From the ever-illuminating Overthinking It and contributor Mark Lee: The Hubbert Peak Theory of Rock

From the ever-illuminating Overthinking It and contributor Mark Lee:

The Hubbert Peak Theory of Rock, or, Why We’re All Out of Good Songs

Many rock purists and music snobs (myself included) often lament the quality of most modern pop/rock music. “Music these days is so trite and derivative,” they say. “It’s just been downhill since the 60’s and 70’s. Those were the days.”

A few years ago, Rolling Stone magazine added fuel to the music snobbery fire with its “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list. Anyone casually paging through the list would notice that the bulk of the list was comprised of songs from the 60’s and 70’s, just like the music snobs always say.

I, however, wasn’t content with the casual analysis. So I punched the list into Excel, crunched some numbers, and found an interesting parallel between the decline of rock music quality and, of all things, the decline in US oil discovery and production:

Read the analysis here.

As we oil up our turntables and dust off the vinyls, we might smile a silent smile in honor of that most marvelous of the Marx Brothers, Harpo: Adolph (later known as Arthur, then as Harpo) Marx was born on this date in 1888 in New York City.

Yes everyone yesterday Oprah Winfrey announced that she was canceling her 25 year-long show in september on 2011. Since 1986 the Oprah Winfrey show has been bringing in an estimated seven million viewers a day. Her net worth has also been estimated to be around 2.7billion. Ms.Winfrey is going to move to the cable network with her new channel “OWN” which will be launched january 2011. OWN is a acronym for Oprah Winfrey NetWork. Oprah has said that after the show is cancelled she will not be moving it to the cable network with her but instead will produce shows and may sometimes make guest appearances on it. But many critics have been saying that her moving to the cable network will lower her ratings from the public and may leave some loyal fans upset, because some do not have cable and wont be able to watch her. But with a name thats a brand i doubt that her rating will be lowered. But After bringing in great revenues and great rating the CBS network has said In a statement, “We have the greatest respect for Oprah and wish her nothing but the best in her future endeavors. We know that anything she turns her hand to will be a great success. We look forward to working with her for the next several years, and hopefully afterwards as well.”

What are you doing September 9, 2011? A lot of people probably will be watching the final edition of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Winfrey has chosen September 9, 2011 because it’s 25 years to the day she started.

It was a battle for her to hold back tears as she told her audience that “25 years feels right in my bones and feels right in my spirit.”

Winfrey says she could never have imagined “the yellow brick road of blessings” that she’s received over the years.

Winfrey’s early years in broadcasting were in Nashville and Baltimore. In 1984, she then moved to Chicago to host WLS-TV’s morning talk show “A.M. Chicago.” That show was renamed “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1985.

A year later, Winfrey established Harpo Productions by spelling her name backwards. 1986 also was the year her talk show went into syndication.

She’s done OK with this TV venture. Earlier this year, Forbes put Winfrey’s net worth at $2.7 billion

She plans to start up her own cable network and perhaps start another talk show.

From Eonline.com: Oprah Winfrey says it’s the “exact right time” to say goodbye. I

From Eonline.com:

Oprah Winfrey says it’s the “exact right time” to say goodbye.

In a Very Special episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show airing today, Winfrey confirms plans to pull the plug on her namesake program on Sept. 9, 2011.

I love this show. This show has been my life. And I love it enough to know when it’s time to say goodbye,” a tearful Winfrey tells her studio audience.

“Twenty-five years feels right in my bones and it feels right in my spirit. It’s the perfect number—the exact right time. So I hope that you will take this 18-month ride with me right through to the final show.”

Her decision, she says, came after “prayer and careful thought.”

So farewell to the couch-jumping, car-giving, celeb-confessing, book clubbing, weight-watching, housewife-inspiring hijinks that earned her a bucketload of Emmys and loyal audience of some 42 million viewers each week.

“I certainly never could have imagined the yellow-brick road of blessings that would have led me to this moment,” Winfrey continues.

“So, the countdown to the end of The Oprah Winfrey Show starts now and until that day in 2011 when it ends, I intend to soak up every meaningful, joy-filled moment with you.”

