And, you know, the thing about Patrick Stewart, what makes him so infinitely watchable, is the fact that whenever a character of his has a supremely difficult moment, you know that it’s coming from a real place inside of him, and yet it is also very dignified. And I don’t mean “dignified” as in “uptight.” I mean that Patrick Stewart has freaking dignity, man. A single half-smile from Stewart is more profound than an entire lifetime of shenanigans from most of Hollywood. And there are reasons for that, reasons that have to do with his talent, and reasons that, I realize now, must have so much to do with what he lived through. Patrick Stewart, I salute you.

Manaka Junpei sonha em ser diretor de filmes, sua história começa indo para o terraço de sua escola e narrando o evento, mas é interrompido quando uma garota cai sobre ele, assustada, sai correndo. Manaka fica encantado ao ver que ela é muito linda e suas únicas informações são seu nome, Toujou Aya, que ele viu no caderno dela e que estava usando calcinha de morangos (isso mesmo, você não leu errado XD), então decide ir atrás de sua musa.

Manaka Junpei: O protagonista, amante de filmes e está em busca da sua musa, sendo que ela está mais perto do que ele imagina, mas não está convencido que é a Toujou Aya. Seus amigos, Ookusa e Komiyama, ajudam ele a descobrir quem é essa garota.

Toujou Aya: Já até foi chamada de dragão, mas essa não é a palavra pra definí-la, como você mesmo pode ver. Uma das melhores alunas, por sinal, e se apaixona pelo Junpei.

Nishino Tsukasa: No começo, no colégio, é uma das poucas garotas lindas de lá, tanto que dá até pra contar nos dedos. Dá um fora no Komiyama.

Minamito Yui: Amiga de infância do Junpei e era vizinha dele, depois de alguns anos longe dele, ela volta pra escolher qual colégio ela fará o exame de admissão, também conhecido como vestibular.

Satsuki Kitaoji: Mais uma garota que Junpei conhece e acabam ficando na mesma sala, mas antes disso, ele conheceu ela no parque, quando estava estreando sua nova filmadora, mas por causa de uma adversidade, sua filmadora é estragada.

Um anime muito bom e com calcinhas de morangos (isso não vai faltar XD) e isso é apenas um aperitivo do que vem pela frente.

       This episode begins with Keita and his two sisters celebrating at a karaoke parlor, and it just so happens that his sisters have gone to the trouble of making Santa outfits for the occasion.  The reason that the sisters give for the occasion is shake Keita out of his depressed emo mood. After the sisters take a break from singing they try to get Keita to sing.

        After drinking some Oolong tea, Riko asks Keita if the tea tastes strange, then Riko suddenly passes out.  Ako then realizes that this must be the adult Oolong tea, and concludes that Riko must be really bad with alcohol. Ako tells Keita that they might as well just enjoy the tea, and after they’re both nice and toasty Ako tells Keita that she needs to pee. Keita tells her to just hurry up and go, but Ako’s legs won’t work properly. Keita offers to help Ako to the bathroom but she would rather crawl, so she crawls off to the bathroom.

       Just as Ako crawls off to the bathroom Riko finally wakes up and tells K that she also has to go to the bathroom but can’t hold it in. Well, Keita tells her the owners will be mad if she goes inside the room, then Riko and asks Keita if he’ll drink it? Well, Riko settles for asking Keita for an empty plastic bottle. Well, he says it’s impossible so Riko says she’ll just go here, and she says she hasn’t wet her pants since preschool.

     Keita decides it’s better to carry Riko to the bathroom instead of letting her pee her pants, and when Ako sees Keita carrying Riko past her she envies the princess carrying style.

      When Keita finally gets Riko inside the bathroom she plays up her intoxication getting Keita to remove her panties so she can pee, and once they’re off she tells Keita that is thing has gotten big. Keita finally gets her to go and when she’s finished she gets on Keita’s case for staying in the bathroom when he could have left and as punishment she tells him to hurry up and wipe her off.

