The third Final Fantasy full-length and the first for Domino, it is the product of nine months of work in four countries. Heartland is a fully orchestral record, designed to exist simultaneously as an album, a 45-minute piece of orchestral music and a set of songs for looped violin and voice. Heartland will be released by Domino on January 12, 2010. Owen Pallett explains:

“The songs themselves form a narrative concerning a farmer named Lewis and the fictional world of Spectrum. The songs are one-sided dialogues with Lewis, a young, ultra-violent farmer, speaking to his creator.”

“The album was compositionally modeled upon the principles of electronic music. The principles of analog synthesis informing symphonic writing, like an inversion of a Tomita record. These songs, too, were designed to be as dense with polyphony as the Final Fantasy live shows can become. While writing it, I kept an image in my head of putting so many notes on the page that the paper turned black.”

“This record encapsulates a whole year of work for me, and was difficult to see through, but immensely proud of the results. I hope you enjoy it.”
As well as his solo work and with Les Mouches, Pallett has written more grandiose string arrangements for Beirut, Fucked Up, The Last Shadow Puppets and Arcade Fire that have propelled these bands to success. While Pallett has always been seen as the mastermind working behind the scenes, rumour has it that the forthcoming Final Fantasy record, Heartland, has the immediacy of the records he’s worked on with other bands, and is set to thrust Pallett into the limelight.

With the record nearing its 11th January release date, Domino have given us the taste of what the record might sound like with lead single, Lewis Takes Action. The Lewis from the song is supposedly central to the record’s theme, which Pallett describes (via Pitchfork), “The songs are one-sided dialogues with Lewis, a young, ultra-violent farmer, speaking to his creator.” This sounds fascinating and I’m positive Heartland will be the first great record of 2010.

WEEK 8 PREVIEW
The evergreen league will be eight (8) weeks old this weekend, 20 teams, ten venues and ten games. After 7 round of matches the ‘new-look’ Nigeria Premier league has already recorded a ‘whooping – anyway, from the Nigerian perspective’ four (4) away wins, Gombe Utd FC 1 – 2 Niger Tornadoes FC, Wikki Tourists 3 – 4 Kwara United FC, Sharks FC 2-3 Enyimba Int’l FC, Kaduna United 1-2 Kwara United FC.

Kwara united looks the better team in the league now, after the form log reveal that the Afonja warriors have picked maximum points in there last three matches of which two of them have been on the road.

To help avoid controversy, the league’s worst team is sitting rather conveniently on the base of the 20-team log as they are on the form log. Their latest loss as ever was the mid-week 2-1 loss to fellow struggler and defending champion Bayelsa united in Oghara (home of Bayelsa united). Three draws, three (3) points from 6 games describe what they are up to in the league. This is Khadiri Ikhana’s Sharks.
No, they are a team from Port-Harcourt, does that mean one come and the other goes down?

Ten matches were decided in various stadia in match day 7, of course the most spectacular and jaw-breaking match was at the Kaduna Township Stadium where ever-improving Kwara United extended their unbeaten run to four matches 3wins and 1draw, of those 3wins, two away wins were recorded which sees them move into the top four.

Also, the Nigeria El-Classico ended in a scoreless draw between ENYIMBA Int’l FC and Heartland FC although it was a match played with high intensity yet it surprised both fans that with all chances created the scoreline still remained goalless at full time. This result meant ENYIMBA will eventually surrender the lead to teams playing mid-week. This was confirmed as both Kano pillars and In-form Warri Wolves both picked up maximum point at home (mid-week), putting them on 2nd and 1st of the log respectively, even with a game in hand each, and Enyimba thus dropping to third on the table.

Six games will be decided on Saturday and the remaining four on Sunday. On Saturday in the ancient Ibadan city Shooting stars fc of Ibadan at the Liberty stadium will be welcoming Ocean boys of brass. 3sc were two-nil losers away to former leaders Lobi stars of Markurdi while their opponent were superior to their flying visitors-cum-opponent (Rangers) albeit by a lone goal.