But Winfrey’s not going to disappear completely. She will likely have a major presence on her forthcoming 24-cable network OWN.

Looks like The Most Powerful Black Woman On Television is saying buh-bye to Daytime TV. And really, after 25 seasons, how could you blame her? I mean, come on – she’s Oprah. This is probably the only person who can show up at the house you just moved into and tell you to get the fuck out.

Why’s she quitting? “Twenty-five years feels right in my bones and it feels right in my spirit. It’s the perfect number, the exact right time.”

But it’s not like The End of Oprah or anything. Far from it. Word has it she’ll be starting her own L.A.-based 24-hour cable network, “The Oprah Winfrey Network” – OWN. Look at that – Oprah’s moving from a mere show to an entire fucking network. Now that’s power.

Winfrey broke barriers for women, and black women especially, and still more for businesspeople. Her billions aside, “Oprah” is like a corporation, and she has the same cultural power as something “Google.” Everybody knows Oprah.

It’s just too damn bad that now, I’ll never get to be in the audience and go home with a free car.

The queen of daytime TV is leaving… at least that is what she says. Today she announced “After much prayer and months of careful thought, I’ve decided the next season, season 25, will be the last season of ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show.’” Don’t start to miss her yet. Oprah will do one more season and will focus on other facets of media afterwards. This NY Times article tells us about exactly what her future holds and where we should expect to see her next. The rise of this dynamic woman has inspired many and I can just hear the millions of fans crying right now. There is only one Oprah but who will take her crown? or is there anyone as popular and outstanding to do so…? Will shall see…

Rumor on the streets is that Oprah will announce today when her last show will be. My faithful friends at TMZ have a letter that Harpo President, Tim Bennett, reportedly issued to staff on yesterday. Click here to view the letter. Do you think it is really over?????? I am very curious to see the outcome of this.

On a different note, the father of Shaniya Davis’ (little girl raped and murdered last week) will be on the show today. Please tune in!

Hard to imagine a world without The Oprah Winfrey Show on weekday afternoons.

But that’s exactly what the world’s going to be like after Sept. 9, 2011, which will mark the end of Winfrey’s 25th season as host of her eponymous daytime talk show—and her last show altogether.
We can just hear the Rolodexes twirling as the folks at Harpo Productions start lining up celebrities to tape “goodbye, Oprah” messages.

“Yes, it’s true that she will be ending her show in September 2011,” a rep for Harpo tells E! News. “She will be speaking about it on tomorrow’s live show.”

Where will the big shots share, cry and couch-jump now? How will mere mortals get free cars?!

Deadline Hollywood first reported last week that Winfrey was gearing up to wind down in order to focus on the launch of her cable network, OWN (i.e. The Oprah Winfrey Network)—and it’s possible she could reestablish herself as everybody’s favorite small-screen couch companion over there.

More details will be coming tomorrow from the woman herself.

The first syndicated episode of Winfrey’s Chicago-based show premiered in 1986, and she’s been on the air ever since.

You think she’s been successful? Aside from the whole billionaire thing, in 1999 Winfrey took her show out of the running for the top talk show categories at the Daytime Emmys after the TV Academy presented her with a lifetime achievement award.

The media mogul Oprah Winfrey will end her daytime talk show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” in 2011 as she prepares to start a cable channel of her own.

A spokeswoman for Ms. Winfrey’s production company, Harpo, confirmed Thursday evening that Ms. Winfrey would make an announcement on her show on Friday. The plans were first reported by WABC, the ABC station in New York City.

“The sun will set on the Oprah show as its 25th season draws to a close on Sept. 9, 2011,” Tim Bennett, the president of Harpo, said in a message to affiliates.

After her broadcast talk show winds down, Ms. Winfrey will concentrate on her coming cable channel, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. OWN will have its premiere in January 2011, according to a person with knowledge of Ms. Winfrey’s decision who insisted on anonymity.

