The latter part of my double feature in Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. The movie takes place the next day after the events of the last movie. Spoilers ahead. Beware.

Harold and Maria are together but she had to go to Amsterdam for work. It is perfect for Harold and Kumar because marijuana is legal there.

On the way to the airport, the duo meets Kumar’s ex-girlfriend, Vanessa (Danneel Harris) with her new fiancee, Colton Graham (Eric Winter).

Kumar is determined to win her back. On the airplane, Kumar smuggles some weed on the plane and pulls out a makeshift bong that looks like a bomb.

The duo is arrested and thrown in Guantanamo Bay.

I understand that the movie is trying to point of humorous finger at the attitude American has in a post-9/11 world, but it is so offensive to minorities, Southern people, gays, and women.

The movie is awful. The only saving grace was Neil Patrick Harris and his rainbow unicorn when he was tripping on mushrooms. NPH FTW!

Why was this movie made? How could Cho and Penn agree to be in this movie?

Judgment: Avoid this movie like the bubonic plague.

Rating: *1/2

Out of the ones that I bothered to see, of course, here are the ones that disappointed me the most.

Out of the ones that I bothered to see, of course, here are the ones that disappointed me the most.

1.Stop-Loss
With the anticipation of this being Kimberly Peirce’s follow-up to Boys Don’t Cry, I was stunned to see just how much of a by-the-numbers film it ended up being.
2.Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay
They obviously should’ve stopped while they were ahead, because the first film really had no business being hilarious at all. It has definitely run its course now.
3.War, Inc.
Disguised as another film, this is essentially just Grosse Pointe Blank 2, just without any of the good qualities of the first film.
4.The Life Before Her Eyes
It looked like a rare good role for Uma Thurman outside of Tarantino projects, and with a director like House of Sand and Fog’s Vadim Perelman, it’s hard to believe it came out this disappointing.
5.Step Brothers
If Apatow-produced projects are anything less than non-stop hilarious, then they are a disappointment for sure. This one is such a scattershot piece of mostly-overdone physical comedy that it is just plain bad.
6.Righteous Kill
DeNiro and Pacino are finally together again! Yes they are, but it’s all put to waste in this formulaic murder mystery that would’ve fit nicely between some CSI or Law and Order shows.
7.Smart People
It was hyped as a sarcastic equal to recent indie gems like Little Miss Sunshine and Juno, but this one is mostly dull.
8.Be Kind Rewind
Proof once more that Michel Gondry should never write screenplays, but only direct. There are moments of fun in this film, but it is ultimately stale.
9.The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Yes, I had to include this film. Do not take it the wrong way, because I did like it very much…I was just expecting it to move me much more than it did.
10.Cassandra’s Dream
The build-up in this Woody Allen film is promising and the peformances by the leads are very good, but the resolution is maddening, and for the legendary filmmaker – extremely baffling.

The Pineapple Express is a delightful throwback to the good ol’ days of Cheech & Chong, whose heyday in the ’70s and early ’80s was propped by movies that brought pharmaceutically-fueled humour to the multiplex. As we roll our eyes at the increasingly FX-aided cinematic pratfalls of Adam Sandler and even Eddie Murphy, this comic confection comes on like a fresh daiquiri blast onto one’s mouth.

You’ve got Seth Rogen (who also co-writes/produces) as Dale Denton, a process server with a trunkful of neat disguises and a barely-legal girlfriend to boot. While waiting outside a potential contact, takin’ his customary toke, he witnesses a major underworld rubout pitting together rival Latino & Asian rings. Soon, he along with best bud/dealer Saul Silver (a wonderfully-used James Franco) and hapless middleman Red (Danny McBride) are on the run from not just gang hitmen but also no-nonsense DEA cop Carol (Rosie Perez, still smart-mouthed after all these years).

