Isabelle LaRocco of Carpentersville made history when she arrived at the 934 Center Street Sherman H

Isabelle LaRocco of Carpentersville made history when she arrived at the 934 Center Street Sherman Hospital Campus at 3 a.m. on Tuesday, December 15, 2009. Little did she know she would be the last Cardiac Cath patient at the hospital which has led the way in heart care for the region since 1972. Over 50,000 Cardiac Cath patients have gone through the doors at the old Sherman campus, including LaRocco.

Amidst final preparations for the move to the new Sherman Hospital the same day, LaRocco presented in the emergency department with substernal chest pain and heart attack. She was immediately sent to the old hospital Cath Lab where Dr. David Bromet, Cardiologist on the Medical Staff at Sherman Hospital since 2004, provided her care.

“We took her to the Cath Lab right away and placed two stents in her heart,” says Dr. Bromet. “She went from 100% blockage to 0%.”

“I am grateful because Dr. Bromet saved my life,” says LaRocco. “I am absolutely pleased with the great care he provided.”

Like LaRocco, Dr. Bromet made history. He was the last physician to perform a Cardiac Cath procedure at the old Sherman Hospital campus and was also involved in the second Code Cardiac Cath procedure to take place at the new hospital just hours later.

“Our Cath Lab went out with a bang and in with a bang,” adds Dr. Bromet. “We had a major case to close out the Cath Lab at the old hospital and two major cases to open the new Cath Lab. It was a dramatic and fitting end and beginning for us.”

Dr. Bromet assisted in the second of two Code Cardiacs that were called around 7:30 p.m. at the new hospital on Tuesday evening. Both involved heart attack patients who were sent immediately to the new Cath Labs. Since that time, the new, state-of-the-art labs have been busy − over 12 patients were treated here in the first full day of service at the new hospital.

During the Code Cardiac case Dr. Bromet had the assistance of our talented, experienced staff, including Zorka Musovic BS, RCIS, FSICP, Pamela Milbank, RN, Milka Gemaljevic RCIS, CVT and Pancho Ungos, RT.

“The new Cath Labs are beautiful, spacious and full of state-of the-art equipment,” says Dr. Bromet. “The new hospital is well designed and great for the community. The staff was always excellent, but it’s nice to finally have the space and equipment to fit their skills.”

LaRocco agrees. Following her lifesaving procedure at the old hospital campus, she was transferred to the new Sherman Hospital. Having been a patient at the old campus several times in her life, LaRocco was excited to see the new space.

“I know many of the people who work at Sherman, and my care is always tremendous,” states LaRocco. “I have no complaints. They make me as comfortable as possible, and the care at the new hospital is still excellent.”

In addition to the great care, LaRocco is especially pleased with the new private patient rooms at Sherman.

“I like the idea of the private room,” adds LaRocco. “Nothing is worse than being in a room with someone else and feeling uncomfortable. It takes away from recovery. I am very happy with the privacy.”

Although she has not given much thought to making history as the last Cardiac Cath patient at the old hospital, LaRocco says it will sink in soon.

“I am just very grateful and haven’t given much thought to making history,” says LaRocco. “I will soon.”

As physicians, staff and patients begin to settle in at the new Sherman Hospital, Dr. Bromet looks forward to continuing to provide the growing community with excellent care like LaRocco and the first two Cardiac Cath patients at the new hospital received.

Says Dr. Bromet, “We’ll continue to keep the bar held high in Cardiology and provide innovative care and services to the community.”

Newspapers have carried detailed biographies and achievements of K. Mohandas as Director of Sree Chi

Newspapers have carried detailed biographies and achievements of K. Mohandas as Director of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology as he is being appointed as the Vice Chancellor of new Kerala University of Health and Allied Sciences in Thrissur.

However, the grapevine is that the new director at the Institute Dr. Radhakrishnan is bent of undoing what has been done by Dr. Mohandas. This may be pure canard and result of factionalism among staff. However, it has becoming increasingly clear that the Institute is not maintaining its old standards. It is not clear whose legacy this is. But, overcrowding is indeed one of the main reasons.

Long waiting time for patients is usual at the hospital and it can be explained as the result of overcrowding. However, how can one explain hour-long queues before the cash counter? Why do doctors fail to visit patients admitted to the hospital for days?

Postponement of procedures are becoming routine in the cardiology wing. Patients are readied for surgeries, angiograms and the like and then abruptly told that the procedures has been postponed (without any medical reasons). They are often administered preparatory medicines and made to forgo food for hours, only to be told that all that was in vain. (When something like that had happened in a government hospital at Neyyattinkara, the government had ordered an enquiry). This causes considerable stress among patients and that could even be fatal for cardiac patients. A few patients sob.

