L.A. Guns – L.A. Guns (1988, PolyGram Records/Vertigo Records)

1. “No Mercy” … 2:47
2. “Sex Action” … 3:42
3. “One More Reason” … 3:07
4. “Electric Gypsy” … 3:25
5. “Nothing To Lose” … 4:14
6. “Bitch Is Back” … 2:53
7. “Cry No More” … 1:18
8. “One Way Ticket” … 4:20
9. “Hollywood Tease” … 2:52
10. “Shoot For Thrills” … 4:30
11. “Down In The City” … 3:56

Band:
Phil Lewis – Lead Vocals
Tracii Guns – Lead Guitar
Mick Cripps – Rhythm Guitar, Keyboards, Backing Vocals
Kelly Nickels – Bass, Harmonica, Whistle, Backing Vocals
Steve Riley – Drums (credited but did not play)

Additional Musicians:
Nickey “Beat” Alexander – Drums
Alan Jones – Sax
Paul Kaufman – Washboard

Producer: Jim Faraci

I’ve seen some critics call L.A. Guns a combination of Guns N’ Roses and Poison. That’s a pretty good description of them, though I think there’s a dash of Motley Crue as well. The Guns have always seemed to straddle the line between the seedy, sleazy life that GNR wrote about and the sex & party world of glam metal poster boys Poison. It makes for some good rock ‘n’ roll and L.A. Guns have never fully gotten the respect, success and credit that they should have despite having two platinum albums in their catalog (this one and Cocked & Loaded)… They should’ve sold more!

Anyway, this a really good debut. Phil Lewis rocks, guitars are great (Tracii also does not get the respect he should), there’s plenty of sleaze and fun for everyone! But the band has a softer side — there’s “Cry No More”, a pretty instrumental, to break up the album and it leads into the ballad “One Way Ticket”.

“Sex Action” was a small hit for the band, but I tend to think that’s an overrated song. It’s a good song, but I’ve often seen it mentioned as a LAG fave but I think there’s plenty of other songs here that overshadow it. “One More Reason” is my favorite from the disc. Cocked & Loaded is regarded as the quintessential L.A. Guns release. That album is a bit more catchy and melodic, but this one is heavier. I like them both equally.

Original LAG drummer Nicky “Beat” Alexander played on the album, but it was Steve Riley (coming over from W.A.S.P.) who got the album credit and his face in the band photo as he joined the band just before the album was released. Most of these songs were written with L.A. Guns’ previous singer Paul Black. Maybe that’s why Phil was able to get “Hollywood Tease” (from his previous band Girl) on the album?

Picked this up online for about $6. Definitely worth the cash. The cover is really cool too — you’ve got guns, a skull and a Hollywood night in the background. The art was done by Tyler. I wonder if he’s ever done anything else in the hair metal arena?

Highlights: “No Mercy”, “Sex Action”, “One More Reason”, “Electric Gypsy”, “One Way Ticket”, “Shoot For Thrills”

Endeverafter – Kiss or Kill (2007, Razor & Tie Records)

1. “I Wanna Be Your Man” … 3:06
10. “From the Ashes of Sin” … 4:09
11. “Long Way Home” … 6:14

Band:
Michael Grant – Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar
Kristan Mallory – Guitar
Tommi Andrews – Bass
Eric Humbert – Drums

Additional Musicians:
Butch Walker, Grace Sims, Tom Jane, Azeron, Skye Nicolas – Backing Vocals
Jessica Catron – Cello

Producer: Stacy Jones with Bill Lefler

Here’s a strange album for ya! Endeverafter are a fairly recent band that seems be torn as to what kind of rock that they want to play. Are they the next Fall Out Boy? Do they want to be the next generation of pop metal? Or would they rather play nu-metal or NWOBHM or post-grunge? Well, they aren’t sure yet and neither am I because this album waffles more than John Kerry, but I’ll get back to you as soon as they decide!

