La Universidad de Sevilla confirma su apuesta por las nuevas tendencias y la música electrónica (que no todo lo que organice la hispalense tiene que ver con música clásica, copón) y organiza el segundo Electroshock US que se celebrará del 5 al 7 de noviembre en La Pista Digital (mira por aquí el mapa) y en la Sala WAM (Hotel Los Lebreros).

Chris Horne es la única persona de la que no se puede decir que tiene influencias de Boards of Canada porque conoce a los hermanos Eoin desde el colegio, y juntos han compartido multitud de grupos, risas y cervezas en los pubs de Edimburgo. Comparte con ellos su afición al sonido de los sintetizadores setenteros, las melodías agridulces y las texturas desenfocadas. Desde que lanzó en 2002 su primer EP “Pylonesque”, ha probado ser un individuo creativo que ha sabido forjarse una carrera única en cuanto a belleza se refiere.

Voodoo Etnies

Tras el nombre de Voodoo Etnies está el nombre de uno de los más prometedores productores de hip-hop español. El sevillano se caracteriza por fundir en sus ritmos la tradición rapera más clásica con influencias de lo más variopinto. Ha trabajado con MCs como Tote King, Putolargo y Shotta, con quien gira en los últimos meses. Tiene recién editado el EP “Unfinished Works” con el sello británico A Future Without, que cuenta entre sus filas con músicos tan reputados como Adrian Utley, de Portishead.

Hauschka

Volker Bertelmann se ha pasado muchos años en bandas de pop y rock, peor su pasión es el piano de cola. Acompañado de ese instrumento mezcla irreverencia, delicadeza y géneros de distintas épocas. Lo suyo no es solamente tocar el piano sino que introduce (literalmente) en el distintos objetos, juega con sus piezas y consigue sonidos que no podríamos imaginar que vienen de un instrumento tan clásico. En su último trabajo “Ferndof”, incorpora al discurso la presencia de dos chelos, formación con la que se presentaría en Electrochock US 2009.

TENSION Co.

La parte local de la noche la ponen Tensión Co, dúo electrónico formado a finales de 2006 por Miriam Blanch (aka MIR), laptop y bajo (que toca, procesa y manipula en directo), y José Mª Pérez-Flor (aka Synthetic Mouse), laptop.

El grupo sevillano mezcla el noise más atmosférico, el minimalismo digital, la electroacústica y músicas de difícil tránsito que requieren una escucha un poco más comprometida. La música de TENSION Co. es electrónica ambiental oscura y minimal, ruidista y de intensidad creciente. Consiguen crear extrañas y personales atmósferas que enganchan y desconciertan a la vez. Para sus actuaciones en directo se arman de dos laptops y un bajo asistido con Pd (Pure Data) y tocado con diferentes objetos y pedales de efectos, con los cuales desarrollan su música o no-música, experimental, tensa e hipnótica.

Dj bRUNA

Sala Wam (Hotel Los Lebreros), a las 00:00 h. Entrada libre.

Carles Guajardo, quien artísticamente se hace conocer como bRUNA, tiene por objetivo poner el acento feliz en sus sesiones de DJ. Esa habilidad ha sido demostrada de sobra en magníficas sesiones para salas como Club13, festivales como Sónar e incluso novedosas actividades “escolares” como la Red Bull Music Academy celebrada en Toronto en 2007. Y esa intención, también, es la misma que subyace en su disco de debut, el luminoso “And It Matters to Me to See You Smiling” (spa.RK, 2009). Es algo que queda claro desde el mismo título, que certifican el tono desenfadado y alegre de la mayoría de los temas y el infeccioso acento pop con el que compone sus melodías.

Bedroom Community

El sello islandés Bedroom Community es una plataforma que funciona en parte como comuna artística y en parte como refugio creativo. Como comuna artística, porque cada vez que producen un disco, los cuatro miembros de la comunidad (Nico Muhly, Ben Frost, Valgeir Sigurðsson y Sam Amidon) participan en el proceso de grabación, de manera que siempre existe un cierto tono de complicidad, un “sello” de calidad que los hace únicos. Y como refugio creativo, porque los cuatro músicos suelen trabajar en otros entornos, como músicos de sesión, arreglistas o productores para grandes estrellas del pop. El resultado de esta actitud es un puñado de discos tan inconformistas como delicados. Pequeñas piezas de orfebrería que mezclan pop, rock, ambient y música electrónica, y que gustan de adornarse con recursos de música contemporánea, arreglos medievalistas y detalles robados a la música de bandas sonoras.