       Keita starts to get really flustered and confused and she asks him what the problem is since she’s his sister. Riko tells him to remember back to when they were young and he was still pissing his bed and Riko and Ako had to take care of him, so he can return the favor this one time. Keita asks Riko if she’s sure it’s just pee down there and she tells him to hurry up and find out. Just as Keita begins to wipe her off Ako knocks on the door wondering what’s taking so long, breaking Riko’s moment of exaltation.

      As Keita is leaving the bathroom Ako gets a glimpse of the situation and Keita says she has it wrong but one glance at Keita’s pants confirms her worries and Riko says it’s exactly what it looks like.

       Back inside the karaoke booth, Riko’s fallen back asleep with a very nice smile on her face. Well, Keita is bummed out because Ako thinks something happened inside the bathroom so he starts to drinks heavily and Ako apologies to him. Then Keita places Ako on his lap and tells her to share some of her cheerfulness with him by mouth to mouth. After a few seconds thought, Ako thinks it’ll be alright for her to enjoy Keita by herself, and after a few minutes of kissing Keita wants Ako to work on his tongue then he returns the for her.  After a little while, the drunken Keita pulls Ako’s top down and tells her that he’s going to see how excited she gets when doing these things and proceeds to go to work on her twin peaks. He starts off a bit rough, but after a hint from Ako he gets gentle and asks her if it’s OK for a brother and sister to do this?

       Well, Ako tells Keita that she’s a sister Santa for now. Keita eventually works the rest of Ako’s outfit off and is about to go to work on her lower half when she gets a telephone call from the front desk saying that their time is up in five minutes, Ako asks for an extension, but the front desk tells her they’re booked solid so they have to leave, and when Ako looks over to Keita she sees that he’s asleep.

      When Ako returns to Keita’s side she bops him upside the head for falling asleep then she heads to the bathroom to take care of a moisture problem lamenting that if she knew it would have turned out like this she would have brought some spares.

     On their way back from the karaoke bar, Keita tells his sisters that he doesn’t remember a thing but he doesn’t feel stressed out anymore, and he thanks them for their help. As the episode ends, Ako and Riko bicker over what the other sister did with Keita, and Ako is still dealing with her moisture problem. Well, that’s all for this OAV.

       Well, I’ve always liked Kiss x Sis because of its playful execution of the wincest trope. While Keita relationship with Ako and Riko isn’t truly incest because they’re his step-sisters and it’s about as close as you can get without stepping into the creepy territory of Koi Kaze (real incest). In the previous two episodes of Kiss x Sis I’ve ripped on Keita for his lack of a man card, his parents say go for it, his step-sisters say go for it, his male classmates say go for it, even his own body says of it, and what does he do? Nothing. Well, in this episode he finally decides have a little taste of forbidden fruit, but only because he’s drunk, and to make matters worse, he doesn’t remember anything. I almost wish that I could swap Keita with Touya (the scumbag from White Album), Keita would make a better boyfriend for the pure and virginal Yuki, and Touya would have already passed his twin entrance exams and both Ako and Riko would be worring about buying diapers instead of making cosplay outfits. Eventhough I hate weak male leads in harem and love triangle anime, I like both Riko and Ako because those girls know what they want and they actualy go for it. What makes Kiss x Sis frustrating is that Ako and Riko offer Keita the perfect male fanstay of hot willing girls and he doesn’t have the sack to take advantage of a situation that could never exist but you wished it could.

 After watching the Nyan Koi! anime(or what bit was aired already) I decided to take a look at the manga which I was hoping would be just as much fun, and luckily, I was correct.

SUMMARY

Junpei wakes up and finds the family Cat Nyamisus in his room, Junpei yells at the cat telling it to stay out of his room, and that he’s allergic to cats. Nyamisus walks out of the room, however as she walks out he tells Junpei that he is “an annoying the person”

Junpei later goes to the kitchen where his sister and mother are at, he sneezes while he’s at the table, and there Nyamisus is sitting there with them. Junpei gets ready to leave, and his sister and mother begin to cuddle and hug Nyamisus. As Junpei leaves Nyamisus gives him a ‘dirty’ look.

As he walks to school Junpei overhears two other stray cats talking, about going to the Butchers shop, he begins to wonder what exactly is going on with him.

