What started as a day of learning and challenges ends on a happy social note. It is Saturday and after a long day online I had to write this story so hang with me.

Many of us are under pressure to find and/or keep our jobs these days so it can become all about us. This is a story about helping others, about giving back, about mentoring the next generation of leaders.

In my professional life I have met many amazing people. Some you think you will only work with and never see or speak to again. This does not have to be true if you care and want to give back.

My story starts with my first trip to India in 2003. I was traveling there on behalf of my company at the time (Elsevier.com). We (Rick Komyanek and I) were going there to evaluate several vendors and would be meeting up with several co-workers the next evening. We arrived on Saturday night to get settled in after coming from the states. We actually arrived about 1:00am on Saturday night (Sunday morning) and were scheduled to be picked up at 7:00am for a day trip to the Taj Mahal. After getting a few hours of sleep we went down to the front desk to meet our “escorts” for the day. It was there I ran into Rajat Pandit (rajatpandit.com) from HCL (HCL.in). Honestly, I did not think twice about Rajat at the time. He did a wonderful job getting us to the Taj and back so we had a great day. He helped us get from New Delhi to Agra and back which is quite a long day. Rick and I told him our observations as we navigated the roads between the two cities. We all laughed about the cultural “differences” between what we were used to and what is normal in India. I honestly thought that was the last time I would see or hear from Rajat.

As we progressed with our negotiations with HCL and eventually started to build up their team and transfer work to them, Rajat was assigned to our account in London. I was pleased to see a familiar face and glad that he quickly became part of the overall team in London. Through my periodic site visits I always tried to see Rajat because of the energy and enthusiasm he brought to work each day. This relationship lasted for several years until both he and I decided to part with our respective companies and seek greener pastures. Although we parted on good terms, the distance between us seemed like a huge obstacle (he being in London while I was based in the States).

Enter the advent of Social Media sites such as Facebook (www.facebook.com) and Twitter (www.twitter.com). As I jumped into these new sites, I started to build out my circle of friends and followers working my way through contacts I made over the years. I was lucky to find Rajat out on Facebook and started to chat with him here and there. This went on for a few years and was a nice way to “chat” but nothing really became of it (from my perspective). Rajat moved onto Yahoo and a couple of other leading technology companies and continued to hone his technical skills. Here is where the story gets interesting (or at least to the point of he post). As I stated above, Rajat is a very sharp programmer / architect. As such, he was helping this former engineer (moi) overcome some learning hurdles with some of the newer internet technologies. Always willing and helpful, he would walk me through this and that with a smile on his face (and in his voice). I was happy for the help and he seemed more than eager to offer it. All was good.

Today, Rajat asked me for some career advice. I was honored for him to ask me because you never know where someone is that appreciates your experience and consul. We share a similar background albeit separated by a few years (his just a few years my junior). We both come from the technical ranks and eventually face decisions as to where to go in your future career progressions. Rajat asked how I made the transition from a Systems Engineer to being a leader in IT an organization. As I stated above, I was honored to offer him my advice on what it takes to be a leader, both in general and in an IT organization. In addition I was happy to relay the specifics on how I moved from being seen as a programmer to being thought of as a leader.

Leadership is about a vision, it’s about a story of where you’ve been, where you are and where you should be going. It’s about selling the vision of the future, a better place for all the right reasons. Leadership is about confidence, an understanding of the business/technical issues and how your vision will bridge them to the other side. It’s about leading from the front, rolling up your sleeves and showing/doing what it takes to implement tactical and strategic change. It’s about taking calculated risks and delivering the rewards from them. It’s about inspiring others to stretch to the next level, to grow, to be challenged, to be scared and to overcome.

I’m glad I had the time today to start on this journey. I did not expect to end up here however am very glad I did. I took the time and hope it pays off in spades for Rajat (blog.rajatpandit.com). Have a great journey my friend.

Author: Shefali Roy Source: ezinearticles.com The world today is a customer oriented place for busin

Author: Shefali Roy
Source: ezinearticles.com

The world today is a customer oriented place for businesses. The success or downfall of any business in the world depends today on how its customers perceive it.

Hence, taking an approach which considers the requirements of the customers before manufacturing the products is quite an advisable one. All those companies which have followed this approach have done well and all those who have chosen not to change with the changing time have gradually faded away from the global conception. This can be seen when one considers the Indian business scenario with the change being the advent of online shopping in India.

