En mi experiencia lo largo de estos meses, me he dado cuenta de que las mejores computadoras para instalar ubuntu son las Dell (no porque yo tenga una) la verdad son las que menos problemas dan con los drivers, una vez instalado ya está todo funcionando etc. etc.

He probado con diversas marcas (he instalado muchos ubuntus en muchas compus) Acer, Hp, Gateway, Compaq y siempre pasa algo, como he dicho en otras ocasiones, las más rebeldes son las hp, desconozco la razón, yo sé que es una buena marca pero siempre pasa algo con ellas (no reconoce tarjeta de sonido o la tarjeta de red, la resolución de pantalla es menor, etc.) Al final casi todos los problemas se resuelven y todo queda en orden, pero como les digo, las que menos problemas dan son las Dell.

El caso de todo este post, es que en últimos días he decidido comprarme una netbook, mi laptop es muy pesada y casi siempre la llevo a la Fac. una netbook en verdad es necesaria para mí, ya que sólo la necesito para lo básico. Obviamente después de la explicación anterior he estado buscando una Dell, particularmente la Dell mini 10, tampoco es que me la he pasado buscando pero ya encontré varias opciones que van desde los $4,800 en Tienda Telmex, hasta los $5,299 de la página de Dell o incluso los casi $6,000 que vale en la plaza de la computación.

El caso es que hoy por un link que no se donde demonios encontré, llegué nuevamente a la página de Dell y me encontré con esto:

Si quieren ir a la página sólo den click en la imagen, esto no es nada sorprendente, hace mucho, me enteré de la alianza que hizo Dell con Canonical para ofrecer computadoras con Ubuntu, sin embargo si uno busca por la página de Dell, jamás encuentra esta opción, como les dije tampoco es que me la pase buscando, pero cuando entré a la página de Dell para ver cuánto costaba su Mini 10, a la hora de Configurar y Cotizar el equipo, en la opción de seleccionar su Sistema Operativo sólo hay de dos (o de una en algunos casos): Windows XP o Windows 7, así que llegar a este link en verdad debe ser complicado, ahora otra cosa que me molesta un poco es que la mini 10 con Win XP cuesta $5,299 y con Ubuntu 8.04 (ni siquiera es el Remix que sería el ideal para una netbook) $5,199, digo que me molesta porque todos sabemos cuánto cuesta Ubuntu ($ 0.00) mientras que Win XP (ya con todo y la salida de Win 7) ha de andar por los $1,000. Así que a menos que Win XP ya cueste $100, los de Dell están vendiendo cara esa netbook, pero bueno que le voy a hacer tampoco es para tanto, parece que la mejor opción hasta ahora es en Telmex y tendré que eliminarle el Win XP, por cierto si alguien lo quiere se los vendo jajajajaja.

No he abandonado esta seccion y ahora les presento algo mas completo que solo una aplicacion, sino una distribucion completa.

INX o INX is not X es una distribucion Live CD basada en Ubuntu Hardy Heron, la cual no tiene servidor X, solo consola, pero no se preocupen es igual de facil de manejar que Ubuntu. En el primer booteo nos presenta una serie de opciones donde nos puede llevar al menu de INX, un mini tutorial sobre el uso de GNU Screen, ademas de poder utilizar varios perfiles (algo muy bien logrado). En el menu de las aplicaciones tenemos varias secciones como Web, Mail, IRC, Radio por internet, aplicaciones de oficina y tambien la opcion de una terminal limpia.

Entre las aplicaciones que destacan estan:

• Mutt, para correo, y un script para usar Gmail (mas facil no puede ser)
• Elinks y Links2 (uno a base de texto que ya hablamos y otro con interfaz)
• Mocp, y mplayer para multimedia
• Midnight Commander como explorador de archivos
• Aplicaciones de agenda, hoja de calculo, calendario

La version que probe fue la inestable, que parece que agrega soporte para crear un pendrive booteable, algo de mucha utilidad. La imagen pesa ~200 mb y puede descargarse de aqui.

