Around 3pm as he made his way there, a cream Corrola drew up alongside him. Three women jumped out, pushed him into the car and drove to the Roman Catholic Cathedral along Fourth St where they locked him in a room.

At 8pm one of the women returned and forced him to have sex with her (she must have been hellava ugly if she needed to force him !!!)

The next morning, the 3 women bundled him into their car again then dumped him at the Machipisa Shopping Centre.

Police are now looking for the women (as are several hundred young men !!!)

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” ~ Dr. Seuss

It might seem so difficult and i may sound so careless ,but after i asked my brother the same question i could not answer myself,i realised that,in life ,there are somethings we are forced to overlook due to circumstances.Being the african child as i am,i have missed so much in life not by choice or design but by virtue of being me!However i do not regret, neither do i loath those who seem to be born advantaged, for i tell myself that my happiness is of paramount importance that worrying about what i never had or what i might have missed.

I know i am five days into my 27th birthday, but what strikes me most is the embarrasing fact that i dont know my mothers birthday.Neither can i lie that we have ever had a birthday party for any of my brothers or siblings.A birthday has been something we worry less about, but is it not supposed to be a celebration of life,of progression ,and evn of achievement!Forcing yourself into this cruel world, managing to come out of that heavenly womb after 9 months, being the baby that cries so loud in the hood, the first year ,second……….fourth…….you count them.

Those years i scavenged. The years o could have had turned into a criminal. The years when i had no rights,no health care ,nameless ,faceless and voiceless. Not in one of them did i celebrate my birthday.I never even bothered to think of it,for it was just another day for me!A day with less possibilities ,a day pregnant with uncertainities. But as i neared my late teens,i had time when i would notice it through isolated birthday cards from my high school sweetheart! And there are those birthdays ,when i was here in South Africa……memories!

I have so much in my thoughts, but what makes me happy is not the cake or having my close friends drinking, dancing and singing.I love seeing children dance, sing ,run and giggle. It compensates for the time i lost,it compansates for my lost childhood.I am so happy that i have had the strength to proceed, the strength to forgive and the strength to share my story, with the belief and hope of inspiring others.I can also thank myself for being bold enough that i told myself that my past is not an excuse,i had no reason to keep the bad memories for they say…..

“There is no revenge so complete as forgiveness. ” ~ Josh Billings

I might not be what other people want me to be,i may not have all that i wish to be,but i have embraced a treasure………HAPPINESS ,and my happiness comes through compassion .I have a weakness ,a weakness and a never ending will to make a difference.I wake up with a mission,i get to sleep with a mission. My mission is not to change the world, but to change myself so that i understand the world better. And with my birthday just around the corner,i have a wish ,i might not live it but the WISH is still in me.I know i have my friends,i have those who feel the way i feel for the less advantaged. If we all could, just for one day,buy a small present and give to the next person. It does not matter you know the person or not, what matters is you have given with your heart.

I could paint the skies with love,i could run miles with love ,i could blow a baloon that would drop more baloons with love and compassion but all that would not have an impact unless the compassion or love reached its destination. So today i say,Thank you all my friends for being my friends.Without you i would not be this strong.

I HAVE NEVER CELEBRATED MY BIRTHDAY……………….!!!!!!!!!!

Red dust kicks up from the ground, highlighting the stark beauty of beiges and browns in the fields and the leafless trees. The rains won’t begin for at least another month – you can taste the dust coating your throat. A group of men are singing in jubilation and stomping the dust with vigour…

They keep the beat with their hands alone; there are no drums in sight. The tiny village of Hurungwe has little to offer – tattered clothing, bare feet, and hungry bellies are in abundance – but today their spirits are full because today their Bishop is visiting with a Mission Team from the United States and Canada.

Today, the foundation stone of their new church will be put into place; it will go under where the altar will be built. Emotions are high for everyone. The Team members assist in the service and watch their names being lowered into the foundation with the founders of this African church. As they clap and dance along to the song s of the Shona women, they know that a part of them will remain in Africa forever.

The first OCMC Mission Team to Zimbabwe experienced many unforgettable events like this as we travelled alongside His Eminence Metropolitan George of Zimbabwe. We participated in what is already happening throughout the country and experienced a reciprocal blessing between the team members and the local church (comprised of the Greek, Shona, and Ndebele people groups). Our brothers and sisters in Christ showed us love and taught us about hospitality.

They are hungry for instruction about the Orthodox Church and way of life. We found much joy during the teaching times as we shared from our own knowledge and experience and tried to answer their many questions. They also bared their souls to us by asking very personal questions before and after sessions, as well as during the gender and age-specific sessions. After two weeks of clinging to us like Velcro, a few small children will now be wondering, “Where did the white women go?”

