When I was in high school, I liked math. In 9th grade I took geometry with Ms. Johnson; 10th grade was Algebra II with Mrs. Duke; 11th grade was Trig/Analytic Geometry with Ms. Marlette; and my senior year was Calculus with Mr. Kroft. I earned As in those courses, except for Calculus, where I got a B for the year. I really enjoyed those subjects, especially geometry and algebra. Trig/Analyt was … interesting. I think I might have earned A’s solely on notebook quizzes. Then, I learned enough in calculus to squeak by with a barely-passing score on the AP exam.

Science classes in high school were fun, too. 9th grade was Earth/Space Science with Mr. Gaines; 10th grade was Honors Biology with Mr. Couch; 11th grade was Honors Chemistry with Ms. Thurman; and 12th grade was Anatomy/Physiology with Mr. Laird, and Physics with Mr. Wolf. I received overall A’s in these courses. I might have gotten a B during one quarter in Physics.

I usually didn’t consider myself a very superficial person. When it came to my studies, I focused on the grades. I studied as much as I could, and the classroom environment encouraged a pretty healthy social setting. I made really good friends in high school sometimes just because we ended up in the same classes together. But, I also fell victim to some of the stereotypes adolescence fosters. I made good grades. I took hard classes. I was a nerd/geek/dork/dweeb. By definition, those types of people weren’t very attractive. We were bookish, mousy, homely, unkempt. And we were proud of that. And, anyone who was stylish and “cool” just wasn’t as smart as we were. So there.

This notion carried over into college. The textbooks didn’t help. I remember my biology and math books containing features of the scientists and mathematicians who contributed to the texts. Pictures of big glasses and giant (greasy/frizzy) hair and 70s collars and halfway smiles, and the sickly pallor that could only be explained by extensive exposure to fluorescent lighting and not stepping outdoors for days convinced me that the smarties were not only unattractive, but eccentric and socially aloof. I’ve seen photos of Watson and Crick and Pierre Curie and the editor of my freshman calculus text. Einstein wasn’t exactly an Adonis. I’ve seen Bunsen and Beaker.

This isn’t to say there weren’t exceptions. One of the TAs for freshman biology was quite attractive. I had a classmate in a technical writing class who majored in molecular biology. He was HOTT. I never knew scientists could be so beautiful. I didn’t know brainies could make time for skiing and rock climbing and basketball and music and dating and good hair and smelling like masculinity, even when they’re doing research 80 hours a week. They can and they do. Understanding this was a major breakthrough for me.

Then it became an obsession. I pored through my textbooks like celebrity gossip magazines. I looked at my professors. I looked at my classmates. I took note of the world away from academia. I observed the nerds who stood out and surprisingly, not all of them looked like frumpy hermits. Some of them are cute and have really pleasant personalities. I want to be their friend. Here are some examples:

Brian Greene, physicist. He’s a major promoter of String Theory. Look at his great hair and classic, ribbed sweater. Look, he’s also outdoors, by the coast, soaking in some rays. It’s hard to tell simply by looking at him that his mind is working to reconcile quantum mechanics and general relativity.

Danica McKellar, mathematician. You might have known her as Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years. Interesting thing about this show is that my 8th grade Algebra teacher loved it, especially Ben Stein’s character, and she would talk about him all the time. So I can’t think of this show without thinking about Algebra, and then an actor from its cast is actually quite a reputable, well-known mathie. PhD. She’s published a couple of books about style and math, where she suggests what stilettos and lipstick to wear as well as making math more accessible to teenage girls (and anyone else).

Becky Middleton, rocket scientist. This photo was not taken in a vacuum, but in a simulated vortex, also known as a subway car. After BYU she spent some time working at the Jet Propulsion Lab in California. Her engineering background may very well be her secret to her curly hair. How could that not make sense? This photo doesn’t explain why she’s laughing, but the chances it could be about Excel spreadsheets are pretty high. This picture proclaims nerdiness will never go out of style.

So, my impressions have changed. Scientists are dressing better. They’re getting braces. They’re getting leak-free pens for their shirt pockets. Sometimes I wish I could make that work. They’re smiling; they’re flirting. They’re confronting the world’s problems but not without noticing how attractive you are. And, they’re smooth about it. Science and math have definitely evolved. 20 years ago I would not have guessed they could be so … glamorous? Nerdiness has always been and always will be cool. But now, it happens to check itself in a mirror before leaving for the lab.

Here are some interesting statistics from American Greetings:

• 1 billion valentines are sent each year globally
• 25% of all seasonal cards are valentines, making it the 2nd largest card-sending holiday (behind Christmas)
• Over 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold annually
• 10% of engagements happen on this day

Happy Valentines Day, My Love…

Five years ago today, my Valentine flew to New York and surprised me at the end of a business trip with a fancy New York City dinner, tickets to a Broadway show and a stroll through Central Park.

