I am disappointed in myself for just discovering this band a week ago.

Harvey Danger was a pretty great rock band from Seattle up until a few months ago when they broke up. I’m seriously livid that I missed their career.

Their ‘last hurrah’, if you will, is a b-sides and rarities album called Dead Sea Scrolls that was only released at the shows on their “Final Tour Ever!” tour.

This is the first taste I’ve had of this band’s music but I’m seriously eager for more.

Here’s two tracks from the release.

Harvey Danger – You Look So Happy (demo)

Send Harmonix your picks here.

Great feature that’s been a long time coming. If “Flagpole Sitta” and “At Your Funeral” aren’t available to download by November 1st, I’ll be very disappointed in the internet.

Obviously, user input isn’t the only necessary component in getting a song onto the game, so even if Harvey Danger gets the most votes in a landslide–i.e. justice is served–who knows if Harmonix will be able to get through enough red tape to actually bring the song to Xbox Marketplace and whatever it is that PS3 owners use (Netscape?).

We’ll have to wait and see how much of an impact this request engine can have amongst all of the legal and creative factors. No matter what, it beats the hell out of Guitar Hero’s Request a Song service which is just a drop down menu of Butt Rock’s greatest hits.

2005 erschien das Album “Little By Little”. Die Band entschloss sich das Album kostenlos auf der eigenen Website anzubieten, dazu wurde auch eine Begründung abgegeben:

We embark on this experiment with both enthusiasm and curiosity—and, ok, maybe a twinge of anxiety. Why are we doing this? The short answer is simply that we want a lot of people to hear the record.

However, it’s important that people understand the free download concept isn’t a frivolous act. It’s a key part of our promotional campaign, along with radio and press promotion, live shows, and videos. It’s a bet that the resources of the Internet can make possible a new way for musicians to find their audience – and forge a meaningful artistic career built on support from cooperative, not adversarial, relationships.

We realize that digital files are the primary means by which a huge segment of the population is exposed to new music; we also believe that plenty of music lovers in the world will buy a record once they’ve heard it – whether via radio or computer.

Und das geht es, zusammen mit den schön formulierten Texten, wie die zauberhafte Entschuldigung: “But if you wonder why I never wrote you a song, it’s because happiness writes white”, oder diese Festellung aus “Cream and Bastards Rise”: “You don’t have to be a genius, but it helps to”.

“Little by Little” ist durchwachsen, bietet gute Laune und Melancholie, persönliche und politische Texte, verliert dabei aber nie den roten Faden aus den Augen und lässt sich daher hervorragend in einem Rutsch durchhören.

The song is Flagpole Sitta by a band called Harvey Danger. They people doing the dancing are from a New York new media company called Connected Ventures and, impressively, the single-shot video was filmed in just one take.

So, this is one of the albums that I’ve suggested as much, if not more, than almost any other

So, this is one of the albums that I’ve suggested as much, if not more, than almost any other album.

There are two big reasons for this.

The first reason being that it is absolutely one of the best somewhat poppy indie rock albums I’ve ever listened to, with catchy melodies, touching and thought provoking lyrics, and a subtle lure that will keep you coming back again and again to the well crafted songs.

Reason number two is that it’s available for free on the bands website.

You should be listening to Harvey Danger’s Little by Little.

I like to measure individual songs on a 5 star basis, with anything rating a one or two star being something that really is not worth listening to outside of an album setting. There are no one or two star songs here.

The highlight of the entire album is undoubtedly Little Round Mirrors. In my mind it is one of the most strikingly beautiful songs written and recorded… well, perhaps ever.

I could list off every song on the album and have something wonderful to say about it… but here’s another thing you should learn about me quickly:

I have an extreme dislike for the modern trend where individual songs take huge precedence over the beauty and power of an entire album. Which, I suppose, is one of the reasons that you won’t be seeing a list at the end of my posts recommending a couple of songs that you should download while ignoring the rest of the album. In my mind, albums are like a wonderful novel: you need to read the entire thing to truly get the picture, scope, and story. This album is a summer evening into night, relaxing with friends, and then softly reflecting on good and bad times as the sun sets on another day. Actually, this album is very much like a DQ Blizzard. Yummy, sweet, and more filling that you might first think.