There is so much hunger in Zimbabwe. The people are hungry for food and other supplies. Only a year ago, grocery store shelves were empty, and there was no petrol. Banks were restricting how much a person could withdraw each day; even if you had money in the bank, you could not access it when you needed it. The inflation had gone out of control. One US dollar equalled 13 trillion Zim Dollars. At the beginning of 2009, Zim dollars ceased to be used, and the country currently operates on US dollars and South African rands.

Today, things have improved dramatically. Bread is available in the cities. Petrol is available at most stations (but make sure to read the chalk boards which announce “petrol – yes, diesel – yes” if you want to be sure). Knick-knacks are available at the markets. As visitors, we had plenty to eat. However, there are still shortages. In Harare, a city of 6 million people, there has been no public water source for a year and a half (early 2008). Each building or residence has to pump water from the water table. Power cuts occur without warning, thereby affecting everything (including traffic signals and the water pumps). One night, the Metropolis was without electricity and water from 6:30pm until 9:00am the next morning. This has become a frustrating part of their lives. Despite this, the people are joyful. They know how much the situation has improved. They are survivors.

The villages are still struggling. They do not receive many of the food items and school supplies that are now available in the cities. In Chitate, a hamlet outside of the village of Mrehwa, a group of women have formed a peanut butter making co-operative. They grow the peanuts, harvest them, shell them, clean them, and grind them into peanut butter. They sell their organic product (chunky or creamy!) in the village. These women are hard-working and determined to help provide for their families.

The Team was blessed to spend time with the villagers in order to witness the peanut butter project and the spirit of the people. What love and what joy! When we arrived, the women were singing, dancing, and clapping in procession to meet us. We had never met them before, but each woman embraced every team member with such excitement, energy, and length that it appeared as though they were greeting relatives whom they had not seen for a very long time. They honoured us like dignitaries and happily showed off the village. We were also able to try grinding the peanuts and tasting the result. It tasted just like the organic peanut butter I buy at home! The women cooked a traditional Zimbabwean meal for us, including meat (something that is always rare in villages). We blessed them with food, toys, school supplies, and candy which had been sent in crates from Greece. His Eminence also blessed them by buying the entire stock of peanut butter (which he then distributed as gifts) . The entire village was blessed that day…and so were we.

The communities are also lacking in school and church supplies. We received many requests for supplies. Money is also needed to carry out the work of the Church. Another project of the Metropolis is the School Fee Program. All children must pay school fees to go to school (for both public and private schools). Most parents cannot afford to pay the public school fees.

At the end of the day, it was hard to leave because of the relationships we had started to form. We connected with brothers and sisters in Christ of all colours, genders, and ages in various ways. As we shared our stories and the people shared theirs, we realized how much we have in common even when our day-to-day lives are so different. It was hard to say goodbye to our remarkable brothers and sisters in Christ after so short a time. But we know that they will be praying for us, our churches, and the next Team that will come to serve them. Already, I am wondering whether I will be a part of that Team. When God asks, “Who shall I send to Zimbabwe?” Will you answer, “Here I am, Lord. Send me.”?

The economist reports…

“On one occasion, 15 armed invaders, banging on metal objects and chanting war songs, forced their way into Mr Freeth’s house, threatening to burn it to the ground, kill the two men present, rape the women and eat the three children asleep in their beds. Thanks to an earlier beating, Mr Freeth, an emaciated, soft-spoken man of 40, has never recovered his sense of smell. Mr Campbell, 76, was so badly thrashed that his memory is impaired.”

I had absolutely no idea that Zims were into eating little children. But then again it could just be a case of some air-head Economist reporter (and his/her editors) clinging to the notion of cannibalistic Africans irrationally inclined to commit rape and murder. May they soon realize that the world has moved on.

And dwelling on the issue of white farmers in Zimbabwe, I think it might be time for everyone to look at the facts and accept the truth for what it is. It is true that Robert Mugabe and his marauding thugs have committed economic and other crimes by dispossessing thousands of white Zimbabwean farmers of their land. But it is also true that a tiny section of Zimbabweans who happen to be white own(ed) a disproportionate percentage of the arable land in the country. Add into this imbalance the fact that the land may have been acquired through questionable means a few decades back by the ancestors of these farmers and you have yourself an explosive situation.

It is no wonder that even Morgan Tsvangirai (the reformist Premier of Zim) is, according to the Economist, “blowing hot and cold” on the issue. He knows that he cannot, with a clear conscience, defend the system of land ownership that exists in Zimbabwe.

I am in no way supporting violent seizure of land in Zimbabwe. All I am saying is that there is a case for radical land reform in the country. And this is not a question of race and/or ethnicity. I have seen the same tensions in Kenya – where squatters have clashed with fellow Kenyan ( indigenous) owners of large tracts of land. I am totally against illegal redistribution of land. But at the same time I cannot defend an obviously unjust system of land ownership.

