson up as Example A on a number of topics. Want to see how a pro athlete is supposed to eat? Look at Hanson. How much sweat should you put out at practice? Look at Hanson.

That is the true legacy of growing up the son of Dave Hanson (a former pro himself), a role that Christian said he never viewed as a burden.

“I never found it tough. I never thought it was easy. It something I always had,” Christian said. “He’s such a mild-mannered guy. To see him up there (on the screen) beating up guys is great. When he was off the ice, he was ‘please’ and ‘thank you,’ and saying hello to everybody.”

But sometimes reel and real blend indecipherably. Eakins said he was once running a practice and looked up in the stands to see Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke talking to Dave Hanson. Imagine that, Eakins laughed. There’s a Hanson brother in the flesh and blood, right up there, talking to my boss.

Christian said he’ll run into the occasional opponent who figures that Dave’s fictional personality is actually something that the son inherited in his game. What could be cooler, they think, than chirping and trying to beat up such hockey royalty?

“You take the good with the bad,” Christian said. “You just skate away, don’t give them the time of day.”

Christian does offer a ready-made one-liner when asked how the silver screen Dave Hanson would fare in a hockey game against the real-life newer version.

“I don’t know. He’d probably be in the penalty box when I’m on the ice,” Christian quipped.

That’s probably for the best. A distinct separation of make-believe and reality has worked out well for both men. If there’s a Hollywood ending in store for Christian’s career, he wants it to come on a sheet of ice in front of a live, rowdy Maple Leafs crowd.

“Right now, I’m worried about my rookie year, make a good first impression, make the big squad and stick,” he said. “The movie business is his. I’ll stick with hockey.”

Lindsay Kramer, the AHL correspondent for NHL.com, profiles an up-and-coming player each Monday during the season, and his AHL notebook appears each Thursday on NHL.com.

If you know me well, you are sitting in front of your computer chuckling right now. Simply, of cours

If you know me well, you are sitting in front of your computer chuckling right now. Simply, of course I chose “MMMBop” for 1997. There was no other choice.

I hated Hanson and “MMMBop” when they first arrived on the scene in 1997. A fifth grader with a mind of my own, I was just a couple of years late to the grunge party. I made a regular habit of wearing oversized corduroys with big flannel shirts when not in the tie-dyed Cool as a Moose T-Shirt and adidas wind pants that may as well have been my uniform (yes, I did get made fun of in middle school). If I remember correctly, I was loving the musical stylings of the Gin Blossoms and No Doubt, and more embarrassingly The Spice Girls and The Eagles.

In short, despite some seriously poor judgment in the fashion department, I could recognize Hanson as being pretty fucking terrible. Even though it was cool that Zac Hanson was my age, I couldn’t tell if he was a boy or a girl; I had no idea what the hell “MMMBop” was about and it seemed nonsensical; and I have always been turned off by crazed tweens and whatever they’re screaming about.

I later came to my senses. I could not tell you when the switch was flipped, but probably sometime around 2003. “MMMBop” is the greatest song ever written.

As far as I can tell, an “MMMBop” is an interval of time, an interval that may be short or long, depending on the context in which it is used. Sort of like how Rhode Island can be small when thought of as a state, or large when used as a unit of measure to approximate the size of hunks of ice that are breaking off of Antarctica.

Despite the fact that it goes about as deep as you might expect a 7th grader to bring it (and, well, that’s all you should expect from Hanson), “MMMBop” is basically a peppy reminder that the vast majority of your friends and lovers are going to end up fucking you over, so you have to take care of those who take care of you. An “MMMBop”, specifically, seems to be the amount of time after which your friends will turn into complete fucking douchebags.

If you haven’t investigated the song, you might be surprised by the lyrics.

You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You’re going through all this pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they’re gone so fast
And they’re gone so fast

So hold on the ones who really care
In the end they’ll be the only ones there
When you get old and start losing your hair
Can you tell me who will still care
Can you tell me who will still care

(lots of MMMBoping)

In an mmm bop, they’re gone
Plant a seed, plant a flower, plant a rose
You can plant any one of those
Keep planting to find out which one grows
It’s a secret no one knows
It’s a secret no one knows
No one knows

(More mmmboping and asking if you know the secret)

So, it’s catchy and it reminds you to take care of everyone you know because you never know who is going to be an asshole and who has your back.