A Electroshock US vendrán con su último proyecto “The Whale Watching Tour”, un espectáculo en el que los cuatro músicos, acompañados de violines, guitarras, percusiones, un piano de cola y todo tipo de cachivaches electrónicos, tocan un repertorio en el que se mezclan algunas piezas sacadas de sus distintos discos, otras hechas expresamente para la ocasión e incluso alguna versión. Todo ello acompañado por una espectacular puesta en escena, que incluye visuales.

Dj Undo

DJ, productor y propietario de un sello discográfico, Undo es un hombre de muchas caras. Muchas son las actividades que realiza este músico que tuvo una carrera sólida antes de convertirse en la revelación de la Barcelona de principios de milenio. Gabriel Berlanga ha sido compositor, vocalista, guitarrista y bajista en numerosas bandas de pop-rock desde muy pequeño. A mediados de los años noventa, descubrió el emergente mundo de la electrónica de baile, y se dejó fascinar por él. Gabriel empezó a coleccionar discos, pinchar y experimentar con los sonidos electrónicos: tocando viejos sintetizadores, loop-samplers y efectos de guitarra.

Η εκδήλωση στοχεύει να αναδείξει τη «συνομιλία» μεταξύ τεσσάρων μουσικών, που κινούνται στον ευρύτερο χώρο της σύγχρονης μινιμαλιστικής, πειραματικής και ηλεκτρονικής σκηνής, με κλασικότροπες, τζαζ και «indie» αναφορές, των Hauschka, Pantha Du Prince, Pamelia Kurstin και Morgan Packard, ανιχνεύοντας τόσο ομοιότητες, όσο και αντιστίξεις. Η ιδέα συνίσταται σε δύο ισόχρονες και ισοδύναμες εμφανίσεις την ημέρα -χωρίς την έννοια του «support»- η πρώτη, ενός πιανίστα σε σύγχρονο ύφος και η δεύτερη, ενός μουσικού της electronica.

In Gedanken bin ich schon beim Freitag. Die Schulung läuft gut. Hier und da mal einen kleinen Schnitzer, den alle in irgendeiner Übung machen, aber ansonsten  sieht es sehr brauchbar aus.
Die theoretische Prüfung ist recht lang. Rund 60 Fragen. Da gibt es noch bisschen was zu üben. Egal wie es wird, Freitagabend werden wir uns dann in die Tiefen der Kultur stürzen:
Es geht auf die Burg Trausnitz zur Open-Air-Aufführung der Oper “Die Zauberflöte”. Es ist eine klassische Inszenierung – ansonsten hätten wir uns auch keine Karten gekauft.

Ich wurde jetzt mit einem Einkaufsverbot für meine Hobbys belegt – denn in ein paar Wochen habe ich Geburtstag… Grade jetzt, wo es anscheinend ein paar neue und interessante Sets gibt.

Da ich als Überschrift “Gedanken” gewählt hatte, ist mir auch gleich ein interessantes Zitat in die Hände gefallen:

Ever since a recent interview with Fat Cat A&R Dave Howell, I’ve been itching to see their 130701 imprint artist Hauschka work his voodoo on the piano. Having warmed the inner mechanisms of my ear with album Ferndorf and recent EP Snowflakes and Carwrecks, I’ve been beguiled by Volker Bertelman’s (the man behind the pseudonym) gelatinous piano music.

Perhaps having similarly grown up in a small town in rural Germany I can relate to the Heimat-freude that resounds within in his music; his Ferndorf is my Oberjesingen (albeit with a much more evocative name: Ferndorf means ‘remote village’, Oberjesingen doesn’t sound as cool, just typical of southern Germany where lots of places end in ‘ingen’). But what I really wanted to see was how he plays with the inner workings of his piano to add new sounds to his unique take on contemporary classical music.

And no better a setting to see him in: the Union Chapel is grand and spiritual, demanding an attentive audience who won’t be prone to chit-chat after a few beers. Gangly and mop haired, Hauschka played with no accompaniment and none was needed. Texture is added to his pieces through means I was unable to determine, a little man could’ve been under the hood raking the strings in a steady staccato for all I know.

Sharing an anecdote about passing through security with a collection of mini-vibrators he’d just acquired from a vending machine in the men’s loo of Dusseldorf airport, it seems authorities don’t usually here the excuse “I put them in the piano” very often. But when he does, the results are more than worth the hassle of a few discerning looks from uniformed men with x-ray machines. A chorus of trembling strings engulf us while he plays.

