Nel 1928, quando Charlie Chaplin( 1889-1977) iniziava a lavorare su City lights, il sonoro era ormai affermato, ma il regista dubitava della nuova tecnica:da qui la tormentata gestazione del film, che, tra ripensamenti vari e il perfezionismo maniacale dell’autore, durò tre anni ; alla fine venne presentato come muto con commento musicale aggiunto e gag sonore inserite ad irrisorio sberleffo, come nella scena iniziale:in città si inaugura un nuovo monumento e le vacue parole delle autorità sono sostituite da assoli di kazoo; il vagabondo Charlot(Chaplin) che vi si era addormentato sopra, viene allontanato; ad un angolo di strada incontra una giovane fioraia cieca(Virginia Cherrill) e con l’ ultima moneta le compra un fiore; la donna sente sbattere la portiera di un auto e lo scambia per un uomo ricco; è notte, Charlot incontra un milionario ubriaco(Harry Myers) che sta per suicidarsi, lo salva e questi lo invita a casa sua e poi al night; la sua generosità è presente solo da ebbro, al mattino, sobrio, non ricorda più nulla e lo caccia via; nel frattempo con i suoi soldi Charlot aveva comprato l’intero cesto di fiori dalla fioraia, accompagnandola a casa con la sua vettura; dopo un ricevimento, il milionario parte per l’Europa e Charlot per poter continuare ad aiutare la ragazza, trova lavoro come netturbino e poi come boxeur in incontri truccati; dopo tragicomiche vicende, ritorna il milionario, che, brillo, gli dona mille dollari; per un equivoco Charlot è arrestato per furto, ma non prima di aver consegnato la somma alla ragazza, così potrà pagare l’affitto e l’operazione che le ridarà la vista; uscito di prigione, la ritrova guarita e proprietaria di un negozio di fiori; lei lo riconoscerà quando gli prenderà la mano per donargli un fiore e fargli l’elemosina.
Definito da Chaplin stesso, autore del soggetto e della sceneggiatura, “commedia romantica in pantomima”, il film è un perfetto melange tra comico e tragico, stemperati con toni poetici, i quali sono esaltati dall’assenza del dialogo, coerentemente con lo stile dell’autore; esprime inoltre con rara efficacia la bellezza e la durezza della vita, la spietata ed incerta danza delle apparenze coreografata dalle convenzioni sociali, con uno sguardo sulla triste realtà dell’epoca(la Grande Depressione); da leggenda del cinema il finale:i brevi, efficaci, primi piani sugli sguardi tra Charlot e la fioraia evidenziano nel primo sentimento ed emozioni trattenute, mentre gli occhi della ragazza esprimono dapprima divertimento alla vista del povero omino, poi,una volta riconosciutolo, divengono tumidi comprendendo tutti i suoi sacrifici ,esprimendo se non amore almeno riconoscenza, che, in fondo, è quanto il vagabondo si aspettava, sublimando l’amore in un gesto di generosità, come sottolinea il suo sorriso con cui il film si conclude, che si piega verso una triste consapevolezza .

Inutile de rappeler que Chaplin et son double à l’écran, Charlot (The tramp dans les pays anglo-saxons), appartiennent à la mémoire collective du 7ème art. Inutile aussi de souligner que Chaplin a réussit le tour de force de lier l’exigence cinématographique avec le succès populaire (et ils sont peu nombreux, le seul autre exemple me venant directement en tête étant Hitchcock). De tout cela nous ne parlerons pas ici. J’ai revu hier Les lumières de la ville pour la première fois depuis très longtemps. J’en avais un souvenir confus, seules quelques scènes surgissaient de ma mémoire. Mais le sentiment global, lui, était fabuleux.

