In the Democrats for McCain Office in Scranton

If you’ve been wondering where I’ve been, let me just say that my navigator has 2 different addresses for N.Main Ave. in Scranton and neither one was the one I needed.

I am at Democrats for McCain Headquarters in downtown Scranton and this place is buzzing. There are a LOT of people in this little office. We are waiting for the canvassers to return. Harriet Christian is trying to catch McCain at the airport. She and her bus posse tried to get into his rally here in Scranton earlier this afternoon but were turned away by the fire marshall. The place was overflowing.

The canvassers tell me that direct contacts are going very well but that phone banking is more difficult. Well, phone banking always sucks. It’s hard to know what to say and it’s even harder to not take it personally when someone hangs up on you.

I recognize a lot of the volunteers here from Denver. They are the die hard PUMAs who were determined that the DNC were not going to get the best of them. But the manager of this office, Carol, made her decision when Hillary suspended her campaign. Carol realized that she had to make a decision between Obama and McCain so she took a good look at the resumes of both candidates and found Obama’s lacking. She was concerned that Obama had only 142 days on the job before he decided to run for president. Carol knows that country is going to go through a very rocky period of time in the next four years and she was very concerned that Obama’s lack of experience and thin knowledge base would make it difficult for him to know how to mobilize the mechanisms of government for the benefit of the country. As a Pennsylvanian from the Scranton area, she was offended by Obama’s remarks regarding bitter small towners who cling to God and guns. Obama hasn’t reached out to the working class and the sexism really got under Carol’s skin. She decided in McCain’s favor. Then, this former Hillary supporter approached the McCain campaign and convinced them to open an office for Democrats for McCain because she felt this area of Pennsylvania would be receptive to McCain’s message.

The message that appeals to Carol has a lot to do with the local economy. This is coal country and the past decade of outsourcing has devastated local industry. She likes McCain’s message on clean coal and believes that McCain will work across the aisle to help opportunity come back to the Scranton area. She’s also concerned that Obama is making promises regarding healthcare that he can not fulfill. She doesn’t know what Obama believes. She can’t pin him down and this worries her. Carol feels she knows McCain, his character and she has confidence and trust in his ability to lead. So, Carol is a believer. She’s probably a little more conservative than the typical PUMA but she believes that the loss of Hillary in this race is a tragic loss for the country.

Harriet and Betty Jean are back from the airport. They were turned down at the rally for McCain because there wasn’t room. So they high tailed it to the airport with their signs in the hope they could see him. They saw McCain’s car drive onto the tarmac and were despondent when the car headed away from them. Then, the car abruptly turned around and John McCain leapt out of the car and he ran over to the group with a huge smile on his face. Cindy and Joe Lieberman quickly followed. Betty Jean said McCain was quicker than the Secret Service who had to run to keep up with him. McCain thanked them enthusiastically and hugged Betty Jean. It made her day.

Please keep this up. It’s time these demons are purged from the conscious of this country. We can’t do it if they stay hidden by the mainstream medias tendency to concetrate on dislplaying only black citizens in a bad light.

One of the fallacies this election season is that if Barack Obama is paying an electoral price for his skin tone, it must be because of racists.

Most of the lost votes aren’t those of dyed-in-the-wool racists. Such racists account for perhaps 10 percent of the electorate and, polling suggests, are mostly conservatives who would not vote for any Democratic presidential candidate.

Rather, most of the votes that Mr. Obama actually loses belong to well-meaning whites who believe in racial equality and have no objection to electing a black person as president — yet who discriminate unconsciously.

If you have Sirius radio and ever listen to Lynn Samuels, Samuels must be the first person who comes into your mind when you read this.

Samuels’ show on Sirius Left is barely adequate when there’s not an election going on. She loves to speak endlessly about her personal struggles, like which movie she is going to see next weekend, or which TV show she missed. She becomes very angry when people have the gall to speak Spanish in her presence.

She was a big-time supporter of Hillary Clinton. She loves Hillary. She hates Obama because he’s sexist, unexperienced and he’s no Hillary.

Fine, whatever, but she never said that John Edwards, who has spent less time in political office than Obama, was inexperienced.

