Signore e signori, il futuro si avvicina… chi di voi non ha mai sognato una cosa del genere?

Quello che avete visto è frutto della combinazione (aka COMBO) di Compiz Fusion e di una semplice webcam compatibile con il progetto OpenCV, condita con un po’ di pene dell’inferno per compilare OpenCV da terminale.

Premessa

Questa guida, il software utilizzato ed i plugin che andrete ad installare sono sperimentali ed instabili. Quello che vi consiglio e di non proseguire nel caso non sappiate quello che state facendo per evitare così di ritrovarvi un sistema compromesso… io ve l’ho detto!

Preliminari

Controllate se la vostra webcam è presente nel seguente elenco: compatibilità webcam. Se è presente potete continuare, altrimenti potreste comunque proseguire e controllare se il plugin funziona comunque con la vostra cam. (e ovviamente segnalarla agli sviluppatori di OpenCV!)

Iniziamo a vedere cosa serve per avere questa meraviglia funzionante:

sudo apt-get install build-essential subversion git-core libtool compiz-dev libcompizconfig0-dev libgtk2.0-dev libavutil-dev libavcodec-dev libavformat-dev libjpeg62-dev libtiff4-dev libavutil49 compiz-fusion-bcop

Download OpenCV

Procuratevi l’ultima versione di OpenCV:

svn co https://opencvlibrary.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/opencvlibrary/tags/latest_tested_snapshot

Dopo poco dovreste aver scaricato l’ultimo snapshot disponibile.

Installazione OpenCV

Come dalla migliore tradizione:

./configure
make
sudo make install
sudo ldconfig -v
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

Se fino a qui non avete avuto problemi di sorta, dovreste aver installato OpenCV correttamente. Passiamo al plugin per Compiz!

Download Plugin

Per scaricare il plugin utilizzate git:

git clone git://anongit.compiz-fusion.org/users/klange/headtracking

Installazione Plugin

Al solito, siamo tradizionali:

cd headtracking
make
sudo make install

se compilando il plugin incappate in questo errore:

facedetect.c: In function ‘headtrackThread’:
facedetect.c:264: error: too few arguments to function ‘cvRetrieveFrame’

Scaricate e installate il plugin presente qui.

Risultato ed utilizzo

Ora se aprire il compizconfigsetting-manager (gestore configurazione di Compiz) dovreste avere a disposizione un nuovo plugin nella categoria extras chiamato headtracking:

E se siete fortunati.. mooolto fortunati, una volta attivato dovreste vedere le finestre spostarsi a sinistra/destra a seconda dei vostri movimenti per simulare l’effetto 3D. Buona fortuna!

I used to love redneck culture due to the fact that I was obsessed with Southern rock bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Molly Hatchett (they still rock). Recently, I’ve moved away from that redneck side of my life in order to be more open-minded. Though the stereotypes evoke stupidity and ignorance, one redneck used his genius to invent the PC Game Gun, which is the shit.

The Wal-Mart bought toy gun has a mounted LCD display, wired in gamepad, and a gyration (motion sensing) mouse. Once this is all combined it creates the PC Game Gun. The work of this mulleted genius. Basically, it’s almost like a virtual reality simulator. The gun’s direction turns the onscreen player. The trigger shoot and the LCD displays the game. You don’t even need a monitor. He even made the newest model completely wireless.

I think this is a really cool device and he said it’s relatively inexpensive to make (we’ll be the judge of that right?). It shouldn’t cost too much though just thinking about it. Toy gun? $15. LCD? That can be a bit pricier but not more than $40. Keyboard? $10. Mouse? I looked them up – $45. So, you’re looking at a little over $100. Not too too bad for this cool little gizmo. The hardest part would be wiring in the gamepad, which would require some expertise, but the mouse just sits on it. The LCD would need some expertise to get it to display properly as well. I think it would be neat to see something like this on the market. I always wanted a home VR device.

Vous vous souvenez du projet Natal? Et bien pour changer des pirates des caraïbes (que j’apprécie comme tout le monde), je vous présente Johnny Chung Lee; l’ingénieur star de youtube.

Je vous avoue que ce n’est pas sa plastique qui m’a attiré mais ce gars a du génie et mérite qu’on parle de lui. Il est chercheur à l’université Carnegie Mellon à Pittsburgh aux USA et est plein de bonnes idées et de trouvailles de génie. Son travail le plus important reste le hacking de la wii. Notre ami Johnny Lee a en effet eu la bonne idée d’utiliser la wiimote à l’envers afin qu’elle repère le joueur plutôt que la télé.

Je sais, je sais, tout ca n’est pas très concret, mais grâce à ce principe, il a sorti 3 projets: La détection digitale à distance, la simulation d’écran tactile multi-touch et surtout la détection faciale 3D. Les vidéos sont ci dessous et la dernière (3D headtracking) est tout simplement bluffante, on jurerait que ces cibles sortent de la télé.

Pour l’histoire, Johnny travaille maintenant sur le fameux projet Natal, Nintendo ayant refusé l’expertise du jeune Johnny… Il y en a qui vont se bouffer les c….

[Manuel] has been playing around with [Johnny Lee]’s Wiimote head tracking code. He’s posted a preliminary port outlining the code in the Processing environment. It relies on darwiinremoteOSC so you won’t see this outside of OSX, but it should help you out if you’re trying to do this is in Processing on another platform.

Johnny Lee: Creating tech marvels out of a $40 Wii Remote.

Ansätze wie man 3D-Displays baut gibt es mehrere. Doch wie kann man das Ganze für nur 40 EUR machen? Ganz einfach: Man nehme eine Wiimote, zwei IR-LEDs und ein Brillengestellt, mischt das mit einem fähigen Stundenten und heraus kommt diese beeindruckende Vorstellung:
