On my way to the city one late night last week I found this suicidal bird on the edge of the platform. I stumbled over to talk him into not doing it. “Don’t jump little birdy, please don’t jump.” He just looked at me with the saddest little eyes I had ever seen. “I just lost the love of my life to a cocky seagull who broke my wing when I tried to defend her, my beloved Bitsy.” I noticed that his wing was dragging behind the rest of the body. I leaned closer and patted him on the healthy wing. “Life just isn’t worth living anymore”, he said and jumped down on the tracks, strategically situating himself on the rails. “Good bye.”

Codex Alimentarius – What Its About? Codex alimentarius will be rolled out fully on January 1s

Codex Alimentarius – What Its About?

Codex alimentarius will be rolled out fully on January 1st 2010 but most people are blissfully unaware of what it really entails. The Codex issue can’t be accurately seen in isolation. It must be seen in a broader context, then all of this madness makes sense. You can’t fight evil unless you can first SEE what it is that you’re trying to oppose. These megalomaniacal elites and their heavily funded scientists are actually on record with plans to reduce the worlds population by two thirds. In case you were wondering that means YOU.

It is necessary that the USA cut its population by two-thirds within the next 50 years.

Howard Odum – Marine biologist, University of Florida
(Member of the Club of Rome)

More and more people around the world are becoming aware of the Codex Alimentarius proceedings affecting their rights for self determination to have access to vitamins, minerals and other natural substances in order to maintain and preserve our health. Why do you and other government bureaucrats who are supposed to defend and protect the rights of those you serve want to deprive us of the basic means to help ourselves to stay well and healthy?

They honestly think they are protecting our health, this is the really insidious part of the whole situation. They have been so deeply inculcated with the mainstream medical propaganda that taking more than the RDA of any given nutrient merely enriches the urine, that they actually believe they are protecting all of us from out and out fraud. Moreover, the penalty to them for failing to believe this is to incur the undying wrath of their superiors.

The Globalists who are pulling the strings on our elected officials like so many marionettes want total control of the whole world, and they’re rapidly bringing about a complete end to the sovereignty of all nations. They are rapidly trying to force us into a dictatorial world government, and they fully intend to kill off large numbers of us via premeditated genocide. Beyond that, they fully intend to inject us all with an injectable microchip so that they can control our thoughts and actions because what they want is a psychocivilized society of mind controlled slaves.

Their plans have been totally exposed in the books of Cathy O’Brien and Brice Taylor, both of whom escaped the CIA’s MK Ultra Mind Control program. The veracity of their claims can be verified by the mountain of documents and hundreds of testimonies. They both went through a form of hell that the average person can’t even remotely conceive of. This is a very real battle going on between forces of good and forces of evil. God, and Satan are dueling it out and our planet is the battleground. The FDA and medical industrial complex are satan’s minions. Human life means nothing to these people, they worship the Golden Calf. Total enslavement of of the remaining population of the world is their end goal.

International Advocates for Health Freedom is a true grass roots, decentralized movement of vitamin consumers world wide opposed to the pharmaceutically rigged Codex Shell Game, to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and to all statist elements of coercion, Wherever they may be found, anywhere in the world. As free people, we are sovereign over our own BODIES, With a God given unalienable right to ingest any substance of our choosing, (especially vitamins and minerals) into OUR bodies as we see fit.

Apologies for the lack of blogging lately! My life currently consists of the following and not much else:

- My Screenplay (which may eventually get posted)
- Horror Presentation (Freudian elements in the Alien series!)
- Farmville! – FINALLY bought my tractor and harvester, exciting times!
- Cooking (using wine as an ingredient works)
- Twitter – namely following/stalking celebrities and actually talking to them! haha!
- Procrastinating.
- Group hugs with house mates to cheer up our dear female roomie.
- Watching My Boyfriend sleep walk/talk at his xbox; we assume he was going to drunkenly urinate on it, but we can’t be too sure.
- Looking up very weird but interesting facts.
- Life, a BBC documentary which everyone should watch.

I’m also starting to get really into the Christmas spirit, which is exciting! A month until my birthday! Less than a month until Mamma Mia!
I’m currently working on a new blog which isn’t very Christmas-y but contemplates love, relationships and all that jazz. Don’t worry, it’s not a reflection upon MY relationship as that is going very, very good. Just a reflection and finger pointing.

Peace out, dear readers.
Follow me on Twitter if you’re regular users as I tend to update that every few hours with funny/not so funny quips!

Dr. Eldon Dahl is a naturopathic doctor whose home was raided by the RCMP and Health Canada nearly a

Dr. Eldon Dahl is a naturopathic doctor whose home was raided by the RCMP and Health Canada nearly a year ago. From his description below it sounds as if what happened at his home was very much like what happened at the Manna Storehouse Coop in Ohio last December, and, for that matter, at Michael Schmidt’s Glencolton Farms 3 years ago. In his case however, it seems to have been about vitamins that someone, apparently, didn’t want him to have. The videos linked to mid-way down the letter were made in January 2009. The letter that follows was written recently and was addressed to members of Canada’s Senate, which, as far as we know, is still contemplating the passage of Bill C-6. Thanks to Gordon Watson for passing this news item on to the Bovine.

Health Canada raided my loving family – at gunpoint – and kept us prisoners in our own home for 11 hours while they confiscated both business and personal property. I am a naturopathic doctor who sells 100% safe natural products. One of the excuses for the raid was that the totally harmless folic acid (a vitamin) that I sell did not conform to regulations. Instead of informing me by letter or phone call, Health Canada used swat team tactics, which caused us extreme emotional distress as well as irrecoverable financial loss. This unreasonable search and seizure is proof positive that Health Canada cannot be trusted with the powers it already has.

We Need to be Heard

The steering committee of the Social Affairs Committee has excluded witness appearance days for opponents of Bill C-6 and from consumer groups who have an interest in the consequences of this unprecedented piece of legislation. Instead of democracy, there is another agenda in motion. C-6 is fatally flawed in that it unlawfully violates both the constitution and our charter rights as Canadians. Outspoken advocates of this position, including Dr. David Rowland, Trueman Tuck, Shiv Chopra, Helke Ferre and myself have been refused witness days.

In order not to run the risk of hastily enacting an unlawful piece of legislation, the Committee needs to lift its time constraints. It needs to give equal air time to learned opponents of C-6. True democracy demands it. It should be the right of every citizen to participate in any legislative process that would deny our fundamental rights as Canadians.

Health Canada’s Hidden Agenda

I read with interest the testimony of Health Canada officials before you on 21 October 2009. They basically told you to “trust” them: that they would not abuse the sweeping powers given to them by Bill C-6. I don’t believe them. Neither will you when you read how Health Canada conducted an armed raid on my loving family and treated us as criminals, keeping us prisoners in our own home for 11 hours.