I understand that it’s basically impossible to hear the majority of the lyrics, even when you know them, but I swear they’re there.

I don’t know why, but I really do love “MMMBop” and it seems that everyone around me knows this. I regularly get phone calls or voicemails letting me know that the masterpiece is on the radio and allowing me to listen, or excited text messages that read “mmmbop is on!” I’m not sure what this says about me, but it seems clear that a good portion of my friends associate me with the song.

and here are the brothers (the precursor to the JoBros) performing the song live in 2008

Also, yeah, they grew out of the awkward stage:

No I don’t know why I did that either, but at the same time I couldn’t resist, well I

No I don’t know why I did that either, but at the same time I couldn’t resist, well I’m sure we’ll find all sorts of things like that in our lifetime! <<WAT! Anyway, on that note we return to the matter in hand, this blog! Now in my last few blogs I have been bragging about how much, well, nothing really happens, not saying thats particularly changed, but, well, a few things have happened over the last few days I thought I’d share with the world!

We’re off to see Nickelback!
I know what you’re thinking, damn Ben why didn’t you add that in to your blog title, thats pretty epic, dude, or something, but well the reason I didn’t is … well, let me explain. On Wednesday night I got a phone call from Rob asking if I wanted to see Nickelback, and I was like, well, yeah of course, so agreed that the details would be filled tomorrow, which would also be when it would happen, put the phone down. So, I’m like, yeh, Nickelback gig, rock on! Then, I later found out that it actually was the Christmas Light switch on at Leeds, which would be still alright had it not be for my Mum informing me from Real Radio, who just so happen to organise this event of epicness, so yeh brill, trust me the replacement is worth waiting for!
So, me, Rob and James (Rob’s brother) set off to the bus stop where we met Ben (not me obviously) and set off to the bus stop where we we’re to go to Dewsbury to meet Trish, who’s Trish, well its Rob’s new GF, don’t you read my blogs, arrrghghh! ….Anyway, so, bus to Dewsbury, train to Leeds, wooo train. I actually got an extreemly cheap ticket for the train, I had £10 and it was like 30-odd pence, yeh love carrying that change, then my ticket never got checked so in reality I could of probably just not got one and enjoyed a light pocket, but I now had a determined challenge to spend my change through the day, wayy! So, we arrived in Leeds and who did I see, well, on Rob’s birthday I saw Ashley from College, well this time I saw Michael from College, when I’m saying from College, I mean last year when the course wasn’t full of di**s. So, had a chat to him, turned out he was off to the same place but was meeting his girlfriend, so yeh, so eventually I joined the gang and continued on to the rather expectedly large crowd. It was absolutely chucking it down which was bad, the Nickelback not performing was confirmed, ugghh, but Pixie Lott is still coming, wopty flipping duu, refrain me from doing summersaults in excitement, OK maybe that was harsh, if anything she’s quite good looking, anyway, and my age + 1, I know, bonus, anyway again, but the fact that Nickelback wasn’t here meant they’d to fill the gap and who with, well the first was the crap X-Factor singer who had that hideous dress and was fat, link at the bottom of this blog of a YouTube link. But then, ooo it all started to kick off, on the stage came Loraine Kelly!!! OH MY GOD, IT’S that one from LK Today thats on when I’m either not awake or at college, or have much better things to do or watch. Then when they filled the rest in with idiots dressed in costumes singing ‘Frosty The Snowman’ which call me rather weird I don’t actually know the words to, I think we’d had enough, definitely Ben had, Rob later said it wasn’t happy that Ben didn’t like it, but, Rob, seriously, face it, it wasn’t the best of shows! Anyway, so, where to go now, well, we ended up tracing all the way back to Cleck and going to Weatherspoons, then James had to go home, and huhh, so Ben took James home and I was left with Rob and Trish, who later had probably the biggest fuss to going home I’ve ever seen, seriously if I had a Guinness World Record adjudicator with me, we’d have a record on our hands, all I’m gonna say is he wasn’t like that with Beth, so thats a good sign, anyway, look at me talking about people on here, oo! It’s not like I’ve revealed that some people **** in the toilets and shout it on an almost full bus or anything! I think we’re even. Anywho, so yeh, so I went with them for the journey and ooo it was indeed a fun journey, to Dewsbury, then in the Red Corner, Rob “Fore the Taxi” and in the Blue Corner, Trish “I’ll walk I’ll be fine”. I’m not dissing them, I’ve just never seen someone have so much fuss over each other, anyway, when the night ended we got home, on the same bus as well, ooo! But then came a bluddy other trouble, just as we were getting close to our stop, the bus lights turn off and he goes the otehr way, ARTGHH, so we ran out of the bus basically, we almost got deported!
YEAH! Anyway, oh yeh I spent my money on McDonnalds, I got Large and a Small portion of fries as their just isn’t enough in the portion of large, don’t you tink, oo and some Munchies! Spent rest today on Lucozade and toast, woo living the high life me!
When I got home I gave my Mum a heart attack which was kinda funny, it probably wouldn’t be if it was an actual heart attack but ya know what I mean.