Don’t let the band’s looks and touring credentials fool you either — sure, they have opened for KISS, Poison and Cinderella but I have no idea what songs they would have played to win over those types of crowds when sound their sound has much more in common with Fall Out Boy than the previously mentioned bands. In addition to that, they’ve performed on ’80s rock packages like Motley Cruise and ShipRocked which makes their primary choice of music even more puzzling.

FOB is one of the worst bands to come out in the past decade. I have heard a lot of their stuff and it’s terrible and they’ve spawned countless (and equally terrible) copycat bands. The songs here with the FOB are just as bad as the real thing. Now, they did try to spice things up a bit. It’s not all alt rock/pop. A handful of songs break out of alt. rock/pop mode and get a bit heavy or at least bit more spirited than the majority of the album.

There is potential here. The band is totally Michael Grant’s show. He wrote all of the music and lyrics. He sounds way too much like Patrick Stump, but I hear bits of good hair metal (and good metal in general) within some of these songs. He just needs to decide what kind of band Endeverafter is. It’s too bad American Hi-Fi’s Stacy Jones, as producer, couldn’t straighten these young chaps out and tell them to pick a sub-genre and stick with it.

I totally took a chance on this band. Classic Rock magazine was hyping them up as the second coming of Poison and Motley Crue and that’s just not the case at all. Hm… Do you think it has anything to do with the band’s UK label being the Classic Rock-owned Powerage Records? Shame on you, CR!

Luckily, the album can be found fairly cheap so it wasn’t a huge loss. I would be interested in new music from this band, but I’d have to hear some samples first before buying.

Highlights: “I Wanna Be Your Man”, “Baby Baby Baby”, “Poison”, “From the Ashes of Sin”

Disc Two: Once Upon Atrocity—-Beginning with lots of atmosphere and mood, the song is another

Disc Two:

Once Upon Atrocity—-Beginning with lots of atmosphere and mood, the song is another build up that never seems to get anywhere…you wait and you wait and it almost makes you crazy…you yearn for the onslaught and wonder where it is….

Thirteen Autumns And A Widow [Red October Mix]—-Ahhhhh…there it is…the ‘onslaught’ comes in an overly orchestrated opus that changes the minute the voice enters the fray. The guitars become more brutal and the drums carry on at a much faster pace….the voice is classic!!! Dani never fails to make me shake my head and wonder who this can be possible. The song, like many others has many moods and movements….the guitars are much more apparent and Maiden inspired…this is nice. I love this re-interpretation.

For Those Who Died [Return To the Sabbat Mix]—-Brilliant vocal introduction and a regular almost acceptable guitar delivery that falls into the realm of heavy metal very easily. the voice, even at the onset is more acceptable and understandable…this does not last too long though. The voice of Filth is at his best…the contrast of one tone to the other is remarkable. The musical mood shifts of this song are amazing…the gallopping beats ala Maiden….this is brilliant…one of the best tracks on this disc.

Sodomy And Lust—-One of my favorite Cradle tracks EVER….This is heavily layered metal that takes oer your very soul. Dani sings or yells so fast you can barely catch a single word..this is wonderful…..the deep delivery of the guitar leads give the song a whole new sound….the dark and dank feel is inescapable. Dani is at his best as he concentrates on a deeper voice but when he lets loose, cover your ears. This is extraordinary. I love this song!!!!!

Twisting Further Nails—-With a large leaning to a more electronic Metal sound, you wonder where this is going. The sound literally bubbles up from the onset, the blips and beeps almost seem like a rape of the un rapeable. This is a Prodigy styled Electronic romp through a brutal song that literally strips the brutality and intensity of the track…I hate this!!!!!

Amor F. Morte [Lycanthropy Mix]—-Like a beautifully orchestrated soundtrack to a horror movie, the song hold just enough suspense and flavor to keep you on the edge of your seat. Dani delivers a vocal that is unforgettable….at times he is relaxed and almost sedate..at other times he is maniacal that you lmost o crazy…the addition of the voice of Sarah adds to the dramatic elements…this is fantastic!!!!