Food and Drugs Act gives Health Canada the power to “seize and detain for such time as may be necessary any article by means of or in relation to which the inspector believes on reasonable grounds any provision of this Act or the regulations has been contravened.” Health Canada has for many years been using this clause as an excuse to remove from the market entirely safe products which are incapable of harming anyone, and in our case are products that many count on to build and maintain their health. By means of C-6, Health Canada intends to extend its confiscatory powers to every industry that sells consumer goods of any kind.

Note that subsection 23(1)(d) above doesn’t even mention safety or harm. It gives total discretion to inspectors to remove from the market any product which they believe contravenes the Food and Drugs Act. C-6 gives to Health Canada the power to do this (and much more) to those whose consumer products simply may not happen to conform to bureaucratic dictates.

Whenever a product is unjustifiably removed from the market, consumers of it are adversely affected by being deprived of its benefits and by having their rights to enjoy it taken away. Until now, Health Canada has been using its rogue powers to restrict the freedoms of health consumers. If C-6 becomes law, then every consumer in Canada will be affected by this runaway bureaucracy.

All of the products that I sell are totally 100 per cent safe. All are freely available for sale in health foods stores in the U.S. There has never been a single documented fatality nor even one documented case of harm caused by any of the products I sell, not ever, not in the entire history of the planet. Clearly, Health Canada has for many years been using safety as a smokescreen to hide its true agenda. What is worse, now Health Canada is using safety as the banner they wish you blindly to follow.

What happened to me and my family on 15 January is shocking and incredible, especially given that it happened in Canada and in 2009. My wife and I are still affected adversely by its impact. I wish I were able to tell you about it face-to-face rather than through the written word. If you would like to connect more personally with the events and injustices of that day, feel free to watch any or all of these four short segments recorded on YouTube:

My True Story – Bill C-6 in Action

Health Canada is already doing what they say they won’t do:

On 15 January 2009, at our home in Calgary, my wife answered the door. Four RCMP officers, one with his gun drawn and finger on the trigger burst through. The sheer force of entry damaged the locking mechanism, which lay on the floor. I will never forget the terrifying look on the face of my wife; I have never seen her so afraid. To describe the panic that I felt is nearly impossible. My wife raised her hands over her head in surrender, as an armed RCMP officer pointed his gun to her chest yelling, “That is not cool, that is not cool!” I thought she was going to be killed.

Unbeknown to us, at our daughter’s house across town, our daughter’s roommate was experiencing the same treatment. The RCMP and Health Canada broke into our daughter’s house without her name appearing on any warrant. This is her private residence totally unrelated to our business. The raiding party forced themselves into my daughter’s house and even kicked in her bedroom door.

That day’s events have permanently scarred my memory, and I live with the terror that it may happen again. I heard my wife say, “Please put the gun away! We are no harm to any of you. We are humanitarians, not criminals.” The RCMP kept us confined for the “protection” of Health Canada agents who arrived shortly thereafter, under the supervision of drug inspector Kim Seeling.

I was handed a search warrant and told of our right to remain silent, because anything said could be used against us in a court of law. The search warrant was for Folic Acid, the amino acid L-carnitine, plant based progesterone cream and other ultra safe supplements that are available over the counter in the USA or for export. I asked the officer for clarification, “You raided our home at gunpoint for common vitamins?” He answered, “We have a search warrant for these products.”

My wife asked the officers for their names and badge numbers; they refused her request. My wife, daughter and I were sequestered to sit in our living room for 11 hours. I asked the officer if I could photograph or film the investigative proceedings. He said, “You need to sit where you are. We are treating you very low key. We could place you in a holding cell till the search and investigations are concluded, but we don’t think it’s necessary if you cooperate.” Next I was supervised by two RCMP officers who forced me to open our home safe. Once opened, Kim Selling photographed its contents.

Whenever washroom breaks were needed, a male RCMP officer went with us and stood at the door and listened. Having my wife and daughter victimized in our own home clearly violated our Canadian Charter Rights. And why? Everyone has the right to be secure against unreasonable search and seizure.

Storm trooper tactics were never required. The decent and humane thing would have been for Health Canada to notify me in writing or by phone call that they suspected some of my products may not have been in compliance, the let me respond and make good on any alleged noncompliance. After all, my products are 100% safe, as Health Canada well knows.

Present Day

November 15, 2009 marks 11 months. No charges have been laid against me. My entire finished products inventory (not only those listed in the search warrant) continues being seized, my case files are sealed, the RCMP Incident Report refused, and our Access of Information report has been denied. My ability to make an income remains severely restricted because I am unable to conduct any business.

Health Canada also seized my family’s personal computers plus a tax refund cheque that was in my desk. I am an author, and two of my books that were to be published are on the hard drives that were confiscated. Thus, I am also unable to earn an income from my writing.

In seizing my entire inventory, Health Canada violated Section 37 of the Food and Drugs Act, which exempts products that are not manufactured or sold for consumption in Canada. Many of the products I sell are destined for foreign countries and fully comply with the regulations in those countries.

Health Canada also went way beyond its authority by deliberately damaging my international trade reputation. This is an abuse of power with intent to harm. They questioned Slovakia Health, stating that they had concerns about our company’s reliability. When I asked what the enquiry entailed, the inspector at Slovak Health would not say what Health Canada was asking for nor if they divulged any of my confidential information to him.

Health Canada is already destroying businesses and livelihoods. C-6 would give them the power to escalate and expand their police powers exponentially, across many industries, including every retail store in Canada. Since Health Canada has a history of abusing the powers given to it by the (the armed raid on my home being only one example), there is reason to believe that they will also abuse the even greater powers given them by C-6.

It is one thing to examine the wording of C-6 and yet another to see and feel its dire consequences. That is why it is so important for you to appreciate what happened to me and my family. Incidents like this will become commonplace if C-6 becomes law.

I write to you on Remembrance Day. My father, like many others, fought overseas in WW II for our freedom. Who would think that in 2009 we would be fighting again for freedom, only this time within our own borders and with a rogue department of our own government?

I am not a complainer. I can take punches like anyone else; but I ask you Canadian gate-keepers, how would you feel if this treatment happened to your family in your home? Do the right thing and protect Canadian citizens from harm, but in so doing, don’t take away our constitutional rights and freedoms.

Mine is just one story about Health Canada’s abuse of power over small businesses. There are many others.

Constitutional Concerns about Bill C-6:

- Scientific Ignorance. In the total absence of scientific evidence of harm, Health Canada intends to take action against product vendors.

- Allegiance to Foreign Governments. Health Canada intends to ignore Canadian Sovereignty.

- Disclosure of Confidential Information. The Health Minister may disclose personal and confidential business information to third parties without the consent of the concerned person.

- Unreasonable Search and Seizure. Inspectors may enter any premises where they believe there are products relating to the Act. They may examine and seize anything deem relevant.

- Trespassing. Inspectors may enter on or pass through or over private property, without being liable for so doing.

- Use of Force. Inspectors may be accompanied by peace officers authorized to use force.

