The race is on Dubai.

The Flyers’ west coast roadtrip will take van Riemsdyk, who leads all rookies in points-per-game, west of Kansas for the first time in his 20 years. (NHL)

For those that like to mark a prospect’s name on the list well before their draft year, take note of London Knights defenseman Scott Harrington. The 16-year-old has five points in 16 games with Dale Hunter’s Knights, and is quickly earning the trust of his teammates, playing upwards of 25 minutes a game. If they haven’t gotten a good enough look in the OHL, scouts will get a good look at him when he represents Team Ontario at the U-17’s, much to the happiness of his agent Darren Ferris, who committed to be the team’s mascot had his player not made the squad.
Morgan Harrington a 20 year old Virginia Tech college student, went missing after a Metallica rock c

Morgan Harrington a 20 year old Virginia Tech college student, went missing after a Metallica rock concert in Virgina a week ago and now her parents have put up $150K for her return and Metallica is offering $5oK and helping the FBI in their search for her. On Oct 17th she was separated from her friends at John Paul Jones Arena and has been missing since. No one knows if something happened to her on that day or where she is. She has not tried to contact anyone.

Her family, Gil & Dan, parents are reaching out to her (maybe) abductors but why would they do that? They don’t know she was abducted? The FBI is searching for the girl. Police ask anyone with information to call 434-352-3467.

I got questions and I’m going into what usually happens to me in cases like this – remote viewingl. Here goes my attempt at what may have happened to Morgan. Also there is a video FBI investigators are studying of the last time they may have seen Morgan on videotape outside the stadium with 3 men aggressively leading her away.

Then her brother says an odd thing -”Morgan is too special for anyone to kill her. They would want to keep her around.” Odd yeah?

Morgan’s parents are offering $150K, Metallica is offering $50K and CrimeStoppers is offering $100K – that’s $300K for this girl who is so special. What makes her so special?

In several reports she left to go to the bathroom before the concert and then got locked out of the show and couldn’t get back in. Another report has her waiting outside with no mention of a car and that she had gone to the concert with her g/fs. Then her purse is found between the parking lot and the jock field of play – along with her cell phone with a missing battery? Why is that missing – for gps or location purposes? Did she not know how to put her phone on vibrate during the show? If the battery was removed why did she leave the cell phone?

I think her g/f are covering for her. She went down to the front to meet a guy that she had met or knew already from school. They argued about something and he took her. She’s still alive and her brother said that weird thing about NO ONE WILL KILL HER BECAUSE SHE’S SPECIAL. WHAT MAKES HER SPECIAL? Her parents seem to have money. The brother was not given a name in any of the articles and how would he know someone took her? There is approximately $300K floating around b/t Metallica, Crimestoppers and now the family offering money for her return. She had an unusual relationship with her parents especially her father.

Her brother may have been jealous that the sister got all the attention; maybe he needed money for school or something and kidnapped his sister knowing that she is so special to the parents that they would do and pay anything to get her back.

I don’t see that she’s dead but she is hiding with a man, someone her brother knows. I can’t see a predator, not sure that this is the case. I think Morgan is in on it with her brother and this other man who is maybe her lover or her brothers.

That’s what I can see right now. Let’s see how right I am in a few days when I think they will find her.

It has been days since anyone has seen or heard from Morgan Dana Harrington, the 20-year old Virginia Tech student went missing during a Metallica concert at the University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville, Va. on Oct. 17.

On Friday, Oct 23 however, Dan Harrington received a phone call from Metallica who said they were increasing the reward to $150,000.

Harrington and her friends arrived at the UVA on Saturday for the Metallica concert, the opening act, Lamb of God, took the stage at 7pm and according to police, some time before 8:40pm Harrington stepped outside and was denied re-entry under the venues policy.
Harrington was going to return home to visit her family in Roanoke, Va. after the concert and on Sunday when she never showed up her parents reported her missing.

As proponents of federal insurance regulation continue to invoke the collapse of American Internatio

As proponents of federal insurance regulation continue to invoke the collapse of American International Group (AIG) as evidence of the significant risk posed by insurers to financial system, Scott E. Harrington, a professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania offered a contrary perspective to reporters and congressional staffers at a Capitol Hill briefing Tuesday.

Harrington is the Alan B. Miller Professor in the Health Care Management and Insurance and Risk Management departments at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and the author of a recent report, ?The Financial Crisis, Systemic Risk, and the Future of Insurance Regulation? published by the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies.