Carmilla’s Masque—-From the onset. this sounds much more like modern-day Cradle…the sound is almost relaxed and mainstram….crying for acceptance and play ability. the mood shifts of the song, even from the onset carry a flair of drama….the song takes some time to really get going…this is odd and not really pleasing to me.

Lustmord And Wargasm II—-Beginning slow, but rewarding you for your patience in a wonderful way, the song plays with yo until it explodes with sheer joyful noise. the intro to the song is plodding, once the music opens up you are pelted with pure unadulterated noise and black sound. The voice is extreme and at times almost unlistenable…..only the shifts of the music save it and make it masterful…this is fantastic.

Dawn Of Eternity—-With another slow interlude, the music takes patience and mastery to really enjoy the onslaught when it begins……the organ noises and the thunder add to the dark tones of the song…..you salivate waiting for the true arreival…..the drum track seems to lead the fray…you are so pleased when all hell breaks loose. The song is a relentless pummeling that leaves you in a true wet heap by the time it ends. The voice is even more dark and layered than anything you have experienced thus far…this is pure Black metal…somehow this band took a different fork in the road.

Of Dark Blood And Fucking [Stripped To The Bone Mix]—-From the very first note, the voice is all that matters to this song…well the drums are pretty freakin’ incredible also. The pace of this song will make you want to bang your head on a table, a wall, a tree…what ever is convenient. this is masterful and incredibly well remixed. taking on a Black Industrial Metal sound, this should be further investigated.

Dance Macabre—-Again, this song investigates a realm of music that needs more atrention…the industrialized mechanical manipulations of black metal. This is brilliant…I can’t find the words to tell you how impressed with this i am every single time I hear it…this is better than NIN or Manson could ever think of being!!!! Brilliant!!!

Hell Awaits—-Heavily layered and full of the regular movements you are accustomed to, this is an incredible and dense production. the sound of the bass is so deep, you have to use Q-Tips after hearing this…wonderful..a great Metal experimentation.

Hallowed Be Thy Name—-A cover of the Iron Maiden classic……I hate this!!!

**** out of 5

Lovecraft & Witch Hearts is a compilation dual disc released in 2002. Disc One is a ‘hits

Lovecraft & Witch Hearts is a compilation dual disc released in 2002. Disc One is a ‘hits’ collection produced mainly to fulfill the bands contract with Music For Nations. Disc Two contains extra miscellaneous tracks, limited edition tracks and remixes.

Disc One:

Creatures That Kissed In Cold Mirrors—-Slathered in the grand sounds of most of Cradle’s songs, the intro is a slow to progress orchestrated operatic themed horror soundtrack. This is billiant…the anticipation is overwhelming as you wait for the track to open up into something fierce….of course it never really does and only leaves you panting for….

Dusk And Her Embrace—-At once the song begins and gives you what you are thirsty for….the music takes on a brutal death march as Dani enters the fray with his deepest growl ever….the music is a grand orchestrated/layered metal sound that is irresistable. When Filth lets loose with his true annoying squeal, it is welcome and familiar…the guitars are brutal, all the while there remains an orchestrated hum behind all of the layers of sound. This is brilliant….Cradle have not made this brutal of a recording in some time. Masterful.

Beneath The Howling Stars—-Again, beginning with strings and King Diamond organ, the song does not linger long in a quiet beauty…the drums and guitars enter the fray intermixed with a VERY upfront vocal from Dani. The drums are literally in your face…they drive and propel the song entirely…the guitars almost seem to take a back seat. Filth screams, rants and squeals at such an intense pace, you only catch words here and there….the drums return and the song just evolves into pure chaos. this is freakin’ fantastic. The mood shifts and tonal changes make the song one huge interlude or movement in a grand play.

