FDA approves Vascepa for heart care

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Vascepa (icosapent ethyl), a new prescription-based formulation of fish oils to treat very high levels of triglycerides, or very high levels of fats in the blood stream.

Vascepa, in a 1 gram oral capsule, is indicated as a treatment method as supplement to diet to help reduce triglyceride levels in adults with severe hypertriglyceridemia. Along with cholesterol, triglycerides is a blood fat that contributes to cardiovascular disease. Vascepa contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are contained in fish oil and thought to have heart-protecting properties.

Vascepa, formerly called AMR101, is manufactured by Amarin Corporation plc, a biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Bedminster, New Jersey that focuses on developing therapeutics to improve heart health. Vascepa is Amarin Corporation’s first FDA-approved medication.

“FDA approval of Vascepa represents the introduction of an important new treatment option for patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia. In Amarin’s MARINE clinical trial, Vascepa demonstrated a statistically significant placebo-adjusted reduction in levels of triglycerides without elevation in levels of LDL-C, commonly referred to as ‘bad cholesterol,’” stated Joseph Zakrzewski, Chairman and CEO of Amarin.

Approximately 4 million Unites States adults have severe hypertriglyceridemia ( > 500 mg/dL), according to Amarin.

With Vascepa’s FDA approval, it becomes a competitor for high-selling heart pill Lovaza, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline Plc.

Amarin hopes to commercially launch Vascepa within the first three months of 2013.

Maintaining a healthy diet is crucial for everyone, especially a patient of heart disease. However, if you are on certain heart medications, some healthy foods may be causing dangerous interactions between the two.

Some of the best examples are grapefruits and pomegranates. These two fruits can effect the way cholesterol medications work.

Another example includes green leafy veggies such as spinach and kale. These can counteract blood thinning medication that is used to prevent strokes. This doesn’t give you a free pass to avoid vegetables though. Some medications work with your normal diet so it’s important for you to maintain consistency and balance.

Alcohol is always a controversial health topic with many studies showing that in moderation, red wine can be good for you. On the other hand, overindulging in the consumption of alcohol is unhealthy. Drinking alcohol can have an impact by changing the way your liver filters the medication throughout your body.

Your best bet is to consult your doctor regarding the medication they have prescribed. Make sure you know what restrictions or limitations you have while taking your heart medication.

Information for this post was found from the American Heart Association. Check out their website for the “Food and Medication Interactions” post in its entirety.

Cell phone image.

We took Gabriel to see a holistic vet today. I wanted to get a second opinion about the weight loss and his condition. It was a good visit. The dr. met with us for about an hour and discussed possibilities as to why he’s losing the weight and his life in general. It was nice to actually talk with a dr. for that long. Usually when we see the cardiologist everything is so rushed and we end up paying an arm and a leg for a 5 min consultation. Also this dr. actually seemed like he cared and was concerned about Gabriel and his weight. He advised that we keep him off the Benazapril, and lower his diuretic dosage because the dosage he’s currently at is so high. He even said that he usually doesn’t see dogs on that high of a dosage. He also wanted Gabriel to start taking the potassium supplement again and added an herbal heart medication to his daily medications. Lets see if anything helps with making Gabriel live more comfortably and finally gain some weight. The good news is he’s gained .08 lbs since the 12th of this month, about 2 weeks ago. I was so happy to hear he’s gained anything! I was so concerned because he lost almost 2 lbs in a matter of 5 weeks. So this was awesome news! Oh and the vet also said that usually animals that have that rough n’ tough attitude, such as Gabriel displays, can live a long time with kidney & heart disease. He says that their strong personalities usually prolongs their lives. For anybody reading this that really knows Gabriel, you know what a stubborn cat he can be. So I was very happy to hear that. All those years of shelling out bad attitude is seen as a positive. Overall it was a great visit and very informative. I will have to take him back in a couple of weeks to get his blood tested again. I always hate that part and I’m sure Gabriel does too. But he doesn’t show it. He’s a strong little dude and he makes me very proud. I will keep you all updated. Thanks for all the well wishes, keep them coming. Both Gabriel and I enjoy them. bpm = 32, 34

LOVE SCENE INVESTIGATION

Gerald is such a catch. Tall, athletic, successful as a TV host/ party promoter and close to his family. He was very passionate with me at first but now … I don’t know if it’s work stress or me. He says he’s just tired and dismisses me with a chaste peck on my forehead. Then he’s always criticizing my appearance. He won’t touch me sexually at all. Basically his attitude is: “No sex for you. You haven’t earned it. You’re not thin enough. You could maintain yourself better — I mean, look at my sister.” His sister is a young, single, Black female addicted to retail and the spa/ salon life. Do I seriously need to waste my paycheck that way so he’ll feel inspired to treat my ladyparts to some attention? So I am trying to lose weight (5 lbs.) and tone up. Also to be manicured, pedicured and spectacularly well-groomed. Maybe when I get it right he’ll love me like he used to, you know?

