La cita era de asistencia obligatoria; No todos los días tienes la oportunidad de presenciar, en Valencia, una velada tan sumamente metalera, compuesta por un grupo de Melodeath (según su cartel, ya me explicaré luego…) y otro Doom Death Metal auténtico.

Empezaron pronto los Dawn of Tears, banda que auguraba buenos headbangs tras haber escuchado varios cortes en su myspace, pues si bien sonaban crudos y directos, se olía que en vivo iban a ser mucho mejores. Mi sorpresa fue mediana al ver que cuando empezaron a descargar, una banda que bebe tanto de ritmos muy rápidos de batería, blasts y demás no tuviera un batería que aguantase el ritmo. No se escuchaba el doble bombo, cosa que mermó muchísimo la potencia de su sonido. Su música además, presumiendo de ser Death Metal Melódico por momentos sonaban como riffs de Power Metal acelerado, pero con la voz rota de su cantante, unos aspirantes a Children of Bodom si me apuras, pero más encaminados al Death en ocasiones. Tocaron un set muy compacto en el que su Cantante se acercó muchó al publico y lo animó a dejarse llevar en más de una ocasión, consiguiéndolo. Si bien hay que destacar algo en el directo de esta joven banda es la precisión y técnica con la que ejecutaron los guitarristas las canciones, no erraron ni una sola vez, éso sí, es cochante ver a un guitarra rítmico que por momentos se come al solista, de no ser porque la distorsión de su guitarra es más grave, amén de que el citado hacha solista se mantuvo estático como un maniquí y con cara de no estar allí en cuerpo. No obstante fueron una perfecta introducción para Evadne, su sonido estuvo bastante equilibrado, sin altibajos ni picos y su ejecución de las canciones (que sonaron mucho más potentes que en estudio) fue casi perfecta, si nos olvidamos de la batería. Su última canción montó una auténtica tormenta. Habrá que seguirles la pista…

Una vez terminado el show de los Tears las luces se atenuan y los miembros de Evadne empiezan a aparecer de entre las sombras, preparando el set, el cual es pequeño y se nota, pues a duras penas cabe todo lo que un grupo tan completo como Evadne necesita para tocar (recordemos, son cantante, 2 hachas, bajo, teclados y batería).

Minutos más tarde tras el montaje de la batería y posicionamiento de Evadne sobre el escenario suena su intro inyectándose cual dulce veneno en nuestras venas. El set list (claramente a mi vista a pié del escenario) elegido para hoy incluía un 80% de material del que va a ser su nuevo disco, que grabarán a partir de Enero, por lo que se esperaban sorpresas nuevas, ya que es material escrito tras la incorporación de su magnífico batería, Ifrit.

Empiezan a sonar los primeros acordes y fuimos testigos de lo que una banda jóven, con buenas ideas y buena actitud puede hacer cuando hablamos de Doom Metal. Hay que tener muchos cojones (algo parecido como con Noctem) para tocar un estilo tan (injustamente) poco aceptado como es el Doom en un terreno tan resbaladizo como lo es Valencia. Las guitarras sonaron pesadas, épicas, abrumadoras… Transmiteron melancolía y desesperación cuando uno las escuchaba. Su nuevo material sigue siendo Doom auténtico, pero se ha ido refinando con el tiempo, madurando del material primerizo Metal cuasi Gótico con voces guturales que practicaban en sus incios, hasta el Doom Death Melódico que presentaron en su primer álbum, The 13th Condition. El material mostrado esta noche muestra unos Evadne más elaborados, complejos y aplastantes (aunque algunas veces suenen ritmicamente muy similares en sus nuevas composiciones).

Las guitarras de Josan y Marc regaban una sala, que todo sea dicho, no supo muy bien como reaccionar ante las épicas melodías que nos regalaron. Hoy día parece que si no sales a destrozar tu guitarra una vez acabado el show, si no machacas el doble bombo sin piedad, no dejas de moverte como si estuvieses loco, con las guitarras por las rodillas y sonando altísimo y lo más brutamente posible no estás transmitiendo nada. El Doom metal no funciona así, ni Evadne tampoco. Ellos salen al escenario, se colocan y evocan las sensaciones y sentimientos más profundos desde la quietud, calma y locura al mismo tiempo cuando el momento lo requiere. Albert es un frontman al que se le nota que pone su alma en la actuación, sintiendo, no meramente interpretando las letras que canta.

