Happy hour…the place where you can kick back and enjoy a beer from one of Austin Brew’s selections, or a simple cocktail.

As an early pre-party Thanksgiving celebration, a few of my friends and I went downtown to McCormick & Schmick’s for their late night happy hour. Their usual happy hour last until 7pm, but their second happy hour is from 9-10 pm. This works out great for my schedule, since I’m a busy college student who works and goes to school.

McCormick & Schmick’s offer great seafood dinner plates that cost about $20 during normal business hours. The place would be ideal for a nice romantic date. During happy hour, a few selected items cost $1.95-$4.95.

Laura looking at the menu.

I really enjoyed McCormicks, it’s affordable and good. Appetizers during happy hour are cheap. I was really hungry so I got calamari, buffalo quesadillas, and a Sangria. I’m usually a margarita type of girl but since they don’t offer frozen margaritas, I’d thought it would be nice to try a new cocktail.

Buffalo Quesadillas

Graduating UT senior Fnan Gelai said she would go back to McCormick & Schmicks. “I really like it a lot it’s a really good happy hour for college students. I think it’s very reasonable and the food was good…but they need to have frozen margaritas,”said Gelai.

Overall, the night ended great. We are all so busy that it was great to meet up and unwind for girls night out.

Via San Vito 5, Milano
Tel: 02/8376587

Foodometro™
•Drinks: di ottima fattura. 8
•Cibo: tanta robba e non male. 7
•Giudizio finale: quasi eccellente.

Algo assim. Não me pergunte as marcas pq eu manjo naaaaaaada.

It’s like a bourgeois burger bar.

When CityNorth opened about a year ago in north Phoenix, it had upscale shopping, hip cutting-edge people moving into the loft spaces, and the anticipation of larger shops. But the most exciting things were all the new restaurants. One of the most exciting was 25 Degrees, an ultra-glam-vintage-modern burger bistro that mixes gourmet techniques into the best comfort food around.

They have four burgers that they’ve crafted brilliantly, ranging from their “number one” (caramelized onion, gorgonzola, crescenza, bacon), to the “number three” (mezzo secco jack, green chili, chipotle, avocado), and their “number four” with yellowfin tuna has sent people swooning.

But those daring to create their own are rewarded with the best-of-the-best choices in meat (sirloin, turkey, veggie), and their cheese selection is more extensive than most wine bars, and is from all over the world. Paired with one of their 14 homemade sauces, you really can’t go wrong.

I will mandate you to get their onion rings, though, which are hand battered and dipped and yes, there is a difference. My main problem when I go is deciding burger or non-burger, since their grilled three cheese sandwich or their fried egg sandwich really rocks my world.

For the beverages, a man from Chicago said it was the best Guinness milkshake he’s ever had anywhere. I was too glued to my chocolate malt to pull myself away. Another option is their PBR on-tap, a patron’s favorite.

All-in-all, it’s a must-go. (And a must-stuff-your-face.)

Peter Wolff, Los Angeles based yoga instructor, is guest blogging for us this month as we explore yoga throughout LA.

Perhaps it’s word of mouth recommendation, or maybe it’s the numerous studies that have shown the wellness benefits of yoga, but no matter how it happened, yoga is mainstream. So you’ve made the decision, “I’m getting myself to a yoga class.” Now the next step is to find out where to learn and practice.

I’m an advocate of plugging into the resources that are closest to you. Finding a teacher that you like is important, and so is finding a teacher close to home or work. Staying “in the neighborhood” is good for the planet and reduces your stress from driving, especially if you are an urban dweller.

Thankfully, all the research can be done at yogamates.com, a comprehensive online resource for the yoga community. Click on “Studio” and then the “FIND” link to do a radius search for studios around your zip code. By the way, the site and its founder, Christopher Miglino, recently made the Ultimate Wellness Game Changer list in the Huffington Post.