In Ilorin, Kwara united will want to consolidate on their present run of form when Lobi stars comes visiting. With both teams sharing a lane on the 20-team express log only separated by Kwara’s superior goal for (9 as against Lobi’s 6) , this battle promises to be exciting. Both teams have played 7 games, each winning 3, drawing 3, losing 1 each and also on a +3 goal difference. They’ll stop being identical this weekend.

Embattled and Top from the bottom Sharks FC from the Garden city will welcome 7th placed team Sunshine stars of Akure hoping that they can for once see them self in a non-20 th position this season provided fellow back bencher- Gombe united fail to amass maximum point against Enyimba.

Enyimba the only team still unbeaten in the league travels north to Gombe united knowing fully well that another away win this weekend may see them go back to the summit of the Nigeria league as both Warri wolves and Kano pillars to will be on the road too.

At the Ahmadu Bello stadium, Kaduna (one of the stadia for the just completed U-17 world cup), Ranchers bees will be playing host to Dolphins FC. Ranchers bees have gathered 5 out of there 6 league points this season at home while their opposite side (Dolphin) have just managed to pick a point on the road this season.
Did I hear you say you can predict the score line?

And finally on Saturday, the partially Northern derby sees Niger Tornadoes playing host to former champions Kano pillars. Kano pillars played in the mid week, won and moved to 2nd on the table. Kano pillars netted 5 goals and conceded 2 in just under 7 days, while Niger tornadoes were 1-nil losers at Gateway united last weekend.

On Sunday, Embattled Heartland will want to put behind their very poor run of form when Wikki Tourist of Bauchi comes knocking. Heartland were 2-3 losers at Wolves last Wednesday and also managed to pick a point at Heartland last weekend. Things have not gone there way since their painful defeat to TP Mazembe in the final of the 2009 CAF Champions league.

In other games on Sunday “whipping boys” Zamfara united having let in 13 goals against there own 4 scored host fellow northern team, Kaduna united in a stern Northern derby and even more-stern struggler derby. Both teams have 7 points and occupy the 15th and 16th position on the log.

Rangers welcome leaders (before the Saturday games) to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu. Warri wolves with two wins on a row (in a space of 4 days) are far a contrast to Rangers. The number of goals scored by the teams is also far contrasting as Wolves have netted 12 times this season while their host Rangers have just managed to score 7 goals, 4 of this goals were at home. Rangers have not dropped any point at home this season while Warri Wolves have drawn once and lost once in their two games on the road. The game promises to be exciting.

And finally for the weekend, Bayelsa united at the Oghara township stadium play host to Gateway united FC. Despite the fact that they are aiming to defend the championship they won last season, the team is still short of strategies to take them even outside the relagation zone. A narrow 2-1 victory over rock bottom Sharks mid-week made sure they moved two places up and 17th on the table. They’ve been a rather perfect team at home this season (as they’ve ever been in the top flight) dropping no point at home and letting in just only 1 goal. Gateway were 1-nil winners last weekend at home against Niger Tornadoes.

Is Sarah Palin’s tour to promote her new book part of a canny strategy for 2012, a plan of which Sam Walton would have approved? J. Robert Smith at American Thinker believes it may be so, as her tour takes her to those places the elites ignore:

What’s notable about Sarah Palin’s book tour, which starts midweek, is where she’s not going. She’s not going to L.A. or New York, Boston or San Francisco. She’s going smack dab to the middle of the country. Fly-over country, liberals call it. And it’s a shrewd move, not only in selling books, but positioning herself for a presidential run in 2012, if she chooses.

It’s a strategy right out of the late Sam Walton’s playbook: go where there’s demand and the competition ain’t. Walton, who could have run and won political campaigns, built Walmart into the behemoth it is today by opening his discount stores in small towns in the heartland, towns that the eight-hundred pound gorilla K-Mart ignored.