It’s bloody funny, and just plain bloody in parts; the explosive final showdown taking place in an abandoned barn housing a top-secret underground marijuana farm (check out the cool black-and-white opening scene, complete with 1940s-era Columbia Pictures logo) can go toe-to-toe with the best of John Woo. You can never imagine there must be something in “Pineapple Express” – the ultra-rare strain of marijuana from where the film takes its title – that makes its users hardier than common household cockroaches (geddit – roaches?)

Filtered through the deft comic sensibilities of Knocked Up writers Rogen & Evan Goldberg along with producing collaborator Judd Apatow (is this man a fuckin’ genius or what – he gets to wheel in Franco, who appeared in his TV series “Freaks & Geeks” as well as Knocked Up), The Pineapple Express is a sublime deconstruction of buddy-comedy films from a stoner’s perspective. It becomes a big-brother companion piece to the recent Harold & Kumar oeuvres, the latter which boasted additional comic ammo in the form of racial stereotypes. Rogen provides a surprising display of athleticism for his heft (particularly in the abovementioned barn sequence) which should bode good for his upcoming attempt at remaking The Green Hornet on the big screen.

Although M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” (which has been featured regularly on the trailers) is absent here, Huey Lewis & the News make a stunning return to form with the film’s theme song which plays on the closing credits.

Come on board The Pineapple Express – this hard-R thrill ride is worth it for the yuks alone.

Click to watch the W. trailer at Zuguide.com

In the trailer for W., director Oliver Stone’s third film inspired by a US president (the others being Nixon and JFK) and first inspired by Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, the story of George W. Bush’s rise to power and the missteps that led to him becoming the least popular president in modern American history are portrayed with all the subtlety you’d expect from the man behind Natural Born Killers. There’s hard drinking, fights with dad, and more than a few hints indicating a severe inferiority complex. Since the film is a satire, imagining Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, American Gangster), a non-comedian, playing Bush might initially seem like a stretch, but watching him deliver his first line in the trailer (“In history, we’ll all be dead.”) immediately validates the casting decision. If nothing else, the film seems to have a solid set of well-known actors, including Elizabeth Banks as Laura Bush, James Cromwell as Big George Bush, Ellen Burstyn as Barbara Bush, Richard Dreyfuss as Dick Cheney, and Toby Jones as Karl Rove. The biggest surprise is seeing how much they made Thandie Newton look like Condoleezza Rice.

Highlights of the W. trailer include: 1) Brolin dancing on a bar with a classy young lady. 2) Brolin running into some trash cans while drunk driving. 3) Brolin chuckling when Dreyfuss describes the use of torture techniques, or “fear scenarios.” And, 4) Brolin sitting on the john talking to Banks about the difficulty of getting out of his father’s shadow. My favorite part of the trailer is when Brolin recreates the moment when W. got a brush burn on the side of his face after choking on a pretzel and passing out. W. opened October 17, 2008. Check out the W. trailer at Zuguide.com.

The third trailer for director Oliver Stone’s (World Trade Center) presidential biopic W. has popped up and it looks to be a mash-up between the first and the second one. To me this looks like it could be a very entertaining, if incredibly biased, motion picture.

The film stars Josh Brolin (American Gangster) as George W. Bush, Elizabeth Banks (Meet Dave) as his wife Laura, Ellen Burstyn (The Fountain) as his mom Barbara, James Cromwell (Spider-Man 3) as his dad George H.W. and Jason Ritter (CBS’ The Class) as his younger brother Jeb.

Other cast members include Rob Corddry (Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay) as press secretary Ari Fleischer, Richard Dreyfuss (Poseidon) as Vice President Dick Cheney, Scott Glenn (Nights In Rodanthe) as Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Toby Jones (St. Trinian’s) as Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove, Thandie Newton (RocknRolla) as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Jeffrey Wright (The Invasion) as Secretary of State Colin Powell, Noah Wyle (NBC’s ER) as Secretary of Commerce Don Evans and Ioan Gruffudd (the Fantastic Four films) as British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Written by Stanley Weiser (Stone’s Wall Street), W. will premiere in the US on October 17th. Additionally, Oliver Stone has partenered with YouTube for a video-making contest. Go here for more info.