Patients, whose surgeries or angioplasty is postponed, simply remain in their beds — no doctor may visit them and no nurse would take their blood pressure. This happens when the Institute is short of beds to admit all those on the waiting list.

Well, the food may be good for most patients– the hospital provides eggs to patients on medication for cholesterol. Some say that there are rats in the intensive care units of the Institute. One indeed finds syringes and waste materials on the sun shades.

The doctors, especially those of the neurological wing, seems to be devoted to their work despite overcrowding and other problems. The nurses are qualified and experienced, but tend to ignore safety in minor matters like administration of IV fluids. So, one may find air bubbles in the tube used for administration of IV fluids.

The hospital system is indeed stressed and it is high time that the Central government pumped in more money to expand the facilities. A new building need to constructed to meet the demand for beds.

The Most Recession-Proof Jobs Right Now
By Helen Coster, Forbes.com, November 30th 2009

Amid the gloom, job hunters can find reasons to be optimistic. Pockets of the job market continue to show growth, especially in the fields of education and health services. Last month those perpetually resilient sectors saw some of the country’s highest monthly gains in employment. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the job market’s second-biggest gains, after health care, were in temporary help services, as employers who couldn’t invest in full-time staffers turned to part-time labor instead. In October, 34,000 employees entered the workforce in new temporary jobs.

Top 5 Recession-Proof Jobs Today

1. Registered nurse

Job description: Most registered nurses work at hospitals, where they treat patients and provide emotional support and advice to patients’ family members. Nurses also help perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, record patients’ medical histories and symptoms, administer medications and treatment and help with patient follow-up and rehabilitation.

Salary: $55,000 to $90,000.

2. Retail (including store manager, assistant store manager and retail sales associate)

Job description: Run stores and help shoppers through every aspect of the retail purchase process.

Salary: Sales associates earn $15,000 to $30,000, while store managers can bring home as much as $80,000.

3. UPS driver helper(seasonal)

Job description: UPS driver helpers pack and unload UPS trucks during the holiday rush.

Salary: Part-time driver helpers receive hourly rates of $9.50 or more, depending on their locations.

4. Financial advisor

Job description: Financial advisors help businesses and individuals make investment decisions.

Salary: Compensation varies according to the client base. Private bankers, who work with wealthy clients, can earn seven figures.

5. Occupational therapist

Job description: Occupational therapists help patients improve their ability to perform tasks related to all parts of their life, from dressing and eating to typing on a computer. Therapists also help patients use adaptive equipment, such as wheelchairs. Some therapists work with infants who show signs of developmental delay.

Health refers to health care or health services at a distance using World Wide Web and other electronic networks. E-health can be interchangeably used with health. Communication through computers from and to any corner of the world has become much easier with the invention of internet in 1972.

It has been rough that approximately half of patients attending mental health services for conditions plus anxiety disorders have problems caused by long-term expend of alcohol or benzodiazepines. Many family that are addicted to alcohol or prescribed benzodiazepines decide to quit using those drugs when it is explained to them they have a choice between ongoing ill mental health or quitting and recovering from the symptoms. Anxiety disarray can arise in response to life stresses such as financial worries or chronic geographical illness. Somewhere between 4 per cent and 10 per cent of older adults are diagnosed with anxiety disorder, a figure that is probably an underestimate due to the tendency of adults to minimize psychiatric problems or to focus on the geographical manifestations.

The semester is quickly winding down. It seems like classes only started a few days ago and we are about to be on Thanksgiving break. I have some updates on things going on in SGA and within our university.

The University Tuition Committee voted on a 4.2% tuition increase. The breakdown of revenue from the tuition increase is
the following:

Financial Aid “hold Harmless:”
50%

Three Faculty Positions to support the Health Sciences Initiative:
14%

Other Academic and Student Support: *
36%

*Including:
-Web Librarian
-LAP Academic Advisors
-Assistive Technologist Specialist for Disability Services
-Academic Advisors for Health Sciences and Allied Professions
-Internship Coordinator for Health Sciences and Allied Professions
-Heltzer Honors Academic Advisor
-Counseling Center Counselor
-Financial Aid Counselors

The University Fee Committee has voted on their official recommendation for fee increases. Here is what the committee voted to do:

Athletics
Fee: $10
Reasoning: To cover the cost of utilities for the new athletic complex

Health Services
Fee: $20
Reasoning: To cover the cost of two psychologists who’s funding was cut by the state

Housing
Fee: $200
Reasoning: Only paid by those who live on-campus. Covers the cost for the demolition of Coffey and the construction of a new and much larger dorm

Book Rental
Fee: $10
Reasoning: The price of textbooks has increased and this fee increase offsets the rising cost of textbooks

Transportation
Fee: $10
Reasoning: Will fund the addition of Routes for the Green Route and the POP 105 Route

If there are any questions regarding tuition or fee increases please shoot me an e-mail or come by the offices. I will say that student representation on both of these committees was excellent. I stongly feel that these recommendations represent students needs on our campus and that the recommendations were made with affordability in mind.

