Een van de zaken die ons belemmeren bij het in het hier en nu leven, is het koesteren van wrok. Wrok is altijd gericht op het verleden en op een ander: een ander heeft ons, naar onze mening, iets ‘aangedaan’. Dit troebleert onze omgang met deze persoon, maar óók onze omgang met onszelf en met onze omgeving. We hebben namelijk ons hart een stukje gesloten. Met de term ‘hart’ bedoel ik het vermogen om ons liefdevol open te stellen voor onze omgeving en ons leven. Dit vermogen stelt ons in staat om actueel te zijn, om situaties te benaderen vanuit hoe zij werkelijk zijn, onbeladen door vroegere ervaringen.

In een van de boeken van Inayat Khan kwam ik een oefening tegen om het door wrok gesloten hart weer te openen. De oefening bestaat uit het ’s ochtend en ’s avonds aandachtig opzeggen van de volgende zin: ‘Mijn bedachtzaam zelf, verwijt niemand iets, draag geen grief met je mee tegen iemand, koester wrok tegen niemand, wees wijs, verdraagzaam, kies, beleefd en vriendelijk tegen allen.’ Herhaal deze tekst elke keer een aantal maal en doe deze oefening gedurende langere tijd, bijvoorbeeld een maand.

Mijn eigen ervaringen met deze oefening zijn positief. Ik heb de oefening eerder dit jaar gedurende twee maanden gedaan en had er veel baat bij. Terwijl ik deze zin reciteerde, voelde ik mijn hart ontspannen en oude grieven, waarvan ik de inhoud en oorzaak niet eens meer kende, van mij afglijden. Oude koek, niet meer relevant! Wat ik ook merkte, was dat ik me meer bewust werd van momenten dat er toch weer een klein wrokje m’n hart insloop. Door op zo’n moment deze zin te herhalen (hardop of in gedachten), lukte het me geregeld om boven dat chagrijn uit te stijgen, zodat ik de frustrerende situatie met een helder(der) hoofd en hart kon aanpakken of achter me laten.

Na afronding van de oefenperiode heb ik me de gewoonte aangewend om deze zin elke ochtend, direct na het wakker worden, een paar keer te herhalen. Kleine moeite, groot resultaat!

Een spierverrekking of een scheurtje voel je maar als er wat mis is met je hart ligt dat toch weer totaal anders.
Ik vond het daarom niet zo een slecht idee om ook dat eens een keertje te laten checken.

Misschien is het op zich geen slecht idee dat lopers of sporters van welk kaliber ook, dat eens laten doen.  Zou de onze overheid dat trouwens niet wat kunnen aanmoedigen?

‘ Let the heart do the talking ‘

Thuis is waar je hart ligt – en je keuken is het warme hart van je huis. Hoe gezond is dit warme hart waar je dagelijks alle maaltijden voor je gezin liefdevol bereid? Vaak gebruiken we onbewust middelen die ons gezin langzaam maar zeker schaadt. Gezond koken doe je in een gifvrij en schone omgeving. Ik hoop dat de volgende tips en recepten je op weg helpen om een gezonde routine voor de keuken op te bouwen.

Allereerst schoonmaakmiddelen die je moet vermijden:
Amoniak: Zeer brandbaar. Bij inademing intense aantasting van de slijmvliezen en de ademhalingswegen. Astma verwekker. Heel schadelijk voor ogen, neus en huid.
Chloor: Chloor irriteert de huid de ogen en het ademhalingssysteem.
Gootsteenontstopper: De meeste gootsteenontstoppers bevatten Natriumhydroxide en Zwavelzuur.  Natriumhydroxide is een bijtende stof die huid en ogen kan aantasten. Zwavelzuur is gevaarlijk. Het bevat huid en textiel vretende bestanddelen. Inademing van zwavelzuur veroorzaakt astma en blijvende beschadiging aan de luchtwegen.
Afwasmiddel: Meeste van deze producten bevallen Chlorine (Chloor).# 1 oorzaak van kinder vergiftiging.
Schimmelverwijderaar: Bevat Sodium hypochlorite en dat is dus vloeibare Chlorine (Chloor)
Ovenreiniger: Sodium Hydroxide = Chloor
Anti-bacterieele middelen: bevatten Triclosan: De zuivere stof is licht irriterend voor de huid en de ogen, en irriterend voor de demhalingswegen. Wanneer dit door de huid trekt kan het leveraandoeningen veroorzaken.