Walton conquered the discount retail category from the heartland out. He didn’t so much as clobber K-Mart as steal a march on it. Palin may just prove that a heartland strategy does more than sell blenders and books. It’s the foundation for winning a national election.

And it isn’t just a political version of the Sam Walton Way: Smith points out the places she will visit are home to large numbers of Jacksonians, traditional Democrats who tend to be culturally conservative and aggressive about national security. This same group, also known as “Reagan Democrats,” formed a large part of the winning coalition in 1980 and the subsequent Republican dominance. Palin resonates with this group, and her tour and media appearances give her a chance also to repair her reputation (savaged by the major media, which acted as a propaganda arm for the DNC) with politically independent affluent suburbanites who, polls show, are deserting the Democrats and Obama in droves – witness the recent election results in New Jersey and Virginia.

Can a “from the heartland out” strategy win in 2012? Perhaps. Politics is the art of coalition-building, and right now there are large segments of the nation who do not feel their needs are being served or are actively being harmed by the political elites. Sarah Palin already has shown she can run an effective “anti-insiders” campaign, though it remains to be seen if can work on a national level as it did for Reagan – or if she’ll even decide to run in the first place.

Regardless, ignoring the big cities and staking your claim in “flyover country” is a strategy that would have made Sam Walton smile.

As I traveled around the country, covering all those miles I traveled before, there was one thing

As I traveled around the country, covering all those miles I traveled before, there was one thing–well actually more than one but one is all I will cover for now—that became clear pretty quickly. You can’t do certain things over! Now, I don’t mean that there is anything wrong going to the same places again, that is how you start to get under the surface. It is just that if you think you can replicate a specific experience or photograph, it just isn’t going to happen. Forget the physical changes or whatever, I think it is just that there are certain energies, creative and otherwise, that come together in a unique way at one unique time. So, no, I am not going to get all metaphysical on you right now, but the saving grace of trying to do such foolish things is that they can at least open up doors to new experiences.

Photo with car moved out of way

A week into my trip, I came across a town that I remembered because of a singular landmark, a painted ad for the old Victor phonograph, with the dog and all. When I had been here in 2006, it was hot, hazy, humid and mid-day, mid summer. I actually took a few photos but none were of much consequence and my assistant and I moved our attention back to the job.

This time, the light was much better and so I thought I would stop. I just like old painted signs/ads like this and have to fight not to stop when I see them. Of course, there was a car parked right under it. But, hey, I just wanted to get a shot of it, one that was better than my earlier attempts.

It was Sunday and the town was pretty empty. Well, actually, there really isn’t much of a town here in any case. Just a few buildings that don’t speak to much commercial activity. But, of course, there was a bar. That was one of those other things that became clear early on, that if there was nothing else in these little towns, there was at least a bar or three!

Pam outside the "Just One More"

As I was shooting the sign, I heard a little voice coming from the bar behind me: “want me to move that?” referring to the car under the sign.. I turned around to see Pam standing there. “That would be awesome!” I responded with a big smile. “I think the keys are probably in it…it’s not mine…but I know whose it is.” She got in, moved the car and I thanked her and introduced myself as she moved back towards the bar. Of course, she was going to be photographed. Everyone I met was going to be photographed, my rule. Like many, she balked while she got ready for me to photograph her and, in the process, invited me in for a beer. I hesitated because I was running so late, but a beer sounded good and I really wanted to go inside anyway. As I started to lock my car, I stopped and looked sheepishly at Pam, “I don’t need to lock my car around here, do I?”. She looked at me, “Nope, not around here”.

Biff remembered me shooting the trains

As I walked in, the screen door slammed behind me with a sound that just seemed right. Pam announced my name loudly to all those who were inside. Apparently, I had been the topic of conversation before Pam came out. I think she had been teased that if she went outside, I would probably want to take her picture. Across the bar, Biff asked me my name again and just as I said it, he said “I met you before!”. He went on to tell me it had to do with me shooting the train, he thought maybe 15 years ago. I told him I was through here 3 years ago shooting trains and he insisted that we had met. I pulled up a stool at the old wooden bar next to Pam, who had just moved back to her seat beside Mitch. Biff continued to describe the possibilities of where we met.

