WINNER

Once again, I am honored to be invited back to judge another exciting round of Tuesday Tales. I don’t know if it was the lazy days of summer or the mad rush to the start of the school year, but many of our usual suspects did not come out to play today. One would think this would make my task of selecting a winner far less daunting. Thankfully, no such luck. It was another week of well crafted tales from a very talented group of authors. This week’s winning entry was also our first entry of the day. Laura Huntley’s (@LauraHuntley) Just Like Her Mother is a flash fiction masterpiece not only dark and dreadful, but downright creepy. Congratulations Laura. With your permission, Haunted Waters Press would like to feature your story in the Fall 2012 issue of From the Depths.

By Laura Huntley @LauraHuntley

I weep that she isn’t pretty like she used to be. I can’t see her as it’s dark and dank in the crypt, but I can feel her. She clutches me to her frilly pinafore, her pigtail tickles my forehead, but her arms are no longer the chubby soft flesh of a little girl, she’s just bones. I had tried to plead with her, I begged her to swap souls right at the end, but she just sobbed and placed her dainty hands over her ears, she thought that by hearing me speak to her, the madness had taken over her sad little life.

Poor little mite, she was just like her mother, haunted, pained, multiple personalities all screaming at her inside her head. Her mother had committed suicide; the voices got too loud and urged her to do the most terrible things. Little Amber Rose started then; the whispering, taunting, laughing voices started scratching at her mind.

She never believed that I could help her, of course, her porcelain doll with ringlets and a dead white face and eyes that clinked shut, she thought that I was another one of the voices, here to destroy her. That made me sad, I only ever said nice things to her, I told her that she was a good little girl and that she should try and ignore the nasty words. But, just like her mother, the volume increased, and they told her to kill the dog, that it was a naughty little dog, and she did. Her father wept, a small part of him grieved for the unfortunate, bloody mutt, but he mostly felt the loss of a sweet little daughter who was, as he had secretly suspected, just like her mother. He had to end this family curse.

My first Honorable Mention for “Best Use of the Word Crypt” goes to Rebekah Postupak aka @postupak.

“We laid him in the family crypt, the nurses and me. They came out of duty, I know, but they knew all the right things to do, how to wrap Jesse up with the right chemicals, that sort of thing. They didn’t say a word except sorry, just crept in, did their work, and crept out again, soft heels swishing in the dark.”

My second Honorable Mention for “Best Use of a Crypt” goes to Toni Wyatt aka @Toni1777. Brain transplant surgery in a crypt. Who would have thought?

Thank you again. You all have mad flash fiction skills! Keep writing.

The answer: me.

My most recent published short story – Monster – can be found in the Summer 2012 issue of From the Depths, the quarterly literary journal of Haunted Waters Press. It’s a very lovely publication. Click on over and take your time perusing the art, prose and poetry on display – it’s worth it!

Over at The Galaxy Express blog, I was recently interviewed by Heather Massey. We chatted about the above short story as well as Blue Nebula, my upcoming release from Carina Press and the sequel to Blue Galaxy. While your over there have a click around the blog. Heather has been tirelessly promoting science fiction, science fiction romance and e-books for a few years now and there’s lots of delectable content to be found on this blog. Enjoy!

Last, but not least, I was over at Contact: Infinite Futures blogging about my favorite spaceships. Click on over to see what they are. Do you have a favorite? I’d love to know. Again, this blog has been regularly providing lots of top-notch, geeky content and is well worth an explore. It’s the blog of Carina Press’ SF/SFR authors and I can vouch that they’re an interesting crew.

No letter. Just a summer challenge to try new things, relive some special moments, and enjoy life. Here’s a little checklist to help you get started.

Read a classic

Write daily.

Walk in a river.

Sleep in a hammock.

Try oysters…or eat more.

Go barefoot.

Take moments for yourself.

Spend time with your loved ones. (You never know what the next season will bring.)

Play like you are ten years old again. Think mud pies & catching frogs.

Laugh often and smile more.

Explore your world.

…but no hitchhiking.