Gezonde alternatieven:
Groene zeep: Dit kun je bij de grote supermarkten kopen; de meeste schoonmaakklussen kunt u hiermee klaren.
Afwasmiddel: op basis van plantaardige grondstoffen, je koopt dit bij biologisch winkels
(Schoonmaak-)azijn: Milde witte azijn lost vuil, zeepresten, en hardwater vlekken op.  Te koop in de supermarkt; wordt gebruikt om vlekken (olie, wax e.d.) te verwijderen; te ontvetten; te desinfecteren en water te verzachten. Dit schoonmaakmiddel kan huidirritatie veroorzaken; draag rubber handschoenen.
Zuiveringszout: Te koop in de supermarkt. Deze soda kan voor allerlei klussen gebruikt worden; schoonmaken, desinfecteren etc.
Citroensap:Citroensap neutraliseert geuren en is een licht bleekmiddel.

Receptjes:

Allesreiniger: 1/4 liter lauw water 1theelepel zuiveringszout 1 theelepel groene zeep en wat citroensap toe.
Schoonmaakspray: 240 ml witte azijn en 240 ml water
Afvoerreiniger: gooi 1/2 kopje baking soda in de afvoer, gevolgd door een  ½ kopje azijn.  Na 20 min., 2 liter kokend heet water.
Ontsmetter: halve citroen of  limoen
Luchtverfrisser: 240 ml gedestilleerd water en 8-10 druppels essentiele olie naar keuze
voor de keuken is 5 druppels kaneel met 3 druppels kruidnagel heerlijk appeltaart geur of probeer 6 druppels sinasappel met 2 druppels kaneel voor een heerlijke citrusgeur.
Oppervlakreiniger: Baking Soda opgelost in heet water.
Ovenreiniger: ¼ kopje. baking soda, 2 eetlepels zout, een paar eetlepels heet water zodat het een pasta word. Mix alles samen en laat het 10 min staan. (pas op met draden)

Ready, steady, Detox….

De koelkast

Benodigheden: Handschoenen, schoonmaakdoekjes, oude theedoeken voor schoonmaken en drogen, bovengenoemde schoonmaakmiddelen, vuilniszakken, mop en emmer, bezem, stoffer en blik, en natuurlijke lekkere muziek!

Trek de koelkast uit het stopcontact. Heb je etenswaar dat gauw bederft in de koelkast zet ze dan in een ijsbox. De koelkast blijft 4 uur lang koel en de vriezer ongeveer 24 uur. Gooi alles over dat overdatum/bedorven is weg (ook medicatie die geopend is en na 3 maanden nog niet op is gemaakt!!) Verwijder alles dat los gemaakt kan worden zoals, plankjes, deurbakjes en planken, groentebakken. Was alles in heet water met je zelfgemaakte allesreiniger of oppervlakreiniger. Droog goed af. Wrijf een halve limoen over de planken en laat staan om te drogen terwijl je verder gaat. Maak de binnenkant van de koelkast schoon met je allesreiniger en oppervlakreiniger. Maak de buitenkant van de koelkast schoon met je spray.

De keuken

Allereerst muziek met goeie tempo en dan de handschoenen aan.

Rommel: Ruim alle rommel op: Alles wat rondslingert weer terugzetten op de plek waar het thuishoort. Gooi alles overdatum uit de voorraadkastjes. Bezem onder en achter alle keuken apparatuur. Gooi alle rotzooi weg.

