Watched this movie with 3 of my pals, and let me just say that is what I call a good time!!!

Determined to lose his virginity, 18-year-old Ian (Josh Zuckerman) grabs two pals (Clark Duke and Amanda Crew) and drives from Chicago to Knoxville, Tenn., to meet Danielle (Katrina Bowden), the girl of his dreams … or at least that’s what she seems like on Facebook. Sweetening the deal is the fact that she’s offered to go “all the way,” as long as he can make it all the way to see her, of course. Seth Green and James Marsden co-star.

This is one of the overly-sexed up raunchy teen comedies like Harold & Kumar, and Superbad. And I think it’s safe to say to put this one in that same category as those two greats as well.

The one thing I didn’t like about the film was that it didn’t have the heart like those other two did. The characterization of our main character isn’t that well put out, and you sort of just walk into this character as a horny, geeky, 18 year-old. Also, his pal Lenny bones chicks left and right and it takes about the 100th one to know that’s not how you act, especially with chicks most of the time.

I can see why so many people thought it was so bad, but really I wasn’t expecting anything else other than a raunchy, sexed up, teen road trip comedy. I watched the trailer right before and I knew what I was getting myself into, so I accepted it for what it was, and I actually enjoyed a lot more cause of my acceptance.

There are a lot of things that happen in this movie that are hilarious, although some are better than others but really who cares. The gags were funny and a lot of the things that these characters said were perverted, but really funny and I will probably catch myself in the near-future using one their catchy lines.

The first three acts are very very cliched and predictable. And basically the film can be very predictable but it is really funny when the moments actually happen. As me and my buddies were watching this we were always guessing what came next and I’m not going to lie 90% of the time we were right, but we still had a lot of fun laughing and predicting.

Probably the best thing about this film is that it actually does feature a good cast. This new kid, Josh Zuckerman plays the geeky and nerdy Micheal Cera that we all know and love, but he doesn’t over-do the awkwardness and actually seems a bit believable. The best are the little side characters such. James Marsden plays this very uncharacteristic jock who is such an ass, but is so funny at the same time, and after watching this I can almost forget that he was ever in Enchanted. Seth Green probably has the greatest cameo of all in this movie as the free-spirited Amish man, who is so cool and funny that I wanted more of him, but really just didn’t get enough. And another problem I had with this film was that it didn’t feature enough cameos to keep the story fresh and exciting, cause I always wanted to see someone new but never got that.

Really this film is meant for a bunch of dudes to watch. There are boobs flying everywhere, and really if any dude that hasn’t enough a good firm laugh in a long time for about a week, this will probably cure you have that problem.

Consensus: Though a bit predictable and less heart-felt as other films of this nature, Sex Drive is a hilarious, and fun take on the raunchy teen-comedy genre, and actually does feature some great stuff but some are just better than others.

8/10=Matinee!!!

You know when your stoner friend from high school grows up and gets a real job and wears a suit and

You know when your stoner friend from high school grows up and gets a real job and wears a suit and you giggle every time you see him because he looks like an adult? Yeah, that’s how I feel about this photo.

That’s Kal Penn in the middle. You know….Kumar. He’s now working for the Obama administration as Associate Director in the Office of Public Engagement serving as a liason between the White House and Asian-American & Pacific-Islander communities. I love it when people do things that are (pleasantly) unexpected. I was impressed and intrigued last April when I read about Penn’s career shift (although I’d JUST started getting into ‘House’ and was bummed that he was leaving the show).

To be fair, Penn (or Kalpen Modi, his birth name that he’s now using as a non-actor) has played a few notable stoner ROLES. I know nothing about his personal life. However, I’ve spent enough Saturday afternoons watching ‘Harold & Kumar go to White Castle’ to find the irony in the fact that he’s now working for ‘The Man’.

*I’ve never done drugs and I generally don’t find drug humor all that funny…but for some reason, ‘Harold & Kumar go to White Castle’ is one of my favorite movies. I credit Neil Patrick Harris. It probably also helps that John Cho & Kal Penn remind me of half the guys I went to college with. I dunno…it’s weird.*

And, yes, I do feel like he’s an old friend. I’m not quite sure why. Maybe it’s because he’s my age and I’ve spent so many years watching him act. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t strike me as a “Hollywood” guy. Maybe it’s that whole “wait, didn’t I go to college with him?” thing. Either way, I enjoy seeing him do big things.

