KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (AP) – Former President George H.W. Bush says it’s a good thing his mother wasn’t around for the premiere of an HBO documentary about his life.

Bush says his mom taught him to avoid talking about himself and the film “41″ features Bush in his own words. It premiered Tuesday in Kennebunkport, Maine, near his summer home.

Bush, who turned 88 on Tuesday, has spent at least part of every summer since childhood in Kennebunkport, except when he served as a naval aviator during World War II.

The Maine coast and the Bush home play prominent roles in the film. The Portland Press Herald says Bush, sporting a turtleneck and a blue blazer, was asked what he was most proud about and responded: “The fact that my kids all still come home.”

Critics say a pay TV business that regularly charges its customers $100 a month is doomed.

OK, so how about a cable bill that costs less than $40?

Yes, in between that revolutionary band of consumers who say they no longer want to pay for services and channels they don’t use, and a video content establishment that says you need to support the imcumbent pay TV model to fund shows like Game of Thrones, there is … compromise.

Also read: Pay TV growth keeps slowing – 484k video users added in Q1

I call it the “cord-trimming” movement — if I’m watching my shows on my Xbox 360 and iPad most of the time, why am I paying for whole-home HD DVR service? If I’m spending half my viewing time on Netflix and HBO Go, what need do I have for Cloo, the Church Channel, CMT and dozens of other smaller cable networks I’ll never watch?

On Tuesday, I went into multi-channel downsizing mode, perusing the packages of the TV service providers in my Downtown Los Angeles area, Dish Network (s dish), DirecTV (s DTV), AT&T U-Verse (s T) and Time Warner Cable (s TWC).

Also read: Why HBO is once again TV’s most relevant network

Here are some of the cost-reducing options I found:

Dish Network’s Welcome Pack: This, my friends, is the welcome mat to nearly total pay TV minimalism. All your local channels, plus about 40 cable networks highlighted by TBS, Comedy Central and History, and a simple standard-def receiver box, all for $14.99 a month. I’d be almost completely cut off from my Lakers and Trojans, with no ESPN, TNT or regional network access. (Although a subscription to a service like NBA League Pass could alleviate some of that loss). I’d miss AMC, too, but I could “catch up” on all their series with Netflix.

What I would be able to do is watch streams from networks like Fox without having to wait eight days. I could also subscribe to HBO Go or Showtime Anytime, since I have the necessary pay TV papers for that, too. And if I watched on tablets and notebooks, I don’t know that I’d miss the HD.

Dish International Basic: If the ability to stream premium channels is all I want (plus maybe the BBC), I can choose this crazy-minimal package for $10 a month (which gives me just 20 foreign channels without local broadcast networks). I’d get free HBO and Showtime for three months, in addition to Dish’s Blockbuster-branded streaming. That alone might offset the $240 I’m paying on the base subscription over the two-year span of the contract.

Time Warner Digital Basic: Since I don’t know that I’m ready to give up sports and the HD big-screen, this $29.99 package might be a better option for me. It’ll give me all the basic authentication I need, plus access to ESPN and TNT’s HD channels. Notably, Time Warner is the only provider in my area that will let me authenticate WatchESPN. Then again, after 12 months, the price shoots way up.

Option 3: Negotiate a better price with my current provider, DirecTV: Heavens no, I didn’t levy threats. But I did lay out a reasonable argument to a reasonable woman. If I have to keep paying $84 a month for 200 channels, an HD DVR and a thin-client-enabled second TV room, I’m going to walk in September, when my contract runs out. I’ll be taking my check-writing talents to Dish … or AT&T … or Time Warner, or whoever can process and American Express. Turns out that in the cord-cutting era, these sales reps — or at least, the one I talked to — are flexibly empowered to trim prices mid-contract with various discounts and promotions. I got my monthly bill reduced by $20.

It’s a good deal for me because I use regional sports networks like Fox Sports West and Prime Ticket on a somewhat regular basis, and I can justify the added subscription cost by imagining what I’d spend to attend local home games, or to buy friends beer in order to see games at their place.

I can tack on Netflix and HBO subscriptions, and still keep my video budget under $100. I still have a DVR, so I reduce my exposure to unwanted advertising. But I’m kicking into the pot for re-transmission fees, so I’m not putting Disney, Viacom, Time Warner Inc, et. al. out of business.

Everybody — or most everybody — wins.

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (AP) - HBO’s new documentary on President George H.W. Bush is having its premiere on the Maine coast, which plays a prominent role in the life of the nation’s 41st president.

