Everyone knows about the Haruhi movie right? Based upon the fourth book, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (or 涼宮ハルヒの消失, but never Vanishment). If not, it’s coming out February the 6th.

… from the following news. She won’t be making ANY money (not like idols get paid in the first place) from the Opening Song, for one reason, she isn’t singing it. To me this is a massive surprise, for one thing, every song in the show has been sung by her, even the collab’s have her in it, and she’s the face of the Haruhi franchise, even in Lucky Star, she played herself, singing a song from the Haruhi concert, Haruhi, in a commercial, and the lead character, Konata, who cosplays as Haruhi at a Cosplay Cafe, hell I might even go as far as to say she’s the face of the animation studio Kyoto Animation.

No, Aya Hirano is not singing the opening song for the film, instead the baton has been handed to her co-star, Minori Chihara, who plays the female lead in Disappearance, Yuki Nagato. If you have read the book, then you would know that Haruhi is shafted from the top spot by Yuki.

Personally, I’m torn between two trains of thought, one being; I love Aya Hirano and all of her songs, but I understand Minori singing the OP due to Yuki’s MASSIVE role in the film…

Oh well, time will tell, and it’ll tell us on January 27th (yay, two fays before my birthday!) when the album comes out, which can be pre-ordered from Amazon JP.

In other Haruhi-related news, this poor guy got some more epic trolling by Kadokawa, getting a candle film strip in his Endless Eight Limited Edition 5.428571 DVD. I want to meet the lucky guy that got this on his strip;

It came to my attention that Lantis is in the process of releasing ANOTHER set of character song CDs. Currently, the first 4 have already hit stores: Haruhi, Yuki, Mikuru, and Itsuki, in that order. The last 3, Kyon, Tsuruya, and Taniguchi (lol?), are set to come out on the 9th of this month, which is in a few days. Naturally, these are only released in Japan at the moment, so the only way to get ahold of those CDs is to ship them overseas. Of course, within days of release, the entirety of the albums, even including their art, have been uploaded to some sites for download, so I had a chance to listen to the first 4 albums.

Before that, though, I’ll point out the sheer number of franchise albums that Lantis has released. Using their website as a reference, let’s take a look at how many they have.

It comes out to 38 albums total. A lot of them only have like two songs plus the off-vocal versions, but even those tiny albums cost ¥1,000. Altogether, a devoted fan who wants to actually purchase every album is going to be down like $400-500.

I think most of us will just end up downloading them, though .

Anyway, I went ahead and listened to the new character song albums, and overall, they’re not too bad. I’ll go song by song. Credits to tsuiteru at METANORN for uploading the songs.

Haruhi Suzumiya (Aya Hirano) (here)

1. “Punkish Regular”

The song has this pretty distinct beat at the very beginning that comes back occasionally, and the overall instrumentation makes heavy use of electric guitar, bass, and drumset. Basically, it’s your typical rock song. It’s not a bad song, but it’s not very unique.

2. “Sono Hi Sora wa Kitto Aoi” (その日空はきっと青い)

This song is even more stereotypical than Punkish Regular. I like the chorus of this one better than the other, though.

Yuki Nagato (Minori Chihara) (here)

1. “under ‘Mebius’”

I don’t really get the name, but Nagato’s album makes a lot of use of electronic sounds again. The chorus of this song is pretty surprising when it first shows up, but it’s really catchy. I’m kind of biased toward songs that make use of uncommon intervals like the major seventh (here), but who knows, maybe you are, too? The song has a really frantic feel to it, and the beat is really fast. Actually, it’s one of those songs that you might expect to hear in a video game, which I guess is fitting for Nagato. Out of all the songs I listened to here, I’d say this one is my favorite.

2. “Tsūka Chiten no Musica” (通過地点のMUSICA)

This is a pretty calm song, but it keeps a decent pace. under ‘Mebius’ is better, in my opinion, though.

