There are those moments in life when only a mom will do. Like when your boyfriend breaks up with you

There are those moments in life when only a mom will do. Like when your boyfriend breaks up with you, or you failed a really important test, or when you moved 500 miles away from home. I’m sure everyone, at one point or another, has felt this way. Even if you and your mom don’t see eye to eye, you wish you could go to her or have her hold you and say everything is going to be okay.

About two weeks ago I was feeling really homesick. I had just gotten off of Skype with my family. Seeing them over the computer and knowing that I couldn’t see them in person made it really hard for me. My niece was with my parents and acting as cute as ever. She doesn’t quite get what we’re doing on the computer but she does know that she can see herself on the screen. So the whole time we’re talking with her she’s making funny faces at us. After we got off the computer I started to really miss them. I was wishing I could hold my niece while she told me funny stories from school or sit at the kitchen table with my parents chatting over a cup of coffee and dessert. It hit me then just how far away were from each other. So when I found out my mom had made plans to visit me this past weekend I was thrilled. It was so great having her here to see her and talk to her in person. We didn’t anything too exciting, it was fun just knowing she was here. We did the usual girlie stuff, like shopping, pedicures and massages. We also went out to eat several times, got coffee at Port City Java, watched a movie, went to church Sunday morning and took a long, brisk walk on the beach. When Monday finally rolled around I knew she was going back home that day. I was bummed to have to drop her off at the airport. We had a really fun time and I’m happy she was able to visit for a few days. I’m looking forward to going home for Christmas to see the whole family.

It’s been a while since my last post and I have no reasonable excuse to offer other than the standard ‘been busy’ line, so I’ll spare you! Thought a quick update on what’s been going on around here might be in order:

We’ve begun the process of looking for the right Co-Packer to do a commercial run of Hoover’s Sauce this Winter. It’s an arduous process and there’s LOTS of opinions and possibilities out there, so I sure would appreciate any advice or experience that readers might have with or about co-packers! Heck, then I’ll need to ride that distribution learning curve too…so once again, any help….much obliged!

We’re actively working on a complete re-vamp of the menu for 2010 and so far have been having fun with concepts and test recipes…more news to come on the ‘10 menu soon!

Still putting together plans to open a walk-up/concession location in early Spring, financing (as always) is the issue these days! We have now included an “Investors” page on the website (www.GreatQ4U.com) which following initial conversations to insure sincerity and commitment, folks interested in being a part of GreatQ4U! will have a chance to take a detailed look at the plans and the numbers. If it all makes sense for them, we’ll offer a package that offers the opportunity to earn a substantial return on your investment. All the while investingating traditional financing options as well.

Keeping the smokers burning! We’ve got test recipes, competitions and lots to do in the coming months, so we keep the Hickory and Apple burning!

So, that’s all I have to say about that! It’s APPLE SEASON…take the family to Adams County, PA this weekend and pick up LOTS of apples! – jak

I know, the following is just a form letter in the modern age… but it’s good to get acknowledged. Plus, we already know that Senator Wayne Fontata reads his mail (thanks to the idiots at Clean Water Action)!

While at the Sheetz website, I discovered a sweet little link at the bottom that enables you to fire off an email to your local politicians to let them know that you’re in support of Sheetz being allowed to sell beer in its stores. Juts click the Take Action button and it writes the letter for you, and sends it to your State Senator & State Representative. How awesome is that?

It’s 2009 and PA’s beer & liquor laws are beyond antiquated, end of story.

Subject: Re: Freedom to Purchase Beer in Convenience Stores

Mr. Carroll ~

Thank you for contacting me recently regarding your interest in seeing beer available at more locations.

As you are probably aware, there has been great deal of discussion on this issue – both in the positive and negative. I agree with you that our laws are antiquated, but believe that we are slowly seeing change – both in new law and in legislation that is being considered. This remains one of those issues that we will need to continue to work on to address the concerns that have been raised. I have noted your support for this effort, and will certainly share it with my colleagues and take it into consideration should we have the opportunity to vote on related legislation.

Again, thank you for your communication. I look forward to further communication with you on this and other issues that are of interest and importance to you.

The Honorable Wayne Fontana
Pennsylvania Senate
Senate Box 203042
Harrisburg, PA 17120-3042

Dear Senator Fontana:

As a Pennsylvania voter, I want to add my name to the growing list of
those who are asking you to consider making a change to Pennsylvania’s
beer laws.

It is hard to ignore how backward our beer laws are in light of the recent
ruling by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court against Sheetz – taking its
license, because it did not allow for on-premise consumption.

At their worst, these laws encourage drinking and driving. At the very
least, the current laws are incredibly outdated.

Let me be clear. I want to be able to purchase alcoholic beverages in
convenience and grocery stores. Please support the call for common sense
beer laws and bring the convenient purchase of beer to the Pennsylvania
consumer.

