Interview avec Matthias Voigt, batteur de Heaven Shall Burn

J’avais fait cette interview en décembre 2007 avec mon ami Lucien pour le compte de skartnak.com. On a été recu dans le tour bus que HSB partageait avec leurs amis de toujours, j ai nommé Caliban… Tous les tpyes qu’on a pu rencontrer ce soir là étaient tous très gentils, ca fait plaisir quand on sait le succès que ces 2 groupes ont! Enjoy l’interview…

Salut Matthias, alors comme nous sommes en plein dans la période des fêtes de Noël, on va commencer cette interview par te demander quel est le cadeau le plus cool que tu as reçu pour Noël ?En fait, j’ai pas vraiment fêté Noël, mon père est décédé cette année, donc on s’est juste rassemblé en famille, mais on ne s’est pas fait de cadeau, de plus on a du partir le lendemain, le 25 décembre, pour débuter cette tournée…

Vous êtes donc actuellement sur la route avec Caliban, comment ça se passe ?
Ça se passe très bien, c’est une mini-tournée qui comporte seulement 6 dates. On a commencé à se mettre dans l’ambiance hier, c’était le quatrième concert mais on l’a ressenti comme si c’était la première vraie date de la tournée. C’est au moment où on commence à se mettre dans le bain qu’on se rend compte que c’est déjà presque la fin. Ca passe trop vite…

Peux-tu nous en dire plus sur les relations que vous entretenez avec eux ? Comment êtes-vous entrés en contact ? Il semblerait qu’il y ait une grande amitié entre Caliban et Heaven Shall Burn ?
Ca s’est passé il y a environ dix ans déjà, nous avions juste sorti quelques démos et nous avions joué pas mal de concerts ensemble et depuis toujours, nous avons toujours eu de bons contacts et ça n’a pas changé jusqu’à aujourd’hui. On a aussi fait deux splits ensemble et depuis leur sortie les gens nous demandent tout le temps de partir en tournée avec Caliban ou alors ils leur demandent que Heaven Shall Burn parte en tournée avec eux, parce que justement ca colle bien entre nous et qu on se connaît depuis longtemps. En plus on partage notre tour bus avec eux sur cette tournée, c’est vraiment tranquille…

Ah bon, Le bus n’est pas trop petit pour deux groupes ?
Non, c’est bon, aucun problème (rires).

Tu parlais des splits que vous avez sorti avec eux, il semblerait que Caliban n’a jamais été aussi populaire qu’en ce moment, leur style musical a pas mal changé comparé a leur premiers albums et il semblerait que leur musique soit accessible à un plus large public. Quelle est ton opinion sur le sujet ?
Je pense pas qu’ils aient tant changé leur style musical, c’est juste une évolution naturelle, bien sûr ils jouent mieux et ont eu de meilleures opportunités pour enregistrer qu’il y a dix ans en arrière, mais ils ont toujours eu des voix claires dans leur musique et je trouve que c’est toujours aussi agressif qu’avant. J’ai beaucoup aimé leur dernier album et c’est toujours un plaisir de pouvoir les revoir en concert chaque soir. Ils sont très professionnels, bien plus professionnels que nous (rires) car nous ne tournons et nous ne répétons pas autant qu’eux.

Les titres de vos albums et vos paroles ont toujours eu une grande importance pour HSB, peux-tu me dire quelle est la signification d’Iconoclast, votre dernier album ? Peut-être est-ce en rapport avec les caricatures de Mahomet au Danemark et les conséquences qui s’en sont suivies ?
On a déjà parlé de ça sur notre précédent album Deaf To Our Prayers… Il est important à nos yeux de faire une séparation claire entre la politique et la religion. Certains partis chrétiens tentent à nouveau de combiner ces deux éléments. Avec HSB, nous nous sommes toujours insurgés contre cela. La pochette d’Iconoclast représente un guerrier qui détruit les symboles de la religion, d’une fausse religion. Pour certaines personnes, la religion n’est rien d’autre qu’un outil ayant pour fin de contrôler les gens afin de les soumettre. Ce guerrier détruit donc des symboles comme par exemple une croix, un crucifix, symbole uniquement utilisé pour faussement rassembler les gens comme des moutons, pour les soumettre. Le concept de Iconoclast tourne donc autour de la thématique des fausses idoles qui engendrent de fausses idées et de faux leaders.

Je pense que tu es au courant de l’assasinat de Benazir Bhutto au Pakistan, quelles sont tes réactions face à ce qui s’est passé ?
J’ai juste vu les gros titres sur Internet, j’ai lu en vitesse mais oui c’est très choquant car quelques mois auparavant, elle est revenue au Pakistan. J’imagine que c’est une personne qui avait des motifs religieux qui a fait ça. Il y avait des rumeurs de corruption là-bas, je ne connais pas vraiment les détails mais elle luttait pour la paix et elle s’aidait des médias. C’est toujours mauvais quand une personne meurt pour une cause qu’elle défend. Quand des personnes n’ont pas envie de discuter ou n’ont plus d’arguments ou qu’ils ne partagent pas les mêmes opinions, ils éliminent leur adversaire et ça c’est vraiment de la merde ! Mais je ne sais pas encore les détails j’ai juste lu qu’elle a été tué par balle, qu’on lui aurait tiré dans le cou et qu’après cela une vingtaine d’autres personnes ont été tuées par un attentat à la bombe.
J’ai lu ce matin qu’elle n’a en fait pas été tuée par balle mais que c’est le souffle le l’explosion qui l’a projetée dans la voiture et qu’elle s’est assommée contre la poignée de la porte, et ce serait ca qui l’aurait tuée…

Pour en revenir à la musique, comment ça se fait qu’il y ait des passages « électroniques » sur ce nouvel album ?
Tu connais le groupe allemand Rammstein ?