Mikuru Asahina (Yūko Gotō) (here)

1. “Etto…Returns Shite Revenge!” (えっと…リターンズしてリベンジ！)

First things first, I think the cover art for this album is waaaay better than the first. I don’t really get why they felt they had to put Mikuru in a maid outfit for the first album, but this time she actually looks normal. The song itself isn’t really cutesy except for Goto’s voice, but I really like the bridge. Go figure, it’s another major seventh…

2. “Hen desu, Kowai desu” (ヘンですコワイです)

Okay, so obviously by the name, here’s the obligatory cute song by Goto. I think they did a better job with this one than the songs on the first character song album, though. This song has a pretty neat chorus where it changes meter and gets an accordian accompaniment. The chorus kind of sounds like a Kirby song, too, hehe.

Itsuki Koizumi (Daisuke Ono) (here)

“‘Tsumaranai Hanashi desu yo’ to Boku wa Iu” (「つまらない話ですよ」と僕は言う)

“Tada no Himitsu” (ただの秘密)

Honestly, I don’t really like Itsuki’s songs. I’m not really well-versed in what the names of pop styles are, but his songs have a… smooth feel to it or something? I don’t think that’s the right term, but you’d probably get what I mean if you listened to it. The songs aren’t bad, but I just don’t like that style.

So anyway, what I really want to hear are Tsuruya’s and Kyon’s albums. Tsuruya’s was my favorite out of all of the original character song albums, and Kyon’s was good, too. Also, I’m curious about what Taniguchi’s is going to sound like, Minori Shiraishi was hilarious in the Lucky Star album.

In this hobby, nendoroids are such a big craze that it wouldn’t be surprising to have heard about them or own at least one. With the abundance of styles and characters from anime series, one nendoroid is bound to make it’s way into your home.

I’ve amassed what I think is a sizable collection, but I never posted pictures of what my nendoroid army looks like. The pictures are a bit outdated and do not accurately reflect the enlisting of new recruits.

According to Tsuki-board.net, I supposedly own roughly a combination of 160 nendoroids and nendoroid petites, but the numbers on Tsuki-board is not accurate considering it is open to users adding into the database which invites human error.

My very first nendoroid set was the heavily bootlegged versions of the Death Note and I’ve wisen up to both bootlegs and internet purchases. They were my first and last bootlegs and for those who don’t know the difference, it’s definitely a big difference and going authentic is the way to go in the long run. My first authentic nendoroid purchase (IIRC) was Bincho-tan at a local anime store.

As a completionist, I tend to complete sets regardless of how exclusive and/or limited the figures are or how the odds of being able to acquire the figure are stacked against me. Given the manufacturer behind the nendoroid line is Good Smile Company (for the most part), the exclusives and limiteds released are plentiful and have to be one of the most aggravating line to collect. Anything from event exclusives such as your standard fare of Wonder Festival and Comiket items to the unconventional shrine solicitation, mail-in dvd coupons, webshop, magazine, and video game sets.

If you’re not into cute, super deformed/chibi-fied characters, nendoroids are probably not your thing and it saves you the trouble of having to deal with such a problematic delightful line-up. For the large quantity of nendoroids out there in a typical $34.99 price range, collecting this line quickly adds up in costs. I think the normal retail price that nendoroids are sold for are a bit steep for the amount of quality involved and scale. For around the same price, I could purchase a full-scaled figure from Kotobukiya’s US distributor and mainly prefer full-scaled figures over non-scaled ones. Sometimes, nendoroids have amazing retail prices such as Saber Lion nendoroid at $29.99 and other times nendoroids are regularly priced at $41.99 if they come with additional accessories. From another perspective, the price for this nendoroid is just about right considering this is an imported novelty item.

As you can see, I can’t say “no” to these devilishly cute little items and wonder when or if I’ll ever tire of this figure type. Even with how much is constantly being mass-produced and the never-ending releases of extraneous product I wouldn’t have bought in the first place had a nendoroid or nendoroid petit not been attached to it.

I had a difficult time stacking the boxes of nendoroids on top of one another in fear of the boxes falling over and taking damage. I was rearranging the figure boxes and decided to use some of them as support for the nendoroid wall. Thank you Hayate, Moetan, Hime, Onechanbara, Spirit of Wonder girl, Louise, Reinforce, Haruhi, Iroha, Unity May, Garnet, Hiyori, Chidori, Klan Klang, Kpuhime, Saber Maid and everyone else.