Take my advice, head over to www.harveydanger.com and get yourself one of the most beautiful albums of the past 5 years…

…and then be sad, because Harvey Danger apparently performed their last show ever a few weeks ago.

Saturday!

Let’s keep this brief. It’s Labor Day weekend. You’re probably out doing some dangerous and weird. Good for you. Right now, I’m doing the exact same thing, just with the internet apparently. and Sapporo. What else is new, right?

A brief confession: This doesn’t interest me at all. I’m trying to think of the last sonic pairing that left me just as flaccid… Oh, yeah, I thought of it. Real talk: She & Him sucked. But it takes someone like Scarlett Johansson doing music to make Zooey Deschanel sound interesting to me. I’m not telling you what you want to hear, I know, I know, but I am telling you what you need to hear.

Videos! Conrad and I are constantly emailing each other links to internet videos, partly because we get bored easily and partly because we’re sick people. For example, here’s one he sent me recently:

I have no idea what the fuck that is. It’s… Well, I just don’t know. So I sent this in response back to him:

The girl in that video, by the way, is Jenny Slate, one of the new cast members announced for the upcoming season of Saturday Night Live. Anyway, in response, I got this:

Let’s just say, it got pretty dirty from there. Including this clip from an old BBC TV movie called Secret Smile, starring David Tennant and Kate Ashfield:

Moving on…

No, really now. Seriously, moving on…

1. Someone doing a little thing to Lykke Li’s “Dance Dance Dance.”

Isn’t that just the most precious, most twee thing you ever saw? It’s wonderful. And fitting of Lykke Li, who I like quite a bit as an artist, but still tend to view her as Bjork’s international and vastly more normal little sister who uses Robyn as a deodorant.

2. And old commercial for Levi Jeans.

This clip, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, was always a really interesting, really effective bit of commercial-ing to me. So much so that I remember it years and years later, partly because of the events, but also the fact that it’s set to Air’s “Playground Love,” which is just awesome. Was recently reminded of it when listening to Phoenix covering Air. I don’t think you have to pay royalties if you’re both French.

3. A music video somebody made for Harvey Danger’s “Carlotta Valdez.”

I don’t expect you to remember this band (at all), but I enjoyed their first album, back in the 90s, and they had two after it, both of slightly diminishing quality, but they still make an interesting 90s curio item of alternarock psuedo-smarmy intellectualism. Also, Vertigo is my favorite movie.

4. The Beatles “Something”

George! A sharp, lovely reminder that “the quiet one” was a strong songwriter in his own right. This song and “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away,” one of my favorites by the group, were breezing through my mind the other day when thinking about the break up of the band. Just timeless gorgeous pop music here. It’s especially fun with this video to compare the fresh faced beauty of Patti Boyd, the star of this song and Eric Clapton’s “Layla” with Yoko, who parades around with John in outfits that make them look like Mr. and Mrs. Warlock.

5. Just for Benjamin Light:

Quentin Tarantino talking about the top 20 movies that have come out since 1992. Some of these choices are incredible displays of crap, and some are actually excellent. But excellent in a “No shit!” kind of way, which is usually how QT works.

6. MF Doom “My Favorite Ladies”

I have no real comment here, honestly. After Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Doom is my favorite rapper. How could he not be? Anyway, I was reminded of this track/discovered the video when I also heard the song mashed up with this next and last group…

7. Flying Lotus “Infinitum”

As Harvey Danger winds down with their final shows, I thought it would be appropriate to honor one of their earlier songs with a sketch. (At least I think it’s an honor.) Aside from being one of the great straight-forward rock bands with a lot of power, I’ve always admired the way that lead singer Sean Nelson crafts words to create unique, humorous and poignant lyrics that are infectious enough to get me to sing along. I was thrilled when the band reformed and released “Little by Little” since I thought I’d finally get a chance to see them live. Unfortunately, the show never happened in Dallas, so I’ve never seen them live. Harvey Danger is a great band that put out 3 great full-length albums that are in regular rotation at my house, and I’m sorry to hear of their break-up.