El sonido estuvo bastante compensado, todos los músicos pudieron mostrar sus aptitudes y sonaron atronadores. Es impresionante escuchar la voz gutural de Albert, tiene un gran talento como Growler, si bien en las partes limpias se le notó muy comedido. Al bajista Jose poco lo pudimos ver a duras penas por el reducido espacio que tenían para moverse los miembros del grupo, quedando en segundo plano de Albert, si bien su ejecución fue limpia y contundente. Su teclista, relegado a segundo plano detrás de la pantalla de Marc, no pudo lucirse mucho de nuevo a la acústica de la sala, aunque sus melodías eran audibles en su gran mayoría. Por último, el batería Ifrit machacó su kit con fuerza, pasión y un gran talento. Su ejecución fue impecable, sus ritmos demoledores y su técnica envidiable. Es impresionante ver el sentimiento que le pone. Quitando un par de descoordinaciones a la hora de cambiar entre patch de pedalera no nos pudimos quejar de nada los allí presentes.

Uno de los momentos más mágicos de la noche fueron sin duda cuando los primeros arpegios de Awaiting (de su 13th Condition) sonaron, poniendo los pelos de punta a los que ya estamos iniciados en su material, así como la recta final del show, con Gloomy Garden, una canción impresionante que me llevó al delirio y para finalizar, I will place them, rescatada de su 13th Condition, sonando impecable.

Sin duda, el nuevo adelanto del material ha sido una grata sorpresa, ya que se augura un futuro album muy prometedor con excelentes composiciones, con una banda dispuesta a llevarse la corona de la escena Doom española. Pasión, desesperación, tristeza, fuerza, hieratismo, belleza… Sentimientos e imágenes unidos en un solo ente, que son Evadne. Sencillamente excelentes.

Apparently there IS music being played (“Decade of Therion” from Behemoth), even though we can’t hear it.  Either way, this just proves how silly some of us metal heads can be.

Jag besökte Madonnans AB-blogg och såg en introduktionsvideo i ett av hennes senare inlägg om en företeelse som kallas BrainWave Vibrations. Det tycks handla om att ruska sitt huvud, så att hjärnans hjärnvågor förändras och man släpper taget om oro, stress och negativitet. Därmed slappnar ens kropp  av bättre och man uppnår ett jämnare, mer harmoniskt sinnestillstånd. Och så värst mycket enklare än så här, kan det väl inte bli att se om sin hälsa…?
Vem vet…. Kanske fanns/finns det en nyttig aspekt av headbanging, ändå…?

HeadBanging At Home.

I mentioned a while back that I’d intended a post on these boys. It had kind of slipped to the back burner though.

I’ve seen them live twice, once with Ted Nugent and the second with UFO opening for them. UFO, of course, featured Michael Schenker, brother of The Scorpions’ Rudolph Schenker, on lead guitar. If I remember correctly, Michael spent some time with The Scorpions as well.

I have a young friend in the business(he runs the sound board at most concerts in the area) and he called one day asking if he could bring a friend of his by so that I could set him straight. The Scorpions had just begun to have some commercial success with their Lovedrive album and his friend insisted that was their first record.

This was the days when vinyl was still predominant and I proceeded to show him the five or six earlier records I had(I didn’t have all of their previous releases myself). Ah, the young. They figure everything begins with them. I’m quite sure I was just as bad myself.

Waow, sekilas di depan gw terpampang sebentuk mahluk keren. Modal Jaket kulit dan sepatu bot mantaph. Suara kerincingan rantai dompet menggema jalan. Kacamata hitam menutup mata yang aslinya mungkin tak sekeren kacamatanya. Ga sengaja dia noleh ke arah gw. Dia mendekat, tiba – tiba gw takut. Perasaan gw ga enak. Pengen lari tapi dibelakang tembok. Pengen tereak – tereak tapi takut disangka gila. Gw mesti ngapaen? Satu – satunya cara gw harus hadapin orang itu. Benar! Begitu dia mendekat, gw akan tereak “Bencooong! Dibelakang Loe!!!”. Yah, ide bagus! Dia mendekat! 2meter! 1,5 meter! 1meter! 3,1/4 phi X diameter lingkaran sama dengan 2700 rupiah!