My beer came and as we were talking, Mitch mentioned that it was too bad I hadn’t been there a couple of hours earlier. Apparently, he had his tractors out, 3 restored John Deere tractors from the 50’s. Then, he thought about it and said he still had the shop open and we could go over and pull them out if I wanted. You know, the reality was that if I had been there two hours earlier, I would have missed them, as his shop was not there on Main Street. As we were talking, I remembered that I hadn’t even taken my photograph of the sign. I excused myself for a minute and ran outside and got off a few shots. I don’t think Pam would have cared, but it just somehow seemed rude to not have done it after she had been so nice and moved the car. When I came back in, we finished up our beers at a leisurely pace, continuing to talk and laugh about this and that. Then we all, Biff, Mitch, Pam and I, headed over to see the tractors. As I tried to settle my tab, I was told Pam had taken care of it.

Mitch on his restored '56 Standard

Mitch’s shop had apparently been a “sewing factory” at one time, probably back when the town was in its prime. As I walked in, there were the tractors all backed in against the far wall. Two were old “standards” while one was a “row crop” (I sound like I know what I am talking about, don’t I!). Mitch pulled out the ’56 that he and his son had restored. There is really such a wonderful sound that comes from these old tractor engines, not like anything else and in some strange way, very soothing. Although he was willing to pull out the other two, I said I needed to get on the road. It was getting late, and I needed to find a place to stay for the night. Motels aren’t really that easy to find out here and it might be several towns before one appeared.

As I was leaving, Mitch showed a massive amount of courage and offered a Texan homemade Illinois salsa! I packed it away in the car for when I got home. Surprisingly, it was really pretty good, but my wife just couldn’t bring herself to eat “Illinois Salsa?”—well, she finally decided to when there was just one dip left!

Richard L. Coglon, President and CEO of Heartland commented: “We are extremely pleased to have someone of Phil’s calibre on our team. His operational talents and, drills
, proven ability to grow production will be key factors as Heartland continues to develop its Kansas CBM lands.”

Operational Update:

The company has, drills
, received its permit, drills
, from the Kansas Corporate commission to begin flaring gas from the various, drills
, Engelke wells in order to establish gas rates and inflow pressures. Well site equipment to allow measurement of gas rates and pressures and flaring of gas has been installed on the Engelke wells and production,, drills
, drills
, is scheduled to begin early August, drills
, .

Drilling Update:

The Company has completed the drilling of its previously announced three 5-well pilot programs. The program consisted of 15 new CBM wells and (3) three salt water disposal wells, drills
, . In addition the company has expanded its initial Engelke 5 well pilot program with the drilling of (2) two additional CBM wells. Despite increased well site material prices and contractor costs,, drills
, the greater number of wells drilled resulted in a, drills
, higher level of efficiency. As a consequence the program’s costs remain within the established budget. Completion operations on the first of the new wells, drills
, began on July 31st, 2004 and are expected to continue through the third quarter of 2004, drills
, . As wells are completed they will be, drills
, immediately, drills
, tied in to water disposal wells to begin the dewatering process.

Acreage Update:

Heartland now has 252,000 acres under lease and is not actively pursuing additional lands. Heartland has concentrated its leasing activities through a fairway containing a thick section of lower Cherokee coals, which are, drills
, the primary producing coals throughout the basin. Development is expected to take place using an 80 acre spacing.

Finance:

As at July 31, 2004 the Company had working capital of approximately $6.5 million of which $2 mil has been allocated for the completion of the recently drilled, drills
, 17 new production wells. The balance of the funds will be used for ongoing development of the Company’s Forest City Basin Project and for general working capital.

General:

Heartland is an emerging coalbed methane gas company focusing on its substantial acreage, drills
, position in the Forest City basin in the state of Kansas,, drills
, drills
, . Using, drills
, its proprietary mapping of the area and results from earlier drilling, Heartland has acquired a dominant position in what is believed to be the, drills
, thickest part of the coal fairway in the Forest City Basin.

