By HarlemGal I finally went to go see the movie Precious over the holiday weekend and all I can say

By HarlemGal

I finally went to go see the movie Precious over the holiday weekend and all I can say is “go see it.” I thought the entire film was excellent from start to finish. However, I under estimated the power of the subject matter and how it would affect me. I read all the reviews in the newspaper and online, but I had no idea this film would send me to a place of endless tears. I cried, cried and cried. As a matter of fact, the movie theater I was at had everyone bawling, like children. It’s that good and emotional of a film!

All of the actors were excellent in the film, especially Gabourey Sidibe. After seeing Sidibe’s performance, I hope she receives a ton of acting award nominations for Precious. If I was a member of the Oscar Academy, I would vote for her! If no Oscar nod happens, the next best thing would be for the entertainment industry to reward her with endless acting opportunities. Go see the film for yourself and tell us what you think. Precious is showing at the Magic Johnson Theater at 125th and Frederick Douglass Blvd.

Sugar Ray’s Harlem, Back in the Day By COREY KILGANNON When Sugar Ray Robinson ruled the ring

Sugar Ray’s Harlem, Back in the Day

By COREY KILGANNON

When Sugar Ray Robinson ruled the ring as a champion welterweight and middleweight in the 1940s and ’50s, the most important member of his team of corner men was neither his trainer nor his cut man.

It was, perhaps, Roger, his personal barber, to whom responsibility fell for Sugar’s highly maintained coiffure: flattened, straightened, greased and with a stylish wave.

“He never went into the ring without making sure his barber, Roger, put every strand in place after every round,” explained the Rev. Robert Royal, 80, a well-known Harlem minister and Robinson family friend. “Wherever you saw Ray, you saw Roger.”

Sam Falk/The New York Times

Sugar Ray Robinson, friends said, insisted on keeping his hair straightened, greased and waved.

And the place one would most likely see Robinson was in Harlem, where he strode over the vibrant night life like a colossus. Mr. Royal and other senior statesmen of Harlem gathered Tuesday night to turn the clock back half a century, when Sugar was Harlem’s darling.

There he was, cruising in his custom flamingo-pink Cadillac, or jumping behind the bar to mix drinks for the luminaries in his nightclub, Sugar Ray’s, which became a staple of New York’s social scene.

The occasion on Tuesday was a book reading at the Hue-Man Bookstore, at Frederick Douglass Boulevard, near 124th Street, a block from the old nightclub, long closed now.

As Wil Haygood read from his new book, “Sweet Thunder: The Life and Times of Sugar Ray Robinson” (Knopf), some of the gray-haired guests murmured in agreement; they hung around afterward to share their memories of Robinson, providing a listening tour of a Harlem popping with excitement.

There was 940 St. Nicholas Avenue, where Robinson rented his mother a spacious apartment after he won his first big purse, $6,000, in 1941. There was the basement of the Salem Methodist Church, where Robinson learned to box after moving to Harlem from Detroit at age 11. And there was the string of buildings Robinson bought at Seventh Avenue and 124th Street where he opened Sugar Ray’s, which attracted celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Jackie Gleason, Nat King Cole and Elizabeth Taylor.

“Anything you want to know about his bar, ask me,” said Representative Charles B. Rangel, the Democrat from Harlem, who showed up at the reading to introduce Mr. Haygood. Mr. Rangel recalled his days as a desk clerk at the Hotel Theresa, near the club. He said that his job included escorting female guests to Sugar Ray’s, where, “I was the unofficial host.”

In his book, Mr. Haygood, a writer for The Washington Post, paints a romantic portrait of Robinson cutting a stylish figure in Harlem, whether chatting with Langston Hughes, escorting Lena Horne or giving boxing lessons to Miles Davis.

Robinson was always dapper, and Mr. Haygood, dressed in a pink shirt and tie, said he wore it in honor of Robinson’s Cadillac, which the boxer modestly called “the Hope diamond of Harlem.”

“He turned his life into a waltz,” he said after the reading, “a waltz through the times in which he lived.”

Mr. Royal, who once managed the renowned Palm Café on 125th Street, and who spoke at Robinson’s funeral in 1989, said, “He was a solid family man who invested in his community.”