“I am honored to be invited back as a guest judge for Tuesday Tales. Stevie, you were full of surprises this week. First, with the rocket ship and rearview mirror photograph and then with the increased word count. I think it was the combination of both that inspired so many wonderful stories. Again, another difficult week to be sitting in the judge’s seat. I actually had a top seven this week and after a considerable amount of internal debate, I narrowed it down to two. I didn’t flip a coin, but it was literally that close. In the end, I chose Diane Dooley’s (aka @DianeDooley) Monster as the winner of the week’s Tuesday Tales. It was fun, inventive, and well written. In under 300 words she made me feel empathy for an unsightly alien creature. Congratulations Diane. With your permission, Haunted Waters Press would like to feature your story in the Summer 2012 issue of From the Depths.”

TUESDAY TALE:

Monster

by Diane Dooley

In hindsight I should never have gone searching the galaxy for him. I should’ve stayed on the space station, safe in my hazy half-dreams of imminent rescue. I wish I’d never tracked him down; never injected him with that scant twenty measures of truth serum.

He had never loved me. The pain of the truth had ripped a scream from my body. But at least then I had a heart. Now it’s a tumor. Inside my chest it pumps out only bile and bitterness.

Twice I saved him, breaking him out of two jails at the cost of my own freedom. But still it wasn’t enough. He offered his eternal thanks and his friendship. I took it, grateful for even that.

He travels the stars with someone else now. Her he loves, though she has never sacrificed for him the way I have. The scars of the wounds I bore for him remind me of how ugly I am. His wife, of course, is perfect. “The most beautiful woman in the universe.” That’s what he called her, as the serum had its brutal way with him. And with me.

I’m on Earth now and I think I’m dying. The gravity pulls me down, lays me low, defeats me every second. Nobody is kind; no one cares. I’m a scarred monster from outer space, after all. They examine my body with morbid interest, excited for my eventual autopsy, these stumpy little creatures all dressed in white.

Here I lie, watching the wet fall from the dark sky, the clouds obscuring the stars. My heart thuds slowly, releasing beat after beat of sadness and pain. I’ll die here, then, on this blasted floating rock.

I don’t even care. It’s my own fault. I should never have gone searching the galaxy for him.

HONORABLE MENTIONS!

The following entries were among my top contenders and deserve an Honorable Mention for making my decision so difficult. If you did not name your story, I gave it a working title:

Breaking All the Rules (Because I Can’t Stick to Just Three Honorable Mentions) Disappeared by Wakefield Mahon aka @WakefieldMahon, Take a Ride with Death (working title) by Bob Mahone aka @Computilizer, Hitching a Ride (working title) by Aaron Beyer aka @agbeyer, and Seriously Twisted (not a working title, just seriously twisted) by Rebekah Pastupak aka @postupak

**

From the Spring 2012 issue of From the Depths:

Dear Readers,

There is a star on the calendar today. It marks the six month anniversary of Haunted Waters Press and the second issue of From the Depths. When we embarked on this new chapter in our lives, we knew it would be a struggle. We knew there would be money going out and little or none coming in. There would be friends and family who would support us, and sadly, those who secretly hoped we would fail. There would be writers eager to jump on board, and others who would snub us for being too new. But we accepted the challenges and pushed forward. A penciled list of goals and a loose timeline served as a business plan. We designed a logo and claimed our little virtual spot on the web. We embarked on a marketing campaign to get our name out there, and soon we were accepting submissions for the first issue of our literary journal, From the Depths.

So why the star? Rejection. Yes, as we discovered, even publishers and editors get rejected. As part of our marketing campaign, we applied to several listing sites providing resources for writers. We were rejected. We were told that the vast majority of small, independent publishing companies won’t survive beyond the six month mark. “Write us when you publish your second issue.” It felt like a slap in the face. We couldn’t help but be reminded of the first rejection letters we received as writers. They expected us to fail, to give up, to walk away. We placed a star on our calendar and moved forward.

Well, here we are, six months and two issues later, defying the odds and not even close to closing our doors. In fact, things are moving along at an accelerated pace. We are moving beyond our little virtual spot on the web and into a designated space with walls, furniture and our name in little gold letters on the door. We’ve purchased a printing press and a large assortment of type, ink and other printing sundries. Still, there is more money going out than coming in, and there are those who still expect us to fail. But, there are others more important. Those who support us and have faith in our endeavors. They are our friends, our family, our writers, and our readers. Thank you. We couldn’t have done it without you.

