After all the time spent gathering information together, character building, world building, procras

After all the time spent gathering information together, character building, world building, procrastinating and drinking a nice cup of Earl Grey one sits down to the computer to find that they are completely and utterly…not ready to begin the process. You’ve worked hard silencing that little voice and locked him in a box but somehow that little bugger has managed to pick it with his little claws and find his way out.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!

The jaws that bite, the claws that catch” -Lewis Carroll

Frabjous day is upon you and you’ll need your pin in hand to slay your own Jabberwocky. And so I want you all to think about this for a moment. Alice said she believed in 6 impossible things before breakfast, so I want you to do just that.

1. Turn your little Jabberwock into fear.

Yes, that’s right. I wan’t you to become fearful of him. Now, many people might tell you to just stop listening to him, but that never works for me. So, I want you to let your fear of him overwhelm you. You’re not good enough. The story you’re writing? It’s absolutely horrid. I hope you never write it. What good would it do?

Now. Right there. That’s it. Feel that little bit of defiance bubbling up in your stomach? That’s the sword to slay your Jabberwock with. Why let your hero have all of the courage? Fear can make a powerful starting off point, if you have the courage to face it, the courage to type that first word, you’re well on your way my loves.

2. Write on the first scene.

This is the most important, but don’t fret, and do not start by introducing your character. Think about what happens in the beginning of your story and where the first bit of action is. Start in the middle of it. Don’t lead up to it, that won’t due with keeping up your readers attention. For instance, if you have a character that lives in a boring village. Don’t write about how boring it is for the first fifty pages. Start the story. Tell us about the sudden bit of commotion or the sudden fire that leaves him homeless. Tell us about the monster that destroyed the playground and kidnapped his sister.

3. Pick a comfortable place to rest your bum.

This may have been something that should go towards the top, but, if your like me, I think about how uncomfortable my seating is as I begin writing. Make sure your place is someone you can reach your notes or jot things down in some way. Make sure you can successfully type in a good comfortable posture. Er, about the thing where you expect your parents, friends, and family to leave you alone while you write? I’ve found that’s a joke for me so develop patience. Before you get up to take out the garbage or fix supper or toss ball with the boys make sure you jot down what you want to do next. If you’d had a thought like ‘that would be cool later to pull after this’ write it down because you wont remember after your mind derails and then has to get back on the track. Believe me.

4. Write down little things.

Did a character just say something intriguing that makes you think there may be something ahead? Make a list of these things. Did your character just see something strange? Write that down to. Even if there is a minor character that you just threw in there for the purpose, write them down too. You never know, you might see them again, and you might need them. Perhaps they’re important later on, you just don’t know it yet.

5. Become a Villain.

Strap on your Johnny Depp or Hellena Carter shoes and step into great character acting. You are going to become an actor for a few minutes. You’ve got your bad guy/girl figured out. They are after your protagonist for whatever their reason and are ready to start some chaos. But, this is the time to stop and make sure you have them fleshed out. Do you happen to know if they like crumpets? tea? What their temper is like or if they wear pink bunny slippers at night by the fire? Don’t forget to ask questions like this to your villain so that you can make a good juicy character that laughs in the face of Mary Sues.

6. Find your Muchness.

“You’ve lost your Muchness” -Hatter

Don’t lose yours. In Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” the dormouse asks Alice if she has never seen a drawing of Muchness. In truth, it cannot be drawn. It is inside of all of us, we just have to find it. It’s the believ you can do it. This, arises out of uncertainty, fear, insecurity, turmoil and then courage, curiosity, love, energy, and belief. It comes from struggle, and then success.

When you start writing I want you to think of these things but also challenge you to make your own list of impossible things. Each day, or each week if you can. What are the 6 impossible things that you will believe–and make happen–today? Write them down now, and then get going!

“Fairfarren. Farewell, May you travel far under fair skies.” -Hatter

What are you waiting for?