The premiere of “41″ was set for Tuesday evening on Bush’s 88th birthday on the grounds of St. Ann’s Church in Kennebunkport, near the Bush family’s summer home.

Bush has spent at least part of every summer since childhood in Kennebunkport, except when he served as a naval aviator during World War II.

Filmmaker Jeffrey Roth featured the rocky coast prominently in the documentary, which airs on HBO on Thursday. Bush was a fan of Roth’s previous film about astronauts, “The Wonder of It All.” The film was produced by Hollywood film executive Jerry Weintraub, a Bush family friend.

What happens in Vegas … is scrutinized in every sorry, sordid detail all over the globe. Me and a co

What happens in Vegas … is scrutinized in every sorry, sordid detail all over the globe.

Me and a couple of buddies paid $55.95 for HBO’s pay-per-view fight Saturday night. What we witnessed – like the rest of you with a clear conscience and decent vision – was Manny Pacquiao dominating Timothy Bradley. Pacquiao won almost all of the 12 rounds, nine at the very least. He buckled Bradley early on with powerful lefts. While Bradley flailed valiantly, the majority of his punches merely glanced off Pacquiao’s well-positioned arms.

It was a blowout. A complete victory. A unanimous decision.

When Bradley’s hand was raised as the winner at the MGM, boxing officially flat-lined. If you take boxing seriously ever again, shame on you. It has less credibility these days than WWE.

Despite sitting ringside for Pacquiao’s ass-whipping, two judges – Duane Ford and C.J. Ross – scored the fight for Bradley.

Said legendary boxing promoter Bob Arum, “I’ve never been as ashamed of the sport of boxing as I am tonight. … Something like this is so outlandish, it’s a death knell for the sport. This is fucking nuts. … Nobody who knows anything about boxing could have Bradley ahead in the fight.”

The Associated Press scored an easy win for Pacquiao. Same for HBO. Same for ESPN. And Compubox’s fight stats showed Pacquiao landing 94 more punches, including more in all but two of the rounds.

So how the hell did 74-year-old boxing judge Ford form this opinion?

“I thought Bradley gave Pacquiao a boxing lesson” he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

There are only two explanations: Incompetence. Or Corruption.

A lot of illegal things are accepted – even encouraged – in Vegas. Including, apparently, robbery.

With Pacquiao a solid betting favorite of almost 4.5-1 Saturday afternoon, suddenly big, late money began showing up at Vegas sportsbooks. So much so that by the time the fight started the odds were down to 3.9-1. A betting site in Ireland today claimed the fight “dirty” and awarded refunds to all bettors who wagered on Pacquiao. This result will do nothing to stop the notion that boxing is indeed “fixed,” with judges on the take.

Not even Bradley, who showed up for his post-fight press conference in a wheelchair, sounded convinced of his new welterweight belt.

“It was a good fight,” he told reporters. “Every round was pretty close. Pacquiao won the early rounds, I won the later rounds with my jab. I have to go home and see the tape to see who won.”

Sports is littered with horrible decisions:

Barry Switzer ran “Load Left” on consecutive plays in Philly. “No, Danny No!” White audibled out of a Tom Landry play call against the Redskins. Leon Lett showboated prematurely, and later attempted to cover a blocked field goal. Robin Ventura charged Nolan Ryan. Mark Cuban let Steve Nash leave. The Mets’ Johan Santana was recently credited with a no-hitter despite giving up a double. And, once upon a time, the City of Seattle sold the Sonics to Oklahoma City.

Boxing has long been absurd. From Fan Man to Tyson biting Holyfield’s ear to Floyd Mayweather challenging HBO’s Larry Merchant, it’s more ridiculous soap opera than legit sport. And, in the wake of last weekend’s travesty, the Nevada State Athletic Commission says there will be no reviews of the fight or discipline of the judges who rendered the preposterous decision.

So congrats, boxing. Your newest champion is a guy who was outpunched, who never bothered his opponent and who is sheepish about his own victory.

While boxing’s integrity has finally tapped out, there is one man smiling at the mess: Dana White, UFC President.

NEW YORK (AP) - Tourism officials in Maine will be delighted when they see HBO’s new documenta

NEW YORK (AP) - Tourism officials in Maine will be delighted when they see HBO’s new documentary on President George H.W. Bush.

