Just bought myself a new phone a few days back, a Samsung Star S5233S model to be precise, and I must say, not blowing my own horn or anything, that it is indeed an excellent device. Can’t still keep my hands away from it, am still discovering new ways to tinker and play with it. “Msging” is a breeze, voice quality is amazing and watching videos on the 16:9 crisp screen is excellent. Let me remind you guys here, this thing ain’t the i-pod video, or the i-phone for that matter, so don’t go expecting miracles in the media playback department, but this thing sure kicks some good freaking ass on its own!! Given that you know your way around the video-encoding neighborhood, and you have some free time, you’re gonna have hell lot of good quality stuff to make that quick break at office and the BIG BUNK between college and home a little more interesting. If you don’t, fear not, I’ll post some how-to stuff a bit later. My only crib here would be the insanely useless pair of headphones that the phone ships with. What were they thinking?? Unless a humongous chunk of their clientele are Giants and Trolls, I think they’d be hard-pressed to find actual living human beings who can fit those HUGE ( and I mean HUGE in the Biblical sense) earplugs into their ear-holes. And let’s not get started about that miseable, miserable feeling you get when you follow the head-phone wire to the bitter end and find out that the connector is not the ordinary, common man jack, it’s a proprietary funny looking connector which seems to laugh and mock at you over some cosmic joke you just missed every time you look at it!! Don’t know about you, but I always have this gut-feeling that the punchline somehow involves us… Anyways, long story short, all you gotta do is find an adapter, or easier still, another pair of headphones with the same connector, but the kind which has another connector in between for the regular 3.5 mm jacks. Those things are God’s gifts for audiophiles everywhere!! For those who have the Star, or any other similar phone of Samsung make and model, you don’t have to look further than the Samsung Corby, the headphones that ship with the model have 3.5 mm adapters, so you can trash the buds that came with it and connect your own into it. That being said, I still believe myself when I say that the Star is still an excellent phone, and wrap this up, because I’m running out of adjectives to describe it. Anyhow, watch this space for an in-depth user review, and DYI (Do-It-Yourself, for those who came in late) stuff to keep you interested (Haven’t actually enjoyed any music playback on the thing because of the ear-plug problem you see, and since I consider myself a audiophile snob and also because I paid an obscene amount of cold, hard cash for a pair of Creative noise isolators,  I’d rather wait for my Corby pair).

Note: For True believers of Nokia (I was one before I jumped ship and converted), things are sunnier for you. I believe the newer X-press music models have normal jacks, so you don’t have to worry when you buy one. And if it doesn’t, you still have an easy way out (Well, cheaper, if not easier). Look around your grey electronics market for cheap chinese made adapters, jacks that have 3.5 mm connectors. In Delhi, a good one will set you back by 30-pathetic bucks or so at the Palika Market. Look out for cheaters and posers who’ll tell  you that they only sell Nokia geniune stuff, and want a fat lot for the thing. Well, Nokia didn’t have the forethought to make nifty little trinkets like that, so take your business elsewhere!! Look around, check every shop that stocks the connector, try it out on your phone, see if it fits perfectly or if it’s loose, check the quality out, bargain a bit, haggle the price and see if you can get it cheaper than i did. Happy shopping!!

I sold my Woo Audio 6 and bought myself an early Christmas present, a Woo Audio 6 SE (Special Edition).

It features a separate power supply unit which uses 5AR4 or 5U4G rectifier tube and an amplifier unit which uses 6DE7 or 6EW7 dual triodes power/drive tubes. The amplifier unit has two chokes per channel and utilizes direct interstage coupling design, there is no coupling capacitor in the signal path.

My first impression was OMG… this thing screams power, a lot more powerful than my old Woo Audio 6. I’m still trying to get used to the sound of the amp, the amp is surprisingly incredibly neutral. I had a few chances to listen to a few high end solid state amps (AMB Beta 22, Gilmore Lite, and Audio-gd Phoenix ~ which I found has its own color and does not translate the sound of the source paired with the Phoenix), the WA6SE is easily my preferable amp.

The WA6SE is neutral and smooth. I guess it’s true about solid state being too analytical which is not my taste at all. One thing I really like about the WA6SE is it allows me to enjoy low volume listening with full impact and detail – something I haven’t been able to achieve with other amps I’ve tried.