Her Ghost In the Fog—-Marking the familiar introduction of the now familiar male introduction piece, the song is literally a grand orchestrated masterpiece of evil and menace. This is brilliant…..somewhere along the line Cradle discovered melody and abandoned the free for all feel of the early recordings…this is tour de force of movements as Sarah matches vocals with Dani and turns the song into an almost beautiful menace of evil. WOW!!!!

Funeral In Carpathia [Be Quick Or Be Dead Version]—-From the very first note, catastrophe and confusion reign….the deepeness of the Dani introduction is astounding…where does he get this odd range from. this is remarkable….the drums are ultra fast and the guitar is a beautiful muddle of noise….remarkable in every sense of the word. The song takes on so many different movements, it is like a grand act in a huge play…the voice of Sarah, the orchestration mixed with the brutality…it will only leave your head spinning in a most torrid manner…this is brilliant!!!

The Twisted Nails Of Faith—-Beginning with an urgent tone and a cataphonic onslaught of spoken vocals, the song is an eerie made for Halloween soundtrack./ This is literally fantastic…the build up makes you crazy…the slowness of the emergence….the tease and then the onslaught…this is brutal. the layers upon layers of sound take over your ears…there is so much going on all at the same time. The voice is at it’s very best….Dani has not sounded this good in quite some time…i still wonder almost every day how he sings like that…Brilliant!!!

From The Cradle To Enslave—-With an almost alarming mainstream guitar sound, only the putrid vomit of Filth keeps this from being a reality. When he joins forces with Sarah, it gives such a senc=se of melody and harmony you can not help from being addicted to the sound of the song. When the music really opens up it is a catchy almost mainstream metal affair that makes your head bob and you air guitar fingers to emerge. This is fabulous. One of my favorite Cradle songs.

Saffron’s Curse—-Beginning with a rather sedate sound, once the song opens up you are smacked in the face with sheer brutality. With the layers and layers of sound and the irreplaceable voice of Sarah, the song becomes this huge evil opus that sucks you in and makes you study every twisted word on the lyric sheet. This is fantastic…the drums are freakin’ unbelievable…the guitars muddled yet driving…the keyboards have the spotlight and it is magnificent!!!

Malice Through The Looking Glass—-A+ for the title alone…what a wonderful play on words…the orchestration and produced atmosphere build the foundation of the song. When Dani lets loose with his scream you are just amazed with the ability of this Little Man….he is a rather small individual, but he is made huge with that voice. this is one of the most brutal Cradle vocals that I can remember…of course, the song has many movements and different interludes as it continues, but the basic sound of the song is always there. You can not deny the brilliance of this band! Some purists would dismiss them…for me they are always and will always be a favorite…so what if I’m a poseur.

Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids—-Sarah introduces the song with a rather menacing tone…the music enters the fray…then Dani and all HELL breaks loose. This is brilliant…the drums are so incredible…you wonder how someone can play like that. This is rather odd vocally…at the onset the voice is so layered and thick you wonder how they pull this off live…they never fail though. Dani goes from one extreme to the other…the movements of the song matching his vocal inflections. Wow…this is incredible…..a return to this sound would not be unwelcomed…it seems as if late, Cradle has adopted a more mainstream sound,…this tyranny and darkness fits them very well.

Lord Abortion—-A masterpiece of a song, never to be repeated. The intro is slow and plodding, but when the song opens up you are literally blown away by the brutality of the song. This will literally blow the top of your head off…wonderfully constructed and preformed, the song has constant changing moods and tempos…this must be incredibly hard to play and keep track of. Dani delivers a voice that is shattering and sometimes beautifully annoying. The tone of the song is brutal…at times Filth actually delivers a voice that is crystal clear…what the f*&k!!!! Fantastic!!!!

Sgt. Roxx are a Chicago-based melodic hard rock outfit that was active in the early ’90s. Though they never had a major label deal, there were able to release an EP called Push N Squeeze, which apparently has gone for big bucks on eBay. I couldn’t find a listing for it though… Maybe the few copies that exist have all found happy homes or maybe people just aren’t interested now that they can own the full EP plus tons of more songs on this remastered collection of songs recorded by the band from 1990-1994. Can you imagine shelling out $200 or so for the EP then finding out a few months later that that EP and so much more was getting a proper CD release? OUCH!