“Tap!” dia berhenti. Kita terpaku. Jantung gw berdetak kaya suara mesin perata jalan. Kerongkongan mengering. Wajah berkeringat. Kaki gemetaran. Lidah pun melet – melet. Taktik “bencong dibelakang” harus gw keluarkan sekarang.  Gw ga tahu dia ini orang apa. Mungkin aja dia agen pemerintah yang maw memperkosa mahluk – mahluk kaya gw atau alien yang datang ke bumi buat ngambil otak gw untuk riset skripsi S1 di planetnya (ngomong – ngomong alien takut ama bencong kagak yah?). Kita terpaku kaya rose dan jack pertama kali ketemu di dek kapal TITANIC. Penuh hasrat dan birahi. Pelan – pelan dia buka kacamatanya…. Dan…. “Bleguk?”

“Hehehe, keren ga dandanan gw?” suara jakun mahluk setengah jerapah ini membahana. “Gila! Gw kira syapa…!” sambil ngelus – ngelus dada rata gw yang sesexy korban busung lapar afrika. Setelah tenang akan kejadian yang nimpa gw malam ini, gw tanya bleguk ngapaen dia berdandan kaya arnold Schwazenenger  gitu. “METAL! Gw Mau nonton konser neh!” sambil ngacungin salam khas tiga jari ke muka gw. “Loe bisa nonton konser metal? Gw kira jiwa loe di keroncong aja” hehehe… “Sial! Sekali – sekali ngikutin jaman boleh donk! Eh, baju loe udah item…. Loe ikutan aja yokz? Gw yang bayarin deh”

Akhirnya setelah diiming – imingi tiket gratis dan tampilan konser yang asik, gw ngikut juga. Berhubung gw suka musik, gw okeh – okeh aja ngikutin segala genre musik. Kalo Metal? Bole Juga!!!

If I told you I was freaking out, you wouldn’t believe me.
I don’t think I would believe myself, either. I don’t FEEL like I’m freaking out, but I know I’m kinda…tense, that’s for sure.

I just hope there aren’t any mishaps.

Not only is this the airport thing, but Brian’s here and he’s my mom’s boyfriend. He’s okay. Okay, I lie. I don’t like him much, honestly. I dunno. And they never do anything but sit around and watch TV or movies. HOW is that entertaining enough to warrant driving an hour and a half?
I have NO idea.

Especially as an adult. As a kid, as a Jessica, sometimes, you gotta be a lazy SOB. But, I dunno, just I don’t see it.

So, because of this, my house is highjacked. As in I have to be warry when going out of my bedroom, and my mom is no longer mine.

But whatever.

I’m going away for two weeks, remember? Yeah. I’m hoping that it will be good. I don’t see why it wouldn’t – not like it could be any boringer than anything I’ve ever done before.
It’ll probably be like being at my Aunt’s, only less busy. And I’m not saying I don’t like my Aunt’s, because I like it. Just, the same kind of thing – being there and then doing whatever and then eventually coming home, y’know?

Sometimes, I just want to leave. Be like fuck this, and leave.
I don’t know where I’d go, but this living at home thing…I’m not getting anywhere.
And I’m not GOING to get anywhere so long as I stay here. It’s like…just not gonna happen that way – getting anywhere while living here.
I want to go and I want to live and I want to be…away.

I don’t know.
Just, get out, find people, and BE.
And not here.

I love my mom and all, but sometimes…I just wanna rip her throat out. Ja. Like how she drives and texts at the same time. OH that pisses me off. Because she’s not very good at it. And swerves everywhere. And how she is all on her own timeframe. I understand that happens when you’re a human being, but you also have to understand that the world doesn’t stop for you. I think mom’s kinda forgotten that.
It’s nice, though, having mom be on her own, not having to be with dad and all, dealing wtih what dad would say blahblahblah. Like, not like he was repressive or anything (he was a bit, but every marriage-thing is, you know?), but now it’s mom’s rules and hers alone.

And Cody hasn’t texted me since yesterday morning.
I texted him earlier, told him I’d talk to him sometime later, whenever.

Sometimes, I have to fight the urge to text him and be like “I love you.” I have that problem a lot lately. The whole wanting-to-tell-people-I-love-them.
Happens for some people oftener than others, though, and Cody’s at the top of the list.
I really do like him, you know. Haven’t you noticed?

I feel like going mental. Like, headbanging mental like.
Marilyn Manson’s a good sountrack for that, as well. “Target Audience” is an AWESOME song.
Sometimes, you just gotta rock out, you know? Get it out of your system, before it gets any worse. Like…before explosions happen.