Anyway, just gonna finish by letting you know that Windows 7 Review will happen when it happens, the RKUK Toolbar will have an update soon with Yahoo! Bing and Dogpile search added, thanks for the requests guys. We’ve got a proxy site, oh and Selection 77 is out. Breath it, breath out, it is indeed all starting to happen. Such a pity its gonna absolutely pi** it down all weekend … bugger. Oh well, I’m a Celeb starts on Sunday and of course X-Factor where surely Lloyd should go now!

Anyway, thats all for now, E-Ya Later

october 13th: texas state history museum

my department has in our budget two outings per year. usually the department opts to go to lunch, this time we went to the bob bullock texas history museum and to the imax movie under the sea.

october 15th: hanson

october 15th began my weekend in new york with my sister! thursday was spent traveling and catching up on some sleep. it just so happened that after she asked if i wanted to go, hanson released their fall tour dates and were in new york that day. so we went and had a great time. no pictures from the actual concert because the nokia theatre is one of those dumb venues that won’t allow you to have a detachable lens.

time square!

the moving t-rex at the toys r us in times square

october 16th: day o’ adventure

what a day. what a never ending day. it started with seeing maurice sendak’s original drafts and drawings for where the wild things are at the morgan library. it was a small exhibit, but super amazing to see. especially to when you realize how much work he put into this book with so few actual lines of text. there were also drafts of drawings that didn’t make it into the book. the library itself was insane. it’s was beautiful and old and awesome. i also saw a small collection of puccini including drafts of la boheme.

and then onto the natural history museum where i spent the rest of the day. i saw a movie about space and a space machine that looked alot like wall-e and a meteorite and lots and lots of bones of crazy looking creatures and stuffed versions of animals from all over the world. and then i had an overpriced salad and soda at one of the cafes. because that’s what you do. it was amazing. i could spend days there.

things that will haunt your dreams.

and then it was off to the show!

mama mia was wonderful! i didn’t see the movie and while the plot line was obviously a little weak, it was definitely a fun filled show. plus i was at a broadway show with my sister, so it really just doesn’t get much better.

we skipped dinner to hang out with these guys for awhile, you know, chatting on the phone and catching bad guys. then it was off to starbucks for a quick hug to the employees. a black and white cookie for a snack and off to bed!

october 17th: wild thing.

do you get the feeling i was excited about this movie coming out?

i spent a little while at the new york public library’s children’s library getting my picture taken with a wild thing. i look ridiculous in the photo though, so the world may never see it. i took the subway to the upper east side to have lunch with my sister at luke’s

think i looked silly riding the subway like this? that’s one very cold wild thing.

and then it was off to the met! i really didn’t realize just how huge this place is. it would take me weeks to make it through the whole thing. especially in the unbroken in boots that i decided to wear. so i got my ticket, checked my coat, sat down with the map of the exhibits and made a plan. i feel like i saw everything that i wanted to see most.

