Source: articleage.com

If we take a look at the way the home video technology has progressed over the years, we will be amazed at the extent to which it has changed in such a short period. The VHS (Video Home System) technology brought motion pictures into our living rooms and bedrooms. It was followed by the CDs, VCDs, and SVCDs that were more expensive, but provided excellent quality and utility. This was followed by the DVDs and DVD players that took the market by storm and became the most preferred mode for recording and viewing, dvd, of movies. Most recently however,, dvd, the latest technology that has joined the race is HD DVD (High Definition Digital Video, dvd, Disc), that has much higher storage capacity and enhanced quality attributes, dvd, .
Correspondingly, there has been a similar evolution in the digital data storage and handling industry. This journey started with the floppy, followed by the CDs,, dvd, the laser discs, the DVDs, and then the HD DVDs. Data storage and handling are a field by itself and has grown at a phenomenal rate.
VHS
The first step towards home theater was the Video Home System (VHS), introduced in September 1976. It was developed by JVC along with some licensing agreements with Sony. The VHS is a recording and playing standard for the, dvd, Video Cassette Recorders, well known all over the world as the VCRs. The VHS could record and play back all the analog television signals in existence at the time it was devised. By today’s standards, it is one of the poorest quality video formats. The video recording cassette being, dvd, big, its recording camera was also big and cumbersome. This led to problems, dvd, of handling and transportation.
The VHS-C is the Video Home System-Compact, which is the same in quality as compared, dvd, to the standard VHS,, dvd, that is, half inch size and 240 lines, dvd, of resolution. But as the name suggests, it is more compact and allows for the video camera to be lighter, smaller, and more convenient. The VHS-C has to be placed in a regular VHS sized case to enable it to be, dvd, played on the VHS player. The 8mm VHS tapes are smaller in size and are very convenient to use in recording cameras, but are not compatible with the regular VCRs and cannot be played, dvd, directly on the VCRs.
CD and VCD
The Compact Disc (CD) is an optical disc that is read by a laser. It is a polycarbonate disc designed to store data, music and video formats. These were played on CD players and were of the CD-R and, dvd, CD-RW type in particular. It was designed by Philips and Sony in 1988. In 1993, Matsushita, Philips, Sony, and JVC introduced a CD format that could hold a full- motion video. It was called the Video CD (VCD) or the compact disc digital video and had a standard digital format for storing video on a compact disc. These VCDs could be played on VCD players and computers. A video CD can hold VHS-quality video of 74 minutes and has a CD-quality sound using MPEG-1 compression. The VCDs were very popular in the Asian countries due, dvd, to their affordability factor, but did not get much popularity in the U.S. or Europe.
The low cost, dvd, of media resulted in rampant unauthorized copying of movies and was hence not widely supported by the United States entertainment fraternity. The Super Video CD introduced later using the MPEG-2 compression was of better quality, but its playing time got diminished to 35 minutes. A DVDV or double VCD had also been designed, in which, a regular CD was ‘Over-burned’ to incorporate 100 minutes, dvd, of video.
DVD and HD DVD
The DVDs came into the market in 1997 and were an instant success. This was mainly because of the reason, that even their cheapest version, dvd, was capable of giving a better picture and sound quality than a VHS, and could process information much more effectively than CDs. With a DVD played back on a DVD player, a consumer could have a much better home entertainment experience. DVD players have been designed to play multi region DVDs, and can playback any TV standard like NTSC, PAL or SECAM. The DVD players are compatible with a wide range of media such as CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, MP3, DivX, and many more.
Riding on the success of the DVD market, the HD DVD or High Definition DVD was introduced in 2005 and was an adaptation of the existing basic structure of the DVD. The HD DVD has a greater storage capacity and can provide better audio and video quality as compared to a DVD. All this is achievable at a marginal cost increase, mainly because the HD DVD can be manufactured using the existing manufacturing facilities for DVDs. This affordability factor is a great contributor to the success of HD DVDs. The HD DVDs are available in ROM, readable and re-writable formats. The HD DVD players are designed using all the features provided in the DVD players. The HD DVDs are integrated with a state-of-the-art content protection technology which is unique to this medium.
The storage capacity is 15 GB for single layer, 30BG for dual layer, and 45GB for a triple layer HD DVD. Also it uses highly sophisticated compression techniques using, dvd, MPEG-4 for increased capacity. A 15 GB HD DVD can store a full movie and incorporate, dvd, additional features,, dvd, with space to spare. Whereas as 30 GB HD DVD can store three movies of 150 minutes each and provide the high definition quality of playback. These features make HD DVDs a favored medium for storage and viewing of movies. With the widespread support from the entertainment industry leaders and the, dvd, high quality service provided by HD DVDs, they are certainly poised for a highly successful stint.

Star Wars Movie Poster

Today there is only one first run movie theatre chain in the whole of Canada, so even the most successful movies only play for a matter of weeks.

But back in the 1970’s there was still competition among Canadian movie theatres so Star Wars actually played on Canadian movie screens for over a year. When the first Star Wars movie was released I was so caught up in it that I ended up going out to see it in a variety of movie theatres thirteen times during that first year.

I am a huge Star Wars fan.

I bought all the Star Wars merchandise that I could afford. In those days there were no DVDs or downloads. VCRs had just come on the market and they were prohibitively expensive.

So at first those of us who were not indescribably wealthy had to content ourselves with purchasing vinyl record albums that ran at 33 1/3rd rpm on an old fashioned machine called a record player. I bought the music in the form of the John Williams Star Wars soundtrack album, as well as a record called “The Story of Star Wars”, a synopsis of the story narrated by C3PO with audio clips from the film. To this day any time I hear the 20th Century Fox music tag I flash on the “real” Star Wars opening.

And today the George Lucas’s Star Wars empire continues to make money in new ways. I don’t have a problem with that. It is a business after all.

I still love Star Wars, particularly the first one. And this article in no way intends any disrespect. I’m telling you about my connection with Star Wars because the incredible success that Star Wars had makes it a good example. That, and because Star Wars was the very first videotape movie I saw played on a VCR in a private home.

What I really want to do today (besides procrastinate from working on my NaNoWriMo novel) is to look at personal use copying as a copyright infringement issue.

The Copyright Lobby makes no distinction between commercial bootleggers who distribute illegal copies for profit and legal purchasers who seek to make a back-up copy or digital format shift for personal use. Because they insist it is all the same thing, the Copyright Lobby has been pressuring governments the world over in an attempt to criminalize personal use copying.

I think there is a problem with the terminology here because calling both things by the same name is horribly misleading. Both activities involve digital copying, but that is where the similarity ends. Just as apples and oranges are both fruit but they are really not the same at all.

apples and oranges

One thing the Copyright Lobby calls “piracy” would be more accurately called “Bootlegging”. Bootleg music recordings have been around as long as audio recording technology has existed. People have smuggled recording devices into concerts and made copies which they have then sold around the world. There have also been professional bootleggers who have copied recorded music and repackaged it to sell illegally. These activities have resulted in lost revenue for music distributors, and in fact should be illegal.

The other thing the Copyright Lobby calls “piracy” is what I call “Personal use copying”. This covers a much wider range of activities, but the chief defining factor of personal use copying is the fact that this digital copying is not for profit. Rather than resulting in lost revenue for distributors, personal use copying relieves the burden of format shifting from the manufacturer to the consumer. When shared through p2p networks personal use copying serves as a means of promoting these commercial products in the same way that radio and television broadcasts have done under the traditional business model. This type of copying should be legal.

The Copyright Lobby’s effort to criminalize this type of copying simply alienates the customer base. Like DRM or SOC methods, it does absolutely nothing to stem the flow of bootlegging.

When did the idea of ownership change?

It used to be that when you bought something you owned it. You were free to do with it what you liked. Even if it was something covered under copyright law… like a book, you were entitled to read that book as many times as you wanted to.

You could loan it to a friend.

You could quote from it in an essay

You could read it aloud to your blind grandmother.

And at the end of the day it was still your book. Unless you decided you no longer wanted it, at which time you could legally sell it to a used book store.

Now lets look at what’s been happening so far in the information age. Manufacturers of recorded music and movies have their materials covered under copyright. They want us to not make copies for our own personal use, even though we have paid them the price they ask.

Personal use copying is not the same thing as bootlegging for commercial gain.

The Problem

Original Star Wars Betamax videotape

When videotape and VCRs first came on the market, it cost on the order of $100 to purchase Star Wars (I refer to the “real” Star Wars movie… back in the days of ancient history when there was only one which was simply called Star Wars… “Star Wars Episode One” did not yet exist).

If you purchased Star Wars in the Sony Betamax version back then, you would have found yourself out of luck a few short years later when Sony stopped making Betamax VCRs. When your Betamax machine became inoperable, you could no longer buy a new one, which of course rendered the tape you purchased in good faith unplayable. No one warned the unfortunate consumers that invested in Betamax tapes and Betamax equipment. I never heard of anyone getting refunds from the movie companies. Or the MPAA. Or Sony. Etc.

Star Wars on VHS

So now the copy of the Star Wars movie is no longer playable. Obviously, you thought that you would be able to keep playing that movie whenever you wanted to for the rest of your life. The same way that you will be able read your paperback copy of Anne of Green Gables as many times as you like for as long as you live.

But.

Now you can’t. So what do you do if you really loved Star Wars?

You go out and buy it again. This time on VHS.

The rest of your life, eh? I know that’s what I thought. Didn’t you?