De wasbak: Doe de afwas. Vul de wasbank met heet water en afwasmiddel. Afwas volgorde: Kopjes/bekers/glazen, bestek, kommen, borden, potten en pannen. Wasbak leegmaken en schoonmaken met een combinatie van water, baking soda en citroensap. Drain the sink and wash using a combination of water, baking soda, and lemon juice. Gebruik je afvoerreiniger zoals beschreven. Heb je een roestvrij stalen gootsteen? Poets het dan op met een doekje met olijfolie zodat de watervlekken verdwijnen.

Oppervlakken: Spuit en veeg de oppervlakken met je spray/allerreiniger of oppervlakreiniger. Bezem en mop de vloer en klaar!!

De Oven: Verwijder alle rekken en laat ze weken in een heet sopje. Gebruik de allerreiniger en maak de boven en buitenkant  van je oven schoon. Doe je handschoenen goed aan en reinig de oven met je ovenreiniger. Voor hardnekkige vlekken kun je de oven verwarmen op 260 graden en de pasta voor een half uur op de vlekken laten. Doe de oven uit, laat nog een uurtje op de vlek tot het koud is. Met een vochtige spons schoonvegen. Gefeliciteerd, je bent klaar met je keuken detox! Spuit wat luchtverfrisser maak een kopje thee en geniet in het warme hart van je huis!

Her father was a sales manager and her mother was a college professor. She was raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and later moved to Evanston, Illinois, where she graduated from high school in 1968. Later that year, she joined the Hull House theater company in Chicago and got a job as a receptionist at the offices of Playboy magazine (the wiki).

Claudia feels it’s necessary for her, at this point in her career, to move to one coast or the other, for the Windy City’s theatrical opportunities are limited. “Every actress has her particular skills and drawbacks,” says Claudia. “It’s a show-business axiom that if you really want to overcome your limitations, you go to New York, but if you’re satisfied with your skills, then you’re ready for Hollywood. The reasoning is that with a stage play, you get to work with the same material over a longer period of time than you do with a film, so you have more of a chance to improve.” (“Acting Playmate,” Playboy, November 1969.)

Five years later she was unemployed, single, and depressed; ten years later, she was dead. If you ask me, she chose the wrong coast. I think her sadly short life took a left turn at Albuquerque when she left Chicago and went to that shithole Los Angeles. In Hollywood, she appeared on an episode of The Brady Bunch in 1973 and lived with songwriter Bobby Hart (actual birth name Robert Luke Harshman; do you suppose they called each other by their real names when they were at home, or went with the show biz handles? oh, I fervently hope he called her Chesty…) from 1970-1975. He was the less handsome half of the almost-kinda-famous songwriting duo Boyce and Hart.

I assume the boyfriend got her the part on The Brady Bunch because the Monkees and the Brady Bunch appeared in each other’s shit a lot and Boyce and Hart wrote (and sometimes performed) most of the tunes for the Monkees — please tell me it is not news to you that the Monkees were a sham act developed to be a sort of made-for-tv-Beatles — including “Last Train to Clarksville” and the show’s theme (“Hey, hey, we’re the Monkees,” etc). They also penned such hits as “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone” and “Come a Little Bit Closer.” Hart broke up with her in ‘75 and, living alone in much smaller quarters than she had been accustomed to, she got super-depressed, turned to a party crowd, and started regularly doing heroin and coke.

On the career side, throughout the 70’s, Claudia appeared in films, mainly just drive-in horror movie flicks. The wiki claimed they called her Queen of the B’s but I’m a huge B-movie guy and I have never heard this. I mean, I recognized her, but I didn’t think of her particularly as the queen. And the wiki has it somewhat wrong: I wouldn’t really call them B movies, because I associate that with an earlier genre of film, a la Ed Wood.

The types of 1970’s movies that Claudia was in are more like cult classics, thinly veiled excuses for weirdo softcore porn. Think of it as early skinemax, or very lite spatterporn. Personal favorites are Unholy Rollers about the motherfucking all-girl ROLLER DERBY (sorry, I get excited, cause, you know … sk8 or die), Deathsport, which takes place in the year 3000, and Gator Bait, which I believe needs no explanation.