Sherri

TV Review: Alice Network: SyFy Genre: Comedy/Romance/Adventure/Action Year: 2009 I’ve noticed

TV Review: Alice

Network: SyFy

Genre: Comedy/Romance/Adventure/Action

Year: 2009

I’ve noticed that in most societies kids grow up with stories that are often told over and over again and in so many different ways but the basic elements of the story are still there. We have come to expect that these stories are going to hold onto important details, but interpretation can vary. I’ve noticed that one of the big stories that this happens to is Alice in Wonderland. From 2000 to present, there have been three major looks into the world of Alice and I am going to run a little theme by reviewing each.

Alice was made in 2009 by SyFy as an attempt to modernize the story of Alice and her adventures in Wonderland but also pull in elements that are important to the history of the story. The miniseries also was partnered with Tin Man, a really awesome adaptation of the Wizard of Oz that is also updated. The series is a two-parter that starts off with hearts everywhere and typical SyFy fashion where we are seeing images that are blurry and hard to tell what they are. There are blackjack tables and women dancing in a casino and lots of red and white. This kind of sixties psychedelic atmosphere is on purpose, kind of poking at the way drugs were very mainstream and Alice was really popular in the sixties because of the weirdness.

We go to the real world where Alice is a judo instructor and pretty awesome. She dismisses her class and has a private lesson with her boyfriend Jack Chase and kicks his ass and reminds him that he is coming over for dinner that night to meet her mother, Carol (a joke for Lewis Carol) for the first time. Alice heads home with groceries but not before stopping and giving a bunch of apples to a homeless man. When Alice gets home, Carol warns her about the dinner and meeting Jack, a sign that Alice apparently kills the relationship soon afterwards. We also learn that Alice is a obsessed with finding her father, who has been missing for ten years.

At the dinner Jack is charming and perfect and is getting ready to go when he gets a text, telling him to run. He tries to get Alice to go meet his parents on a spur of the moment trip and Alice panics, thinking its all too sudden. He gives her a ring that is a family heriloom and when she refuses it, he puts it into her pocket and he leaves. She goes after him when she realizes what he’s done and sees him getting attacked and taken down an alley. She goes after him to be stopped by an older man, The White Rabbit, and she fights him off, the Rabbitt getting the case the ring had been in and Alice chases after him. She turns a corner and going full speed, can’t stop in time before she falls into a large mirror standing up against a wall.

Alice falls down a vortex of not awesome and lands on a patch of grass and flowers in a hospital or a building of some sort where there is ankle deep water (Alice’s tears) and she sees the Rabbit and goes running after him. She ends up outside and discovers that she’s not in Kansas anymore because there is no real ground except for bridges and the buildings go on forever in both directions. A giant beetle thing shines a light on Alice’s arm and a green marking appears that doesn’t come off and she sees the Rabbit again. She goes after him and ends up in another building where there is a tiny room with a table and a bottle. She picks it up and reads “Curiosity Killed the Cat” and she is captured in a white padded room. She is taken away by the giant beetle thing that floats around in the sky and sees that there are others like her in boxes as well, all with the green markings, including the homeless man she’d seen earlier.

Alice uses her trusty hair pin to unlock the latch on her box and falls into the lake below. She manages to swim to shore where she meets Ratty (the character she latches onto in the story) and he takes her to the Tea Shop where she learns that in this world, emotions are treated like stocks in the stock market, run by the Door Mouse. Ratty takes her to Hatter, a very hot Andrew Lee Potts, who is dressed like someone from the seventies, lol. He gives Ratty a bottle of Excitement and explains that they are in Wonderland, a place that was written about 150 years earlier, when Alice from the human world came and changed everything. Alice finds out that she is an Oyster, a person who provides emotions that the residents of Wonderland cannot feel for themselves and have to take chemically, and are harvested for the Queen of Hearts’ Casino. Alice wants to find Jack and Hatter decides to take her if it means that he can score points with the Resistance, a group of underground rebels who oppose the Queen.

