so i’m taking this video class. and my assignment is to create a 3-4 minute video with the theme “my front porch” as the guidance. i’ve been trying to get people to let me interview them. the people that have businesses here, boy are they eager to “help out.” i love it.

i have met some really cool people that are committed to the neighborhood.

the people that live here, well, let’s just say i don’t blame them for not trusting a little white girl movin into their neighborhood and next thing you know she’s got this big camera on her shoulder and wants to put you on t-v. even my own husband was too shy.

however, despite these snags and some anxious moments over the lack of interviews, i’ve got three now and will soon go for my fourth. so i’ll have about one hour of people talking, to narrow down into 3 minutes. yeah, i think despite my worries i’ll have plenty to work with.

i’ll share it with you when it’s done. and i’ll let you know what time to watch the public access cable station that it’ll air on. meanwhile, i’m learning how much more effort i need to put into getting to know my neighbors.

This is a little early to get a ‘Feature Friday’ post out, but it’s something I think many of you will be interested in hearing about as soon as possible.

I’ve written a few times about a program called, “Get The Lead Out!” and the Healthy Homes Coalition. Since those posts, even more toys have been recalled for lead contamination.

If you are concerned that toys your children received during the holidays have lead in them, the Healthy Homes Coalition is holding a toy screening for lead hazzards. This event is free and open to the public.

Parents will be able to bring in up to three of their children’s toys to have them checked for lead content. Screening will be provided using x-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology.

The screenings will be Thursday, January 10 at Browning Claytor Health Center, 1246 Madison SE in Grand Rapids and Friday, January 11 at Studio 28, 1350 28th Street SW in Wyoming. Both events will run from 9:00am until 5:00pm.

Free blood lead tests for children birth through age five will be provided by the Health Plan of Michigan to children who are at-risk and who have not recently been tested. Additionally, experts will also be on hand to talk about lead hazards in housing. Information will also be available about City of Grand Rapids and State of Michigan programs that assists parents with making their homes lead-safe.

For more information, call (616) 241-3300 or visit Healthy Homes Coalition.
