The future is so bright, I gotta wear shades! Wow, that was so…1986. Anyway, if you are reading this you have found that my blog has moved from Blogger to WordPress. Why? Who cares, it’s here now!
Actually, I plan on running some of this blog from a mobile device better known as, my phone. I will still be posting images like the above, but I will also be including other interesting things I run across. This IS a blog about my adventures in photography, so I will be sharing some of those adventures with you!

I have been loaded down with retouching from all over the map, quite literately! It’s been quite the ride. From book publications to fashion shows to personal pieces of artwork, it’s all over my screen. Not all at once of course, that would only be confusing. Thank you for all who read this blog and I hope to keep you around!

I was wanting to do a senior promo shoot to get my name out there so I ran it by Shelby Roller and we made it happen. In a days notice all of these girls were happy to come and help out! It was great to see Lisa again! We worked together for many years, but now we are both off doing other adventures. Lisa is chairing an upcoming event in March for the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Foundation and needed a new headshot. She didn’t want the typical boring studio shot so she called me. Yah! And on top of that she loved the graffiti shots I do and wanted one of those too. Fun! I knew I liked her!

She said something that I love to hear… “I usually hate getting my picture taken, but this was fun”, ahh, music to my ears…

You know how sometimes somebody will make an idle observation about a facet of your personality you never really noticed before, but once they do you get more and more self-conscious about it?  Yeah, that’s what happened to me when Angus made a passing remark about my sense of humour…

If someone injures themselves – genuinely gets hurt or risks getting hurt – you’ll be hard pushed to find someone more concerned than me.  It really distresses me.

Show me comedy violence and I find it hysterically funny.  I sat through the whole of Dead Like Me, thoroughly enjoying every minute, but it wasn’t till Roxy shot Mason in the foot that it actually got a laugh out of me.  Similar moments have occurred in most comedies I’ve watched.

Zombieland, of course, had me in stitches for most of the film, though the bit where the clown has his head bludgeoned with a mallet towards the end made me laugh so loudly I became uncomfortably aware nobody else found it quite so funny.

That’s fine.  Such moments were intended to be funny.  The trouble is I seem to have this reaction to other fictional portrayals of sudden, brutal violence.  My joyous discovery of the Infiltrator/cloaked/sniper combination in Mass Effect 2, for example.  Each zoomed in slow-mo headshot elicits another round of gleeful girlish giggling.  Never loses its appeal.  Seriously, what the hell is wrong with me?!

I’m a pacifist.  Absolutely abhor violence.  I don’t even do raised voices for goodness sakes!  Yet there I am cheerfully blasting the heads off monsters and laughing like a loon with each splattery explosion.  It’s really rather disturbing.

WHO? WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? WHY? HOW?!?!!?

This morning, inspired by a stack of headshots (that I have to go through to choose a likely candidate for an unlikely job) I did a quick riff on Twitter about some headshot poses that don’t inspire confidence.  These were my top four:

1. The *Gun* oh yeah baby, I want to hire you with that headshot.
2. The *Point* You talking to me? ‘Cuz your headshot is making me paranoid.
3. The *Crackberry* Will you look up from your texting marathon long enough for me to hire you?
4. The *Bridesmaid* Nice dress, but that tipsy grin scares me.

To add to the list:

5.  The *Pretty boy* why no, I don’t actually believe that a liberal dose of blush/hint of mascara (and please tell me that isn’t lipgloss) enhances your commercial appeal
6.  The *Bedroom eyes* You do have lovely shoulders and other parts best remaining hidden at work, is that supposed to make me want to give you the gig?
7.  The *Lookalike* Oh yes. I see it now.  All of your friends think that you look like Don Draper.  That doesn’t make you an advertising and marketing expert.

One supposes there’s a great punchline in all of this considering that I used a toon instead of a headshot for years, since I preferred to remain somewhat grounded in anonymity.  These days I generally use a combination of the two, toon when it’s less serious, headshot when I hope to inspire confidence or trust.

The thing is that while there are a few basic poses used in most professional headshots, the urge to set oneself apart from the crowd has inspired some people to veer way off course.

Having worked as a professional/celebrity makeup artist for years and in my current incarnation where I frequently consult on personal branding strategies for high worth individuals, celebrities, politicians and CEOs, I do have some ideas of what does work well in a headshot.