?What happened in the past year shouldn?t be a factor? in the debate over whether to establish optional or mandatory federal chartering of insurance companies, Harrington said, since AIG?s problems cannot be attributed to any alleged defects in the current system of insurance regulation. Instead, said Harrington, numerous federal regulatory agencies in the U.S. and Europe had authority over AIG and the units that caused its collapse, but those regulators were ?asleep at the switch,? failing not only to properly assess the riskiness of AIG?s credit default swap portfolio, but also the degree to which regulated commercial and investment banks were over-exposed to the risk that AIG might be unable to meet its obligations to counterparties.

In the report, Harrington identifies the factors leading up to the worldwide financial collapse of September 2008, plainly explaining what was and wasn’t to blame for the crisis. The analysis digs deep into the role of AIG and credit default swaps in bringing down the economy and the federal oversight that allowed it to happen. In addition, Harrington examines the idea of designating certain institutions as ?systemically significant,? as the Obama Administration proposes to do by classifying certain institutions, including insurers, as so-called ?Tier 1 Financial Holding Companies? that would be subject to special oversight by a new systemic risk regulator.

?If you designate certain insurance companies as systemically significant you might as well yell from the rooftops that they will be bailed out and they are ?too big to fail?? Harrington said. Even with the more stringent regulation and increased capital standards promised by the federal government, Harrington said that investors and consumers would know that they would be made whole by the government in the event of an insolvency of a systemically significant company, giving those companies a distinct competitive advantage.

Each year, NAMIC publishes an issue analysis examining a significant public policy issue involving risk management and insurance. Through these studies, NAMIC seeks to elevate public discourse, inform policymakers and improve the functioning of insurance markets for consumers, insurers and taxpayers.

?Financial services regulatory reform will be one of the main issues debated in Congress for the remainder of this year,? said Jimi Grande, senior vice president of federal and political affairs for NAMIC. ?We?re glad Prof. Harrington was able to provide his insight and hope that it will guide policymakers as they craft financial regulatory reform legislation.?

So I guess its already been three days, which is hard to believe because its gone so incredibly fast

So I guess its already been three days, which is hard to believe because its gone so incredibly fast, and we’ve had such incredibly long days. But yes, I am in London. As I type I am listening to the BBC broadcast for the Arsenal-Celtic game (I won’t spoil it for those of you poor unfortunates on a time difference but lets just say there are no surprises) and I’ve found a good pub for the big game this weekend. That’s pretty much heaven.

I got in early, early, early Monday morning. The flight actually was ahead of schedule, so we landed around 6am. I had also been able to watch In The Loop, that British movie about the American/British decision to invade Iraq-hilarious! and Sunshine Cleaning. I then, unable to find the group flight, lugged my 91.7 lbs of suitcases down to the train station, on the train, to the cab, to the dorm, around the dorm, down to the main office at Harrington Gardens, and all the way back. Apparently, for all the huge signs in Boston, the London branch is trying to be subtle. The dorm is nice and, what’s the word Real Estate Agents use…cozy? Getting here first means I get the bottom bunk and pick of the closet. I have a theoretical roommate Irene, but she won’t be getting here until next week, once I figure out what to do with all my stuff.

We got a tour of the place, basically the four or five blocks immediately surrounding us, by our RAs. Just to name a few things we passed: Three museums including the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert; Hyde Park and a Boots! Can you tell I am quite excited? Other than that, despite my hype, the day was pretty quiet. The first grocery shop stop was because I wanted to shower and found myself without a towel. The second was some basic food stuffs, with a more complete shop hopefully later this week. We also went out on Monday for a necessary pub stop as it was our first day. Jackie and Alexis, who live on my floor, both tried traditional English beers including a famous one called Speckled Hen. The pub itself is right around the corner, a very classic old pub called the Hoop and Toy.

Tuesday was the day of orientations. We went down to the central building on Harrington Gardens and met with the program coordinator, Sarah and Kate, our teaching assistant. They were very nice though it was a lot about safety that seemed a bit unnecessary to repeat. But they fed us, which was important, before another orientation, this one through Student Life. This involved another round of safety speech, this time done by the very funny Michael Oliver, our SL coordinator, who exemplifies British humor. He apparently made all the RAs scout all the good places to hang out/party/drink, etc. and then give us a report at this meeting, so we are very well informed. After this, the SED students had tea with another Brit, the head honcho of the BU program Robert Cummings, which was a fun experience and let us see more of the building, which is a redone 19th century house.