Ms. Winfrey, 55, informed her talk show staff of her decision on Thursday afternoon. The television world had expected that she would make a decision about the fate of her program by the end of the year.

Ms. Winfrey told her staffers that she will not transfer the show to cable. She is expected to produce new programs for OWN, and may appear on some of them.

In a statement, CBS Television Distribution said, “We have the greatest respect for Oprah and wish her nothing but the best in her future endeavors. We know that anything she turns her hand to will be a great success. We look forward to working with her for the next several years, and hopefully afterwards as well.”

OWN is a joint venture between her production company and Discovery Communications. Getting the channel off the ground has proved challenging amid management turnover and an uncertain advertising climate.

The timeline for OWN will theoretically give Ms. Winfrey about nine months to promote her cable channel on her existing show.

Sometimes called the Queen of Talk, Forbes estimates Ms. Winfrey’s net worth to be $2.7 billion. “The Oprah Winfrey Show” is the most successful talk show in syndication, reaching about seven million viewers a day. It has been vital to the success of ABC, whose local station group has been the primary home of the show since it started in syndication in 1986.

No surprise there. Oprah Winfrey will announce tomorrow that the Chicago-based talk show will end its run in 2011 after 25 seasons. It seems like yesterday that the talk show opened its 24th season — as it did in early September. More than 20,000 of her fans lined up alongside Michigan Avenue for the Chicago block party with the Black Eyed Peas.

She is the only African-American talk show host to make the Forbes billionaire list. She helped campaign Illinois senator Barack Obama for President of the United States last August. Obama then won the most electoral votes, thus becoming the first African-American (or black) man or woman to hold the office of Presidency. I won’t get into the details on how Oprah’s magic helped get Obama elected so please don’t ask.

What does the future hold for Oprah? And most importantly, what will become of Harpo Productions (“Harpo” is Oprah spelled backwards)? Perhaps she’ll give us hints on tomorrow’s show. Or maybe not.

It has been announced that Oprah’s talk show of 25 years will be ending on September 9,2011. Oprah has decided not to renew her contract, and so, there will be no more Oprah. I never really think about shows like this leaving the air or not being on anymore because it seems unfathomable. I’m hoping for some hope, and that Oprah will decided to extend her contract once again. A girl can only dream.

Intro and the 60s

Sweden has long tradition of making and celebrating music. Though it is nowadays well-known for its pop music, Sweden started later than other countries in Europe to listen and especially to produce such. Till the early 60s Sweden had only folk and classical musicians and although there were of course some musicians that started to make pop music like we know it today, the first band that became internationally well-known were The Spotniks in 1960. Founded as The Frazers 1958 in Gothenburg they became famous especially in Europe and later in Japan for their Twang-Sound. Though after The Beatles entered the worldwide stage in 1962 with “Love me do” their success decreased quite fast. Still they are touring nowadays through Europe and Japan reaching out to their fans. The first manager of The Spotniks Stikkan Anderson who was replaced (because he wasn’t able to make The Spotniks as successful as they wanted to be), became later the manager of the next Swedish band that made it worldwide in 1974.

ABBA & the 70s

This band became the most known Swedish act of all times: In 1974 ABBA won the Grand Prix Eurovision with their hit “Waterloo”. Several number one hits followed and according to some lists of best-selling music artists, they sold over 106,700,000 units. Although these numbers can be interpreted from different angles and their validity is not for sure, it can be safely said that ABBA’s sales belong to the to top 25 at the moment. From the available certified sales of 45,2 million the largest number of sales goes to Germany with 12.2 million sold records there. They split-up in 1982 but are still active in especially the Swedish music industry. The general opinion is that ABBA paved the way for Swedish pop bands to become internationally successful.

The chronological next Swedish hit that became well-known was released in 1976 by the artist Harpo. “Moviestar” was a number one hit in Sweden and Germany. It reached number two in Australia and number 24 in the UK. Anni-Frid Lyngstad from ABBA was one of the back-vocalists for the song. Later Harpo released some more singles that couldn’t reach the same placings but still went up to the top 25 in some European countries. Still ABBA kept on producing songs till their split-up in 1982. It took four more years for the next Swedish hit to come.