Did Twentieth Century Fox ever offer to reimburse you for the useless hunk of plastic and tape (that you have now purchased twice for your own use) that is now deteriorating? And suddenly it’s near impossible to buy a new VHS machine because there is yet another new technology– now movies are on DVD. Even if you can find a new VHS machine, we’ve all learned that a VCR will be lucky to last for five years anyway. And of course the VCRs you can find now are far more expensive than DVD players. So what’s a fan to do. Oh right.

You go out and buy Star Wars again on DVD.

Star Wars on DVD

[Of course, this particular example is extra irritating because George Lucas hasn't stopped tinkering with the thing, and since he's vowed to never release the REAL version (the one that actually played in theatres in 1977) on DVD, so I will never have the version I want no matter how many times I've paid for it. *sigh*]

But you’re a fan.

So you go out and buy the movie AGAIN on DVD.

At least you have it in a form that will last.

Now HD is gone too.

Or not.

Because then along came HD DVD. The media manufacturers were a little surprised that we didn’t all rush out and buy HD machines.

Replacing our entire video library. AGAIN.

Oh… you were one of those suckers who got conned into converting to bought into HD? Ooooops! Didn’t anyone tell you that the technology you were supposed to back was Blu-Ray?

I could go through the same process to look at the parallels in the music industry: piano rolls, gramophone cylinders, ’78’s, LPs, 8 track tapes, cassette tapes and CDS… all over the course of a single century.

Funny, I have a working gramophone older than I am which will play ’78’s. Yet our modern day electronic equipment will be doing well to work after a decade.

I don’t know about you but I am tired of buying the same movies over and over again.

Copyright is an agreement between the creator/manufacturer and the consumer.

The media distributors have NOT kept their part of the bargain, expecting consumers to pay for the same material over and over again. It should be legal to be able to watch the movie you have purchased in good faith as many times as we want to, for the rest of our lives.

Consumers have not been given any protection by governments the world over.

At the very minimum customers need to be given the right to copy the products they have purchased onto the piece of technology needed to play it.

We believe we own what we have purchased.
They want us to believe that we don’t.

Fortunately our government representatives are in an excellent position to look out for the Canadian consumer interests as they redraft our copyright law for the benefit of Canadians.

Author: John Dulaney Source: articleage.com Initially, the PAL format of broadcasting was quite popu

Author: John Dulaney
Source: articleage.com

Initially, the PAL format of broadcasting was quite popular in Spain, because of two main advantages. PAL gave a much better picture than other formats like NTSC or SECAM. This was because it had a large number of scan lines. Another major advantage why DVD players in Spain had the PAL format was that they played standard DVD discs and they promised color consistency. Manufacturers of DVD players used latest technologies available to play DVDs with utmost picture clarity and perfect sound output. High definition DVD players are the answer for the needs of getting the best output from discs.
High definition DVD players are rapidly becoming very famous in Spain, because in the analog DVD players, you can find slight flicker in the output image displayed on the screen. This is because the number of frames being displayed per second is quite less, which is around 25 frames per second. This drawback is overcome in high definition DVD players where the quality of the picture is at its best and when they play high definition DVDs, the output is enhanced to a greater extent.
There are many manufacturers and companies that mass produce HD-DVD players in Spain. One major company that assembles, dvd, flat panel televisions and high definition DVD players in Spain is Sharp Electronics. Apart from Spain, it also has its factories in China and the U.S. Since a lot of these players are manufactured or assembled here, the price of these DVD players is usually quite considerable.
DVD players usually have a region tag attached to them, depending on their region. Since Spain falls in region two, the DVD players that are manufactured and purchased here tend to play DVDs pertaining to region two. In order to play DVDs that are available all around the world, you need to be specific about it while selecting a high definition DVD player. Just like standard DVD players available in Spain, HD-DVD players are also available with region free or code free options. High definition DVD players provide you a much better picture quality and crystal clear sound, but do not ensure that they play DVDs from all nations. It is the choice of the customers to specify their requirements when buying.
One can also check the Internet to collect information regarding various high definition DVD players available in Spain. A variety of information like the make of the players, features available, models, price range, and guarantee and warranty options can be found through these sites. Some of the brands that offer HD-DVD players in Spain are Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, and Sony. Each company has several models of high definition DVD players in its list and depending on the features and options requested by the customer, they are variedly priced.
Panasonic has, dvd, a huge range of DVD players with around 20 models currently on hand. They are priced from a little over $70 to over $350. Panasonic HD-DVD players are available in intense colors like black and silver, and they usually come up with progressive scan facility. Another famous DVD player manufacturer available in Spain is Philips, which is quite, dvd, a renowned name all over the, dvd, country. With over five different models, Philips players are quite famous in the country. Starting from $75, the models go over $350, depending on the features.
With over a dozen models in its list, Pioneer also finds a place in the leading DVD player companies in Spain. They offer the most cost effective as well as the most expensive high definition DVD players in Spain. You can pick one for just about $60 or can even go for one priced over $900. Sharp Electronics assembles its DVD players in Spain. The assembled models are marketed effectively all over Spain and are, dvd, priced considerably around $250. Sony DVD players are considered one of the most cost effective DVD players available in Spain. They are, dvd, available for around $80 for the basic models.
Whenever you go in for the high-definition DVD players, you can make a note of the various specifications mentioned about the product. It is important to look out for the region free option and other specifications like digital audio out-coaxial. This is the general form of output for any high definition DVD player. You can look for multi color TFT monitor, which is widely available and quite famous in the electronic market of Spain. The players also come up with functions,, dvd, dvd, like multi-subtitle languages function, multi-audio languages function, and also multi-angle function. Like any other standard DVD player in Spain, high definition players also have the basic features like parental control and remote control facility.
High definition DVDs are new generation discs that store data and make the experience of watching movies at home a thoroughly, dvd, enjoyable one. Another such technological advancement which is prominent in the entertainment industry is blu-ray. Blu-ray discs, just like high definition, dvd, discs, are capable of displaying the best quality picture and clear digital sound. These new video disc formats need special features in DVD players to broadcast the video signals. Hence in Spain, you have to look out for DVD players that are compatible to both these high definition formats. This is to ensure that the DVD players you choose, dvd, are consumer friendly and are worth the investment you make in them. HD-DVD players usually play all kinds of discs like audio CDs and MP3s and also discs that have optical standards.
If you already have a DVD player and want it to play high definition discs, you can use a high-definition multi-media interface, which is a digital interface standard. Many movie making companies are now interested to release their movies in high definition format or in blu-ray format, and hence analog televisions and standard DVD players find it difficult to play various movies that are released in either of these two formats. With high definition DVD players, you can play the existing discs as well as the new generation digital discs at almost the same efficiency. Hollywood studios, Microsoft, Intel, and many other companies have encouraged the next generation high-definition format, which has become, dvd, the order of the day.