-Angie G.

Stan and I had a great relationship for 5 solid years. Then his Dad died suddenly after being on heart medication for over a decade. My own father died when I was a teen so I totally sympathize. Now it’s been three years since we buried his father and our sex life is gone, baby, gone. Stan stays angry, depressed and uncommunicative. Unless he’s putting on a show for his friends or co-workers, it’s pout, grumble, monosyllabic answers, sloped shoulders and smoking a ton of marijuana everyday. I am just devastated that he has no love or affection for me anymore. I’m like, “Hey! I didn’t kill your Dad.” His stance is: “No hugs or kisses or handholding for you anymore. Ever. Because I’m angry and sad so you’re S*** Out of Luck.” Imagine if I were asexual forever after my Dad died. There’s sadness and grieving but come on already. It’s not like no one else ever lost a parent. my boyfriend go? Did the pod people get him? I must sound like a complete bitch.

-Jade S.

WARNING SIGNALS

Withholding affection. I bet you never saw this problem on the horizon.

Suddenly your man refuses to even acknowledge that you need to be taken care of. And that means sharing hugs, kisses, massages and lovemaking. He’s intentionally detached and uninvolved with you; you could be dating your aunt or a nun from your Catholic grade school. He’s just there, denying you intimacy and keeping his thoughts, hopes, dreams and feelings secret from you. You try to connect in a thousand different ways to no avail. Whether depressed or on the down low, your man is getting off on the power of seeing you yearn and need. The more unsatisfied you are as he remains just beyond reach, the more in control he feels of you and your relationship.

It’s a not-so-nice fact of life that grieving isn’t wholely sympathetic and pretty. It can be angry, ugly and punctuated by bouts of lashing out.

A Withholder sometimes needs to dominate, dupe and demean even the women he initially desired and admired. Suddenly you’re not that attractive anymore. And he’s constantly correcting your slight mistakes, making you feel guarded, and dumb. He makes you feel like you’re always doing something wrong. This gradual chipping away at your confidence and self-esteem sets you up to be treated even worse later on as if you deserve it.

You feel badly. Your man’s loss of interest is devaluing you. Occasionally, he throws you a bone–cries so you comfort him, eats dinner with you, says kind things—to lead you to dismiss your sense that you’re being mistreated. All the while he’s conditioning you to think less highly of yourself and to accept his unloving, inconsistent behavior.

Now it may not be malice — just water finding its own level. He’s miserable so he needs you to be miserable. He’s asexual so he needs to make you asexual. He’s getting sex elsewhere so he needs to wean you off his, not that he wants you to find it somewhere else either. Because you want to hold on to the fantasy of the ideal relationship he cultivated, you go into denial. You accept his excuses for months and years. No sex, little affection, no validation that he really even wants you. You stomach your growing fears and doubts. You rationalize his inexplicable absences, his coldness in bed, his busy dismissal of your attempts at intimacy, his increasingly frequent emotional withdrawals, his curt and icy replies, his petty and mean-spirited ways of punishing you for being needy or for not “giving him his space.”

TROUBLE-SHOOTING

Have a talk. Get counseling or get him to see a psychotherapist.

If that doesn’t improve matters, you need to seriously look at the front door.

It ain’t so bad – y’all can still be friends. And you can find a man who’ll act like he actually likes you and wants you as a woman in every way.

A study conducted by the Stanford University School of Medicine found that less than half of patient

A study conducted by the Stanford University School of Medicine found that less than half of patients being treated for congestive heart failure(CHF) received medications that could help. Over the 15 year study, they also found that the number was decreasing.