First off, let me preface this by saying that trying to compile a great buddy flick list is going to

First off, let me preface this by saying that trying to compile a great buddy flick list is going to be hard enough. There are so many movies that fit this description it’s almost it’s own genre. To widdle it down to 10 was near impossible so at the bottom I have some very deserving entries in the “Honorable Mention” Category. Next, and probably more importantly, let me tell you all that this list is devoted to my favorite movies out there that have impressive, memorable and hysterical “buddy” plot lines. As you will see in the entries below, some films are formulaic “buddy flicks” but others are indeed not classified as such but I’d still like to argue the case for them.

Traditionally a “buddy flick” would be a 2 man team which constitutes the two leads of the film bumping heads (either their own, or someone else’s) but I felt this list needed to break those culturally accepted constraints for some entries on this list to appreciate the “back and forth” that the characters in the list below dish out/endure. Lastly, I’m telling you all right now, this is my list of favorites, not the greatest of all time and just letting you know I won’t be including some generally considered classics such as 48 Hours, Midnight Run and the like. This list is my tastes, so I hope you agree with the films listed below, or at least enjoy the exercise…

1.)Volunteers – This is the absolute best teaming of Hanks and Candy and is also the first movie I ever saw which I’d consider a “buddy flick”. Also, because of this movie I know the Washington State University fight song better than that of my own college alma mater:P However the real key to this buddy flick is Gedde Watanabe, who in my opinion gave this movie the extra bit of humor it needed adding to the already great Hanks/Candy combo (but not getting the credit he deserved because he was lesser known). Still my number 1 choice by far!

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

2.)Shanghai Noon – This movie couldn’t have a had a more obscure cast than pairing Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, but when all was said and done, the pay off was motion picture history…even if I’m the only one who thinks it. Jackie’s straight man “royal guard” played so well off Owen Wilson’s charming “outlaw con man” that the movie could have gone on for 10 hours and I would have enjoyed every minute of it. “You said wet shirt won’t break, not piss shirt bend bars“.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

3.) Shaun of the Dead – Destined for a life that’s going nowhere, any hopes Shaun (Simon Pegg) has of overcoming his loser life are smashed by his friend Ed constantly bringing him down…that is until the end of the world happens and this team of losers proves they have the right stuff to save the day. Huge credit goes to Edgar Wright for penning this (especially all the cyclical layered humor that made this movie work so well) but it was the subtle back and forth between Pegg and Frost that sold it all. Looking back they are very reminiscent of the genius that was Hanks and Candy…only these two do it with that classy English style. “How’s that for a slice of fried gold?“

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

4.) Beverly Hills Cop – Hoping to get back in the good graces of you 48 Hours fans with this one. While this more of a 1 man show than a buddy flick, the exchanges between John Ashton and Judge Reinhold are very simply, some of the best cinematic Eddie Murphy material ever. The tough yet soft Ashton, the naive Reinhold and Murphy’s “look man I ain’t falling for no banana in my tailpipe” streetwise cop made for one of the very best police buddy flicks in cinema history…yes, even better than Police Academy. You can almost still hear Eddie laughing his famous laugh “Haaa, ha, ha, ha, ha“.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

5.) Willow - Now many of you have probably just finished asking, “WTF is this movie doing on a “buddy flick” list?“…well like I said above, this is my buddy flick list. I totally enjoy the back and forth between Val Kilmer and Warwick Davis so much I am probably one of the only people praying for a sequel just so I can those two go at it again. “OOh I’m really scared, (Shouting) no don’t! don’t! there’s a peck here with an acorn pointed at me!“.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

6.) Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle – Now this is the film that made a “stoner” buddy flick popular (and marketable) again. Sorry Dave Chappelle, Half Baked was great but it didn’t get re-kick start the genre like this one did. Not since Cheech and Chong have the studios been willing to take a chance on a reefer films and so paving the way for Pineapple Express, Surfer Dude and the seemingly endless travels of Harold and Kumar including Escape from Guantanamo Bay and the upcoming third installment A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas …where will it end? “I left my cell phone in the apartment…Should we go back and get it?…no we’ve already gone too far“.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

7.) Ghost Busters – Now this is probably not the first film on people’s mind when the phrase buddy flick is used but why not?? 3 guys kicked out of New York’s most prestigious university for doing (lazily) what they think they were born to do. Soon after, they get their own business up and running, enlist a 4th member to their troupe and set off to combat NYC’s newest paranormal infestation all the while spouting some of the most quotable and referenced lines in cinema history…if this isn’t a buddy flick then I don’t what is. “Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!!“

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

8.) Ocean’s Eleven…This is more of an “ensemble” buddy flick but still, if you didn’t crack up at the clever one liner shots the actors took at each other and the serious/un-serious tightrope walk of a plot, then you weren’t watching the same movie as the rest of us. This movie is an all aces buddy flick…nuff said!! “Ten oughta do it, don’t you think? You think we need one more? You think we need one more. All right, we’ll get one more.”…[BLINK]

Hi and Welcome back!! This is the place for some films that just don’t (to me anyway) fit the bill of the above 10, but they’re so damn close this was almost a Top 20. Enjoy!!