HCL is a company which believes in change and, therefore, continues to evolve even today. Hence, it has incorporated the online platform into the total lots of mediums that are used for selling its products. Online shopping in India, therefore, is now witness to websites that are thriving and flourishing by selling HCL laptops.

This company in the product segment, cheap key chain
, of laptops has created quite a name for itself by making products which cater both to the general needs and the specific needs of customers. It does this by creating cheap laptops apart from making expensive laptops as well. Hence, its customer base (on the global front) is quite a big one and continues to increase with every single day.

In, cheap key chain
, order to understand the worth of a laptop,, cheap key chain
, it is necessary to consider its worthiness from the viewpoint of the features that are present. The following chain of paragraphs puts forward a couple of examples of laptops that have been made by HCL (along with a brief outline of the features).

The first example that can be taken is the HCL Leaptop Z-3919. This device has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor which is the T6400. The operating system that is present in this laptop is the Windows Vista Home Premium. The hard drive of this device is also a good one in terms of its storage ability and it is the SATA hard drive which has a storage capacity of 500 GB.

The, cheap key chain
, next example that can be taken would be that of the HCL Leaptop U-3918 and this example is certainly a formidable one when one takes, cheap key chain
, a look at the features that are present in this particular laptop.

This device is vested with a touch pad, cheap key chain
, and a 87 keys keyboard. Apart from this feature, the total, cheap key chain
, storage, cheap key chain
, capacity of the SATA hard drive present in this device is 500 GB. The processor that is present in this laptop is the Intel Core 2 Duo processor. There are three USB ports present in this laptop. The display screen, cheap key chain
, of this laptop is a 14 inches WXGA TFT wide screen which has its display abilities enhanced with the presence of the View Perfect Technology.

HCL laptops, apart from having a fantastic perception among customers, are also favourites for stores and shops in the Indian subcontinent. The reason lies in the exceptionally high demand for these laptops. Online shopping in the Indian sub continent is witnessing an, cheap key chain
, impressive number of laptops getting sold.

The future, therefore, for HCL laptops is, therefore,, cheap key chain
, one which holds many pleasant outcomes. The probability for this to happen in quite a high when one considers the ongoing R&D in HCL workshops all over the world.

Dear Kovair Friends,

I’m posting this blog from the Kovair Kolkata office where I am spending the week with our Product Development group. The content of this blog, however, focuses on my visit to Bangalore last week where Kovair participated in the SPM-ICON event from October 29-30, focusing on IT Project Management. Kovair participated as the Gold sponsor of the event along with Microsoft as the Platinum sponsor and IBM as the Event sponsor. As you can see by the names, we were in very good company and received great reception and recognition! This was the 5th annual event and we participated for the first time. This was also our first major marketing event in India where we started focusing on since Spring 2009.

Kovair CEO and Chairman Bipin Shah (myself, right) gives one of three cash prizes to an ecstatic winner.

The first day of the event primarily comprised of tutorial sessions where we networked and conducted a quiz on ALM and ITSM and gave out cash prizes to three winners. On Day 2, we had some very interesting sessions with a keynote address by Bob Hoekstra, former CEO of Phillips and a well-known face in Bangalore based on his past there. The day’s sessions were managed by individuals from some major IT companies in Bangalore such as Program and Project Management from Wipro, Challenges of Managing Projects to Improve Efficiency by HCL, Managing Software Product Portfolio with Real Insights & Real Metrics by IBM Rational and Managing Changes by Infosys. Kovair was provided with a vendor speaking slot where we presented the “Kovair Value Proposition for IT Projects and Service Management.”

Colonel Ravindranath shares his experience at the conference.

For those who wanted to hear something about project management from a non-IT perspective, there was an excellent and somewhat emotionally charged presentation by Colonel Ravindranath from the Indian army where he described the Project Management aspects of recapturing the Tololing peak by his battalion during the Kargil war between India and Pakistan a few years ago at an elevation of over 16,000 feet! The project included many details of planning, communicating, training, rehearsing and logistical planning, including the manual lifting of ammunition at night by couple of hundred soldiers and support personnel for over a week without the enemy realizing what was happening in the darkness of the night! While it was interesting from a planning and execution perspective, it was very sad to hear about the casualties of such an undertaking and realizing the tragic part of any war and how it affects the people and their families who get sacrificed in any such conflict!