Hatter and Alice head out and they head to see Dodo, one of the leaders of the Resistance, played by Jim Curry, where Hatter asks for a way to get Jack back in exchange for the ring that Alice wears (the ring Jack had given her that she managed to get out of the box before the Rabbit took off with it). Hatter and Alice don’t realize what Alice’s ring actually is and is actually the Stone of Wonderland, the device that controls the Looking Glass that allows the residents of Wonderland to travel to the Human World. Dodo wants to take the ring and Hatter, protecting Alice, gets shot in the chest. Alice runs and Dodo pursues.

Hatter manages to fight off Dodo and Alice uses her cool judo to kick the crap out of him and save Hatter. They head back to the surface and turned out Hatter was wearing a bullet proof vest, the reason why he wasn’t hurt by getting shot. Meanwhile, we go over to the Queen’s Casino where we meet the Queen, played by Kathy Bates and the King played by Colm Meady. The Queen is mad that her ring is missing and Rabbit brings them the box he’d recovered from Alice. They open it to find out the box is empty and the ring is still missing and she has White Rabbit executed. She then calls in the Walrus and The Carpenter to find out if they can bring The March Hare back from the dead to find Alice. The Carpenter doesn’t have much to work with since the March Hare had no head and replaces it with a cookie jar (lol, best part of the entire movie I think) and March Hare is back online. The Queen sends him out to find Alice and bring the ring back.

Hatter and Alice head back to the Tea Shop to find out that the March Hare and the Queen’s men are already there, looking for them. Hatter and Alice are ON A BOAT! in the next scene and are pursued by the bad guys. Hatter docks in a forest and tells Alice they need to split up so they can lure the bad guys into a track so they’ll get eaten by the Jabberwocky. Alice goes the wrong way and Hatter has to save her from the beast and the pair end up falling into a trap, escaping the monster. They are found by the White Knight, an old insane man who is “nuttier than a box of frogs” according to Hatter.

But he’s a Knight from the white chess kingdom and seems to be doing well for himself living out in the forest so Alice and Hatter go with him to his home. While there, Alice and Hatter get into a fight about the ring because originally Hatter was going to go with her to her world but now wants to join the Resistance and use the ring to gain their favor. Alice leaves in the middle of the night and let’s herself get captured by the March Hare (after having a dream where we met Dinah, her cat, who turns out to be the Cheshire Cat). She goes to the Queen’s Casino and meets the Queen. She is then surprised to find out that Jack is there and unharmed because is actually Prince Jack Heart, the son of the King and Queen. He had stolen the ring and blames Alice for stealing it from him. Alice then learns that Jack is engaged to the Dutchess (its Gail from Rookie Blue!!!) and he gives her a watch before she is taken to the crazy doctors, Dr. Dee and Dr. Dum, to be interrogated about where the ring is. This ends the first episode.

Thoughts on the first episode: interesting choices. We have seen a lot of fun and interesting choices so far with the real world as opposed to Wonderland. I like that in Wonderland, they look like humans, but aren’t really because they don’t have the ability to feel feelings the same way a human can. They need Oysters to grant them the feelings that come naturally to humans. And I like that feelings aren’t basic in this world, there are all kinds of feelings that you don’t think about: love, passion, clarity, forgiveness, clear concious. But the thing that they will play with later is the fact that it seems all smiles and rainbows for these feelings, we don’t see them wanting to feel bad feelings, like anger, fear, regret, envy or depression. Of course no one wants to feel those things, but its what makes us human is those feelings.