I hope everyone had a really fantastic Thanksgiving holiday. My Thanksgiving holidays are always the same – nothing special and nothing disastrous. I am a bit ticked off that eating establishments overcharge base price just because it’s a holiday, but I should have expected that. Now, I didn’t  have time to cook or prepare anything for Thanksgiving and my family went out to do their own thing this year meaning I couldn’t come over and eat some good food with them.

On one fateful day in the year 2007, a certain unknown genius had asked a question so revolutionary it shook the very foundations of time and space: What if Kyon was a girl?

Welcome to the Genderbending of Haruhi Suzumiya, where every one of your most fantastical dreams with the original Haruhi cast shall be utterly destroyed by the newer, I daresay crazier, gender-reversed cast!

The Suzumiya Haruhi no Seitenkan fan project, like most anime-related movements, began in Japan somewhere during 2007 when fanarts of Kyonko (♀Kyon) started surfacing. Her amusingly snarky disposition and inexplicably delicious adorable ponytail, along with Haruki’s (♂Haruhi) projected manliness, immediately propelled the concept into widespread recognition. Fandubs were made as a tribute to it, and even cosplayers began taking notice.

But the legend did not stop there.

I guess it should come to no surprise then that the English Haruhi fandom, insane as they’ve always been, have also decided to participate in this project by attempting to rewrite the entire novel series with every character’s gender upside down. They did not settle for merely changing the names and pronouns of course; pages and pages of discussions were filled in an effort to keep story events internally consistent, and to insert a bit of creativity only possible through the power of genderbending. Although ultimately it proved impossible to rewrite every novel, the Seitenkan team was able to achieve rewriting the first novel before shifting its attention to creating a doujin visual novel instead.

But really, looking back at all the things born from this Seitenkan movement, I realize that perhaps this isn’t just a short-lived fad that most movements leeching off of another’s popularity usually turn out to be (like J-mahjong, or… Saigar). It obviously isn’t going as strong as it was a year ago, but every once in a while there would still be new members joining into the fray, wholly impressed by the awesome idea of a moe Kyonko or manly Haruki. If anything, this is certainly a testament to the endurance of the Haruhi fanbase in its perpetual hunger for new material; it’s even likely this whole project began as an alleviation for the fanbase’s painful wait for a second season. Like a child that has learned independence however, so has this Seitenkan project developed its own sense of identity inside the Haruhi culture itself. How long will it continue, no one knows, but perhaps as long as there are still fans of the Haruhi franchise around, the spirit of Seitenkan may continue to exist, and Kyonko will continue to charm thousands of hearts… including my own.

I know it’s been literally an entire semester since I’ve posted a Weeaboo Wednesday, but look, I actually don’t know that much about Japan. I guess I could have kept reviewing weird hentai that I “accidentally” came upon, but I am pretty tired of getting hits from search terms like “world of warcraft tentacle” and “kkids fucking”.

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE HARUHI DANCE!

The Haruhi dance is the dance performed by the cast of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in the above clip, which apparently comes with the end credits to episodes. Youtube is trying to tell me that there is a season 2, but I refuse to believe it, mostly because the thought of watching a shrill, unlovable, authoritarian teenage girl prance around and sexually abuse less shrill, less unlovable teenage girls any more than I already have is unappetizing, to say the least.

Other than the inverse/reverse/anti-bro-rape (sis-rape?) and the ESPers and the time travelers and the alien robots going pew pew pew with their lasers and the bizarre order in which episodes were originally broadcast, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is actually an incredibly boring exemplar of the “slice of life”/”school life” genre. For those who do not begin the morning by refreshing the “Recent Updates” page on onemanga.com, any manga or anime falling into this category pretty much always begins with some sort of a classroom scene depicting daily life at school, then goes on to show how two or three or several students become friend, and then moves on to club activities and so on, and climaxes with a very exciting school festival. Haruhi is no different, except there are fewer transvestites, homosexuals, secret homosexuals, secret transvestites, and talking animals, and instead focuses on the domineering personality of the title character, and how she might be God.

Oh, sorry. Spoiler alert.