Both recommendations have come in at well below the 6.5% cap set by the Board of Governors. The committee’s recommendations have been made to the Chancellor and he will make his recommendation to the Board of Trustees who will vote on their recommendation to the Board of Governors next Friday, December 4th.

Medical Amnesty is still a work in progress. I have a revised copy of the written policy several times and I now hope to gain some kind of endorsement from the Risk Management Committee and Safety Council soon. I will keep you all posted on its progress.

There is a lot going on within SGA and I hope that you will continue to check back to read other cabinet member’s blogs to see what we are all working on. Have a great Thanksgiving and travel safe! Don’t forget to come back to Boone for the playoff game on Saturday!

Sincerely,

Jonathan Meisner

FML.

You roll out from underneath your covers to turn off your alarm clock. You’ve got a very busy day ahead of you: three classes, a group meeting and a date with your roommates to catch up on Glee from the past three weeks. Everything has been so busy lately you haven’t had time to eat a meal, let alone get your weekly dose of Finn. If you’re not sleeping, you’re in class, and if you’re not there you’re in the library, oftentimes well past midnight.

And it’s finally catching up to you.

As you try to rouse yourself out of bed, you feel it. Your head hurts, you can’t swallow and your whole body just feels achy. You walk to the bathroom to wash up, hoping it’s just one of those “I slept with my mouth open” deals; it will go away in a few minutes.

Only it doesn’t. In fact, bending over the sink to splash some water on your face makes you dizzy and angers the little men pounding hammers against the inside of your skull. It’s official: you’re sick.

“Oh god. Could it be Swine Flu??”

You crawl back to your room and sit down at your computer. You enter your symptoms into WebMD figure out your diagnosis/rule out any deadly diseases. You learn that you either have the flu… or meningitis. Either way, you need to take your temperature, which you cannot do since you don’t have a thermometer. Maybe you can just sleep it off?

Before getting back into bed, you send a quick email your professors/group members/roommates to let them know that you are sick. You do not mention the word “flu”; you don’t need anyone sending you to the Swine Flu quarantine, thankyouverymuch.

Your body is really hurting now so you shut your computer and climb back into bed. You’re thirsty, you’re achy and, dammit, you want your mom. So you call her. Yeah, she’s over 6 hours away, but at least she’ll tell you what to do… and feel bad for you.

And feel bad she does. She tells you to drink lots of fluids, get lots of rest and call her when you wake up. Even though you knew all of those things, just talking to her makes you feel a little better. You hang up, roll over and go back to sleep.

When you wake up a few hours later you’re feeling worse. You try to drink some water but you can’t swallow. And forget eating; even the thought of a piece of toast makes your stomach churn. You debate going to the health center; those “doctors” a joke and that requires getting dressed and walking across campus. But what other choice do you have? You call your mom.

After getting a sufficient amount of pity and love from mama (“Oh honey, you know I’d bring you soup if I was there.”), you decide to go to the doctor. You pull on your biggest sweats, put your hair up in a ponytail, throw on your glasses and head out. You look like crap and you know it, but you don’t care. As unflattering as those men’s sweatpants are, you still feel a hell of a lot worse than you look. As you walk past other students laughing on their way to class you silently curse the world, asking the guy upstairs why you have to be sick. And why is the health center so far away? And why does everything hurt so badly?

Eventually you make it, sign in and sit down in the room full of coughing students, closing your eyes in hopes it will make your headache go away. 45 minutes and two phone calls to mom later, the doctor calls you in. She spends 6 minutes examining you – which includes questions on your sexual history for some reason – then tells you it’s the flu, there’s nothing she can do and you just need lots of fluid and lots of rest. Then she places her gloved hand on the small of your back and pushes you out of her office so she can let the next sickling in.

You call your mom again on the way home to whine a little more. Then again when you’re back in bed. Then again when your roommate brings you chicken soup that isn’t nearly as good as hers. Then you turn off the phone, dive under your covers and fall asleep. At 7 p.m. Missing yet another week of Glee.

Yeah, we’ve all been there.
There is nothing quite like being sick to make you hate your life and miss your mommy.