Peter teaches on-site hatha yoga classes for businesses, as well as customized private instruction, specializing in therapeutic yoga. To schedule a yoga session for your office contact him at peter@yogasounds.net, or 323.939.0322. www.yogasounds.net

Good news for all sellers of intoxicating intoxicants and their happy hour-loving customers: the adm

Good news for all sellers of intoxicating intoxicants and their happy hour-loving customers: the administrative guard dog charged with barking at local bars and their patrons about their alcohol-loving ways (read: the Oregon Liquor Control Commission) may be retracting its fangs about happy hour advertisements. The OLCC voted to initiate rule-making on October 15 and is currently soliciting opinions from licensees and industry representatives (and probably those god-awful moderation groups who think happy hour leads to looser morals, binge drinking, car accidents, unplanned pregnancy, and the breakdown of civilization as we know it).

As those in the business of pouring tasty libations in Oregon will attest, the OLCC has traditionally been a head case about advertising discounted drinks for happy hours. Under the current rule, OAR 845-007-0020, a liquor-serving business in Oregon may not advertise temporary discounts on alcohol outside of its place of business. As ridiculous as this sounds, even using the words “happy hour” in reference to alcohol is prohibited under the current rule.

The proposed revision, available here, would read:

(2) The Commission prohibits any advertising of the promotional practices that are prohibited under OAR 845-006-0345(10). In addition, the Commission prohibits advertising outside the licensed premises that contains the price of an alcoholic beverage to be consumed on the premises if the advertised price is a temporarily reduced price (for example, $2.00 draft beer on Fridays or $4.50 well drinks 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.).

Although this revision would still prohibit references to the actual price of the alcoholic beverage in question, it’s still a considerable improvement from the current nonsense, which reads:

(2) The Commission prohibits references to temporary price reductions for alcoholic beverages to be consumed on the licensed premises. These references include “happy hour,” “dimers,” “two-for-one,” “social adjustment hour,” “free,” or similar terms. The licensee may make references to temporary price reductions inside the licensed premises if the reference is not visible from the outside.

Before you get too excited, the revision has little to do with the OLCC changing it’s liquor-loathing ways and more to do with practicality: the OLCC simply lacks the resources to enforce the current rule across the wide spectrum of advertising mediums available to the modern Oregon bar. Conventional print media, online advertising, social media sites, Twitter streams, and the like bombard Oregon consumers with potential places to whet their whistles after work. The OLCC currently employs only 49 liquor inspectors.
At least we can all look forward to ads for the “cheapest PBR in town,” even if we don’t know exactly how cheap.

Might need to rename that 5:00 to 6:00 hour spent around a wooden table in a yarn shop called The Studio. Might need to call it “Laughter Hour”, as in stomach-hurting laughter. Cindy planned a “Meet The Authors” event and spread the table with wine, snacks and amazing good cheer. Mary K., true to her gentle nature, was considerate and supportive. Road Goddess and Kristi knitted while the conversation volleyed between Four Ordinary Women, Debra’s situation, Cindy’s history with The Studio, and some very insightful questions from Diane. And who could forget Kristi’s focused efforts to keep the authors on the true path to humility. That was fun.
There was even a bonus. Chris, a former kindergarten student and now graduate student, came with his dad, Mike, to say hello. Perfect.
As always, Wood added a touch of class by taking photos for the website, www.fourordinarywomen.com
Yarn. A new tie that binds. Thank you, Cindy.

Last week, a few of the Sac Foodies were invited to attend the grand opening celebration for Ten22 restaurant in Old Sacramento. Since we had also been invited to a preview tasting a few months back, we were really looking forward to seeing how the restaurant had turned out now that it is officially open!

The four of us had a great time feasting on appetizers and enjoying the complimentary drinks while mingling with friends and fellow foodies. Even the mayor stopped by and expressed his excitement about the new restaurant opening and the jobs that have been created as a result.

We especially loved the huge outdoor patio and fire pit area – we’re already envisioning many a happy hour spent out there! The welcoming attitude of the owner and staff along with the casual atmosphere are sure to make Ten22 an Old Sacramento hit. And we couldn’t be happier to have a new hangout just a few blocks from the office – see you soon Ten22!