I suppose the series is admirable in a way, especially since the broadcast order (known as the Kyon order), as well as the DVD order, begins with the episode “The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00″. This episode is comprised chiefly of a film that the SOS Brigade club (Haruhi and her friends) create for the school festival. Every aspect of it is terrible, from the acting to the script to the “production quality”. The plot is one of a
“magical girls” shoujo, where a(n) (attractive, female) time traveler is sent to protect some dude and also fight against this (attractive, female) alien witch character and then everyone ends up pretending to be normal human teenagers and going to the high school of said dude, etc. Also, the dude has ESP.

So the anime begins by lambasting a particular genre of anime, and then ends up mimicking it to some extent. The girl who plays the time traveler character in the festival film is, actually, a time traveler. The girl playing the alien witch character is actually an alien robot, and the boy playing the guy with ESP is indeed an ESPer. The film’s narrator, Kyon, will the narrator for the rest of the series, and the director, Haruhi, turns out to be God.

Oops, spoiler alert.

OK, so Haruhi does merit some acknowledgement on an artistic level, but for fuck’s sake, it’s so shrill.

The one thing that the show has offer that is beyond reproach is this ultrafuckingcute dance!

OH! It turns out that there is a bit of interesting news today…

 Doesn’t reveal too much since the movie is still very early in production, but it’s SUPPOSED to be adapting the 4th novel,  “Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya”, which the second season (from what I belive) was supposed to adapt, or at least most of the second season.

And as of recently more news of the movie has been released announcing the length of the movie, 150 minutes or 2 and a half hours. People worry though if the movie will be too long for the story it’s set to adapt. Below I have the article from Sankaku.

“Haruhi’s remaining deluded minions have reacted with surprise and some delight at the news that the upcoming “Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya” movie adaptation will clock in at 150 minutes, far longer than anyone anticipated.

At two and a half hours the movie appears to be the rough equivalent of 8 episodes (perhaps an unfortunate choice of number), presumably more than long enough to cover the events of the novel – indeed, there is already some speculation that the novel may not have enough material to sustain the film fully, suggesting additional material or novels will be involved.

It remains to be seen just whether this turns out to be an epic finale to the TV series, or an excessively drawn out death rattle as the franchise finally expires…”

I agree with that last line, FOR SURE, Haruhui is slowly dying out as a franchise. Mainly because of Kyoto animations “poor” marketing techniques, such as making false claims(release dates mainly),and endless Eight… how could that not be mentioned, the reason some Haruhi fans abandoned the series completely(despite the surprisingly high DVD sales, with Endless eight on them…).

Sankaku mentions that the length of the movie rounds up to about 8 episodes worth of time, wich is another reason to worry about the movie, especially since endless eight was eight episodes long, and then Kyoto mentioned that if they were to be a Haruhi movie that it would be another adaption of the endless eight arc…

So it’ll definitely be interesting to see how movie shapes up in the end … and not to mention to see the reaction of the public.

It seems as though Haruhi will just be another fad, similar to the likes of Kannagi, K-ON!, and maybe even the (incredible) Bakemonogatari.

And also, the light novels have been coming out here in america, I plan to buy them myself actually.

Hey There,

After the game in Yokohama, I was looking forward to a last day in Tokyo to do some shopping.  Up until that point (Sept 17th), I hadn’t bought any souvenirs, other than some baseball caps and little things, mainly because I didn’t want to have to carry around all that extra stuff.  But, since we’d be going to Sendai the next day, then back to the US on the following day, I figured it was now or never.  So, in the morning, I walked around Tokyo and bought a number of things, including a video game for my PSP.  Power Pros is a popular baseball video game.  I have the US version of it, but in Japan, they sell a version that includes NPB teams.  The newest version for the PSP was released on the 17th and I was able to pick up a copy.

For the rest of the morning, I wandered around Akihabara (called the “electric city”) where they have a lot of electronics stores.  I was able to pick up some small figurines from the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (one of the weirdest anime shows I’ve ever seen), which I am using with some other figures I have to make a different kind of nativity scene around a small christmas tree my parents got me.  I looked through six or seven stores before I found what I was looking for.