In ‘79, she auditioned to replace Kate Jackson on Charlie’s Angels but good old Aaron Spelling and company were not fans of her Playboy credit and gave the job to Shelley Hack instead. (Hack’s turn as Tiffany Welles almost sank the show and she was fired in 1980 anyways, so whatever.)

On October 3, 1979, almost a decade to the day after her Playboy pictorial hit the newsstands, Claudia was driving to the home of her on-again, off-again boyfriend Stan Herman in Malibu to pick up her shit cause they had broken up again when her Volkswagen Beetle was hit by a van and she was killed. She was thirty years old.

After the team meeting on Monday, the players cleared out their lockers and started to meet with the coaches on an individual basis. Most of these are complete now.

The coaches have also had a number of meetings to identify areas of needs for the upcoming season. In college football, there will always be a dozen or more players that leave after the season due to using all of their eligibility, graduation, finding a career-job and the like. So teams are always looking at bringing new players in to fill the gaps.

Rory Kohlert had an immeidate impact this season.

Some of these players make an instant impact like Joel Seutter, Cam Redl, Zach Hart, Jeff Hassler, Luke Thiel, Garrett Bolen, Mitch Friesen, Harley Irwin, Cody Halseth, Shayne Dueck and others did this year (we hope we didn’t miss anyone!!).

While others could be stars of the future, like Brad Nehring, Charlie Power, Levi Steinhauer, Seamus Neary, Matt Walker and others.

When looking at the team for the 2010 season, there are also a number of second and third year players who are ready to challenge the starting line-up.

The coaches will be looking at filling immediate needs, which are those vacated by graduating players Scott McHenry, Hubert Buydens, Tyler O’Gorman, Taylor Wallace, Cory Jones and Jon Krahenbil. Some of their replacements are already on the Huskies roster; some might still be in high school. The coaches will also look at areas where the team could improve and add depth. Finally, the coaches need to forecast into the future two or three years to figure out which players will be graduating and which positions will need to be filled in 2011 and 2012.

A good example of this was in the 2009 season where the team keep a few more linebackers than normal because it is expected that there will be a number of them graduating this season or next. Keeping extra players gives some of the younger guys time to learn the system and be ready to challenge for a spot in the future.

The whiteboards are full of ink and a list of wants, needs and what ifs are written all over the coaches office. A number of recruits have already sent email, film, letters, etc. to the coaches. The Huskies had one of their best recruiting classes last year, and they are doing their best to do the same thing again for 2010.

Recruiting begins in earnest after the Vanier Cup, but having a good plan in place is the foundation for a good recruiting class.

KramKram!!

In een mailuitwisseling met Esther kwam ik erachter dat ze ontzettend gepassioneerd kan schrijven over het maken van ‘Encoustic tekeningen’. Ideaal voor deze rubriek: ‘Zij volgen hun HART’

Esther aan het woord: Encoustic tekeningen, worden gemaakt met een warm (reis)strijkijzer (die heb ik zelf bij me) waarop de bijenwasblokjes die verschillende kleuren hebben gesmolten worden. Het warm geworden was wordt dan op een speciaal papier gestreken, dit kan per persoon heel verschillend zijn en natuurlijk gebruikt ieder ook zijn eigen kleuren. Dit is leuk en creatief om te doen, daarnaast heeft iemand dan ook echt iets om mee naar huis te nemen en in te lijsten indien men dit wilt. Vaak vinden mensen het ook prettig om er achteraf nog een keer naar te kijken en zelf te zien en voelen wat zo een tekening voor ze doet. Overigens heb zijn ze ook zeer verschillend per persoon.

Als iedereen klaar is met het maken van deze tekeningen, ga ik ze bespreken, er ontstaan namelijk allerlei figuren en afbeeldingen. Deze figuren en afbeeldingen hebben per persoon soms een andere betekenis. Eerst laat ik de deelnemers zelf naar de tekeningen kijken en vraag ze om op te schrijven wat ze zelf zien in te tekening. Daarna ga ik per persoon langs om te tekening te bespreken. Als ik eenmaal zo een tekening in mijn handen heb, analyseer ik eerst de ontstane figuren en afbeeldingen, en tegelijk krijg ik dan allerlei informatie door van “het onbekende”.