The past few days, I haven’t wanted to make anything of myself. It’s kind of depressing. Just…wanted to be a lazy bum. I know I don’t mean it. Then again, I might mean it.
I’m not sure which one I mean. Do I wanna be this “successful person” or this lazy bum? I don’t really know.
It’s kinda fifty/fifty.
It’s also very frustrating. People could be like “oh what do you wanna do when you grow up” and my honest to god fucking answer is “I HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE, STOP ASKIN’ ME DAMMIT!!!”

Nobody’s asked me that in a while, though, so that’s nice.
Well, other than the IM thing the other day, but that’s different I guess.
But still, nobody’s askin’ me. I sure hope they don’t start that up again. Because it’s hella frustrating. Because there’s no answer for ‘em.

I wanna stay home and listen to music and get high.
NO, get a hippy van, then take it out in the desert, like in “Breaking Bad”  (TV show about a meth dealer – basically, anyway. Like “Weeds”, but that’s about pot). So get the hippy van, and go out in the desert, and just listen to music and take acid.
Then, become famous for the next “Alice in Wonderland.”
EPIC. You’ve gotta admit, that’s a good story.
I think it is.

Of course, though, it has to be acid. Or LSD. But that is acid. Or meth. Meth’d be fun, but it’s highly addicting and does that shit to your face (nastly lesionythings, they’re gross). Or cociane. I hear that’s good, too. Or shrooms, though that’s acid.
But something like that, anyway.

Gosh I’m glad I thought of this.

Y bueno, una vez más, después de una noche de headbanging, dolor de cuello post-concierto, birra y mucho metal toca la consiguiente review.

Empezamos con Far’n'Hate. He de decir que la primera impresión que me causó el grupo desde su myspace no fue muy alentadora. Metalcore con toques “industriales” (por llamar de alguna manera la inclusión de samplers y efectos) y voz que juguetea con el screamo, el death y la melodía cual Hev Arriols en su época Coilbox.

Se sabe que el Metalcore vive ya una época de saturación por la cantidad de bandas copiando la misma fórmula una y otra vez hasta la saciedad, haciendo que todo suene a lo mismo. Pero bueno, dejando a parte su estilo, una cosa está clara; Far’n'Hate son carne de directo. Si su música en myspace me dejó indiferente su actuación fue muy lograda. Un cantante que tiene presencia, entona bien y echa atrás con sus growls. Un batería pletórico, que machacó el drumkit de Noctem ya preparado con sutileza y mucha mala ostia. Los 2 guitarras hicieron un buen trabajo, no estando estáticos sobre el escenario y moviéndose lo poco que podían, ya que no es un escenario excesivamente grande.

En definitiva, un show bueno, tuvieron a gran parte del público como locos, sus canciones sonaron agresivas, brutales y mucho mejores que en estudio y dejaron listón alto… Para que llegara Noctem.

Tras una pausa empiezan a aparecer caras conocidas. Se prepara el stage. La gente hierve de impaciencia y es cuando salta al escenario Beleth, apoderándose de la atención sala entera.

Si en la review que hice de mi primera experiencia con ellos ya constaté que son una banda que apunta muy alto, lo que hemos visto esta noche no deja lugar a dudas; Noctem se está convirtiendo por méritos propios en un referente del Black/Death Metal español. Un detalle que me ha hecho mucha gracia es que en mi crítica anterior constaté que su actuación estuvo plagada de automutilaciones, sangre, salvajismo, que dá su toque brutal y personal del grupo, pero que como todo, en demasía, acaba cargando, pues no, ahora todo está en su justa medida. Ni demasiado poco ni demasiado mucho; Genial en ese aspecto.

Pasando a lo puramente musical se podría usar una palabra para resumir el show; Atronador. Fue subir al escenario, empezar a tocar y si la gente ya hizo el cafre en el pit en la actuación de Far’n'Hate, la entrada de Noctem fue tan brutal que dejó a medio local como miedoso de echarse a headbangear como posesos, hipnotizados ante semejante potencia. Al no tener el CD (todavía) no puedo ser objetivo en si hubo fallos o no, pero su sonido fue cohesionado, altísimo y muy intimidante. El set list, muy compacto fue dejando los temas que todo el mundo conoce por su myspace para el final. Como siempre, cada tema era más duro que el anterior, The Sanctuary montó una tormenta arrolladora, la gente ya estaba con la miel en los labios y en el mejor momento llegó Under the seas of silence. Decir que la demencia colectiva que se generó fue apoteósica es poco. Ni un solo fallo. Sonando a gloria y dejando al público con ganas de más, fue el momento de la noche. Tras la pausa de rigor volvieron a la carga con el último corte de la velada, llevando a la locura una vez mas a toda la sala y con ésto terminaron un set difícilmente olvidable.

