Hello Disorderites,

The beginning of a new week and the sun shone this morning and I saw Edgar the Cat and we played in the leaves, he clawed my tights and left catty hairs all down my legs which I picked off on the Tube. I want a cat. I really do. But I want Edgar most but he belongs to someone, though I am sorely tempted to lay a trail of tuna and chicken all the way to my door, then snatch him. Is that unlawful? Oh wait, have I ever cared much about the law? Ummmmmm. For the purposes of whacking myself in a compromising position, I shall just ignore that question.

I watched the last of Being Human last night, well, for this series. I think the main thing keeping me glued is the undeniably gorgeous presence of Mitchell. Since ‘Demons’ has so miserably failed to live up to some British-made supernatural fun, this is possibly the only other contender (and no, Living’s Most Haunted doesn’t count!). The moody cinematography is handled well and the script is almost punchy (though it’s a long way off the near-genius of Buffy, which is the marker of all things teen-weird), though last night the werewolf effects were remarkably hilarious. Not much progression on An American Werewolf in London, which was just as plasticine-y and like, 30 years ago. And while Underworld is truly diabolical, the werewolves are nicely vile. Clearly, BBC3 aint BBC£ in the special effects dept.! But nice to see them trying. It’s just that it’s a constant source of disbelief that the US has come up with Supernatural, Medium, Buffy/Angel, American Gothic, The Twilight Zone, X Files… and we get ummmmm, ok, insert something here and don’t say Doctor Who when you were a kid cos we all know we hid behind the counch when we were five. The most fun British TV has had was the recent Whitechapel two-parter. Yawn. Please tell me what I’ve been missing…. I am a terrestrial girl for the most part.

Is it me or does Corden & Horne, vice versa, look so painfully UNFUNNY that I would rather sit through re-runs of, oh, I don’t know, this… (without the weird voiceover). All together.. Drazic Drazic Drazic!!!!

Oh, and has Rivers turned up in Neighbours looking a bit weird. I only recognised him by his nose….

I am so glad it’s getting warmer because it’s been a distressing winter once more with the Ballad of the Solitary Glove in full swing. I was considering beginning a pix gallery of gloves that were lost and abandoned and maybe setting up a respite home for them; like bringing in lots of mannequin hands to put them on so they felt like they had a purpose in life once more rather than just being swept away by heartless street cleaners. Giving them bracelets and watches to wear. A goddamn samaritan, that’s me.

Tomorrow night will see me down at In Case of Fire, one of the strongest rock bands for 2009, and will try and see if I can catch a cheeky interview as well that will be stuff and nonsense. I’m sure they’ll be thrilled since I sent them a rather gushy MySpace message where I was delightfully sweet but I spose they are going, ummm, who is this person???? Well, it’s not long….

I hope y’all are following us on Twitter…. www.twitter.com/disordermag. Hell yeah, cos you can’t have too many updates in life. At this point I am trying to write this AND find a good place to drink in Noho cos I am sick of Soho. Jeez, listen to me. But I just can’t handle it anymore. It’s plain old nasty. I say that with my best NAAAAAAsty Janet Jackson inflection.

I want to see Franklyn. Don’t I? It looks better than it will be. That much I realise. Daaaaamn.

My god, my brain jumps around. Having re-read this, I realise there is no rhyme or reason to my thought patterns. It’s like watching a frog on acid. Hop hop spaz out hop. Niiice.

Over and out! xx

I do love a bad boy

It’s pretty clear, based on its title, that this movie is set in a restaurant, and it’s even clearer that it’s an Italian restaurant when you look at the soundtrack: Its bread and butter (or pasta and olive oil) is arias from Puccini and Verdi. And big arias they are, too–so well-known that they are opera’s versions of chartbusting pop hits: Verdi’s “La donna mobile” from Rigoletto (in a recent rendition by young tenor Joseph Calleja); Puccini’s “O mio babbino caro” from Gianni Schicchi and “Un bel d vedremo” from Madama Butterfly (both sung by Renata Tebaldi). And, of course, Pavarotti serves up a couple of hearty main courses with “Cielo e mar” and “Nessun dorma.” The Italian mood is also reflected in contributions from Paolo Conte (his Gypsy-swing and bilingual “Via Con Me”) and Michael Bubl’s cover of the 1950s Latin pop hit “Sway” (which was popularized in the US by Dean Martin, born Dino Paul Crocetti–does that count as an Italian connection?). The album also includes three instrumental cues: Conrad Pope’s “Truffles and Quail,” and Philip Glass’s low-key “Zoe and Kate Watch Video” and “Zoe Goes to the Restaurant.” Liz Phair’s “Count on My Love” inexplicably brings up the rear, but hey, it’s a pretty great pop song (from Phair’s underrated 2005 album Somebody’s Miracle), so it’s nice to see it get more exposure. –Elisabeth Vincentelli