- Confiscation. Goods seized may never be returned to their owner. Anything seized may become forfeited to Her Majesty in right of Canada.

- Lack of Training. The Minister may designate any person to be enforcers of the Act, regardless of their qualifications, training, or experience.

- Unlimited Powers. Inspectors may take any measures they consider necessary to remedy non-compliance with the Act, including putting the person out of business.

- Excessive Penalties. Anyone who contravenes a provision of the Act may be fined up to $5,000,000 and imprisoned for up to five years.

- Presumed Guilty. Anyone whom is believed to have contravened sections of the Act is deemed guilty of an offence – even if their products are totally safe. Anyone who pays a fine is deemed to have committed the violation in respect of which the amount is paid.

- No Defense. Those named in a notice of violation are not allowed to defend themselves by truthfully claiming that they exercised due diligence to prevent the violation. Innocence and truth are irrelevant.

- Bypassing Parliament. Health Canada intends to expand the powers of C-6 even further by issuing Orders in Council which will not be subject to parliamentary debate.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

10. Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him.

12. No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation.

17(2). No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his property.

Canadian Bill of Rights

1. It is recognized and declared that in Canada there have existed and shall continue to exist without discrimination by reason of race, national origin, colour, religion or sex, the following human rights and fundamental freedoms, namely,

1(a). The right of the individual to life, liberty, security of person and enjoyment of property and the right not to be deprived thereof Except by due process of law.

1(b). The right of the individual to equality before the law and the protection of the law.

2. Every Law of Canada shall, unless it is expressly declared by an Act of Parliament of Canada that it shall operate notwithstanding the Canadian Bill of Rights, be so construed and applied as not to abrogate, abridge or infringe or to authorize the abrogation, abridgment or infringement of any of the rights or freedoms recognized and declared, and in particular, no law of Canada shall be construed or applied so as to

2(e). Deprive a person of the right to a fair hearing in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice for the determination of his rights and obligations.

2(f). Deprive a person charged with a criminal offence of the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, or of the right to reasonable bail without just cause.

Charter of Rights and Freedoms

8. Everyone has the right to be secure against unreasonable search or seizure.

11. Anyone charged with an offence has the right

11(d). To be presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal.

In the medical world a hemorrhoid is described as an enlarged or swollen vein. Hemorrhoids bear some resemblance to varicose veins that are found in the legs but these veins are foudn in the anal canal. The veins act as a buffer to protect the anal area. Issues including pain happen when the veins stretch under the extra pressure.

Hemorrhoids are frequently a problem for both men and women with the usual age of sufferers being the over 40’s but some over 30 also have the issue. It has been estimated that greater than half a million folks in America speak to a doctor regarding treatment for their hemorrhoids each year. From the 500,000 piles sufferers, about ten to twenty per cent will require surgery.

Most medical professionals blame the formation of hemorrhoids on prolonged sitting on the toilet and chronic straining due to constipation. Hemorrhoids are also found often during pregnancy, because of the straining from carrying the extra weight of the baby.

You may suffer from internal or external hemorrhoids. In most cases internal hemorrhoids will not be too uncomfortable but may lead to some bleeding. The blood will likely be very red as it comes from artery blood which is different from the darker blood in the venous system. Sometimes hemorrhoids will be external from the anus. Usually these hemorrhoids, which are called prolapsed, can be gently pushed back inside. If not, speaking to a doctor must be done.

If you have external piles then you will know because of the discomfort you will no doubt be feeling. If the piles you have are of the external kind then you will not be surprised to find some blood after a bowel movement.

There are ways to relieve the discomfort of hemorrhoids. Taking a sitz bath is known to work when lessening the irritation of piles. You may like to try resting in some warmish water for a short time a couple of times a day. A good idea is to use gentle pads instead of toilet roll. You can buy these pads at any drug store. Applying any piles treatment that you can pick up from a store can relieve you of some of the pain for a short time.

Prolonged periods of either standing, or sitting can aggravate hemorrhoids. Straining when you have a bowel movement is one of the chief causes of them, and will definitely make them worse and much more painful. Do not do it. A reason for having constipation can be a lack of fibre in your daily diet. Have a fibre supplement.

You should speak to a doctor if you have bleeding like this.

Rationing? What rationing? The flap over breast cancer screening has provided a fascinating insight

Rationing? What rationing?

The flap over breast cancer screening has provided a fascinating insight into the political future of ObamaCare. Specifically, the political left supports such medical rationing even as it disavows that any such thing is happening.

No sooner had the Health and Human Services Department’s U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommended against mammography for women under 50 than Secretary Kathleen Sebelius rushed to say don’t worry. The decision had “caused a great deal of confusion and worry among women,” she said, promising that no policies would change. New Jersey’s Frank Pallone vowed to hold hearings, and Senator Dick Durbin leveled the gravest charge Democrats can make: The task force was “appointed by President Bush.”

The political duck-and-cover was also on display in that vanguard of ObamaCare known as the New York Times, which ran at least four much-ado-about-nothing items even as it endorsed the reduced screening. On the same day as an editorial and op-ed, a front-page “news analysis” lectured that what the public really needs is “a transformational shift in thinking” about the “evidence-based” medical future that the mammogram decision portends. Yes, and no doubt the Times will tell us what “evidence” to follow.

Even more revealing was Princeton’s Uwe Reinhardt, a leading liberal health-care economist, writing on the New York Times Economix blog. Mr. Reinhardt sees the task force’s handiwork as an exemplar of “rational decision-making” that had nothing to do with cost analysis, even as he claimed that rationing based on cost is inevitable.

You have to admire Mr. Reinhardt’s partisan dexterity. He knows that no government task force is ever going to justify a treatment denial with an overt claim to costs. Instead, the task force found a sneaky way to use clinical data to take costs into account without admitting it. It cites all sorts of harm associated with the problem of “overdiagnosis”—i.e., too many costly procedures. This is a reference to mammograms that lead to further tests and treatments that in hindsight are unnecessary.

The HHS task force concludes that this harm outweighs the benefits of saving lives through early detection, yet this makes little sense unless financial costs are a priority. For instance, the panel cites patient anxiety from false positives, yet the literature also shows overwhelmingly that women would rather risk a scare than allow a cancer to progress—especially considering that about 75% of all breast cancers develop in women who do not have special risk factors.

In any event, the distinction between cost effectiveness and clinical effectiveness will be moot if ObamaCare passes. The House bill gives the HHS task force the mandate to review “the benefits, effectiveness, appropriateness, and costs of clinical preventive services” in making its de facto insurance coverage rulings. As Mr. Reinhardt notes, “at some point soon the rising cost of American health care actually will force Americans to bring monetary costs into the analysis as well.”

What’s really going on here is that the left knows its designs will require political rationing of care, but it doesn’t want the public to figure this out until ObamaCare passes. Then it will begin the campaign to instruct the rest of us that we must follow the guidance of Princeton professors about what medical care we can receive. Americans will simply have to accept that the price of government-run health care in the name of redistributive justice is that patients and their doctors must bow to the superior wisdom of HHS task forces.