The Hangover - Not so much of a buddy flick but more of an all out, crazy rehash of the lunacy that ruled the 80’s…if anything can go wrong, it did. Taking cues from movies like Cannonball Run, and The Jerk this rag tag team, loyal to their friend the groom, goes through the ringer to find him, find out what happened last night, and to find out why they “feel” like they went through an actual ringer:P

Superbad – This movie, I believe, re-wrote the rules for a buddy flick to be more relateable to a younger generation. This ludicrous story takes two friends on a one night adventure to show just how much their friendship means to each other. Throw in some goofy cops, a Weird Science type house party and the most unbelievable series of events in an Apatow film, and you get two friends who weathered the storm for a great (Apatow signature) heartfelt and very 80’s era finale.

License to Drive – The best Corey/Corey film in my opinion and when I first saw this I wanted 2 things: a driver’s license, and crazy friends like Les, Dean and Charles. This was a pretty great and funny coming of age and buddy flick even though I was too young to fully appreciate how true to life this film was. This pretty much paralleled my experiences later in getting my license…save for grandpa’s Cadillac, the over bearing father, a crazy night on the town and Heather Graham…so that just leaves the dream sequences…yup, had those!

The Way of the Gun – Not even close to the traditional stigma associated with a buddy flick but Benicio Del Toro (fresh from The Usual Suspects) and a quasi likable (non-douche bag) Ryan Phillippe breathed unexpected life into master scriptwriter Christopher McQuarrie’s already great material. Del Toro stole the show but, in their on-screen ill fated attempts to strike it rich, he and Phillippe paved the road for non-traditional buddy scenarios with their symbiotic on screen chemistry.

Happy, Texas – I am a huge fan of Steve Zahn, and his pairing with Jeremy Northam was just comic gold and the perfect entry to round off this list. Mostly harmless, these accidentally escaped convicts, lay low in a small town (pretending to be gay pageant directors) and try to rob the local bank. This proves to be too much for the duo as the town’s charm ultimately wins them over, but the rouse they held the entire 90 minutes was as delightful as it was side splitting. Best part of the movie is the Wayne Wayne Wayne Jr (Zahn) attempt at pageant dance choreography! “I’m a tornado!!”

No, I am not racing others to date. This post is about my unusual preference in race when on the top

No, I am not racing others to date. This post is about my unusual preference in race when on the topic of physical attraction. This is my response to a fellow blogger’s post about being attracted to certain races. (You can read that blog post here.)

Like the majority of the people I know, I am physically attracted to those of the same (caucasian) race as myself. I have found that I am also attracted to Indians, pretty frequently. It may have started in college. I became close friends with an Indian guy. When I first saw, “Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle” I was attracted to Kal Penn much more than I was to John Cho. This may have all stemmed from my intrigue of India.

Kal Penn

Let me take you back…

George Harrison is my favorite member of The Beatles. I love when he brought another country (India)’s influence into the band’s music and lifestyle. I was inspired to do the same. I love Indian music, culture, clothing, movies, etc. This must have eventually led to my attraction to Indian men. Through my love of George Harrison, I wanted to gain a better understanding of India. I have really wanted to learn to play the sitar. That led me to my first Ravi Shankar concert last fall, which was amazing. Not many people I know, can say that they willingly listen to sitar music. It takes a lot of concentration and patience. I also came to watch a few Bollywood movies. One of my favorites was, “Rang de Basanti.” The cast included a handful of very attractive Indian guys:

Rang de Basanti cast

Rang de Basanti cast

famous Bollywood actor, Aamir Khan who was in Rang de Basanti

A few weeks ago I was people watching with a friend at the Dupont Circle fountain. My friend and I were asking each other who we found attractive of those people walking by. There was a group of guys standing by the fountain, a few of which looked Indian. My friend asked me who I found the most attractive, and I said I liked the Indian looking guy most. It’s not that I am consciously attracted to Indians because they are Indian, but I’m not quite sure why I like this race so much. Maybe I like the darker skin. Maybe it’s the beautiful eyes I’ve noticed many Indians have. Also, Indians have good lips, and I like the thick, black hair…