This issue of From the Depths is about change. What better symbol of change than the butterfly? Much like the journey of the caterpillar, Haunted Waters Press is in a constant state of change. We set out on our journey inching our way along the branches of the indie publishing world. As we checked off items on our penciled list of goals, we entered the cocoon. And now, as we progress along our timeline, we are beginning to emerge. We don’t know what color our wings will be, but we know are getting ready to fly to unexpected places. Thank you for taking this journey with us. Enjoy.

Best regards,
Susan Warren Utley
Savannah Renée Warren

In my journey of trying to find a literary agent to publish my first novel, I have been working on smaller publishing goals as well. A few months ago, I submitted a poem to Haunted Waters Press and was all to pleased to know that it would be featured in their debut online issue!

While the issue is not out in its entirety until December, you can find a sample of some of the works HERE, including my poem! I hope that you’ll mosey over and read it, as well as the other works that are featured.

And if you ventured from there to here, welcome to the Menagerie! Feel free to stay, relax, and rest a spell.

Honorable Mentions:

Best Use of a Shoal
There were so many wonderful entries competing for the title of “Best Use of the Word Shoal,” that I just couldn’t decide. So this honorable mention goes to the author who put a shoal to the best use. Tracey Hanson @thansenwrites takes the win with her use of a shoal as an ideal place to dispose of a body. Well done, Tracey!

Made a Big Splash (Best Use of Photo)
Craig Smith @CraigWFSmith earns the Made a Big Splash award for best use of the photo in his somber tale of two ill-fated lovers. Well done!

Most Haunting Imagery
Wonderful. Simply wonderful. As I read the piece, I could see the images unfolding before my eyes. Congratulations Candie L. Campbell @candicecampbell.

Master of Suspense
Congratulations Michael A. Kozlowski @MAKozlowski for earning the Master of Suspense award for his tension filled, chilling tale. Superbly executed and wonderfully descriptive. Who doesn’t love a good set of salivating fangs in the moonlight?

I’m Too Sexy
Unlike Right Said Fred, Michael earns two Honorable Mentions this week, proving he is not a one hit wonder. The I’m Too Sexy award goes out to Michael A. Kozlowski @MAKozlowski whose seductive sneak peak at two lovers on a shoal is sexy, tender, and beautifully written. Michael, you are too sexy for your shirt! (If you have no idea what I am talking about then you are too young for the catwalk.)

For the Love of Water
For the Love of Water is a special Haunted Waters Press Honorable Mention awarded to the author whose work best conveys a deep connection to water. Congratulations Emilia Quill @Emilia_Quill. You stole my heart.

The Judgemaster has gone and dun it… I think Michael’s head is going to explode from being too inflated. (He also won the other awesome sauce prompt writing challenge from <s>@</s>caramichaels <s>#</s>MenageMonday)

Now on to our Winner….. dun DUN DUN!

Per the words of the judgemaster:

I am so grateful for the opportunity to judge Tuesday Tales. The quality of work submitted was exceptional to say the least. Congratulations to all of you who put yourselves out there today. Well done! I do wish I could choose more than one winning entry, but alas, I cannot.

So without further ado, today’s Tuesday Tales winner is Jen DeSantis @JenD_Author. Her paranormal dreamscape is skillfully crafted and seductively haunting. In my deliberations I came back to this piece time and again, reading, contemplating, and finally succumbing to the voice in my head whispering all along, “This is the one.” And what of the mystery prize? With your permission, Haunted Waters Press would like to feature your story in the upcoming issue of From the Depths. Congratulations Jen!

Aspiring Paranormal-Suspense author. I play with ghosts and monsters, and I like it.

http://jendauthor.wordpress.com/

Bubbles effervesced in the shoal, teeming in the water. I blinked and looked back at the surf line. She had been there, her luminescent figure floating mere inches above the dark, wet sand. But when I rose to run to her, she’d disappeared. It wasn’t like her to be fickle, and I doubted that death would change her so greatly.
What made her retreat?
I looked around and then back at the shoal, waiting for answers.
The sun paled and my skin broke out in gooseflesh as a cool wind kissed my cheek.
“Come,” the wind whispered.
And I followed.