1. Tailor the shot to the hoped for position – it’s okay to look tough or beautiful if you’re hoping for a spot on a soap opera, less appropriate for the corporate world though.

2. Try to leave the props or pets at home – unless you’ve invented a new bit of technology or dog food, try to leave anything with bells and whistles out of your headshot.

3. Bring along several changes of clothing and accessories – if one outfit doesn’t work, the next might make you feel comfortable enough to offer up a genuine smile

4. Update frequently – I don’t mean whenever you get a new haircut, but follow the Match.com & Jdate rule- you never want people to be in for a rude awakening when they finally meet you in person.

5. Start over- if you hate it or feel that it doesn’t best represent you, it probably doesn’t.  As pricey as the prospect of reshooting a headshot is, in the age of the avatar and icon and online social everything, a picture really is worth a thousand words.

A former regular on the popular series “Boston Legal” Justin M. Mentell, 27, of Waukegan, Ill., was found north of Blanchardville, down a steep embankment off of Highway 39.

He played the attorney Garrett Wells during the 2005-’06 season of the show.

Justin was found lying near the wreckage of his crashed 2005 Jeep, and apparently  hit two trees on his way down. Unfortunetly he was not wearing a seatbelt.

It was a single vehicle car crash, and no one else was injured, and that there was “no sign” that alcohol or drugs were a reason in the crash. Routine toxicology reports won’t be available for six to eight weeks.

Police are saying that …”It looks like he had been there for several hours,” … “There are a lot of trees in that area, so if you were driving on 39, you wouldn’t be able to see the vehicle.

Mentell portrayed attorney Garrett Wells on “Boston Legal” from 2005 to 2006 as stated before,and then he moved in to feature films where he voiced the character Terrell in “G-Force” in 2009.

Model Bria Murphy arrives at the 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards held at Staples Center on January 31, 2010 in Los Angeles, California, and looks like a rising star!

For those of you who don’t know – I gave birth to my first son at home. Lucien was born with the help of Brynne and Deren of Mountainview Midwives. I am so glad that we decided to have him at home with the help of such loving and patient midwives.

The cozy couple attended legendary record executive Clive Davis Pre-Grammy party at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in luxurious Beverly Hills.

Everyone from Prince,Katy Perry,Lil Wayne,My girl Mya!!!, Alicia Keys,Keri Hilson, and Jennifer Hudson, just to name a few, came out to celebrate with Clive Davis, who is credited with discovering some of the music industry’s biggest stars for several decades.

The man discovered Whitney Houston,  Aretha Franklin, and Bruce Springsteen…enough said!!!

Our eyes were glued to Bria Murphy, as she is a favorite here on the Jerrybrice’s Blog…and of course, our girl Rhianna rocked it as well…

It has been announced that Floyd Mayweather has finally decided to stop dodging a beat down by Sugar Shane Mosley and give the Pomona fighter a shot at his jaw.

I guess he figures Shane is old enough now to step to, because all of us fight fans know that this fight should have happened at least 6 years ago when Shane was at his best, but Floyd was too busy being hyped up as he ran through many lesser opponents.

Pretty Boy had to come up with a legit fight after he ducked out the highly threatening Pac-man Pacquiao fight for whatever questionable reason?!?!…

…hopefully they can make that happen in the future.

Mosley will defend his welterweight title against Mayweather on May 1 on HBO PPV at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Mayweather’s signature is considered a formality…he is just reviewing footage of Shane Mosley’s recent bouts, questioning his decision not to dodge him anymore,and he sees that Sugar Shane Mosley, even in his old age, …is still a formidable threat to his Pretty Boy face.

This is not about money…no..this is about that chin!!!

Pretty soon, the groom -to- be in the photo above,may have to try having sex with that mannequin he’s looking at seductively, after his wife- to- be decides to cut him off…that’s what you call marital bliss…

If your bride to be told you she was going to stop having sex with you after a year or two of marriage, …would you still marry her?

Several of my married friends have told me that after a few years of marriage….their wives have refused to have sex with them!!!

Surprisingly, this seems to be a common occurence in marriages, which is a deal breaker for me.

I am always amazed that a friend of mine could calmly tell me such distressing information,but I understand that they may need to vent.I would be kind of agitated myself.

