Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: Harry Potter serisinin son filmi. Diğer filmlerinden daha kasvetli bir ortamı var. Artık film daha fazla gençlere ve yetişkinlere hitap ediyor. Kitapta da bu gelişmeler görünüyordu. Ancak bu filmde bir sorun var, Melez Prens kitabını okumamış olanlar senaryoyu kesinlikle parça parça görecektir. Ben kitabı 2 kere okudum. Ve filmi izlerken parçaları kafamdaki kitaptan alıntılarla birleştiriyordum. Kitaptaki çoğu önemli bölümde bulunmuyor. Bu filme en etkili yorum şu olur;

Matchstick Men: İlgi çekici bir senaryo. Herşeyden önce süprizlerin filmi. 2 dolandırıcı kafadarın hikayesi. Film sadece sonu için izlenmeli diyebilirim. Genelinde biraz sıkıcı, ama sonlara doğru herşey değişiyor. Nicholas Cage’in iyi oyunculuğunun bir başka örneği.

Destere: Açıkça söylüyorumki VA-KİT-KAY-BI… VAKİT KAYBI! Bir Ege şivesidir gidiyor filmdeki, ilk “ışık açma” muhabbetinde film rengini belli ediyor. Tam anlamıyla saçma bir senaryo, Saw, ülkemizde bilinen adıyla Testere filminin parodisi olacağım derken saçmalık oluyor, sonuç hüsran. Filmin sonu ise ayrı bir hayal kırıklığı, sonuna bakılırsa 2. si çıkacak… Çıkmasın korkuyoruz.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs: Ice Age serisinin 3. filmi ki her filmde gerçekten işlerini iyi yapıyorlar. Başarılı bir senaryo başırılı bir akıcılık var filmde. Sonuç olarakta başarılı bir yapım. İzlenmeli.

Güneşi Gördüm: Mahsun Kırmızıgül’ün 2. yönetmenlik koltuğuna oturuşu. Doğudan gelen bir ailenin yaşadığı sorunlar. Kendiside doğulu olduğu için meseleyi saf bir biçimde senaryoya aktarabilmiş oradaki olan olayları görmüş birinin elinden geçmiş film. Türk sineması yeni ve başarılı bir yönetmen kazanmış gibi. Film doğulu halkın yaşadığı sorunları ve onların şehire göç etmelerinden sonra yaşadıkları güçlükleri yansıtıyor, aynı zamanda daha bir çok önem taşıyan konulara değiniyor. Beyaz Melek’i beğenenler, bunu da oldukça beğenecektir.

Angels and Demons: The Da Vinci Code (Da Vincinin Şifresi) adlı filmdeki Tom karakteri bu filmdede karşımıza çıkıyor. Bu sefer mesele direk Vatikan’la. Vatikan’daki entrikaları konu alıyor ancak filmin sonu anlatılan yüksek ihtimalle gerçek olan olayları Vatikan’la bir sorun çıkmaması adına tatlıya bağlar gibi. Yine de Da Vinc’nin Şifresi’nde olduğu gibi filmi ağır bir şekilde eleştirenlerde var. Bence film iki arada kalmış ve yanlış olanı yapmış. Ya bu olaylar var filmde anlatıyoruz diyeceksin ya da hiç böyle bir film yapmayacaksın. Sonunu tatlıya bağlayıp işi kıvırmaya çalışmak amatörce olmuş bence. Ancak işlenen konu enteresan, film izlenmeli sonu ciddiye alınmamalı.

Türkler Çıldırmış Olmalı: Sinemada izlediğim tek filmdi ki 1 saat evvel AFM Sinemaları’nda izledim. Birazda film ve yer bulamama sonunda seçtiğimiz bir filmdi. Neşeli Hayat’tan daha çok komedi üzerine olacağını düşünmüştük en azından. Somali’de kaçırılan zengin bir iş adamını kurtarmak için hapisten adam seçmek oldukça saçma geldi bana. İş adamının yaşamasını şansa bırakır gibi olmuş. Genel olarak senaryodan çok birşey beklememek gerek. Komik olmak için zorlanmış gibi geldi bana. Kabile Şaman’ının Türk çıkması gibi çok eneteresan durumlar mevcut. En komik sahne ise sorgu sahnesi tabii ki. Sonunuda pek beğenmiş değilim ama gerek sinemadakilerin, gerek arkadaşların gazıyla güldük az buçuk. Filmin bütçeside ortalama bir Türk filminden daha fazla olmalı. Fena değil yinede.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the 6th movie in the Harry Potter series based on J.K. Rowling’s book of the same name. It was directed by David Yates and stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Julie Walters, David Thewlis and Jim Broadbent.