Just don’t admit it until after the White House signing ceremony.

When the Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister), Brian Cowen, was Minister for Health he memorably called

When the Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister), Brian Cowen, was Minister for Health he memorably called this particular cabinet brief ‘Angola’, because of all the unexploded political landmines he felt it contained. In fact, very few politicians have found the stewardship of the country’s health system to have furthered their careers, with the possible exception of Charles Haughey, who was able to remain focused on policy initiatives and service improvements while there. Most politicians in charge of health appear to be quickly overwhelmed by the combination of intractable problems and vocal vested interests. And just in case anyone thought that this was a peculiarly Irish phenomenon, the same is pretty much true in the UK, and as we know even Barack Obama is struggling (though perhaps with some success now) to make health reform work for his administration in the United States.

But difficult though health policy and its implementation may be, it is right at the top of everyone’s list of priorities. Right now the global health system is having to deal with H1N1 influenza, as well as the various other diseases and pandemics rampaging through parts of the world. We also know that ageing-related health issues will need to be addressed for demographic as well as social reasons. We know that the relationship between health, diet and lifestyles needs to be explored further. In short, health is everyone’s burning concern. And in that setting, we have not really worked out yet how best to structure the healthcare systems in our countries, and how to pay for them; the demand-led system of universal benefits, when applied to healthcare, has not just become unaffordable but actually unmanageable – but we struggle to work out how we could do it better.

One aspect of all this that will need a lot of attention is health research. This is important for two reasons: first, we should be addressing in high value research the key issues that are having an impact on people’s health; and secondly, we should harness the economic benefits of healthcare research as a magnet for high value investment by companies in this field, including some of the biggest blue chip companies in the world. Although these are two different reasons, they actually point us in the same direction: that we should focus on certain programmes of research where as a country we have or can reach critical mass, and we should present these areas as ones that should attract international industrial investment in Ireland. Some of these areas are already clear, such as cancer research (where the National Cancer Institute has brought together the key players from the North and South, with US partners); others show potential, such as Diabetes; and others again support health research and treatment, such as medical diagnostics (with DCU’s Biomdedical Diagnostics Institute playing a particularly important role).

All this is likely to be helped by the new strategic plan of the Health Research Board, which has prioritised research in certain key areas and has also highlighted the importance of translational research, meaning research with a programme for its use in improving or solving health-related issues.

It is important for us to think of health as an opportunity as well as a problem. Ireland has some real excellence in health research across all the universities and other institutions (such as the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland), and therefore can both make a contribution to addressing global health issues and gain an economic benefit from doing so. It is, as they say, a no-brainer.

I received this e-mail from Nancy Campbell of Above Rubies. Mrs. Campbell asks that her articles be reprinted in their entirety with her web address included. I’ve read Above Rubies for years. It is a wonderfully encouraging magazine for homemakers and mothers who embrace God, home, and family.

BEAT THE FLU THIS WINTER!

Dear friends,

As we approach flu season, it is good to be reminded of ways to prevent it. There are better ways to prevent the flu than being vaccinated. Check out the following points to keep yourself and your family in good health during this winter season.

1. AVOID ALL SUGAR

This means to not only refrain from sugar, but all foods containing sugar, which are most foods on the shelves of the supermarket. Read labels very carefully. In fact, when you read the labels first, will find that you will have to put most foods back on the shelf.

Sugar makes a perfect environment for viruses. Sugar completely destroys your immune system. It destroys the germ-killing ability of white bloods cells to kill bacteria and viruses up to five hours after intake. It interferes with the transport of vitamin C which is needed to fight the flu and robs the body of nutrients such as zinc that are vital for the immune function.

Sugar affects everyone, but has more serious consequences for children. Keep your children away from all sugar and especially when flu viruses are around. That means at Christmas time too!

Also, please reduce carbs as they turn to sugar in your body. Especially eliminate all whites–not only white sugar, but white flour, white pasta and white rice. Completely eradicate pop and sweet teas. I refuse to have sugar in my pantry.

2. BUILD UP YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

The stronger your immune system, the less likelihood of getting the flu or any disease.

Here are some ideas for building up your immune system for you and your children. You can do what suits you best–or do them all!

My daughter, Serene, who has eight children, gives herself and the children the following once a day or more as needed.

COLD AND FLU FIGHTER
½ cup chopped onion
A whole bulb of chopped garlic
2 TBS chopped fresh ginger root
1 chopped jalapeño

Put all ingredients in a quart jar, cover with raw vinegar and let sit 4 – 6 weeks. Strain out vegetables and use 2 TBS. or more each day. If you do get a cold or the flu, take every hour. Serene gives her children 1 TBS. each day as a preventative.

VITAMIN C
1, 000 mg morning and evening

GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT
Give children three drops in water once a week. If you notice any signs of flu or colds in the family, give three drops in water once a day. Adults should take 10 – 15 drops in water at the slightest sign of a cold or flu. You can obtain this extract at a health food shop.

TODDLER MIX
To make it easier for toddlers to take these vitamins, mix the following:
1 TBS. or more of yogurt (no sugar added)
Crushed Vitamin C tablet, smaller dosage for toddler
Juice of ½ orange
2 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract
Stevia for sweetening
Mix together and give to toddler as needed.

VITAMIN D3
1,000 mg each morning to children
1,000 each morning and evening for adults. Most adults need much more than this. The consensus is that anything up to 5,000 mg a day is safe and beneficial for most people. After a hydroxyl test, most people find they need more than this. The optimum levels for the body are 60 – 90 ml. Vitamin D builds the immune system and also fights cancer.

COCONUT OIL
This is a marvelous food that builds up the body’s own natural defenses against viral infections, disease and cancer. Take as much as you can each day. You can’t take too much. Use the Extra Virgin Unrefined Coconut Oil for medicinal use. Put 1 TBS. or more in your smoothies. Use it for all your cooking instead of other oils. You can use Expeller Pressed for cooking.

If there are any signs of flu in even one of the children, Serene gets her children to take a banana and dip it into coconut oil (about 2 TBS coconut oil). This is an easy way for the children to eat it. You can also get the children to put the coconut oil behind their ears and massage it into their lymph glands and also in their nose.

Use coconut way every way you can. Use it for all cooking instead of other oils.
RED PALM OIL
This is another super oil. I only use Coconut oil or Red Palm oil for cooking in our home. Every other oil turns to Trans fat when it is heated. Not only are these safe oils to cook with, but they add many nutrients to your body. Both Coconut oil and Red Palm oil strengthen the immune system.