Harvey Danger “Carlotta Valdez”

The band offered the album “Little by Little” as a free download or donate what you think it’s worth a few years before Radiohead did the same thing, but it didn’t make the news. I paid the full amount to the band to get the physical album and it was worth every penny.

By Ryan – HodgeBlodge Merrymaker Here’s a fact you cannot rise above/ we’ll have problems (yeah) the

By Ryan – HodgeBlodge Merrymaker

Here’s a fact you cannot rise above/ we’ll have problems (yeah) then we’ll have bigger ones…

If you’ve heard of the band Harvey Danger it’s probably for one of two reasons. 1) Mike told you about them. Or 2) you remember their one hit single Flagpole Sitta. As with all Wonders, this one track got them on plenty of soundtracks and radio station rock festivals but ultimately it couldn’t get people to listen to their entire body of work.

And all those that never looked deeper than Sitta missed out on a wonderful collection of songs. Harvey Danger—which even to fans of the band is a stupid name for a band—wrote about losing a parent (Jack the Lion), wrote about what all songs are written about (wine, women, and song), and wrote about whatever Sad Sweetheart of the Rodeo is about. But to me their best song is, and will always be, Problems and Bigger Ones which is, not surprisingly, about breaking up.

Cross through the border states to the wrong side/ look away Virginia

Of course the fact that Harvey Danger got any notoriety at all is somewhat of a fluke. Formed as a college band in Seattle in 1992, the fact that nerd-rock was able to get any college-radio airplay in the time and place of Nirvana just seems ridiculous in hindsight. Then again their first real show fittingly took place about two weeks after Kurt Cobain’s death in April of ’94.

The man was very helpful but I knew he wouldn’t stay/ there used to be a baby but the baby went away

I guess given the sheer number of bands trying to make it, any time one actually does break through it’s always going to seem weird, but Harvey Danger’s big break came when an intern for London Records decided he—since he couldn’t convince his major label to support them—would personally fund an album for the band.

They got plenty of attention in their hometown, but KROQ of all places made them big. (I know we’re “LA” and all that, and maybe it’s just because I never leave Long Beach, but KROQ always feels like a local radio station to me. I’m always blown away when I hear just what kind of trend-setter KROQ actually is.) Anyway, when Flagpole Sitta hit the LA airwaves Harvey Danger lived the next 12 months like they were in a certain Tom Hanks movie. But we know how the movie ends, and judging by the fact that you haven’t heard Harvey Danger on the radio since then, you can probably figure out that their story ended about the same way.

Spiteful confrontations/Trial Separations/It’s just another present, to get past

The band went back and made another album, King James Version. There was some label trouble and ultimately there were poor sales and just a genuine lack of interest, so the band broke up. Took two years off. Got back together. Made an EP, started touring again and made a full-length album. Obviously nothing matched the success of that first album but for the last few years they have been chugging along.

Spend every day like the past is a bridge, crossing 20 years/ whispers away/ not so much/get your poison tongue out of my ear

You’ve stuck with me this long so I’ll cut to the punchline: I was 15 when I first heard Harvey Danger’s album Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone? And I’ve been listening to them non-stop since. I have never seen them live—I was supposed to once but things feel through (a whole ‘nother story)—but anyway they have announced they are breaking up. For good this time. It very nearly fell below my radar; I am embarrassed to admit that I thought they already were broken up. But I’m seeing them this Saturday night for their last show outside of Seattle—they then go back home and will play three final hometown shows.

Forswear what you undergo/ You wanted to go alone though

But before they are gone for good I just had to tell you about them. To tell you that this is a smart, funny, talented band. How many bands can quote Bob Dylan in one song and F. Scott Fitzgerald (show me a hero, and I’ll write you a tragedy) in another? Maybe this is my aggrandizing of my twelve-year love affair with them, but I honestly believe they were the forbearers of Death Cab and Modest Mouse and a lot of other stuff that you love. They tasted real success with what was probably their 7th best track from Merrymakers, and now they are playing one last show. My favorite song of theirs, Problems and Bigger Ones was on that first album so surely it wasn’t written with this moment in sight, but it really feels like it was written with this moment in mind. All bands breakup one way or another, and clearly before it all had even begun for them, Harvey Danger had made their peace with it all ending.