Como experiencia de usuario es algo nuevo, no es como Arch, pero parece un buen comienzo para aprender a manejar un sistema entero sin interfaz grafica. Punto y aparte es que contiene mucho humor geek, algo que le da un toque especial a esta distribucion. Para imagenes chequen la galeria de abajo.

Vediamo come fare funzionare questa chiavetta con Ubuntu.Questa guida è stata testata su Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04,Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 e Debian Lenny.

Il chipset inserito all’interno di questa chiavetta è un Ralink RT2070,ma ho utilizzato i driver per il chipset RT3070.

Si pressupone che i build e gli headers siano già installati.Se così non fosse  basta digitare:

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-versione del kernel in uso

Se non si conosce la versione del kernel basta digitare:

uname -r

Il risultato sarà simile a questo

Vediamo i passi da eseguire per installare questo adattatore.

• Scaricare i sorgenti dei driver.Per scaricarli clicca qui
• Scompattare il file in una cartella
• Dobbiamo modificare i file config.mk e usb_main_dev.c contenuti all’interno della cartella /os/linux/
• Nel file config.mk , bisogna intercettare le due righe HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=n e HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=n e sostituire “n” con “y”
• Adesso modifichiamo il file usb_main_dev.c .In questo file bisogna intercettare la riga aggiungere questa riga
  

  {USB_DEVICE(0x148F,0x3070)}, /* Ralink 3070 */

  e aggiungere sotto di essa questa

  {USB_DEVICE(0x0DF6,0x003F)}, /* Ralink 2070 */

  ATTENZIONE: Io ho messo 0x0DF6,0x003F perchè il risultato di lsusb mi fornisce questo

  ID 0df6:003f Sitecom Europe B.V.

  Nel caso voi avete un altro id,modificate la riga come riportato dal risultato del vostro lsusb.

• Bene,abbiamo quasi finito.Adesso ci postiamo all’interno della cartella in cui abbiamo scompattato i driver e digitiamo
  

  sudo make

  e quando finisce

  sudo make install

• Ci siamo quasi!Adesso bisogna copiare un file all’interno della cartella /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA.Se questa cartella non è presente createla con

   

  sudo mkdir /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA

  All’interno di questa cartella dobbiamo copiare il file che si trova dentro /etc/Wireless/RT3070STA Quindi

  sudo cp /etc/Wireless/RT3070STA/RT2870STA.dat /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA/RT2870STA.dat

• Adesso dobbiamo caricare il modulo nel kernel.Per caricarlo all’avvio,basta aggiungere la riga rt3070sta nel file /etc/modules. Per fare questo basta digitare:
  

  sudo gedit /etc/modules

  aggiungere la riga rt3070sta.Salvare e riavviare.

Abbiamo finito!

Modem Option HSUPA 431 a.k.a.  Vodafone K3760 merupakan modem HSUPA yang lumayan terjangkau, dengan spesifikasi yang Ok, patut dijadikan pilihan untuk menjelajahi internet.

Pertama modem Option 431 HSUPA ini datang saya mencoba koneksi dengan HSOConnect untuk Option 225, koneksi dapat dilakukan tetapi dalam beberapa waktu membuat mesin Hardy saya hang. Bingung….

Akhirnya setelah beberapa kali ujicoba ketemu cara jitu untuk koneksi dengan Option 431 di Ubuntu Hardy Heron, let’s Rock…… :

SIAPKAN KONEKSI INTERNET

1.  Unduh berkas instalasi di http://www.vodafonebetavine.net/bvportal/resources/datacards/os/ubuntu

2. Ekstrak berkas Ubuntu.tgz, hasil Unduhan diatas.

3. Install seluruh berkas dengan ekstensi .deb  dengan klik dua kali pada berkas atau dengan perintah sudo dpkg -i dari terminal. Urutan dari ozerocdoff_0.4-2_i386.deb, usb-modeswitch_0.9.7_i386.deb, vodafone_mobile-connect_2.10.01-1_all.deb.

