Hey guys!

[While I was at it, I figured I'd post my American Idol experience, because it's these types of experiences that shape you into who you are going to become, as a person and a singer. It was very inspirational to me. And you all know how much I value inspiration!]

So this funny thing happened the other night when I was at the computer, on YouTube.com, and I just happened to see an ad for a competition called “YouTube Caroling!” It looked cool and I decided to go ahead and make a video to send in to the contest. The contest is sponsored by TJ Maxx and Marshall’s and you could choose between four different songs to sing. Two of the songs were modifications of traditional Christmas carols: “Deck Yourself Out,” from “Deck the Halls,” and “We Wish You a Better Way to Christmas Shop,” from “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

These songs are called the “Spendervention” carols! I like them! Anyone who sends in a video singing one of the Spendervention carols could win the grand prize of a $5,000 shopping spree to TJ Maxx and Marshall’s. Yes, please!

We’ll see what happens! All I know is, as of tonight (Saturday, December 5, 2009,) I have 176 views on YouTube and it got on the web just yesterday afternoon! One thing that was cool, that I noticed just a few minutes ago, was that if you type in the name of the contest on Google: “YouTube Caroling,” my video appears under the first Search Result!? Who knows what will happen, but I hope this is a sign of good things to come!

I have a thing or two to say about Facebook:

Once you get on, it’s absolutely ADDICTING.

I just came back from my daily dose of HappySlip and KevJumba (both of which are awesome, and you should totally check them out), but all the while I was there, I had Facebook on the other tab, and every few seconds, I would be checking to see who decided to put that little red number on the notifications button, and by the time I had finished giggling over whatever was one there, and commenting, and liking, the video was already over.

I went through that process for another hour or so, before finally getting off Youtube and realizing that I had a project to do which consisted of using the computer. So, maybe for thirty minutes, I was about a quarter done with my work when, the internet icon winked at me.

No, seriously. It WINKED.

I first thought it was a hallucination, before trying to ignore it. Then came my immediate response:

“WTF?”

Needless to say, I was freaked.

But I decided to take it as a sign. I went online. Minutes later, I was transfixed with the beauty of Facebook. Then, I went to my profile, where I had posted an update of this blog, and remembered I had to make a new post.

So here I am, project still not done.

Wait. Oh damn. Now that’s blinking too.

Even though they are goofing off and just hanging out you gotta love how all these talented like minded individuals across different mediums have gathered in one room just to chill and hangout. HappySlip posted up this clip of a whole rack of people chilling in Victor Kim’s house.

We need more of this in the community. All you talented fools, go and be friends! HAHA

October 14, 2009 – Seattle, WA. Christine Gambito, better known as “HappySlip” will be performing her one woman comedy show “HappySlip LIVE” for the first time in Seattle on October 30th at University of Washington Kane Hall. Gambito is an internationally recognized Filipino-American YouTube personality, actress, and comedian and Philippine Tourism ambassador. She maintains one of the most-subscribed-to channels on YouTube and named second Best Comedy at the 2006 YouTube video awards. Massive Monkees, recently back from MTVs America’s Best Dance Crew will also give a performance. Proceeds will go towards Seattle youth programs at the Filipino Community Center and the Northwest Filipino American Student Alliance.  Cash donations and medical supplies will be accepted for typhoon relief operations in the Philippines.

This fundraiser is a large step in expanding Filipino youth programming.  This expansion of services include: workforce readiness programs, life skills training, cultural enrichment programs, college exploration and mentorship, leadership training, case management services, gang prevention and family support services to be housed in the newly renovated Filipino Community Center.  The youth program seeks to be a safe and inclusive environment supporting holistic academic, personal, and cultural growth. 

“The Filipino youth programs helped me and supported me through my academics,” said Jhenalyn Rapanan.  “Teachers like Mr. Rigor and my tutors helped me pass my WASL and get me into the University of Washington. Now they are supporting me in every decision that I make and leading me in the right direction. [It] is really good for high school students especially those who have big dreams like I do.”

Well this past week was amazing. I celebrated my Birthday and had such a great time. To be honest Im exhausted this morning, but I suddenly remembered that this is Monday. A new beginning. So today I wanted to leave you with another Happyslip video. Hopefully you will slip into happiness on this Monday.

That’s roughly a poster/flier every other day. I made the following posters/fliers in a span of 17 days, starting on September 21st to today, October 8th. The Filipino Community of Seattle’s (FCS) Youth Program – FilSTAR is holding their 1st Ever Dinner & Auction on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at the Filipino Community Center (5740 MLK Jr. Way) from 5:30-9:00 pm. The night features an elegant dinner catered by Chef Gerold Castro of Kawali Grill, exciting performers and entertainment, and keynote speaker Christine “HappySlip” Gambito, an internationally recognized Fil-Am YouTube comedian and Philippine Tourism ambassador. The fundraiser also includes a silent & live auction with items including vacation packages! The dinner & auction will help FilSTAR provide much needed services for the youth.

FilSTAR was created by the FCS, with the assistance of Filipino American Educators of Washington (FAEW) to address the failure rates of Filipino youth with standardized testing and has successfully provided services for over 250 youth since 2005. As of today, FilSTAR offers academic support, mentorship, and college prep to students who come from first generation immigrants, and low-income families. We are ready to expand our services!