I guess I’m going to have to too.

It doesn’t make me cry to hear Dylan say/ most likely you go your own way/I’ll go mine…I’ll go mine…

On the other hand, I was stoked to learn that they giving away their final album for free.

That’s right, free.

Of course, there’s a rationale behind this free album. And if you want to read that explanation, be my guest.

If, however, philosophy isn’t your bag, baby; you can just skip the theatrics and download the damn album.

Decent show last night! Good song flow, decent enough banter. Not bad!

I grabbed a copy of the Jukebox The Ghost album, one of the openers at the Harvey Danger show, and I gotta say, it’s pretty awesome. It kind of sounds like Ben Folds (Five) meets Queen. Check it out!

Of the new stuff I played this week, I think Owl City and Christina Courtin stood out the most. Owl City sounds kind of like Death Cab For Cutie except not quite as boring. And Christina Courtin reminds me a lot of New Jersey’s Amanda Duncan. Once I get a chance to check these two out more, I’ll let you know if they hold up.

And here’s the rest of the playlist…

Last night, Harvey Danger played their last show ever in NYC at The Bell House in Brooklyn as part of their farewell tour. I’m really sad to see the band go, but at the same time, I’m not surprised either. The band had never really been profitable, nor do they really fit in anywhere.

I had never been to The Bell House before and no one I talked to about it had ever heard of it before. It turned out to be a really nice venue. There’s a swanky-ish bar when you first walk in that has a decent beer and wine selection for a venue. The room that the bands play in is big enough to hold maybe 400 people, but still maintains the ability to be relatively intimate at the same time. My only real gripe was that the sound was a little louder than it needed to be. Outside, there was a sweet stenciled sign that said “Beware of ‘dog.’”

I didn’t really watch the first opener much, but Jukebox The Ghost was pretty awesome. They’re from Philly, though I’d never heard of them before. They have a pretty sweet indie sound with a piano and make enough funny faces while playing that even if they had sucked, it would have been entertaining to watch.

Harvey Danger somehow–I’m really not sure of the back story for this one–got John Hodgeman to introduce them. It was hilarious, watch…

Once they came out on stage, they were incredible. They played for about 2 hours and 40 minutes, longer than I’ve ever seen any band play for before in my life. By the end, there wasn’t really too much left that they hadn’t played. It was really awesome and didn’t get boring at all…even if we were all insanely tired by almost 2AM when we finally walked out.

For the encore, they came out and did a lot of Q&A and took requests. A bunch of them.

They sounded really on all night too, even towards the end of the set, they were still playing well and having a great time on stage. Here’s a video of them playing Cream And Bastards Rise…

MTV’s “5 Dollar Cover” is being filmed in Seattle right now, directed by Lynn Shelton. The show is a telenovela starring local musicians. Which ones? Well, the Maldives, Thee Satisfaction, Thee Emergency, Harvey Danger, Champagne Champagne, Tea Cozies, the Lights, Weekend, the Moondoggies, and others. The filming schedule includes places like “Mark Gajadhar’s studio” (he’s the drummer in Past Lives, and half of Weekend), “Sean Nelson’s apartment” (Harvey Danger singer, music writer), and “Moondoggies car.” It also includes Chop Suey (8/10; Thee Emergency performance), the KEXP studio (8/15; Tea Cozies performance), Easy Street Records (8/22; Moondoggies’ performance), Hidmo Eritrean Restaurant (8/23; Thee Satisfaction performance), and the Wild Rose (8/25; the Lights performance). Looks like shooting ends the beginning of September in Missoula with the Moondoggies

As the undeniable cultural momentum of this age finds reminiscence rock bands from Blur and My Blood