The leisurely paced film has so many pictures of waves splashing over the rocks at the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport that it’s tempting to book a vacation nearby. The beauty of Walker Point and its rejuvenating qualities for Bush since he was a boy is key to understanding him, and key to filmmaker Jeffrey Roth’s goals as a result.

“It sort of became like another character because of his love for the place and his family, and his love for his boat,” Roth said.

Granted unusual access to the former president, Roth set out to make “41″ (the title a reference to Bush as the nation’s 41st president; his son was 43) a personal rather than political film. It debuts Thursday, two days after Bush’s 88th birthday.

Roth doesn’t pretend that Bush’s four years as president (1989 to 1993) weren’t the most important. But he finds rich stories in the other 84. Remarkably, the film contains footage of Bush’s rescue when his plane was shot down in World War II. Bush also talks about his daughter, Robin, who died of leukemia at age 3 in 1953. Both were more formative life events than any political act.

Bush says in the film that the presidency “was the epitome of my life but not my whole life.”

Before becoming president, he was an oil executive, congressman, head of the Republican National Committee, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, head of the Central Intelligence Agency, liaison to China and vice president to Ronald Reagan.

Roth gets an insightful moment when he asks Bush about when the Berlin Wall came down during his presidency. Bush responds by mentioning critics who said he should have gone to the Wall to celebrate with demonstrators, and explains how the Russians might have considered that unnecessarily provocative. The savvy diplomat’s reaction showed he didn’t have an all-consuming need for attention.

He was well aware of criticism, though. Bush shares with many Republicans an aversion to the press, saying in the film that most reporters were against him when he lost his re-election bid to Bill Clinton.

So it was mildly surprising that he talked at all for “41.” Bush doesn’t grant many interviews and doesn’t want to talk about politics, said film executive Jerry Weintraub, a family friend who helped shepherd “41″ and is doing many of the interviews to support it.

“He’s not a braggadocio kind of guy,” Weintraub said. “He doesn’t want to sit around and talk about how wonderful he is. He never did. That’s one of the things that made him so wonderful.”

Bush was a fan of Roth’s previous film about astronauts, “The Wonder of It All,” and hosted viewing parties in both his presidential library in Texas and in Kennebunkport. That enabled him to grow comfortable with Roth, the former president said in an email interview.

“I could tell he was a decent guy, in addition to being a very talented filmmaker,” Bush said.

Roth proposed, to the former president’s chief of staff, doing a film about Bush’s life. She warned him it probably wouldn’t happen. Bush hasn’t written a memoir and isn’t now. He put out a book of letters, cooperated with his daughter Dorothy’s book in 2006 and is cooperating on a biography that Jon Meacham is writing, but that’s it.

Somewhat to Roth’s surprise, Bush said yes.

Bush said he never would have sat for the filmmaker’s interviews while his son was in office, because “the last thing I wanted to do during those eight years was complicate the life of the president.” Silence on that issue essentially continued. Bush talked about his pride in his son’s achievement but nothing about his presidency.

“There really wasn’t any conscious decision about timing,” he said. “But it’s a good thing we did it when we did because I’m tired of talking about myself now.”

That attitude — Bush even talked about violating “my dear mother’s rule about not talking about yourself” — shaped the film. Roth hoped for more interview time, but had to make do with what he had. Yet he recognized it was a special opportunity to make a film in Bush’s own voice. He even interviewed former President Clinton about his predecessor but decided not to use anybody else talking about Bush.

“He just wants to be a man who’s enjoying the rest of his life,” Roth said. “He doesn’t really care too much about how history remembers him and that tends to reflect how he’s not out there all that much.”

Once Bush agreed to participate, he encouraged Weintraub’s participation because “he didn’t want to do it and have it put in a drawer,” Weintraub said.

“Jerry was instrumental in what the showbiz types call the ‘post’ or ‘post-production’ phase — either convincing or blackmailing the good people at HBO into taking on the project,” Bush said.

Bush comes across as a gentleman in the film, an old school politician who believes in service and in getting things done as opposed to getting into mortal combat. One of the most fascinating passages, however, came when Roth asked him about his 1992 election opponent Ross Perot.

“Can’t talk about him,” Bush said, his voice suddenly frosty. “Cost me the election and I don’t like him. Other than that, I have nothing to say.”

Roth began filming in 2009, with his final shots coming when President Obama awarded Bush the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. You can see the progression of age. Bush is seen walking around Walkers Point early, then he needs a cane and, finally, he is seen in a wheelchair as Parkinson’s Disease weakens his legs.