It is sad that Mugabe’s illegal (and at times murderous) repossession of land in the country has overshadowed the real land problem in Zimbabwe – to the extent that even a somewhat respected newspaper like the Economist feels no shame in allowing a subliminally racist line like the one quoted above in its pages.

It’s a large room with walls in puce green. The ceiling is high, close to the angle of the roof and

It’s a large room with walls in puce green. The ceiling is high, close to the angle of the roof and the skylights on the west side have been whitewashed over to reduce the heat of summer. Two lines of grime mark the waiting area; one for bored, unwashed heads and the other for elbows slouched over the back of benches no longer there.

Gun licences are a requirement in Zimbabwe and this is one sector of the government that works, at least in outward appearances. I am waiting to collect my licences for a pistol and a shotgun ancien (it’s over 100 years old). For obscure reasons both have to be kept at the office where they are pretty much useless but they are probably not easily sold. I have been waiting for some 15 minutes now whilst my request is “being attended to” and I’m as bored as the two young girls opposite who are starting a slapping contest. The bigger takes off her jersey to allow better freedom of movement but that’s as far as it gets. The policewoman, large and stern with glasses, reprimands them and the younger of the two hides behind her sister with a nervous giggle.

The walls are devoid of decoration save for an ILO poster and a few notices of “Cigarettes are permitted in this office but smoking is not”. Opposite me are two small but tacky photos of big game hunters with their kill. One, in sunglasses is holding a dead leopard in an obscene, almost loving embrace under the forelegs. Its hind legs are just touching the ground and its bloody muzzle is resting on his shoulder. Once a magnificent animal it is now relegated to the Firearms Registry wall where it certainly was three years ago when I last renewed my licences. The other is a grotesque photo of a hunter crouching next to a pickup truck sized hippo – I cannot see any evidence of blood and have no desire to look closer. How difficult is it to shoot a hippo? And he was proud of it?

Outside the winds of September are blowing. It’s going to be a warm day too (nights are still jumper-cool) but the heat of October is only a threat – it will come, never fear; soporific, stultifying heat. Cicadas trilling. Every step will be an effort, a sweaty move in the parturition of the rainy season, if it comes. This is an el Niῆo year when the ever fickle rainy season chooses to be more fickle than usual – though it is likely to be dry, very dry. That is then, but for now the winds blow and the dust swirls and even the sun is cowed in the resulting haze. The matriarchal policewoman finishes stacking files (no computers here) and wipes the patina of dust off the tables behind the counter with a well polished rag. The dust will be back.

Squads of recruits jog (never walk!) past outside, neat in navy blue uniforms. Across the road is a sign Forensic Laboratory; the door is open but it looks deserted. Do they solve crimes inside? Is CSI alive and well in the Harare CID? The wind blows and I wait.

I try playing the Sudoku on my cell phone but I am really not interested. I adjust the font size on the contact list to large and then back to standard. I wait some more. Eventually I am called to the counter. A signature, a date and I am legitimized. It seems that in the two months since I have applied for the licences nothing has happened until I handed over the receipt some 45 minutes earlier. No matter, the woman is pleasant and I have what I came for.

A kloppity mounted squad of recruits goes past as I walk out the gate to the car. The horses at least seem proud and well cared for. Outside the gate it is dust as usual.

I drive a few blocks down to the Delta Art Gallery to have a look at a new exhibition. Back alleys are laden with trash that the council has not even pretended to collect. They charge extortionist rates for no visible return. Trash lines the gutters and is piled on the edge of a dusty square of grass where security company recruits in a motley collection of clothes drill and stamp their feet totally out of turn. A fire has burnt part of the square and rubbish has been dumped on the burnt area. Or was it the other way around? There was a fire burning around a couple of skips at a private school on the way into town. A bit of “impromptu” refuse disposal perhaps?

September is not a pretty month in Harare. Trees are still bare after winter and the blooms of the jacaranda and other summer trees have not started. The Gallery Delta at least is cool and clean though the pieces by the well known local artist are optimistically priced.

Driving back out of town the recruits are still drilling aimlessly on the dusty square and a fire engine has moved in to put out the blaze at the school rubbish skips. Town gets a bit cleaner to the more affluent north where the residents are more inclined and able to pay private refuse collectors to remove their rubbish but Harare, once voted the cleanest capital city in the world (1980’s) is now just a dim shadow of its former trim self.

MUCH HAS been said about the resilience of Zimbabweans. And rightly so. But, one area that has not received much attention is the resilience in sport. Today, we bring you selected pictures from the Borrowdale Race Course, a place where the life of horse-racing in Zimbabwe has gone one, seemingly unperturbed by the crisis in Zimbabwe.

Enjoy these pictures as much as we did.