[SPOILERS for the WHOLE SERIES after this point.]

Plot:
Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is in his sixth year at Hogwarts (school for wizadry). He finds a mysterious book that belonged to the half-blood prince and the notes in it help him star in Prof. Slughorn’s (Jim Broadbent) potion class. At the same time he works together with Prof. Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) to find out more about Lord Voldemort and his weaknesses.

The Half-Blood Prince is definitely the weakest of all the Potter movies so far. The plot’s all over the place, things happen you can only understand if you’ve read the books and HOLY SHIT! they spoil the seventh book/movie. What the hell?

I don’t think I’ve said it here, but if I did, I’ll gladly say it again: David Yates is the worst thing that could have happened to this series and that he gets to do the last four films is even more of a catastrophe. He can’t pace his stories, he can’t even manage to have one constant plot. Instead, his plot is all over the place. Watching the Half-Blood Prince is like watching an ADD bunny: “Oh, I gotta tell you about this it’s so interesting and then oh shit I need to tell you this first and have you seen this and what was I talking about? yeah right there’s this thing I gotta tell you but first have a piece of cake and by the way the whole point of the thing is and yeah so the story…”

It’s unbelievably annoying. And it leads to massive spoilers.

I can live with the fact that they completely butchered the whole Tonks-Lupine thing (no courtship, no nothing, just a “honey” all of a sudden?) because, okay, while I love their story, it’s not really a central one.

But why, why would you go ahead and completely spoil the seventh book/movie and the whole Snape thing? What purpose could that serve?

And all the relationship stuff was so badly done, I really wished Mike Newell would come back. Because he knows how to handle that.

Well. Apart from that, it was fine. The acting’s good, the supporting cast is great and the special effects were well done.

So, summarising: it definitely is the weakest movie so far and it makes me afraid of what the last two will be like but it didn’t put me off watching the rest (I don’t think that anything could).

Seguramente el fenómeno en que se ha convertido Crepúsculo (Twilight) y lo que ya se espera como una larga lista de secuelas, alimentará muchos debates como estos. Las comunidades de fans de ambas historias ya se  alistan para lo que se prevé como la controversia de fin de año.  Así  que como toda buena plática de café, hay que empezar con una pregunta disparadora: ¿es mejor Harry Potter que Crepúsculo?

La respuesta – como casi cualquiera que tenga que ver con estos temas- es relativa. A los fans de uno y otro lado les parece que no hay nada comparable – de hecho: ¡por eso son fans!- mientras que para los detractores  de cada uno, son la peor porquería que han visto o leído.

Pero afortunadamente, todo debate supera la barrera ideológica y subjetiva gracias a los datos duros.  Y en esos términos, hoy por hoy  ambos fenómenos se pueden medir desde dos diferentes ámbitos: los libros y las películas.

En el caso de los libros, Harry Potter se anota un tanto. En la lista británica de los 100 libros que definen la década, el número uno se lo lleva el último libro de la Saga de Rowling: Harry Potter y las reliquias de la muerte (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). El segundo lugar es para el libro de Barack Obama,Los sueños de mi padre ( Dreams from my father); y en tercero El Código Da Vinci de Dan Brown (Da Vinci Code).

Crepúsculo ( Twilight) no aparece en la lista hasta por ahí del número 32. Y en realidad de esta lista podríamos decir muchas cosas, ya que efectivamente no se trata de una evaluación literaria sino mercadológica.  Y la manera más lógica de intepretar el dato, es diciendo que  Harry Potter vendió más en su último libro que lo que lleva vendido Crepúsculo. ¿Pudiera ser entonces sólo cuestión de tiempo?

Pero en el caso del cine y la taquilla el triunfo se lo lleva Crepúsculo, empatando con ello la competencia. Luna Nueva ( New Moon)  establece un nuevo récord de apertura a la medianoche, con 26,27 millones dólares de 3.514 salas de cine sólo en Estados Unidos. Ello supera los estrenos de Harry Potter y el príncipe mestizo ($ 22,2 millones) y The Dark Knight ($ 18,4 millones).