Movingly, “41″ ends in Kennebunkport.

“This is our anchor to the windward,” the former president says. “This is where our memories are. This is where I’ve been coming all my life and will remain to our last days.”

You’re never really dead on HBO’s TRUE BLOOD.

And as Season No. 5 of the Sookie Stackhouse saga kicked off, we also find out that vampire love can be oddly fickle.

Here’s a quick recap of the premiere (Spoiler Alert – if you haven’t watched the episode and don’t want to know — stop reading!):

Is Tara dead?
Technically yes. When we last saw her, she was lying on the floor of Sookie’s kitchen with her head blown off. Tara took a bullet fired by Debbie Pelt, who was after Sookie. And yes — Sookie offs Debbie. But in her grief, Sookie strikes a deal with vampire Pam to turn Tara. So what kind of vamp will Tara be? Is there any doubt she won’t be nasty? (Some great scenes with Pam. Ironic that she is Tara’s maker because the two hated each other.) And did anyone catch why Pam was at Sookie’s place and what she said? Did she turn Eric into the Authority?

Best line from the episode?
“I finally have the strength to say, I’m a gay vampire American,” says The Rev. Steve Newlin, who professes his love to a naked Jason. Ummmm — is Newlin telling the truth? Dunno. But he gets nasty when Jason does not return his affections, and it’s the lovely Jessica who saves Jason by telling Newlin he’s hers and to back off. (By the by — Jessica has become quite the littler party girl. And Hoyt is still mad at Jason for stealing his girl. I was surprised that Jason didn’t tell Hoyt to take a flying leap because Hoyt had dumped Jessica.)

How is the bromance going?
It’s a little odd to see Eric and Bill working together — but what a team. And while Sookie/Eric and Sookie/Bill fans might be sad that it seems like the guys have given up on her so fast, I wouldn’t worry. We know they are all fated to reunite again. We just don’t know how HBO will handle that! What’s really weird? Watching Eric reunite with his sister Nora — a high-ranking member of the Authority. Eric and Nora share the same maker in Godric, so I guess they aren’t siblings in the true since. Otherwise, their relationship is wayyy incestuous.

What happened to Jesus’ body?
We don’t know! Lafayette — who had been possessed by Marnie — killed Jesus and the body was left in Lafayette’s living room. But when a grieving Lafayette returns with Sookie to take care of the body — it’s gone! Poor Lafayette. He killed his lover. His cousin has been turned into a vampire. And he has to help Sookie clean up the body parts from Debbie Pelt’s murder. All in one night. Blech.

Are things heating up between Alcide and Sookie?
Not right now. Alcide offers Sookie his protection (see below) and she has to refuse because she offed his girlfriend Debbie Pelt. She almost blurts it out but Lafayette stops her just in time. Sookie tells Lafayette that she didn’t kill Debbie in self defense. She wanted to kill her — and that makes it all the yuckier for her.

Why is the wolfpack after Sam?
Because they think he killed Marcus. But Sam wants to protect Alcide — who really did kill the evil werewolf — and Luna and her daughter so he confesses to the murder. But Luna finds Alcide, who shows up just as Sam is showing the pack where the body is. And then it gets gross. The pack — including Marcus’ mom — decides to eat Marcus’ body. Ick. Technically, Alcide is now the pack leader. But does he want to lead? And will the group let him?

What’s up with the humans in Bon Temps?
Plenty. Andy and Holly hook up but her sons walk in on them as they sleep naked in bed. And Terry’s old Marine friend — Patrick — is in town. He wants to find out why a series of fires have killed members from the platoon he and Terry served in. But Terry doesn’t want to hear anything about the fires or deaths.

Who dug up Russell Edgington?
Dunno. But someone is taking care of the vamp and Alcide — who helped Bill and Eric bury the sucker — knows he’s back. He warns Sookie and later Eric. We do learn that there are two factions within the Authority: One that wants to exist peacefully with humans and one that does not. So maybe the faction that wants all humans to die is helping Russell get back in the hunt?

What was your favorite scene?

The awesome HBO Go service has landed on Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet, but like Jon Snow at The Wall, all other Android tablet owners are still out in the cold.

HBO Go’s service gives HBO subscribers access to the premium TV channel’s catalog of original programming, including newer shows like “Game of Thrones” and “True Blood,” as well as classics such as “The Wire” and “Deadwood.” The service has thus far been available on the iPad, iPhone, some Android phones, Xbox 360, and other devices. But it has not been on Android tablets until today, perhaps because the Kindle Fire is easily the most popular Android-based tablet in the U.S. so there is more incentive to develop for it.