You can put a little Red Palm oil in your smoothies. My husband spreads it on his bread, but I have to admit, I cannot take it that way. But use it as much as you can in your cooking. The following is a smoothie recipe to try:

Ginger Sunrise
2 fresh oranges
2 lemons, peeled with knife, removing yellow rind, but keeping the white pith
1 – 2 bananas (great for children, eliminate for adults as fattening)
2 TBS. Red Palm Oil
1 large handful of flax seeds or chia seeds
2 TBS. Coconut oil
2 chunks fresh raw ginger (about 1″)
Sweetening – Stevia
Ice cubes
Blend very well in Vita Mix or good blender until smooth.

3. SLEEP

There is nothing like lack of sleep to run down your immune system. Sleep and a healthy diet are your best preventatives against the flu and colds. Make sure you have adequate sleep, especially during flu season. Try to get to bed early.

I grew up with the old wives’ tale that the hours of sleep before midnight are the most beneficial. Science has now proved this adage, although I must admit I have broken the rule most of my life. I am now trying to go to bed earlier. The plan is to go to bed no later than 10.00 pm–9.00 pm is even better.

Staying up much later than 10.00 pm causes your adrenal glands to make cortisol. This is taxing on the adrenal gland and can lead to adrenal fatigue. Does this sound too hard? It is actually better for your health, and you will accomplish just as much by getting up earlier in the morning. And remember, I am preaching to myself!

4. OTHER PREVENTATIVES

I have a friend who uses the following for her family. The taste is wonderful.

ELDERBERRY COLD AND FLU FIGHTER SYRUP
½ cup elderberries (check the Internet for dried elderberries)
4 cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1 TBS grated fresh root ginger
2 cups water
Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 – 30 minutes. Add ½ cup honey. Store in refrigerator. Take 2 TBS. each day to prevent colds and flu. If you have the flu, take every hour. This recipe only keeps two weeks in the fridge so you will need to make a fresh batch every two weeks.

CHOPPED GARLIC
Any easy fighter is to chop up 1 or 2 garlic cloves very, very finely. Pop in your mouth and swallow before you have a chance to taste the flavor or imbibe the smell. This is an easy and wonderful way to fight the flu. I find this simple and effective.

THIEVES OIL
Many folk use the following Natural Antibiotic Recipe using Young Living Therapeutic-Grade Essential Oils. Here is the recipe from Quick Reference Guide for Using Essential Oils, compiled by Connie and Alan Higley, 10th edition.

12 drops Thieves Oil
6 drops Oregano Oil
2 drops Frankincense Oil
Put drops in a “00″ size capsule and ingest one capsule every 4 hours for 3 days, then every 8 hours for 4 days.

To purchase oils, go to Amazon.com

BURIED TREASURE – ACF (Acute Cold and Flu Formula)
This is highly effective for fighting colds. You can purchase it as your local health food store or online. Our daughter, Pearl, always has it on hand for use at the first sign of a sniffle.

HORSERADISH

Horseradish root is a powerful antibiotic and useful for fighting the flu, as well as urinary tract infections and even cancer. I have just harvested the roots from m y garden and am getting ready to prepare it as a sauce and to use in other recipes. Check the Internet for all kinds of wonderful recipes.

Prepare the following to use as needed. Slice or chunk the horseradish root, place in blender and grind, adding small amounts of vinegar for a good consistency, about 1 TBS vinegar (I use apple cider vinegar) to 1 cup horseradish. The vinegar preserves the horseradish and enhances the flavor. Vinegar stops the heat-building enzyme activity that grinding causes. If you want hotter horseradish, wait before adding the vinegar. Adding the vinegar right away will make the horseradish milder.

Horseradish will take your breath away, bring tears to your eyes, but at the same time clear all your sinuses, help ward off the flu and make you feel great!

You can add 1 TBS. of horseradish to your coleslaw or even to your meat loaf you are preparing.

CUT AN ONION
This is another old wives’ tale that I grew up with, but I still do it and believe it works. If someone gets a cold or flu in the house, I cut an onion in half and put it in a strategic place. Supposedly the germs go to the onion. If my husband has a sniffle, I cut an onion and put half by his side of the bed and half by my side of the bed. He complains of the smell but puts up with it!

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE
A lot of germs come through the ears. As a preventative, pour a little Hydrogen Peroxide in the ear. I love to feel it bubbling in my ear. Do it once a week (perhaps on the weekend), one night in one ear and the next night in the other. I find it easier to do it this way as the peroxide doesn’t run out from one ear when pouring it in the other ear.

THYM-UVOCAL
An herb which strengthens the immune system and fights off infections. Check the Internet for purchase. Adults only.

5. WASH HANDS FREQUENTLY

Wash your hands frequently throughout the day, especially before eating. Wash under running water for 20 seconds or sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY while washing. It is most important to train your children to do this.

6. DO NOT TOUCH EYES, NOSE OR MOUTH

I find myself doing this and am having to get into the habit of not rubbing my eyes, mouth or nose. Teach your children about this also.

7. NETI POT

Check the Internet for a Neti Pot to clear nose and sinuses.

8. AVOID FLU VACCINATIONS, ESPECIALLY THE H1N1 SWINE FLU VACCINATION

The H1N1 vaccination has many dangers. Check out more information before allowing yourself and your family to become a victim to these shots.

Squalene
The Swine Flu Vaccine, unlike other flu vaccines, contains squalene, an additive which when introduced into the bloodstream, causes crippling auto-immune diseases like Lou Gehrig’s disease, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, polyarteritis nodosa, and Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Squalene in vaccines has been strongly connected to the Gulf War Syndrome. The H1N1 vaccine contains 1 million times more squalene than the vaccine given to Gulf War soldiers (which resulted in 140,000 veterans contracting the auto-immune disease Gulf War Syndrome). The use of squalene is illegal in the USA and UK but is being allowed under the emergency pandemic decree. Dr. Russell Blaylock states, “If you receive the vaccine, there is little you can do to protect yourself–at least by conventional medicine. It will mean a lifetime of crippling illness and early death.”

The US government has given vaccine manufacturers (Novartis, Baxter, Glaxo-Smithkline, CSL) complete legal immunity from any deaths or injuries resulting from their vaccines.

To try some delectable recipes with Coconut Butter (it is called butter when it is cold and goes hard, and oil when it is soft in the summer or heated) you can order COCONUT RECIPES by Serene Allison from the Above Rubies website: www.aboverubies.org

The US government has given vaccine manufacturers (Novartis, Baxter, Glaxo-Smithkline, CSL) complete legal immunity from any deaths or injuries resulting from their vaccines.

today is the last day of my fifth chemo cycle. i’ve gotten used to distracting myself from feeling nauseous, accepting it when i’m tired, and making the most of the time i have to feel all right. still i don’t like it very much.

(NaturalNews) The cancer industry has blatantly abandoned science these past two weeks by insisting

(NaturalNews)

The cancer industry has blatantly abandoned science these past two weeks by insisting women under 50 should receive annual mammograms even though the industry’s own scientific task force concluded that such screenings result in too many false positives. Essentially, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force took a good, hard look at the science and concluded that mammograms harm far more women than they help (for women under 50, anyway). But when they announced the new recommendations that women under 50 should avoid mammograms — and women over 50 should only get them every other year — the cancer industry cried foul.