Es claro que el enemigo a vencer no es ya Harry Potter sino Batman: un fenómeno de taquilla inusual y sorpendente. Y aquí tampoco el asunto tiene que ver con cuál película es mejor, porque no se basa en críticas cinematográficas, sino en dinero recaudado.

La pregunta que sugiere toda esta comparación es: ¿porqué se vende más un libro que una película? o a la inversa: ¿porqué un libro medianamente vendido se vuelve una adaptación cinematográfica tan exitosa?

Pero antes de responder eso hay que cerrar diciendo  que  Rowling tiene una mejor técnica literaria que Meyer. Es mejor escritora por decirlo así. Pero Meyer tiene muy bien medida su audiencia y es claro que la apuesta es hacia el cine, porque los adolescentes de ahora son más visuales.  Y no hay que olvidar que J.K Rowling está en la lista de las mujeres más ricas del mundo…. ¿Cómo ven entonces? ¿Empate técnico?

Chapter 2: Spinner’s End – Reread

I said it before and I’ll say it again, Snape is not the bad guy. There is more to this pact with Narcissa and Bellatrix than meets the eye, and while I’m sure we won’t find out the extent of the situation until Book 7, I’m convinced Snape will turn out to be good in the end.

Same goes for Draco, while we’re at it.

People keep asking me why I’m so committed to this idea that Draco and Snape will be vindicated by the end of the story. Maybe it’s pity? Maybe it’s my inability to accept that these fascinating characters could actually be bad. But maybe, it’s really my refusal to see any of the characters in this series as that two-dimensional. Snape and Draco being evil is too easy for J.K.

This may all come back to bite me in the ass. Point taken. But I’ve come to terms with making absurd predictions that turn out to be completely and utterly off the mark. I’ll risk it for the chance to REALLY be right about something BIG!
 

Chapter 3: Will and Won’t – Reread

Kreacher is at Hogwarts. Right! That’s a fact that completely slipped my mind over the course of reading (or not reading) this book. Harry owns Grimmauld Place, so he owns Kreacher. I blew past this fact last time, so let’s talk about it for a minute.

This can go two ways: 1) Kreacher will go the way of Cho and vanish into the pages or 2) He’ll stir up trouble. I’d prefer the first, but I fear the latter. Maybe it would be too easy for this drastically annoying character to disappear. Or maybe it would be too much for him to stick around. We’ll see, I guess. Or I’ll see – you all already know…

In other news, the fact that the first children to read the Harry Potter series are currently in college or just finishing up is very evident in this article from the BBC. While the idea of Oxford University actually changing the name of a common room to Gryffindor seems ridiculous, even from a complete fangirl standpoint, it’s interesting to see the impact the series has had on a generation of children follow them into adulthood.

My junior or senior year of college, a new class entitled “Harry Potter: Blessing or Blasphemy” started. The series wasn’t even complete yet, and already the administration felt that the material was pertinent enough to merit collegiate study and of interest to a college audience.

I don’t care how much you love Twilight, show me the college classes that form around THAT thing. I’ll wait here…

So yesterday’s class was really nerve-racking.  Not to mention, the lack of sleep resulted my drowsiness at school.  We had two quizzes: one for Development Communication and one for Basic Economics.  Anyway, it is our first quiz for those subjects in the second semester.  It was great, I’m confident that I’m gonna pass. The quiz in Basic Economics was quite cool!  It is more on essay rather than a plain identification and enumeration.

After the class, I, together with my friends headed to SM Lipa to eat and perhaps, shop.  When we passed by Astroplus DVD and CD shop, I was shocked when I found out that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is already on sale.  I thought the release date is set on December 7, 2009.  Anyway, the DVD imported costs Php 750, the Special DVD edition costs Php 850!  So expensive.  I could not afford it at the moment.  So I decided to buy the VCD edition for 299 pesos.  At least I could add that to my collection of the first five Harry Potter films in VCD.

It comes in a beautiful packaging with a slide up box.

Hello, blogosphere!

Let me take a moment to reintroduce myself: My name is Jess, I am the Last Muggle to Read Harry Potter, and for those of you who have been checking back here over the past few weeks and wondering where the hell I went, you just received first-hand proof of WHY I’m the Last Muggle to Read Harry Potter – I’m an insanely, absurdly, almost comically busy person. Life is what happens when you’re trying to read the Harry Potter series, I guess.