Notably, HBO Go has attracted scrutiny this week because some folks were upset HBO won’t offer it as a stand-alone service. At this point, you have to pay for HBO through your cable provider to get access to the service. HBO is not ruling out the possibility of changing its business model, but for now it will continue to be quite pricey to get access.

Last night I gave myself the mammoth task of re-watching the entire second season of Game of Thrones

Last night I gave myself the mammoth task of re-watching the entire second season of Game of Thrones in preparation for the season finale later that night. I completed this task, happily, and then eagerly sat down for the endgame, and I was certainly not disappointed. Whether or not this season was better than the first is up for debate, and I haven’t really even straightened that out in my head yet. All I can say for sure is that it was different, in the same way that ice cream and pizza are different, even though I love them both. Season 1 was all about discovery, discovery of this new world for viewers, discovery of all the ridiculous intrigue that goes on behind the scenes in medieval politics, discovery of what might be out there going bump in the night. Season 2 has few closed doors, but is no less exciting because you’re finally allowed to see what goes on behind them. There are entire episodes in Season 2 where we just watch people talk to one another, and it’s entertaining because the conversations carry weight and are interesting; something many television shows fail to deliver.

I felt as though Season 2 also took more liberties with the source material than S1. The books aren’t completely fresh in my mind, but I did re-read Game of Thrones and Clash of Kings during last year’s season run. Some of the things in Season 2 surprised me, and not always in good ways. Thankfully, there were certainly plausible reasons for these changes, most of them, and I could at least reason why such changes occurred.

One of the oddest changes was something they’d initiated last year by bringing the prostitute from Winterfell to King’s Landing, presumably to show life through the eyes of a paid woman. Transitioning that into Season 2 they seem to have combined her character with that of Chataya, the head of a brothel in Clash of Kings whom Tyrion befriends and who hides Shae for him. Tyrion and this amalgamation prostitute do have some type of relationship in the show, but it’s not as complicated as in the book, even if the result of her being found by Cersei and mistaken for Shae is still present.

Another big change from the books was the theft of Daenarys’ dragons by the warlocks of Qarth. This never happened in the books. Instead she willingly went to the House of the Undying in order to gain knowledge, and frankly her journey through the House in the books was vastly more important and interesting than in the show.. In the show she is given some visions, but nothing prophetic. The journey she takes in the book throws her all in and out of history, and she sees things few people are privvy to. I think adding some prophecy into a television show might have confused people, and so I can understand its exclusion. I also understand why they would have her dragons be stolen in that it gives her the motivation to go to the House of the Undying, a place that it really didn’t make much sense for her to go in the books given the danger involved.

The most game-changing alteration came last night in the last ten minutes of the show. Spoiler alert. The white walkers march on the Castle Black camp, led by a fearsome looking ice man that, as far as I can remember, has no places in the books at all. I haven’t read the latest novel, nor do I even remember most of the events in the prior novels past Clash of Kings, but no where do I remember seeing armies of white walkers and certainly not a white walker general. The Others, as they are called in the books, were always this source of mystery, an eventual menace to be feared and prepared for, particularly by the Night’s Watch. I always envisioned a final showdown between Daenarys with her full grown dragons and the white walkers, but if the show is going to somehow accelerate that eventuality, then I’m not sure how exactly they’re altering events, or if it will work. It could be that this was just a glimpse. Maybe they’ll attack something and then we won’t hear about them again for several years. But the way in which they framed it as the very last thing we see for Season 2 makes it seem like they are the cliffhanger, the present threat that is to harangue the cast in Season 3.

This new view of the white walkers also brings up something interesting that I only just realized, mainly that what we’ve seen of them so far hasn’t been really what they are. Meaning, the things that attacked Commander Mormont and even the rangers in the woods during that first episode weren’t true white walkers, but rather reanimated dead. The real white walkers probably look more like the general in those last few moments of the finale, though he seemed to me to be an aged version of one, lots of wisdom lines, etc.