Bien sûr, qui ne connaît pas Rammstein (rires) !!
On est depuis très longtemps de grand fans de ce groupe et on a toujours voulu mettre ces influences dans notre musique…On a essayé et on est content du résultat, ça sonne plutôt bien je trouve.

Vous êtes allé jouer en Amérique du Sud, comment ça s’est passé, tu as noté de grosses différences avec l’Europe ?
On est allé au Brésil, au Chili et en Argentine…

C’était de gros concerts j’imagine…
Non pas vraiment plus gros que ceux que l’on joue ici en Europe. Par contre, j’ai trouvé que les gens étaient plus enthousiastes mais bon malgré cela tu peux aussi avoir de mauvais concerts là-bas, heureusement ça ne nous est pas arrivé, tous les shows qu’on a fait étaient super bien organisés, les gens super sympas… Bref je n’ai pas vraiment noté de grosses différences, tu sais en Amérique du Sud, quand tu vas au supermarché tu peux acheter les mêmes produits que nous avons ici en Europe, il y a aussi des McDonald’s (rires). Je pense que si nous étions allé dans ces pays il y a dix ans, les choses auraient été bien différentes. Maintenant il semble que nos cultures et nos valeurs sont vraiment similaires…

Et avez-vous une tournée prévue aux USA ?
On espère pouvoir aller jouer là-bas courant 2008, mais c’est assez compliqué, tu dois avoir un permis de travail ainsi qu’un visa. Et même avec ça, tu peux seulement tourner pendant deux semaines, ce n’est pas assez si tu veux couvrir tous les frais, donc faut qu’on réfléchisse encore. Il faudrait qu’on trouve des autres groupes (un package) afin de faire de plus gros concerts et attirer plus de monde, là on pourrait peut-être s’en sortir financièrement. L’autre solution serait d’y aller en tant que touriste et ne pas payer le visa mais si on se fait attraper, on risque d’avoir des problèmes (rires).

Sur votre page MySpace, on peut voir que vous êtes impliqués dans la campagne « Metalfans against Nazism » Peux-tu nous en parler plus en détails ?
On n’est pas vraiment impliqués, ils nous ont juste ajoutés comme ami sur MySpace et on a ajouté leur bannière sur notre page. Par contre nous sommes impliqués avec « Good Night White Pride » depuis quelques années. Ils ont d’ailleurs dû changer de nom à cause de leur logo qui représentait à l’époque un mec qui tabassait un fasciste, quelques institutions n’ont pas vraiment aimé cette image de violence. Donc maintenant, c’est « Let’s fight white pride ». Nous avons toujours été un groupe qui se revendiquait antifasciste, ca nous parait totalement normal, tu sais, il y a pas mal de problèmes avec les Néonazis spécialement dans la région d’où l’on vient, il nous paraît donc normal de prendre position contre eux…

Quelle est la situation actuelle en Allemagne ?
Je crois que ce n’est pas aussi pire que ca l’était il y a dix an en arrière.

Tu veux dire que la situation s’améliore ?
Non, ça ne s’améliore pas mais il n’y a plus cette violence ouverte et gratuite qu’il y avait au début. Mais si tu vas, par exemple, à un concert Hardcore, il se peut qu’il y ait des néonazis dans la salle mais tu ne les reconnaîtra pas… Il y en aura qui seront habillés comme des skinheads, certains avec de longs cheveux, d’autres avec la tête rasée, d’autres avec des pantalons larges, mais malgré cela ils auront tous les mêmes idées et c’est un gros problème vu que tu ne peux pas les reconnaître. Ces gens ne parlent plus ouvertement de l’holocauste tout en disant que c’est quelque chose qui n’est jamais arrivé… (il réfléchit), je ne sais pas si je peux utiliser ce mot, mais il semblerait qu’ils soient plus éduqués, ce n’est plus comme dans les années 80 où il y avait des hooligans de droite qui allaient tabasser les gens dans la rue. Il y en a toujours mais plus autant qu’avant…

Il y avait aussi des gens d’extrême droite au Parlement en Allemagne il y a quelques temps non ? Vers Münich non ?
Dans certains états oui, autour de Munich je ne suis plus sur mais dans l’est de l’Allemagne je crois qu’il y en avait oui. C’est marrant car les gens ont réalisé que ces gens n’étaient pas très sérieux, car ils étaient souvent liés à des scandales et des histoires de corruption alors que dans leur campagne électorale, ils parlaient tous de combattre la corruption. Ils ont été au Parlement mais ils n’ont pas vraiment eu plus de pouvoir … Mais c’est vrai que c’est toujours dangereux car peut-être qu’un jour, une de ces personnes sera plus intelligente que les autres et arrivera à mieux parler aux électeurs et tout pourra peut-être recommencer comme il y a 70 ans en arrière…

Parlons un peu de Lifeforce Records, vous avez sorti plusieurs albums avec eux avant de rejoindre Century Media, j’ai lu dans une interview que Stefan, le big-boss de Lifeforce disait a votre sujet qu’il était vraiment déçu de ne pas avoir réussi à vous garder sur son label, peux-tu nous dire pourquoi vous avez décidé de changer de label ?
Je crois qu’actuellement nous sommes toujours le groupe qui a vendu le plus d’albums sur Lifeforce, nous sommes aussi de très bons amis avec Stefan, il n’y a eu aucun problème avec lui. Nous avons juste reçu une offre, on en a parlé avec Stefan et il nous a dit que ça ne lui posait pas de souci, on est donc parti en restant en bon termes avec lui…
En fait vous avez sorti Antigone en 2004 sur Century Media, une année plus tard votre deuxième split avec Caliban sort sur Lifeforce Records, puis Deaf To Our Prayers est sorti de nouveau sur Century Media et récemment la réédition de Wathever It May Take et sortie à nouveau sur Lifeforce Records, c’est un peu bizarre tous ces changements entre ces deux labels… Il semblerait que vous êtes toujours liés d’une certaine manière à Lifeforce Records ?
On n’est pas vraiment revenus sur Lifeforce Records, en fait on avait négocié avec Century Media afin d’introduire une close dans notre contrat disant qu’on pouvait toujours sortir des albums avec Lifeforce, Caliban a fait la même chose avant de signer sur Roadrunner et c’est pour ça qu’on a sorti notre deuxième split sur Lifeforce !