That said, the show I was directing has closed (it went really well!) and the December show I’m working on hasn’t quite kicked up yet, meaning I actually have the time to read again!

So just like “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named”, I’m back and causing trouble.

But it’s been so long! How can I possibly expect to keep the plot twists of Book 6 straight after such a signficant absence?

I can’t.

That is why I am starting Book 6 over.

Yes, for the next few days, I will be REREADING Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Dun-dun-dun!

Let’s be fair – this is the book a bunch of people told me was their favorite. I would be doing an injustice to this whole project if I tried to jump back into things where I left off. Quickly skimming through the chapters leading up to Katie Bell’s unfortunate meeting with a cursed necklace is the best way to handle this.

In the interest of not being absurdly repetitive, I hope I can find something different to comment about as I make my way through this for the second time. And who knows? Maybe I’ll actually figure out where this thing is going if I go back and read it again.

That said…

CHAPTER 1: THE OTHER MINISTER (reread)

I had completely forgotten about Scrimgeour. See, there’s a benefit to going back. He’s probably (probably? yeah, probably) pretty important, being the whole “New Minister of Magic” and everything. Just gonna throw that out there.

Interesting nuance I noticed this time around: the Prime Minister recalls how Fudge asked permission to import three foreign dragons for the Triwizard Tournament. Was the fourth dragon already in the country? I’m sure this was covered, but I disregarded it as completely unimportant to the overall plot. Or maybe Fudge didn’t ask permission to import the fourth one. Then again, he really didn’t ask permission in the first place.

I just thought that was interesting. Important? Eh, probably not. But interesting nonetheless.

Welcome back!

The magical day is here. HPHBP is here to be owned and I was down at the local shop, forcing the staff to locate the DVD’s in the storeroom. But seriously, I was there at eleven and they open at nine. Lazy buggers. Then two and a half hours of fun, horror and magic as Harry Potter(who now is at the age of shaving) fight the dark side.

Nice surprises: (Warning: Spoilers)

Daniel Radcliffe has become a real comedian. Hurray! But he does attend the best acting school in the world making these movies. His co-workers/teachers are amongst the best in the business. Imelda Staunton, Gary Oldman, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Julie Walters, Timothy Spall, Ralph Fiennes and now Jim Broadbent, just to name a few.

Hogwarts has never looked better. David Yates delivers. So glad to finally have a steady director for the films. For a while I thought the position as Harry Potter-director was jinxed, like the Defence against the Dark Arts-teachers at Hogwarts.

Draco Malfoy in his black suit and shiny shoes. A worthy antagonist for the young hero. Tom Felton gets to show more than just obnoxiousness(Is that a word? I’ll have to look it up).

Jim Broadbent, one of Britain’s greatest character actors, as Horace Slughorn, the keeper of an important memory.

Michael Gambon’s final performance as Dumbledore is a real treat. A lot of hardcore fans has been very disappointed with the choice of replacing Richard Harris with Michael Gambon after Harris’ death in 2002, but I think Gambon is wonderful.

In the extra features you get the funny, touching and very honest documentary about JK Rowling. It was shown on television last year, I think, but it stands a fair bit of re-watching, so it’s great to have it on DVD. She’s really amazing and don’t make any excuses for her writing. She writes it the way she wants it, and that’s how it should be. I really admire her for that.

Also in features: Tom Felton(Draco Malfoy) asks his fellow actors questions so we get to know them a bit better. Amusing. And Matt Lewis(Neville Longbottom) hosts a tour of the film making departments together with Alfie Enoch(Dean Thomas). They should become sports announcers or something, if they consider giving up acting of course. I really hope they don’t. They’re very talented and funny.

Bad Surprises:

There really wasn’t any. But I am constantly surprised about the attitude of some people when it comes to the Harry Potter-series(books and movies). Some folk, who claim themselves to be open minded and unprejudice, still manage to show a condescending disbelief when I say I enjoy Harry Potter very much. So what if I studied both film and literature at university, does that mean I’m only allowed to read James Joyce and watch important movies like The bicycle thief? Isn’t laughter and imagination even more important? It sure makes me happier. By the way, Harry Potter is pretty dark and frightening with a lot of references to the madness that goes on in our own world. And just beacuse it’s a fantasy world doesn’t mean the people in it don’t have human feelings and weaknesses. It deals with common subjects such as trust, courage and loyalty. Growing up and making choices. But I’ve decided to give up trying to make people realise that Harry Potter is not just for kids. They had to make an adult edition of the books for heavens sake! It just ticks me off that some grown-ups I know are so… grown up. In the worst way. Rant over. Time for pics. This is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince:

Interesting characters. Luna is about as good as it gets. And that’s plenty good!