Despite the changes, the season was great, and I felt as though some of the actors really came into their own. Peter Dinklage was great, again, and has some of the best dialogue in the entire show (and delivered beautifully). Emilie Clarke continues to impress me with her on-screen presence and her ability to make me believe that she is the mother of dragons. Maisie Williams as well continues to amaze me as only child actors can. And possibly the one I most appreciated watching this season was Lena Headey, who manages to make me hate her, but never dislike her. My biggest acting complaints were the changes that the show inexplicably made. The actors playing Richard Karstark and The Mountain were changed, and I didn’t find either of their replacements nearly as engaging as the originals. The appropriately named Conan Stevens made a much more impressive Clegane in the first season.

But, whatever. The strength of this show allows them to make changes and not completely piss of their fans. I also applaud the decision to stretch book 3 into 2 seasons, both because it means the series will run for longer, and because it leaves less need to chop plot points. I hope we see some great new characters/actors and continued fantastic performances from the current leads. I plan on sleeping until next April, so I’ll see you all then.

Hollywood writer Aaron Sorkin says Steve Jobs was a complicated guy, but knows that he will write the late Apple co-founder as if he was “making [his] case to god for why [he] should be let into heaven.”

Sorkin, who is known for having characters walk with purpose while simultaneously engaged in witty repartee, sat down at the D10 conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. to chat about his upcoming movie about Steve Jobs.

“I’m at the earliest possible stage with Steve Jobs,” said Sorkin at the conference. “It’s a process of procrastination where you try to figure out what the movie is going to be about … I’m going to identify the point of fiction that appeals to me and dramatize that.”

Sorkin, who just wrapped up a fictional show that takes place behind-the-scenes in the news industry, is adapting Walter Isaacson’s biography of Jobs, which was hugely popular after Jobs’ passing from cancer in October 2011. There will be obvious challenges turning the biography into a movie, and Sorkin admits he had reservations taking the project on. He explained that it “was a little like writing about the Beatles. There are so many people out there who now so much about him … I just saw a minefield of disappointment.”

Sorkin has taken an interest in the drama that often unfolds in Silicon Valley, and adapted it to the big screen. He first did this with The Social Network, a movie based on the life of Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg. The drama in that flick surrounded the ownership of Facebook, a debate that has led to many lawsuits between Mark Zuckerberg and others who claim they helped him create the now public company. Sorkin wound up winning an Oscar for writing the screenplay.

“I had one experience writing about the anti-hero and that was The Social Network,” he said. “[Jobs is] an extremely complicated guy. Mark Zuckerberg is an extremely complicated guy as well … I can’t judge the character. He has to, for me, be a hero.”

The actor that will eventually play Jobs has to be a smart person. Sorkin explained that there are a number of things you can fake as an actor, but intelligence isn’t one of them. In classic Sorkin style, the actor will also have to be a fast talker. But even if his movie is a flop, he believes people are naturally interested in the man who made Apple what it is today.

“I think that what has captured the public’s attention about Steve Jobs … is that he made things. I think nowadays we’re being told a lot that as Americans, our future is somehow in service. That the days of making cars and railroads and big buildings … that those days are over. Steve Jobs said no, they’re not. We still make things that people want. And we do that in Hollywood too.”

HBO SPORTS®, NFL FILMS AND THE MIAMI DOLPHINS JOIN FORCES FOR A NEW SEASON OF THE ULTIMATE SPORTS REALITY SERIES WHEN HARD KNOCKS: TRAINING CAMP WITH THE MIAMI DOLPHINS, CHRONICLING THE RIGORS AND DAILY DEMANDS OF NFL TRAINING CAMP, DEBUTS TUESDAY, AUG. 7, EXCLUSIVELY ON HBO

HBO Sports, NFL Films and the Miami Dolphins team up for an all-access look at what it takes to make it in the National Football League when HARD KNOCKS: TRAINING CAMP WITH THE MIAMI DOLPHINS debuts in August. The first sports-based reality series – and one of the fastest-turnaround reality series – kicks off its five-episode seventh season, presented in HD, TUESDAY, AUG. 7 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO. Other hour-long episodes debut subsequent Tuesdays at the same time, with an encore play every Wednesday in August at 11:00 p.m., culminating in the Sept. 4 season finale.

“We are delighted that HARD KNOCKS will be returning this summer and placing the spotlight on the Miami Dolphins, a venerable franchise that had an exciting off-season activity,” says Ken Hershman, president, HBO Sports. “This marks the first time that the series has featured a first-year head coach (Joe Philbin) and we are extremely grateful to both Coach Philbin and the entire organization for agreeing to participate. As always, there will be plenty on the line for veterans, free agents and rookies.”