After lunch, I went to watch a Sumo tournament.  There are several major sumo tournaments per year, and I think the biggest was taking place while I was in Japan.  I’ve seen some Sumo matches on TV, so I know the basic idea.  The matches themselves only take a few seconds (maybe a minute at the longest), but the ceremony before and after the matches were interesting.

In a Sumo match, you try to force the other guy out of the circle, by pushing, slapping, or carrying him.  The first person to leave the circle, or fall to the ground is the loser, even if they seem to have the upper hand.  For example, if you are pushing the other guy and you trip and fall to the ground, you lose.  Also, if you try to toss a guy out and you fall out of the circle before your opponent hits the ground, you lose.

In a Sumo match, there’s a burst of energy and violence, then the fight is over.  Most of Sumo wrestlers are large, but the largest is not always the best.  I saw matches where a fairly small guy overcame a larger opponent.  It’s all about balance- if a smaller guy can get a larger guy off balance, they will pretty much always win.

There are judges sitting on each side, who would consult when there was a debate about the results of a match.  They sit there in a traditional way, which doesn’t allow them a lot of flexibility.  On a few occasions, I saw a wrestler fall from the ring right onto the judges.  Even though I said that not all Sumo wrestlers are very large, I still don’t think I’d like one of them falling on me.

Hoy os traigo un par de Openings, que seguro que conoceis, aunque sólo sea uno. Aquí los teneis. Por cierto, en este blog, siempre que pueda pondré la canción que corresponda al Opening en su versión completa; es decir, no la de la televisión, si no la del disco correspondiente que saquen. Bueno, no me enrollo más, disfruten:

Este Opening corresponde al anime de True Tears. Es un anime algo raro. Es una adaptación de una novela visual, pero con otra historia diferente. Me encanta el Opening, y su estilo de dibujo también, y la historia…también. Pero que tan solo ofrezcan 13 episodios se hace demasiado corto para siquiera plantear verlo. No sé, igual dentro de algo de tiempo cambio de parecer.

Haruhi. La melancolía de Haruhi Suzumiya. El reciente manga y novela gráfica licenciada por Ivrea nos enseñará que las locas no están tan locas, o algo parecido. El anime, según dicen, es un caos cronológico que hace estar pendiente de cada capítulo como si fuera el último (porque podría serlo…). El manga o la novela…dudo que se valgan de este recurso, ¿No? En fin, habrá que verlo. Yo, por mi parte, esperaré a que Ivrea saque el manga para hacerme con él en cuanto pueda…¡Jum!

Buenas noticias para el mundo Haruhiista, y también para los fans de Fate/Stay Night.

Hace un par de días, ya por fin se dió a conocer la fecha de estreno de la película de La desaparición de Haruhi Suzumiya y también la de Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. La noticia no fue anunciada por la gente de Kadokawa, ni tampoco por los de KyoAni sino por una cartelera de un cine de Japón (a ver si no se enojan estos señores, xD).

El estreno de la película de Haruhi será el 6 de febrero del 2010, mientras que el estreno de la película de Fate/Stay Night será el 23 de enero del mismo año. =D

Pero por el momento, puede haber cambios así que no se emocionen aún!!!

Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮ハルヒ, Suzumiya Haruhi?) is the general name for a series of light novels written by Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrated by Noizi Ito, and subsequently adapted into other media. The story follows the title character, Haruhi Suzumiya, a high school girl who can unconsciously change reality, and her strange antics with her school club, the SOS Brigade, which she founded to investigate any mysterious happenings. Haruhi forcibly drafts her cynical classmate Kyon who narrates the series, and similarly recruits three additional members into her club: the silent bibliophile Yuki Nagato, the shy and timid Mikuru Asahina, and the friendly “mysterious exchange student” Itsuki Koizumi. These members soon reveal themselves to Kyon as the extraordinary characters Haruhi is seeking, sent by their various organizations to observe her and hold her reality warping powers in check by maintaining the illusion of a normal life.

The first novel was published in Japan on June 6, 2003 by Kadokawa Shoten, with nine individual novels published and a planned tenth as of April 1, 2007 (2007 -04-01)[update]. The light novels have been adapted into four separate manga series, five video games, a television anime adaptation, and two original net animations. After the anime adaption aired in 2006, publishing company Kadokawa Shoten received various offers licensing both the novels and its various adaptations.[1][2]

The novels are licensed for English language release in the United States by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers and Yen Press and the anime adaptation was licensed for North American distribution by Kadokawa Pictures USA division, which then sublicensed production and distribution to Bandai Entertainment, until they lost the rights in October 2009.