Are there any other races I am particularly drawn to? Well, I have had a crush on an Asian guy once as well as a Puerto Rican, and I am somewhat attracted to the main character in the B-movie, “Undercover Brother”, though it could just be the ‘fro…

Eddie Griffin, Undercover Brother

I also love Harry Belafonte

So I guess that while I have never dated outside my race, I would totally be open to it. Like I’ve said, I’ve frequently had crushes on those from other countries such as Scotland, England (ok, same race, but still foreign), India, somewhere in Asia (sorry, I don’t remember where, specifically), Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. I like the idea of an inter-cultural relationship being exciting, foreign, and different. Plus, any way to rebel against the “norm” is right up my alley.

Mr. Kumar goes to Washington — starting TODAY — as an Associate Director in the Office of Public Engagement at the White House! Yes, that’s correct! As reported earlier this year, funny man, Kal Penn, of quality film franchises such as Harold & Kumar and Van Wilder, and TV’s popular series House, decided to take a break from weed jokes, Neil Patrick Harris, and grumpy doctors, and work for President Obama.

Yay, awesome, good for him!

Anyway, let’s hope his first day doesn’t involve any crazy shenanigans or mishaps with our President, like this one…(NSFW/language/adult content)

I have never seen an episode of Star Trek in my life. I knew that one of the guys had no feelings

I have never seen an episode of Star Trek in my life. I knew that one of the guys had no feelings and the other guy was in the Priceline.com adds and on Boston Legal. But on Friday night we decided that we didn’t want to be the only people in the country that hadn’t seen it.

We got to the theatre 45 minutes early and it was already packed with men aged 35-45 who had escaped their parents basement for an evening of pop corn and maybe a little human contact. I didn’t know what to expect (well not much to be honest), but the first 20 minutes was action packed and lots of stuff exploded which is always good. It then it focused in on a young Luke Skywalker (wait that’s the wrong movie I think)… it focused in on a young William Shatner (actually I think that’s wrong too, well kind of)… it focused in on a young Captain Kirk racing through Iowa in his step-dads stolen car. The song Sabotage by the Beastie Boys played through the background and I realized right away this isn’t your mom and dad’s old school nerdy sci-fi movie.

Now youtube or the folks from Star Trek wont allow me to embed a trailer for the movie in this post… but the folks at Harold and Kumar are a little more relaxed and to be honest it’s a funny trailer so I’ve included it instead below (however if you want to see the Star Trek trailer click the link and it will take you to the correct youtube page. Star Trek Trailer)

Star Trek was great in my opinion, I didn’t need to be a Trekky to know what was going on and it kept me entertained the whole night. It had a good mix of action, story line and they didn’t make the characters too lame but at the same time they didn’t try to over do it with coolness… they were just rad enough I guess.

The one thing that I did find really hard to get used to was Harold from Harold and Kumar go to White Castle was Mr. Sulu, he’s the guy who drives the ship. It’s really hard to look at that guy seriously when you know he just wants to smoke a bowl and take the Enterprise through the White Castle drive-thru for a burger and fries. I kept waiting for Kumar to show up on the bridge… and even at one point I thought he was one of the extras in the background but sadly I was incorrect.

So in short. Star Trek was awesome… and going to the theatre was an experience on its own as there were a lot of different cats there; some who had never talked to a girl, some in leather trench coats, most socially awkward, and some who write blogs.

Live Long and go to White Castle,

Is this what he's serving President Obama in the White House? From CNN.com: LOS ANGELES, Califor

Is this what he's serving President Obama in the White House?

From CNN.com:

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — When Dr. Lawrence Kutner killed himself on the latest episode of “House: MD,” it was the beginning of a new career for actor Kal Penn.

The demise of Penn’s character cleared the way for the actor to move on to another “House,” the White House.

Penn, 31, will be an associate director for the Obama administration’s Office of Public Liaison.

“It seemed like something I would enjoy doing,” Penn said. “I figured it was something to do.”

He’s not retiring from acting, just pursuing a longtime desire for public service that was rekindled when he campaigned for Barack Obama’s election, Penn said.

Penn played a teen terrorist on Fox’s “24″ before joining the network’s “House” two years ago. He’s also known as Kumar Patel in the “Harold & Kumar” movie series.

The White House job likely ends his Kumar roles, he said. In fact, he will not consider any acting jobs until he leaves the Obama administration, he said.

Penn will take a big pay cut to work for the government, but he has committed to at least one or two years in the job, he said.