The 80s

Finally in 1986 the hard-rock band Europe succeeded worldwide with their single “The Final Countdown”. The song was a number one hit in 24 countries at the same time. A tour and an album followedand were both a big success for the band. The album was sold 6 million times during the first two years and the song “The Final Countdown”” stayed in the US charts for over 60 weeks.

In the same year Europe took over the worldwide charts the duo Roxette was founded. It took them three albums till they became known in the rest of the world by an accident. The tale says that an American student backpacking through Sweden bought the Roxette album “The Look!” before he traveled back to the US. After he arrived in his home town he gave the album to a local radio station which put the song on heavy rotation. Within a few weeks the Song “The Look” was a number one hit on the billboard charts. Without any promotion from Roxette or their label. During the next years Roxette had several top ten hits. Amongst others four number one hits in the USA. With about twelve million record sales of Look Sharp! and Joyride these albums belong to the most successful productions of that decade.

The golden 90s

After that the Swedish music export began to flourish and got more output than ever. The sales went up to a new peak during the 90s. It has to be said that the 90s were a decade where the CD finally arrived in every home and the production of an album became much faster due to higher developed equipment. Also the single CD became more popular which was tightly connected to the uprising of the one-hit wonders and the growing techno-music scene (also see here for a German example).

For Sweden’s music export nevertheless this was a golden-age. In 1992 Dr. Alban sold 11 million records of his hit “It’s My Life”,Ace of Base followed in 1993 with their hit-singles “All That She Wants” and “The Sign”. “The Sign” is also to be known as one of the top100 best selling-albums of all times. Meja scored in the same year with her hit “Happy” together with her dance group Legacy of Sound. During the next years artists like Jennifer Brown, Robyn, Emilia, The Cardigans, Alcazar, A*teens and Looptroop followed, while of course the musicians from before were not resting and still producing successful singles and albums.

It is important to mention that not only pop music was exported to other countries. The Swedish Metal music with all its sub-genres was also raising up during the end of the 90s and is nowadays an important part of the international metal scene that is as influential as never before. Bands like Therion (1988), Unleashed (1989), Opeth (1990), In Flames (1990), Nocturnal Rites (also in 1990), Amon Amarth (founded 1992 in Tumba), Hammerfall (founded 1993 in Gothenburg) and Arch Enemy (founded in 1996) are well-known all over the world amongst Metal fans.

Nowadays and Music Masterpiece of the day

In the new millenium the Swedish export hits are mainly indie rock bands like The Hives, Mando Diao or Moneybrother. I don’t want to throw in too many names but at least these artist should be mentioned: Marit Bergman, Jens Lekman, Anna Ternheim, Hakan Hellström, The Ark, Shout out Louds, Miss Li, Peter Bjorn and John, The Concretes, The Soundtrack of our Lives, Deniz Pop, Max Martin, Lykke Li and last but not least of course The Knife. You could also add Basshunter if you consider him as an artist.

So my song suggestion for today will be by my favorite Swedish artist of the moment: Timbuktu. The song “The botten is nådd” is from his same named album published in 2003. Enjoy…

Although is has to be said that the Swedish artists of the new millennium don’t reach the sales of the 90s this has to be put in relative to the worldwide decrease of record sales. More about this during the next days…

Harpo: I think you will appreciate Harpo’s “Secret Silver Box” more if you know a short biography. As well as a singer, Harpo was also a horse trainer. In 1980 he was involved in a horrible accident in which one of his favorite horses, Starter, lashed out and kicked him in the face several times. He lost his sense of smell as a result of his injuries, as well as his sight in one eye. He loved this horse so much he named his next album after the horse Starter.

What do you keep in YOUR secret silver box?

I fell in love with Harpo’s Swedish hit “Moviestar” because it reminds me of one of the things I love so much — Onnie and her Daddy’s love for her too. I soon found this song also by Harpo. As I listened to it the first time, I found tears rolling down my cheeks. I thought of so many things I love and keep in my Secret Silver Box.