At school Junei is talking to his friends, telling them that he can hear and understand exactly what cats are saying,which of course they don’t belive him(would you?) In order to solve Junpei’s problems his friends suggest that he talks to Mizuno, one of his friends goes right up to her and tries to talk about Junpei’s problem, but Junpei just quickly runs out of the classroom, and walks back in.

Walking back to his house, Junpei begins to remember the day all of the chaos started. He was kicking a can along the road, and suddenly he kicked it so hard that it went flying and knocked the head off a cat shrine statue.

After breaking the head off he ‘fixes’ the statue by placing the head back on. Bur as he walks by the shrine once again he tries to see if it has been ‘fuly’ fixed by attempting to pull the head off.

Yup, still broken…

Junpei begins to think that because the statue was broken by him that he might be cursed, however in order to satisfy the ’sprits’ he takes out a can of cat food and places it in front of the shrine as an offering. Nyamsus suddenly appears out of nowhere and begins to understand why Junpei can understand what she is saying, because he broke Jizo’s head. The chief priest arrives and finds Junko in front of the shrine along with the cat food he used as and offering. The priest finds the food at shrine and asks if it is an offering, Junko just says yes. The priest then asks if Junko he’s into the Jizo. The priest begins to explain that the Jizo has protected the land for years, and that it is very popular…but…

The Priest walks away, and after seeing Junpei give the Jizo the cat food, the man is sure that it will be very pleased with Junko. But before the priest walks off Junpei wants him tell him more about the Jizo. The old priest allows Junpei to come into his house in order to explain. In order to explain the Jizo to Junpei the priest takes out a large scroll and begins to read it all… another cat appears at the mans house and Junpei allergies increase 2x, the two cats begin to talk, and of course Junpei can hear every bit of it.

As the two cat talk the continue to insult Junpei and the priest who is getting into the reading of the scroll. Tama(the other cat) begins to explain the curse.

Soooo he must perform good deeds for cats or else he’ll turn into a cat. Junpei despises cats so he immedately objects to thought of helping out cats. Junpei begins to turn into cat. But it’s nothing but a dream. Tama and Nyamusis arrive to Junpei’s house with some more cats, 3 more. His allergen increases by 4x . The cat has arrived because of a human who has been attacking them. Nyamusis say that he hits a plays around with them(in bad ways…), and they suffer from ‘ physiological damage’ or just ‘anime abuse’ like Junpei says.Nyamusis says the two cats that have come are the ‘lucky ones’. Junpei begins to think that if he helps the cats out, the curse will be lifted!!! So he “happily” helps the cats out.

Junpei and the cats find the human that has been messing with them.

But it turns out the person is Mizuno.

Confused Junpei walks away knowing she couldn’t be doing anything wrong. As he walks away the cats tell Junpei to yell at Mizuno and tell her to stop the “abuse”. Mizuno comes up to Junpei and is holding the cat as it yells “SAVE ME!!” However it turns out that Mizuno loves cats, and that her parent love dogs (and we all know how this goes…).

Junpei explains that the cats aren’t pleased with how Mizuno is treating or playing with them.

But Junpei is confused because Mizuno doesn’t mean any harm by what she is doing, however the cats surrounding him are coming in closer threatening Junpei(LOL). Junpei begins to tell Mizuno a second time, but the two cats(Tama and Naymusis) come in closer and rub against Junpei’s leg(?). Junpei tells Mizuno to Let go of the cat(forcefuly?) and she puts the cat down and runs off crying saying that she won’t do it again. Upset that he hurt his crushes feelings he runs off upset as well, and the problems of the cats are solved.

Junpei begins to wonder about Mizuno and how he hurt her feelings and she right then appears in front of him. They both say sorry to each other, and Mizuno asks if she can meet Junpei’s cat. He says yes(of course!), and he mentions that nothing has happened since that day and that his life is back to seeming normal.

Junpei thinks that because he helped out some cats that all of the cat related problems will be fixed.

WRONG!!!

Unfortunately for Junpei, in order to fix the curse, he must help out 99 more cats.