He dedicates standout piece of the evening, ‘Zahnlücke’ to the women in his family who have been blessed with gaps between their front teeth (as Zahnlücke means ‘tooth gap’) but his finale ends with him throwing a bag of ping-pong balls inside his instrument and playing so rapturously that every so often one of them pops into vision.

Like the whizz kids who take their bikes apart, just for the satisfaction of putting them back together again or computer geeks who open up their computers to play with the wiring, I walked away admiring and awaiting the next time I may see the results of Hauschka’s ‘prepared piano’ skills and the number of nerd hours he must spend playing with different embellishments and learning far beyond the obvious of the black and white keys.

Morgenrot: Old Manhattan Sunrise with Falling Burning Piano

Morgenrot is an amazing animated short film by Jeff Desom, a film director from Luxembourg. The film was created to provide visual work for the haunting music of Morgenrot, the new single by Hauschka (Volker Bertelmann). Hauschka, is an experimental musician/composer living in Dusseldorf, who is noted for his creative piano works. Morgenrot is about a composer who’s plagued by writer’s block; Desom uses the image of a burning piano dropping off a building to serve as a recurring dream of the composer. The animation is reconfigured from early twentieth century photographs that Desom found while browsing through the vast collection of the U.S. Library of Congress, as well as from some old used postcards of New York that he purchased at a flea market in Paris.

Composed of sepia images from early 20th century New York, Morgenrot is graphically similar to Arcade Fire’s Black Mirror, particularly as it begins at sea. But it has an enduring motif all its own, with more contemporary echoes. The grainy, smoky, memory-laden and exquisite short film unveils evocative, slightly ominous imagery of Manhattan. It breathes with an air of poetic déjà vu, like a dream you’ve just been jarred awake from and, even though you know you’ve just experienced it, you can’t quite remember the outcome.

Mooie rustige muziek om bij weg te dromen…

Pura poesía la imagen del piano cayendo de un edificio del viejo Nueva York de los años 20. Es obra del realizador alemán Jeff Desom que utilizando fotografías de la librería del Congreso de EEUU junto con la música del pianista Volker Bertelmann, alias Hauschka, compone un proyecto precioso que desprende sensibilidad y sensaciones.

The instrumental awesomeness of Hauscka is so stirring and beautiful that it’s a natural next step to interpret it visually. Rising to the challenge in a vibrant, verdant, and thickly coloured animation style, is Overture. Founded in 2004 as the artistic collaboration of Jason Brown and Aya Yamasaki Brown, their description of what they’re about is as lovely as the work they produce:

“We are two dreamers letting our thought waves overlap and mingle to realize the ideas and goals of our own imagination as well as the wonderful folks we work with. Through animation, illustration, and any other means available, we devote ourselves to bringing these possibilities to life.”

Their Vimeo page holds three beautiful animated shorts set to three different Hasucka tracks. Titled “Bryum & Kapok 01: A Dream”, “Bryum & Kapok 02: An Idea”, and “Bryum & Kapok 03: A Lilt”, each one is dreamy and lushly complex…

Músicos de vanguardia que ponen la banda sonora a una película que les inspira, proyectada al unísono y en directo. ¿Suena bien, no? Pues eso es lo que propone la IV Mostra de Música i Cinema, CinemaScore, que se desarrolla desde hoy jueves y hasta el domingo en el Teatre Municipal de Benicàssim. En España es único en su especie. Cuatro grupos de Alemana, Francia, España y Estados Unidos. Tres películas de los años 20, 30 y 80 y una colección de cortos de un director novel norteamericano, entre ellas el primer largometraje de dibujos animados de la historia y uno de los films que más ha influenciado la estética de Tim Burton. Una actuación por día, casi todas creadas ex profeso para el festival, a tres euros cada una. Y dos presencias estelares: los franceses NFL3 y los norteamericanos Balmorhea (vídeo de arriba).

Hablamos con José Luis Cuevas, director del festival, que cuenta con el apoyo del Aula de Cinema i Creació Juvenil de la Universitat Jaume I, el Ayuntamiento de Benicàssim y, este año, el Goethe Institut, el Videoclub Stromboli de Valencia y el Hotel Voramar. Un joven castellonense enamorado de la música experimental, que empezó de adolescente con el catálogo de discos Like a Biscuit, continúo con su propia formación musical, Nük, que después creó con Toni Falomir  Septiembre Recuerdos para editar sus canciones, lo que finalmente desembocó en el ciclo Sons. Ha trabajado en el Espai d’Art Contemporani, codirige el festival Tanned Tin y también lleva el sello Borne Recordings, con promotora musical incorporada. Un tipo inquieto, vamos.