Robinson was a fluid boxer who possessed a quick jab and knockout power in both hands. He fought 202 bouts over a quarter of a century and defeated men like Jake LaMotta, Carmen Basilio, Rocky Graziano and Kid Gavilan.

Pound for pound, the best boxer ever: that is how Robinson is often labeled by the purists. And the verdict in the room Tuesday night seemed unanimous that he ranked just as high in the realm of Harlem night life.

Robinson wore suits tailored by Sy Martin, who made garments for people like Duke Ellington. Robinson took his entourage — a prototype for what is now commonplace among celebrity athletes — on his travels abroad. It included his trainer, golf pro, nutritionist, manicurist, driver, and, of course, Roger the barber (whose last name has been lost).

Robinson was one of the first black celebrity athletes who was also a businessman, and one of the first high-profile black figures to invest in property in Harlem and to start his own business, setting an example for other black residents there, said Arthur Barnes, who was born and raised in Harlem and is now chairman of the board of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem.

Robinson used a mix of street savvy and business acumen to steer clear of mob fixers and vulture promoters, Mr. Barnes said, and insisted on representing himself when negotiating purses and television paydays, “because he was the one taking the blows.”

Several guests at the reading told stories about Robinson’s relationship with the jazzman Davis. Robinson agreed to train him at Harry Wiley’s Gym at Broadway and 136th Street.

“I trained at Harry Wiley’s as a kid, and one day I said, ‘Who’s that guy so sharp over there hitting the bag?’ ” recalled Paul Johnson, 55, of Harlem. “They said, ‘Oh, that’s Miles Davis.’ Sugar Ray agreed to train him.”

“He hurt a few musicians who didn’t want to listen,” Mr. Johnson said of Davis. “He knew how to use his hands. Sugar Ray taught him.”

The Rev. Dino Woodard, a former sparring partner for Robinson, said that he helped train Davis and that he was a respectable boxer who always wore protective headgear to protect his trumpet-playing lips.

“Sugar Ray invited Miles to come up, and he come up every day when he was in town,” said Mr. Woodard. He told the story of Davis slugging his drummer for arriving late to a gig and later explaining, “I had to Sugar Ray” his behind, using a less printable version of “behind.”

In the 1960s, when Harlem was in decline as a jazz and cultural mecca, Robinson moved to Los Angeles. He died, having burned through his glory and his millions, at age 67 after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Mr. Johnson said he remembered a handler of Robinson’s who advised the boxer to invest his money.

Robinson would say, “Oh, just get my clothes out of the cleaners,” Mr. Johnson recalled. “Sugar Ray later realized, ‘I should have listened to him.’ ”

Princess Jenkins is the owner of the Brownstone, a New York City clothing and accessories boutique. Last fall, Ms. Jenkins surveyed the market and realized how difficult the next season could be. She met with her five top designers and urged them to produce the boldest fashions they were capable of — designs she knew would appeal to her customers’ flamboyant tastes. “I told them, it’s going to get really tight next year,” she said, “and I need the best you have to offer.”

They also mapped out a bigger marketing plan focused on three major events. In February, Ms. Jenkins rented a ballroom next door and staged her first fashion show, to which she invited 200 top clients. Sales from the event, she said, were “incredible.” Six months later, using decorations, curtains and designs from the show, Ms. Jenkins set up four booths — she usually books just one — during a small-business fair held as part of “Harlem week.” And, in early November, during the marathon, using three of those booths, she held another fashion show, this one with a D.J.

“The next time people come to 125th Street, they’ll remember there was something big going on there,” she said. “It’s all about building a lasting impression.” According to Ms. Jenkins, the moves have paid off with year-to-year sales up about 10 percent. She expects them to total about $350,000 for 2009.

Rivers, who has been a QVC vendor for almost 20 years, was on the network talking about an enormous fabric flower pin that’s part of her jewelry line. As we have said, our motto is go big or go home, so we loved it. It was $29.50.

Rivers said she wore the huge flower on Sunday when she attended the star-studded premiere of the musical “Dreamgirls” in Harlem.

“Last night I went to this huge opening,” Rivers said on QVC. “That’s (the flower pin) what I’m wearing.”

Rivers told viewers to go to a Web site, “Look it up, Dreamgirls dot something,” to see photos of her at the opening. Well, we went to Dreamgirls.com, and there were no shots of Rivers.

