[Incudie] tipped us off about a method to fix a borked HDD in your Xbox 360. Many of the one million consoles banned earlier in the month also had the hard disks scrambled making off-line gaming impossible as well. It turns out that this is caused by having a ban flag in the NAND chip on the motherboard. It has been discovered that because of wear levelling, the NAND will have two copies of the “secdata.bin” file which stores the ban flag. Please note, this will NOT allow the console to use Xbox Live, it just re-enables the HDD.

The quick and dirty of the fix is as follows: First the NAND is dumped from your Xbox 360 to a computer. After verifying the file, it can be opened in a HEX editor and the two copies of “secdata.bin” located. Once identified by date, the older version is injected on top of the newer to overwrite the ban flag.

Looks like this is not for the faint of heart, but if you got banned for modding in the first place this should be easy to pull off.

Google believes that the Chrome OS will effectively act as a gateway to the web, allowing users to store their filed and documents on remote servers rather than storing in hard disks.

Ever imagined a computer system without a hard disk drive? Well, soon there will be such systems that will need just a few gigabytes of storage, allowing users to store their documents, photos and videos on remote servers through Internet.

At least, that seems the vision of Internet giant Google, which recently demonstrated its new operating system — Chrome OS.

The operating system, which Google believes will revolutionise computing, effectively acts as a gateway to the web, allowing users to store their filed and documents on remote servers rather than storing in hard disks.

Users can access their emails, documents or social networking sites by clicking on application tabs in the browser— like interface and use panels at the bottom of the desktop to send an instant message or view a video, The Telegraph reported.

Computers can boot up faster and get connected with web in just seven seconds through the operating system, termed the “cloud computing” approach, it said.

“We want Chrome to be blazingly fast,” said Sundar Pichai, Google’s vice president of product management. “We want it to be like a TV — turn it on and it’s booted up.”

“Chrome will run only on computers that use flash memory solid state drives instead of conventional hard drives.”

“Over the past few years, people have been spending more and more of their time online doing more and more powerful things, and we wanted to build a fundamentally different computing experience built for the way we use the web today,” says Mr. Pichai.

“With Google Chrome OS, we’ve made computing faster, easier and safer than ever before.”

But some experts say Google could find it difficult to persuade consumers. Users will not be able to install their own software or applications on Chrome OS devices — so that means no iTunes, no Skype and no Tweetdeck.

“There’s no doubt that Chrome OS looks fast, but it’s fairly limited in terms of its functionality,” says Annette Jump, an analyst with Gartner. “A lot of work needs to be done to convince consumers that this operating system will be useful to them.”

Another problem Chrome OS faces is its reliance on always-on web connectivity, which might be possible in large cities, with good mobile phone network coverage and plenty of Wi—Fi hotspots, but in rural areas, or on a flight, Chrome will be hobbled.

Google has also released the code to the operating system in the hope that developers would build new products, services and applications, in much the same way as they build apps for the iPhone, or Google’s mobile phone operating system, Android.

The reason I am resurecting this blog is because I just have to tell the world – the last two years were amazing, full of beautiful images and sunny days, I have collected amost 300GB of the most incredible footage of all things marine, 6m across manta rays circiling me, leopard sharks, whale sharks, turtles, my God, trevally feeding sequences that would blow your mind and so much more, its hard to even talk about it, as

The new stupid, stupid hard disk I bought and saved all of these gems onto this morning has decided to become completely blank. How is this possible? I am so so sad. It came up with a message when I plugged it in saying it was not ejected properly, offered to scan for file errors and bad sectors bla bla bla, scanned, informed me it is working properly and mounted itself totally empty.

I feel sick to my stomach, all this work, all these memories I am totally heartbroken.

The current range of Hardbox hard disk drives seems startlingly under-reviewed, so I am going to give you my thoughts on their desktop line.

The Hardbox drives are available in various capacities, but the one I have has a 250GB capacity. I bought it from the wonderful stockist Pine Digital Ltd.

The product that I have on my desk is large-ish and coloured in a striking orange and black scheme. The power cable is provided as is a USB cable. Once these are both plugged in, the drive boots up. I thought at first it’s a noisy racket, but compared to Seagate or WD offerings, it’s quite quiet. The exceedingly bright LED is a feature of annoyance, though – it lights up the whole room.

The drive seems to work happily enough (pre-formatted) like a plug-and-play device, and copying media through a USB hub is fast enough (no Firewire). There is also backup software for Windows users who don’t have Time Machine, which is good for Mac folk. The backup can be initiated by pushing the single, LED-ized button, which confusingly turns it on and off as well.

As functions and looks go, the drive is really just like any good one you can pick up, but from where I got it, quite a bit cheaper. The price per GB is good and the energy saving mode which stops the disk from “spinning” is very nice. In this mode, the stupid light is also dimmed slightly.

Over the course of time, the drive has filled slightly, but it’s big enough for a huge archive and I particularly commend its reliability – even without generally accepted precautions this drive keeps ticking.

I recommend this product with a 4/5 star rating – it is reliable and cheap, as well as easy to use, but the interface is a bit silly for me.

P.S. A good Christmas present and good for all kinds of storage – replace that CD cabinet in your father’s study, maybe?

Dalam hitungan hari sejak diperingatkan SMART, Anda harus segera menyelamatkan data Anda dari harddisk tersebut.

Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF) harddisk umumnya 3-5 tahun. Sebagai generasi digital yang mengandalkan penyimpanan dokumen, foto, video berupa file digital, Anda tentu tidak ingin kehilangan file-file tersebut. Gantilah harddisk Anda secara berkala, setidaknya sambil menunggu teknologi Solid State Disk (SSD) yang akan segera hadir dan MTBF-nya lebih lama.

Untuk mengganti harddisk, ada cara mudah yang membuat Anda tidak perlu menginstal ulang sistem operasi. Lakukan disk cloning, misalnya dengan bantuan software EaseUs DiskCopy. Cara kerjanya mirip dengan Norton Ghost tapi tanpa perlu network. Semua file di harddisk lama termasuk sistem operasinya akan disalin ke harddisk baru dalam waktu singkat.