Heartland has acquired leasehold, drills
, interests in approximately 252,000 acres in the Forest City Basin. Since Heartland initiated its CBM project in 2001 the Forest City/Cherokee basin fairway has become the subject of increased activity in both leasing and, drills
, drilling. At this time, several producing coalbed methane fields are located in the southern and eastern parts of the fairway and there are a, drills
, number of pilot programs underway throughout the basin.

The Company has not received any update on its Amex listing application at this time. We will continue to monitor and report on the application process as it proceeds.

Thursday was an interesting day. Alternately rewarding, perplexing, frustrating, cost-effective and

Thursday was an interesting day. Alternately rewarding, perplexing, frustrating, cost-effective and chilly. There was an audition that wasn’t quite an audition, an interesting conversation, a terrific meeting, a good self-tape and Fall-ish conditions. Interesting.

The True Blood audition that wasn’t an audition.
Unless, it was.

Yesterday was a pre-read with Libby Goldstein. For the uninitiated, a pre-read is when you sit down with the casting director in a very informal, relaxed setting and work the audition scene. It’s an opportunity for them to figure out if you’re what the projects producers are looking for. In Toronto, the pre-read practice doesn’t exist for reasons that I cannot explain. (That’s a topic for another time, I think.)

I smacked the pre-read around. It was super.

Chad McCord and I had worked the scene earlier that morning and even added in a not-so-subtle hint at the characters supernatural power. Fans of the show would have been pleased.

When we finished, Libby sat me down for one of the all-time great “but” sentences in casting room history: “That was really good… and you really got the accent, I like the accent… but you don’t look anything like (name redacted) and Alan (Ball) really wants someone who looks like him.”

Oh.

The new series regular for season three is the brother of another series regular. Ideally, the show’s creator would like to find somebody who looks a lot like him. If that changes, I’m back in. If my agents can coerce casting and production into giving me a shot, I’m back in. Neither scenario is particularly unlikely. The finished product of True Blood is unconventional and I’d imagine that there casting methods are as well. More importantly, Libby will back up my acting chops if the producers are hesitant to depart from their initial vision.

For the short term… I don’t know. For the long term (considering I’ve officially moved here) I’m more than a little happy that Libby Goldstein is a fan.

We also got into a protracted conversation about the television show Copper. Libby knew exactly who I was because – apparently – for three weeks this past spring I was going to be cast in Copper. Then, I wasn’t cast. Not casting me was a mistake. I would have annihilated that role. And I don’t care if you’re not supposed to say that. If I can admit to crying on the phone like Eric The Vampire right before Godric lights on fire, than I’m allowed to say that I would have been awesome on Copper. Because I would have been. It all comes back to believing in yourself.

What, a, pre-read.

(It doesn’t count on the audition meter. If I rock a Louisiana accent in front of Alan Ball, then it counts.)

The top floor at ABC and pangs of 0-1 Visa regret.

I need an 0-1 Visa. Can’t get one on my own because I can’t afford it. S*it.

Had a general meeting yesterday with Sandi Logan, VP of Network and Studio Casting for ABC. Sandi is lovely. Everything is lovely. (I think I might pick some flowers after I’m done writing.)

After seven full weeks in Hollywood, I’m really starting to settle in. I’ve met a lot of people. I’ve auditioned (and beat out) actors that I recognize from film and tv. I’ve tested… I even absorbed a punch from the industry that hit me square in the testicles.