Author: Kyle Kolbe

At Frye’s over the weekend I saw two half shelves worth of HD-DVD software. This is only, dvd, remarkable because I had not been to an electronics, dvd, superstore recently to see such a display. I know they’ve been out for weeks or a month or, dvd, a I don’t care.
The HD-DVDs were grouped at the end of the anime section just before the nature and historical videos. I can’t, dvd, remember the first weeks or months of DVD’s launch but, dvd, it was probably just as pathetic (I remember only seeing Eraser and Twister DVDs for a year before I cared about DVD as a source of entertainment). The discs were packaged in the same clam cases as normal DVDs, the “HD-DVD” banner at the top was the only tip-off. Blockbuster!/must buy! titles included: Rumor Has It, The Chronicles of Riddick, Van Helsing, Swordfish, Doom.
This is all, dvd, I get after dropping $500 on my new Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD player? (I ask hypothetically, as I don’t have any such player.) Penny Arcade, dvd, found a use for the Phantom of the Opera HD-DVD, dvd, .
If I were the King of All Home Entertainment, dvd, Media (like Mark Cuban or Mickey Mouse), I’d write this memo to, dvd, all my media minions:
Dear whichever studios are launching HD-DVD: The following titles will force me to adopt your new disc format: Digital Video Essentials (to calibrate before we watch the rest of the launch titles), Star Wars Episodes IV-VI, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, Alien and Aliens, King Kong, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Harry Potter movies, Moulin Rouge, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Princess Mononoke, Serenity (actually this is a launch title! Go Team Whedon), Sin City, Apocalypse Now, E.T., Close Encounters of, dvd, the Third Kind, Jaws, Romeo+Juliet, Fight Club, Terminator 2, A Nightmare Before Christmas, Lion King, The Incredibles, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Spider-Man movies, Batman and Batman Begins, X-Men Movies, Superman 1 and 2, Kill, dvd, Bill, Casablanca, North By Northwest, The Graduate, The Fifth Element, Blue Velvet, and Planet of the Apes.
Now that’s a launch.
After every geek collects their jaws, dvd, from the floor they would be ready to invest in the best HD-DVD player they could, dvd, find. The entire launch catalog described above would break all home video sales records. These are the movies we are willing to buy over and over again. It wouldn’t matter if half of the titles were rushed to production and didn’t eek out the finest high definition quality because, dvd, the movie studios could release an extra special, dvd, edition six months later and we would buy, dvd, it again. The HD-DVD would just have to look and sound marginally better than the best SD-DVD had to offer for the same title.
HD-DVD’s launch needs a huge push. Rumor Has It couldn’t launch a bottle rocket with a flame thrower.
Father, Husband and Geek. My geeky, dvd, interests have not changed since, dvd, I was a kid. I still love comic books, anime, role-playing games, console video games, indie rock, imported, dvd, toys and mecha models, bad American and great British sitcoms, and all the tech that let’s me experience these hobbies to, dvd, their fullest. Now that I’m married with children, I’ve had to strike a balance between supporting and pleasing my family and feeding my geekery hunger. Lucky for me, my wife is very accomodating and even geeks, dvd, out with me on occasion (the ladies love Joss Whedon’s “Firefly”). My two year old likes anything that moves on the front projection screen and makes noise, so far she is easy to please. Geekwithfamily.com exists to enrich the lives of fellow geeks and the friends and family who put up with them.