After stopping to pause for a bit on a bridge as we watched the ice skaters and chatted about us, he got down on bended knee and asked me a question that would change our lives forever. Saying yes was one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Last year’s Valentine, I talked about how I did not have a Valentine since 2004.  Today is no different.  However, because of it, I managed to find time to celebrate today’s Valentine’s Day by creating a music video from Martina McBride & Jim Brickman’s “My Valentine” with Ray Winstone’s locker room scene from All In The Game.

Anyway, here’s a funny song that inspired me to do the above video…

Anyway, I just uploaded the video so it might take some time to process.  As I’m going out (to work, unfortunately), I’m posting this now…  In the meantime, somebody needs to bitchslap the lady below.  ^_^

I love my husband.  Several years ago Sean surprised me with a very romantic Valentine’s Day that I will never forget.  He left me little clues all week around the house, little love notes that I would find hidden in drawers, inside a folded towel, spice cabinet, etc.  Each little note had a special sentiment written on it and a clue about what he had planned for us on Valentine’s Day.   I loved the notes.  The anticipation was thrilling and fun!  Sean had put so much thought and effort into the Day and he made me feel so special and loved.  We decided that we wanted to do this every year, but with us taking turns planning.  So the next year I did the planning and felt so young and in love taking the time to plan a night out and coming up with a game to play the week before so he could try and guess where we were going or what we were going to do. 

This year was Sean’s turn again and he planned a great surprise!  He turned our bedroom into a romantic Bed and Breakfast Inn.  Several times we have stayed at a very cozy B&B at the Lake of the Ozarks and we love the atmosphere there and the romantic feel of the Inn.  Sue, the inn keeper always spoils us with so many little extras and it has become our most favorite place to stay, we try to go 2 times a year.   Sean knew that we couldn’t get away this time of year so he transformed our bedroom into a romantic room you might find at a B&B.  He thought of everything.  He made a wonderful breakfast of eggs, sausage and biscuits with gourmet coffee and cranberry juice.  He served it with a rose and candles.  It was so romantic and made me feel so special.  I just love my husband, he is my best friend and lover.  We have been married for almost 20 years and I can honestly say that we are still madly in love and keep growing closer and closer.  We work hard at our marriage and we have so much fun together.  Thank you- Sean for another great Valentine’s Day and keeping the spice in our life!

Hi buddies….. First of all, Wish u all a very Happy Valentine’s Day!

Second of all, trust me, I’ve been trying to understand the concept of Valentine’s Day ever since i came to know about it. If you’re the one who thinks that Valentine’s Day is a must for lovers, plz reply me the following….

Can love be bound? Is it right to declare a love specific day? Why proposing on Valentine’s Day actually shows you love someone? What if anyone falls in love with some one on Feb 15, should he/she wait for the next Valentine’s Day? How feelings can be forced to work in a specific manner on a particular day? Who says that a proposal on Valentine’s Day is never rejected? Is giving a chocolate/rose, whatever people do, on Valentine’s Day expresses love? Is not it like a day when gals offer themselves to boys or vice versa….cheapest job? The love-image for you from here

Actually, what i think, if you propose your partner on Valentine’s Day, it simple means you’re not listening to your heart and doing what others are doing…. nay, that’s not LOVE. For me, Love is a feeling and feelings never think. Loving someone means sharing the best part of your day with him/her and spending most of your time thinking for him/her and of course, he/she becomes your dream boy/gal….. right! And, then comes the day when you’re forced or compelled to express your love towards him/her… how anyone can? I mean, at least i can’t. Honestly, I’ve never fallen in love yet so it may be a reason of my thinking like that. Lovers may have their own reasons and logic…. sorry, if i am wrong?If you’re a true lover, you can’t force yourself to wait for a specific day…… this sweet feeling can’t be put behind the bars n can’t wait to be expressed….

And, the worst part of the deal is that the day works like a gift-day especially for gals. And, no one can ever imagine how many gifts from how many boyfriends… a very situational joke, A guy goes to Archies’ and asks for a greeting card with ‘Be My Valentine’. He chose the card and said to the salesman…. plz arrange 15 of same sort!

That’s love nowadays and if you’re away from this curse, you’re lucky Man. Loving someone is not bad….. but always remember SOMEONE, not ANYONE!

Love someone to its extent and never wait for any day, especially Valentine’s Day, to express your feelings…. in fact, i think no one ever needs to express love, the person in front always has the same feelings, most probably

And, never forget… Mama, Dad, bro n sis all love u, expecting someone else’s love is a good thing but not the only one mission of life…. have a loving day! I told him i didnt want to celebrate valentine’s day cause i dont believe in the commercialisation of that day. Didnt want him to spend so much money on a day which is celebrated by so many. I rather spend it on days that are special to us like our 2nd year Anni in a months time.

Watch movies the whole day and had a feast last night at chomps which was packed with people. We had prawn mee, carrot cake, stingray, chicken wings and a big ass cup of sugar cane. Shiokness.