Afhankelijk van de groep en personen geef ik de informatie door, persoonlijke en ernstige dingen zeg ik nooit, zeker niet in een groep, en eigenlijk alleen maar tegen een persoon als ik voel dat degene er daadwerkelijk wat aan heeft.

Last week, Gary Hart, former United States Senator of the state of Colorado, had a very interesting and important piece published on The Huffington Post. Titled “A National Security Act for the 21st Century,” Sen. Hart laid out his vision for “a new statutory basis for [America's] national security strategy in this new century.”

You can read the whole piece here for context, but as far as PNSR and its CEO James R. Locher III see it:

Senator Hart is correct.  “The only issue that matters is whether Cold War strategies and structures adequately address present and future realities or whether the realities of a new century demand a fresh look at the institutions and policies, military and non-military, that will make the nation secure.”

Understanding these challenges and the imperative for timely reform, PNSR is engaging with stakeholders and external experts to further discover and develop potential solutions, inviting those who want to advance reform to contribute.  More information can be found at www.pnsr.org.

Senator Hart should take comfort, this issue has already been answered.  “After our examination of the new strategic environment of the next quarter century and of a strategy to address it, this Commission concludes that significant changes must be made in the structures and processes of the US national security apparatus.”  The above quotation is the very first sentence of a commission’s report that was delivered to the Congress on March 15, 2001 – long before the attacks of 9/11 that further clarified the problems of our Cold War legacy thinking and institutions.

Senator Hart should also take heart – literally.  He along with former Senator Warren Rudman led a team of distinguished Americans that wrote that sentence.  In fact, the two-and-a-half year effort addressed the nature of the 21^st Century threat, questioned weapon procurements, took on the intelligence community, and raised the implications of challenges for which the military is either not suited or needs to be collaborative with other skills from across government and others.

The Project on National Security Reform’s (PNSR) first report, Forging a New Shield, delivered to the President and Congress in November 2008 and consisting of some 800 pages, identified and analyzed specific problems of our current national security system and described the root causes.  It then presented a vision for 21^st Century national security and the path to reach it.  PNSR’s newly released report, Turning Ideas Into Action, focuses on specific implementation steps and tools that will make the vision a reality.

PNSR believes that we must organize for success.  We need a collaborative, agile and innovative national security system that can work together across agencies, departments, jurisdictions, and sectors.  This system must horizontally and vertically integrate all elements of national power to make timely, informed decisions and take decisive action.

Reaching this vision will require significant changes to the way people think and operate today.  The national security apparatus must:

- Focus at the strategic level

- Concentrate on national missions and outcomes

- Match resources to missions

- Take a whole-of-government approach

- Establish a national security workforce

- Leverage and extend the collective knowledge of the entire national security community

Getting there will not be easy.  Many obstacles must be overcome.  First, the mental model that persists is clearly that of the Cold War system and is dominated by defense and intelligence, and to a lesser extent, diplomacy – each in its own separate domain.  Second, political sensitivities, concerned about power, jurisdiction and resources, resist change.  Third, the sheer size of national security reform is huge and can be daunting unless broken into manageable pieces.  The fourth obstacle is bandwidth – that is, the time and attention needed to focus on the reform challenge is overwhelmed by the requirements of managing the daily “in-box.”

Leaders like Senator Hart must continue to demand reform.  Momentum is building, but in the face of the great challenges the nation faces, we need more action.  The movement for true national security reform needs more push, more support, more drive and more commitment from those at all levels who know that things must change.  Hard work lies ahead, but the time to act is now.

Jim Locher is better equipped by background and experience than anyone I know to comment on defense structures and reforms, as his comments here prove. He has given extensive thought to the need for our Cold War structures and institutions to adapt to the new realities, opportunities as well as threats, of the 21st century. I encourage all those concerned with the urgent need for this adaptation and the reasons for it to follow the work of the Project on National Security Reform. As Jim says, the key is to change the way people think and operate today.