What led them to this choice, as all four studios stated separately, is better performance for the price and copyright protection.
The other standard in competition, the Blu-ray disc, unconditionally backed, dvd, by Sony Pictures Entertainment, is also counting on support from Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Twentieth Century Fox (the latter, dvd, has recently joined the Blu-Ray Disc Association Board).
The Blu-ray disc has more world leading electronics companies that support it: Sony, LG Electronics, Matsushita (Panasonic), Mitsubishi, Samsung, Sharp, TDK, Philips, Pioneer, Hitachi. Also, computer giants Dell and Hewlett Packard.
The HD DVD standard is being, dvd, developed by Toshiba, Sanyo and NEC, under the endorsement of the DVD Forum.
Both HD DVD and Blu-ray standards use the same wavelength blue-lasers that permit data storage on the disc at a higher density. This enhances the disc capacity and allows the recording of high definition video, dvd, on DVD support.
Wining the support of the big Hollywood movie studios is most important in the DVD format battle. Up to this moment, the four studios that gave their endorsement to HD DVD technology represent 45% of the DVD pre-recorded movie market.
The launch of DVD players in the HD DVD format is being expected for the last quarter of 2005.

The time has come for Toshiba and Nec, the main backers of HD-DVD format to announce they’re ready for write-once HD-DVD-R disc mass production.
Their discs can store 15 GB of data, and should be available for the consumers in the, dvd, first half of the next year, by the same time that HD-DVD recorders and PC drives will be also on the market.
As we all know, HD-DVD fights in a tight competition with Blu-ray for the “format of, dvd, the future” title, that also means a multibillion dollar market as a price for the winner.
Similar blue laser technology stays at the core of both formats, as the blue laser has a shorter wavelength than the red lasers used in current DVD equipment, allowing discs to store data at higher densities needed for high-definition TV and movies.
The advantage that HD-DVD-R disc has over its main competitor, the Blu-ray disc is it has the same disc structure as the classic DVD and thus can be manufactured, dvd, by using the same production lines. This, for the DVD manufacturers, means they can start HD-DVD-R mass production at full speed, right away, with not much additional cost. A replacement stamper is needed of course and the old dye must be replaced with blue-light sensitive, resin dye. The new dye was developed in a joint project of Hayashibara Biochemical Laboratories, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media/Verbatim and Toshiba Corporation.
But at the same time, Blu-ray competitor has its own advantages, like superior storing capacity. Toshiba claims it works at this aspect also, but moving from single-layer discs that are written at 1x speed, to dual-layer 30GB discs could take several years, its spokespersons said. Toshiba promised to introduce, dvd, 20GB HD-DVD-RW discs by this time next year.
So, dvd, far, the Blu-ray Disc Association and the HD DVD Promotion Group have refused to compromise to a unified hybrid format for the future DVD.

Author: Madison Lockwood Source: download Once again, there is a, dvd, technology format war looming