Radiologists, oncologists, Big Pharma pill-pushers and cancer industry non-profits all banded together to declare, “We are abandoning the science! We want more mammograms for more women, science be damned!”

Of course, they all still claim to be “scientific,” but what they really do is selectively cherry-pick which bits and pieces of the scientific evidence they choose to adhere to. And when it comes to these new mammogram recommendations, they’ve decided to simply abandon the science and keep pushing more radiation imaging tests for women (mammography).

The cancer industry is a complete failure

What you are witnessing here, folks, is the desperate last gasps of a failed industry. Their technologies do not save lives, their drugs do not cure cancer, and their “science” doesn’t add up. The cancer industry is a fraud, and now its fraudulent nature is finally becoming apparent to everyone. It even has the mainstream media (USA Today) describing the failures of mammography in articles like the one you’ll see here: http://www.usatoday.com/news/health…

Here’s something else you need to know: The cancer industry hasn’t merely abandoned science in terms of mammography; it has also abandoned all science with the pushing of chemotherapy. Did you know there has never been a randomized, placebo-controlled study proving that chemotherapy saves the lives of breast cancer patients?

That evidence doesn’t exist. The whole “treatment” scam is based entirely on fiction. Chemotherapy only works at all against three rare types of cancer, and breast cancer isn’t one of them.

In defending the new mammography guidelines, Dr. Timothy Wilt, a member of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, said that the task force recommendations “were based on the most rigorous peer review of up-to-date, accurate information about the evidence about the harms and benefits of treatment.”

He repeated that women under 50 should never receive mammograms, and women 50 or over should only receive a mammogram every two years.

The American Cancer Society, quite predictably, has a real problem with that recommendation. Its entire success (and power) depends on more people getting cancer, and one of the best ways to make sure that happens is to keep pushing for more mammograms. In opposing the new mammography recommendations, the ACS has now abandoned science, too.

Chemotherapy: The chemical holocaust

When cancer doctors tell you that “chemotherapy will save your life,” they are lying to you. And they lie thousands of times a day, deceptively recruiting women into modern medicine’s version of a chemical holocaust.

The cancer industry offers no cures. A cure for cancer would destroy the industry. It would wipe out billions of dollars in profits that drug companies, radiologists and oncologists are counting on right now. This is precisely why the cancer industry dares not tell women the truth about vitamin D, for example, which prevents 77% of all cancers, including breast cancer.

If every woman in America were given vitamin D supplements, cancer rates would plummet by up to 77% in a single year, and the cancer industry would virtually collapse. That cannot be allowed to happen, of course, which is precisely why the industry has a complete blackout on vitamin D information while pushing hard for annual mammograms that continue to cause cancer (and generate repeat business).

The U.S. government has abandoned science, too

Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services, has told women to ignore the new mammography advice by the U.S. government task force. But she has zero scientific evidence to back up her advice. She, like everyone else pushing mammograms, is engaged in pure quackery.

I find this particularly fascinating, given that the cancer industry claims people who are offering cancer cures are “quacks.” Such cures aren’t based on rock-solid science, they claim! But when the rock-solid science says mammograms are dangerous for women, the cancer industry abandons the science! That’s why they are the new quacks.

Here’s a simple prediction: In twenty years, mammograms will have been long since abandoned. Doctors of that era will look back at 2009 and wonder how this so-called “modern” medical industry could have been so deeply invested in such a dangerous, cancer-causing technology called mammography. They will scratch their heads and ask, “Why didn’t they heed the science that said mammography is dangerous?” They’ll write about “how medically illiterate the people were in 2009″ because they voluntarily inserted their body parts into irradiation machines.

The fact is that people of every era are suckers for apparent medical authority. Patients tend to believe doctors because they mistakenly think doctors know what they’re talking about. But conventional doctors are technicians, not healers. They understand the detailed of how to administer poisons, but they have no clue how to activate the body’s innate healing potential.

Doctors tend to be very intelligent individuals, but even they cannot understand things they’ve never been taught, and medical school is focused almost entirely on a drugs-and-surgery approach to medicine (slash and burn).

To expect a conventional doctor to be good at healing is like expecting your accountant to be good at ballet.

Doctors may be smart, but they’re ignorant about healing. And for the most part, they’re nutritionally illiterate, which is why cancer doctors still don’t recommend vitamin D. (Astonishing, but true.)

So why, then, would patients who are interested in healing their bodies go see medical professionals who are experts in the administration of poison? It makes no sense. But that’s what insurance covers, so they keep doing it. And they keep dying of cancer, an almost entirely preventable disease with cures that exist right now but will never be publicized because too much profit depends on keeping people sick.

Mammograms are the insurance of the cancer industry. As long as mammogram machines keep running, there will always be more cancer to diagnose — because the machines are making cancer!

I’m the kind of girl who requires a butterfly needle for a blood draw. I’m the kind of girl who requires a warm compress on my arm before even attempting a blood draw. I’m the kind of girl who usually spends more time in the lab chair getting poked and prodded than in the waiting room.

You think you comprehend? No, I don’t think you quite understand.

I’m the kind of girl who shows up to work after a blood draw with a compression bandage around each arm AND one around the back of a hand, bruises developing quickly on all three sites. Yes, it’s usually that difficult to get enough blood for a “simple” A1c, TSH, and lipid panel.

For whatever reason – enough water consumption in the past couple days (thanks to past lab tech advice) or being warm enough on my own bundled in my winter coat until my name was called (thanks to a blood draw veteran’s advice) or all the planets were correctly aligned – Ryan the lab tech had absolutely no problem finding a vein this morning. AND I was in and out of the lab itself in only five minutes (though I still needed that necessary butterfly needle), only slightly shorter than my time spent in the waiting room.

And look, ma, no bruising!

I think it’s been a while now since I wrote about food but it’s right near the top of the list in what I’ve been working with lately. When I first got to school I was excited to get back to baking budget friendly snacks; crackers and muffins in particular. It was all going well for a few weeks and then I started to notice that it wasn’t all agreeing with me. Of course I continued baking for a little while longer.

At the same time, the naturopath I’ve been seeing here was pointing towards my possible challenges with gluten. Having been wheat free for the better part of 7 years I didn’t listen very well at first. Doh! During this time the variety of grains I’ve been using has been on steady slide with spelt being the only thing in my cupboard here. I didn’t truly wake up to my possible gluten challenges until after a couple of restless nights in late October when I was using barley rather than the usual buckwheat in a magic bag to warm my bed. It was as if I’d just eaten an offending food before slipping into bed. It took hours to fall asleep, the sleep never lasted for long and I would feel soooo tired the next day. Quite simply, I should have known better.