THOUGHTS

Wow, that wasn’t bad, not bad at all. And it was actually pretty funny as well. Junpei is such an unfortunate person, seems like he’s always stuck in some sort of trouble of delimah. I can’t wait to continue reading now. The manga is going to be released in the states June 10,2010 , and I’ll definitely be buying it.

It seems like the anime is pretty faithful to the manga as well. I’ve taken a look at the next few chapters of the manga, and I’m sort of surprised at the length of each chapter, there are about 34 pages a chapter, even all the way up to the 15th, it’s kind of wierd, especially for a comedy series. The manga is released monthly though, but it’s released online only, and the released into the manga volume format, which we in america will be getting. But I’m a bit worried about the company handling the manga, CMX Manga, the manga branch of DCcomics, which has Tenjou Tenge, I’ve seen some of CMX’s stuff in bookstores and the quality of the paper and maybe just about everything is terrible, why didn’t Yen Press or even DelRey get the manga? and I can really trust their translations and overall quality of printing, but whatever, I’m still buying it.

The main story of this series is, differnt…but not in a bad way, it’s sort of refreshing maybe? and like I mentioned, it’s pretty funny at times. The anime a really funny as well, especially episode 4 and 6. And the art is another plus side as well, I really like it, and the character designs are good as well.

But I’m definitely looking forward to reading the chapter with the twins, even though the anime supposedly follows their story very closely. And there are quite a few character left.

So, this was a very good chapter, if you love a good comedy manga/anime then you should definately give it a try, and you should try it especially if you’re a cat lover~. I may continue to write about this series, may even do chapter 2 soon! can’t wait to continue this manga,and the anime!

And I won’t be doing Negima this week since it seems to be mostly fighting anyways. However I may get to AneDoki.

Tenemos pociones mágicas. Se avecina una nueva Cruzada. La Cruzada Definitiva. Las mujeres cristianas, jamonas y españolas están en juego. Y jugando, los españoles somos de los mejores….

So freaking scary xD!

To anime co raz bardziej przekonuje, że będzie to najlepsza komedia tego sezonu ^^!

Anyways, poznaliśmy w końcu cały harem głównego bohatera i powiem wam, że Ichinose chyba najbardziej mnie przeraża. Głównie dlatego, że jak gada to gada jak facet. No i zachowuje się jak facet. Jest typowa stereotypową chłopczycą. I to mnie przeraża jak mało co xD.

Ogólnie mówiąc, trochę dziwny ten harem. A to dlatego, że main hero, kocha się tylko w jednej lasce, a resztę delikatnie mówiąc, ma olewkę. A dziewczyny? Ofkors wszystkie się w nim kochają … co jest rzeczą oczywista, ale to zachowanie Shinjiego … strange, very strange.

No i dochodzą do tego, te cholerne koty xD!

Ogólnie mówiąc, obok Darker than Black S2 to jest to najlepsze anime tego sezonu. Keep up the good work ^^!

Wielu ludzi twierdzi, że cenią sobie szczerość. Ciekawa czy taka szczerość jest akceptowalna xD?

O dziwo, nadal oglądam ten show xD.

Pomimo faktu, że nadal większą cześć gagów nie rozumiem, bądź nie potrafię nawiązać do określonych anime, to i tak jest śmiesznie. Można się pobrechtać. I oto właśnie chodzi, co nie ? Kurdę nawet nie potrafię napisać o fabule w takich większych konkretach, bo każdy odcinek, ma swoją własną fabułę, która nie nawiązuje do poprzednich odcinków. Takie one-eps arci, że tak to nazwę ^^.

Ciekawy jestem tylko, czym zaskoczą nas twórcy przy następnych odcinkach ^^.

When the Japanese otaku matchmaking service Otakuma conducted a poll of users’ favorite anime between April and August of this year, the results revealed a surprising trend. Among Japanese otaku, men appear to prefer moé anime, to little surprise. However, four out of the top five shows female otaku like most are giant robot anime. The era of the Gunonna and mekajo dawns!

I believe that women’s self image and societal expectations of women’s physicality are very important women’s issues. Heck, these topics are important overall, in general. So, I found this week’s readings to be very important. But I liked Mernissi’s article especially. I felt that she brought a very different and enlightening perspective, and had some interesting ideas.