¿Cómo surgió la idea del CinemaScore?
Todo empezó hace seis años en el Teatre del Raval de Castellón, a raíz de una gira de Migala en la que llevaban imágenes creadas por un director de cine amigo suyo. Nos pareció una idea muy interesante lo de fusionar música experimental y cine, lo programamos a través del ciclo Sons, vimos que tuvo muy buena respuesta y la cosa fue creciendo. El Aula de Cinema de la UJI nos apoyó desde el primer momento, pero al año siguiente lo tuvimos que trasladar al Auditori de Vila-real por falta de apoyo en Castellón. Finalmente, el Auditori de Benicàssim se volcó con el proyecto y este es el cuarto año que funciona como CinemaScore.

¿Hay propuestas similares en España?
Cada vez hay más iniciativas del mismo estilo, como el In-Edit (el Festival Internacional de Cine y Documental Musical de Barcelona) o actuaciones aisladas en el Festival de Cine de Gijón, que relacionan música y cine. Pero aglutinando las proyecciones y la música en directo en un festival es el único de momento.

¿Cómo se realiza la selección de músicos y de películas?
Nosotros escogemos los grupos que sabemos que trabajan con este tipo de planteamiento o con proyecciones elaboradas en sus conciertos y después ellos hacen la propuesta de la película. A nivel técnico es muy complicado tener copias de 35 milimétros de películas tan antiguas como las de este año y para el Auditori de Benicàssim también es muy difícil compatibilizar la música en directo con la proyección, así que las películas se pasan en vídeo. Por eso también contamos con la colaboración de institutos cinematográficos.

¿Los grupos componen la música ex profeso para el CinemaScore?
Precisamente ese es uno de los grandes atractivos del festival. Salvo en el caso de NLF3, que actúan el viernes, el resto de conciertos son específicos para el CinemeScore y algunos se basan en la improvisación. El trabajo está en encontrar grupos que trabajen poniendo música a imágenes, como es el caso de Balmorhea (actúan el sábado), que se dedican a hacer bandas sonoras para cine. Puede que tengan una propuesta previa, porque cada vez hay más grupos que hacen este tipo de cosas, pero muchos lo trabajan exclusivamente para el festival. 

El festival se estrena esta noche con la presencia de un músico de Castellón, el percusionista Enric Mofort de Duometrie, afincado en Holanda. ¿Cómo surgió la colaboración?
Enric estuvo actuando en la exposición de John Cage en el Espai d’Art y le comenté que viniera al festival. También es amigo de Sergio Ibáñez, del Aula de Cinema de la UJI, así que posteriormente nos reunimos para concretar la propuesta. Será un concierto arriesgado, con un concepto bien preparado y elaborado pero basado en música improvisada. La idea es convertirlo en una producción, conjuntamente entre Duometrie y CinemaScore, para poderla llevar a otros festivales como el de Gijón. Porque la verdad es que lo que más nos interesa es respaldar a los músicos de Castellón para que crezcan fuera.

¿Qué perfil tiene el público del festival?
Básicamente es de Castellón y de Valencia. Es un público muy amplio, plural, y eso nos gusta mucho. El CinemaSocre es un festival abierto, no es un festival indie con el patrón de gente joven que le gusta la música alternativa.

Por último, ¿se quedará finalmente el Tanned Tin en Castellón?
Todavía no se puede decir nada definitivo, pero la verdad es que después de meses de incertidumbre pinta bien para que se quede en Castellón. Ya tenemos artistas cerrados y queremos anunciarlo oficialmente cuanto antes. Las negociaciones, de momento, van por buen camino.

Música en directo: Duometrie + Elena Setién & Raphael Vanoli
Película: Alice, de Jan Svankmajer (República Checa, 1988)

Duometrie es una formación de música experimental con formación clásica afincada en Holanda, integrada por el percusionista castellonense Enric Monfort (a la derecha en la foto de arriba) y Carlos Gálvez al clarinete y al bajo, aunque en esta ocasión estarán acompañados por la cantante y violinista vasca Elena Setién y el guitarrista alemán Raphael Vanoli. Versátiles en su concepción de la interpretación, su repertorio incluye el uso de la electrónica y del vídeo, la improvisación y los arreglos de música folclórica.