Instead, we saw five very attractive bare-breasted women beckoning those over 18 to enter the site. We take it that Joan gave us the wrong URL.

But we did find several Web sites that had shots of Rivers at “Dreamgirls,” and she was in fact sporting her flower, in silver.

On “The Celebrity Apprentice,” Rivers often wore her QVC jewelry. Maybe that gave her the edge that helped her win.

The new store, the first in the borough, opened in Harlem recently. The new warehouse location is at 517 E. 117th St (all the way East). It is surprising that there would be a single lot in this territory large enough to hold a Costco store being that most buildings in East Harlem are thin, walk-up, apartment row-houses. It is a slightly smaller than normal Costco compared to the ones in the outer boroughs. A lot of Manhattan residents try to buy in bulk to save money but that can be difficult considering how small most NYC apartments are. One recent shopper admitted that she was using her second bathroom as a storage closet. Considering how far East it is some pedestrian shoppers, which is the majority may find it difficult to get over there but if you can drive it’s very easy; being right off FDR Dr.

2010 is shaping up to be a landmark year for Harlem, New York. Known as the birth place of the Black artistic revolution, the Harlem Renaissance, denizens of this historic New York hollow have seen living conditions decline to a standard of living that would make so called “real” Americans cringe if they were forced to live there.

But help is on the way for the dilapidated domiciles, which rest from Lenox Ave to Seventh Avenue.

The housing row will make history as the first public housing block to undergo Green upgrades.

The Rose Smart Growth Investment Fund, who owns the buildings, is looking to take advantage of some federal stimulus funds via the Green Retrofit Program, which would award the group nearly $3 million after the work is finished.

Plans to install green boilers, solar roof panels, and brand new energy-saving devices in all 198 of the units will begin at the end of the year.

Now who says that good things cannot come from underprivileged places?

A few days ago, I unexpectedly went to two amazing and completely different restaurants in one day.

A few days ago, I unexpectedly went to two amazing and completely different restaurants in one day. This is quite a feat, considering I hardly ever go out to eat (although this is increasingly becoming a thing of the past).

For lunch that day, a coworker recommended that we all go to Ma Peche, a newly formed Vietnamese restaurant inside the Chambers Hotel in Midtown. The restaurant is currently situated in what appears to be a converted waiting area (I was told that they plan to move to a larger area on the first floor of the hotel very soon). We sat next to the elevators, and ate on a spruced up coffee table. It was really quite charming.

They currently have a limited menu, but offer nice $10 lunch options. I chose the Bun Du Riz, a well-portioned blend of fantastically seasoned pork ragout, rice noodles and saw leaf herb. It left me satisfied without stuffed — perfect for a lunch meal.

Later on that evening, I met up with some friends for dinner at Amy Ruth’s, a Harlem soul food restaurant. I couldn’t have been more excited, as I love soul food. I haven’t encountered many restaurants that offer it in New York, so it was a wonderful variation from the usual food palette.

The food was delicious but very heavy. I wasn’t able to finish my plate of smothered porkchops, macaroni and cheese, with collard greens (doesn’t that sound amazing?!).

Still, the food was great and inexpensive (my dish cost around $12). They offer a breakfast menu as well as dessert options to drool over, like rum cake and peach cobbler. This means that it is very important that I go back!

Both restaurants, actually, will require another visit

Catholic schools now provide a lifeline for disadvantaged, non-Catholic minorities in urban America, boosting graduation and college acceptance rates, and outperforming many equivalent public schools. But they are also disappearing from the very neighborhoods that need them most.
I’m listening to Empire State of Mind by Alicia Keys (awesome song). Miss Keys was playing in

I’m listening to Empire State of Mind by Alicia Keys (awesome song). Miss Keys was playing in Rockefeller Plaza this weekend when I was in New York City. It is that kind of event that makes you realize that this is where everything is happening. In my entire life I have been to this city seven times, and every time I go there it is a completely different experience. Ironically, I am more free in New York than I am in Toronto, and I am a Canadian. Maybe I should move. Anyway, here is a list of some cool things I did this weekend.