The very title, for instance, is thought provoking: “Size 6: The Western Women’s Harem”. The idea that our society’s rigid, harsh, and downright expectations of women’s bodies create an environment as restrictive and demeaning as a harem. In her article, Mernissi talks about how women are negatively affected by body image, and how their self esteem suffers as they strive to imitate what they think people want.She states, “Being frozen into the passive position of an object whose very existence depends on the eyes of its beholder turns the educated modern Western women into a harem slave”.  She places the blame on both men and women. She implies that educated women should know when their human rights are being taken, reminding the reader that Western women are offended by the veil but are also demeaning themselves by being something they are not, by sacrifcing their happiness for a societal ideal. But men are alsoto blame. Mernissi uses Chinese footbinding as her example of a shameful beauty pactice supported by society. She says, ”Chinese men did not force women to bandage their feet to keep them from developing normally—all they did was to define the beauty ideal.” In other words, if you support an unfair practice or unfair beauty standards, then you are part of the problem even if you do not say anything directly.Mernissi also gives some history in her article as well, reminding readers that as beauty standards have changed over the year, presenting thinner and thinner women as the “ideal”, self-esteem issues and eating disorders have skyrocketed.

Mernissi’s article is certainly fascinating and has interestng points to make. (Some NYC shop ladies are freakin’ MEAN, for one!) Perhaps most important however, is her idea that body-image is related to personal rights, to women’s rights. If we deny ourselves happiness over societal images, over the pursuit of something unhealty and unrealistic, instead of loving ourselves for who we are, then we are supporting injustice and stripping ourselves of our basic human rights.

HEY, why don’t we forget about Ken for a bit and just focus on the REAL STARS here?

Perhaps some of you remember my inital thoughts on Seitokai no Ichizon in the 2009 Fall Anime Season Impressions post. Well I would like to say that this series is the complete opposite from what I thought it would end up being.

 At first I had written(thought) on my fall 2009 early impressions page that Seitokai no Ichizon would be a complete waste of time, and not worth watching in the slightest, I even gave it a -5% chance of watching rating(not the lowest on the list though…).

And after being convinced to watch the series, I decided to give it a go. despite the positive feedback I’d heard about the show I was still skeptical about and wasn’t expecting much at all. However, when I went to watch the first episode I was really shocked at how good it was.

And the OP isn’t bad either.

The girls were cute(Aka-chan, Mayufu) and sexy (Chizuru, and Minatsu), and the male lead of this awkward harem is Ken, who is not at all shy with his feelings toward any of the girls. Ken also seems to be obsessed with playing H games, and in some instances the games’ female characters are the actual girls in the “real world” of the anime, which I find pretty amusing considering he wants all of the girls in actuality, Ken wants “the perfect harem end”. But despite all of these awesome characters, the true star is Kurimu Sakurano/Aka-chan, but I honestly prefer Minatsu over Aka-chan, I think Aka is just a little too underdeveloped for my taste.

-AKA-CHAN-

Aka-chan~! the star of this show!(forget Ken!!!) While most of the charcaters that surround her seem to have an interest in particular aspects of Otaku culture it seems as though Aka-chan is into pretty much every bit of it. Aka-chan is the loli character of this anime in almost every way. She’s cute, acts like a kid, and is super super moe!!! It may be important to mention that Aka-chan apparently has a disorder(?).

-MINATSU- 

Prehaps my personal favorite of all the girls in this anime. She’s the tsundere of Ken’s haremwich probably gives me even more of a reason to love her! also the writers constantly hint at her possibly having a slight-crush on Ken. But unlike the other girls in Ken’s harem Minatsu is a bit of tomboy, which it kind shows in her behaviour and even her voice. Like I mentioned before with Aka, it seems as though everyone in the council has an interest in one particular bit of Otaku culture, for Minatsu it looks like she’s really into Light Novels (she mentions Index and Baka-test at one point too!)