Characters

Haruhi Suzumiya
Haruhi is the title character and leader of the SOS Brigade, whose energetic and eccentric character proves to be a driving force for the series. She has a mind for adventure, which often leads her subordinates to be swept into her plans. She expresses anger and jealousy towards Mikuru about Kyon, but never lets her friend Mikuru pay the price, often leaving the blame to Kyon.

Kyon
Kyon is a student who unintentionally runs into Haruhi and is the only normal human in the SOS Brigade. Even though Haruhi is the title character, the story is told through his viewpoint. Through narration and dialogue, he provides his insight, perspective, and opinions on the series’ events. Kyon is often annoyed by Haruhi’s demands, but also is bewildered by her. Kyon likes to look at Mikuru, and often comments on how cute she is.

Yuki Nagato
Yuki is a biblophile humanoid interface created by the Data Overmind, whose responsibilities involve monitoring Haruhi and the investigation of an unexplained “explosion of data” three years prior to the present story. She possesses an ability to manipulate her surrounding environment.

Mikuru Asahina
Mikuru is a time traveler from the distant future who is assigned to investigate the reason behind the inability to travel to any point in time before three years prior to the present story. Mikuru is a soft-spoken girl who almost always willingly follows Haruhi’s demands. Haruhi loves dressing Mikuru up like a doll, and Haruhi is quite jealous of her and Kyon’s relationship.

Itsuki Koizumi
Itsuki is an esper who, like the other members of “The Agency”, suddenly acquired the power to explore Closed Spaces and combat Celestials three years prior to the present story. He is fairly carefree and can be found always smiling. However, Kyon always seems to be annoyed by him.

It’s no secret that I love Itsuki, but I’m going to come forward with my love for my OTP of the series, ItsukixHaruhi. I know this pairing doesn’t have a vary large following, but I can’t help but love it. I see evidence for it in the show (I can’t touch the manga though, that art is… not my taste.) Too bad I don’t have the Haruhi figma so I could pair them up together… but then I thought… I have Revoltech Haruhi. So I had fun with the two!

I feel like such a little kid playing with ym dolls XD At least I have them love each other now, before I used to make it so my dolls kidnapped each other and held themselves for ransom. Something I plan on telling my therapist when i get them later on in my life XD

Revoltech Haruhi is much taller than Itsuki, so that bothered me a lot, but I managed to get them to work~

Drago says hi! I also have to excuse myself for my absence, I suck XD I’ve just been taking some time to relax now that the exams aren’t coming so close to one another! And a way that I found to do that is by looking at ItsukixHaruhi fanart, and out of that inspiration spawned these pics! If I can, I try to pose my couples with each other with my figmas, though the only combination I have so far is KonataxKagamiku ;-; Though I gotta admit, this Haruhi high has made me want to get all the girls in their figma glory >.<

It appears a legitimate Japanese ticketing website has the movie listed to be shown on February 6, 2010. See here (if you can read Japanese). Under February, it says 2月6日～ (or 2/6 for the new Haruhi movie). So Haruhi fans rejoice or be somewhat cautious about the movie <cough> endlesseight <cough>. For now, here’s an interesting poster from a long time ago for a such a movie…

The movie is called “The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya” and is about Kyon finding himself in a shockingly-normal, Haruhi-less world. There is also a light novel with the same title (4th in the series). I haven’t read any of the light novels, but I am expecting the movie being based on the light novels (how much of it is in the light novel, only time will tell).

MY 2 CENTS

I’m in the boat of people who liked the Endless Eight the first couple of times, but didn’t find the last 6 episodes of the idea particularly exciting. So I’m definitely looking forward to this movie, however cautiously, since season 2 didn’t really give me the Haruhi fix like I expected. Although, I’ll admit I had really high hopes for the second season. The idea of Haruhi disappearing seems like it would make for a good story line and funny moments. And so the 3 month countdown to February begins.
