7. Invisible Factories (Genetically Modified); The Three Sons

“Togktamish, a rich Tartar, who had three sons by his sole wife Turkan-Katan, consigned to the Cadi, (a local judge) on the eve of his death, a sealed will, in which he declared to be the heir of all his property whoever of his children should prove best that he was son of Togktamish, and of their mother, who was still living. The Cadi knew not on what to resolve in this perplexed affair, and he proposed to leave it to the judgment of the Sultan Togrul. The latter was about to set out for the chase; he therefore ordered the disputants to bring without delay their father’s mummy.

He caused it to be set up at a certain distance, and then presented his bow to the eldest son, saying:

“He among you who shall, with this arrow, hit exactly the heart of the deceased, shall be recognized as son and heir of Togktamish, for it is impossible to remove the difficulty in any other manner.”

The eldest son took aim, and his arrow struck the breast of his father. The second took the bow and succeeded as well as the first. Then the youngest bent the bow; but, at the moment of taking aim, he let it fall from his hands, began to weep, threw himself at the Sultan’s feet, and said :

“My lord, do not be angry if thy slave refuses to obey thy orders. I remember at this moment the numerous benefits I have received from my father. He loved me so tenderly, he showed me so much kindness; he treated me always with as much affection as if I had been, his only son! How can I be so ungrateful as to wound him after his death?”

The Sultan raised him, kissed him on the forehead, and said:

“Thou hast best proved that thou art the son of the excellent Togktamisch : therefore thou shalt be his only heir. But let the two eldest be sold as slaves; for they have proved by their ingratitude that they are not the true sons of a noble father.”

Jeff continued absent mindedly watching the automatic mixer spin in the bottom of the liquid filled beaker.

The senior fellow that was directing Jeff’s project, used his magnetic pass card to allow himself into the lab.

The buzz of the electronic door lock brought Jeff out of his trance. He had no idea how long he had been thinking about the story of the three sons.

The Director asked Jeff “Are you alright?”

Although he was surprised at The Director’s question he answered “Sure, why do you ask?”

“I saw you on the security camera down in the lobby and you have not moved a muscle in fifteen minutes” answered The Director rather sheepishly. He hated to admit that he was watching Jeff on the closed circuit TV.

Jeff noticed the uncomfortable position that The Director was in so he offered a light hearted escape route by saying “That camera has been watching over our safety for two years – - – and now it has turned on me?”

The two men laughed nervously, both realizing that the tense moment had been blunted.

Jeff felt an urge to tell The Director what he had been thinking about. When he was through relating the story he asked the director “Do you think there is a moral in there? I mean besides the obvious one.”

“No, I don’t see one” replied The Director. “Do you?”

“No, yet there is something within that story that seems to be unanswered” responded Jeff.

“An old and respectable dervish, in one of his pious pilgrimages, passed the night at the house of a poor widow who inhabited the suburbs of Balsora. The eagerness with which the poor woman received him completely gained his affection. He wished to recompense her for her friendship, and, as he was about to leave, he said to her :

‘I see, my dear sister, that you are poor; it will be difficult for you to amass, by your labor, as much as will be needed for the education of your son Abdallah. If you will confide to me the boy, I will bring him up.’

The widow, who for some years had known the dervish for a holy man, consented to this proposal with joy, and delivered, her son, into his charge.”

Jeff sat that night in the lab of Big Pharma wondering;

“Why did my father wait so long to tell me about the upbringing of Abdallah? It would have made more sense if he started the bed time stories at the beginning.”

Jeff then remembered that his father was reading from a book.

Memories of those bed time stories that Jeff had heard as a boy were becoming more recurrent.

“Why are these stories now coming back to me? Why now? Why so many years later?” Jeff asked himself.

However; once more, he put it out of his mind and continued working on his research.

Abdallah continues to speak;

“My head cast down, I was walking, in affliction, on the banks of the Euphrates. The sun was setting behind the mountain-tops, and all living things in nature were filled with delight at the soft splendor which flooded both earth and heaven; I alone was sad.

‘No,’ I exclaimed within myself, ‘there is no Providence that watches over men: they are insects without name, and their wretched life is given up to chance! Are not the wicked happy, while the good languish?’

Thus I spoke. I sat myself beneath a palm-tree, I gazed upon the murmuring waves of the river, and I wept.”

Jeff gives great thought to Abdallah’s anguish and the dream that Abdallah had that night on the Euphrates. Someone called him by the name of “Mirza” and for the rest of the night Abdallah was indeed Mirza.

Jeff also remembers the part of the story where an omen appreared to Mirza.

A beautiful mother was suckling her child by an oasis. The mother fell into a stuper, the child reached for her, accidently touched an asp and was bitten. The child died.