4. Setelah semua terinstal dengan baik, Vodafone Mobile Connect dapat diakses dari menu Applications->Internet-> Vodafone Mobile Connect.

5. Pada saat pertama dimuat VMC akan mendeteksi Option 431 sebagai Option K3760

6. Tinggal OK, dan masuk ke Menu VMC, buat profile yang sesuai dengan kartu GSM Anda, dan Siap untuk berselancar di Internet.

Bilindiği üzre Ubuntu bütün versiyonlarında karizma kod adlar kullanır. Gutsy Gibbon, Hardy Heron, Jaunty Jackalope falan. Sonuçta hepsi yakın anlamdadır aslında. Mesela birkaçı gözüpek şebek, cesur balıkçıl, havalı tavşan …vb. Son sürüm 10.04′ün adı ise Lucid Lynx olacakmış. Hastasıyım bu isimlerin. Lucid şeffaf demek, Lynx de vaşak adlı hayvan. Zaten Pardus eski sürümlerinde bu ismi kullanmıştı. Gayet hoş bir isim olmuş.

Bu işletim sistemi diğer X.04 ler gibi LTS olacakmış. LTS ne şimdi diyenler için şöyle bişi: Long term support. Yani işletim sistemine 2 yıl kadar destek veriliyor. Patch, meç falan olayları işte. Mesele şu anda 9.10 çıktı. Bu LTS değil. Bunun desteği 6 ay sürüyor yamulmuyorsam.

Ubuntu 10.04‘ün çıkış tarihi Nisan 2010 olarak belirlenmiş. Bug-free olacakmış işletim sistemi vhoa. Bakalım öyle mi olacak acep. Gerçi önceki versiyonlarda da öyle kocaman açıklar görmedik. Benim hoşuma gitmeyen şey ise yine GNOME 2.0 kullanılacakmış. Usta KDE 4.3 çıkmış sen hala GNOME 2 ile masaüstü yapıyorsun olmuyor ama. Koy GNOME 3.0‘ı çıktı. Eminim daha çok kişi Ubuntu kullanır. Nitekim KDE 4.3 de çok güzel olmuş. Pardus’u tavsiye ederim.

I tend to minimise the instances when I have to change of Linux version on my computer (a Macbook Pro Santa Rosa), for this always is a traumatic event with potential consequences on my work, and therefore I had postponed leaving Kubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) in a typical procrastinating attitude,  i.e. till something stopped working! This happened yesterday with a failed attempt at upgrading R and I thus moved to Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron), using the upgrade option rather than re-installing the whole thing from scratch. The only manual steps were to change xorg.conf to accomodate the touchpad and to install madwif to get access to the wireless—the most frustrating part was finding a valid address! (Upgrading Ubuntu means that each intermediate version needs to be installed before moving to the next.) Now that everything works nicely (including suspend and hibernate, and my earlier heating problem seems to be resolved as well!), I am wondering whether or not I should move to the next version of Kubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex, terrible tee-shirt!) or even to the most recent  Kubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope, terrible name: jaundiced jackal, jovial jabiru, jocular jellyfish, or jittery jaguar would have sounded way better! The next animal in the list of releases is a koala, although karmic would hardly have been my adjective of choice)… As an aside about this future release, an interesting announcement is that Ubuntu 9.10 would support cloud computing.

I will soon be releasing a slightly updated version of XXCE 2.1 – to be named Pidgin 2.1.1 – in the near future. The new version will reflect updated software such as an updated 2.6.24-24 kernel, Pidgin 2.6.1, as well as an updated Facebook Chat plugin (version 1.60) for Pidgin.