-CHIZURU-

The sadist of the group. She can control pretty much anybody she wants, and seems as though because of this everyone fears her(only the one other character in episode 3). She’s also clearly the most well endowed of Ken’s harem, which isn’t there always the “model like in structure girl” in harem anime, she also seems to be into bondage-like activities as well… for Chizuru I can’t exactly tell what her interest is in Otaku culture, if anything it seems as though she’s into Yuri(girlXgirl)

-MAYUFU-

The yaoi fangirl of the group, but you’d probably never be able to tell just by looking at her, in about episode 4 she get’s Ken to make a Yaoi H game for her. And it seems as though she’s into normal RPGS as well, which was shown a bit in episode 3 when she was being interviewed with the member of the Jounalism club. She’s probably my least favorite of the group though…

So the characters certainly seem different from most of what I’ve seen in a long time. and I think it’ll be pretty fun to continue to watch these characters as the series movie along.

The anime as of now seems to parody many of the popular anime as of recently, such as Strike Witches, Gurren Lagann, Higurashi, Umineko(?), Haruhi Suzumiya, and many others.But prehaps the most famous of them all is the Strike Witches parody, which was actually co-animated by Studio GONZO, which I find rather amusing. The show also parodies H games which was mentioned above.

 Since I’ve mentioned the animation not too long ago, why don’t I just take a stab at it. When I first saw screen caps for the series I didn’t think much of the art or the animation. But once I got around to watching it, it seemed actually pretty good. I actually really like it. And if you take some time into looking at it closely you can see that in some shots there’s actually quite a bit of detail. The uniforms also may deserve some mention just because they seem so different compared to normal uniforms used in anime, the purple and black stripes, and the different/unique boots the female characters wear. It looked kind of wierd to me at first, but I quickly really liked them, they seem sort of punkish in style actually. And the designs of the female characters are very appealing, with the different hairstyle and all, Minatsu’s hair style stood out the most for me without a doubt. However Ken seems the least unique of all the characters, but considering the fact it was meant for males(such as myself) it really doesn’t come as a shock, and since it’s a harem with a predominantly female cast of characters your attention is meant to be directed towards them anyway, and it is generally easier to design a female anime character as opposed to a male one.

 Face it, there is no real story here, it’s just a story about an otaku-centric(?) student council and all of there wierd adventures(?) in the world of otaku-ism and anime/manga related material. Very simple, and I really like it. It seems as though so many series nowadays try to have some epic plot, and in the end fail at the attempt. However episodic series like this with no real story and know it has no story usually are some of the best of the new anime coming out. Examples: K-ON!/Lucky Star/Haruhi(some plot though)/Natsu no Arashi!/Hayate no Gotoku!! and many others are examples of some of the most succesful anime as of recently. And I think it’s because they don’t try to form some epic story, even though quite a bit of these series success has been due to the large amounts of moe. And I think like many of those series(with no real plots), this one will be successful/ should be.

The plot was simple, which was enough for me, but the novels the anime is based off of had gotten some negative feedback, which was the reason why I was planning to avoid it. But then someone convinced me that this was an excellent series.And about the novels, one of the things I thought was entertaining about the series is that they constantly make references to the novel or realize that there in an anime, which is based off of light novels, the characters are fully aware of the fact that they are in an anime. At one point in the first episode the characters even question why their novels got an anime, they also wonder about how the series will be named since each of the individual novels in the series are given different titles(much like the Haruhi novels in a way).

So~! overall this is a surprisingly good series. I certainly am glad I didn’t pass this one up, it would have been a missed jewel for sure, and it seems as though the show is getting more popular as time progresses, which could mean that DVD/BD sales will be up, which if they are we could get a second season(not confirmed). So I think tha pretty much any anime fan would love this series, it’s funny, cute, has a bit of sexy, and overall is just plain fun. While the anime isn’t over(about 6 more episodes left), I really hope it can maintain the energy it has for the past 6 or so episodes. And if this series manages to maintain this amount of amazing quality throughout the rest of it’s run, it may well end up being the anime of the season for, and possibly the comedy of the year. Now on my watch list!!!

Apartment of The Sultan's Mother

The line for the harem can get ridiculously long so if there was ever a short line, take advantage of it. To our luck, there were only about five or six people ahead of us when JC and I awaited to purchase our tickets. The entrance to the Harem is not included in the admission ticket you first purchased to get into the Topkapi Palace. (Way to make money right?)