first stop was egypt and a tomb inside of the museum.

after egypt i decided to invest in a headset tour guide. my sister suggested it. she was so right. death of socrates.

degas the little fourteen year old dancer that i am in love with. she bronze with pink tinted shoes, a cotton skirt and a silk bow in her hair. i never knew degas did anything but paint. i was very impressed.

for peter, some of degas horse sculptures.

more dancers.

picasso’s the blind man’s meal

van gogh’s wheat field with cypresses. van gogh was nuts.

and andy warhol!

i also saw a real shark in a glass case of formaldehyde/emotion (also called the physical impossiblity of death in the mind of someone living. pictures weren’t allowed so this is not my picture.) and some an amazing exhibit of robert frank’s the americans (if you don’t click on any other link, click on that one, trust me.)

after that i decided that my feet hurt too badly to funtion any longer so i decided to head back to the subway.

upper east side is so fancy.

after that was west side story. which was pretty amazing. i think it may have been one of the first musicals i saw that i really loved. and then my sister was in it and so i had an even bigger reason to love it.

yay sisters!

and my favorite picture. overall, what an amazing, awesome trip. i have the world’s best sister.

i need a break from the mundane task of scanning people’s charts to reflect on the complete and utter AMAZINGNESS of what was last night.

there are certain “milestones” you reach as a hanson fan. first walk, first meet and greet, first time front row. last night was my “first last show,” meaning of the tour. known not only for the no-holds-barred pranks that go down during the show, but for the complete release of energy and awesomeness, getting to experience the last show of a tour has been an honor and privilege that few people get to experience (mostly because they only happen once a tour. duh). i finally got my first last show.

it was everything i hoped for and more.

last night’s show at the house of blues in anaheim goes down in my history books as the greatest hanson concert (or really any concert) i’ve been to. there are no words, and not just because i’m at work almost completely unable to talk without my voice breaking. i’ve never experienced a post-concert high like this, and the only thing bringing me down is the fact that i’m back in the office down the same old shit; then again, not even this is putting me in that bad of a mood.

i also had a meet and greet, which turned out to be a less-than stellar experience. this is by no means the fault of the band; they were as gracious and friendly as they had been when i met them five years ago as as senior in high school. the fault lies with me. basically, i choked on my own words. i had so much that i wanted to say to them that they all got stuck in my throat and nothing came out. i couldn’t even make stupid small talk. i tried to make a joke with zac, but i wasn’t sure if he understood what i was saying, which intimidated me even more into not saying anything. had i at least been able to have a short conversation with any of them i would have been okay. i’m left with only the want to kick myself continuously in the face. oh well, here’s to next time.

other than the fail of a meet and greet i had, last night was nothing short of amazing. i’ve never been more excited for a new album/tour before in my life. hopefully it won’t fall under the circumstances that i’ve found myself in as of late, and i can go in happy without needing an escape.

let me tell you, though, i’ve never been more happy or appreciative of what this band has done for me in my whole life than in this moment right now. they are truly amazing people, and i have no doubt in my mind that, even when it all goes to shit, they’ll be my favorite band no matter what.

While actress Milla Jovovich may be trying to draw in your attention with talk of extraterrestrial o

While actress Milla Jovovich may be trying to draw in your attention with talk of extraterrestrial owls and an imminent fear of the fourth kind, there’s a phenomenon that has been slowly gaining momentum in the music world….

Bands and musicians have been switching members and pairing up like Xenon Octa-Flouride (XeF8) would, if it ever is going to be invented (thanks Wikipedia!). In layman’s terms, we’ve been getting a lot of new supergroups, side projects, and collaborations – some that could have been foreseen, and others that seem to have appeared out of nowhere.