The Apollo Theater

1. The Apollo Theater

My wife and I took the subway to Harlem, getting off at 125th and Malcolm X Blvd. For some reason I was surprised by how many Starbucks there were. I was also a little surprised by how small The Apollo Theater is on the outside. There is so much history here I just assumed there would be a big gift shop and a huge outer-facade (is that even a word?). There is a tour you can go on that we couldn’t do because there was a matinee performance of Dreamgirls (I saw the original on Broadway).

2. We walked the entire length of Central Park

IT'S A CONCRETE JUNGLE!!!!

For the first time I walked the entire length of Central Park from Harlem to the Upper West Side. Next to Stanley Park in Vancouver this is the nicest park in the world. It barely seemed like any time went by, but we walked miles. We watched people skating, saw a turtle, witnessed a wedding and watched two jazz trios. I kept remembering all of the movies I have seen that take place in this park (mostly Woody Allen movies).

3. Angelo’s Pizza (Next to the Letterman studios)

Angelo's Pizza

New York has six million people, but we actually bumped into my family at this restaurant. Maybe it was because I wouldn’t shut up about how great it is. We all sat at Madonna’s table right there in the front window. We also ate at a few Italian restaurants with more nouveau cuisine, but there is something about the basics that will work forever. Good tomato sauce, white bread, cheese, pepperoni and spaghetti done in an old fashioned New York Italian style. The last time we ate here my wife talked to David Letterman shortly afterwards.

4. The Empire State Building

The Empire Strikes Back

One night we went up to the top of the Empire State Building. It seemed to be going through a cloud and it was snowing even though on the ground there was no snow. It was still a great view and we were able to see people practicing for the Macy’s Parade. Interesting factoid: the observatory that is further up was supposed to be a waiting room for zeppelin balloons.

5. Macys Parade Practice

Macy's Parade

Well we didn’t get to watch the parade but we did see them practicing. There is always something happening in this town.

6. We stayed near Times Square

WHAT TIME IS IT?!!!

Um…if there is a recession someone forgot to tell Times Square. It was much more crowded then it was two years ago when I was last here. And yet I never felt like I wasn’t safe. And I was mugged here once in the 80s. It is now completely different from the Times Square I was mugged in. It’s all chocolate and toys now. I’ll save my Broadway experience for my next blog, but here is a teaser: GO SEE IN THE HEIGHTS!!!! Also Rihanna played here on Monday morning for Good Morning America. I missed it but my niece saw her.

We stayed at the Westin off of 43rd. Nice comfy beds.

7. The Brooklyn Diner

The Mixed Marriage of Irving and Gina

This is my favorite place to eat in New York. This is an interesting breakfast they have called The Mixed Marriage of Irving and Gina which has challa bread and Italian sausage. It was delicious. I love mixed marriages myself and this was as delicious as my own mixed marriage. I also had pancakes the next day that were also soft and yummy. They serve polenta instead of hash brown.

8. FAO Schwarz

The BIG Piano at FAO Schwarz

One thing I love about New York is that they are proud of their film history and they take every chance they can to exploit/celebrate that rich culture. Here two FAO Schwarz employees gleefully dance on the piano while dozens look on.

9. Gray Line Tours

Part of the Berlin Wall stands near the WTC ruins

We took the Gray Line Downtown tour. This was the only way we could see everything we wanted in the short time we were in the city. The only place we got off the bus was at the WTC site. My father told me that when I was a baby we stood there as they were building the World Trade Centre. In the 80s we both went to the top of the World Trade Center. And now we stand looking at the construction of the Freedom Tower.

10. We didn’t get in to see The View but we did stand in a cold line

Take some time to wait outside in the cold hoping to get in to see The View

Actually this wasn’t a cool thing to do. It was a freakin’ cold thing to do! And we didn’t get in to see The View. We stood in the stand-by line early in the morning. They do give you a complimentary breakfast which is nice. And I did get to see producer Bill Getty walk into work. And I learned that The View is actually filmed in a really ugly building. And they don’t have enough seats, because even people with tickets couldn’t get in. Get a bigger theater Barbara!

Of course the real reason it was so busy and crowded is because it is much cheaper to go to New York City now because of the recession. So there are a lot of deals and I encourage you to go down and experience the city Toronto can only pretend to be. Most of my immediate family went down to spend some time together and celebrate some birthdays, good health and my sixth wedding anniversary.