For decades, experiments have shown that even many whites who earnestly believe in equal rights will recommend hiring a white job candidate more often than a person with identical credentials who is black. In the experiments, the applicant’s folder sometimes presents the person as white, sometimes as black, but everything else is the same. The white person thinks that he or she is selecting on the basis of nonracial factors like experience.

Research suggests that whites are particularly likely to discriminate against blacks when choices are not clear-cut and competing arguments are flying about — in other words, in ambiguous circumstances rather like an electoral campaign.

I don’t think people like Samuels and Harriet Christian and the folks over at No Quarter think of themselves as racist. Rather, they think they are nice tolerant people who just happen to hate Obama because he’s “not qualified.”

But if there were a white Democratic candidate with exact same experience level as Obama, I can’t imagine they would complain all that much.

“In the U.S., there’s a small percentage of people who in nationwide surveys say they won’t vote for a qualified black presidential candidate,” Professor Dovidio said. “But a bigger factor is the aversive racists, those who don’t think that they’re racist.”

Faced with a complex decision, he said, aversive racists feel doubts about a black person that they don’t feel about an identical white. “These doubts tend to be attributed not to the person’s race — because that would be racism — but deflected to other areas that can be talked about, such as lack of experience,” he added.

Of course, there are perfectly legitimate reasons to be against a particular black candidate, Mr. Obama included. Opposition to Mr. Obama is no more evidence of racism than opposition to Mr. McCain is evidence of discrimination against the elderly or against war veterans. And at times, Mr. Obama’s race helps him: it underscores his message of change, it appeals to some whites as a demonstration of their open-mindedness, and it wins him overwhelming black votes and turnout.

Overt racism still exists, but as Kristof suggests, most overt racists would not likely vote for any Democrat for president. But these covert racists trouble me. I imagine I know many of them.

It will be interesting to see how a Lynn Samuels or a Harriet Christian might react once Obama is elected (which seems increasingly likely). Will they continue to hate him for no clear and rational reason, or will they be excited that the candidate who is most closely aligned with them in term of political views won?

My guess is that for most, the former will be true.

But as Kristof mentions, they’e non-racist racism may not matter:

One lesson from this research is that racial biases are deeply embedded within us, more so than many whites believe. But another lesson, a historical one, is that we can overcome unconscious bias. That’s what happened with the decline in prejudice against Catholics after the candidacy of John F. Kennedy in 1960.

It just might happen again, this time with race.

Essentially, you are the type of person who would actually vote for George W. Bush TWICE if you believe the McCain Campaign:

1. Decided after the vetting process that Sarah Palin had a 17 year old unwed daughter that was 5 months pregnant and concluded that she was just the quality VP choice needed for him win against Barack Obama.
2. Knew that Palin’s daughters boyfriend and unborn child’s father, Levi Johnston, had a MySpace page that proclaimed he’s a redneck and “don’t want kids” and decided it was O.K. for him to keep it up and going well after the pick was made/announced.
3. Decide to (and no doubt through Sarah Palins direction ) tell Johnston to abruptly take the cite down AFTER the press finds out about it and reports on it.

Quite simply, McCain shot from the hip on this decision. The same type of hip shot that Bush did when he choose people like Michael Brown to head FEMA. Or Benard Kerik to head THE FRICKIN DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY.

McCain nor his people in NO Way knew of these issues when they chose Palin.  I DON’T CARE WHAT THEY SAY.

Republicans are the kings of steer. They are briefing their troops on how to answer questions about Palin. If they bothered vetting Palin in the first place surely they would have decided that she was just too risky a pick in a time when they needed a home run pick. Plain and simple, they did a horrible job of vetting the choice. YOU CANNOT TELL ME THERE IS NOT ANOTHER REPUBLICAN WOMAN OUT THERE THAT DOES NOT HAVE THIS KIND OF BAGGAGE WHO WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A BETTER VP CHOICE THEN PALIN!

These are the types of people we will continue to have placed in positions of the federal government that affect our very lives if John McCain is elected President.