Not very good. The first one was much better. A stander stoner/sex comedy.

The Summer Blockbuster™ season may be winding down in Hollywood, and the dust has indeed settled as

The Summer Blockbuster™ season may be winding down in Hollywood, and the dust has indeed settled as the “dog days” of August gets set with quirky yet quality stuff running side-to-side with reprehensible dreck studios would want to put out for tax write-off purposes.

I was supposed to write a review for The Dark Knight but I am waiting to catch this modern classic once again…preferably on an IMAX theater this time around. By this time, I can give a proper assessment (that is, not one clouded by euphoric fanboy hype this time around) about this film.

Glad to know, though, that the “dog days” reputation of August is somewhat of an exaggeration here, with three of my most-awaited titles making their local bows.

As usual, local releases are in orange while must-sees are in italics.

Aug 06

You Don’t Mess with the Zohan
My Sassy Girl

Catching I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry recently on cable, I’ve come to a belated appreciation for his effort at addressing America’s homophobic tendencies even as I saw Jessica Biel’s presence as somewhat of a damper – maybe to mute the overt gayness of the premise…kinda like Aunt Harriet in Wayne Manor. Along the same lines, I see that Zohan should address not just that but also its xenophobia (Adam Sandler plays the titular character who leaves a career in Israel’s Mossad to pursue his true calling as a hair-dresser in New York). Watch out for my forthcoming review of this one.

My Sassy Girl – three years down the road and I’m not sold to this Korean wave crap. I’m not surprised that this US remake has gone direct-to-video Stateside – pretty inconsequential for a theatrical bow.

Aug 13

X-Files: I Want to Believe
Wall-E
Rogue
Dobol Trobol
Confessional

Never was too much of an X-phile myself (even if I used to catch the series intermittently). After reading the write-ups on this one, I think I’ll pass this over in favor of the new Disney-Pixar collab. Don’t get me wrong, Noel Vera notwithstanding, I’m still very much loyal to the Mouse House in spite of their frequent lapses into over-frickin’ sentiment. Cars never fails to draw tears to my eyes – quite a feat for a film with practically no human characters at all – and Ratatouille (rat*at*too-ee) is an all-out charmer that nearly got me taking up cooking classes. Stay tuned to this frequency for my review!!!

Rogue? Think Lake Placid and/or Primeval remade in a more habitat-appropriate setting. Kinda makes you think that the late great Steve Irwin must’ve died in vain fighting to restore the good PR of crocodilia.

Aug 20

Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Loving You
Death Race

Not too keen on this CGI-animated “bridge” story to the Star Wars canon…AFAIK, my enthusiasm with the series considerably waned when George Lucas wheeled in that Gungan assclown Jar Jar Binks in the prequels. Thankfully, his visage would be absent in this installment, but the critical response’s not too warm on this corner .

Yeah, sure, casting Englishman Jason Statham as an ex-NASCAR driver still boggles the hell out of me (who have maintained a mental image of NASCAR wheelmen as all-American good ol’ boys who cry in their beer whenever they hear a Tim McGraw tune on the jukebox) but what even baffles me more was why Joan Allen got signed to this. Then again, Dame Helen Mirren let her hair down to co-star with Nicolas Cage in the last National Treasure adventure, fellow Dame Judi Dench imbued some Oscar-tinged dignity to The Chronicles of Riddick…hell, even Imelda Staunton endured filming with the wooden aikido master Steven Seagal!!

Then again, one has to give props to the original film, a masterpiece of cult 1970s cinema which had a young Sylvester Stallone wreaking havoc behind the wheel opposite David Carradine.

Breaking news….”Hellboy II” will be opening locally on September 10!!