Our booth drew several people and it was interesting for this writer to see the Bangalore IT crowd in action with attendees from the “who is who” of IT companies in India such as IBM (yes, you can also call it an Indian IT company with an employee count of 50,000 in India), Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, HCL, Mindtree and many others!

For further details and to view presentations and/or download the Kovair presentation, please visit http://www.qsitglobal.com/spm-icon-2009/.

On another note, I would like to mention that Kovair is in the process of signing up two VARs in the Bangalore area — Vedasoft and GenXT so that we can better serve our customers in the India market – particularly in the Bangalore area with it’s large presence of both Indian and Global IT and Technology companies.

Thanks for reading this and I hope you will visit the Kovair website at www.kovair.com for other information and updates!

Sincerely,

Bipin Shah
CEO and Chairman

These extracts from forbes magzine (pg1, pg2)are worth coming back for an organization that want to

These extracts from forbes magzine (pg1, pg2)are worth coming back for an organization that want to see turnaround..Reading this, I feel it is not only Vineet Nayyar who did the turnaround, but the trust and confidence that Shiv Nadar had put in him and gave the opportunity, inspite being poles apart in behaviour..

Few things that are worth noting
a) He put employees first before the customer
b) He put systems (automation) in place to add convenience in trivial jobs
c) He probably is getting stuck with heavy top layer and reporting structure
d) Always friendly approach and majorly deviates from imperial rule

Another that was highlighted by Nadir that HCL has been there in right business all the time, but never caught the bus of milking the cash cow.. He quoted that they had their operating system when Microsoft also just launched i.e. in 1977 !! then they had hardware capability and end to end solution capability when IBM was picking up..and now they probably first time reaping best on their Managed services business..

Whatever was going wrong time and again with HCL tech was probably rightly approached by Vineet with different thinking..sometime that’s what is needed..trust honesty and let others run !

Three commonly heard statements are worth noting:
a) Employee Firs, Customer Second
b) Destroying the CEO’s office
c) One does not need to go to the boss for every little thing.

BSNL India telecom service provider and HCL Infosystems, the IT company have teamed up to increase broadband penetration in rural India. As a part of National Broadband Penetration Program (NBPP), BSNL broadband India would give away a desk-top PC with a broadband connection to the rural users.

Rural subscribers will get this offer (broadband and PC) for Rs 399 a month, once they pay Rs 2,250 as upfront fee. The Department of Telecom (DOT) will give a subsidy of Rs 4,500 per connection to BSNL India from its Universal Services Obligation Fund. according to the report.

There are over 27,789 rural and remote BSNL telephone exchanges which will come under the scheme.

Kuldeep Goyal, CMD at BSNL said:

“This is indeed the one of the major initiatives to bridge the digital divide by offering PC + Broadband at a subsidised rates to our customers. We are delighted to partner with HCL Infosystems for this nation wide programme. The missing pie in PC and broadband proliferation was the affordability and service which are now being provided jointly by us and HCL, with support from USOF to increase desirability.”

The scheme would cost around Rs 1,500 crore the BSNL broadband users in rural areas will get free HCL service from its repair centres.

Ajai Chowdhry, chairman and CEO, HCL said:

“Today, the need to create a progressive environment of growth is more than ever before. Indian economy, in the past few years, has grown but the growth can be accelerated and made more inclusive by providing an impetus to PC and broadband penetration in rural India. This project for BSNL is in line with our strategy for mass adoption of PC + broadband to promote India’s GDP growth”

Hanuman and Obama (see below)

An art fair held in Delhi at the end of last week was, by any measure, a success. The organisers of the India Art Summit logged a total of just over 40,000 visitors and said that sales totalled Rs260m ($5.4m, £3.3m).

Sceptics have inevitably queried the figures, but the visitors’ seem genuine because they were based on a count at the entrance gates.

The sales figures are less reliable because they are based on what the galleries told the organisers, and no doubt include potential sales and a bit of optimism – negotiations are still in progress on many works around Delhi as I write. One contact has suggested the figures may also have been under-stated because of large cash payments that are likely to have been made.

But whatever the eventual sales, there was enough buying activity to indicate that the market for Indian modern art – and maybe contemporary art too – has bottomed out in the past two months and that serious collectors are now buying at prices that are often 30%-40% below the peak levels last year, and sometimes far more.