I have 11 sets of power/drive tubes and 8 sets of rectifier tubes. Fat bottles 6EW7 power/drive tubes seem to have wider soundstage but they also have less impact if compared to 6DE7s which are somewhat more musical. As for the rectifier, I have the excellent Emission Labs 5U4G Mesh, this is one beautiful tube, especially when it’s on. I notice the sonic signature changes to the better side. The changes are minor, bass is a little deeper and controlled, everything seem to be well balanced. I don’t recommend those who own WA6SE or any OPT tube amps to buy more expensive rectifiers unless they want to because of the tubes looks, the changes are minor to warrant the price differences. There are two beautiful rectifier tubes, the Sophia Electric Princess 274B Mesh and the EML 5U4G/274B Mesh. The SP 274B Mesh is just as beautiful as the EML Mesh tube, it’s not a true mesh plate though.

Although the amp has performed flawlessly since day one, I’d like to change a couple of things; the rectification needs to work perfectly, sometimes the rectifier tube emits flash, I’m very concern about it as I don’t want the PSU unit to shorten the life of the rectifier tube. I have a few of very expensive rectifier tubes and I’m very worried if the recent “bad batch” of the Sophia Electric Princess 274B mesh is not really a bad batch but is caused by the design of the PSU unit. I want to use 6FD7 tubes as they are my favorite tubes, I was told I must not use them but Woo Audio does not specify a reason for it. There is a fix posted on head-fi.org for it. The fix is simple, you just have to swap two 470uF/100V capacitors in the amp unit with two 470uF/200V capacitors (I choose Panasonic TS-ED for this application). I will work on it once I have time to play with my soldering iron. I will also swap the bypass caps (220uF/16V) with Black Gate N-series 470uF/16V. Hopefully new caps will improve the SQ. In the future, I may add additional power filter caps to filter out hum that I can hear with my Sennheiser IE8 (IEM – In Ears Monitor). I want the amp to be silent with any phones plugged into it.

So, there you go, a superb headphone tube amplifier that does not cost arms and legs.

Another week before I can fully enjoy myself. With 3 important exams…maybe four if you think Moral is important, History, Accounts and Math, I will have to crack my head for seven more days.

Next month, my schedule will be brimming full with a day without the Net. I will be joining the Rakan Muda’s one and a half day camp in well…some where I don’t know. Two of my lovely friends will be joining me along with other Form 4 students. On the 15th as well, I will be going to Genting Highlands with my family and my cousin’s. It is a three days two nights trip. We went there every year so I don’t feel any excitement there but maybe my cousins joining me and my sister’s friends will change things a little more positive. And the feeling that I contributed RM400 to the trip and so, we will be enjoying better food is exhilarating. Sis will be treating suppers, I will be lunch, mom will be breakfast and dad will be dinner. I am thinking of asking sis to put in cappuccino into her menu.

[Ben] told us about his POV globe yesterday. We took a look and saw just one photo and the code with no real explanation of his project. He certainly set to work over night and now we see all the goodies we look for in a great build log. He even threw the Hackaday logo up for our enjoyment. His build is well executed and he found some creative ways around the common problems in these projects. We take a closer look after the break.

[Ben's] design looks much like an actual globe, with a base, a frame, and a rotating ring mounted with its axis tilted (just like the earth). 72 surface mount LEDs are used for the display, a PC fan with the blades removed provides the rotation, and a reed switch in conjunction with a magnet is used to sync the rotation with the display parsing.

Surface mount components are meant to be placed and reflowed on a circuit board. They are usually considered too small for free-form circuits. [Ben] made this process work for him by lining up all 72 LEDs face down on the sticky side of some masking tape. This made it much easier for him to solder together the multiplex needed to interface them with the microcontroller. You can see he is using varnished wire that can be soldered directly without the need for stripping. [Ben's] using a slice of a clear DVD-R container cover as the rotating ring for the display. On the right side of the picture above you can see the completed LED multiplex installed in this transparent ring.

Getting power to the rotating part of a POV display is always an issue to consider. [Ben] tried feeding the connection through a brush motor but had problems with power loss. His next attempt involves using a headphone jack and connector as the pivot point. Regulated power and ground are passed through two of the connections and he’s had great success with this system. Above, you can see the connector before it is fully inserted in the jack on the protoboard.

A reed switch is glued to the transparent ring and is actuated when it passes a bar magnet on the frame. This allows the microcontroller to measure the rotation of the ring, and sync the display output.

[Ben's] done a great job here. He salvaged a lot of the parts, including the LEDs. He’s chosen an Atmel AVR ATmega8 for the microcontroller. This is an inexpensive and readily available chip that is pin compatible with the more powerful ATmega168 so there is a possibility of future upgrade if animations or other functionality are desired, requiring more programming space. We would suggest a decoupling capacitor on the power pins of the uC in order to help filter out any noise on the lines, especially considering the rotating connection used to provide the regulated power.