Noctem ha dejado claro que no son un grupo a tomarse en broma, que apuntan alto y no van con tonterías. Mejorando (para servidor) detalles antíguos, con una presentación inmejorable, escenogafía bien montada y un sonido demoledor se han convertido en una razón de peso para patearse el estado entero a verlos y comprar su CD, Divinity que visto lo visto no va defraudar a nadie.

IY ahora a seguir así. Si vienen cerca de donde esteis y amáis el Metal en su vertiente más oscura, rápida y dura ni lo dudéis, Noctem seguirá girando en el campo de batalla demostrando que si están donde están, y siguen creciendo como lo están haciendo es por algo. Estad atentos!

I saw these boys in concert with Judas Priest at Norfolk. They were just starting to break big here in America and it was just before they fired lead singer Paul Di’Anno for drug abuse which was beginning to affect his performances. So, though I enjoyed the show, I missed out on Bruce Dickinson with which they had their biggest success.

Here’s a couple of my favorites.

Siguiendo la línea errática que anticipé cuando abrí este web site (ver), he querido referirme en esta ocasión a un aspecto que forma parte importantísima de la vida de cualquier ser humano: la música… si, leyeron bien, la bendita, la sacra música.

 Creo que no hay nadie en el mundo que -en mayor o menor grado- no se deleite con ella. Puede ser cualquier estilo, desde escuchar un Concierto de Rachmaninoff hasta cumbia villera. No hay límites en lo que se refiere al mundo musical, pues es tan humano, lo cuallo hace ser variable e ilimitado como sus creadores. En mi caso, debo confesar que soy rockero (nótese el nuevo diseño de la web, pura inspiración metalera). La música pesada -y la no tanta también- me ha acompañado a lo largo de mi existencia, dándole tintes distintos a las diversas etapas de mi vida. En realidad, vamos de la mano. Yo recuerdo las vivencias y los años en base a lo que estaba escuchando en aquel entonces. Pienso que eso grafica mucho cómo voy definiendo mi camino, por lo cual creo que nada me ha marcado tan profundamente.

Contarles acerca de cada uno de mis gustos o analizarlos en cada una de sus facetas sería insulso y algo largo por lo que sólo me referiré a un disco en particular que, por estar fresco, recién salido del horno, es digno de recomendar para todos quienes encontramos placer en un headbangin’. El álbum en cuestión es “Crack in the Skye” de la banda norteamericana “Mastodon”.

Yo no sé donde estaba cuando escuché por primera vez las notas de “Oblivion”, el tema con el cual abre el disco, pero debo decir que no me impresionó mucho. Más, cuando puse atención a las composiciones, las texturas, los solos y las melodías alcanzadas, quedé impresionado. ¡Qué calidad! Pero eso era el comienzo.

Averiguando y escuchando material antiguo, pude notar que si había algo que caracterizaba a esta banda es su constante innovación. Sin miedo a los cambios y a la exploración, Mastodon es una banda que progresivamente va incorporando elementos nuevos a su música. En “Crack The Skye”  por ejemplo, se nota la influencia setentera, el sonido que otorgó el productor Brendan O’ Brien y que marca un paso adelante de lo que fue su anterior LP “Blood Mountain”. Marcas registradas de King Crimson o de Pink Floyd se dejan ver en temas como “The Czar” o “Ghost Of Karelia” pero depuradas en un estilo actual y único. Sin duda, en tiempos en que escasea la originalidad, es bueno escuchar algo como Mastodon que, sin ser estrafalarios, la encuentran volcándose a las raíces del rock.

Quienes siguen a Mastodon desde más tiempo, encuentran su conexión con el lado más metalero de la banda en temas como “Crack The Sky” o el progresivo, técnico y sorprendente “The Last Baron”. La opulencia y la simplicidad en las composiciones se van entrelazando incansablemente y de una manera que roza la perfección. Es poco lo que se puede escribir para alabar lo que el cuarteto consiguió musicalmente en su última entrega.