Friends tell me that serious collectors buying at the fair included Preeti Ambani of Tina Ambani’s Harmony Art Foundation (who paid a record $2.5m for an F.N.Souza oil at a Christie’s London auction in June last year at the peak of the market); Malvinder Singh, who must be flush with cash after selling his family’s Ranbaxy pharma company to Daiichi of Japan and owns the Religare Arts Initiative and gallery (and is in the news today buying ten hospitals); and Kiran Nadar, wife of Shiv Nadar who controls the HCL IT company.

Anish Kapoor sculptures (see below)

I also saw Rajeev Sethi, Delhi’s arts doyen who runs the Asian Heritage Foundation, and Suhel Seth, an irrepressible marketing personality who’s on the board of British Airways, clinching deals.

For an entrance fee of Rs200, people had direct access to the stands of 55 art galleries, including 17 abroad – from the US, UK, Germany and elsewhere including even Latvia and the Philippines. And there was more than just the galleries. There were shows by young artists and children, and more exclusive seminars.

“There are good vibes, things are happening,” said Anders Peterson of ArtTactic, a London based analysis firm, who believes the market has bottomed out.

At the seminars, the successes as well as the fault lines of the Indian art market were discussed. Why is it for example that India has so many art investment funds – more than 12, and probably more than any other country, suggested Maithili Parekh of Sotheby’s. The Indian stock market watchdog SEBI is supposed to regulate them, but has done little, despite questionable links between funds and some galleries and auctioneers.

Amrita Jhaveri, an art consultant, talked about such conflicts of interest, saying “it’s an extremely cosy world based more on co-operation than competition”.

Other speakers included big collectors such as Anupam Poddar (left) of the Devi Art Foundation, gallery owners such as Peter Nagy of Nature Morte, and top artists such as Subodh Gupta, all of whom who were accessible walking round the exhibition halls.

Galleries are shy about revealing exactly what they had sold, but everyone I spoke to was happy with the outcome, and several from abroad said it far exceeded their limited expectations.

London’s Lisson Gallery was rumoured to have reported sales of £1m (nearly Rs80m), which included one, or maybe two, works thought to be priced at £400,000-500,000, by Anish Kapoor, an Indian-born British sculptor who has an exhibition opening in September at London’s Royal Academy (pic with two of his works above).

Beck & Eggeling of Düsseldorf had a striking oil on canvas (below – and trimmed upside down above right) by Viveek Sharma of Barack Obama standing on his head on a chess board, supported by the Hindu monkey god Hanuman – presumably a metaphor for Obama taking on the problems of the world with the help of Hanuman, who once carried a mountain on his shoulders to help save the life of his master’s brother. The gallery sold that work for approaching $15,000 (Rs730,000) and also a small Picasso drawing for $25,000.

'Deep' by Vivek Sharma - Beck & Eggeling

Among Indian galleries, the Delhi Art Gallery said it sold 15 works priced between Rs50,000 and Rs50 lakhs ($1,030–$103,000) including works by leading artists such as Souza, S.H.Raza. and Sohan Qadri, while the Dhoomimal Gallery sold works by H.A.Gade and Satish Gujral.

There were, of course, no M.F.Husain works available – they were excluded from the show for fear of vandalism.

The event was organised by Mumbai-based Hanmer MS&L Communications, which has no connections with the incestuous art world (that must be a good thing!).

It was a success beyond the figures and sales because it opened up India’s art market to people – young as well as old – who would be reluctant to walk into the forbidding arena of many art galleries. Many of them will be future buyers.

The exhibition halls were packed, especially on the last day, and looked, said Ashish Anand of the Delhi Art Gallery, “more like a trade fair’s public day than an art event”.

'Holy Bread' by Anita Arbidane - Ivonna Veiherte Art Gallery, Latvia

Mumbai, Aug. 21 Tata Teleservices looks to partner with laptop and netbook makers for promoting its mobile broadband service, Photon, among buyers of new computers.

The Mumbai-based firm is currently in talks with companies such as Lenovo, HCL, Dell, Toshiba and others for the same.

“We are looking to sign up with laptop manufactures to see whether they can incorporate the Tata Photon as a purchase device along with their laptops and also give special offers on the same. The days of people buying a laptop without going in for connectivity options have clearly gone,” Mr Lloyd Mathias, President- Business Development, VAS & Chief Marketing Officer told Business Line.

Tata Tele already has a tie-up with Hewlett-Packard; consumers can get a Rs 3,500 Photon Plus for Rs 1,200 when they buy a HP/Compaq laptop.

The company is expected to sign up with at least two more laptop manufacturers in the next few months.