Alice es una película de Jan Svankmajer, artista gráfico, escultor, diseñador y poeta surrealista checo, célebre por sus películas de animación, que han influenciado a importantes cineastas como Tim Burton. Basada en Alicia en el país de las maravillas de Lewis Carroll, es una mezcla de animación o stop-motion con imágenes reales. El personaje principal, encarnado por una niña, se transforma numerosas veces en una muñeca, y el resultado es un ambiente de fascinantes dimensiones. Versión en inglés con subtítulos en castellano.

Música en directo: NFL3
Película: Las aventuras del Príncipe Achmedm, de Lotte Reiniger (Alemania, 1926).

NLF3 (vídeo de abajo) son los hermanos Nicolas y Fabrice Laureau y Ludovic Morillon, procedentes de Prohibition creadores de Prohibited Records. Se trata de una propuesta post-rock, jazzística y experimental, basada en el slowcore y en todo tipo de ritmos, que igual utiliza la potencia de las guitarras como los samples.

Las aventuras del Príncipe Achmed es el primer largometraje de dibujos animados de la historia del cine, realizado con una técnica de animación de siluetas que el propio director, el alemán Lotte Reiniger, creó para rodarla sobre la manipulación de recortes de carbón y láminas finas de plomo bajo una cámara y filmando con película pintada. La historia está basada en el entusiasmo que genera en el gran Califa el hechizo de un caballo que puedo volar por los aires. Versión muda con rótulos en alemán y subtítulos en castellano.

Sábado 25. 22.30.
Música en directo: Balmorhea.
Película: tres cortometrajes del norteamericano Jared Hogan.

Balmorhea es un grupo de Texas especializado en recrear paisajes imaginarios. Música cinematográfica en estado puro. La armonía manda sobre la complejidad técnica, con acordes de guitarra acústica, piano y violín, para crear refugios de recuerdo y de nostalgia. Llevan el sello Western Vinyl. Quizás la propuesta más exquisita del CinemaScore de este año.

The Farth in the air, Afterlife y Morning serán los tres cortometrajes que presentará el director novel norteamericano Jared Hogan. En inglés y subtitulados en castellano.

Domingo 26. 20.00.
Música en directo: Hauschka.
Película: Vampyr, de Carl T. Dreyer (Alemania, 1931).

Hauschka es el alias del pianista y compositor alemán Volker Bertelmann. Lo suyo es el piano preparado, concepto inspirado en John Cage que trata de profanar el instrumento mitificado por excelencia, y que se basa en introducir objetos en los mecanismos y en el arpa para sacarle nuevos sonidos.

Vampyr, La Bruja Vampiro (abajo, un pasaje) es la primera película con sonido de Carl Theodor Dreyer, cuya estética ha influenciado a todo el cine de terror que se ha hecho desde entonces. Un clásico que recrea un mundo onírico, lleno de fantasmas y sombras que cautivan más por la fuerza de sus imágenes que por el terrorífico relato. Expresionismo alemán del bueno. Versión en alemán con subtítulos en castellano.

OTRAS PROPUESTAS PARA HOY JUEVES

19.30. Espai d’Art Contemporani de Castelló. Ciclo EspaiCinema Primavera. Proyección de Il Divo (Italia, 2008), del director Paolo Sorrentino. Sinopsis: Hace más de cuarenta años que Andreotti es sinónimo de poder en Italia. Emerge indemne de todo: de batallas electorales, de masacres terroristas, de acusaciones calumniosas. Nada de esto le toca ni le cambia. Hasta que la Mafia le declaró la guerra. Entonces las cosas sí cambiaron. Pero la cuestión es la siguiente: ¿cambiaron de verdad o sólo en apariencia? Versión original con subtítulos en castellano. 110 minutos. Entrada libre.

Those lovely folk at Bandstand Busking have put the Hauschka busk up… go watch the videos. It was a particularly sophisticated busk with a beautiful string quartet and a rather charming toy piano.

Dean Cavanagh definitely has a soul. Dean is one of those people who is always up to something.

I first ran into him in the early Nineties when he was promoting Bradford’s first big rave events and got to know him properly when he started the Herb Garden club culture fanzine with Dave Gill a couple of years later. He went on to promote the innovative Soundclash nights in Leeds before landing a major label deal with his friend Enzo Annecchini under the name Glamorous Hooligan.