Beginning of the second episode! So Alice is stuck inside her own mind and being tortured by the doctors as she begins to remember about the day her father disappeared. Hatter and Charlie the White Knight head out to find Alice and Hatter knows that she went to the casino. The manage to get in by pretending to be performers and knock out the guards. Charlie figures out where she is using his “psychic powers” and they get inside of Alice’s own head and rescue her. They escape to the roof and beat up a few guys and have to take mechanical flamingos to get out. During their escape, Jack is being interrogated by the Duchess who works for the Queen. Jack knocks out the bodyguard and ties up the Duchess to escape himself. The three others get shot down and end up in the lake from before and swim to shore where Alice explains that Jack is the prince and that he gave her her father’s watch, which she figured out in the casino. She realizes that her father is in the casino somewhere and Jack wants to help her even though Hatter doesn’t think its a good idea. The pair find Charlie and head into the forest, Hatter making Alice a promise to get in touch with the Resistance for help and leaves her with Charlie. Hatter goes into the city and gets a hold of the Door Mouse and gets a message to the Resistance. Hatter gets back and Alice starts to feel like she might be trapped in Wonderland forever, and Hatter is about to kiss her when Jack shows up suddenly.

They learn that Jack is actually a memeber of the Resistance and had stolen the ring originally to keep it safe in the human world. He has been sent to get Alice and help her find her father. Hatter decides to not go with them and instead let Alice go with Jack alone. She shows where she hid the ring and her and Jack head out to find the Catepillar, the head of the Resistance. Hatter and Charlie end up following them at a distance. Jack and Alice get to the city and meet with the Catepillar, the Head of the Resistance and he explains that the human emotions are bad for the residents of Wonderland and that is why the Resistance wants them gone. Alice and Jack go to the roof with Catepillar and are captured by the Queen’s men and meet the Carpenter. She realzies that the Carpenter is actually her father but he doesn’t know who she is. Jack and Alice are unable to convince him that she is his daughter and are taken into custody.

During transportation of Alice, Hatter and Charlie decide to attempt to rescue her. Hatter attacks but Charlie loses his nerve at the last minute and abandons them both, Hatter unable to fight off the others and is captured as well. Everyone is transported to the Casino where the ring is returned to the Looking Glass and it starts working again. Jack is sentenced to be killed and locked up, Hatter is put in a room with the annoying Docs and Alice is banished from Wonderland (the King felt that it would be easier and less messy). Alice is taken to be put through the Looking Glass and sees that innocent children are being taken to be harvested and fights off the guards and heads back to the casino to save her father and everyone else.

Charlie realizes he made a mistake and was a coward and so gathers the bones of the White Knights and sets them up far away from the Casino to make everyone believe he has an army. This distracts everyone as Alice sneaks around the Casino and Duchess breaks Jack out of prison, telling him that she always loved him, and wanted to save him. Hatter is being hurt by the Tweedle Docs and March Hare comes to see him. Hatter manages to fight him off and escape after killing him. Alice runs into the room with all of the Oysters and manages to fight off a few guards, and Hatter shoots one about to attack her from behind. They barricade the doors and Alice realizes that the only way to get out of there would be to wake everyone up and get their emotions going. She wakes up the Oysters and they start to panic, beginning to overload the system that makes the emotion potions with bad feelings.

Alice also manages to wake up her father, The Carpenter, who is on the monitor. He and Walrus get into a fight and he shoots The Walrus. He goes into the room with some guards and tells Alice he remembers her, the system now overloading and the Casino starting to break apart around them. Walrus shows up, still bleeding and shoots Carpenter, protecting Alice from the shot. He dies as Hatter shoots Walrus and the people are now really scared, they all evacuate as the casino is falling down on their heads. Carpenter dies and Alice has to leave him behind, Hatter getting her out of the Casino. Everyone leaves, except for the King who knows that he is never going to get what he wants out of the Queen, and that is her love. He lets himself die in the falling Casino.

