Yes. I’m getting an HD TV.

I’ve been doing my research and I am comfortable with what I am looking to get.  Very good reviews and specs and the price is just right.  So…  As this is posting to the blog, I’m on the road to go to the store and pick up my new TV.  I will use my Sony Trinitron 27” to replace the TV that has gone bad for my 81 year old mom.

She said she doesn’t need all the bells and whistles and understand my tv perfectly so it’s all working out.

I was debating about getting a Sony, however, I am seeing very good reviews on an LG model I am looking at.  Best Buy has it for $150 off and it seems to do everything I will be looking into a first HD set.

I may not leave the bedroom now (LOL!)

The important thing is this is not busting my budget and getting me into trouble.  It’s all cash so that’s a good thing.  It’s very easy to get in trouble with credit cards.  They are a tool that can be a great asset and it can bite you big time if you do not use them wisely.  I’ve learned the hard way on that one.

The mission was simple. Score a 32″ HDTV at Target and get out before the devil knows . . . ahhh, anyway. It didn’t work out.

4:03- The line to get into Target is rock concert long. I never dropped acid before but I’m thinking that was because it was later in the day and I had bucco options for my happy place. In other words, I never really had an adequate excuse for such a thing. Until now.

I understand the concept of Black Friday just fine, but maybe retailers could be a little more mindful of this gastric bypass of an economy and tack on an additional Black Friday? In like, July? I’m guessing that little prick Jack Frost will provide the necessary cryogenic effect for my high value items which are busy jingling without benefit of boxers because I felt like going European. Never mind that, not even science is going to want my junk by the end of this morning.

4:12- I check my watch to discover that thirty eight seconds have passed since I took my spot. Not having gone for a haircut since the Mets were still in contention may have been a fortuitous stroke of procrastination on my part. I can light my mane on fire. Hell, I can probably charge admission. And since the public option hasn’t passed the Senate yet, I can get into the ER before Monday.

4:31- My sisters show up, finally. They’re working on their second pack of smokes and their third gallon of coffee. What a team they make. I’m definitely coming back as a lesbian in my next life.

5:08- I’m licking my chops as I move closer to my 32 inches worth of glory. I don’t care how gay it sounds. I decide to have my picture taken with him.

4. I’m still not used to there being a 3rd NFL game on Thanksgiving. I actually completely missed it. Who won?
5. Today is the day after Thanksgiving. There’s no stopping the onslaught of Christmas commercials, music, etc. now. Of course, now that it’s the next holiday up on the docket, that’s ok. Before now, not so much.

My hunt for a cheap, 32″ LCD TV via one of Black Friday’s so-called “door-busting” sales is over. And it ended in frustration, anger and tears. OK, just anger and frustration.

Like many others this holiday season, I found myself in want of a new HDTV, and (foolishly) decided to try my hand at purchasing the heavily discounted Emerson 32″ LCD TV that was being used by Target (s TGT) and Wal-mart (s WMT) to get consumers into their stores. Both priced the TV below $250 (Target at $246, Wal-mart at $248), and both had “limited supplies.”

I should note that this was my first time pursuing “unbeatable prices” at a big-box store while so many other people were still sound asleep. Even though I knew the chances of acquiring one of these underpriced TVs was actually pretty low, I still woke up in the middle of the night and ventured out shopping.

I went to Wal-mart first, arriving around 4:00 a.m. EST, only to be find that there was no actual “door busting” going on. In order to make things more orderly by keeping Thanksgiving hours in most of its stores, queuing customers up and selling off heavily discounted items one by one. All of which meant that I arrived to find the store’s doors wide open, the aisles of the electronics section packed, and the cache of TVs sold off a full hour before the sale officially began.

Next I headed to the local Target, where the doors had not yet opened. So I got in line with what felt like 1,000 other shoppers and slowly made my way inside, only to find the aisles gridlocked with the store’s signature red carts. No one seemed to know where the discounted TVs were, and by the time I found them — in some random aisle in the middle of the store — the stash had been picked clean, with only a piece of signage lying around to signal that there had once been an “unbelievable deal” in that spot.

So what have I learned? First, that my time is better spent shopping online, where one can actually make a sound, reasoned purchase decision while still finding discounts. Within an hour of arriving home, I found decent deals on other TVs from brand-name CE manufacturers, including a 32″ Vizio LCD TV at Sam’s Club for $338 with free shipping (club membership required) and a 32″ Toshiba LCD TV at Amazon.com for $319.99 ($344.68 with shipping and handling). While neither approaches the $250 price point offered in-store at the big-box retailers, both are a significant value over other comparable products on sale.