Pero hay otro aspecto de este álbum que llama mucho la atención: el concepto que se trata a lo largo de sus siete temas. “Crack the Skye” cuenta la historia de un niño parapléjico cuya única manera de ver el mundo exterior es desdoblándose. Al hacerlo, llega muy cerca del Sol, el cual quema su cordón umbilical que lo unía al cuerpo. El niño comienza a vagar por el espacio hasta que llega al culto ruso (??) en donde debe salvar a Rasputín, el monje loco asesinado en la Rusia Zarista. En fin, en mancomunión con él se debe enfrentar a Satanás, llegando a un final igual de exéntrico que toda esta secuela. Si, es loca, pero está muy bien contada en cada uno de los temas. Es otro factor que hace de este disco algo único.

La tarea de escuchar y analizar tema por tema se la dejaré para quien quiera obtener el disco o bien, alguien que ya lo haya escuchado puede postear su impresión. Lo único que les ”ordeno” es que lo escuchen ya, pues quien tiene oídos rockeros no debe privarse de la que será -casi sin duda alguna- la obra maestra del metal en este flojo año 2009.

After the bloodiest and most divisive war in American history, Commander in Chief John A. It seems that this holiday was put together so that there was a day off for people to reflect on the lost in battle and to gather themselves after the stress of spring and prepare for the summer days. 

I don’t know who we’re kidding. Celebrations of anything that has happened over 25 years before ones life and don’t involve some sort of mandatory gift giving, are easily forgotten. At this point, Memorial Day is basically is the kick off of summer.

Bring your daughters to the slaughter! Metal is a genre which you either get or you don’t. There is no middle ground, no ambiguity as it’s (well good metal at least) such a kick in the balls that you kind of have to have an opinion about it. Those who love it will talk your head off in extolling the virtues of a genre that to this day in spite of it’s sometimes commercial success (this does not include Nickleback, they are not metal)is still a genre that will always be misunderstood, mislabeled or just plain written off as a phase in the listeners life from which they will eventually emerge and move on. As someone who has been listening to the ‘devil’s music’ for 11 years also known as half my life I think I can safely say that I will forever be in love with this music, in fact it might turn out to be my longest lasting relationship…ever.

This brings me to the issue at hand, my role within the metal landscape, or more broadly put, the place that females have in a stereotypically male driven music genre. You start throwing around the term ‘heavy metal’ and the images most people find popping into their head is that of wild men, loud guitars and often misogynistic lyrics. Now for all it’s male posturing and the hair sprayed decadence of the 80’s ‘Hair Metal’ this isn’t too surprising. In the last few years two documentaries by anthropologist and metal head for life Sam Dunn have helped to shed some light on this often misunderstood, oft maligned genre. Metal: A Headbangers Journey as well as Global Metal took great steps in laying out the history of the music as well as giving a refreshing look at the average Metal fan. From an anthropological point of view the film maker did a great job in bringing his message across. Showing metal fans to not be as often stereotyped, ‘ two IQ points away from being milked’ or as satan worshippers, layabouts, whatever . It illustrated the diverse backgrounds these fans come from, from Baghdad to Tokyo, an interesting take on how globalization has affected the different styles of metal as well as the meanings behind it.

One thing disappointed me though and that was the obvious male perspective and complete lack of female opinion on this genre. I have been listening to heavy metal for ages and I can assure you that there are definitely more than just a few metal dames out there. The sad thing is that there seems to be an idea floating about that the only girl going to metal shows are girls who date metal fans, groupies or girls wanting to pick up a leather clad, tattooed and pierced bad boy. Though the last option is definitely a perk it is in no way the only reason a girl should be going to a metal concert. Once you get passed the ‘oooh girl at a metal show’ phase people somehow always expect you to look like a ‘Rock of Love’ show reject. the real irony is that these perceptions aren’t only prevalent outside heavy metal but it is sometimes the very same male metal fans who shout along with bands such as Sepultura about not ‘conforming and being true to the inner self’ who snidely remark that we can’t possibly rock out as hard as they do, to them I say “Bah humbug”, I have the scars and x-rays to prove that I can bang my head to the same double bass drum kit thank you very much.