Outside the Casino after it has fallen, Alice and everyone gather outside and surround the Queen, demanding that she give back the Stone of Wonderland. This will send the Oysters home and cut off the world of Wonderland and the real world. The Queen has lost all power and authority and surrenders the ring. Alice and the other Oysters start to get ready to return to the real world. Alice is offered to become Jack’s Queen, though she turns him down because she knows that she doesn’t belong there and he should really be with the Duchess. Hatter comes to say goodbye instead of going to the real world like he’d originally hoped (he doesn’t want to go because he misunderstands Jack and Alice’s talk and hug). They don’t get to say anything that they really want to before Alice reactivates the Looking Glass. She goes in first and wakes up in a hospital. She learns from her mother that she had only been gone an hour in the real world and that time was different in Wonderland. She realizes that her father is never coming home and tells her mother. They go home and she takes down all of the stuff about her father and boxes it up. She is depressed and sad and David, the guy who found her, shows up to see how she’s doing. Alice is surprised then to see that “David” is actually the Hatter! He changed his mind and came for her and they kiss! The End!!!

So, how did this interpretation do compared to many Alice in Wonderland versions? Pretty good. The Hatter is great and has a lot of great lines, and the show really know what it wanted to do. It made the differences between each character distinct and decided what style and theme it wanted- modern mixed with sixties hippie/popular culture. It worked because they made it work. I liked the differences between Wonderland and the real world too, they also gave Alice a little more to do and a mission than just wandering around Wonderland aimlessly, which is great. Alice and Hatter are perfect and have a great dynamic and I was almost angry when I thought that was it, they weren’t going to be together. Everything about this version is great and you need to watch it if you haven’t!

Oh and Watch Tin Man too, if for anything, to stare into Neal McDonough’s baby blue eyes for three hours.

The Disenchanted Forest

The Disenchanted Forest

When coming up with an idea for our digital story, we weren’t sure which direction to take. While many stories take the ‘extended world’ approach and attempt to either allow for more possibilities or interactivity in a story as the Creating an Interactive Adventure post from The Fiction Engine points out, others simply present a linear story in a new, digitally enhanced way. Our story ended up somewhere in the middle, and became a choose your own pulp fiction more than anything. The final piece is technically 6 separate stories with their own character, but all crossover at at least one point, and some are dependent on each other, such as the snail and slug Twitter feeds.

We decided to use a different medium for five of the characters, but have The Matter Hatter character appear in each of these stories to make the whole seem more cohesive. The snail and slug stories both met their resolution by intertwining. We used a Twitter hashtag created by The Matter Hatter to believably connect the two gastropods, and then used Twitter’s reply feature to create conversations between them, leading to the end; a photo of the two together. We enjoyed the irony of such slow creatures delivering news in the fastest way possible. For Justin Treeber, (a talking tree that the Hatter introduces to song), we used time-lapse photography and motion keyframing in post to create a live drawing of his story. Using a marker to draw specific moments, and then erasing drawings for dramatic effect, we thought it would be a good way to convey the emotion of the piece, and uploaded the finished video to YouTube (see below) with some whimsical, vintage filters. This highlights the raw and unassuming nature of artists’ videos on YouTube, and is obviously making vague references to Justin Beiber.

Stereotypical caterpillars in the media eat a lot, so we thought Instagram would would convey overeating the best, as many users post photos of their food. Again, the Hatter makes an appearance as a dietician. Lastly, the gnomes’ adventures are documented in a travelog, referencing the travelling garden gnome phenomenon, which has been explored before, including in Amélie. The Hatter appears in the background for the observant eye to enjoy spotting, and the final image of the gnomes in the forest includes every other character at the end of their arc, effectively acting as a chronological end point. These stories can be read in any order using he main site, and the use of social media and sites with the ability to comment means these characters can be interacted with as well.

Our social media marketing strategy revolved around raising awareness. We created a Facebook page and Twitter hashtag in the lead-up to the main site going live in order to build hype and update anyone interested in the project. The Facebook page and Twitter hashtag carried similar messages, but having both allowed people to subscribe to and interact with the project in the manner they preferred. As the Justin Treeber video had finished uploading, we shared it on Facebook and Twitter as a ‘sneak peak’ of the digital story. Staggering content like this makes people more interested in coming back, and a short video is the most accessible and least intimidating medium we could use to introduce audiences to our digital story. This way, they become invested in the story world, and will be less distracted by the layout of the other stories. We were also able to instantly share the site the moment it went live, giving people a sense of real-time interaction. Clay Shirky’s statement from the flipped lecture, ‘sharing information is something we’re biased to do and to like doing’, is part of why we wanted to use social media as much as possible in this piece. We wanted people to be able to easily share and interact with our story using tools they were already very familiar with.