Since then, he’s forged a working partnership with Irvine Welsh, with whom he’s written for both stage and screen. The pilot of Dean’s latest TV project Svengali, a razor-sharp comedy about an innocent (Jonathan Lewis Owen) lost in the London music biz, is being released in weekly five-minute chunks on You Tube and I guess the idea is for someone to pick it up and give them the money to do a full production.

It features Sally Phillips, Jodie Whittaker and cameos from the likes of Alan McGee and Paolo Hewitt and while you can tell they’re doing it guerrilla-style, it’s funny and it’s smart and I like it.

And while I remember, new band alert: Shit & Glitter, listen out for them. They are the future of now.

Like, I suppose, many other people in blogland, I’ve started getting occasional overtures from music PRs about featuring their artists on the blog. While it’s very nice that someone is taking an interest and all that, the trouble is that they see all the punk rock stuff and immediately think that I’m into contemporary indie rock, when I’m not. I’m really not.

So many thanks to Shain at One Little Indian/Fat Cat for sending over the info on Dusseldorf-based pianist/composer Volker Bertelmann aka Hauschka and this beautifully evocative film by Jeff Desom accompanying Hauschka’s track Morgenrot.

And if that doesn’t bring you down after Sergio, nothing will. You’re up there for the duration. Hauschka has a new album (Snowflakes and Car Wrecks) out on Fat Cat and London gigs with J Spaceman and the Necks over the next couple of months.

Thanks also to UK MC RQM for the link to a new track, “a Kurt & Courtney / Sid & Nancy tribute over a glitched-out rework” of a ‘well-known tune’ by the famously litigious Boner and company, which he knocked out with the aid of “Robot Koch of band Jahcoozi”. It’s like a different language. It’s probably no surprise that I’ve never been a big fan of the original but I’m liking this dissonant, messy monster a little bit more every time I hear it.

Carl at new Manchester blog Envirosonic strikes a gentle blow against our visually obsessed culture, by “attempting to understand the effects that sound has on our bodies, the role that it plays in our culture, and the sonic politics that govern our lives”.

Carl has a lot of interesting ideas about the environment we live in – including a future project where various people will be writing about what silence means to them  – and he definitely has a very readable writing style. Here he is talking about a trip to listen to birdsong in the city centre:

“High pitched, soft, sweet melodies, whistled, twinkled and reverberated around me, audibly bouncing off of the surrounding buildings. Call and response played out in the air above me in darting panorama, sweet songs frequently interrupted by abrasive stabs of stark, brash, inharmonious mid frequencies ..

“.. What amazed me about this array of bird song was how so many layers, pitches, speeds and intensities fit together so effortlessly. Every sound had its place; warm, sweet warbles and melodies naturally filtered to dance amongst raw, brash stabs of noise ..”

Natty Rajah has emerged from a lengthy hiatus to post one of her trademark in-depth and knowledgeable reviews of reggae product, this time a collection of Lee Perry rarities from the Seventies named Voodooism. As ever, she makes me want to buy the music she talks about which, I guess, is the point. I’m hopeful we’ll get another post out of Natty Rajah sometime this year.

I was going to talk about the 14th annual Futuresonic festival, which is masterminded from a Bond-villain-style lair in Tory Trafford by the inveterate cat-stroker and former Twilight Zone resident Dr Drew, but I don’t have the time.

If you are in sunny Manchester this month however, you could do worse than visit the Klondyke Club in Levenshulme for the Blendaholics’ Ruthie and the Solutions, plus Homelife duo Paddy Steer and Tony Burnside (Saturday 21 March), and the launch of Paddy Steer’s album for Red Deer Club, Dragon’s Breath (Friday 27 March) – the latter featuring an all-star backing band which includes Graham Massey from Danny & The Dressmakers. He may have been in another couple of bands too.

Meanwhile, Tuesday nights in Chorlton are all about Elliot Eastwick’s World Famous Pub Quiz at Electrik. Some of the questions are a bit difficult, even for someone as full of useless crap and ephemera as me, but you’re allowed to cheat and it’s a laugh a minute. Seeing the quizmaster get drunker and more incoherent and out-of-order as the night progresses is worth the one pound quiz-tax alone.

Expletive Undeleted fully endorses and supports this impressive mid-week lack of sobriety.

For the past couple years I have severly cut back on the number of mix CDs to come out of my kitchen. I’ve become a believer in the idea that mix CDs can be almost like journals. I now compile songs for a mix over 3 or 4 months, and then release them in a specific order with a gentle fury upon your ears.