Forget about Palin’s kids. It’s her political background that links her to the list of fools above:

• Troopergate
• Firing police chiefs because town businesses felt he was hurting their business ENFORCING THE LAW!
• Saying she’s against earmarks when her time as Mayor AND Governor was/is marked by her lobbying efforts for and receiving earmarks.
• Campaigning for and eliminating funding for teen pregnancy prevention programs and instead spouting off about “abstinence” is enough for teen pregnancy prevention.

Which brings me back to her kids.

Palin has made a political career of spouting off about how she is against abortion and funding in schools that teach teens about safe sex. It’s because of these types of stances that makes Palin’s 17 year old daughter being pregnant because she did not practice absitnence nor safe sex a ligitimate topic for voters know about while conducting their own “vetting” process in choosing who to vote for for President. The very center of the voter vetting process of John McCain now begs the question, “What was McCain Thinking?”

For some reason, Republicans refuse to understand that we are in the age of the internet. You can’t just come out with a press conference or have cronnies go on Sunday talk shows and successfully gloss over factual dirt that is reported on the internet like you could in the 90’s and earlier times. BECAUSE THERE WAS NO MYSPACE AND OTHER TYPES OF INTERNET MEDIA VENUES DURING THOSE TIMES  LIKE THERE ARE TODAY!

Is This Hillary Clinton Supporter Voting For McCain Because Barack Obama is…? You thought I was going to say it didn’t you? Well in the name of being accused of playing the race card I sure wanted to say it!

This lady has some racist leanings! Watch the second clip to see the ridiculous outburst that she displayed earlier in the year at The Democratic Rules Committee Meeting! Ms. Christian, we are not on the plantation any more, and most intelligent Blacks don’t really care who you are voting for. Obama will win, and it will irk you to no end!

I sat and watched the now legendary Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton give an amazing speech that was both loyal to the Democratic Party and sincere.  Am I sad that Senator Clinton had to do this walk of shame for another candidate that is so unworthy?  Yes.  Am I upset that, for whatever pressures were being applied to this amazing woman, she chose to reward the corrupt DNC leadership with her support instead of unsuspending her campaign after all the shenanigans with the caucuses, the primaries, the roll call vote and tell Barack to take a hike and let the chips fall where they may?  That Would Be A Big Right-E-O!  Will this wonderful speech that has overshadowed every other speaker (including her highness, Mishy) change my mind and help me fall in line, come home, and get behind Gumby?

Nope, nada, never, Nobama…..The Democratic Party’s Selected Nominee.

I do not follow party lines, I have been an Independent voter since Carter was creamed and have always voted for CHARACTER AND EXPERIENCE.  As the presidential campaigns have played out over the years, I have always voted for Democrats.

I started out this election cycle looking at everybody; the Indies, the Greens, the Dems and also the Republicans.  There has to be a reason why the Republican Party has won so many Presidential campaigns; all republicans are not as lacking as George Bush, and I have never been convinced that McCain was another George Bush until I watched Barack start acting like Bush, and then knew for sure that immaturity and foolishness are not the sole property of the Republican Party.  There has to be a good reason why Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska has a 90% approval rating and is proud to say that she is a Republican.

I was looking for character, achievement, experience and sincerity.  I found those in Senator Hillary Clinton and put my money and support behind her because I believed her when she spoke about her solutions for America.  Barack and Michelle; not so much; then again, not at all.

I know for a fact that Barack has very little in common with me.  Yes, we both went to private, college prep high schools; but I am sure that Gumby did not start working at age 13 to pay for his tuition to go to that private school and work year round just for the opportunity to receive a better education.  From that point on, Bambi and I have nothing in common.  I personally think that if Bambi actually had to work a bit harder for the gifts that he has received, he might actually be a more mature, more sincere person, with better judgement.

I will always take issue with Barack and Michelle Obama taking their children to Jeremiah Wright’s church.

I will always take issue with Barack Obama knocking his opponents off the ballot.

I will always take issue with his complete and utter lack of experience for the position of

The Leader Of The Free World.

I will always take issue with Pelosi and Obama contributing to Superdelegates that then endorsed Obama against their constituents.

As for my vote in the fall, I am with Harriet Christian on that one.

It has taken until the second day of the Democratic Convention to make some people understand that WE WILL NOT VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA.  I know, they assumed that if they ignored us, we would all just go away.

