The long summer is finally drawing to a close and there is a cool nip in the morning air,

The weather has been increasingly changeable with plenty of precipitation. With that in mind I thought I would post a few weather related aviation photos.

^ The hangars at the Matamata airfield looked quite dark and dramatic on this day. The structures themselves are quite simple corrugated iron over a steel frame. I like the way the patterns in the iron curved the opposite way to what you expect.

< On approach to the runway at Palmerston North through a light shower in a twin engine DA42. I was just observing from the back seat this time but have flown this type of aircraft. The red and white lights are a way of telling your vertical path angle to the runway. The lights change between red and white depending on whether you are high or low. Two of each means you are on the correct slope. Nailed it!

A bit more colour now, the hills just to the east of Palmerston North in the evening light. The windmills of TrustPower’s Tararua wind farm can be seen along the ridge. The wind farm contains 130 wind turbines and with the wind speed within the required range 85% of the time it is one of the best wind farms in the world.

To the north of this wind farm is Meridian Energy’s Te Apiti windfarm featuring another 50 windmills. The windmill tower there are larger standing at 70m tall.

The hills here were surprisingly green despite the lack of rain that they had received.

The photo below is a re-posted photo from a previous post. I thought it would fit well into this post too. It was taken just north of Pahiatua in the North Wairarapa.

The orange haze was caused by dust from the Tasmanian Bush fires drifting across the Tasman Sea. The broken cloud created the effect of streaks or beams of light.

Added a french blue haze in photoshop

When we rescued Cleo she has been previously abused, so we are very careful when it comes to the kids and her.  She really enjoys the older two, and not really sure how what to make of Sophia.

Cleo has shared her kennel with an intrusive baby, and she also allowed Sophia to hand feed her.  So, I really do not see her being harmful to Sophia.  Nonetheless, we are still careful.

Finally, Cleo started to come and lay next to me by my desk (usually she chooses to stay in her open kennel).  Sophia started to reach for Cleo’s face.  Cleo is infamous about giving kisses.  This is actually what this shot was in the middle of.  Except right after I clicked the shutter she tried to grab her tongue.

Cleo got back at Sophia and ate that very pacifier that she has in her mouth moments after this photograph was taken.  Cleo is a stealth dog.  She moves so quietly and steals toy, paci’s anything that is on the ground for her chewing enjoyment.

We are now down to 1 paci…once again.

I better go as I hear the kids complaining that “Sophia stinks!”

The morning pooper has commenced her duty or doodie.  However you wanna go with that.

Since 1pm, the sky has been hazy and members of the public have given feedback on a burning smell across many parts of Singapore.

Haze in Downtown Singapore

“The haziness and burning smell are from the fires in Sumatra, brought over by prevailing winds blowing from the southwest or west,” said the National Environment Agency (NEA).

Since 17 April, satellite images have shown smoke plumes originating from hotspots in Riau province being blown towards Singapore by the prevailing winds, it added.

The NEA said the winds are forecast to occasionally blow from the southwest or west for the next few days. During this period, hazy conditions are expected occasionally.

Here is 8 Tips on how to survive the haze.

1. Keep the haze out

Before going out of the house, make sure all your windows and ventilation outlets are closed. It is better to come back to stale air rather than a million haze particles that will stay inside for a long while. Practice this until the city’s air purity level goes up to ‘moderate’ and ‘good’. Constantly check the news updates and Department of Environment’s website to keep in the know.

2. Use air purifier indoor

Once you get back home, always turn on the air purifier to filter the air because the soft particles of haze could still seep into the house even after closing all ventilation. If you are yet to have an air purifier at home, try boiling some water and then let the steam fills up the room to clear the air.

3. Drink at least 2 litres of water a day

The key is to stay hydrated. Haze toxins absorbed by our lungs and skin force our kidneys to work extra hard, hence we need to help them in excreting the toxins by staying hydrated.

4. Stay away from alcohol & coffee

In regards to the previous point, alcohol and coffee dehydrate our system which makes it even harder for the kidneys to function in hazy days like these. It is hard to go coffee-less, but stay strong for the sake of well-functioning kidneys!

5. Boost your immunity with superfoods

Healthy diet is important at all times, but in hazy days it is a definite must. If you are determined to not suffer from scratchy throat or runny nose, then do your part: eat healthily. Make sure you have sufficient daily intake of: protein, calcium, refined carbs, and ‘good’ fats. With balanced diet – you should have enough amount of vitamin C, E, and Omega-3 without having to source them from capsules. For a balanced diet guide, read our feature here.

6. Must-have items in your bag: face mask, eye drops, water bottle, tissue, wet wipes

Stay indoor as much as possible, but when you do have to go out, put on a face mask. These items could be your instant fixes in cases of red eyes, scratchy throat, and mild trouble of breathing. After going outdoor, wipe your hands immediately.

7. Wash your hands & face regularly

As much as we try to not be exposed to the toxins, our skin still absorbs them. Be fussy about washing hands and face in public places. After going out, shower immediately to cleanse away the toxin residues.

8. See the doctors immediately after health problems

For those with breathing problems (eg. asthma) and skin problems (eg. eczema), always be prepared with your medical solutions during the haze period. For those who experience sudden health problems, especially to do with breathing, see the doctor immediately. However, be informed it is common to experience runny nose because the body produces extra mucus to excrete the toxins.

He shrunk into his scarf like a turtle as he began to feel the fog trying to sneak into his warmth. He hated the cold and the fog. The man found the cafe and quick walked into it, shaking the cold from his bones and unwrapping himself from his cocoon, taking in the warm scent of coffee and pastries. He didn’t love much and he didn’t understand much, but for now, he’ll take small pleasure in a hot cup of coffee and a warm plate of apple turnovers.

Mum sold this imaginary car she got me; I only found out because it wasn’t where I parked it the day before. Other instances it’s about me finding a lover has cheated when knocking on their door.

Though mostly; I have the youth I had before I got Alopecia for the first time. I was 13 or 15. I honestly feel perplexed at what this could mean. I wake up feeling abandoned, alone and back to reality. I do not belong here.

My original idea was to optmize the wind and have my model hold a couple of scarves. Instead, what happened was the wind was not powerful enough to achieve this result so I concentrated on optmizing textures for this series of photos.

In this photo, my subject held up her gloves up to her face as she shielded her face with the scarf. I liked the contrast of wool and rayon, so I thought to increase the division by making it black and white.

The wildness of her hair and the fact that the wind did its part by lifting it in the air made the shot. I liked the print of her scarf and how it was folded so neatly to give the shot a sense of order.

By having the sunlight behind my subject, I was able to give her an ambient glow to highlight the fur on the hood of her coat.

The focus on her eye colour brings life into the photo. You see every pore and skin follicle being contrasted by the shadows of the fur.

This is the best shot I did that day. You have something soft, furry, and silky. All of the textures are showcased here.