We appreciate Hart’s leadership, vision, and voice to the important issue of national security reform, and are thankful for the conversation. Hopefully now the mission led by PNSR and others like Hart will transfer to Washington’s halls of power, ending the talk and beginning the action.

Mit der Zeit sind die Einsätze dabei ganz schön hoch geworden, so das es mittlerweile um eine halbe Million Dollar für Amir bzw. um Leben und Tod für Streeter ging.

The Temecula Valley Harvest Celebration and Barrel Tasting got underway today.  From the fun everyone seemed to be having, it would be a great way to liven up your Sunday, too.  Sunday November 8th is the second and final installment of the wandering festival that celebrates the harvest in Temecula’s wine country.

Today we got a bit of a late start and lingered some at each location.  After all, why rush?  Still we managed to squeeze in visits to four wineries along Rancho California Road:  Callaway, Hart, Thornton and South Coast.

Callaway Winery

The tickets were waiting for us at Callaway, so we began there.  They had turned their barrel room into a buffet area, serving the little pork belly samples and caper relish.  That was a delicious start.  At the wine table, they were pouring Chardonnay, Merlot and a barrel sample of a Cabernet Sauvignon.  I tried the 100% Merlot and was quite impressed with its dark complexity and smoky character.  The Cab had only been in the barrel 12 months and had another 6 to 12 months to go, so it was a bit young.  Even with the “Cabernet Nouveau” taste, it was nice and fruity and hopefully will be wonderful when finished in 2010.

Hart Family Winery

Next was a short backtrack to Hart.  This little, rustic winery is one of the oldest in the Temecula Valley.  And one of the best, I think.  Through the facility and out to a back area, the Hart folks were serving Italian sausages with a spicy marinara sauce.  To go along with that little plate, some really wonderful Cal-Italia wines.  The Sangiovese and the Barbera were both excellent and paired quite well with the food.  I wandered in to the tasting room hoping to find their wonderful Rhone-style blend, “Three.”  Alas, the blend has changed and no longer features Mourvedre.  A loss for me, but a gain for Tempranillo fans, as the latest version contains that grape along with Grenache and Syrah.

One way to get around

Back on the road.  At this point, it may be wise to point out that on this Temecula Valley winery tour – or any winery-to-winery, day-long excursion – one should either have a designated driver or do a lot of spitting.  If you can’t stand to spit out good wine, the DD is a requirement.  A lot of people utilize limousine services to haul them and their parties around.  There were a lot of long, black stretch limos on the roads.  Whatever your solution, figure it out before you start.

Thornton was our next stop.  In the tasting room, we were greeted with a rather sweet sparkling wine which my wife fell in love with and a NV Brut that had a fantastic nose.  They were serving a delicious apple bread pudding and a pulled pork and risotto dish.   Their Viognier was full of aroma and flavor and a barrel sample of Syrah showed it was nearly ready for bottling.  We had planned on a late lunch at their Cafe Champagne restaurant, but things were a little busy there and we opted to keep moving and shoot for lunch in Old Town Temecula.

South Coast Winery

First though, our final winery stop at South Coast.  This resort/spa/winery is huge and probably the biggest showcase in the Temecula Valley.  In 2008 they became the first Southern California Winery ever to win the coveted Golden Bear Award at the California State Fair as “Best Winery in California.”  This summer, they won it again.  As I wandered around the beautiful grounds, I couldn’t help but notice the staff was set up for a wedding! As if they didn’t have enough going on.  The crowds certainly gathered around their serving table, with the smoke from an open grill full of rubbed beef providing the bait.  A fairly delicious slice of meat was served with a Tempranillo sauce.  Over at the pouring station, there was ample space to enjoy a sampling of a nice Grenache Rose and and an even nicer Tempranillo.

On your travels through the Temecula Valley you can expect to encounter wines that feature aromas and flavors of sage, eucalyptus and chapparal.  It’s said they have especially flavorful Chardonnays and Merlots.  I can’t speak for the Cards, but the Merlots I have tasted are full of depth and very tasty.  The Dolcetto and Malbec wines come highly recommended and I found some lush Tempranillos and Sangioveses.