Makes me feel apoplectic in despair – who’ll still have the patience to catch it in on the big screen by then? By this time, everyone’s who’s well interested in this one would’ve bought their copies over at their friendly neighbourhood pirated DVD stalls.

Speaking of DVD pirates, I’ve finally managed to finish both Semi-Pro and Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (unrated version is the way to go!!!).

Nice to see Will Ferrell once again in retro mode – and battling bears again! Makes me wonder where’s Steve Carell when you need him? He’s Jackie Moon, one-hit-wonder-singer and player/owner/coach for the (fictional) Flint Tropics, who find themselves caught in the middle of the NBA’s buyout of the American Basketball Association (ABA) during the late ’70s (who’d have thought that future NBA legends Moses Malone and Julius “Dr. J” Erving played for ABA teams?). Sure enough, there are lots of leisure suits and equally groovy music on the soundtrack (give them props for using Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up” on the soundtrack – kinda reminds me of “Bend It Like Beckham”)

Will Ferrell (as Jackie Moon) – Love Me Sexy. Dig the attempt
to channel Barry White and Isaac Hayes!!!

Meanwhile…to show my apparent disgust over how the MTRCB butchered the local release of Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, I have got myself the unrated copy and treated myself to a lot of tasty stuff.

Bush? Check (then and again…the “Dubya” kind and…well, the other kind)!

Girls tonguing each other? Check!!

Ethnic jokes – well, it’s got them up the wazoo, that’s its raison d’étre.

Love Rob Cordry’s scene-stealing role as the cluelessly hawkish Department of Homeland Security head (well, whad’ya know…he was also in Semi-Pro too!!)

Nice to know that these two dudes did manage to get to Amsterdam, though….

I guess it really is a relationship. The connection, attraction and utilization of our blogs I mean

I guess it really is a relationship. The connection, attraction and utilization of our blogs I mean. I was away for a week so I wasn’t able to keep up with WordPress and everything that it brought me and I feel somewhat disjointed. It could be my stresses from my offline life or it could be that I jumped in feet first and started writing to my web log. My blog. I have a blog.

It is funny to consider because I do enjoy watching a sitcom that has a character in it by the name of Barney, Barney Stinson. =) How I Met Your Mother is a pretty decent show that is a great vehicle for one Neil Patrick Harris or as the movie-voice-over guy calls him, NPH. I enjoyed his Barneyisms from the first season and get a kick out of his character as a horndog for the ladies when he is in fact not into the ladies. Now every time I think of the words, “going in my blog”, I can’t help consider the statement of who and what is a Blogger? I can’t help help feeling like Barney Stinson, the horndog. LOL

The cast for the most part is a good one. Cobie Smulders. =)

Seeing NPH on Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle was even funnier. I will be sure to get myself a copy of Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay not only because I enjoyed the first movie but because NPH is in it again reprising his role of Neil Patrick Harris. LOL I still see him in the first movie where he wants to go for a lapdance. =) Rocking out. “Clamming” out

Okay I went off on a near tangent there about Harris but I began to consider his character of Barney Stinson and one of his favorite things to say, “I’m putting that in my blog”. I think they even started an actual blog but I never looked into it. I guess now is a good at a time as any right? Look at that, I found Barney’s blog via CBS. =)

So every time I am not in front of my computer doing this (writing to my blog), I am out there in the real world (LOL love saying that) living my life and trying to keep track of all the little bursts of inspiration that disappear when I sit in front of a blank Post Window.

I am happy that it doesn’t last long though because a simple comment of “I’m putting that in my blog” sparked this entry and i apparently had stuff to write about. =) I do enjoy having a Wordpres blog. I guess I could have used the many other Blogging Programs but this one suits me just fine. I do enjoy reading random WP Blogs and there is quite the variety out there so if you have found this page by looking at Random Blogs, welcome and I hope you had yourself a good read.