Author: Madison Lockwood
Source: download

Once again, there is a, dvd, technology format war looming on the horizon. Many people don’t remember the VHS – Betamax battle that broke out when video players were first introduced, making it possible for people to watch movies at home. This was a case of two non-compatible technologies, each of which was a format for taping full length feature films. Ultimately VHS won, dvd, out, and the movie companies put out their, dvd, products in that format – thus dooming Betamax and the product manufacturers that had adopted, dvd, their technology, not to mention the thousands of consumers that had invested in Betamax players, dvd, . We now find ourselves on the verge of creating a new set of sore losers.
Skirmishes over LCD versus plasma, dvd, screen HD TV technology are ongoing, but that type of technology contest isn’t as acute because you can watch TV or a movie on, dvd, either, dvd, type of screen. Currently, you can also play every DVD available on any DVD player that is in production and on the market. The next generation of DVD players, however, is coming over the horizon in the form of two distinct and incompatible technologies.
Toshiba versus Sony
Toshiba has developed a proprietary technology dubbed high definition DVD (HDDVD) and to support their, dvd, format has developed alliances with Microsoft and Universal Films, among others. The HDDVD disks will be available in 15GB and two sided, 30GB versions, dvd, .
By way of comparison, the current DVDs have enough, dvd, storage for two hours of standard definition (SD) images, while the one-sided 15 gigabyte HDDVD disk can store up to eight hours of high, dvd, definition (HD) images. The difference between SD and, dvd, HD is simply twice the number of pixel lines displayed on the screen in the HD format, thus providing a crisper picture. The increased capacity of these disks will also allow for interactive features such as screen-in-screen director’s discussion of movie scenes playing behind him that today’s standard DVDs cannot support.
In the other corner is the Blu-Ray technology developed by Sony, who has lined up support from Apple, Disney and 20th Century Fox. Both formats use blue laser technology, which has a shorter wavelength than red, allowing it to read the smaller digital data “spots” packed a lot more densely onto a standard-size disc., dvd, Blu-Ray disks, dvd, are designed to carry up to 50GB of digital material, which may mean that Sony wins the compression, dvd, competition.
The Early, dvd, Rounds
Sony Pictures released the first six films on Blu-Ray, dvd, disks in June of this year, and have released a few more since. Samsung has a Blu-Ray DVD player in the stores, while Sony’s hardware, dvd, division has released a Blu-Ray compatible PC. Toshiba has its initial HDDVD player on the market and there are a limited number of titles available in the format, mostly re-releases of previous first-run features.
Sony clearly jumped out to an early lead, with support from Dell, HP, Mitsubishi and a number of other hardware manufacturers. In addition, Sony Pictures also owns Columbia and MGM, giving them an enormous library to work with. Sony will, dvd, also fold its technology into the PlayStation,, dvd, dvd, 3 gaming machine, their proprietary product whose 2nd version rules the roost in the videogame, dvd,, dvd, market.
On the Toshiba side of the battlefield, proponents argue that the HDDVD disks will be cheaper to produce and that it will be comparatively easy for disk replicators to retrofit their equipment for production purposes. The HDDVD format also makes production of recordable DVDs much simpler than with the Blu-Ray design.
Further, an, dvd, alliance with Microsoft will, dvd, be a formidable, dvd, edge in, dvd, this battle, should it turn into a protracted conflict. Microsoft’s operating systems are going, dvd, to be important cogs in the development of future home viewing, dvd, systems, as the technology moves closer to merging the functions of computers and televisions. If movie downloads, dvd, become a commercial success, PC compatibility will be critical for these disks.
The Consumer Issues
One of the reasons that Microsoft aligned with Toshiba’s technology is that HDDVD provides for “mandatory managed copy.” What that means is that unlike with today’s conventional DVDs,, dvd, managed, dvd, copy allows consumers to make,, dvd, dvd, legitimate copies of their HD movies and enjoy this content around the home or across their personal networks. Making this feature mandatory will ensure a consistent consumer experience across all next-generation DVD content.
Then there is the element of iHD, which is the concept, dvd, of maximizing high definition video for transport across the internet. This is a specific set of, dvd, video specs which the iHD.org, a group of tech and media companies, is pushing as a cross-platform standard.
The theory is that next-generation HD movies will provide a level of interactive experience well beyond that of today’s, dvd, conventional DVDs. iHD technology is meant to provide a broad foundation to enable new interactivity with standards-based development tools and technologies.
The pitch, dvd, for this standard is that it will provide consumers with enhanced content, navigation and functionality for HD films. The business reality, dvd, is that Microsoft plans to implement iHD support in its Windows, dvd, Vista operating, dvd, system, which will not only be a significant step towards integrated video and computer systems but will make help drive adoption of the new Microsoft platform.
Duel to the Death Unlikely
There is some indication that all of these conflicting issues may ultimately force a compromise – some sort of merger or unification of the two technologies. Hardware manufacturers are hedging, dvd,, dvd, their bets, with the latest wrinkle being that Blu-Ray-aligned Hewlett Packard has requested that mandatory managed copy and the iHD standard be included in Blu-Ray’s feature set. Sony, dvd, has agreed to include the managed copy feature, but said no to iHD.
The Betamax – VHS battle was a tussle over hardware, dvd, with the movie companies playing a predominant role, one Sony lost. This time around, there is much more uncertainty about how the next generation of home video will roll out. How will the Web and the PC fit in? Will the movies be delivered via disk or via download? How will the film industry protect its content rights and how can the hardware companies maximize their role?
PCs, dvd, have become a commodity. If a scenario arises, dvd, where every household needs a new computer to match up with new video technology, the Dells and HPs of this world, dvd, stand to win big. If competing technology keeps people from investing in either, every involved business will suffer, dvd, . If the film and DVD houses have to produce two sets of content and two disks for every film,, dvd, their margins will grow considerably thinner as well. The tech bloggers seem, dvd, to be increasingly inclined to believe that unification of some sort is inevitable. The corporations with the most to lose, dvd, are too smart not to insist on it.