Abdallah, now Mirza, was taken through the heavens to faraway lands. He saw beautiful mountains, streams, flowered valleys and fields of lilies where his niece and her husband were weaving garlands.

The man who was leading Mirza through the dream said;

“It is only in the bosom of eternity that unhappy virtue finds its recompense. Go then, Mirza, go, and respect the decrees of Providence, even when they appear to thee to be unjust.”

Jeff attempted to determine why he continued thinking about Abdallah. Did his childhood bedtime stories have that much influence on him?

He surely could not accept that answer. He was now a grown man doing a grown man’s work at Big Pharma.

“Abdallah, son of Stanif, received from his master Shah-Yahan, Sultan of India, orders to go to the Island of Boriko, to seek there the water of life; whose source, according to an ancient tradition, is to be found in that island. The accomplishment of such a commission was not easy, because nobody knew in what part of the world the island was situated; but as Abdallah could not escape the will of the Sultan, and as he had heart enough to hazard anything, he departed from Agra the next day at early dawn.

Whatever was the courage of our traveler, his adventurous enterprise did not fail to awake in his mind painful ideas. He was on horseback, absorbed in his reflections; he had out-ridden by some hundred paces the caravan.”

Now Jeff is clear as to what happens next. Abdallah meets a young man named Almoraddin. Almoraddin tells him of Queen Zalikah who allows one to enter the port of her Queendom only on one condition. That condition being that the queen gives the man who wants to enter a ring. If he still has the ring the next morning he is allowed to marry the queen; if not he is banished without his treasure or his ship.

Jeff also knew that this magic ring could bring both happiness and sadness to its holder.

Likewise Abdallah had learned how to ingratiate himself with those from the palace. Secrets were learned and a path forward was pursued.

Jeff wondered; is the Magic Ring a metaphor for “education?”

Almoraddin had found the secret of the ring, married the Queen but then needed Abdallah to renounce his loyalty to the Sultan. “No,” says Abdallah, “I have vowed fidelity to the Sultan, my master.”

Jeff realizes that his journey has ended even though his pursuit of fame has not.

He decides to do his research and continue his loyalty to Big Pharma.

“On the last day of the month of Ramadan, in the sixth year of the reign of the Sheik Yahan, Father of the Faithful, a short time before the hour of the second prayer, Ogluf-Khan, chief of the royal guard, entered my chamber, and said :

‘Abdallah, may the order I bring thee be for thy good! Give me thy sabre, and follow me to the Sultan: it is he who sends me.’

I prostrated myself, and having made a brief prayer;

‘Ogluf-Khan,’ I replied, ‘put thy hand upon my head : the Sultan is master of my life; I am his slave.’

I surrendered him my sabre. He preceded me, and I followed.”

Jeff realized that Abdallah had made a horrible error.

The Sultan then said “Present thy neck for thou are going to make a long journey.”

Abdallah made his prayers to the prophet and replied “The journey is long and without return” and with that presented his neck to the Sultan.

It was then that Jeff realized that a return trip must always be planned for; “no one way tickets for me” said Jeff to himself.

The next eight years were a journey into Jeff’s future; BS, MS and Phd. topped off with a nice internship within Big Pharma.

The full moon, rising from behind a mountain in the background, threw its soft effulgence over part of the scene and over the figures of the fairies, and sparkled in the upspringing water of the fountain, while deep shadow gave mystery and solemn grandeur to all the rest. Over the King’s head a will-with-the-wisp, becoming constant for the time, had settled in something like the form of a star, and gave his light to make more evident to the King the charms of his companion.”

Jeff was startled to realize that while he gazed at his luscious high school lab partner, who was sitting next to him, the words of Oberon and Titania were playing in his mind.

He quickly cleared his head of wanton thoughts and concentrated on the work at hand.

Jeff was beginning to realize his destiny; even though he could not see it clearly. It was a misty horizon, one that beckoned without clarity.

The first step on his journey to destiny had begun.

Jeff was hardly three years old when his father had already decided.

Decided what?; you may ask.

Decided that Jeff was either a genius, a precocious child – - – or possibly somewhere in between.

It was not a good decision.

Jeff’s toys were a chemistry book full of diagrams; various atoms, molecules and compounds as you can well imagine. Bars, hexagons, rods, spheres, squares – - – all joined together in a variety of juxtapositions.

His night-time bed stories were those regarding the alchemists of Arabia; always mixing and matching a complexity of liquefied metals. The mysteries of interstitial atoms, latticed frameworks and the never-ending heat treatments; these are what helped Jeff drift off to slumber land.

Oh! You demand an example?