Saturday, October 6th: Grab a hat, any hat! It’s MAD HATTER DAY today, the second silliest day of the year. It’s time to party!

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is home to the Mad Hatter, a silly, crazy character. October 6th is the date chosen for Mad Hatter Day because he wears a top hat with a slip of paper that says 10/6. The paper is probably an order to make the hat, which costs ten shillings sixpence. But, we’ll take it as a reason to celebrate.

In the past a lot of hatters did end up going mad, or crazy. In the ‘old’ days, the days where you weren’t properly dressed without a hat, mercury was used in the hat making process. Now we know better, and know that mercury is not necessarily our friend, at least to be handling or touching. So now, hatters don’t go crazy. Well, except on Mad Hatters Day … or if they’ve had a little too much “celebrating”.

Look for every reason to celebrate life, even if it does include a mad hat or two.

Mad Hatter and March Hare (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

After seeing that headline you are probably thinking, “Angie, why would I want people to think I have lost my mind? That’s crazy talk!” Well, there is one very important reason for that: it’s Mad Hatter Day here in the United States.

I know, some of you in Great Britain are probably huffing and puffing, saying that I got it all wrong, that Mad Hatter Day is June 10 (10 June?). Well, we here in the US have to do things differently than you, obviously, so our day is October 6.

What is Mad Hatter Day exactly? Started in Boulder, Colorado in 1986 and gaining some popularity a couple of years later (I admit that I was not aware of this day until a few days ago), it is a day that people celebrate being silly. Think April Fool’s Day without all the crazy—sometimes mean-spirited—pranks.

So put away that shaving foam, fake vomit, rubber spiders, and itching powder. You do not need them. Instead, try the following four things that will probably make people think you have lost your mind, which will make them all the more fun to do.

1. Dance Like Nobody is Watching

I once read a short-short story on a blog that featured a woman who began dancing in her office while everyone looked on while thinking, “What the hell?” (I’m sorry, dear blogger, but I’ve forgotten who you are or I would give you credit for that story.) The woman continued dancing wildly all the way to the parking lot outside. She did not care what others thought of her. She just danced.

Perhaps on this Mad Hatter’s Day you can do what the woman in the story did. Just dance like nobody is watching. I often bust out in the Charleston or Soft Shoe Shuffle when I am out and about. Perhaps you can try those dances, too. And please, if you do, end it with a sassy pair of jazz hands!

2. Strike Up Random Conversations with Strangers

Go out and just start talking to a stranger about something silly.

Example: You see an old woman on the street so you run up to her and start talking about fluffy cotton candy bunnies with crazy eyes and strawberry flavored kitty cats who weep for baby Jesus. You can then do one of two things: you can run away before she has a chance to respond OR you can stand there and see what she says to you, if anything. I’m willing to wager she might be the one doing the running away.

Bonus: switch up your accent every few words. For instance, you can go from a southern U.S. accent to a southern England accent, and then try on a South African or South Korean accent. You could even begin talking in foreign languages to keep things interesting.

3. Break Into Song Out of the Blue, Just Like They Do In Musicals

This is related to #1. In fact, you could even combine it with #1 and put on a whole production of West Side Story (or any musical of your choice). Invite some of your friends along for the fun. You could turn it into a flash mob at the mall or something like that.

Say, perhaps you could get the random stranger you strike up the conversation with to join you in a chorus or two. You never know!

AND DO NOT FORGET THE JAZZ HANDS!