As the undeniable cultural momentum of this age finds reminiscence rock bands from Blur and My Bloody Valentine to Creed and Third Eye Blind reuniting for triumphant and remunerative victory lap tours, Seattle’s Harvey Danger is doing what it does best: the exact opposite of what logic and ambition demand.
From an announcement on the band’s website:

After 15 years, three albums, hundreds of shows, and far more twists and turns than we ever imagined possible, we’ve decided to put Harvey Danger to rest. The decision is totally mutual and utterly amicable. Everyone is very proud of the work we’ve done together, but we’ve also come to feel that our collaboration has–in a very positive way–run its course. We’re all eager to try our hands at other projects, musical and otherwise. Of course, putting an end to something we’ve been working on since our early 20s can’t help being accompanied by a soupçon of melancholy. Nonetheless, as the Chambers Brothers remind us, time has come today. Rock bands have life spans, and Harvey Danger’s has been longer and more eventful than even we would have predicted.

Everyone in Harvey Danger is very excited to have a last chance to play together in public, and to bring the band’s energetic and assured live show to the cities that have felt the most like homes away from home for the band over the years. They hope you can make it.

Okay, we all know about Rock Band. In fact, unless you’re living under a rock (or North Korea

Okay, we all know about Rock Band. In fact, unless you’re living under a rock (or North Korea), I think it would be fairly difficult to find anyone who doesn’t. But that’s not the point I’m trying to make…kinda. The makers of Rock Band and Guitar Hero seem to be vexed on putting a crap load of metal into their games. While that’s not bad, it makes the hardest tiers unbearable for people (like me) who dislike metal.

Because of this, I created my own list of songs that should be in Rock Band. From Indie Pop to Hard Rock, this list has it all–well not really. It’s actually quite limited. The list features bands like Collective Soul, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Third Eye Blind, and Band of Horses. As always, lemme know what you think should be added to the list!

The Ringer 2005 Sam – I was always very nervous to see this movie. But this is the second time I

The Ringer 2005

Sam – I was always very nervous to see this movie. But this is the second time I’ve seen it in this TBS time slot, though the first time it’s been on since the conception of this blog, and it’s only slightly embarrassing to watch now. Why does anyone let Johnny Knoxville act? He’s good at what he does; being stylish and hurting himself. Why give him a script?

The movie ends with some sort of celebratory concert that features The Kids of Widney High. Liz and I went to the Good Bye Sober Day concert on New Years Eve 1999 in San Francisco to see Mr. Bungle, Fantomas and the Melvins. The Kids of Widney High opened the night and was one of the most memorable concerts I’ve ever seen. Will always remember that lead singer with his “2000″ novelty glasses thrusting his head past his microphone. That show was amazing, one of the best nights of our collective lives. We picked up a KROQ Christmas compilation cd because it had a KoWH song, and as it turns out, one of the other songs on that compilation became one of my favorite songs ever. It’s called Sometimes You Have to Work on Christmas (Sometimes) by Harvey Danger. It just so happens that the drummer for Harvey Danger at the time that song was recorded is sitting right in front of me as I type this. And now it looks like the world is about to end outside. Thanks, The Ringer.

Tim – I did not see this film, but I have seen the South Park episode with the very similar storyline, many times. I’m not judging. Similar ideas happen all the time, and occasionally Sam experiences some kind of infinite loop that ties down syndrome to the end of the world.

Josh – N/A

Things said during movie (not-review):

- “What is Yaz?” - Evan

- “Great! Now they’re going to have to release an ad explaining this ad!” - Sam

Here are some playlists I have made over the past week or so. I have listened to all these songs so

Here are some playlists I have made over the past week or so. I have listened to all these songs so many times it would drive anyone else insane and they still produce the same feelings for me. Some I have known for years, some for weeks. But they all are very special for some reason or another. So I figured I would make a playlist to attempt to summarize the overwhelming feelings each one gives me eveytime I listen. It is not surprising that some artists have produced a couple of songs I feel are worthy for these playlists.

Understanding my knowledge of the music world is very limited, I still do feel these songs came to me for a reason. Most of them are free to listen to on youtube or myspace if you desire sampling.