I’m hopeful that my body will accept spelt, barley etc. more pleasantly after a bit of a sabbatical so lately I’ve been testing out gluten free. I started with Bob’s GF rolled oats* that I was grinding up in the blender to make flour. This form of oat flour doesn’t take up as much liquid as spelt but it seemed to work well for cookies. Then I had the nerve to try making muffins. Fail!

I was quite defeated by the muffin failure and it took a good 10 days or so for me to recover enough to start looking at what else might work. Fortunately I have some familiarity with the other options since Kevin has been gluten free for the past few years. Mind you, he can’t have corn or soy and I can’t have rice. He’s been doing his own baking ever since his gluten discovery. I’ve helped find recipes but that’s about it. I’ve often felt bad about this but somehow unable to get past it and just try making something I can’t sample. Sadly, I think this new hyper-sensitivity to gluten may be just what I needed. Being able to provide food, especially of the baking variety, has been so important for me and I’ve really felt the void these past few years.

This weekend I got Kevin to share some of the recipes he’s got at home and I’ve stocked up on almond flour, sorghum flour, tapioca flour, arrowroot flour and xantham gum. No doubt it’s going to take some work but I suspect there are far more vegan GF baking resource out there now. If you know of any I’d be happy to learn.

Oh, and after about 3 weeks of searching I finally found buckwheat pasta for less than $10 a package. It’s made in China but at this point I don’t much care. I can eat pasta again and we’ll be able to share the same pot of food when I get home. Yay!

* Oats are a problem with some GF folks but so far so good for me. I also know from tests that I had done in university that I don’t have celiac disease.

I found this article on an MD’s blog and it really made me stop and think. As one of those “older” nurses with 20 years of experience, I will have to watch and rethink my opinions of the profession and of my peers after reading this.

I, too, have always heard the maxim that “nurses eat their young” and I have seen this in action. I am sure, then, that the opposite must also be true as pointed out by the author of this article.

Now that I think about it, I do believe that I have seen this behavior in action but failed to recognize it for what it really was!

It’s really our loss when we denigrate and devalue all the experience of the older nurse simply because they have trouble staying abreast of all the new technological changes in healthcare. These are the nurses who know the most about NURSING. These are the nurses who have stayed at the bedside through all the upheavals in medicine and who have advocated for their patients despite getting no respect. Just because they can’t text page the doctor, or access labs on the hospital computer system without help, doesn’t change anything about what they have to offer.

Take a look around you the next time you are on the floor and add up the years of nursing experience you are surrounded with on a daily basis. Maybe, just maybe, you might do well to try to absorb some of it instead of being impatient and intolerant.

Last time I talked about how I had never really experienced the concept of nurses eating their young in action.

However, I have seen the opposite begin to evolve. I see this as a bigger issue in nursing these days. The “putting out to pasture” of seasoned, experienced nurses is happening more often and for a variety of reasons.

First, and foremost, is simply the fact that the pool of nurses inevitably follows the general aging of the nation. As baby boomers who once filled the halls of healthcare institutions caring for others begins to age, they will certainly have a more difficult time meeting the demands of current healthcare. More and more institutions are requiring nurses to work longer and longer shifts, changing from an 8-hour day to a 12-hour day. This, along with the fact that patients in the inpatient settings have much higher acuity and a variety of complex issues, makes the demands on nurses even greater.

I know for myself that when I was working 12-hour shifts, I could only do two in a row. If I had to do the third one without a break, I was exhausted. I can only imagine how someone five, 10, or even 15 years older than me would feel. In fact, I remember one time when a new young nurse just starting out came to me and sheepishly asked, “What do you do when you go home after working a 12-hour shift?” He was finding that he was very tired and often unable to do anything but go home, have dinner, and go to bed. If someone that young has difficulty imagine how it is for the older nurse.

Not only are the hours and the complexity of patients difficult, but also the physical strain. Because patients have such high acuities, they often require turning, positioning, and moving that can cause stress on the nurse’s back, neck, arms, and legs. Injuries among nurses are much higher than even injuries among construction workers. Again, more stress and difficulty for the older nurse.

Another point to take into consideration is the advent of new technologies for diagnostics, assessment, and documentation. Often, when facilities start to change to electronic medical records, it’s the older nurses who have the most difficulty. The younger nurses grew up with advanced technology everywhere around them. I remember the first computer class I had to take in college taught us how to do keypunch machines. There were giant computers in a lab that you had to schedule time to use to do your work. Then you carried around a stack of cards with little computer generated holes punched in them, that when read, gave a story. Then many years later when I took a nutrition class and was told we had to do a computer program, I was terrified. I didn’t know how to use computer programs. How times have changed… But that’s the point. If you haven’t grown up with that being a part of your everyday life, it’s very difficult for some to catch on and take hold of new technology.

Finally, the recent change in the economy has put a different kind of strain on older nurses. Where they might have been thinking of retiring, they now find that they must remain in the workforce to survive. I’m just afraid of what is going to happen over the next couple years when the economy starts to rebound; people are feeling safer and we see a mass exodus of retiring nurses. I think it will be a time of extreme nursing shortage and we should start planning for it now.

But what makes nursing different than other professions that are facing an aging workforce, and what is it that really bothers me the most? It’s the concept of not just aging but of truly “putting out to pasture.” If an older nurse has not worked their way through the ranks and is still in the trenches of bedside or chairside nursing, how much support are they getting? Forget the concept of the seasoned nurses not nurturing and helping the newcomers.

As I’ve said, I have not seen that phenomena. But what I have seen is a sense of impatience towards the older nurse; an underlying feeling that they just can’t cut it and not a great sense of wanting to help them. Not only the impatience, but it’s almost a disdain for them. It’s as if they don’t highly regard the years of experience as valuable because the person might have a more difficult time with the newer techniques. I’m not sure how we got to this point. I’m sure it has something to do with the whole outlook that each of the generations have on work, socializing, and facing the world, but it is a bit disheartening to see around me. I have always learned to respect those with more experience and try to learn something from them. That doesn’t mean that I think that we should allow someone who cannot physically do the job stay in the job.

But I think we could, as a profession, hold up our experienced nurses and learn something from them instead of always thinking we need to teach them something.

