Nothing is better than cooking at home and knowing what ingredients you are putting into your food.

Nothing is better than cooking at home and knowing what ingredients you are putting into your food. Being a vegan living in Newark, Ohio, eating out is not my favorite thing to do. Majority of the restaurants in Heath and Newark are not vegan-friendly. Therefore, cooking has become one of my favorite pastimes. I have come to realize that it is a blessing in disguise because I started to experiment different types of vegetables, fruits, grains, beans and herbs in my cooking. Strangely enough, my choice of food has actually broadened. Being a vegan is about discovery, not deprivation!

I shared a photo of my pan-roasted Brussels spouts on my Facebook profile last night and several people have asked me about the recipe. So here I am sharing what I did last night. I received a recipe from Peggy, one of the Ohio Green Specialists members, and decided to make it into a vegan version with some adaptation to the ingredients and procedure. Both vegan and non-vegan version of the recipes are posted here. My version is for one pound of Brussel sprouts, which is what you usually get in a bag in Meijer. This is good for four servings. Hope you will enjoy this dish!

My vegan version of the recipe:

1 lb. Brussels sprouts, cleaned, rinsed and halved lengthwise

1 Tbsp. olive oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 Tbsp. Earth Balance Natural Buttery Spread

1 Tsp. dried thyme

1/2 Tsp. dried rosemary

1/4 Tsp. sea salt

1 Tbsp. Cabernet Sauvignon or red wine of your choice

Mix the herbs and salt in a small bowl and set aside.

In a large frying pan, cook Brussels sprouts, uncovered, for 3 minutes in lightly-salted boiling water. Only use enough water to cover the Brussels sprouts and toss them occasionally. Drain well.

Dry the same large frying pan, add olive oil and then garlic when the oil is heated up. Cook and stir the garlic in medium heat until they are browned.

Add the buttery spread. When the buttery spread is nearly melted, carefully arrange the sprouts, cut-sides down, in the frying pan. Top with the herb mixture. Increase heat to medium high. Cook, uncovered, until the sprouts are well-browned.

Turn off heat. Add the red wine on the frying pan (not on the Brussels sprouts). Quickly toss to distribute flavors.

—————————————————–

This is the original recipe I received, which Peggy adapted from the one in the Better Homes & Gardens Magazine, Nov 2009:

2 lb. Brussels sprouts, cleaned, rinsed and halved lengthwise

1 Tbsp. rice oil (or Olive oil)

2 cloves garlic, minced (or 2 tsp. minced jarred garlic)

3 Tbsp. butter (or flavorful nut oil)

½ bunch fresh thyme (about 10 springs) – or 2 tsp. dried

1 large sprig fresh rosemary, halved (or 1 tsp. dried)

2 tsp. fennel seeds

1 ¼ tsp. Kosher salt or 1 tsp. regular salt (or omit, to taste)

1 Tbsp. sherry

Mix the herbs and salt (if using) in a small bowl and set aside.

In a large saucepan, cook Brussels sprouts, uncovered, for 3 minutes in enough lightly-salted boiling water to cover; drain well. Pat dry with paper towels or clean kitchen towels.

Place a very large heavy skillet or sauté pan over high heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Reduce heat to medium. Add oil and garlic; cook and stir 2 minutes. (If using jarred minced garlic, no need to cook the garlic in this step – just add.) Add half the butter.

Increase heat to medium high. When butter is nearly melted, carefully arrange half the sprouts, cut-sides down, in the hot skillet. (Use a splatter screen to avoid major splatters.) Top with half the herb mixture. Cook, uncovered, 3 to 4 minutes, until the sprouts are well-browned.

Remove sprouts from pan. Repeat with remaining butter, sprouts, herb/salt mixture.

When the second batch is browned, return all the spouts to the skillet along with the sherry. Quickly toss to distribute flavors.

Experts explain green tea’s potential benefits for everything from fighting cancer to helping your heart.

By Julie Edgar
WebMD Feature

Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD

It’s difficult not to gush about green tea.

More than a decade’s worth of research about green tea’s health benefits — particularly its potential to fight cancer and heart disease — has been more than intriguing, as have limited studies about green tea’s role in lowering cholesterol, burning fat, preventing diabetes and stroke, and staving off dementia.

“I believe in green tea based on everything written about it,” says Katherine Tallmadge, RD, LD, a nutritionist and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. “Green tea, white tea, black tea — I like all of them.”

Still, real-world evidence is lacking; most of the consistent findings about green tea’s health benefits have come out of the lab.

The few large-scale human studies that have focused on green tea’s impact on heart disease and cancer are promising, but many of those were conducted in the East, where green tea is a dietary mainstay. The outcomes are likely influenced by other lifestyle factors such as high consumption of fish and soy protein, says cardiologist Nieca Goldberg, MD, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association and medical director of the New York University Women’s Heart Center.

But Goldberg agrees with other health professionals: green tea has important antioxidants and compounds that help in maintaining good health.

Green Tea’s Powerful Antioxidants

Green tea’s antioxidants, called catechins, scavenge for free radicals that can damage DNA and contribute to cancer, blood clots, and atherosclerosis. Grapes and berries, red wine, and dark chocolate also have potent antioxidants.

Because of green tea’s minimal processing — its leaves are withered and steamed, not fermented like black and oolong teas — green tea’s unique catechins, especially epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), are more concentrated.

But there’s still a question of how much green tea you need to drink to reap its health benefits. EGCG is not readily “available” to the body; in other words, EGCG is not always fully used by the body.

“We must overcome the issue of poor bioavailability [and other issues] in order to get the most out of their benefits,” says Tak-Hang Chan, PhD, professor emeritus in the department of chemistry at McGill University in Montreal. Chan has studied the use of a synthetic form of EGCG in shrinking prostate cancer tumors in mice, with success.

Green Tea vs. Cancer

Marji McCullough, ScD, RD, the American Cancer Society’s strategic director of nutritional epidemiology, says human studies haven’t yet proven what researchers like Chan have discovered in the lab: green tea’s EGCG regulates and inhibits cancer growth and kills cells that are growing inappropriately.

“Epidemiologically, one of the challenges is finding populations that drink enough green tea and have for a long time,” she says. “With cancer, it’s always difficult to find the exposure time,” or the point at which cancer cells begin to develop.

Still, it’s difficult not to be intrigued by a few human studies that have shown that drinking at least two cups of green tea daily inhibits cancer growth.

One of them, a study conducted in Japan that involved nearly 500 Japanese women with Stage I and Stage II breast cancer, found that increased green tea consumption before and after surgery was associated with lower recurrence of the cancers.

Studies in China have shown that the more green tea that participants drank, the less the risk of developing stomach cancer, esophageal cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, and colorectal cancer.

Finally, a recent analysis of 22 studies that probed the correlation between high tea consumption and reduced risk for lung cancer concluded that by increasing your daily intake of green (not black) tea by two cups may reduce the risk of developing lung cancer by 18%.

Is Green Tea Good for Your Heart?

It seems to be, but there are conflicting results of a few epidemiological studies conducted in the East and West.

In a study that involved 500 Japanese men and women, researchers found that drinking at least four cups of green tea every day may be related to the reduced severity of coronary heart disease among the male participants.

A Dutch study of more than 3,000 men and women found that the more tea consumed, the less severe the clogging of the heart’s blood vessels, especially in women.

As Goldberg suggests, lifestyle and overall diet are critical to the outcomes of these studies.

But green tea’s antioxidants are dilators, she says, because they improve the flexibility of blood vessels and make them less vulnerable to clogging — and antioxidant-rich blueberries and pomegranates do the same.

“I think people should know these are important studies, that everyday foods that are an option may actually have health benefits,” Goldberg says. “I think green tea, because of its antioxidant value, may have heart benefits, but it’s not something we regularly prescribe to people, because there isn’t as much evidence as there is in exercise’s ability to improve heart health.”

Green Tea and Weight

Green tea and its extract have been shown to fight obesity and lower LDL “bad” cholesterol — two risk factors for heart disease and diabetes — but in very limited studies. One study in the Netherlands and a study in Japan showed that green tea did both.

In the Dutch study, participants who drank caffeinated green tea lost more weight, but even those who typically drank the decaf variety saw a decrease in their waistlines and body weight. Researchers speculated that the caffeine helps with fat oxidation.

In the Japanese study, 240 men and women were given varying amounts of green tea extract for three months. Those who got the highest amount lost fat and weight and had lower blood pressure and lower LDL “bad” cholesterol.

Green Tea Straight Up

Taking weight loss supplements that contain green tea extract probably won’t hurt, unless you have liver problems.

But the best way to get the most out of green tea — even if your main goal is losing weight — is to drink it.

“Taken altogether, the evidence certainly suggests that incorporating at least a few cups of green tea every day will positively affect your health,” says Diane McKay, PhD, a Tufts University scientist who studies antioxidants. “It’s not going to cure anything and it shouldn’t be consumed as a drug, but it can complement the rest of the diet.”

McCullough bears the same reminder: eat your fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, and nuts — and go ahead, drink as much green tea as you want.

“I don’t think it can hurt to drink it. I’d focus on dietary sources rather than supplements because there are several compounds in green tea that might need to be consumed together. We just don’t know yet,” she says.

Many Thai J-Rock fans blamed Thai artists that they copied Japanese songs. In fact, they should believe in ability of Thai people, or say just, coincident or Japanese artists copy Thai things. Although one case is true, that does not mean other million cases have to be just like the first one.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Listen To the Music, please scroll down to the end of the post.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

One of my friend that I met when I just had been a J-Rock fan, always told me that a Thai band called, Giwa copies his beloved Luna Sea. I was so young, and I did believe him. I believe many things flood around world wide web. Thai J-Rock fans keep post this kind of thing up. They matched short parts of some Japanese songs and Thai songs, and they said that Thai artist copies Japanese artists. Most of the parts they matched are less than 10 seconds, and it is very easy that musicians can think about the same thing. It is coincident rather that coping.

Thai people are not stupid, because they can own many copyrights they make by themselves. Thai people can work so well if a reward/award is waiting for them, such as world robot competition, or sport tournament. Naturally, Thai people do not like to step up without motivation. Thai musicians have a lot of motivation, especially pop-rock artists after 2000. Pop-Rock in Thailand have been popular again after 20-30 years. Between 2 eras, Thai people consumed much of sweet-pop songs. Many bands was founded in late 10 years, and many old bands did re-union. The boys want to be cool, especially for the sight of girls. They created a unique style of Thai Pop-Rock. Many songs may sound similar, because those kids grew up with pop songs. Some people are different, because they listen to other things, such as Thai country songs and other foreigners’ things.

I am the one who really like Thai country songs. If we do not count the style of voice and Thai instrument, many fast songs can be popular in Alternative-Rock/Pop world. Both sound very similar. Many Thai people also listen to Rock n’ Roll artist from the United States and Europe. They get the influence directly from the original rock bands, and they do not need to past J-Rock artist. Some Thai people also listen to J-Rock and do cover, but there is less percent.

Clash is another band that Thai J-Rock fans blames that they mimic “Forever Love” of X Japan in their song called, “Nangfa Naijai” (Angle in Mind). I do know both songs so well, and I cannot find that Clash really copies that songs. They are same type of music, but not the same song. Although Clash did cover of L’Arc~en~Ciel, it does not mean that they do not have brain to compose their own music. I am a Punk fan, and many Punk songs are similar. Let’s listen to sample of DecayDance things. They are similar and they are good!

Heath of X Japan, Rough Drawing by Sw Eden

Another important conflict is the song call, “Ter Mai Kir Tai” (You Have Never Died) of a Thai band called, Two (they have 2 members.). My parent keeps that albums, too. The famous guy named, Tong. He helped around many projects. Thai people know that he is really nice. Right now he is older, but he just looks the same. I do not know if this nice guy hears what some people are railing him. I pass around the websites, many Thai X Japan fans railed “Two”. Unbelievable, I saw a guy wrote, “Two-Kuy”. “Kuy” (ควย) is the rudest word in Thai Language. He blamed Thai artists who did not know what X Japan was about. The company always manages things for pop artists, and the only thing that the pop artists need to have is the great performance.

I did look through the track list of that album of “Two”, and style of X Japan songs. (It is 2 years, I was their fan, my early high school.) The melody is weird for Japanese songs, but the song composer is weird in “Two” albums. I could not say, but the news already said that. They said, Thai company has to pay for Yoshiki. I do not want to believe. It is just the late visits of Yoshiki in Thailand. So,… My early high school time, a senior guy who was a friend of “Yai” (Yai was known as a big fan of X Japan in our school.) told me about this conflict. “Two did release “Ter Mai Kir Tai” before X Japan release Say Anything”. If I can go back to that moment, I will never show the goat hand to him. I did,.., I did that hand. He ran behind me and tried to kill me. Where was my soul of Thai person? I had had it when I was a boy scout. I did respect King Rama VI. I love his firmly goal to make Thai people to love each other as one big family.

The news was unbelievable for many people. That song sound quite like Thai songs, and the lyrics can fit in so well. No matter what the reality is, but if there is no that song, many Thai people will never be fans of X Japan.

Tetsu69 of L’Arc~en~Ciel kills cat, Drawing by Sw Eden

There is another conflict of Neo Universe of L’Arc en Ciel, but that is a little thing. I think it is coincident, because it is just a small part of the song. Most of Thai L’Arc en Ciel fans are still young and rich, and they do not really care to talk about the past, because they look up the new stuff, and they talked a lot. I have many friends who like this band, that is why I can say. Like, once I met Kaun with her L’Arc book in a school bus, and we just began to talk although we had never known each other. We talked a lot. It is familiar in American people, but unusual for Thai people. (I am smiling.)

The main thing I would like to say is, Thai people always look down themselves. Many foreign songs were composed after Thai songs. Whenever they sounds the same, Thai people will say that Thai copied those foreigners.

There are other cases, such as Peace Maker’s songs and Josh Groban’s, and also the hair style and dress style of Thai teenager. Although the idea cannot be Copyrights, people keeps railing that style of dressing is wrong things. This may be only one attitude in a corner of Thailand, because most people do not care (me, too). They dress up and they want to be cool.

Let’s see the side of Thailand. What the songs that Thai artists composed before the foreigner and they sound the same! I am an audience and also an artist, and I will never say that they mimic each other. Many people can think about the same thing. The one part of melody or similar style cannot prove that that artist is the copier.

For the international world, Slipknot is more popular than Paradox, but in Thailand, Paradox is more popular. I do not think that both will prefer to listen to each other. Paradox also released this song before Slipknot, too.

First time A7X came into the music industrial, they were considered as a metal band, but now, they are considered as a punk band. Every Japanese fan of Zi:Kill know that Zi:Kill is punk. And very important for us to know that both Zi:Kill and Avenged Sevenfold have a super cool guitar solo. Zi:Kill may do not that great in Lonely, but all stuff in their Rocket album are so amazing! (Pick up the songs that Ken did the music)

Paradox is so great at their show. Almost all songs of Paradox sound more modern than Hide’s. Paradox tend to be Alternative Rock, which is really popular in Western world such the United States and the United Kingdom. Hide is more into underground alternative rock, which can be found in both LA and NY. Although Hide did a lot of underground style, those songs are not popular. Hide’s songs which are popular are something modern; such as In Motion, Tell Me, Lemoned I Scream, Ever Free, Post and Honey Blade.

Rong Rean Kong Nu is so classic, too. This song is very old, but still catching people’s hearts. If you know Thai language, you will cry since the first time you listen to it. It is strange that The Academy is… has the same stuff. The world is so coincident. I played Rong Rean Kong Nu on Harmonica, too. This song is about children who have a hard time to get to school. They lived on the mountain and their school is really faraway. They have to walk step by step. They love to go to school. This song reflect the city society that many children do not like the go to school, although they are so rich and very easy to go to school.

Many people do not eat that, no regular transportation. A need to stand up, saw the index rise vụt debris, such as working to lose weight at all costs.

I have seen many people comply with diet harsh terrible. There are two weeks of drinking water per day and eat a carrot right. Someone is eating a lot but the whole soup of vegetables, fruits, no rice, no fish. Such methods not only make your weight loss but also worse both physically and spiritually.

Please remember that, although for any reason, you will not ever be removed first in three basic components of the meal: gluxit, protit, lipids. Without one of these three substances, the body will not provide sufficient energy for the activity and metabolism. Green vegetables and fruits especially important. Eat more vegetables, you can avoid the risk of cancer.

Diet is not much science will lead to disastrous consequences. The first is the phenomenon of dizziness, dizziness, mud run limbs, and declining memory. Long days will lead to cardiovascular complications, even danger to life. A standard diet to a full three elements mentioned above, but there is a balance, not eating more animal fats, eat more fish than meat, avoid eating high starch …

Sudden weight loss is definitely a manifestation harmful. Ideally, reduction of about 3kg a month. And when has weight standards (reference BMI) is the weight that held firm.

Diet should not last long. Must see alternative diet and time duration of the diet (not abstain but not excessive comfort eating). In general, the eating period of time not longer than three diet. For example, you diet one month to three months following return of the diet.

5 reasons you failed weight loss

[1]. Lack of sleep. Without sleep, your body will supplement energy from other sources, you’ll eat more.

[2]. No rhythmic coordination between diet and exercise.

[3]. Stress. Like the insomnia, we will look to food as a way to clearance. Many people do not step foot in the gym when they are tired or overloaded at work. But in fact, to reduce stress, nothing more than a useful exercise.

[4]. Concept of food as the enemy. Many people eat a maximum reduction, even after the campaign. Manned thoroughly avoid food high in protein, fat, but those items are considered safe to eat the bluff. Both the above two are not brought results as comments.

[5]. No diet is the method that best suits you.

5 sign that you’re eating a healthy diet

[1]. Ideal weight does not change from year to year.

[2]. Not turn into a vegetarian menu with all fields of vegetables.

[3]. Eat breakfast quietly.

[4]. Not dependent on a fixed diet.

[5]. Not infected “fear” any foods do. /.

Dir: Tom Chick Location Scout: Flo Kennart

LOCATIONS
Stream-
Needs stream with room behind, it’s important that the stream is not in woodland. It doesn’t have to run parallel to it, but preferably it would.
Also preferable is a road, or flat land on the non wood side of the tree, as I want this to be a tracking shot.
Great if woods nearby we could also use for opening scenes in wood-

House-
In a perfect world this is at the top of a slight hill, but really not that important. It’s important that it’s in clearish land-most importantly not woods-or at least so we can frame them out.
Woods from windows also preferable but maybe we can work this.
One or two storey no different-
I think you know what sort of house I want-kind of dilapidated-or at least something timeless to it.
Really though-whatever you get is worth looking at.

Woods-opening-
Should be sparse-ish. New Forest woods are quite good for this I think-we need to be able to close and open the space basically-be able to make it denser by framing.
These woods I think we could almost use for most of wood scenes-if we find a clearing as ones we saw before on first location scout great-

Woods exit-
Most importantly we need that clear definition between woodland space and heath.

Heath-
Flat as possible-preferably with straight road running through-at the moment I want to do the heath chase in a single sequence tracking shot-which might be about 2 minutes long-not sure if it will stay like that-but eyes out.
Whatever a clear horizon is very important

Beach
You kind of know what I want-pretty crucial there’s a wide enough stretch of sand and of course a clear sea is important-horizon’s got to be straight again-here’s a picture by Caspar David Friedrich that’s kind of inspiration for end.
Also how Conrad describes sea in ‘Lord Jim’-if you fancied reading it-or ‘Castaway’ chapter in Moby Dick, in which cabin boy Pip is thrown overboard and goes mad from being along in the middle of the atlantic-

all locations-preferably fairly accessible. If you think we can cheat things by using little bits of wood in Bournemouth-think about that too-not everything has to be some beautiful mythic place.
Also if you can find them grouped together-brilliant-
Ie.
1.Stream and woods opening/middle(with house near) 2.Heath and exit of woods. 3.Beach

The donkeys wave. Two owls peer out. You have a toy airplane in your hand and make it sweep through the air. You lift it up to show the others, making it fly over their heads. Look! you say. Magic.
Marilyn Stephenson, a registered dietitian and director of the Office of Nutrition and Food Sciences

Marilyn Stephenson, a registered dietitian and director of the Office of Nutrition and Food Sciences in the FDA Centre for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition explains just exactly what a balanced diet is: [A How-To Guide to a Balanced Diet, FDA Consumer, Pg 23, October 1986]

Eating a balanced diet means eating a wide variety of foods. A traditional way of getting a balanced diet has been to eat a certain number of portions from certain food groups, as defined by the US Department of Agriculture.

The five basic groups are vegetables; fruit; bread and cereal; dairy; and meat, poultry, fish, and legumes (dry beans, lentils and peas).

It’s recommended that you have four servings from the fruit and vegetable group, and should include one good source of vitamin C each day, such as citrus fruit, and a good source of vitamin A, usually deep-yellow or dark-green vegetables. From the bread and cereals group, it is recommended that you get six basic servings including some whole-grain bread or cereals. The recommended servings from the milk and cheese group vary with age, the highest recommendations for teens and nursing mothers (four servings). Two basic servings from the meat, poultry, fish and bean group are recommended.

Then there’s the sixth group: fats, sweets, and alcohol. It’s a group you want to avoid getting too many servings from. Foods in this group have plenty of calories and not a fair balance of other nutrients.

Eggs, as a protein source, are included in the same group as meat, poultry, fish and beans. One egg is considered a serving in that group. So if you eat two eggs for breakfast you have obtained your recommendations from the protein group and should have no more egg, meat, poultry or fish that day.

There are many different types of medical equipment that are used by almost all hospitals. Here are some different kinds.

Medical Monitors: These help doctors analyze a patient’s current state of health and include:

ECG: An Electrocardiogram, also known as an EKG, measures the electrical activity in the heart, and to basically measure how well your heart is working. It is a painless test that shows how fast your heart is beating, whether your heartbeat is steady or not, and strength of the heartbeats themselves. It’s used to diagnose heart problems such as arrhythmia, heart attack, and heart failure.

EEG: An EEG, or Electroencephalography is a test that measures the firing of neurons in the brain by recording electric activity along the scalp. This test can show abnormalities in brain function by such causes as epilepsy and comas.

Diagnostic Equipment: This equipment is used to help doctors diagnose a patient’s injury or illness.

MRI: An MRI, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is a test used by doctors to diagnose abnormalities within the body without surgery. It provides a big contrast between the soft tissues of the body, making problems appear easier. It is can be used for brain, heart, muscle, bone or cancer imaging, and is a pain-free procedure.

Ultrasound: An ultrasound, or ultrasonography, is used to visualize joints, tendons, muscles and organs for abnormalities, and obstetric sonography is used exclusively during pregnancy to evaluate the health and growth of the baby.

X-Ray Machines: These have been in use since their invention in 1895 to detect breaks or anomalies in bones and teeth, and can also be used to detect tumors.

Vegetables are naturally low in calories, fat, and sodium, and are good sources of important vitamin

Vegetables are naturally low in calories, fat, and sodium, and are good sources of important vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. Let the natural flavor of vegetables come through. Use less butter, margarine, salad dressing, honey, and soy sauce to keep down extra calories, fat, sugars, and sodium.
http://www.diet-and-health.net/articles.php?cont=vegetables

Use a minimum amount of water, cook vegetables to the “tender-crisp” stage so they look and taste best and retain more nutrients. Scrub potatoes, cook, and serve unpeeled for more fiber. Try cooking starchy vegetables in unsalted broth for added flavor. Add herbs and spices to enhance flavor. Start with a “pinch” and then let your taste be your guide.

Make your own low-fat, low-sodium, condiments. Try making your own salsa by mixing diced fresh or “no-salt-added” canned tomatoes with diced onions, green peppers, and chilies. Make your own salad dressings. Creamy dressings can be made with plain low-fat yogurt rather than sour cream or mayonnaise. Sprinkle lemon juice and herbs on steamed vegetables.

Starchy vegetables such as potatoes, corn, green peas, and dry beans are not high in calories. But calories climb up high when vegetables are fried and when sweet or fatty sauces and seasonings are added.

Cooked or canned dry beans and peas are good in main dishes as well as soups and salads. Here are some simple dishes to try. Combine black beans and rice with chili powder or other peppery seasoning for a Caribbean-style dish, or combine black-eyed peas and rice in a traditional Southern “Hoppin’ John.” Try a mixture of any of the following beans with diced onion and a vinaigrette dressing for a three-bean salad; green beans, kidney beans, lima beans, and chickpeas (garbanzo beans). Add kidney beans or chickpeas to a lettuce or spinach salad. Blend well soaked and cooked chickpeas with fresh parsley, optional clove of garlic, a dash of olive oil and lemon juice, then refrigerate for a surprisingly tasty dip (Humus).

As a healthy-living blogger, I am always curious about what others eat, how they squeeze in exercise

As a healthy-living blogger, I am always curious about what others eat, how they squeeze in exercise, and how they keep chugging along with their weight maintenance. Tapping in to a supportive community was key to my weight loss, and I still love discovering new tricks. Spending three days with 14 health-minded bloggers on the POM Harvest Tour helped me develop a different perspective on maintaining my Feel Great Weight. My new blogger friends showed me that even the smallest healthy habits can make a big difference on both the scale and in their attitudes.

Get up and get moving.
Cramped hotel gyms and limited space to pack workout gear are no excuse for staying sedentary. Gina of the Fitnessista started her mornings with some yoga. She didn’t need a fancy yoga studio or even a mat. Instead, she laid down a towel in her hotel room and used a free podcast on her iPod to start her morning off on the right foot. Gina’s yoga practice inspired me to start my morning with this type of movement and focus. Incorporating this type of exercise first thing into my day keeps my weight-loss goals at the top of my mind, which helps me make the best possible choices for myself.

Save your splurge.
When our group of bloggers arrived in California, we were welcomed with a group dinner at BJ’s Brewhouse. BJ’s was the type of restaurant where you could easily overdo it with the hearty American fare and a wonderful selection of BJ’s own beers. Sure, it was a special occasion, but we had plenty of special meals planned over the course of the next few days. So Roni of Roni’s Weigh “saved” her calories for the following night—a dinner at a much fancier restaurant. Instead of ordering a plain old beer at BJ’s, Roni splurged the next night on a special pomegranate martini.
tina-positive-postit

Stop the fat talk.
During dinner one night on the blogger tour, Healthy Tipping Point’s Caitlin and I posted an Operation Beautiful note on the mirror in the bathroom of the restaurant. We stuck a Post-it with a positive message by the ladies’ room sink, reminding fellow diners that it doesn’t matter what the scale says, so long as you’re healthy. This small act of kindness put me in a wonderful mood for the rest of the evening. It still makes me smile at the thought of someone finding that note.

Shoot for the moon.
This is exactly what Emily of Sugar Plum is doing. Emily is still in her early 20s and hasn’t yet had any formal culinary training, but she’s scored a spot on the Food Network’s Ultimate Recipe Showdown—not once, but twice! Her ambition and determination have inspired me to continue to work hard to achieve my goals—with my weight maintenance, my new job, and more.

Gotta say, I love LA. Working out outdoors all year round is great for the wallet. I’ve got a bike and I can ride it in November. However, if you’re like me, I like a little kick in the pants every now and again. I like to sign up for classes or programs that force me to stretch and lift and squat. And I’m also obligated to show up to a class (I was a A+, honor roll, perfect attendance nerd in school *SHOCKING*).

Thanks goodness I have friends who love to workout.

My pal and fellow Apple Sisters, Rebekka over at Sickshape.blogspot.com has been scouring Los Feliz and Silverlake for the best and cheapest places to workout. All you cheapies can go on a mini tour and try things out for FREE or very cheap. Here are my favs -

YAS (Yoga for Athletes) – you can print out a coupon (I love coupons!) online and take one class free. NICE!

I’ve been going to Pop Physique (best workout ever)! It’s $100 for new clients- which is a little pricey for me – BUT – if you do plan on going 4-5/times a week, it’s a really good deal. Individual classes are $20/each. YOWSERS! So even if you go 5 times the whole month, you’re getting a deal.

A note about LA gyms: Coming from NYC, gyms seem pretty cheap out here in LA. You can pay anywhere from 20-35/month. That is awesome. BUT, wisdom from the cheapskatewood -NEGOTIATE and don’t pay for it if you’re *thinking* about going. Trust me, it’ll just rack up debt on your credit card. And those salesman f*&*^# are really good at their job – so don’t get suckered in! Seriously consider doing a trial run of anything before committing to a lifestyle change. And also, keep on the lookout for deals. January is a good time to buy gym memberships!

NOW GO WORKOUT CHEAPIES!

I have to admit something to everyone. I hate to say it out loud lest to make it seem more real but here goes….I’ve gained almost 25 pounds since I quit smoking. Doesn’t that just suck??? It’s sickening. Don’t worry, I won’t smoke again but I just hate being in this boat. I lost 50 pounds 12 or so years ago and slowly over time I’ve put it all back on PLUS this latest weight.

So it was ironic to me that this was on the Good Question the other night. When I lost the weight before, I started running and then slowly added other things as I hit plateau’s. I found that I’d be going along and lose 10 pounds or so and no more would seem to come off until I started something else like lifting weights and then rollerblading. I just kept adding more and more until I got to where I wanted to be. Then for reasons that are too hard to explain, I just slowly gained it all back.

The question is can you just diet or do you need to exercise too? I found for me, that I needed both. I lost the weight slowly. 2-3 pounds a week is what I shot for. I’d eat whatever I wanted for suppers but my snacking really changed and I just stopped buying tempting high fat and calorie foods because at midnight, you can talk yourself into almost anything.

I’ve been thinking for a week or so what should I do. I don’t seem to have a whole lot of initiative but I hate to let myself get any bigger so I know I have to do this and I have to start now. I wanted to join a health club and get a trainer for a while but man, it’s an hour drive time and I know myself well enough to know that won’t last. Especially with winter just heading this way so Paul and I started walking last night at the high school. They have open gym on Weds and Sundays and Toby, Sue and the kids go sometimes so I can now say, we started. I walked with the oxygen tank last night and it all went pretty well. I felt stupid so I’d like to try it next time without. But I didn’t lose my breath and it felt good. Now I just need to empty the house of all the bad food.

What about all of you? Do you need to lose a few? How do you do it? Do you starve yourself or do you do a little of both, diet and exercise? Anyone want to do this together?