Charlot erre (comme à son habitude) dans les rues. Il croise une jeune femme (Virginia Cherrill, qui fut mariée un temps à Cary Grant) d’une vingtaine d’années qui vend des fleurs. Il s’aperçoit rapidement qu’elle est aveugle. Celle-ci croit d’après ce qu’elle entend (prodige quand on se rappelle qu’on est en présence d’un film muet) que cet homme est une personne aisée, quiproquo dû à une voiture stationnée juste à côté d’eux. Charlot n’ose la contredire. Le soir vient, sur les berges du fleuve il sauve un homme (Harry Myers) de bonne condition du suicide. Se disant guérit celui-ci considère désormais son sauveur comme son ami pour la vie. Il l’invite chez lui, puis lui propose une “tournée des grands-ducs”. Seulement, le millionnaire a la fâcheuse tendance, une fois sobre, à ne plus reconnaître son nouvel ami. Entre temps, Charlot aura tout de même eut l’opportunité de retrouver la jeune femme aveugle, de lui acheter toutes ses fleurs avec l’argent que son camarade aviné lui a donné, et de la ramener chez elle à bord de la luxueuse voiture de ce dernier. Tout ceci concourt à vraiment faire croire à la richesse de Charlot. Notre tramp vivote au gré de ses retrouvailles avec son ami (uniquement quand il est ivre) et décide de faire tout ce qui est en son possible pour aider la jeune fille aux fleurs à ne pas être expulsée de l’appartement qu’elle occupe avec sa grand-mère et pour lui payer une opération qui lui permettrait de voir à nouveau.

City Lights est le film de Chaplin ou rires et poésie sont à leur paroxysme. Tourné en presque trois ans, il était le film de tous les dangers pour son auteur. En effet, l’arrivée du parlant constituait un défi de taille. De plus, beaucoup des émotions qu’il cherchait à transmettre étaient orales (le comble !). A l’arrivée, ce fut un véritable succès que Chaplin confirmera avec son film suivant, Les temps modernes, toujours muet. Les situations comiques des Lumières de la ville sont très réussies (le restaurant, le club de boxe) et l’émotion que dégage la relation qui se noue entre Charlot et la jeune femme, de leur rencontre jusqu’au dénouement, est d’une réelle portée poétique. Universel.

– The Tramp

From my experience of watching Nosferatu, I watched Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights in the daytime to not fall asleep. That wouldn’t matter, because this movie had me hooked on the story.

This movie was mentioned on the Cinebanter podcast a while ago. Being eager to expand my movie watching into different genres, I wanted to see this movie. It is currently #62 of Top 250 of All Time on IMDb.

The story told in pantomime is about The Tramp (Charlie Chaplin) meeting a girl (Virginia Cherrill) selling flowers on the street. It turns out that she is blind. He tries to help her and her grandmother (Florence Lee) during a lean time.

The Tramp befriends an eccentric millionaire (Harry Myers) that tries to kill himself when his wife leaves him. Whenever he is drunk, he is friendly to The Tramp. When he sobers up, he doesn’t know The Tramp.

The Tramp tries to get some money to help the blind girl.

Judgment: This is a beautiful film that will make you tear up. A must see!

As one of the highest accomplishments of Chaplin’s career, City Lights remains a poignant reminder of the power of romance, silence, and misconceptions. Working as his own producer and distributor as part owner of United Artists, Chaplin was able to bring City Lights out as a silent picture even though talkies were already all the rage. Not an entirely silent piece, Chaplin’s movie includes portions of sound including some rather hilarious garbled sounds that mock voice patterns.

Placing City Lights in the context of its release in the Great Depression gives the motion picture even more power. Here is a movie that skewers the concept of the wealthy, with the drunken millionaire and the garbled speech of politicians serving as amusing contempt of what Chaplin thought of film dialogue and upper class nonsense. But even in our modern context, Chaplin’s ideas translate wonderfully and City Lights remains a magical film worth seeing several times.

The movie centers around Chaplin’s Tramp character, an individual built not on speaking like the characters of Buster Keaton but rather a character built on action. Indeed, the Tramp could be considered more of a mime with the use of body language substituting for the use of dialogue. His actions and facial expressions do far more than most modern performers and characters could ever wish to do with hours of monologue.

City Lights furthers the Tramp character, whose search for refuge continues to be one of his major motivations. The opening sequence finds him asleep on statues waiting to be dedicated. When the protective sheet is removed, there he is and a sequence of glorious physical comedy commences with Tramp attempting to politely make an exit. And so it is with Chaplin’s familiar character: he is an outsider, homeless and broke without a place to go.

The Tramp eventually talks a drunken millionaire (Harry Myers) out of suicide. The millionaire recognizes the Tramp as a good friend when he is under the influence, but does not recognize him and considers him street trash when he is sober. This makes for some interesting situations, to say the least. There is also a flower girl (Virginia Cherrill) and she is blind. She is the object of the Tramp’s affections and she returns the affection, under the impression that he is a millionaire thanks to a suit Tramp borrowed from his drunken millionaire pal.