You won’t find too many of these wines in stores, so you will want to plan on picking up a bottle – or twelve – of your favorites from the wineries.

The Celebration is a great excuse – if you need one – to get over to Temecula and enjoy a beautiful day and a burgeoning wine area that is primed to break out and claim its share of attention.

Laurence Nixon

Half way through the season, we gave out our mid-term report cards. Here we are with our end of the year awards. Did we miss someone? Let us know in the comments!

Offensive player of the season
Dallas: Laurence Nixon. While he didn’t lead in any of the statistical categories, his 1933 yards was nonetheless impressive, as was his 62.5 completion percentage. However, where he excelled, especially late in the season, was in his management of the offence. You could tell his confidence was growing and that reads were getting easier the further the season went along. He is a leader of this team, taking on more than his share of the responsibility when the Huskies were struggling early, and is a primary reason for its success.

BleedingGreen2009: Laurence Nixon. It may not have always been pretty, but when crunch time came, Nixon always rose to the occasion. After miraculously leading the team to narrow victories in overtime, he overcame a somewhat sluggish start to lead the team to four lopsided victories. He has improved tremendously over the course of eight games and this is a major reason why I see him as the top offensive player. The offense relied on him to elevate his game in order to finish the season strong and he’s done that.  The expectations he had for the regular season heading in, have been met or very close to it. He seems cool, calm and collected at the controls heading into playoffs.

The Outsider: When I started doing this, I narrowed it down to five players before making the final decision. Travis Gorski, Scott McHenry, Tyler O’Gorman, Jeff Hassler and my Offensive player of the season, Laurence Nixon. All five had good seasons and proved how valuable they were in different ways. Gorski, who was always open, McHenry who sparked the offense when he returned from injury. O’Gorman who was a steady back and a great go-to guy and Hassler who helped the offense get to that next level. But it was Nixon who improved every game and really took command of the offense when it was struggling. Nixon is the leader of the team on and off the field and a big reason why they Huskies finished in first place.

Peter Thiel and Taylor Wallace

Defensive player of the season
Dallas: Bryce McCall. His 45.5 tackles led the team and his seven interceptions were second in the Canada West. He has a nose for the ball, reading the quarterback and being in the right spot, more often than not. He also sets an example with his physical play – he picked up right where Dylan Barker left off, and the middle of the field is just as daunting a place for opposing receivers as has always been. McCall deserves the nod, although there are many defensive players who were right there with him.

BleedingGreen2009: There are many players on defense who had fantastic seasons. Taylor Wallace was my mid-season pick, but i’ve got to go with Safety Bryce McCall he’s showing similarities of another former safety in Dylan Barker.  He dishes out crushing hits, comes up with interceptions at opportune times (seven in eight games) and leads the team in tackles. In my opinion, he’s been the most dominant player at his position for that defence over the course of the season and rightfully deserves the nod.

The Outsider: This was the hardest category to pick because there were a half dozen or so guys who had outstanding seasons. Another handful had good seasons. I like your picks of Taylor Wallace and Bryce McCall because both of them bring great leadership to the team. But I am going to go with Peter Thiel. I watch a lot of game film and Peter may not have the stats of some other players, but he was involved in a lot of plays. He was tenth in the conference in tackles with 42.5 and had one QB sack. He had some monster hits, was able to stuff the run made good reads on pass coverage.

Grant Shaw

Special teams player of the season
Dallas: Grant Shaw. He led the Canada West in scoring with 79 points, plus he set records with a 55 yard field goal and a 91 yard punt, all while starting at cornerback. Like the rest of the team, he improved as he went along in the season, and his tremendous punting was a big factor in the Huskies’ success, winning the field position battle more often than not. In addition, his athleticism allowed the Huskies to pull off short kick recoveries and fake punts.