Author: John Dulaney Source: articleage.com Now the situation has changed with advanced DVD technolo

Author: John Dulaney
Source: articleage.com

Now the situation has changed with advanced DVD technologies. You now have exclusive HD DVDs which offer you superior video and audio output. They also differ from the traditional DVDs in the sense that they are able to store more data on their surfaces. They are all set to revolutionize the home theater market.
Almost, dvd, all major studios in Hollywood like Universal, MGM and Warner, to name only a few, have announced new titles on this high capacity HD DVD. The HD DVD format is being pioneered by Toshiba and NEC, who are credited with inventing the advanced optical disc technology. The new format enables storage of large amount of data, up to 15 GB on a single layered disc and 30 GB on a double layered disc. The format uses the now often heard term, blue laser. The inventors of this format claim that it will cost substantially less than its closest rival, Blu-ray discs.
The high definition DVD player manufacturers are also bracing for the onslaught of this new type of, dvd, DVD, by offering players which have backward compatibility, which enables you to still play your good old DVDs apart from the latest HD DVDs. Some models from Toshiba have already hit the market. These models, dvd, are capable of playing both traditional as well as HD DVDs.
The Current Scenario
The principal rival to the advanced optical disc format is the Blu-ray format. Blu-ray discs are being aggressively, dvd, promoted by leading consumer electronic giants like Sony, Samsung, Philips, Sharp, and Hp to mention a few. These Blu-ray discs, like the advanced optical discs, are capable of storing a large amount of data. In fact they can store more than what the advanced optical discs can store. A single layered Blu-ray disc can store up to 25 GB of data, while a double layered disc can store 50 GB. They also offer excellent video quality with unmatched, dvd, audio output. This technology also uses the blue-violet laser technology, just like the HD DVD technology being promoted by Toshiba, dvd, and NEC.
A major advantage with Blu-ray format lies in the fact that the entire technology is ‘backwards compatible, dvd, .’ That is, you can now play your old CDs and traditional, dvd, DVDs on them. All you need to check for is a BD/DVD/CD compatible unit. So, you need not worry about buying a player with Blu-ray technology, dvd, and not being able to use it. The Blu-ray movie codes are different though from that of DVD region codes. So while the Americas and East Asia will have one code, you will have different codes for countries like China, Russia, and India and others.
Most of the modern day high definition DVD players would be able play both advanced optical discs and Blu-ray discs. While most of them will play these discs in high resolution, some may play them in low resolution. It is therefore important that you check for the specifications of your DVD players to find out whether they can play HD DVDs in them.
Both types though have certain similarities, like being able to play on most of the high definition DVD players or, dvd, your old DVD players. One major difference between the two types of discs lies in the coating. While the coating on Blu-ray discs enable them to store more data, it is not, dvd, so for HD DVDs. It is a generally accepted fact that Blu-ray discs have more data on each layer than HD DVDs.
One reason for the aggressive promotion of HD DVDs is because they cost less, when compared to Blu-ray discs. The cheaper cost is due to the entire manufacturing process, which is a whole lot cheaper.
Compatibility
The battle between the two camps promoting HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs is picking, dvd, up, with major players taking sides. Intel and Microsoft are also promoting the HD DVD format, apart from Toshiba and NEC, while Blu-ray discs find favor with Sony, Samsung, Philips, Sharp, and most of the Hollywood studios. One thing is for sure though, the future of the home theater segment lies in the hands of these formats.
If you, dvd, are already in the market for an HD DVD player, you can always go in for one without worrying whether they will, dvd, be able to play your traditional DVDs on them, because most of them will. On the flipside, your new movie on an HD DVD won’t play on your old DVD. Since the size of the HD DVDs is similar to that of conventional CDs, manufacturers are able to make newer players, which can handle both. The thing which dictates the compatibility factor is the laser. Once a player has a laser pickup that reads either of the formats, then everything becomes easy, you can now happily play your old DVDs apart from the latest HD DVDs.
The latest HD DVD models from Toshiba are able to read DVDs, HD DVDs, and CDs. If you are thinking of upgrading to an HD DVD player, then it is preferable that you also go in for an HDTV, which most of the homes even in advanced countries like the U.S. don’t have. The use of HD DVDs is all set to gain widespread, dvd, popularity in near future, and purchasing an HD DVD player is not a bad option, even if you were not able to purchase several HD DVDs.
You still can watch other DVDs on them. An HD DVD can store both regular and high definition content on the same disc. There are some discs which have a combination of formats; they have DVD formats on one side and HD DVD format on the other. Thus, they enable you to play them on virtually any DVD player.
The concept of twin or combination discs is being, dvd, embraced quickly among libraries and video rental stores, since not everyone has an, dvd, HD DVD player. With the Blu-ray format breathing, dvd, down its neck, most people are waiting for one clear winner to emerge before making their purchase decision for a high definition video playback system, dvd, .
The trend is almost similar in most parts of the world, dvd, . There are some manufacturers who are trying, dvd, to capture the market with other technologies, dvd, like the Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD), mostly from China. Chinese models which play this format are already available in the market. They are compatible, dvd, with DVDs, HD DVDs, CDs, and HVDs. Most of the European countries like France, Spain, UK, Greece, and Germany are bracing for the newer technologies too, with their own, dvd, DVD players. With increased competition between the formats, we are surely heading for a period of exciting, dvd, prospects.
Where to get REGION FREE DVD players/recorders. To prevent the latest movies from reaching countries where a film has not reached theaters yet, Hollywood, dvd, studios imposed a block. This regional coding is a digital flag on the disc that tells the DVD player where a particular DVD comes from. This is supposed to prevent the disc from being used by an incompatible player in another country. A normal DVD player can only play discs designated for the player’s own particular region. However, a codefree DVD player is a capable of playing DVD discs from anywhere around the world. A codefree DVD player can play DVD discs from all 6 regions and both standards, PAL and NTSC. That’s every DVD movie on earth! PAL-NTSC 110-220, dvd, volts DVD/VCR Combos for use worldwide.