4. Have Random Tea Times Throughout the Day with “The March Hare”

English: Illustration of “A Mad Tea Party” (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Be just like the Hatter in Alice in Wonderland and indulge in a good cup of tea while rambling on about nonsensical things. Just grab a big stuffed bunny (the March Hare), some tea-things, and announce “Tea Time!” when you get the urge. You can sit down in the middle of a sidewalk (or a street if you’re daring…or suicidal), a public park or other type of meeting place, or even at work.

Use some good judgment if you plan on doing this at work. Your boss might not appreciate what you are doing and give you your walking papers.

How do you plan on celebrating Mad Hatter’s Day? Have you ever celebrated it before? If so, what sort of things did you do to shock and amuse people around you?

He first met her in the deanery gardens in April 1856. The day was marked out in his diary as one of great significance. Carroll was 24 years old – twenty years older than Alice.Though in later years he was to claim that the character of Alice was based on no actual child, in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland there are many references to Alice Liddell.

‘Still she haunts me’ - Carroll’s poem possesses a dreamlike yearning and is filled with poignant memories of that balmy summer’s day when he rowed along the river with Alice and her sisters. And, whatever the truth of the matter, whether Carroll harboured a sexual desire or simply an intense affection for Alice and other prepubescent girls, he certainly recorded his interest in a vast collection of photographs – many of which the artist destroyed before his death. Some surviving images can be viewed at the National Media Museum in Bradford, though you have to telephone to make a prior appointment.

Lorina and Alice Liddell, posing as Orientals

He also destroyed a page from his diary in 1863, after which his close relationship with the Liddell family was to come to an abrupt end. In later years other members of Carroll’s family explained that the page referred to Mrs Liddell being unhappy at Carroll courting the children’s governess. It is thought by some that the Red Queen in Through the Looking Glass was based on this Miss Pricket, described by Carroll in the following way - “The Red Queen I pictured as a Fury, but of another type; her passion must be cold and calm; she must be formal and strict, yet not unkindly; pedantic to the tenth degreee, the concentrated essence of all governesses!” So, she was firm and not unkindly, yet would such a mature woman really be attractive to the same man who meets the twelve year old Alice and writes of his disappointment to see how she has grown: “changed a great deal and hardly for the better.”

Alice grew up to be a beautiful and assured young woman. She was courted by Prince Leopold, Queen Victoria’s youngest son, who she met while he studied at Oxford. But, Victoria was adamant that her son should only wed a princess and Alice went on to marry another Oxford student by the name of Reginald Hargreaves. However, it can be no coincidence that Leopold named his first daughter Alice, and the prince was godfather to Alice’s son who was christened as Leopold.

Despite the loss of her first love, Alice went on to become a successful society wife. It was only after her husband’s death when she found herself to be in need that she finally resorted to selling her original copy of Alice’s Adventures Underground. In 1928, it was auctioned at Sotheby’s, achieving £15,400 which was four times the reserve price. In 1948, it changed hands again, that time bought by a group of American businessmen who, in turn, presented it to the British Museum.

In 1932, to mark the centenary of Lewis Carroll’s birth, Alice visited New York to receive an honorary doctorate from Columbia University. The trip was exciting but exhausting. It led to a deluge of letters and interest from the media, and her death in 1934 was marked by an obituary in The Times. Her ashes were interred in the family tomb in Lyndhust, Hampshire which is engraved with the following words : The grave of Mrs Reginald Hargreaves, the Alice in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

Dreamchild (1985) is a film scripted by Dennis Potter with Carroll’s imaginary characters realised by the puppeteer, Jim Henson. It tells the story of Alice’s journey to a Depression era New York with flashbacks to her privileged Victorian youth with Carroll, who is played by Ian Holm. The part of the older Alice is taken by Coral Browne, who went on to recieve a London Evening Standard Film Award for Best Actress. Sadly, I can only find it available in VHS tape format in the UK, but it is available in DVD format from Amazon in the US.

Hello All. Today i shall be writing a review for “Alice, Madness Returns”.