C’était donc une volonté des deux groupes de continuer à bosser avec Lifeforce a cause de l’amitié que vous entretenez avec Stefan ?
Oui, exactement, c’est quelque chose qui était prévu avant que les deux groupes signent sur de plus gros labels, on voulait lui donner quelque chose en retour de tout ce qu’il a fait pour nous.

Et concernant la réédition de Whatever It May Take ? Quelles ont été les motivations pour ressortir cet album sur Lifeforce Records ?
L’album original était épuisé et notre producteur n’était pas vraiment content du son, il avait toujours les morceaux sur son ordinateur et il nous a proposé de les remixer. On a donc changé l’ordre des chansons, ce n’était pas très dur à faire (rires). Et comme ça les gens pourraient avoir quelque chose de mieux pour le même prix, je pense que c’était une meilleure idée de faire comme ça, plutôt que de re-presser encore et encore la même chose, si tu peux faire mieux pourquoi pas…

Avez-vous subi une quelconque censure de la part de Century Media ? Heaven Shall Burn a toujours eu des paroles très engagée et ça m’a fait penser notamment à Hatebreed qui avait des paroles vraiment directes envers la religion sur leur premier album et qui plus tard se sont adapté à des paroles plus classiques en signant sur un plus gros label…
Non, nous n’avons jamais eu de problèmes de censure, Century Media nous soutient beaucoup dans tout ce que l’on fait. En fait, ils pourraient nous censurer ou nous virer si nous avions des paroles à tendance fasciste ou quelque chose de ce genre, et ça, ça serait une bonne raison (rires)…

Quel est l’album de Heaven Shall Burn que tu préfères ?
Le nouveau bien sûr …

J’en étais sûr (rires)…
Mais sinon dans les anciens mon préféré est Whatever It May Take je crois que jusqu’à maintenant c’est le meilleur album que nous aillons sorti jusqu’à maintenant. Mais bon on ne peut pas vraiment le comparer au nouvel album. Par contre, je n’aime plus tellement Antigone…

Ah bon ?
Ouais je pense qu’il est bon mais c’est de loin le plus mauvais album que nous avons fait, quant à Deaf To Our Prayer je le trouve bon… mais avec une année de recul, je me dis que nous aurions pu faire les choses d’une meilleure manière, il y a une année je t’aurais dit que c’était mon album favori…

Peux-tu m’en dire plus sur la chanson Mybestfriend.com qui se trouve sur l’album Deaf To Our Prayers ?
C’est une chanson qui a été assez mal interprétée par beaucoup de personnes qui croyaient que c’était une chanson anti-Myspace. Mais ce n’est pas vraiment cela, certes elle parle de MySpace et de ses concurrents, mais dans le fond, ça parle des personnes qui se créent de fausses identités sur Internet, qui s’inventent des amis qu’ils n’ont pas dans la vraie vie et tout ce qui tourne autour de ça.

Et quelle est ta position concernant le téléchargement de musique ?
C’est une question difficile, mais je pense que pour un groupe comme nous, c’est quelque chose de positif, on se fait connaître par les gens qui téléchargent notre musique, ces même personnes viendront sûrement à nos concerts par la suite et achèteront notre merchandising. En fait, ça attire l’attention sur nous … mais d’un autre côté je pense que si ça continue comme ça, il n’y aura plus de labels, car si tu ne paies pas tes albums dans quelques temps il n’y aura même plus de chansons à télécharger sur le net… Comme je te l’ai dit, pour nous c’est pas très grave, on ne reçoit pas d’argent sur les ventes de nos albums, on gagne des sous en vendant le merchandising et grâce aux cachets de nos concerts, donc pour nous c’est mieux si les gens peuvent télécharger notre musique gratuitement. Mais c’est vraiment mauvais pour les labels car les groupes ont besoin d’eux afin de sortir des albums, ça n’a pas de sens si personne n’achète des cd’s, il faut bien qu’ils puissent aussi rentrer dans leur frais…

Quelles sont vos activités en dehors du groupe ?
Que faites-vous quand vous n’êtes pas en tournée ?
J’étudie, Maike le guitariste aussi, notre chanteur Markus travaille dans un hôpital comme infirmier, le bassiste est thérapeute, il s’occupe de faire de la rééducation avec des gens qui ont eu des accidents et Alex, l’autre guitariste, travaille dans un studio du nom de Rape Of Harmonies. Notre groupe est en fait juste un hobby.

Comment ça se fait que vous soyez toujours ensemble ? On voit de plus en plus souvent de jeunes groupes Hardcore qui se séparent très tôt ?
Je crois que la plupart des groupes se séparent car ils veulent être connu, ils veulent très vite faire des tournées et si ça n’arrive pas ils commencent à s’engueuler et c’est a mon avis la raison qui fait que, de nos jours, la majorité des groupes splittent.

Que penses-tu de cette mode emo qui envahit la scène Hardcore de nos jours ?
Ca a toujours fait partie de la scène de soigner son look. La majorité sont des jeunes qui sont à la recherche d’une identité.

Et que penses-tu de ces groupes qui cherchent à être fashion et qui ont tendance à plus mettre en avant leur façon de s’habiller plutôt que leur musique ?
En fait, ça m’est un peu égal, tant qu’ils n’essaient pas d’être des personnes qu’ils ne sont pas, ça ne me pose aucun problème…

Que penses-tu de la scène actuelle ?
Comment as-tu vu évoluer la scène depuis toutes ces années ?
Pour ma part je pense qu’il n y a plus vraiment de scène. A l’époque, les groupes se soutenaient plus les uns les autres, maintenant c’est chacun pour soi. Pas mal de groupes apparaissent et tout ce qu’ils veulent c’est signer un contrat pour sortir un album, ils ont tout de suite plein de merchandising, un belle page MySpace avec pleins de clips vidéos … Bref ce n’est plus pour l’amour de la musique, pour soutenir d’autres groupes ou s’intéresser à développer leur scène locale, tout ce qu’ils veulent c’est juste faire quelque chose pour eux et devenir les plus connus et les plus populaires, c’est comme je l’ai dit avant, une des raisons qui fait que les groupes se séparent très rapidement c’est parce qu’ils commencent leur groupe pour de mauvaises raisons, c’est pour ça que je crois qu’il n’y a plus vraiment de scène underground de nos jours. Il y a de moins en moins de groupes qui veulent rester underground.

Il y a des groupes Suisse que tu apprécies ou qui t’ont influencé ?
Je connais Meridian de Genève, on a joué avec eux en 1999 mais je crois qu’ils ont splittés. Sinon il y a bien sur Cataract qui sont de bons amis, je connais aussi Prejudice, il y a aussi Dark Day Dungeon.

Ouais, mais ils ont malheureusement splittés aussi…
Ah bon… j’ai entendu qu’ils avaient changé de chanteur et que c’était l’ancien chanteur de Cataract qui chantait pour Dark Day Dungeon.

Mais ça c’était il y a très longtemps…
Ah bon, j’avais pourtant lu quelque chose sur eux il y a quelques mois, je ne savais pas qu’ils avaient spittés, c’est arrivée en récemment donc ?

Oui, dans le courant de cette année, leur chanteur Christian Ebert qui à l’époque chantait pour Cataract, chante actuellement avec le groupe allemand Elision.
Ouais Elision ça fait un moment que je les connais eux, ils sont d’ailleurs toujours en activité. Je les ai vu plusieurs fois en concert avec Strain et Yuppicide dans les années 90’ donc je les connais depuis que j’ai commencé à aller aux concerts Hardcore (rires)

Et Celtic Frost ???
Ouais, c’est clair, il y a aussi Samaël, ah et Krokus, c’était aussi un de mes groupes préfères quand j’avais genre 10ans (rires)

Après les nombreuses interviews que tu as faites, j’aurais voulu savoir si tu avais une questions que tu aimerais qu’on te pose mais qu’on ne t’a jamais posée ?
Non, mais je me demande juste comment les gens arrivent à imaginer certaines questions (rires).

Tu arrive a nous sortir une question bizarre ou quelque chose de marrant qu’on t’a déjà posé ?
Oh, c’est difficile, c’est à chaque fois des questions qui ont un sens mais ça arrive pas souvent que ce soit des questions folles, mais c’est juste que des fois je fais des interviews par e-mail et je suis en face de mon ordinateur pendant des heures à ne pas savoir quoi écrire (rire). Mais non je n’ai pas vraiment d’exemple concret à te donner sur le moment,…

Quels sont les groupes que tu écoutes ces temps ?
Ces temps, j’écoute beaucoup de Neurosis, mais aussi du Converge, bon ça change tous les jours, en plus dans le bus je n’écoute pas tellement de musique, la plupart du temps on dors ou on regarde des DVD’s. On a acheté un coffret avec sept films de Bud Spencer et on a commencé hier à regarder Banana Joe (rires). Quand on est en tournée on a tout le temps de la musique dans les oreilles, avec les sounds-checks et ensuite sur scène, alors on préfère regarder des films quand nous sommes dans le bus.

Et quels sont tes groupes préférés en ce moment ?
J’aime bien Sick Of It All, j’ai pas mal de vieux trucs sur mon Ipod. j’ai acheté leur dernier album mais j’ai pas vraiment apprécié alors je suis revenu a leurs premier albums que j’ai toujours bien apprécié. Mais en dehors de ça je n’écoute pas tellement de groupes récents.

Tu parlais avant de Converge, tu aimes leur dernier album ?
Ouais, bon je suis pas toujours d’humeur à écouter leur musique (rires) C’est comme avec Neurosis, je n’écoute pas leurs albums quand que le soleil brille…(rires)

Quelles sont tes projets pour ce réveillon ? Tu as prévu de fêter ou la nouvelle année ?
Je serai sûrement à la maison en train de dormir lors du passage à la nouvelle année parce que je serais sûrement trop fatigué, je ne suis pas vraiment un grand fêtard, je pense que je vais rester tranquillement à la maison.

Que peut-on attendre de Heaven Shall Burn dans un futur proche ?
Quels sont vos projets pour l’année 2008 ?
On est en train de préparer cette tournée aux USA, je ne sais vraiment pas si on pourra la faire, je l’espère. On verra aussi ce que ce nouvel album va nous apporter comme opportunités. Nous allons aussi jouer sur pas mal de gros festivals en Allemagne et en Slovénie, comme par exemple le Summer Breeze…

Vous êtes déjà confirmés là-bas je crois ?
Oui, en plus ce n’est pas très loin d’ici il me semble…

Si quand même, en Suisse tout est assez proche mais en Allemagne les distances sont bien plus grandes (rires)
Ahh okay, bon sinon il y aura aussi le With Full Force, mais bon c’est plus loin, autrement en Slovénie on va aller au Metal Camp et ensuite on verra ce qu’on va nous proposer en fonction de nos études et de nos jobs. On aimerait aussi tourner plus dans le sud de l’Europe car pour l’instant nous faisons pas mal de concerts en Allemagne. On aimerait bien aller plus souvent en France ou éventuellement plus loin…

Peut-être en Asie ?
Nous sommes déjà allé au Japon pour jouer trois dates, c’était vraiment cool, peut-être que l’année prochaine on pourra y aller de nouveau.

En fait je suis un bon pote à Olivier de Genève.
Ah bon c’est cool, je crois qu’il est là ce soir, il m’a appelé avant

Ouais il sera là…
Tu es au courant qu’on va recommencer à organiser des concerts sur Genève ?
Ah bon ? je sais qu’Olivier avait arrêté il y a environ deux ans de ça… je voulais le remercier pour tout ce qu’il a fait pour nous, la première fois que nous sommes allé a Genève, c’était en 1999, nous y sommes retourné en 2001 pour un week-end, je me souviens qu’il nous avait fait tellement à manger que quand nous sommes montés sur scène, on arrivait pas à jouer tellement on avait mangé. (rires). C’est toujours sympa de le revoir.

Il faut que vous veniez rejouer à Genève !
Ouais pas de problème, on va s’organiser ça !

Retrospect's Yes Sir! Live on Wacken 09

The four dudes of Thai Rockband Retrospect are breaking down the borders for the first time since their start. They’re on the bill of the next Wacken Open Air in Germany. Nothing special? Well, consider the fact it’s their first trip to the continent, the festival attracts about 70.000 guests and it has been sold out ever since november last year. Are they up for succes? A quick/small recap of their career so far, so even the people who don’t know them can easily get to know them.

Retrospect is a band residing in Bangkok, Thailand. Ever since their start in 2000, the boys – or guys – from Retrospect have been able to astonish people with their own Retrorian style. (Retrorian is also the name of their fanclub and the song Yes Sir! is kind of their fanclub chant :p) Their first EP called For Your Ears Only got released through ScreamLab Records in the summer of 2003. It immediately gave attention to the young band and an English Demo called For Your Ears Anytime was a fact. Not that much later they got signed by Genie Records, a GMM Grammy subsidiary and one of the leading Thai record Labels, and were able to put out their first full-length Unleashed in 2007. Their first DVD: The First Concert, showed the boys in their natural habitat and showed a lot of their talent by letting them do duets and featurings with other Genie stars as Da Endorphine and Tao from Sweet Mullet

More recently, in July 2008, came the follow up to their debut: Rise and in December of the same year they released their second DVD/VCD of the new tour called Rise Now! They easily end up in the Thai charts with their music-videos and singles and often stand out in-between the more Pop-orientated Thai culture. Retrospect took Thailand by storm and will not rest before the rest of the world has heard of them. Like I said before, they’re booked for the giant Rock-festival Wacken Open Air in Germany and so their popularity outside Thailand can only start to increase. (They’re playing on the 31st of July, second day of Wacken between Tristania and Mago de Oz on the Party Stage)

Thailand is multicultural. Pop, Rock and Rap easiy go together and are incorporated in the same song. Retrospect tries grabbing the best things out of every genre and put them together at their live shows. Either classical VieTrio, beatboxing Chin Chinawuth or pop rocking Da Endorphine are easily mixed into Retrospect’s harder music.In their latest DVD they even featured one of their youngest fans: Poom, screaming along with Singer Nap’s screams. That said, Nap’s screams are sure to give everyone goosebumps and the vocal parts are easy to sing along to. Now all we have to do left is study Thai and get to know what they’re actually singing about.

Retrospect befriends UK-rockers Bring Me the Horizon

It’s been nearly a month since Thai Rockers from Retrospect performed on the big Wacken Festival in Germany, and still we can’t really find any footage of the concert. I’m trying my best to show you things, but they’re not making it easy for me.

The guys of Retrospect, however, are releasing things little by little, and I hope that we won’t have to wait very long anymore before we’re able to seen footage of their European Debut!

Retrospect seems to have made an impact

After these whole two weeks of searching the net, finding absolutely no footage of their Wacken performance, I came across some comments and noticed the band has made quite some impact.

People calling Retrospect their highlight – knowing there were over 200 bands on the festival site – and saying they have to come to England – or any other place in the world – and tour. As well as comments on Last.fm Stating they should tour the world together with label-mates Sweet Mullet. Now all we are wondering about is: why won’t they?

I also couldn’t keep myself from posting this thingy. It looked like they had some fun, will it mean they’ll do anything to return?

Nicht zu fassen… hahaha – kann es noch nicht glauben! Kaum ist mein RL Avi aus dem Urlaub zurück, schon liegt sie wieder lachend vor dem Desktop! *kopfschüttel

Aber… von Anfang an (für die Nichteingeweihten). Juttas Göttinnengatte (schönes Wort liebe @yohtine – sollte dem Duden vorgeschlagen werden!) war dieses Jahr mit drei “Jungs” in Wacken. Die alten Herren haben sich mal wieder unter die Jugend gemischt und ein bisschen auf der norddeutschen SIM beim alljährlichen Heavy-Metall-Zauber mitgemischen. Wein (oder vielmehr Bier), Weib (hätten sie gerne gehabt *g) und Gesang (naja, ich würde ja eher sagen Gebrüll) – vier Tage lang.

Kleiner Einblick gefällig?Achtet besonders auf die unten angegebenen Sekunden *g – da sehr ihr Tom (der, der sich mal so richtig gehen lässt. Mit Cape, Brille und Wacken-Rucksack)… PRUST! Her hat sich filmen und bei Youtube hochladen lassen *g. Vorher ist er natürlich auch da im Kreis rumgelaufen… aber mit 40 + schafft man maximal noch eine Runde *g. Ach ja – ich empfehle, den Ton aus zu machen… ist ja nicht zu ertragen der Radau…

Die fünf zum Freitag: Die fünf besten Metalsongs aus dem Jahre 2004, Pt.1

Als ich neulich meine Musiksammlung nach Jahren geordnet gesehen hab, ist mir aufgefallen wie viele gute Platten 2004 herausgekommen sind. Deswegen wollte ich eigentlich die fünf besten Metalsongs heue vorstellen, da es aber genau zehn geworden sind, gibt es heute mal den ersten, und am nächsten Freitag den zweiten Teil. Und los geht’s.

Destiny : Naunyn Street.

Destiny haben mit „The tracy chapter“ ein Album vorgelegt, das sie womöglich nicht mehr toppen werden. Jeder Song steht für sich und die Produktion von Tue Madsen rundet das Ganze noch perfekt ab. Ich hab „Naunyn Street“ ausgewählt weil es einerseits gut nach vorne geht, andererseits mit „Angel left me as death kissed my heart“ eine perfekte Stelle zum reinlegen hat.

Heaven shall burn : The only truth.

Heaven shall burn entdeckte ich wie viele andere auch über „The weapon they fear“ und sofort war klar, dass das Album gekauft werden muss. Schließlich lieferten Heaven shall burn dann mit Antigone den perfekten Soundtrack für einen kalten, regnerischen Herbst. „The only truth“ wegen seiner kompromisslosen Härte und weil sie das als ich sie das erste Mal live gesehen habe, als Opener gespielt und mich völlig umgehauen haben.

Fear my thoughts : The great collapse.

Die dritte große, deutsche Band die 2004 ein Meisterwerk mit „The great collapse“ abgeliefert haben. Wenn das ruhige Intro „Velvet“ in den Anfangsriff von „The great collapse“ mündet und der Song dann über sechs Minuten lang mit verschiedenen Tempowechsel, Moshparts, Blastbeats und anderen Sachen mich komplett mitreißen lässt, darf der Song in dieser Liste nicht fehlen. Von den anderen Songs auf der CD mal ganz zu schweigen.

Scars of tomorrow : Suffocating words.

Auch wieder ein Song von einem meisterhaften Album. Im Gegensatz zum Vorgänger „Design your fate“ wartet „Rope tied to the trigger“ mit einem druckvollen Sound auf und ist durchgehend auf einem krass hohen Niveau. Eine markante Stimme, Grooves zum Abwinken und Melodien zum reinlegen, was will man mehr? „Suffocating words“ als Vertreter dieses Albums.

Raunchy : Join the scene.

Ich kann mich erinnern, dass Raunchy wegen dem „Confusion Bay“ Album schon für kurze Zeit kleinen Hype hatten. Wieso auch nicht? So guten Industrial-Metal mit vielen Synthies, harten Strophen und engelsgleichen Ohrwürmer-Refrains hatte man lange nicht mehr gehört. Klar, dass ich die Scheibe auch besitzen musste und den ganzen Sommer über nur Ohrwürmer davon hatte.

Sucks'n'Summer VIII - Festival

dieses fand vergangenes wochenende zum achten mal in meiner geburtststadt Leisnig, landkreis Mittelsachsen, statt. diesmal mit einem standortwechsel, befand sich der festivalbereich nun nicht mehr auf dem gelände des Stadtbades Leisnig, sondern direkt auf der Muldenwiese.

das line-up dieses jahr konnte sich wahrlich wieder einmal sehen lassen, warteten doch headliner wie Heaven Shall Burn, Maroon, Evergreen Terrace oder auch Born From Pain auf.

duftmarken auf diesem vollbeladenen festival setzten bei tollem 30°-sommer-wetter schon zeitig Myra und Casey Jones, welche beide im zelt spielten und dieses sehr ordentlich aufheizten. der gute gig von Casey Jones war für mich die überraschung auf dem diesjährigen S’n'S und veranlasste mich gleich, platten von ihnen zu kaufen.

die besten shows kamen meiner meinung nach am freitag von Evergreen Terrace, welche mit alten krachern wie “No Donnie, These Men Are Nihilist” und auch neuen vom album “Wolfbiker” sehr gut für die beste freitagsshow, welche von meinen favourites von Heaven Shall Burn kam, aufwärmten. eine ordentlich durcheinandergewirbelte setlist aus neuen und auch vielen alten songs ließ gut tanzen!

meine trophäe der besten show müssen sie sich aber mit Maroon teilen, da deren show diesmal ziemlich atemberaubend war. eine wall of death bis zum mischpult, “Stay Brutal” nicht nur auf der bühne und vieles mehr wurde da geboten. ganz groß!

alles in allem hat es sich mal wieder sehr gelohnt, die 40 € für drei volle tage Hard- und Metalcore in der wohl schönsten stadt auf dem berge auszugeben.

und ich bin mir sicher, die anwohnerInnen hatten über den freien eintritt hinaus auch noch mehr davon.

Wacken Open Air 2009

The following may appear to be a somewhat protracted and ill thought out review, and in many ways it is, but after minutes of deliberation we decided that the best way for you to see if Wacken is for you is to see as many different opinions as possible on it, so here are four peoples seperate reviews of Wacken all mashed into one, and much like peas, whilst seperate reviews are nice on there own, they’re far superior when they’re mushy. I know, my imaginitive literary skills are extraordinary.

Der W

So this was some pretty old German band that me, Harry and Paul caught while harry was trying to get a wacken t shirt and buy me a towel at the official merch stand. Germans seem to know and love them, but if like me you aren’t fortunate enough to have Prussian blood in your veins, they are most likely completely alien to you. Now, I mensioned that they’re old, however they don’t actually sound that dated. Although the start was rather shaky, and there was some pretty obvious last minute level checking going on, once they got going they churned out some pretty damn good rock. Catchy vocals, nice interesting guitar work, energetic performance….these guys would have probably been huge if they were English or American. Plus the decent song writing makes it sound like it could have come from anytime in the past few decades. Solid Stuff. 7/10

Retrospect

I checked this band out because I was in the area, buying a kebab (if there is any reason to go to Wacken, it’s the donner kebabs there. Proper well mixed, good amount of meat and salad, and the thick bread that you can hold the whole thing with and it won’t soak through or break, its good bread and all!). I also feel the need to check out every Asian band I can when I’m at a festival…don’t ask why, I guess I’m a closet weaboo. Anyway, after I finished the kebab, I found the party stage with these feminine Asian guys playing music that was like a heavyer, more hardcore Bullet For My Valentine. They were pretty good to be honest, I’m just glad they were slightly out of the way on the party stage, or some of the more puritanical metalheads present may have bottled them for being so feminine and metalcore or emo or whatever. The singer was proper camp too. They did have some pretty extreme fringes going on. The crowd of people there though loved them, and after their set they even got quite a large chant of “Zu Gabel”, the german encore of the moment. Very tightly played, with some decent instrumental work. The bassist was sick too, and played an awesome 6-string, as well as being the least feminine of the bunch (not saying much I know). 8/10

Walls of Jericho

First hardcore styled band of the festival was always going to be good. From pretty much the get go, Walls was a melee of pits, hardcore dancing and walls of death, and I’m proud to say I was a part of all of these. Until you’ve seen Walls live, you can’t really appreciate what a beast singer Candace Kucsulain really is. With strong arms to put most male frontmen to shame, and a devastating scream, she was probably the best frontperson of the festival. And she started a wicked if not slightly questionable chant of “Fuck!, Fuck!, Fuck!” by the end of which I was pretty much in love with her. The sound was perhaps a little muddy, and quite a lot of subtleties were most likely lost, but at least it worked really well on the breakdowns. And some good breakdowns seemed to be what most people were looking forward to. They played lots of new material too, which all went down a treat. 9/10

Bullet For My Valentine

I was kind of apprehensive about this, as I knew a lot of people were resentful of them being here, them being an “Emo” band or whatever, but watching them you would never have guessed the stigma attached to them. They played a really tight set, with one of the best sounds of the whole festival, and got an incredible reaction, right back to the beer trucks. “Tears don’t fall” was probably the best song, being a guilty pleasure of me and almost everyone I know. It was a weird feeling being there with thousands of people watching a song we all secretly loved but are normally too ashamed to admit, being able to finally let rip. Kind of like a thousand people simultaneously coming out of the closet together. In many ways, seeing Bullet for my Valentine live was the closest I will ever get to participating in a gay pride parade. And having them playing at a festival that’s normally stringently traditionalist only emphasized the feeling. 9/10

Motorhead

For a first time seeing them, it was enjoyable whether or not I will bother next time…still they know how to rock and they know how to roll. A band still worthy of their status. [8/10]

In Flames

Flanked by a stunning light and pyro display the Swedes can always be relied on for a great performance. No great setlist surprises but solid as a rock and tight as a knot. [7/10]

Testament

Testament played a very tight, well eq’ed, energetic set, with all the classics and a nice cross section through their career, and all was good. However, I feel that the biggest point of the set was the curious spectacle of Chuck Billy, now bloated to the size of a full grown bull manatee, sporting for some odd reason half a mic stand, which he clutched like a chubby RPG player would a staff of warding or something. And if the spectacle of a large adult male with long graying hair and a not fully put together mic stand wasn’t odd enough, whenever not singing, he would play said half stand like it was a guitar, with a scary degree of accuracy to the actual guitar. Sometimes you would confuse him with one of the 2 real guitarists. So I spent most of the set curiously squinting at Chuck, or moshing my balls off. 8/10

Bring Me The Horizon

BMTH always seem to have a terrible live sound, and this gig was no exception. Throughout the whole set you could barely pick out a single riff, just mush, interspersed with breakdowns. The best part of the gig was no doubt the crowd, who kept the spirit high through the whole set, and even engineered a wall of death in the cramped (piss) W.E.T (through) stage. The crowd made this one, the band I have to admit, even though I would call myself a fan, kind of phoned this one in. 6/10

Heaven Shall Burn

Possibly the best intro to a set was heaven shall burn, milking the gentle pre recorded intro before destroying everything. The biggest circle pit of the festival engulfed all. The sound was kind of raw, and they weren’t the tightest band on display, but in terms of raw brutality they gave most a run for their money. 8/10

BFMV

Go against a cloud of doubt and show us all that they truly deserve their mainstage slot. [8/10]

Lacuna Coil

Played an impressive set, mixing old with new and even gave us a taster of some new material. Closing with their always good Depeche Mode cover. Superb. [7/10]

Machine Head

I’m pretty sure everyone agreed that Machine Head was the best band of the festival. Opening with Imperium, possibly one of the best live songs I’ve ever seen, set the bar for the rest of the night. I’m pretty lucky that my New Era cap stayed on through the whole set, and even now it feels slightly sweat drenched. This was however an empty victory, as Jim had earlier dropped it in Ravioli juice. They played an even cross section through their catalogue, and even a few surprises I thought they wouldn’t do live, like the Burning Red, and 9 minute epic Halo from The Blackening. The energy pretty much never abated, and for me, it was a perfect ending to the festival. One of the best live bands I’ve seen. 10/10

Axel Rudi Pell

I was with relief that I saw Axel Rudi Pell take the stage, seeing as they’ve cancelled the last 2 wackens in a row I wasn’t sure if I’d ever see them here, but I did and they were very enjoyable. They were a break from the norm and, whilst playing to a surprisingly low crowd turnout, still got a great reaction. The man himself is a great guitarist and the musicians he’s surrounded himself with are all equally good, especially singer Johnny Gioeli and it was a fun energetic set combining old songs with new (not that there’s ever been any real difference.) 8/10

Heaven and Hell

The stage went red, the band sauntered on with confidence and energy, Dio burst onto the stage with precision and vigour! ‘Mob Rules’ kicked in and from there it was a ‘best of’ Dio’s Sabbath set. Every song from the bands title track all the way to the awesome new ‘Bible Black’ and the exceptionally powerful ‘I’! This band had a presence that only very few bands over the weekend had, it was a well performed set with a basic stage set that suited the band and feel very well, although I couldn’t help but wish the devil beast with multiple tongues would have been made as a stage set rather than just a video. Overall, one of my favs of the weekend – 10/10

Doro

Wow. Superb set, fantastically performed by the Queen of metal. Some amazing tracks, all well preformed and with a brilliant stage set, with ‘Night Of The Warlock’ stealing the show with the amazing moving stage set of the Warlock with its red eyes and huge hands looming over the stage. Doro was obviously happy to be there, the song list was a great mix of old and new material with Herzblut generating great emotion, this was true Doro, much better than she had been at the beginning of the weekend singing the weirdly annoying ‘We Are The Metalheads’ Wacken theme song, she sang ‘We Are’, the real song, they even made a mistake and put the lyrics for ‘We Are The Metalheads’ on the screen, but the crowd didn’t sing it, it was very funny and fitting, We Are is much better! Another of my favourite sets – 9.5/10

Hammerfall

Surprising, I got hammered in a pit, for HF, a real big frigging pit that just burst out during the second song, and again during ‘Glory To The Brave’, No I am not joking, during that quite track, it was amazing, mind bogging and intense… I have been told that from a distance it was not great as sets go, but from up close and in pits and the massive crush at the front it was fantastic, topped the amazing ‘Hearts On Fire’. It was a fantastic experience where I bust my lip, and one that I will not forget in a hurry. I plan to catch them next time they play, just to see if this atmosphere could be rekindled – 8/10

Airbourne

AC/DC can be so easily referenced, but actually I will avoid it. The band played heartily, great stage presence and a fantastic power with a great vocalist and guitarist. The obvious tracks of note were ‘Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast’ and ‘Running Wild’ both of which were fantastic. The crowd were very into their energetic antics, like the guitarist climbing the stage rig and hanging off playing the guitar, it was superb to enjoy the set. – 9/10

Saxon

Despite a rather disappointing appearance at Hammerfest these brits celebrate their 30th anniversary in style. Seeming genuinely stunned Biff accepts an award and the band even throw a rarely heard ‘Crusader’ for good measure.[8/10]

Running Wild

You’d think when its your ‘Last Show Forever’ you’d throw a few quid at it surely…a largely inaccessible show to the non-fans and even those who know the music felt let down. A somewhat mediocre end.[5/10]

GWAR

With music that is almost unbearable to listen to outside of the show GWAR do what they do best, mock politicians and celebrities, shoot various body fluids everywhere and are just downright funny.[7/10]

Cathedral

Quite why Cathedral are billed at half 3 in the afternoon on the massive stage is an utter mystery. Much better suited to the intimate, dark environment its just a bit of a let down. Poor billing, poor setting and sadly a pretty poor show. [4/10]

Grand Magus

Never a letdown live, these guys were simply fantastic, powerful songs, searing vocals and a sound that is far heavier than anything you could expect 3 musicians to create. [9/10]

Borknagar

I am going to make this simple, I was looking forward to them alot as I have wanted to see them for ages… Not the worst band ever technically but for me personally: they sucked, truly boring and disappointing – 2/10

Bon Scott

What can really be said, they were a great AC/DC tribute act, played some great songs very well for a tribute act. The tent was packed full for the first night, It was a squeeze to get in but worth the effort. Very fun but to be honest it was a little pale in comparison to AC/DC a few months before. Can’t beat ‘Highway’ or ‘Hell’s Bells’ or ‘Back In Black’, great stuff – 7/10

Baz’s Verdict – In all the festival was superb, the atmosphere was great however my camp had too many early sleepers for my liking, but such is life, would have loved not to get a migraine for Saxon as they sounded amazing from the site, but alas, can’t get everything you want. Loved the antics of killing an inflatable Simpson’s sofa by diving off a van onto it, yeah, some being more naked in the act than others. Yeah, The leaning tower of gazebo. Yeah, The weird drunk German pissing on the van while I stood there dumb-founded calling him a douche. Yeah, The annoying bastards in the next camp repeating the same absolute shite all over and again. Yeah, Certain odd situations with obsessive 14 year old German girls. Yeah, The Yorkshire bastards in the camp next door with their drinking dickery and having a laugh. Yeah, Telling women that their job was Anal, Swallowing loads and shutting up, apparently it says so in the Bible! Overall it, yeah, all added to the amazing experience that was the, yeah, 20th Anniversary of Wacken!

Mr Bogle’s Verdict-The only real disappo int of the weekend was missing the mighty Amon Amarth. A stage slot of 2am and a swollen foot on my part prevented me from seeing them

Eyelicker’s Verdict – I wasn’t particularly keen on the line up this year at first, due to there being, in my humble opinion, too much classic rock and unknown German bands. Many complained that because they sold out almost straight away they didn’t bother getting a decent line up, and this may possibly be true. There were other disasters as well, such as Jim getting tomato sauce form a Ravioli tin on my New Era cap, and none of my CDs or MP3 player working in Jims van, rendering us without brokeNCYDE or Attack Attack! For a week. Nevertheless, a great time was still had by all, and it was nice for the whole headbang team to finally do something together for the first time. We made friends, got f***ed up, and got crunk! Bloodstock has its work cut out!

Retrospect's days in far away Europe

Thai Rockband Retrospect’s trip to Wacken is over and I’m here to tell you something.

Bummer. As far as I’m concerned the guys of Retrospect did great on this year’s Wacken festival. Though I have to admit I wasn’t even there, I haven’t found any clips on the internet and I’m just biased. For now I’ve only seemed to be able to find a little note. It’s just them talking in some not-understandable Thai and I believe greeting and thanking the European audience.

You can expect more when I find it as I’m willing to spread some Retrospect-love!

Sześćdziesiąt pięć lat temu wybuchło Powstanie Warszawskie. Do dziś toczą się spory, czy był to słuszny krok, czy było warto. Zwolennicy i przeciwnicy Powstania przerzucają się coraz to nowszymi argumentami, czego jednak by nie mówiono, nie sposób odmówić odwagi, ofiarności i poświęcenia samym Powstańcom. Nie wdając się w dywagacje na temat słuszności zrywu, chciałbym gorąco polecić Wam trzy utwory oddające hołd bohaterstwu walczących o Warszawę.