BleedingGreen2009: Grant Shaw. Each and every game Shaw’s punting allowed the Huskies to win the field position battle and get a jump on opponents early in games. On top of that he chipped with a crucial blocked, a fake punt and many huge kicks that were instrumental in leading the team to first place. Each week it seemed like the special teams game ball was reserved for Shaw as his special team’s performance was top notch. While we can’t forget many of the contributions made by others on special teams, Shaw is far and away the “Special teams player of the year.”

The Outsider: Three for three here, I am going with Grant Shaw. You guys have outlined all of the reasons, so there is not much more for me to say here!

Joel Seutter

Rookie of the season
Dallas: Joel Seutter. He had an impressive first season, starting all eight games at defensive end, building on an impressive training camp. He finished with 18.5 tackles and 1.5 sacks, with 3.5 tackles for losses, which is impressive for an 18-year-old rookie. However, he is most impressive when watching him play, as he routinely pressures veteran left tackles deep into the offensive backfield and cuts off the weak side, forcing the play to the middle and strong side.

BleedingGreen2009: Zach Hart. In some cases, stats don’t lie. Hart finished with 29.5 tackles and 6 sacks. In other cases, stats do lie, as even these numbers don’t do justice to what Hart has done on that defensive line. One of the reasons the secondary was able to get so many interceptions this year was because of the great work in the trenches by Hart and Seutter, hurrying the quarterback’s throws and forcing them into making bad decisions.  More impressively, it seems like he gets better and better each week.  Hart deserves my “Rookie of the year” award, for the sole reason that he really doesn’t play like one.

The Outsider: You guys both have great picks here. I was going to suggest Seutter as well, but since no one mentioned him, I am going to vote for Jeff Hassler. I know that he only played four games, but he was really impressive in them. Hassler had 367 yards on the ground, an 8.2 yard average, which led all CanadaWest running backs. He also had an 84 yard kick off return and has done well on special teams. An exciting player to watch!

Hubert Buydens

Lineman of the season
Dallas: Patrick Neufeld. He was described by Brian Towriss as the best left tackle in Canada, and every time you see him play, it’s clear why. He is quick, technically proficient, and damn near impossible to beat. The whole offensive line plays better with him in there, as does the quarterback he is protecting. It’s no coincidence that the Huskies’ offence had their two worst games of the season with him out of the lineup, and that the ground game started rolling the game he came back.

BleedingGreen2009: Hubert Buydens. He’s the veteran amongst a fairly young group of guys on that offensive line.  He’s provided great leadership and consistency, bringing a strong work ethic to the field and showing others around him what it really takes to win and be successful at this level. He’s played each game with very few lapses or mistakes, blocking, protecting his quarterback, and creating holes for the running back with great effectiveness.

The Outsider: Again, I like both of your choices and for me this is a tight contest. I am going to go with Hubert Buydens because of the intangibles he brings as a veteran to this team. In his fifth year, he is just as dedicated as he was as a rookie. He is a leader on the sidelines and in the clubhouse. He is a solid player and a solid citizen.

Grant Shaw

MVP
Dallas: Grant Shaw. He had great kicking stats, but he was also very solid defensively, so much so that he rarely sees a ball thrown his way. He still had 18 tackles, a breakup and an interception, starting every game at cornerback for the Huskies. He’s a smart, tremendous athlete who comes through when called upon.

BleedingGreen2009: Grant Shaw. If Shaw were to go down, not one but two positions would need to be filled. He’s provided the team with clutch kicking, proving them with a reliable leg in key parts of games, and broke punting and place-kicking records along the way. For as good as he’s been on special teams, he’s been equally as good as a defensive back.  He didn’t get the numbers that McCall, Krahenbil and others did, but that is party because offenses chose to not throw to his side. He has ice in his veins, as it seems the bigger the game, the bigger the play and the bigger the kick, the better he performs.

The Outsider: Grant Shaw. He has CFL quality kicking in his leg and doubles as one of the top DBs in CanadaWest. Shaw’s talents allow the Huskies to carry another player on the roster which is usually reserved for a kicker. He is a smart player, practices hard and is one of the main reasons that the Huskies are 7-1 and in first place. Watch his kick-offs tomorrow. You’ll see why he was out unanimous choice for MVP.