I also learned that door-buster deals are for suckers. Considering the slim chance of obtaining one of a limited supply of a certain product, the amount of time, frustration and energy spent jostling with other shoppers is just not worth it — which is why next year I’ll be sleeping in.

After purchasing the Mac mini (at a discount through Amazon.com), I connected it to my Panasonic HDTV.

After that surprisingly easy (once you know how) operation my Mac mini media center goals were as follows…

• Gaze upon movies & TV shows through Netflix’s “watch instantly” service.
• Watch movies & TV shows via Hulu.com – they have a large collection of (unedited) TV shows with just a few commercials.
• Observe the videos that I captured with my awesome Flip MinoHD Camcorder.
• Contemplate Antiques Roadshow, History Detectives, and Masterpiece theater through PBS.
• Gape at the movies I downloaded from the Apple iTunes store (both rentals and purchases).
• Take a good look at the music videos that I downloaded from iTunes.
• Behold the DVDs that I “ripped” (via the free and easy to use Handbrake program) into my Mac’s movies folder.
• Search for / browse and then stare at HD videos through YouTube (it’s not all junk), Vimeo, Google Videos and others.
• Play DVDs from Netflix, my local video store, and my friendly neighborhood public library.
• Listen to podcasts (with the iTunes visualizer playing on the HDTV screen).
• Hear my favorite classical music stations such as WGBH Boston.
• Broaden my horizons through iTunes University.
• Lend an ear to the songs, Tibetan chants & gongs, nature sounds, white noise loops, etc. from my music library (again with the iTunes visualizer enthralling my cats).
• Take heed of my favorite radio programs (“Piano Jazz” and “This American life”) through WUSF in Tampa.

And finally(!), I’d like the option of being able to watch actual factual broadcast television (such as a live sporting event).

The ongoing work with opto-electronic contact lenses taking place at the University of Washington in Seattle. The lab there has been showing off the latest prototype, a tiny computer including an LED embedded into a contact lens that receives 330 microwatts of power wirelessly from a nearby RF transmitter. Dr. Babak Parviz has been using the prototypes to display biosensor feedback about the wearer’s vital signs. The wireless power is picked up by a loop antenna built into the lens, and future iterations of the hardware are expected to integrate the transmitter into a cellphone.

Conventional contact lenses are polymers formed in specific shapes to correct faulty vision. Parviz turned  a lens into a functional system, integrated control circuits, communication circuits, and miniature antennas into the lens using custom-built optoelectronic components. Those components will eventually include hundreds of LEDs, which will form images in front of the eye, such as words, charts, and photographs. Much of the hardware is semitransparent so that wearers can navigate their around their surroundings. Future plans see the opto-electronic lenses being used for more than just displaying data; they’ll also be able to monitor the eye’s surface chemistry, which would allow wearable computers to keep track on blood sugar levels in diabetics and other information.  Parviz’s eventual goal is the contact lens becoming a platform “like the iPhone is today”, with developers creating custom apps.

They have great blacks, so bad contrast is not a problem. If you pick up an LED-backlit model, they are better on color accuracy and have a longer life span then a light-bulb-based DLP.

Now don’t get me wrong, these TVs are not perfect. The biggest thing to think about when buying a DLP is placement. With DLP the viewing angle must be spot on. If you are sitting directly in front of the TV, the picture can’t be beat. If you are sitting in your favorite recliner off to the side or your kids are sitting on the floor you won’t be able to see anything. So if you buy a DLP you need to think about where it is going to be placed.

Furthermore DLP TVs can be lighter then a plasmas or LCDs, they are bulkier and will not work with wall mounts. So mounting a DLP on your wall is out of the question.

An LED-backlit LCD can give you almost Plasma like picture but are way over priced.

Here’s the thing when it comes to 720p or 1080p. Picking between the two all depends on how big the HDTV is, and how far away you plan on sitting. If you are going to buy an HDTV 40 inches or under, you most likely can’t tell the difference. Anything bigger then 40 inches you have to be thinking of how far away you will be viewing your TV. If you picked up a 42” 1080p you should be sitting six feet away for the HDTV, seven feet for a 50” 1080p set. If you plan on having the HDTV further away then that I would think about picking up a 720p HDTV at a cheaper price.

Now that you have you an HDTV picked out; there are a couple more things to take into consideration. HDMI cables are a must! An HDMI cable brings that high definition signal to your Satellite TV and can greatly cut down the amount of wires you have tucked away behind your TV.

If the studs do hold then the only concern is finding a place to hide all the wires hanging from the TV. I recommend the stand; it’s safer and easer.