The Almanac Singers seen here with Bess Hawes, Arthur Stern and Sis Cunningham

Now, the idea of a supergroup is not a recent innovation by any stretch of the imagination – the supergroup goes all the way back to the Almanac Singers - a combination of Millard Lampell, Lee Hayes, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie that got its start in 1940. From the 60’s until today, we have been given plenty more supergroups, such as in 1969 which brought us both The Plastic Ono Band (which included the likes of Eric Clapton, both George Harrison and Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and Alan White – just to name a few) as well as Blind Faith (which also featured Mr. Clapton, but had Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood and Ric Grech to boot). 1988 brought us the Traveling Wilburys, which was the tour de force of George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. And although they Wilburys only stuck together for about a year after Orbison’s death, that cosmic aligning is something that has not met it’s match… yet.

The Monsters of Folk

Among the recent crop of supergroups is a group I mentioned last week – The Monsters of Folk, which consists of folk songsters Connor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes, M. Ward of She & Him, and Jim James from My Morning Jacket. They’ve been associated under the Monsters name since 2004, but have all been so busy with their respective main attractions that they weren’t able to release their self-titled first album until this year. You’ve definitely heard their track “Say Please” on the Peak – and both M. Ward and Connor Oberst gave free concerts in NYC this summer!

Ben Gibbard and Jay Farrar

Moving down the line from most folky to least, next up is the recent pairing of Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard with Jay Farrar, member of Uncle Tupelo and frontman for Son Volt, the two bands that he played with throughout the 90’s before he launched his solo career in 2001. Gibbard and Farrar first got together in 2007 to record the soundtrack for One Fast Move and I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur. Both the movie and the album came out on October 20th, the day before the 40th anniversary of the prolific author’s death. You can see the music video for “San Fransisco”, the last track on the album, here. And you can expect to see more from them in the future.

Taking a detour into the realm of electronica, at the end of September, Thom Yorke, the lead singer of Radiohead, slipped this little surprise into his blog:

hi

in the past couple of weeks i’ve been getting a band together for fun to play the eraser stuff live and the new songs etc.. to see if it could work!

here’s a photo.. its me, joey waronker, mauro refosco, flea and nigel godrich.

at the beginning of october the 4th and 5th we are going to do a couple of shows at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.

we don’t really have a name and the set will not be very long cuz ..well …we haven’t got that much material yet!

Thom Yorke and Flea

Of course, those shows were sold out in 20 minutes. Flea, as you know, is the Red Hot Chili Peppers Bassist – and he seemed to be ecstatic to be on stage with Yorke, playing cuts from Yorke’s solo album The Eraser (2006). There hasn’t been a follow-up to the October concerts, but that’s something you should keep an eye out for as well.

Jack White and Alison Mosshart sharing the mike at Glastonbury this year

Next up come two really driving groups. First is The Dead Weather, whose song “Hang You Up From the Heavens” I featured in my first week of blog-writing. The Dead Weather was formed by Jack White who’s been extremely active – leaping from the White Stripes, to the Raconteurs, to the recent release of “It Might Get Loud” – a documentary featuring White, The Edge, and Jimmy Page. The band also features Alison Mosshart of the Kills on lead vocals, Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age and Jack Lawrence, who played with White in the Raconteurs. And to sweeten the deal, they just announced a show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 17th! Tickets for that are going on Sale this friday, so get ‘em quick.

The "Them Crooked Vultures" teaser photo from earlier this fall

And finally, we come to Them Crooked Vultures, or TCV as they call themselves. TCV is big news. On drums is Dave Grohl, from Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. On vocals and guitar is Josh Homme, from the Queens of the Stone Age. The kicker is that John Paul Jones comes soaring in on bass. They’ve got a really great sound, full and rocking, but what remains to be seen is whether TCV will be able to stay afloat once their star power has worn off. Their self-titled first record is due out on Sony in a week, which should be an insta-grab for all hard rock fans. But for now, check out the full album on the band’s website!

So, I apologize about all the name dropping – it’s not something I routinely do. If you think a supergroup has been left out, please let me know. Or if you feel the need to justify the Tinted Windows‘ existence, by all means, please try. But if you do, I’ll kindly remind you that their lead singer is from Hanson, and we’ll go our separate ways. Wikipedia to the rescue once again!

——————————–