His focus will be as a liaison for the arts community and the Asian-American community, he said. He filled a similar role in the Obama presidential campaign, he said.

“We want to make sure that everyone’s concerns are heard and they are familiar with the president’s plans and proposals,” he said.

Penn said he spoke briefly with Obama after the election about “trying to find the right fit” for him in the administration.

He said he has bittersweet emotions as he leaves Hollywood to search for an apartment in Washington next week.

The writers’ decision to have Dr. Kutner commit suicide ensures Penn will not return to the show, although he said he leaves on good terms.

He felt “more than a little bit of shock and loss” to learn that his character would die in his final episode.

Even though he spoke no lines in the episode — and only his legs are seen when his body is found — he was on the set for the filming, he said.

Of all the actors in Hollywood, who would’ve thought the same man who played stoner Kumar from the classic “Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle” movies and who smoked weed with “President Bush” in the sequel would actually be working for President Obama in Washington. Not only did he play a stoner in those movies, but in addition played a terrorist in the hit show “24″. Unbelievable. Good Luck to him.

Okay, Kal Penn, seriously? Best dude ever. I don’t know exactly the A to Z of having sex with a king-sized anthromorphized bag of marijuana to getting a job working for the Obama administration, but Kal Penn actually pulled it off, and looked good doing it.

Sup, qt?

According to the LA Times and every other entertainment blog/news source updated today, Kal Penn’s newest real-life role is as the Associate Director at the Office of Public Liason. Faaaancy. Penn stated that he’ll “do outreach with the American public and with different organizations,” and help connect the Obama administration with arts and entertainment groups, as well as Asian and Pacific Islander organizations.

UH, SO COOL.

He worked extensively worked through the campaign, apparently, and I guess his hard worked really paid off. I gotta say, I am excited as hell for hottie, and, admittedly a little bit JEALOUS — I wanna work for Obama too!

Tonight I will dream many beautiful dreams of Kumar and Obama scarfing down mini-burgers together. Bliss.

Fassbinder pulls off a miraculous bit of mischief with The Third Generation (1979) — and who b

Fassbinder pulls off a miraculous bit of mischief with The Third Generation (1979) — and who better than Fassbinder for mischief! — he creates a broad comedy about terrorism. And while I imagine creating such a movie in a post 9-11 world would be unlikely, Harold & Kumar notwithstanding, imagine making this film in West Germany with the kidnapping and killing of industrialist Hanns Martin Schleyer by Red Army Faction (RAF) still heavy on the mind of audience.

To say that this film created a stir when released would be putting it mildly. While the film was praised by critics, several audiences engaged in their own cinema-attendance form of “radical politics”: in Hamburg, the film projectionist screening The Third Generation was beaten unconscious, and in Frankfort, angry audience members threw acid on the projection screen.

The thumbnail story of the film: an industrialist (Eddie Constantine, from Alphaville) has difficulty selling his security-related computer systems, so he conspires with the inspector general of the police to create and squash a terrorist cell of inept, superficial middle class leftists. I tell you the simple version of the story to get it out of the way so you don’t miss the chance to take in what is happening in front of you. This film isn’t as abrasive as its close cousin, Satan’s Brew (1976), but it is demanding viewing: unfolding in a densely-layered, high-pitch style that rewards repeat viewing.

Watching this film now, as broad and silly are some of its pranks and physical gags, I find myself as engaged and disturbed by the ideas and questions in this film. I suspect my experience has more to do with the character work in the film than the basic plot: for straw men and fools, the terrorist twits are compelling, realized cartoon-creations by a cast of Fassbinder regulars, exercising a great deal of control and specificity to create this universe. The constant collision of layers of sound, radio, television, and music worked for me far better than I at first expected, far better than it has in other densely layered work — and continues to haunt me while I write this response to the film.

Despite the controversy when this film was initially shown, after 1979 for all intents and purposes the film vanished: lack of television broadcast or other venues kept this film out of the public eye. And yet, it remained one of the films the director was most proud of up until his death (by his own ranking). This film was also one of only two for which he gave himself a cinematography credit. The highly articulate, always moving camera remains one of my favorite elements of this film.

Before writing Fassbinder’s film off as an audicious prank, consider what he said about the film back in 1979 “ . . . that in the last analysis terrorism is an idea generated by capitalism to justify better defense measures to safeguard capitalism.” The implausibility of the film’s plot doesn’t suggest “conspiracy theory” reading to his words, but drawing on the ideas and forces evoked in this film I see a kind of prelude to the use/repurposing of terrorism as a tool for political and military leverage in our own country.