“On the 40th anniversary of the greatest season in NFL history–Don Shula’s perfect ’72 Dolphins– it is perfectly fitting that Hard Knocks is heading to Miami to capture the start of a new era for one of the league’s proudest teams,” says NFL Films president Steve Sabol. “After Hard Knocks’ hiatus last summer, I know our team at NFL Films can’t wait to get back on the field.”

The cinema verité series will focus on the daily lives and routines of players and coaches as the intriguing Miami Dolphins, who compete in the ultra-competitive AFC East, prepare for the 2012 NFL season. HARD KNOCKS: TRAINING CAMP WITH THE MIAMI DOLPHINS will chronicle first year head coach Joe Philbin and an intriguing mix of high-profile veterans, free agents and rookie hopefuls throughout training camp and the preseason. Each week, players will experience drills, meetings and fun, while struggling to prove they have what it takes to make the team and make their mark in the NFL.

“We are excited that the premier company in sports filmmaking history, NFL FILMS, and HBO Sports have chosen the Miami Dolphins to appear on their award-winning series Hard Knocks,” said Joe Philbin, head coach of the Miami Dolphins. “We are looking forward to connecting with our many fans across the country as the program chronicles our 2012 training camp. The series will highlight the outstanding men who comprise our team and represent our organization admirably, both on and off the field, as they compete for a coveted position on our roster.

“The Miami Dolphins have long been synonymous with success on the filed as evidenced by our five Super Bowl appearances and the only perfect season in NFL history,” added Philbin. “That heritage serves as a constant reminder to our players and staff of the great legacy that has been left for us to uphold. Our team embraces that rich past and looks confidently to the future as we begin this journey back to the top of the NFL.

“All the decisions that have been made this off-season have had one guiding principle — will it help our players and organization reach its full potential? This one is no different. We are convinced that our affiliation with NFL FILMS and HBO will allow football fans everywhere an opportunity to comprehend the significant sacrifices and demands that our players endure each day along their journey in training camp as a Miami Dolphin. We eagerly await the opening of training camp on July 26 and the 2012 NFL regular season that lies ahead of us.”

A 24-person NFL Films crew will live at the Dolphins’ training camp in South Florida, shooting more than 1,000 hours of video over the course of the series. Camera and sound crews will be given unencumbered access to the players’ and coaches’ meeting rooms, training rooms, dormitories and practice fields.

This summer’s edition of Hard Knocks marks the first time the series will premiere on Tuesday nights in prime time; previously the series debuted on Wednesdays.

HARD KNOCKS launched with the Baltimore Ravens in 2001, followed by the Dallas Cowboys in 2002. The series resumed in 2007 with the Kansas City Chiefs, winning a Sports Emmy®. In 2008, the series returned to the Dallas Cowboys, receiving a second Sports Emmy® for production excellence. In 2009 HARD KNOCKS spotlighted the Cincinnati Bengals franchise and the show captured two more Sports Emmy® Awards for “Outstanding Edited Series/Anthology” and “Outstanding post-produced Sound/Audio.” The most recent season of HARD KNOCKS in 2010 featured the New York Jets and the series captured three Sports Emmys®, including the trophy for “Outstanding Edited Series/Anthology.”

Rolling Stone noted that Hard Knocks is, “A smash hit series” while Time Magazine called the program, “riveting.”

The New York Post wrote, “Hard Knocks is a hell of a show and it becomes must-see TV for football fans.”

Sports Illustrated.com said Hard Knocks is the “most entertaining reality show on TV.”

The New York Times concluded, “It is a rare glimpse into the psyche of a team,” while The Wall St. Journal notes the show is “captivating television.”

HBO aired this new TRUE BLOOD series 5 trailer just before GAME OF THRONES last night (May 27) and it’s clear that Russell Edgington is back!

The video shows a lot, including one scene where Sookie quips, “A 3,000-year old vampire wants to suck my blood. Must be Thursday!” We hear Pam asking “How could you think I would dig up Russell Edgington.” Eric saying “I trust no one.” And in another, Bill says “There’s a leak somewhere.”

Other tidbits: Eric gets a visit from the Vampire Authority, the werewolf pack comes after Sam and we meet Roman, played by Christopher Meloni.

This will be Alan Ball’s last season on True Blood, and Sookie watchers wonder how Anna Paquin’s true life pregnancy will play into — or not — in this season. What do you think, will we have a pregnant Sookie at the end of this season?

Season No. 5 of TRUE BLOOD airs on June 10.