Sincerely,

Eric Carroll

The first round of the high school football playoffs in Arkansas begin this Friday night, and 20 teams from NEA have made the playoff party. Here’s a look at the playoff outlooks for several local teams.

Four NEA teams get first round playoff byes thanks to their successful regular seasons. They include: West Memphis (10-0), Jonesboro (9-1), Rivercrest (8-2), and McCrory (10-0). The Blue Devils will start playoff action next week against the winner of Pine Bluff and Mountain Home, while the Hurricane will most likely face Watson Chapel in round two at home.

Several NEA teams will get to host first round games on Friday night. The 4A-3 champion Osceola (8-1-1) will host Huntsville from the northwest, Newport (5-5) will play Stuttgart at home, and Gosnell (7-3) will host DeQueen. The other two playoff teams from the 4A-3 will have to go on the road. Valley View (6-4) will travel west to face Gravette and Trumann (4-6) will pay a visit to Dover.

In the 5A-East, conference champion Forrest City (8-2) will get standout Michael Dyer and Little Rock Christian at home, while the conference’s No. 2 seed West Helena (6-4) will host Pulaski Academy. The other two teams in the playoffs from the 5A will have to make long distance trips, with GCT (8-2) traveling to Magnolia and Blytheville (4-5-1) going up against the top seed from the Southwest Division in Camden Fairview.

Three teams from the 3A-3 will be in action this Friday night. Harrisburg (9-1) will host Jessieville, while Cave City (9-1) goes on the road to face Yellville-Summit. The Cavemen already have a non-conference victory to their credit over Yellville-Summit earlier this season. The conference’s fourth seed Earle (7-3) will have a tough draw as they visit Rison.

In the 2A-3, Augusta is the lone local team hosting a playoff game this Friday, as Strong will travel north to take on the Red Devils. Meanwhile, Walnut Ridge (7-3) will travel to Woodlawn, and Cross County will visit Conway Christian in a battle of teams that go by CC.

Check back on the blog this weekend for updates on which NEA teams survive and advance to round two.

The Odom Political Report is extremely pleased to present our guest blog for October and November 20

The Odom Political Report is extremely pleased to present our guest blog for October and November 2009. The article was written by the Rev. Martin D. Odom, Senior Pastor, Bethel Village A.M.E. Church, Harrisburg, PA, and Apostle Brenda M. Alton, Pastor, Kingdom Embassy Church of Harrisburg, PA and the President of the Interdenominational Ministers Conference. Bloggers Note: Not since 1791 (218 years ago) has there been so much upheaval in Harrisburg the Capital of Pennsylvania. On Tuesday, November 3, 2009 the citizens of Harrisburg elected not only their first female mayor, but the first African-American as well. Mayor-elect Linda Thompson’s electoral success is due in part to her dynamic community-wide message of social encouragement, and desire for a better quality of life for all its citizens. Mayor-elect Thompson received the collective support of the African-American community, and the spiritual encouragement to go forth with her campaign against the odds from Harrisburg’s black ministers. Those actions spoke volumes about her past and future leadership abilities. The Harrisburg Ministers Conference electrified their respective congregations under the theme, “More Souls To The Polls.” Generally speaking political operatives know that theme is a universal one, and has been used for at least the last two decades by national grass-roots organizations to give meaning to the final goal which is of course, election day. The “Get Out The Vote or GOTV” effort means mobilize and go into action. That simple message is an appropriate one for unifying the electorate during the final days of a well-managed campaign. The dynamic and courageous group of ministers of Harrisburg, PA should be commended by all for wisely using their right to fair speech (aka) “First Amendment Rights” to encourage the community to vote.

As intelligent (thinking) individuals we should recognize that their support should in no way be considered or construed as an official church endorsement for the former Mayoral candidate. (Calling for change from the status quo is one thing, but having the leadership and guts to pursue real change is unique. – R. M. Odom, November 2009.)

The Odom Political Report is pleased to present the following article for your review and comment.

Our society is ever changing and evolving. We have come through the Industrial Revolution, the Great Society, the Transportation Age, the Baby Boom, and we are currently in what some have termed the Information Age. Information is readily available at our fingertips with the press of a button. We can search engine someone’s name and find out all sorts of information about them. This information may be positive or negative, accurate or inaccurate, celebratory or hurtful.

The sad reality is that this age of information has also ushered another more potentially ominous age, the age of anonymity. Anonymity is a two edged sword. Its’ redeeming factors include the ability of two people to meet on the internet and get to know one another without ever having to meet in person. The myriad dating sites that abound in cyberspace are evidence of the success of these ventures. That same anonymity can be disastrous when one of those people is a teenager and the other is a predator masquerading as a teenager.

A more recent example of the potential pitfalls of anonymity is the recent election we experienced in the city of Harrisburg. Anonymity provided people on both sides the opportunity to launch a continuous stream of accusations and attacks under the mask of an anonymous user name. It is one thing to make a hateful comment and attribute your name to that comment. It is something altogether different to issue a continual barrage of attacks on a person’s character, family, and or personal life, without the risk of having your name attached to that statement. Most newspapers today will not print letters to the editor that come from anonymous sources, but the internet has made it possible to post vitriolic statements to newspaper sponsored web sites with no personal attribution. Such is life in the age of anonymity.