In addition, the new version will NOT come with the nVidia driver. I noticed on my XXCE 2.1 install – which includes the nVidia driver – that if I enable the nVidia driver and reboot, my screen resolution is messed up big time and I have to reinstall the OS. However, I have had no problems when I uninstalled the driver then redownloaded it and enabled it (from the Restricted Drivers Manager, of course). So the next release of XXCE 2.1 will not come with the nVidia driver.

In addition, I have noticed that Xine doesn’t work on my system when I have Compiz Fusion enabled, so I plan on removing Xine and replacing it with VLC, including the VLC plugin for Firefox.

I’ve never been comfortable with wrap-ups, really with endings, so this is not my favorite assignment of the course. I also believe that the change the course has wrought is who I am now. So I can’t truly remember my state before the course started. I’ll try.

In May I think I had in mind a rich and arcane mix of secret hands-on techniques, revelation-inducing tricks, and illuminating tips to take data and voilà! And that’s pretty much been the reality. I have loved the course, even if the units hang together in my mind by the most fragile of threads. This is the material I’ve been wanting to cover for a few years now, and I do hope that the program’s remaining coursework revisits, not only adds to, where we’ve been.

I am impressed by how many domains of expertise make up the “simplest” web presentation of digital content. Not all steps along the way are deep, but many complex routines reveal an inner core that in best implementation demand art, not just accurate typing. On the other hand, I should not have been surprised, but I was, at the number of parts of the process that are way up, abstracted from command line, web apps—gosh, at how far we’ve come from machine language! I didn’t know about HTML forms; I didn’t know that Linux would be so familiar and so…complete. I evidently had a pretty warped idea of Linux, speaking of the arcane and machine language. This was probably the biggest revelation of the summer, every single detail about installing, using, updating an actual working instance of Linux. Granted it was exciting to see database query results pop on the screen, but the demystifying of Linux was the deepest change to my reality. It still gives me a thrill to see Hardy Heron and hear the snippet of Hardy Heron theme music.

I’m also less impressed with instances of digital libraries now that I know a little of what it takes (this isn’t the sausage analogy, it’s just that doing it is not beyond the likes of us). But I do have trouble seeing how anyone can be master of it all. I am always curious how professionals keep up with the sheer global volume of the new that exists for every scintilla of IT/digital life; we have been introduced to so many different aspects, each with its standards, forums, official and unofficial documentation, blogs, famous practitioners, lore, and culture. I hope there is time to hang out with Ubuntu just to get a better sense of its nature. We didn’t have time. Dream: build the physically separate practice machine August 19-23.

I am much more appreciative than I was at the beginning that we are learning open source solutions, that DigIn was built this way; it’s a twofer, getting the technology AND the moral high ground (IMHO). Open source is not just a product choice, it’s a piece of a larger social picture that has everything to do with our cultural commons and the means librarians and archivists and museum pros choose to achieve the end of preservation of culture. Various extracurricular talks and news this summer have made me surer that it’s a firmer path; you can always pay money, but with open source you will probably be negotiating, planning, and designing more, and that brings you closer to your product (or process). And it’s community.

The art of crafting the database (the Organization of Knowledge, the holiest of course titles) matters clearly, and maybe some of us are natural artists and some aren’t but will be and some will know better than to try. This was the part of the course I was most invested in as an archivist/special collections librarian. It’s not easy for me, but it’s still compelling. Quest for the elegant.

The only disturbing element of the semester is learning to sit for much longer in front of computers. I can. And that’s not very good.

I am possibly more excited at the end of this course than I was at the beginning. And that’s knowing that all semester I have battled poor memory in remembering where in my three binders for the course that phrase is that tells me how to find Webmin or the syntax for retrieving user permissions info or the libraries of new software for Ubuntu. These are all the threads that are fragile now and will begin to break when not used in the coming weeks, so here’s to using them and weaving some real fabric. I don’t want just to be able to talk to the people who do it all, I still, at the end of the course, want to do. No change in attitude, three binders richer.