When you think of Game of Thrones, you might think of the HBO series, now in its second season. You

When you think of Game of Thrones, you might think of the HBO series, now in its second season. You might think of the fantasy novels by George RR Martin. You might even think of the big triple-A console/PC RPG game published by Atlus. Of course, you’ll probably also think about violent death, political intrigue, and naked people.

When Jon Radoff thinks Game of Thrones, he thinks social game. Wait, what?

Disruptor Beam is Radoff’s latest gaming company, and he’s producing Game Of Thrones: Ascent. Disruptor Beam has the exclusive rights to the property for social games. Radoff was insistent that this wouldn’t be your standard social game, however, even though it’s meant for a web browser.

“It won’t be Xbox in a browser window,” he said, due to technical considerations of the web platform itself. However, Game of Thrones: Ascent will stay true to the storyline and themes that make the novels and the television production stand apart: complex character interactions, political intrigue, and choices that truly matter. Sounds a lot like the Bioware way, and Radoff (pictured, right) is the first to admit that the developer of Dragon Age and Mass Effect is his inspiration for the type of interaction he wants in Game of Thrones: Ascent.

Jon Radoff founded GamerDNA, a competitor of Raptr, in 2006 and later sold the game-data service in 2009. His experience there led to his current interest in when, how often, and with whom gamers play games. He realized that he wanted to combine his personal love of games with this data-driven look at community engagement, saying, “We want to take the idea of the social graph and asynchronous play to craft new types of gameplay.”

Radoff mentioned that in addition, he was noticing that acquiring customers via avenues like Facebook advertising was becoming increasingly expensive. He wanted to find an authentic way to bring games to established fan-communities, like Game of Thrones, “without becoming a Zynga.” His goal was to become the Bioware of the social market, tapping into big communities with games that are good enough for the type of rabid fan base those communities engender, where the fans pass along anything of quality via word of mouth, not advertising.

Game of Thrones: Ascent, then, is Radoff’s first push into a game of this quality that connects the social game market with a large, some might say rabid, fan base. Disruptor Beam spent time with George RR Martin convincing him that the game they wanted to make wasn’t a quick tie-in and would honor the universe and stories he has created. They also worked with HBO; Radoff said that the look and sounds of the game were mainly inspired by the HBO production. Said Radoff, “I was a fan of the books before I ever started Disruptor Beam. I wanted to make this game true to his vision, and something that fans like me will enjoy.”

The area of innovation that Disruptor Beam is focusing on is in the nature of the interactions of the players themselves, giving them something new to do, allowing them to make real moral and plot decisions that affect the gameplay. “People haven’t seen this in a social game, yet,” said Radoff. “It comes down to good storytelling and character interaction.”

So just how do you make a social game authentic? Look at movie-tie in games for examples.

Without naming names, Radoff said, “In general, there’s a big distinction between a typical film launch and books and TV shows. For the most part, films are a spectacle that happens at a point in time. These are not the type of IP that Disruptor Beam wants to work with. Our business model is to create very community centered games that will genuinely involve fans. We’re a lot more selective in the properties we choose.”

He continued, saying, “We’re not in business to promote films or TV. We want to create games.”

Radoff was tight-lipped about the mechanics or content of the game itself. When pressed, all he would say was that Game of Thrones: Ascent would include things that fans will immediately relate to: backstabbing, entering alliances, and building on the complexity of these multi-layered character relationships. “It’s actually more of an anti-Social game,” he quipped.

The story of Ascent will take place in the same timeline as the first book of the series of novels, which is the first two seasons of the HBO hit show. Large story events from the novels and program will happen during the events surrounding the characters in the social game. You won’t play as major characters, of course, but you will meet them along the way, Radoff said. The plan from here is to continue to add new content as the books and TV show continue, as well.

When will this obviously highly anticipated social game release? Radoff was similarly cagey, saying only that the date will be “when we’re happy with it. it’ll be ready when it’s ready.” He did remind us, though, that social games take a lot less time to create and produce than a typical console game. Sometime this year, then? Radoff declined to speculate.

Jon Radoff is a serial entrepreneur, author, and the former Founder/CEO of GamerDNA.com. His full biography is here.

Disruptor Beam is a Boston-based game development company funded by a group of successful Boston-area gaming and technology entrepreneurs including the founders of Harmonix, E-Ink and Common Angels. They declined to share any investment numbers with VentureBeat at this time.

¿Capturaran a Theon?