Of patients with CHF, 20 percent die within one year, and 80 percent die within eight years. Heart failure accounts for 3 percent of U.S. hospital admissions and is the leading cause of death in the developed world. Congestive heart failure happens when the heart muscle loses its ability to efficiently pump blood through the body, often because of high blood pressure or heart disease.

Doctors have a variety of ways to treat the disease, including drugs that expand blood vessels to allow blood to flow more easily, called ACE inhibitors and ARBs, and drugs that improve the heart’s ability to pump blood, called beta blockers. Additionally, device therapy is an excellent treatment, as well.

Bi-Ventricular devices, or also known as CRT-D and CRT-P, help to pump both ventricles in the heart. This pumps more blood back into the body and returns a better standard of living. http://www.cardiochoices.com website has a great video and explanation of the devices and how it helps.

Patients receiving the recommended medicines could live longer and have fewer hospital visits. Ultimately, the cost of appropriate therapy could help reduce health costs. Both medicine and device therapy are effective against mortality and morbidity.

So the question arises, as to, why aren’t more patients being treated appropriately. In the female population, they often times choose a gynecologist as their primary physician. This leads to misreading heart disease signs and symptoms until it’s too late. Another reason is insurance benefits and the cost of medicine. An older population may choose to forego higher priced medicines, but many of these are available in generics, today.

In conclusion, patients have the right to choose their physician. If you are not satisfied with the treatment plan prescribed to you, seek another physician. If you want to know the symptoms of heart failure go to http://www.cardiochoices.com/cardiovascular-conditions/heart-failure.php.

It looks like you have symptoms of hormonal imbalance. There is much that can be done to help, even for patients with chronic, complex medical conditions who are taking multiple medications. The best course of action depends on your particular situation. You should begin by talking with your current physicians about your troubles, but be careful to avoid synthetic, non-bioidentical hormones. If that doesn’t work, look for a physician who specializes in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy who can work with you and your doctors to achieve optimum hormonal balance. Once your hormones are balanced, you will feel better and you may lessen the impact of your other medical problems.

Friday, February 1st is National Wear Red Day in honor of raising awareness about women and heart disease. So ladies (and men) pull out your best red outfit and show your support for this very important cause and health issue that is the number one killer of women in the United States. Of course you know I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t give you a few statistics. Here are some very important things you need to know about women and heart disease.

Heart disease is the #1 killer of American women.

One in every three women dies of heart disease. One in 30 dies of breast cancer.
African American women are more likely than other groups of women to die from heart disease.

Heart disease is the #1 killer for Latina/Hispanic women in the U.S. (High rates of diabetes, lack of exercise and obesity put this group at a higher risk for heart disease).

Women’s heart disease risk starts to rise in middle age.

About 3 million American women have had a heart attack.

Two-thirds of American women who have had a heart attack don’t make a full recovery.

Nearly two-thirds of American women who die suddenly of a heart attack had no prior symptoms.

Americans can lower their risk of heart disease by as much as 82 percent just by leading a healthy lifestyle.

Only 20 percent of women consider heart disease to be their own greatest health risk.

If you have heart disease or know someone that does, the National Wear Red Day website has some great fact sheets focusing on women with heart disease. Also, if you want to get one or a bunch of those cute, red dress pins, go to the National Wear Red Day website to order them.

Like breast cancer, this is a very important issue to me because it hits very close to home. In 2000, my mother suffered a mild heart attack and had to receive an angioplasty to reopen her clogged heart arteries. She was and to some extent still is on several different types of medication to keep her heart “in check.” Like many women suffering from heart problems, she has to take aspirin everyday for the rest of her life, in addition to exercising regularly, eating healthy and reducing stress. A small price to pay for having a longer and healthier life. But as we all know, making significant life changes is not easy and often a challenge no matter how healthy we want to be. Needless to say, my mother has her moments of weakness where cheesecake is a must have, but she has not had a recurring attack. Which is an absolute blessing!

The fact sheet I suggested above discusses medication and is important to read if you have heart disease or know someone who does. I say this because my mother suffered from so many different types of symptoms (i.e. depression, bruising, weight gain) as a result of the medication, that it became frustrating to her. Who wants to take medication when it causes you other problems? I urge you to ask as many questions as you want with your physician. If you don’t understand something tell them. Remember, you are your best health advocate!

My mother and I will both be wearing red on Friday, February 1st in honor of all women and their families affected by heart disease. I hope you will do the same, because not one of us is truly exempt from heart problems or heart disease.