While we were in Sydney, our friends (Ben and Phoebe) brought us to a pub in a secluded area near the city. It’s surrounded by houses. Just like my title, it’s a CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP place to eat lunch. I would recommend to anyone that is either in Sydney or going to Sydney to try out this place. The whole menu (over 20 mains to choose from) is basically $10. You can choose from steak (yes, a whole piece of steak with two sides), bangers and mash, BBQ Ribs which we tried and many others. During Happy Hour (3pm-6pm), $2.50 for schooners and house wine are $3 for house spirits.

BBQ Ribs

As it was our tea break (it’s only during our holidays that we eat 5 times a day), we shared a HUGE plate of BBQ ribs on a king sized bed of chips. For $10, it’s worth every single penny dollar or even more. Taste-wise, it could have been better but who is going to complain with a price like this. As expected, we couldn’t finish it.

It was a hot day and I had 2 pints of beer to go with the ribs. Ahhhhhhh……. You can imagine the satisfaction I had that afternoon.

Steakhouses are all the rage in Bellevue these days (Daniel’s, El Gaucho) so The Sessionista met up with Fountain of Youth (“Foy” for short) at restaurateur and executive chef John Howie’s new self-named endeavor for a little happy hour action. As the mastermind behind SeaStar and once the executive chef of Palisade, this new anchor at The Bravern was bound to be good for the tummy (if not the wallet). Foy was stuck in mega traffic so The Sessionista took advantage of the extra time she had to address her woeful outfit. Dipped into Anthropologie and purchased an awesome bedazzled tank and wrap for only $19.95/piece! Walked out of the store wearing the new duds (well, paid first), and gingerly picked through the rain to get to John Howie Steak.

Inside, the bar was big but filled with A LOT of furniture which was a little peculiar. The Sessionista grabbed a red leather club chair and perused the 20+ page bar menu while waiting for Foy. Happy Hour started at 3:00pm, and by 4:00pm there wasn’t a ton of action (although it WAS a Tuesday…). Once Foy beat the evil 405 traffic and arrived, we picked drinks (a $4 Spanish Vina Reboreda house white wine for The Sessionista and a $5 Rhubarb DRY Soda for Foy- Go figure, being a boozer is cheaper than not!) then got down to the serious business of choosing food.

The happy hour specials were delicious-looking: lots of bacon, fried things and other cholesterol-laden bits to choose from. Foy and The Sessionista settled on two items- the BLT Sliders ($6) and Crispy Fried Ricotta Gnocchi ($5). The sliders were tasty- crisp bacon, lettuce and tomato plus a little aioli, served on circular, crustless white toast. Delish! Plus, the BLTs came with a generous portion of Parmesan Reggiano chips (also available as a separate side on the bar menu). Our second choice was equally yum, although the ricotta bites tasted a bit garlicky (The Sessionista is not entirely positive what she was eating. Fried ricotta? There was no pasta/dough in sight). Regardless, it was tasty and a generous portion, which is all The Sessionista generally cares about.

While the food and drink were a treat, the atmosphere was a bit blah. The Sessionista kept getting her fat thigh stuck under the table (seriously, it was as if no one bothered to make sure the chairs and tables fit well together. One would have to have the thigh of Twiggy to be comfortable). Plus, there was no view from the bar (unless you count the rain-slicked walkways of The Bravern), a big minus considering its biggest competitor, Daniel’s, offers a fantastic view of the city.

By 6:20pm, when The Sessionista and Foy said their good-byes, life in the bar had picked up, mostly with after-work types streaming in from Microsoft and the other surrounding businesses (all apparently able to afford the post-HH prices). The Sessionista was definitely on the YOUNG end of the clientele (and of course Foy, who looks about 28).

Highlights: Comped parking (although The Sessionista lost her car for the FIRST TIME EVER in the mega-strange garage…), excellent inexpensive HH food, good house wine

Lowlights: Lame view, lack of drink specials, uncomfortable chair/table combos (grab the regular style chairs if you go, trust Sessionista on this one)

Sessionista Says: Worth trying- good prices, good food and good wine (otherwise slim on the drink specials, unless you like Bud Light ($2) or straight martinis. Not a fufu drink to be found!). But stick to Daniel’s on those gorgeous days where you want to take in the view.