I just feel that sometimes girls are overlooked or written off as groupies automatically. The amount of times i have been told I must only like this band or that because the guitarist is ‘like totally dreamy’ is ridiculous. As mentioned earlier I have pretty much been listening to heavy metal in one form or the other since I was 11, a chance encounter with an older family friends “Master of Puppets” vinyl opened me up to something so radically different to anything else I had ever experienced (just the day before I was contemplating buying Spice Girl platform shoes), but from the moment that first riff ripped through me and the first time I heard James Hetfields maniacal laugh…well I was hooked. The music burrowed itself so deep inside me that i don’t think I could ever get it out,even if I wanted to. At first I didn’t really ‘understand’ what Metallica was singing about but I knew that this was something that, forgive the cliche, would change my life. i became absolutely obsessed with getting my hands on more metal, I still have my metal mixtapes with hand drawn artwork given to me by my friend, it is something to be treasured, the seed that started it all you know? From there on out my template genre would always be metal. I don’t have a preference, if it’s good i will like it. I always have quite a physical reaction when listening to a band I haven’t heard of before and liking it. When I first listened to Lamb of God a few years ago it really felt as if I got hit by a jackhammer, it’s just that intense, same goes for bands such as In Flames or DevilDriver, their not easy genres to get into, especially so-called ’screamcore metal’ where its sometimes hard to decipher the lyrics but trust me, once you get into it…you’ll know, trust me, you’ll know the feeling; it’s not really something I can put into words.

As is want with any sub genre metal girls have their stereotypes, it’s always assumed that we must all be tom boys with pale faces, numerous dogcollars and sullen as all hell and usually, not that pretty either. Though I am sure there are probably girls like that I also know of girls that when you look at them you won’t be able to tell that they are into metal, besides making assumptions about people just because of the clothes they choose to wear? Silly.Just ask anyone wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt, some of them won’t even know who he was, unless you count the answer “he is a fashion label…duhhh.” True anecdote by the way.

I can feel just as at ease wearing a cocktail dress as I can wearing my favorite metal T-shirts. Sometimes I want to dress up and other times…not so much. But then again,no girl no matter to what kind of music she listens to is any different in that respect I think. Neither do I tend to confine myself to just one genre, yes,Metal will always be numero uno with me, it doesn’t mean I don’t listen to other types of music, jazz, blues,rock,indie a little bit of electro here and there…it doesn’t make me any less metal. I pretty much live by the rule of, if its good I will listen to it. End of story.

Look, no doubt the metal scene is pre-dominantly a male dominated genre, both onstage and off, but for female metal fans…that is not a deterrent. It is actually kind of nice to know that though my demographic isn’t that huge it sure is dedicated. Some of the most intense metal fans I know are girls and they can out bang and outlast most of the guys I know. Not that it’s a competition or anything. I really wanted to show what it’s like to be a girl in a male playpen but i seemed to have digressed for the most part and instead just ended up saying what it’s like being a metal fan. Male or female, it’s a passion that if you are lucky, will stay with you forever.

I don’t want to convert anyone to metal music, but I do want people to give it a chance and to not write it off as noise. To see that the boys (and girls) who listen to it are not always sullen, dim headed, beer chugging lunatics who spend too much time looking at the ground. There is an intelligence in the music as well, Mastodon recently recorded a whole album based on Moby Dick, Lamb of God sing about dystopian world orders, hypocrisy and the greed of people who are supposed to be looking out for our best interest. Musically and lyrically metal music is as complex a genre as I have ever come across, for the most part the musicians don’t dumb down their music just for a catchy hook or some airplay on the local radio station. We all have our share of idiots but overall, most of the fans I know are smart, functioning members of society whose eyes won’t glaze over when you talk about something not metal related.

At the end of the day metal will always be a constant in my life, a freedom of expression I cannot find anywhere else. Being in a pit, which to an outsider looks aggressive and barbaric, it’s really not I assure you, if you fall you can be sure there will be someone to pick you up. When the leadsinger is standing above you,veins popping,eyes shut and fist clenched…that’s beauty in it’s purest form. Whether its at a massive thousand man strong crowd or whether it is supporting a band just starting out that pulls a crowd of not even a hundred…you are for that time part of the same creature. It’s a feeling you wont find anywhere else I can promise you that. I remember the first time i saw Metallica live when I was 19, I think I might have shed a tear or two, it’s just,you get filled with so much emotion until with a pick of a chord your feelings just burst open for everyone to see. There is a raw honesty in this music and screaming along with and headbanging with the band is akin to an emotional exorcism almost. It is the closest I will ever come to having a religious experience methinks.