I’m becoming difficult to rattle. Don’t get me wrong, I’m nowhere close to unflappable. I’ll still flap. But when somebody like Sandi Logan sits me down in her office (with a beautiful view of the Burbank skyline) and tells me she wants to “put me on ABC programming”, I believe her. Why shouldn’t I? The tenor of this website is seeping into the outward aspects of my personality. For twenty minutes, I put myself on the line in front of Sandi. Sandi responded. Good meeting. Also, interesting…

The 0-1 Visa is becoming a bit of a sore spot. Here’s why:

The natural path for me in Hollywood would be to book “top of the show” guest star roles. Like, the patient on House, or a prominent player in a Lost flashback / flash forward. Those auditions happen all the time. You go in, nail the audition and get cast later that day. The casting director has a lot more autonomy in these instances and thus, what you do in the room really matters. Moreover, networks and studios are probably more inclined to take a flier on somebody (relatively) new to the scene in a smaller (albeit important) role. Moreover², my resume is littered with guest-starring roles. Heartland, ReGenesis, Da Kink, Blue Mountain State and Flashpoint.

For those roles, you need an 0-1 Visa. The turn around time between casting and shooting is too tight for the studio to get one for you. Without an 0-1, they wont audition you. (Conversely, if you get a series regular, feature film or pilot, the studio will sponsor you.)

So… I’m going to stick it out through Pilot Season. By that point, I’ll either have an 0-1 (because too much is going right not to get one) or I’ll have booked an excellent Canadian project (because too much is going right not to get one) and I’ll buy my own.

The Self-tape.

Threw myself on tape for a project that’s shooting in Winnipeg late November through the middle of December. My agent thought the tape was delightful. Winnipeg. Winter. I think I’m going to go for a hike.

(I love what I do… I love what I do… I love what I do…)

This was – by far – the most rewarding week in PTABB’s short history. Thank you all.

Have a wonderful weekend and Happy Halloween.

EDIT: A good friend sent me this quote on Tuesday evening, post-Melrose, while I was drinking… by myself.

It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.

That’s a beauty from Ernest Hemingway. Mr. Blair, thank you.

Dear B.G.:

Has Glenda Jackson returned to the screen? The last I heard she had retired to work full time as the Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of Hampstead and Highgate in the London. But I recently caught a glimpse of her, or at least I think it was her, in a movie trailer with Daniel Day Lewis. What is the movie? And why haven’t I read about her comeback? -- Curious in Kelowna

Dear C.I.K.:

Ms Jackson is still lobbying for her British constituents and as far as I know has no immediate plans to return to the screen. The actress with the striking Touch

Of Class bob in that movie trailer is the inimitable Dame Judi Dench, who may be channeling Glenda, for all we know. And you’re right, it is Daniel Day Lewis. The movie is directort Rob (Chicago) Marshall’s screen version of the Broadway musical Nine, which of course was the stage version of Federico Fellini’s 8½. So Day Lewis is playing a role originated on screen by Marcello Mastroianni and on stage by Raul Julia (and most recently Antonio Banderas.) And in the movie the key women in his life are played by Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Kate Hudson and Ms. Dench. Anticipated as a spectacular gift to fans of movie musicals, Nine is scheduled to open here on Christmas Day.

Dear B.K.:

I won’t be surprised if Divisadero eventually reaches the big screen. In the meantime, the Necessary Angel theatre company, director Daniel Brooks and

Next weekend Liane Balaban, Maggie Huculak, Tom McCamus and Amy Rutherford are set to appear in three work-in-progress presentations of When My Name Was Anna, directed by Brooks, at Theatre Passe Muraille’s Mainspace.
Dear H.I.R.,

Sorry, you lose. 10 Million Miles is one of several Broadway shows, including Hairspray and South Pacific, in which Matthew Morrison appeared. But he did have a Timberlake look about him in that show, so don’t beat yourself up too badly. Morrison, who is also a rapper and a beat box hoofer, loves performing on stage for a live audience. But he’s equally passionate about Glee, and with good reason. “More people saw the pilot of Glee,” he notes, “than saw me in the entire ten years I was on Broadway.”

Dear B.G.:

Dear P.C.T.A.:

Yeah, it does get confusing at times. Fear not, you haven’t missed the boat – or the show, for that matter. The 24th Annual Gemini Awards Broadcast Gala is just two weeks away, and will be broadcast live on Global and Showcase at 9pm