This morning Rasmussen has come out with the news that McCain has gotten a 3 point bump from Obama’s Convention.

The Democratic National Convention has begun and the poll numbers are bouncing, but not in the direction that most people anticipated.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows Barack Obama attracting 44% of the vote while John McCain also earns 44%. When “leaners” are included, it’s still tied with Obama at 46% and McCain at 46%. Yesterday, with leaners, Obama had a three-point advantage over McCain…

PRINCETON, NJ — It’s official: Barack Obama has received no bounce in voter support out of his selection of Sen. Joe Biden to be his vice presidential running mate.

Gallup Poll Daily tracking from Aug. 23-25, the first three-day period falling entirely after Obama’s Saturday morning vice presidential announcement, shows 46% of national registered voters backing John McCain and 44% supporting Obama, not appreciably different from the previous week’s standing for both candidates. This is the first time since Obama clinched the nomination in early June, though, that McCain has held any kind of advantage over Obama in Gallup Poll Daily tracking.

Anyone want to lay bets on how bad Obama’s numbers are going to be by the time he supposedly receives his coronation at Invesco Field?

I wonder what Barack Obama’s real polling numbers are, since historically he always polls higher than reality.

According to Roland Martin, Democrats are dumb and the DNC should have squashed the opposition.  How do you squash the voices of 52% of the Democratic Party?  Fully half of the Democratic Party has been telling the DNC leadership that they would not fall in line, would not come home, would NOT VOTE for Barack Obama  for months and now everybody is surprised that we are doing just that?

We all know the disgraceful video of Harriet Christian, the infamous New Yorker (whose vote DID count) with the 5-packs-a-day voice, who comdemned the Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting for their ruling. It’s a video that became the underlying message of the entire procession. A video that became the slogan for the rest of Hillary’s campaign in some eyes.

“.. and for what.. an inadequate, black male!”

Most of Americans who viewed the video shook their heads in disgust, understanding the gravity of what Harriet’s hatred of Barack had brought out. It was a disgraceful moment for Democrats. A moment when we all realized that we still had people like “that” in our party. A party who has tried to STAND UP for civil rights and equality.

I wondered for a moment, would Harriet still be so upset if Senator Obama weren’t so “exotic.” It was the first time in my adult life that I was ashamed to be a Democrat. I cried during the committee meeting, hoping for some sign of unity. But all I found was Harold Ickes, feeding the angry mob, when it was HE who voted to strip FL and MI delegations in the first place!

But none of that mattered anymore. Nobody, including Harriet, cared about that glaring fact. All they care for was that someone was just as mad as they. What Harold Ickes did that day, was instill some great HOPE for PUMA voters that Senator Hillary Clinton would bring the party crashing to their knees, causing the presumptive Republican nominee, John McCain, to cake walk right into the White House with his admitted soft grasp on economy.

But who is the other man in the video, walking ahead and to the side, and stopping Christian in her path, egging her on, letting her speak? Well, that person is the spokesperson for PUMA, Will Bowers of course! And he is HAPPY that Harriet spoke her hateful words. As taken from his Huffington Post article:

…In fact, I have a confession to make. It was I who encouraged Harriet to stay and to face the cameras. Each time she wanted to storm from the lobby in a fiery exeunt, it was I who stopped her, consoled her, turned her around, and told her “Your anger needs to be heard, friend. Don’t stop.”

Did I think that she could have been more coherent at first? Yes, I did. Did I feel that she was flirting with the edge of reason? Yes, I did. Would I have had her change a thing? No, I wouldn’t.

Can we really call Will a Democrat when he was applauding Harriet during a time when all REAL Democrats were hanging their hands and protesting her hatred?

This is the person supporting PUMA on FOX news! Calling himself a Democrat! Saying he is a Hillary supporter, yet going against every standing Hillary has.

NO, we cannot.

This is a man who genuinly never really cared about the Democratic Party to begin with. It makes you wonder if Harriet and her pal Will weren’t just republicans there to sabotage the thing to begin with. It makes you wonder if Will isn’t just trying to muster up another form of the “Swift boat veterans for truth,” the coalition that sank John Kerry during the ‘04 election. It makes you wonder…. doesn’t it….