If there is no sex in the marriage…then why be married?…seems like a disaster waiting to happen to me.

I know that I could not do that, and given the fact that I hate to be a hypocrite and a liar,instead of abstaining from sex because of a marriage, I choose to abstain from the marriage.

Please tell me that this is not true, and point me to a woman who can guarantee me that I will never have to experience a marriage that is devoid of sex!

My question is this, is that the reason so many men and women seek sex from someone other than their marital partner?

Could this be what happened to Senator John Edwards and Tiger Woods!!!…if so then can you blame them?

In my book, no sex equals no marriage.

The AP is reporting that a legislator in Maryland may agree with me…

Montgomery County Del. Luiz Simmons, a Maryland lawmaker wants to allow courts to grant divorces to couples after they go a year without having sex instead of forcing them to live apart during the waiting period.

The measure would allow couples to stay in the same house if they’re not having sex during the yearlong waiting period…

Hmmm…you would have to pay me untold millions of dollars to stay with some women for a year and not have sex with her…that’s crazy!!! But,in this culture, if you are a man, you will probably be forced to pay her off, so you can leave and be free to go have sex without the hassles of a marriage preventing you from doing so.

That’s absolutely not for me, I would definitely fail at marriage if it’s going to be like that.

You would be better off living far away from each other, separately, free to find someone who wants to have sex with you, and one that understands the reality of the importance of it, in spite of all the other great things about marriage.

I just find a ‘no-sex’ marriage to be unreasonable, and grounds for a divorce, or not getting married at all.

Slumdog Millionaire: modern twist on the rags to riches tale as an Indian kid from the slums lands up on a game-show. There’s a lot of stock themes throughout the film; good cop / bad cop, sensible sibling / criminal sibling, life-long obsession with girl etc. Despite this Slumdog’s an entertaining story – handling and highlighting some of the best and worst aspects of growing up in India effectively. The characters are all quite memorable and it although it gets a bit far-fetched in parts it still works pretty well. For me, the growing-up section of the film was great to watch (the child actors were fantastic), but the latter part  – love story – was insipid and seemed to take forever to finish. Somehow everyone looks cross-eyed, the English-Indian accents were bizarre and I couldn’t believe I made it through an Indian film without a ridiculous dance scene – never mind. Secretly wished it would have been an ‘Unusual Suspects’ ending, and he was cheating all along… no such luck. Decent film, but don’t believe the rave reviews, or that this is the ‘real’ Mumbai. Escapism!

Score: 6.5/10

One Day Removals: Two removal men see their day go from bad, to worse, to worser, to – how do you say it… ah… ‘fucked’!  Being a low-budget, local, film I didn’t really know how bad it would be, but was totally surprised when it turned out to be pretty damn professional. For a sub-b movie this punches above its weight. A really good black comedy, with quite an original story and enough laughs to make it enjoyable. The effects and gore are impressive, the sound mix is solid throughout and you can tell that a lot of effort has gone in to it. Unfortunately, only Scottish people will be able to completely understand this as it’s in the full-blown local dialect. It’s also the most sweary film I’ve seen in a long, long feckin’ time! The news spoofing and court montage are great, but it’s worth picking up the DVD for the ‘Sewary Edit’ and out-takes alone. You can buy the film here, and it would a great gift for any homesick Scottish / Aberdonian people you know!

Last year I set out to find the secret formula for the digital tinting process Phil Borges uses to get that unique look to his images. I never did find out how he does it but I was hoping it would have been in the form of some Photoshop action or Lightroom preset…nada.

Then last night I was processing some photos when possessed by the devil, made this image black & white. It looked good but was kinda blah. I leaked the color back into it slowly until I got that desaturated look old photos get after years in an album. I added more blacks…think it was jacked up about +40, a little more contrast pushed +20 and sharpened it up at +72.

I checked it on a few photos from different shoots and it looks good. Don’t know what to call it yet though. This shot is of a Ryerson student and photographer working on a Haiti charity project. Lighting setup was AB1600 in softbox at 1/16th power camera right. I put it close enough to shoot f/8 at 1/125th sec. Another AB1600 was placed camera left using the standard reflector that comes with the strobe set to kick out light at f/5.6. The background was blown white by a ceiling mounted AB800 shooting into the cyc wall. It’s courtesy of my 50mm 1.4 USM glass.