One of the dangers of the age of anonymity is that the ability to say the same thing over and over again, whether accurate or not tends to lend credibility to the statement. It is potentially hazardous when mainline news organizations begin to treat anonymous accusations with the same level of seriousness as they do those which come from sources which reveal their identities. Journalists have always had the right to protect the identity of their sources and many have suffered to protect that right. One case that comes to mind is the Watergate Scandal of the 1970’s in which two reporters from the Washington Post kept their source of information so secret that his identity was only recently revealed.

The right of journalists to protect the identity of their sources should remain intact. However, our society has drifted into a different place when rather than protecting the identity of their sources, journalist no longer know the identity of their sources. When reporters begin to follow up on anonymous accusations as though they are true then their reporting is compromised. This is not the protection of sources or the freedom of the press, this is a shallow replacement for real investigative work that informs the public and benefits society. Moreover, if this type of source attribution is to become the standard practice then there ought to be a benchmark that says that all anonymous accusations will be pursued about each candidate and with the same vigor. In this most recent election we do not believe that standard was always met.

Our society thrives on encouraging the most talented and integrous people we can find to run for office. We ask these people to make tremendous investments of time, finances, and emotional energy, and to reveal themselves in ways that most of us would feel uncomfortable. In the age of anonymity, however we are not only asking these people to defend themselves for past transgressions, mistakes, or bad choices, but against anonymous and potentially untrue accusations. We are asking candidates to defend themselves against an enemy whom they cannot see, and who is allowed to make unlimited attacks no matter the credulity. People who want to have it both ways by making accusations no matter how ridiculous and posting them anonymously for the world to see. Seldom have so few had the potential to do so much damage to so many.

Ultimately, the responsibility does not fall to candidates for elective office, or even to newspapers, editorial boards, or other media outlets. It falls to each of us to decide how we conduct ourselves in the age of anonymity. Whether we succumb to the temptation to post a negative comment and hide behind our screen name, or to express ourselves in the coliseum of public opinion in a way that does service to ourselves, our fellow citizens and our society.

Rev. Martin D. Odom is the Pastor of the Bethel Village AME Church of Harrisburg, PA and Political Action Chair of the Interdenominational Ministers Conference.

Apostle Brenda M. Alton is the pastor the Kingdom Embassy Church of Harrisburg, PA and the President of the Interdenominational Ministers Conference.

The furniture has been moved in. The pictures have been hung on the walls. The refrigerator is now re-stocked. Although everything I moved here is my own and I had it at my last place, everything is so unfamiliar now. It’s weird how that happens. You look at the same things every day, year after year, but move them to a different house and they somehow look different. It’s going to take me a little while to get used to everything, even though just about everything is an improvement. In PA I lived in a one-bedroom apartment while here I live in a 3-bedroom, 2 1/2 bath townhouse. In PA my apartment was quite literally 100 years old while here it’s a mere 30. I also didn’t have a dishwasher, washing machine, or dryer in PA, all of which I have in my “new” place. The town here, in my humble opinion, is also an upgrade. The people here have tried their best to preserve the heritage of the city and have done so successfully. There are numerous mansions, museums, and gardens to visit that all reflect the era the town was built out of. The people here are also a lot more gracious than in PA. And, it’s something you may not even notice until you move south. I didn’t think people were rude up north but when I came here I realized that we do have an “edge” about us. People aren’t as willing to help someone out if it’s going to take any time out of their days.

But despite all the “improvements”, it doesn’t yet feel like home. Home was sitting on the front porch of my old apartment, sipping coffee and having a good conversation with my husband. Home was going to my parents house on the weekend and looking forward to my mom’s roast beef dinner, with mashed potatoes and gravy. Home was going to City Island and walking across the bridge where my now husband proposed to me. There are so many memories that I have of Harrisburg. That’s were I was raised and had considered home for so many years. I now have to go out on my own, with my husband, and create our own traditions. I know it will be a growing experience for the both of us and something that we need to do. It will just take some getting used to. So instead of the Walnut Street Bridge in Harrisburg, I have Riverwalk here. It was the place where I walked in June and new that I loved the town. It was so beautiful the way the sun reflected off of the water in contrast to the huge battleship that was just across the way. And at night it was even more stunning, with lights on the palm trees lining the Cape Fear River.

So maybe instead of losing something, I am gaining new memories and experiences. I know that I’ll always have a place back in PA to go to and I also have a new home here.

Why are the traffic lights so out of sync on the ramps from 581 West towards 15 South? Over the last several days traffic has backed up on the ramps due to being stopped at a red light while no traffic is coming on 15 South from Camp Hill. This should be an easy fix for the traffic backing up into the expressway.