This, of course, leads to many interesting situations and the Tramp desperately wants to help the blind girl. She is behind on her rent, so he begins to work a series of small jobs to help scrape together enough money. He works as a street sweeper and even enters a boxing contest. Fortuitously, the inebriated millionaire shows up at just the right moment and offers the Tramp enough money to help the girl. Unluckily, the millionaire sobers up and believes himself to have been robbed by the homeless bugger. And so it goes.

The beauty of City Lights lies not just in this tortuous tale of comic misfortune but in the acts of self-sacrifice that the Tramp makes for a girl that cannot see him and does not know what his reality is. When the Tramp is eventually released from prison, he comes upon the blind girl who can now see thanks to the money the Tramp was able to give her. The moment of realization, of recognition, is one of the most powerful and poignant moments in film history.

Whether for great comedic sequences, such as the famed prize fighting segment or the Tramp’s attempts to save the millionaire from drowning, or for moments of sheer emotional poetry, it’s hard to top City Lights. There are even some subtler coarse moments, such as when the Tramp works as a street sweeper and ducks some horses only to encounter a parade of elephants. The joke is clear and so is Chaplin’s gift. It’s a shame that the silent films of Chaplin and other great performers of his era are so rarely shown and so rarely seen by those in the younger generation. Today’s modern comics owe a lot to Chaplin and, indeed, so does today’s modern film in general.

L’amore. Questo film descrive e racconta l’amore come solo “Nuovo cinema paradiso” e pochi altri riescono a fare. Come premessa faccio un forte applauso a Ies Tv (emittente locale di Roma) che mi ha permesso di poter vedere questo splendido capolavoro e di colmare quindi una mia grave lacuna cinematografica. E’ cinema muto, è Charlie Chaplin. E’ quindi musica, musica (e che musica!) ininterrotta per tutto il film per non far sentire il vuoto lasciato dall’assenza del “parlato”. I dialoghi vengono mostrati a schermo, anche se ne vengono mostrati molto pochi in relazione alla loro quantità totale. E’ una pellicola del 1931, non ci si riesce a credere guardandola. Storia molto semplice, per questo ancora più bella. Il vagabondo interpretato da Charlie Chaplin si innamora di una donna, che però è cieca. Intanto, riuscirà a salvare un ricco miliardario depresso dal suicidio, diventando in alcuni momenti suo amico. E’ incredibile a dirsi, ma è un film abbastanza attuale, e lo è poichè l’amore è senza tempo, è sempre attuale. Dura 87 minuti, 87 minuti che scorrono ad una velocità impressionante. Quando si vede la parola “fine” si pensa inevitabilmente: “Ma come, è già finito?”. Sarà che ormai siamo abituati a pellicole che durano almeno due ore, ma in realtà questo pensiero scatta per quanto bene è raccontata la vicenda. In molte scene si hanno le lacrime agli occhi, e la cosa impressionante è che non si capisce se esse si formano per le risate o la commozione generata dal film. Sì, perchè “Luci della città” riesce ad amalgare perfettamente queste due componenti. Dicevo della semplicità, una qualità che io, e lo ripeto per l’ennesima volta, ritengo fondamentale per la riuscita di un buon film. Non c’è bisogno di grandi mezzi tecnologici per emozionarsi, basta vedere una ragazza con uno splendido sorriso che raccoglie un fiore e lo porge all’uomo a cui è caduto, basta vedere la stessa ragazza che con la mano accarezza il viso dello stesso uomo, basta vedere due occhi felici… Ci si emoziona tanto, e si ride tantissimo con questa pellicola. Le situazioni comiche non mancano di certo: basti pensare all’inizio del film, oppure alla scena in cui Charlie Chaplin salva il miliardario dal suicidio o a quella in cui viene accusato di aver rapinato la sua casa. “Luci della città” è una perla della cinematografia, una di quelle che non viene mai ricordata abbastanza. E qui verrà inevitabilmente fuori il mio lato nostalgico, ma questo film è sicuramente migliore di molte pellicole di oggi. Considerando che le pellicole di oggi hanno l’audio nei dialoghi, vengono girate con mezzi più sofisticati e chi più ne ha più ne metta, si evince che questo “Luci della città” è un Capolavoro con la C maiuscola. Entra di diritto nella classifica dei miei film preferiti, e lo consiglio davvero a tutti.