After the official stuff was over, I went out with my fellow history education majors, Lisa and Melissa, to do some serious touristing. We took the Tube to the Temple, went through to see the famous Temple only to be denied entry, then past St. Paul’s around the Thames to Westminster and Big Ben, oggling the Eye along the way. We didn’t really go in anywhere but it was just to get a sense of really being in the city and getting a nice walk in. Later that night a large group went to the pub associated with Imperial College where there are student prices. None of the Unis are in session yet so it was a little empty, but still a lot of fun. I think there were more stops after that, but I was still so jet-lagged I though I’d try to get more sleep in last night.

Today was what I hope is our final “orientation.” We went down to Roehampton University, which is a federation of the four oldest teaching colleges in London (and possibly UK) and where we will be studying when we are not student teaching. There was a basic introduction to our courses and schedule with Mike and Abdullah who will be our main professors/contacts there. Abdullah also gave us a grand tour of the campus, and let us into one of the archives (I had a lot of trouble containing my excitement, but luckily there were enough other people interested to that my twitching was only a minor cause for concern.) After that we went to a store near the Hammerstead Tube called Primark’s that is a lot like HM-very cheap and very cute. I demand props for being the only person not to break down and buy something unnecessary, as its only been five days and I think shopping can only go uphill from here. We went to a really cheap (but only so-so) Chinese buffet for dinner called the Paper Tiger. It came with a lot of good recommendations but one of the things I appreciate most about Chinese is leftovers, which this clearly didn’t have. Then the Arsenal game and now I’m going to try to turn in early for the early morning I have tomorrow.

Ta ta.

The Outsider caught up with Huskie Football Head Coach Brian Towriss last week and talked to him abo

The Outsider caught up with Huskie Football Head Coach Brian Towriss last week and talked to him about the coaching staff for 2009. He confirmed a few changes and spoke about the staff in general. Doug Humbert, who helped with defensive backs and the defensive show team last year has been promoted to Special Teams Coordinator. Cal Hobbs, who coached defensive line will be taking a year off to spend more time with his family. Dan Houle, who played fullback for the team last season, has been brought on as an Intern and will work with running backs and the offensive show team.

We’ll breakdown the coaching staff in two parts, starting with the offense.

Coach Towriss is heading into his 26th year with the Huskies. He has an all-time record of 157-85-1 including a 9-2 record in national bowl games. Towriss was on University sabbatical from December 1, 2008 until August 1 of this year. While he spent some time in the office, he used his sabbatical to recharge and spent many hours looking at how CFL and NCAA teams run their programs, design their plays and terminology, and how they run their practices. He is very excited for the 2009 season.

Bart Arnold, entering his 19th year with the team, will continue to coach the offensive line. Arnold is also the respected strength and conditioning coach. Towriss said that Arnold did great job in the off-season designing the core workouts for the team. Towriss expects the hard work that Arnold and the players put into the off-season to pay off late into the 2009 campaign.

Travis Serke will coach the offensive line as well. He is back for his 13th season. Serke has loads of experience as a player and as a coach. Towriss says that he is great teacher and the players really respond to him. Serke and Arnold have consistently been amongst the top offensive line coaches in the country.

Running back coach Mike Harrington has 23 years of experience. Towriss says that Harrington is a great Xs and Os guy. Harrington sits upstairs during the games and has great insight into what the opposition defense is doing. Harrington also handles all of the administrative details on the football side.

Brent Schneider, Offensive Coordinator and quarterback coach, returns for his 13th season. He has worked with the offensive coaches to introduce a number of new wrinkles in the offense for the 2009 season. Towriss says that Schneider was one of the great quarterbacks in Huskies history and has a great relationship with the players that he coaches.

Jason Sulz is back for his seventh year as receivers coach. Sulz ran the recruiting details this off-season and can be credited with landing a number of blue-chip recruits, Towriss said. Sulz assists Schneider in game-day prep, often working late in to the night scouting the upcoming opponent.

Dan Houle, who graduated from the team last season, will assist with running backs (focusing on fullbacks) and the offensive show team. Houle was a team leader last season and he is expected to expand his leadership traits, Towriss said. The show team coach is an important role as it allows the Huskies defense to practice against offensive plays that the next opponent will run.

With a veteran core of coaches and players returning on offense, the Huskies will be running some new plays and adding some new wrinkles to the core plays that have kept them near the top of the CanadaWest for many years.

We will be back in a few hours with the defense and special teams coaching update. Stay tuned.