Sekarang, 2009

HD-DVD RIP, Long Live Blue-ray!

Yaitu perang definisi tinggi format digital. Yah Sony… Saya akui sebagai permainan yang menarik.. Well played Sony… Anda telah bermain dengan baik…

Oh iya satu lagi, jika Anda ingin melihat liputan film populer / paling laris dari Blue-ray film, check this out.

If you have had the privilege to live for the past 30 years, you have been able to see multiple media formats rise and fall like the success of tv show remakes. From Beta vs VHS to DVD to HD-DVD vs Blu-ray disc, the media evolution continues to thrive as long as we think “This is it! We have the Best!” For right now, our sights are set on the Blu-ray format, you know, the format that won the High Definition wars, the format that has stolen the hearts of every entertainment junkie that is willing to part with his cold hard cash to have the best quality 1080p video and 24bit surround sound. But who can afford it? Perhaps the guy that spent the money for the best display, and the monstrous sound system. A person that is expecting to use his Home theater to the fullest. Playstation 3 helped Blu-ray win the format wars against HD-DVD, and a Playstation 3 is probably the best investment for a Blu-ray player (that will remain for another review). The Truth is, for the person that spent enormous amounts of money on a stellar Home Theater System, Blu-ray are not as expensive as they could be.

For me, I buy Blu-ray, but with a method. Transformers 2=Blu-ray, but as for the Wizard of Oz=DVD! I want movies that will make me sit-up and drool at the pristine explosions and detailed action. Not restorations of old movies that will at best look like they did when they were first seen…which was not that great at all. The Blu-ray format is for the movie buff that wants sensory overloads and breath-taking images, the guy that knows it is better to stay home and pop in a movie than to go to the theater and watch a film with 30 of his not so close friends. Blu-ray is an experience, DVD is a movie. The Price tag is justifiable for what you get, in fact, I think tonight is movie night!

This is not a good month for Microsoft. First the 360 loses its support for 3rd-party memory units,

This is not a good month for Microsoft. First the 360 loses its support for 3rd-party memory units, Modern Warfare 2 loses its dedicated servers on the PC version and now Microsoft are planning on adding Blu-ray to the 360 as an accessory.

In an interview with Gizmodo, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was asked if we’ll ever see a Xbox 360 with a built in Blu-ray disc drive.

“Well I don’t know if we need to put Blu-ray in there—you’ll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories,” said Ballmer.

“I think the future of movies is on-demand actually, as opposed to via distribution on physical media. So we’re just going to keep driving forward and try to make [Xbox 360] the best overall entertainment experience, and not just gaming.”

Did Ballmer just let something slip? Again? Oopsy daisy…

Microsoft quickly tried to cover Ballmer’s statement saying, “Our solution for HD quality video on an Xbox 360 is coming this fall with Zune Video and 1080p instant-on HD streaming. As far as our future plans are concerned, we’re not ready to comment.”

All I have to say is – Microsoft, you’ve lost. If you add Blu-ray to your console then you are just admitting defeat. Your HD-DVD format was a failure and now you must adapt to the superior format that is Blu-ray.

Sony must be cackling their heads off right about now, just like me.

88/100

QuickTime 7 features a state-of-the-art video codec called H.264, which delivers stunning quality at remarkably low data rates. Ratified as part of the MPEG-4 standard (MPEG-4 Part 10), this ultra-efficient technology gives you excellent results across a broad range of bandwidths, from 3G for mobile devices to iChat AV for video conferencing to HD for broadcast and DVD.

Massive Quality, Minimal Files

H.264 uses the latest innovations in video compression technology to provide incredible video quality from the smallest amount of video data. This means you see crisp, clear video in much smaller files, saving you bandwidth and storage costs over previous generations of video codecs. H.264 delivers the same quality as MPEG-2 at a third to half the data rate and up to four times the frame size of MPEG-4 Part 2 at the same data rate. H.264 is truly a sight to behold.

Scalable from 3G to HD and Beyond

H.264 achieves the best-ever compression efficiency for a broad range of applications, such as broadcast, DVD, video conferencing, video-on-demand, streaming and multimedia messaging. And true to its advanced design, H.264 delivers excellent quality across a wide operating range, from 3G to HD and everything in between. Whether you need high-quality video for your mobile phone, iChat, Internet, broadcast or satellite delivery, H.264 provides exceptional performance at impressively low data rates.