The Harem is the home of the sultan’s mother, all of his concubines, his children and their eunuch servants. One of the first rooms is the Hall of Ablution Fountain. Its interior is beautifully decorated in Iznik tiles. The room leads to the courtyard of the eunuchs. The main entrance of the harem separates the concubines and their families from the courtyard of the eunuchs. The main entrance is followed by the sultan’s mother and then the courtyard for the sultan’s consorts and his concubines.

The room of the sultan’s mother is one of the largest and most important part in the harem. The only rooms that were open to the public was the dining room and her bedroom. The interior was also beautifully decorated with Iznik tiles. Her room is connected to the sultan’s mother’s bathroom and the quarters of the sultan. Her bathroom consists of multiple rooms with domes and glass tiles for natural sunlight. The floor is covered in white and gray marble and the marble tub includes an extravagant fountain with gilded iron grills. These iron grills seem to be the characteristic features of the Topkapi Palace.

Our self guided tour took as outside to the Twin Kiosk. The interior is beautifully decorated in stained-glass windows. From the inside, it has an amazing view of the Galata Tower. This is where the crown prince resided until they became adults.

Outside of the Twin Kiosk is the The Courtyard of the Favorites.  This is where the sultan’s favorite consorts lived. They were able to enjoy the beautiful scenery from their windows.

Gate of Salutation

The more I travel, the more I realize that the less explored sites often take my breath away more so than popular touristy sites that everyone says it’s a “must-do.” Maybe it’s because I have higher expectation for sites that everyone talks about and less expectations for sites that aren’t mentioned in every single guide book and travel blog.

When I come across something totally unexpected, it leaves an impression and makes me wonder why it doesn’t receive the same amount of publicity as other popular sites. Maybe the impressiveness of the sites becomes diminished once it’s a major tourist attraction. To me it’s no longer as authentic as something that’s hidden in a back alley. It becomes another form of western commercialism charging additional fees for this and that and higher fees for more experiences.

However, not all popular tourist destinations fail to live up to it’s hype. For example, everything I’ve ever read about the Forbidden City was nothing but praises of beauty and extravagance. Even with high expectations, it still blew me away. I had the same kind of expectation for the Topkapi Palace but it wasn’t what I had hoped for. Maybe my expectations were too high.

It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the former primary residence for the Ottoman Sultans before they moved to the more westernized Dolmabahce Palace on the Bosporus River. The Topkapi Palace became museum for it’s fine example of Ottoman architecture and it’s collection of porcelains, weapons, armors, calligraphic manuscripts and it’s most prized treasure and jewelry.

JC and I bought our entrance tickets and proceeded through the Imperial Gate. It was covered in marble and written with gilded inscriptions over a high arch. The gate led to the first courtyard followed by the Gate of Salutation, which was also richly inscribed with calligraphy.

Imperial Council

The first building that instantly caught my eye was the Imperial Council. You can’t miss it with it’s naturally illuminating gilded exterior. The porch and floor was made entirely of marble. The white and green wooden ceiling was decorated in gold.  The exterior walls and entrance was plastered in gilded gold. No other building in the Topkapi Palace that I had seen matched up to the lavishness of this one.

JC and I wandered in and out of the courtyards just to get a feel of the palace. It was grand in size but it didn’t match up to my expectations. Like any other major tourist attractions, swarms of tour groups and visitors filled up the palace as the day progressed. Lines were getting excessively long and visitors were getting impatient.

The Imperial Treasury was one of the main sites of the palace. The line to enter snaked around and around and it moved at a snail’s pace. When we finally got in the air was humid and musky. Swarms of people crowded around the glass windows to get a glimpse of the glistening jewels. I’m not a big fan of things that sparkle but curiousity made me wonder what everyone was drooling over.

The one thing that did make me go ga-ga was the view from the balcony. Of course, the photo doesn’t do it justice but I had an amazing front row seat since every one was too busy being enchanged my jewels. I got to enjoyed another one of Mother Nature’s masterpiece.