Technical information:
Publisher: Electronic Arts (EA)
Release: June 16th 2011(UK)
June 14th 2011(USA)
Genre: Psychological Horror and Action-adventure

“Alice: Madness returns” is a third person platform/action game. The game takes you through Alice’s journey into Wonderland, getting answers to some very mind boggling questions. The whole of Wonderland shows her everything that has happened since her first journey (Alice by American McGee PC) and what she needs to do to get said answers.

Alice is a young girl around 17 years of age. You see her first in an Orphanage where she has been brought up from a young age due to a tragic fire her parents and sister had died in. This is the building blocks for her “madness”. If you have played the first Alice, then you will know about why she has been set on this second journey into Wonderland, if you haven’t, got play it! NOW, or carry on reading…..Each chapter of the game begins with Alice herself in Victorian London and you travel around, finding out the next steps for her journey. You follow a white cat in the first one to where this Scottish lady stands atop the roofs of London looking after her pigeons. If anyone is like me i instantly thought of the old lady from Mary Poppins, a nice sweet old lady who would give Alice a helping hand…oh how i was wrong. After a very creepy introduction to this woman you are thus transported into Wonderland.

Wonderland, what a BEAUTIFUL place it is. The artwork is fantastic and the graphics superb for this game. Bright colours, lots of flowers and pretty green grass. I was really impressed with how Spicy Horse and EA had depicted American McGee’s interpretation of what Wonderland would be a second time around. Alice is dressed in the famous Blue and white dress seen on the cover with her, with a small introduction in how to control Alice in-game. I was completely impressed how the controls where easy to use and she moved exactly how you wanted her to (no, she didn’t jump 4 times when i only pressed it once.) and you have a triple jump element to it which brought either great defeat to those who like to estimate or control with those with logic.

The Vorpal Blade is the first weapon Alice comes across. This was like butter in my hands. I went mad with the hack and slash action you could perform when encountering enemies. Over the game you collect a total of 4 weapons which include a peppper grinder and a teapot. Now i don’t know if anyone has tried to fight with a Teapot, but as far as i am aware you cannot shoot green tea from it so that it wills whatever is in your way…..anyway….the weapons are upgrade able another element to the game i really enjoyed. However, to upgrade said weapons you must collect teeth. I personally felt like a fucked up tooth fairy collecting shiny teeth to make myself stronger.

As you progress through the game the only thing that seems to get a bit on the “mundane” side is the enemy encounters. You get a lot of the same enemies in each Chapter. Yes, there are new additions but they like to try and fuck with you putting old ones in on the odd occasion to see if you can still fight them and kill them without going into Hysteria. Hysteria is probably one of the most fantastic things in the game. You see Alice turn into a raging angry teenager, the ones mums and dads dream about their children being, but its much more creepy and disturbing than that. This is where Alice can hack and slash to her hearts content with more power, but a catch of only half a rose left for her life.

The platforming element to the game did surprise me. It is not your normal “trolling through levels” platform game. it gives you a means of exploration, objects to overcome and a high sense that you are in full control. Along with the fact you have Alice’s DOORS that you pass through to give you a short comic like scene showing the progression of the story so far and thus allowing you to recap and then go onto finding everything in the next part of the chapter.

Overall, the game is fantastic. I really enjoyed listening to the story and playing out her adventure. It took me a good few days to complete and does get progressively more difficult as you get further engrossed into it. One of my main highlights (being a woman) is the dresses and outfits that they had Alice dress in. They all perfectly co-ordinated with wonderland and looked magnificent. If i could get them all, i would! Collecting bottles and memories to add to the story really made me captivate Alice as her character and how her mind set had developed over the years. Getting into the game i saw myself familiarizing where she was as i have ready Alice in Wonderland more times than i would like to admit. It gave me a sense of wonder and amazement as i glided, slashed and teapotted everything in the game. The story line can be creep, characters mentally insane and enemies you would only dream of. I would highly reccommend the game to anyone who likes horror, platforming and Fairytales.