Amid conflicting and heated rhetoric, a political pragmatism began to emerge Sunday as senators prep

Amid conflicting and heated rhetoric, a political pragmatism began to emerge Sunday as senators prepared for a debate on a sweeping Democratic health care bill.Senate Democrats barely won a vote Saturday night to open debate on the 2,074-page bill. The debate on amending the proposal is expected to last for weeks and won’t begin until after Thanksgiving. Some legislators got a head start Sunday, reciting well-honed arguments for and against the bill and offering perspectives on the political realities facing Congress. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the chamber’s second-ranking Democrat, acknowledged he was open to changing the bill’s controversial government-run public health insurance option favored by the left.“We are open because we want to pass the bill,” Durbin told the NBC program “Meet the Press.” Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-New Hampshire, summed up the situation to CNN’s “State of the Union” program: “Listen, in the end, this is going to be a compromise. It’s not going to be a perfect bill, but it’s going to be a very important starting point.” Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado, a Democrat appointed last year to fill the seat vacated when Ken Salazar became interior secretary, told CNN he would support the health care bill even if it meant losing his job in his first election for the seat next year. Republican opponents continued attacking the bill, calling it an unnecessary takeover of the health care system that would harm, not help, the economy and the American people. “We do not believe completely restructuring one-sixth of our economy is a good idea at any time,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, told CNN. “It is a particularly bad idea when we’re looking at double-digit unemployment.” McConnell and other Republicans call for an incremental approach that they say would reduce the costs of health care without creating new bureaucracy and taxes. “We think we ought to go step-by-step to improve the system,” McConnell said. “The American people are not complaining about the quality of health care. They’re complaining about the cost of health care.” Democrats respond that the Republicans are ignoring millions of Americans who can’t get health insurance.Sen. Arlen Specter, a Pennsylvania Democrat who was a Republican for most of his long career until changing parties this year, told “Fox News Sunday”: “The one option which is not present in my judgment is the option of doing nothing.” “We have the opposition refusing to admit that there’s any problem with health care, refusing to admit that there’s any problem with global warming, refusing to take a stand on the economic crisis,” Specter complained about his former party. The 60-39 Senate vote Saturday to open debate revealed the partisan divide on the issue, and the fragility of the Democratic support. Democrats needed their entire caucus, including two independents, to muster the 60 votes required in the 100-member chamber to overcome a Republican filibuster. Now several conservative and moderate Democrats say they won’t support a final bill that includes a public insurance option. Republicans unanimously oppose the public option, which means it cannot survive in the chamber without unanimous Democratic support.

“I don’t think anybody feels this bill will pass” in its current form, Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut told NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Lieberman voted to start debate on the bill, but reiterated Sunday he would join a Republican filibuster if the public option remains in the proposal when it comes time to end the debate. He called the public option a “radical departure” from the government regulation and litigation traditionally used to deal with failed competition in the U.S. market economy. Other risky issues for Democrats include abortion and tax increases to pay for health care reform. A comic moment occurred when Republican Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona and Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer of New York responded simultaneously when asked on the CBS program “Face the Nation” if the Senate bill would raise taxes, Kyl saying “yes” and Schumer saying “no.” The bill includes tax increases aimed at those earning more than $200,000 a year and insurers providing “Cadillac” health plans worth more than $8,500 a year for individuals or $23,000 for families. It also would set a 5 percent tax on elective cosmetic surgery. In contrast, a separate health care bill that the House of Representatives narrowly passed this month includes an income tax surcharge on individuals earning more than $500,000 a year and couples making more than $1 million. Republicans say any tax increase is bad in a struggling economy because it hinders growth and gets passed on to consumers. Democrats argue the bill’s tax provisions don’t hit the lower or middle class and will create incentives for private insurers to lower the cost of policies. On abortion, the House bill has more restrictive language regarding the use of federal funding, and some Senate Democrats said Sunday they would resist adding it to their chamber’s proposal. “We shouldn’t be using health care reform to rewrite long-standing policy from the federal government on abortion,” Bennet said on CNN. “It’s just not right. It’s not the place we should be doing it.” If the Senate manages to pass a bill, a congressional conference committee will then need to merge the House and Senate proposals into a consensus version requiring final approval from each chamber before moving to President Obama’s desk to be signed into law. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the Senate health care bill would extend health coverage to 31 million additional Americans and reduce the federal deficit by about $130 billion over the next 10 years, through 2019. Any effect on the deficit in the following decade would be “subject to substantial uncertainty,” but probably would result in “small reductions in federal budget deficits,” the CBO report said. Both the Senate and House bills would require individuals to buy health insurance, with penalties for non-compliance. Unlike the House version, the Senate bill does not mandate that all employers offer health care.

The two bills are virtually identical on a broad range of changes, including creating health insurance exchanges, expanding Medicaid, subsidizing insurance for low- and some middle-income families, and capping out-of-pocket medical expenses, while preventing insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions.

Let’s face it: we live in a world continuously growing in reliance on technology. I’ve read several things (blogs, articles, etc.) in the past about how the popularity of social networks on the Internet makes it easier to keep in touch with friends and family. While that’s always a good thing, especially for college graduates who move far away, but still wish to keep in touch with people, there’s always that question about letting people move on and essentially forget about each other.

College has taught me a lot about friendship. Though there are some moments that I tell myself I’d rather forget, each taught (and still teaches) me a little bit more about the value of friendship. I’ll admit that making friends isn’t something that comes easily to me. Maybe I don’t “get out there” enough, or maybe I’m fulfilling this psychological concept I vaguely remember hearing in my personality class. Either way, it seems clear that the friends who stick around (and the people actually worth keeping) are the ones I met in “abnormal ways.”

Wrestling with the concept of friendship is something on my mind a lot, especially with graduation less than a month away. I ask myself practically every day: What is it about this person that makes her worthy of my friendship? Which of the people whom I’ve met in college are going to be around in a month, a year, or even ten years? Will the existence of social networks and other fast communication tools (e.g. texting) be the only thing that keeps us together? Does that make it a true friendship, or is there something that must struggle through time to prove itself reliable?

My final question is one I pose to readers: what fills the role of “friendship” in your mind? Is it just a label for people you hang out with on occasion? Or is there a deeper, more long-term commitment that’s unspokenly expected? How does modern technology affect your answer? Curious questions for a curious mind… :-/

Living in Toronto is difficult without a car. With all of this H1N1 flu virus talk going around, you cannot even cough on a bus without someone thinking you have been infected. Plus with the way the TTC has been running over a long period of time now, it seems ridiculous that now TTC wants to hike up the fees to $3 CDN, from $2.75.

I have been a long time TTC rider. It was what got me to and from school for a great part of my high school years, until I finally received my coveted license. I only had my beautiful car for two years, then I learned about the Ottawa Transit system that went through its own set of problems last year. For the majority of my return to life to Toronto since 2001 after living in Montreal – I have been either biking, however mostly taking the TTC. I take the TTC great distances to get to work and rely on it to get me there in comfort, convenience and in a timely fashion.

When it comes to the comfort part, often times, the TTC fails miserably. Often it is littered with free newspapers, Tim Hortons coffee cups and muck and general debris on the ground. In terms of convenience – the TTC stopped being the better way for quite some time now. Even a complete idiot could explain to me that with a good insurance plan and an inexpensive car which you can buy at this time of year – it is actually cheaper to own a car in some cases, than to take the TTC. As for in a timely fashion, all I need to do is look back to almost a week ago when the subway service shut down between Eglinton and Bloor and think about the hours it took some very good people to make it home. Not to mention all the money it took some of these very good people to make it home.

It seems as though the TTC’s only saving grace is the fact that it’s good to the environment. With that said, I guess I will be buying my bus pass again for December.