The Back-story. The Dark Lord in the making. The child actor Hero Fiennes-Tiffin is hauntingly perfect for the part.

Fun. Unless you have been doped up by a love-potion.

This is the best movie yet, I think. All right, Gary Oldman isn’t in it (I shouldn’t mention that I have a Sirius Black-action figure, but I do), but still, it’s so funny, fast, warm, smart and scary that the hours just fly by. I don’t think I will be able to watch anything else this entire week.

Во-первых, в книге “Гарри Поттер и Принц-полукровка” сюжет был более понятен. Сценам из жизни лорда Волан де Морта и диалогам между Гарри и Альбусом Дамблдором уделяется намного больше времени. Для меня остается загадка, почему же режиссеры так мало внимания уделили самому главному?

Во-вторых, мало спец-эффектов. Да, может вначале разрушение моста и выглядит очень красочно, но затем “Гарри Поттер и Принц-полукровка” становится заполненным лишь компьютерной графикой. Я имею в виду, что остальные фильмы, как правило, компенсируют недостатки сюжета умопомрачительными боевыми сценами с сопровождением взрывов и т.д. А в “Гарри Поттер и Принц-полукровка” такого просто быть не может. Ведь преимущества книги в развитии очень интересного сюжета…

Настоятельно рекомендую сначала прочитать “Гарри Поттер и Принц-полукровка“, иначе можете не ухватить смысл данной части.

Во-первых, в книге “Гарри Поттер и Принц-полукровка” сюжет был более понятен. Сценам из жизни лорда Волан де Морта и диалогам между Гарри и Альбусом Дамблдором уделяется намного больше времени. Для меня остается загадка, почему же режиссеры так мало внимания уделили самому главному?

Во-вторых, мало спец-эффектов. Да, может вначале разрушение моста и выглядит очень красочно, но затем “Гарри Поттер и Принц-полукровка” становится заполненным лишь компьютерной графикой. Я имею в виду, что остальные фильмы, как правило, компенсируют недостатки сюжета умопомрачительными боевыми сценами с сопровождением взрывов и т.д. А в “Гарри Поттер и Принц-полукровка” такого просто быть не может. Ведь преимущества книги в развитии очень интересного сюжета…

Настоятельно рекомендую сначала прочитать “Гарри Поттер и Принц-полукровка“, иначе можете не ухватить смысл данной части.

A SCOTS knitwear company has had to almost double its staff to cope with a new order of school uniforms – for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Lochaven International, based in Ayrshire, have supplied the iconic school uniforms for the Harry Potter film series since 2001, and have just finished producing 400 garments for the sixth instalment of the series.

However a 25,000-fold surge in internet traffic has meant that the firm have now had to bolster their staffing levels, after online Harry Potter fans found out that the movie’s woolly garments were made in Scotland.

Since then they have been bombarded with orders for Hogwarts outfits, and have had to double in size to cope with the demand as work has commenced on uniforms for the smash series’ dramatic final instalment.

Managing director Keith Murray said: “The order book is completely full, and we’re jam-packed with work.

“Even if you take Harry Potter out of the equation we’re working at full capacity.”

With garment production at the company’s mill pushed to the limit, Lochaven plans to bolster its staff to 40.

The firm produced 400 lambswool cardigans, jumpers and tanktops for the boy wizard’s most recent screen outing – Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – which smashed worldwide box-office records.

In addition to outfitting Potter, Weasley and company, the firm has also been in negotiations with Warner Brothers to supply clothes for a new Harry Potter theme park.

Potter fans at the park, which is due to open in Florida next year, would be able to buy Scots-made woolen uniforms of Hogwarts four school houses – Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin.

Managing director Keith Murray added that he hoped that the company would gain valuable promotion from the move.