“An Arabian scimitar maker forced his slave to carry a heavy bundle of wood into the desert. A fire was started and the recently hammered scimitar was placed in the hot coals. When the sun rose over the sand dunes the scimitar maker ensured that the red hot scimitar was the same color as the newborn sun. When he was satisfied that it was – - – he plunged it into the slave. This process hardened the steel blade. The scimitar maker then polished the sword and held it over the flames until it was the color of the sand. Again, once satisfied, he plunged it into the dead body of the slave. This process tempered the steel so it would not be brittle.”

Jeff did not sleep well on the nights those Arabian tales were told.

Oh yes, every once in a while his father read him milder stories from “The Magic Ring.”

But this story is not about Arabian tales, it is about chemistry.

By the time Jeff was in high school he was deemed a prodigy. Not necessarily because of his brainpower. It was more likely due to having a million dollar technical education stuffed through his ears – - – nickel by nickel.

And therein laid the problem; education without experience.

I also have a juice recipe that will help in obtaining the necessary nutrients to combat high blood pressure:

4 small to medium beets
2 Fuji apples
1 bunch of red or black grapes

Place the above ingredients in a mixture (start with an apple, then a beet, then a few grapes, and so on until all have been juiced). Drink right after and save the rest in an airtight jar in the fridge.

For soldiers, leaving home and entering a world far different from civilian life, change would come rapidly and without mercy. Soldiers went through a psychological evolution from civilian to volunteer to soldier as they coped with the challenges of war, each step changing them more and taking them further from their civilian lives. This process included suppressing pre-war identities and creating new ones, identities based on professionalism and a certain amount of callousness in order to survive the war. The gateway to this process was what historian Gerald Linderman called a “simmering down” that manifested itself in several forms.

As volunteers entered into the service, they discarded unnecessary equipment and non-essential items to make their gear as light as possible on the long marches. In addition, the first casualties of most regiments were from disease, a “simmering down” process that thinned out the ranks. Initially, soldiers welcomed this process for they saw it as ridding the army of the weak and the cowards: New Yorker George Newcomb noted in 1862, “Eney [sic] new Regt has to go through the culling process before it will become a good and efficient Regt.” As the process continued, however, and even the bravest men died, soldiers felt their own vulnerability.

In addition, these men faced what Eric Dean called “a destroying manner of living.” Soldiers primarily marched from place to place, sometimes ten or more miles a day, with few or no breaks, often for many days in a row. Impending battle created the necessity for forced marches, with increased length and speed and no room for exhaustion. The elements were another factor as soldiers were often exposed to the weather without enough protection while on the march or being transported, in camp, and in battle. Clothing and tents were sometimes in short supply or bad condition, and at times fires were forbidden for fear the enemy would spot them, depriving soldiers of warmth and hot food. The presence of a fire did not necessarily mean comfort, however, as evidenced by a October 1862 diary entry by Cyrus F. Boyd who complained, “Had no blankets with us and we suffered much last night in the cold rain[.] We could not sleep and had to stand up about all night around a little fire which we tried to keep alive.” Charles Wright Wills also complained of the soaking rain and the cold turning his fingers blue, but the consolation was that it stopped the chiggers from biting. Conditions in camp led to uncleanliness and insect infestations, a humiliation for men accustomed to better circumstances. In addition to the chiggers, the “ants also have an affinity for human flesh and are continually reconnoitering us,” wrote Wills, “I kill about 200,000 per day. Also, knock some 600 worms off of me . . . I pick enough etomological specimens off me every day to start a museum.” These conditions facilitated the spread and ravages of disease.

Men adapted to their changed lives at different rates, some defining themselves as soldiers quickly, others becoming frightened by the changes they saw in themselves. Men transgressed against their normal behavior and the wishes of family members as the dull experiences of camp life and long winter encampments led some to try many of the vices and entertainments they had staunchly opposed at the beginning of the war. In battle, soldiers welcomed the hardening that allowed them to withstand horrific experiences, but there came a point when they no longer seemed to care about human life. “We passed around, among the dead bodies and wounded soldiers,” said Henry C. Lyon of the 34^th New York, “apparently no more affected than would we be if we saw a number of Dead Beavers.” When writing about artillery fire, O.W. Norton was glad there were no women around for “[e]very time a shell exploded they would jump and think ‘there goes death and misery to some poor fellow.’” He and his fellow soldiers no longer thought that way for “we have grown so careless and hardened that we don’t heed them.” Death was ever-present in the lives of Civil War soldiers and they became indifferent to it, sometimes to the point at which they could function normally, joke, and enjoy pranks in battle or even live among the dead on the battlefield. “The scenes of blood and strife that I have been called to pass through during the months that are passed, and my ‘baptism in blood,’” admitted infantryman Warren Freeman, “have nearly destroyed all the finer feelings of my nature.”