ORIGINAL MUSIC WRITTEN BY ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE PHILIP GLASS ALSO INCLUDES SONGS PERFORMED BY LUCIANO PAVAROTTI, MICHAEL BUBL, LIZ PHAIR AND MANY MORE! From Academy Award nominated director Scott Hicks (Shine), comes the new film NO RESERVATIONS, the remake of foreign film Mostly Martha. Master chef Kate Armstrong (Academy Award winner Catherine Zeta-Jones–Chicago) lives her life like she runs her kitchen at a trendy Manhattan eatery–with a no-nonsense intensity that both captivates and intimidates everyone around her. Kate’s perfectionist nature is put to the test when she “inherits” her nine-year-old niece Zoe (Academy Award nominee Abigail Breslin–Little Miss Sunshine), while contending with a brash new sous-chef who joins her staff. High-spirited and freewheeling, Nick Palmer (Golden Globe nominee Aaron Eckhart–Thank You For Smoking) couldn’t be more different from Kate, yet the chemistry between them is undeniable. Warner Bros. presents NO RESERVATIONS opening wide on July 27th. The Decca soundtrack will be released on July 24th and features original music written by Academy Award nominee Philip Glass (Notes on a Scandal, The Hours, Kundun), mixed with Italian arias performed by Luciano Pavarotti, Renata Tebaldi, Joan Sutherland, Carlo Bergonzi and Joseph Calleja as well as contemporary songs performed by Michael Bubl, Liz Phair, Paolo Conte and Ray Gelato.

The Fringe began in familiar form yesterday. We ate unpleasant sandwiches on an adequate bus, and then runwalked up the Royal Mile in a slightly desperate attempt to get to the Underbelly on time for our first appointment. The ladything requires that we arrive several hours early for any event, while I prefer to cut it so fine that we miss it entirely, but somehow we muddle through.

Actually, the Fringe didn’t really start yesterday: officially, it runs from Sunday 3rd to Monday 25th. In practice, however, 90% of the performers will tend to traipse up a week early, flogging cheap tickets (Thursday, Friday) and 2 for 1 deals (Sunday, Monday) in order to build up a bit of momentum.

This leads to a slightly weird atmosphere, where the full programme has pretty much kicked off and you have to wade through the Royal Mile neck-deep in flyers, yet when you eventually get to the Underbelly, it’s just about empty.

<img class="size-full wp-image-90" src="http://goodmeeting.wordpress.com/files/2008/08/prettylightsintheunderbelly1.jpg" alt="The Underbelly, redecorated since 2007. Ignore the ghostly figure, because his presence undermines my point.

When I lived in Edinburgh, I would occasionally wish that the Underbelly would be open all year round. It’s such a cool, weird space. It’s nestled in amongst a bunch of other places, so you can’t really get a measure of its size or shape, and then inside it’s like a little labyrinth. It’s like it grew into the bits between other buildings.

In fact, in an article from 2003 the Guardian describes it as “a warren of caves and corridors originally built as the vaults of the Bank of Scotland.” Hell yes. I think I would have built that into a theme, but instead it’s a crumbling, gloriously tatty old place that looks like it’s been painted by freshers. You could imagine a bunch of hip students squatting there for the rest of the year, a bit like the kids in Heartbreak High who lived in that converted warehouse.

Even more brilliantly, the article claims that they initially opened up the top floor, and that “each year they have descended further into the vaults.” There’s nothing I can say that can out-gothic that sentence.

My enjoyment of Underbelly has been somewhat curtailed by unpredictable weather in the torrentospher

My enjoyment of Underbelly has been somewhat curtailed by unpredictable weather in the torrentosphere. Having tasted all that episodes 1-10 could shower me with, the preview disc precipitation dried up, and I find myself languishing in the barren, empty weeks before broadcast catches up with internet. At least until somebody ups E11-13.

So in the meantime I’ve been trying to satiate my hunger for sweary antipodean crime drama with other stuff. Several of the news reports about Underbelly mentioned Blue Murder, often in most complimentary terms, so I got me a copy of that.

It’s about the relationship between corrupt New South Wales cop Roger ‘The Dodger’ Rogerson and violent crim Neddy Smith, and intersects at various points with some of the Victorian underworld stuff which Underbelly is about. It’s much less glossy, though, and focuses more on sweaty beer halls and downmarket Chinese restaurants rather than on titty bars and clubs (as noted elsewhere).

The leads are played by Tony Martin (no, not that one) and Richard Roxburgh. The former is most convincing as the brutal Neddy, looking like he’s been assembled from cheap cuts out the butcher’s window, whilst the latter, transmitting hardness through his eyes, is better known to UK audiences as the distinctly non-Australian Sherlock Holmes in recent Beeb remakes.

Meanwhile, bridging the gap between 1995’s Blue Murder (blocked from broadcast in NSW till 2001) and 2008’s Underbelly (blocked from broadcast in Victoria for the foreseeable future) is none other than Alex Dimitriades. You know, Nick from The Heartbreak Kid and Heartbreak High. Moody Greek heart throb type chap. Hint of a lisp, masked with broodiness. Anyway, in BM he plays Warren Lanfranchi, a crook whom Neddy must betray in order to earn his free pass from The Dodger; whilst in Underbelly he gets to proper gurn as unhinged hitman ‘The Runner’.

Anyway, after enjoying Blue Murder I went off in search of yet more dirty detectives down under. I’ve still not found me a copy of The Clean Machine (starring Steve Bisley), which I remember watching years back and enjoying, but I’m hopeful. I’ve also got my ears out for Police State, Joh’s Jury and Police Crop (all Ian David-penned TV movies, like BM), and also Scales Of Justice (which was helmed by BM director Michael Jenkins). If you can help, please let I know

Back to the HonkWatch pic: Neddy loses his guts after going mental and battering shit out of a truck driver. Diamond geezers indeed, those old school villains. You could leave your front door unlocked, they loved their mothers, never grassed, only hurt their own, blah blah blah…