Half a year since I posted? My how time flies and my how things change. I’ve been working at my school over the summer, redesigning the Student Leadership marketing material. Fun stuff. And just so you have something to look at, I am in the working stages of finalizing a HappySlip Live! event poster/flier this week! Stay tuned for details, Seattle.

these are only two of the videos i watched during thsoe days that i dont have anything to do. oh. of course there’s always something school-related stuff to do. but being the very procrastinator that i am, i refuse to do more important things and indulge myself in what i like doing the most: playing games in facebook and watching videos in Youtube.

and these past few weeks, i found myself actually enjoying watching vlogs especially of the two above, HappySlip and the newest on my list of crushes, Kevjumba. i love watching their vlogs because they’re both witty and funny.

this is what i like about vlogs and blogs (and social media in general). we all have the chance to voice out our opinions, and share our insights and experiences, no matter how profound or shallow the topic is. now, thanks to social media, there is a new avenue for us to share a part of our lives that we want other people to know or to acknowledge (or just to let other  people know that we exist).

oh well, so much for my sabaw post. to end this, i’ll pretend that i was tagged by my crush Kevjumba and share 5 facts about me:

1. i love pigs. i have lots of stuffed pigs (?) in my room (none of them of which i actually bought), all are given by other people. Yay! i think pigs are cute and huggable and intelligent, and they’re PINK, ’nuff said. i have one that i hug everytime i would sleep (and im having a hard time sleeping without it). I even have one in my I.D. holder. a lot of people already told me that it is so dirty that i should remove and have it washed. And then i’d always answer them, “ganyan talaga yan, madudumi naman kaya talaga ang mga baboy!”. grr.

2. i am a very poor story teller. i think all of my friends can attest to this. i stutter and clutter and at times,  i can easily forget what i am talking about (ano nga ba yung kinukwento ko?). i actually envy people who can tel their stories through their blogs and vlogs because, unlike them, im always having a hard time expressing my thoughts and telling my stories. i may have a speech defect or something.

3. i love cherry-flavored ice cream. i dont want it just on top of my ice cream. i actually craved for it for two weeks. thank God for BTIC and Volare Gelato, i can have it any day (as long as i am in Manila).

4. i’m fond of reading greeting cards in bookstores. when i’m alone at a mall and want to kill time, i’d go to the bookstore and just read greeting cards. i dont want Hallmark cards though. i prefer humorous ones.

5. i was suspended for 1 week when i was in high school. err.

Yes yes, this is loooong overdue. I’ve been thinking of blogging about HappySlip. And now here I am blogging about her just now.

Anyway, I just adooore Christine A.K.A HappySlip mainly because she’s so talented and can do just about anything. Plus she can reeeally reeally and I mean reaaally make me laugh. If y’all don’t know her and haven’t seen her vids then it’s a shame on you guys. :p

She’s a Fil-Am gal who grew up somewhere in california( I just I assumed this one.. I know bad research. :p ) and been striving to become an actress doing stageplays and auditioning for commercials. After much disappointment, she just decided to do her own thing and realizing she’s better off on her own. Which was a good decision because she IS better off doing her own thing and so HappySlip was born flooding the Youtube streaming and making the viewers laugh their heart out. She’s just so outstanding and again as I’ve said before, very talented. Oh did I mention she’s filipino? She does make us proud, doesn’t she?

INTERNET. My brother and I planned to dispose our smartbro and now we are using the innovative SUN Broadband Wireless. It’s very user friendly and the quality of service it gives is 10 times more beautiful than that of SMART’s.

AMERICAN IDOL. Admittedly, I wasn’t able to watch all the episodes of AI8 because of my work schedule unlike last year’s. But I managed to watch the finale on Thursday. I actually saw Adam Lambert on his audition and he made a really great impression on me but Kris Allen, no (coz I didn’t know him until on Thursday hehe).  Vocally, Adam Lambert has an edge over Kris Allen but when I heard the latter sang NO BOUNDARIES I felt the sudden jolt of emotions in my heart. His voice can touch those people who are dreaming big to become big people. Congratulations Kris.

YOUTUBE. This website is very controversial in our office because of me and bok hehe. I have tons of favorite videos in this site especially the videos of THE Nigahiga, THE Kevjumba, and THE HappySlip. R.C. introduced me to them. She also let me hear the song SAVE ME by Josh Verdes and I must say that it’s one of the most serious love songs I’ve ever heard. It’s simple yet so serious.

Mother’s Day falls on this Sunday so what are your plans for your Mom? For us we will still be in church camp at Rainforest over the weekend. I wonder whether the organizing committee will surprise all the mothers with something special? Well… we shall see, .

Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao the world’s number 1 pound-for-pound boxer. Okay, so he’s every Filipino’s personal hero. Like the whole Philippines stops when Manny is on a fight-like the whole country literally stops- zero crimes committed, people just tune in to the television to watch his fight. It’s like a national holiday.

Well, last Saturday (May 2nd), he fought against British boxer Ricky “Hit Man” Hatton and The Pac Man knocked out Hatton in the second round! After two knock downs of Hatton on the first round, The Hit Man finally gave up on the second round. Martin Nievera, the Filipino singer who sang the Philippines’ national anthem said after being asked about the fight “I felt like I spent more time in the ring than Manny did…”

Unfortunately, the video of the short fight in Youtube had to be put down because of copyright issues. But here’s what Happyslip’s, my favorite Youtuber, vlog about the fight. I have to say that almost every Filipino around the world does this when watching the fight.

First of all, be ready to spend lots of time perfecting angles and looking presentable in front of a web-cam or digi-corder. If you have personality, are funny, hot, or special, you can definitely become the next Fred or Nigahiga, What the Buck, Happyslip, Kevjumba, etc online. But you better hop the gravy train now. As evident from the change in popularity of different personalities, you can see you’d be a passing fad. Soon, Youtube, Hulu, etc… can replace Television in general and everyone’s gonna have a fan following. Which is kind of scary– you have actors/actresses who land a small role on TV after years of studying drama and hard work, only to be less famous than teens who rant or have funny voices. Hmmm….