Don’t you have to be high to read the book if you are an adult? I don’t know, but that is one franchise that I have never really gotten behind. It just isn’t for me and that is fine. J.K. Rawling is a genius and all good graces that fall her way are well earned.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe today ‘categorically’ denied he had smoked a cannabis joint at a party after pictures emerged of him allegedly using the drug.

The 20-year-old actor was pictured on the front page of a tabloid newspaper allegedly smoking a cannabis joint at a party in North London.

But the film star said he had not smoked anything other than tobacco.

A spokeswoman for Radcliffe said: ‘Daniel does smoke the occasional roll-up cigarette, but he was not doing anything more than this.’

‘We are considering our position and will be taking all necessary action in relation to such allegations.’

That is a decent defense for now.  The problem is that others might come out of the woodwork to say that they smoked with him, or other potentially plausible, or true stories.

The accusation came as shock to fans and could well have land him in trouble with bosses in charge of the family friendly Harry Potter franchise.

The pictures were taken by Wadia Tazi, a fellow guest at the party, held at a high-rise in Camden.

Memo to self, “Never invite this attention seeking whore to any parties!” Other people should feel free to do the same.  Ultimately, this is like the Michael Phelps story, which is to classify this as a non-story.  Famous person got hight at a party, is like saying that water is wet.

‘At one point, a girl dragged him away, saying: ‘”come on Daniel, follow me. You don’t trust me, do you?” She pulled him into the toilet and started drawing a huge comedy beard on his face,’ Tazi is reported to have told the newspaper.

The scandal comes just four months after Radcliffe’s co-star Jamie Waylett admitted  that he cultivated ten cannabis plants.

The 19-year-old, who plays Hogwarts bully Vincent Crabbe, escaped a spell behind bars and was instead ordered to do 120 hours of unpaid work.

Radcliffe’s role as the schoolboy wizard made him a multi-millionaire and household name at the age of 12.

The price of fame is high.  If all he does is smoke some herb, then he is in good shape.  Don’t move to the sauce or blow, and you will be okay.  Also, this is a warning to watch who you associate with, since they will not have your best interest at heart.

Twilight & True Blood Set To Rule People’s Choice Awards

Vampires are set to rule the upcoming People’s Choice Awards – with blockbuster fantasy film franchise Twilight and blood-sucking U.S. TV series True Blood leading the nominations.

The public cast more than 18 million votes online to select the nominees for next year’s ceremony, and will also choose the winners in 35 categories.

The Twilight Saga will compete against Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Star Trek in the favourite movie and favourite film franchise categories.

Stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner have earned nods for best on-screen team, joining fellow nominees Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds (The Proposal), Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) and Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, will.i.am, Dominic Monaghan and Daniel Henney (X-Men Origins: Wolverine).

Pattinson and Stewart were also nominated individually for favourite movie actress and actor, and will face-off against A-listers Brad Pitt, Hugh Jackman, Johnny Depp, Ryan Reynolds, Anne Hathaway, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock in their respective categories.

Lautner is also up for breakout movie actor alongside Chris Pine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sam Worthington and Zachary Quinto.

Meanwhile, True Blood was nominated for favourite TV obsession and favourite sci-fi/fantasy TV show, where it will battle for the title against The Vampire Diaries, Heroes, Lost and Supernatural.

The show’s star Anna Paquin will fight it out with Blake Lively, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Katherine Heigl and Mariska Hargitay for favourite TV drama actress – while Hugh Laurie, Kiefer Sutherland, Mark Harmon, Matthew Fox and Patrick Dempsey compete for the title of favourite TV drama actor.

Musically, newcomers Adam Lambert, Demi Lovato, Kris Allen, Lady Gaga and reality TV star Susan Boyle will battle for favourite breakout music artist.

Eminem, Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Keith Urban and Tim McGraw will go head-to-head for the favourite male artist accolade, while their female counterparts include: Beyonce, Britney Spears, Carrie Underwood, Pink and Taylor Swift.

Queen Latifah will host the People’s Choice Awards at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre on 6 January, 2010.

SYNOPSIS

Emboldened by the return of Lord Voldemort, the Death Eaters are wreaking havoc in both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that new dangers may lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. He needs Harry to help him uncover a vital key to unlocking Voldemort’s defenses–critical information known only to Hogwarts’ former Potions Professor, Horace Slughorn. With that in mind, Dumbledore manipulates his old colleague into returning to his previous post with promises of more money, a bigger office…and the chance to teach the famous Harry Potter.

Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Not to credit the films over the books, especially this last film (which I’m already noticing was a ridiculously poor adaptation of the text), but the cursing of Katie Bell stands out as a remarkably memorable image from the movie. I remember it striking me as horribly violent and unsettling for a kid’s book. Keep in mind, until I started reading, I was convinced this series was for children. Silly, silly Muggle.

So finally getting to the moment where Katie Bell took flight was both satisfying (because I could link it with a moment I clearly remembered from the film) and unnerving (because I realized moreso from the reading exactly what her cursing implies, and how close she got to going the way of Cedric Diggory).

Book 6 is dark. I’m not telling any of you Harry Potter fans anything new, but as someone approaching it for the first time, it’s amazingly darker than Book 5, which shocked me for somehow being darker than Book 4. I respect J.K. for her twisted vision. The violence encountered by school children and teenagers is honestly twisted. But then, isn’t all the best literature a little off kilter?

Before I get into “Who sent the Necklace?”, I want to talk about Tonks for a minute. I love Tonks. I loved Tonks in Book 5. I continue to love Tonks in Book 6. But to be honest, she was one of those characters I didn’t expect to see much of in Half-Blood Prince – while she clearly hadn’t played herself to the fullest in Order of the Phoenix, I didn’t anticipate too much from her this time around. I figured she’d come into play somewhere along the line, mostly because she was too interesting to disappear after one battle at the Ministry. Still, I didn’t anticipate she’d have such a mysterious role this time around. Something is up with Tonks. Something is not right. How did she just-so-happen to appear at Hogsmede right when Harry was confronting Mundungus (who may not have been the bad guy of Book 5, as I previously predicted, but still remains an ass)? That’s just a little too convenient to dismiss. I’m sorry. If reading these books has taught me anything, it’s to never dismiss something that is just too good to be true.

Tonks doesn’t join the dark side, does she?

Yes, I keep wanting to apply Star Wars terminology to this series. And no, I don’t even like Star Wars.

I hope Tonks doesn’t go bad. But oh man, that would be a fantastic plot twist if she did…

Anyway, I’m rambling. The necklace! Who sent the necklace?

I honestly do not think it was Draco. Ignoring my inexplicable adoration for the little blonde twit, I just don’t think he’s that clever. Someone is trying to kill Dumbledore. Obviously. Part of me wants to think that Snape sent it in order to keep Draco from having to kill Dumbledore on his own, but that would run counter my argument that Snape only kills Dumbledore because he made the unbreakable vow to step-in if Draco is unable to complete the deed himself. Actually, come to think of it, I bet Narcissa sent it. A desperate mother will go to desperate measures to protect her cub. Or is that giving Narcissa too much credit? Maybe Bellatrix sent it, because she’s batshit crazy. I could see where she wouldn’t want Draco to steal her thunder and kill Dumbledore, when such an act would put him in high favor with Voldemort (for whom she harbors a massive people crush). But that seems too cunning for Bellatrix.

My vote is with Narcissa. That would make sense, thematically. The series seems very focused on mothers making sacrifices for their children – or failing to do so. Harry’s mother dies for her son, Voldemort’s mother dies in spite of her son. Why not have Narcissa step up to the plate?

This brings me to my favorite quote of Chapter 12, when Dumbledore points out to Harry that yes, Voldemort’s mother had a choice not to die in order to be there for her son – but Harry’s mother had the choice, as well.

Ouch.

So, Tuesday I’m going to the dollar theater in Birmingham to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I’ve already seen this movie in theaters, and it was awesome, but I haven’t seen it in theaters and it only cost me a dollar yet.

The thing is, I’ve never been to the dollar theater. It sounds really, really sketchy to me. Then again, I’m pretty much the least-brave person in the country.  So there’s that.

Actually, that isn’t so true.  The other day we were gallivanting around the scary parts of downtown Birmingham around midnight and I was totally unafraid. Of course, I used to do that in Montgomery on a regular basis, since I worked in a baseball stadium in downtown Montgomery and didn’t get off work until after midnight on occasion.

Anyways, I will keep you updated on this adventure. Maybe. There’s always the off chance that I’ll get strangled in the dark theater or something.  (I promise to actually tell you if this theater is safe or not. This isn’t going to be like the mythical Phil Campbell post.)