But let’s get to the music — it’s enjoyable, but nothing earth-shaking. Sgt. Roxx definitely treads on the lighter side of hair metal (though there is a slight Ratt influence) on the first half of the disc. They aren’t as slick & poppy as Danger Danger or Enuff Z’nuff, but I am constantly reminded of those two bands throughout that first half because the rockers just fall short. I have to admit, they do have a knack for writing ballads. “Movin’ On” and “Don’t Cry” are worthy additions to power ballad compilation.

When the band finally does muster up some quality hard rock, sometimes the lyrics themselves fall flat. On “Alright” we have a pretty good rocker but then one of main lyrics is “would it be alright if I made love to you?” What kind of lyric is that for a hair metal song ?! You don’t ask! You say you’re going to do it and that you’re going to be the best she’s ever had! Don’t be so sheepish!

What’s funny is once we get to the later songs, despite being recorded in 1994 when grunge and alternative was all the rage, you get to hear Sgt. Roxx digging their heels into glam metal and cranking out some really cool hard rockers like “Ransom” and “(Don’t Do) What Your Mama Sayz”.

Overall, the album is a mixed bag. First handful of songs are light, the ballads are good and second half really rocks like hair metal bands should (despite the less than perfect audio quality). Definitely worth looking into for anyone tired of pulling out their old Cinderalla, Poison or Ratt albums for millionth time.

Highlights: “All You Need”, “Movin’ On”, “Don’t Cry”, “Thinkin’ of You”, “Ransom”, “(Don’t Do) What Your Mama Sayz”, “I Don’t Know”

Na myśl przychodzi mi przynajmniej kilka kapel – Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Bad Company, The Who, Thin Lizzy. No i przede wszystkim Saxon.

Mocno przyczyniły się do tego albumy Wheels of Steel, Strong Arm of the Law, Denim and Leather, Power and the Glory oraz epokowy Crusader wraz z Solid Ball of Rock (z najlepszym metalowym hymnem w historii muzyki – Requiem (We Will Remember)).

Saxon to wie.

Dlatego niezwykle ciepło przyjmuję ich I Have to Rock (to Stay Alive) z płyty The Inner Sanctum.

Let Me Tell You What You Need
You‘ve Got To Set Your Spirit Free
Just Hear The Power Feel The Beat
Shout Out Loud And Stamp Your Feet
Cut Me Loose But Don‘t Let Go
I‘ve Got To Rock I Can‘t Say No

Polecam w wolnej chwili. Saxon nagrał całą masę takich utworów, ich namierzenie nie będzie dla nikogo problemem, a niektóre to prawdziwe perełki, które dorastają do takich hitów jak Long Live Rock And Roll, czy I Wanna Rock And Roll All Night. Stay heavy!

Prepare to take a journey through sound. We have many (well, five) destinations picked out for you today. This musical tour will take you to places unexpected. There is no unifying theme and your proxy-DJ grabbed these at random, or so it would appear.

So grab your bags and your Adderall and climb aboard. Your bags go in the overhead compartments or wedged under the jackass in front of you. Go ahead and toss that Adderall all over the tarmac. Where we’re going you won’t need an attention span.

Previous versions available here:

Mighty Dub Katz – Keep On Truckin’ (Streetlife DJs Remix)
Yet another face of the prolific Fatboy Slim. This single was originally released in 1995, but was plucked from the back catalog and given a huge rerub by the Streetlife DJs. Retaining the silky smooth DJ chatter (“Your funky DJ… in touch with your needs…“) and all of the original funk, Streelife adds some chopped up samples, punched up bass and some noisy retro videogame sounds. Included in both the original and remixed forms below.

This…is…soul. Keep on truckin’.

Remix:

Original version:

Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve – Bubble Burst
Interesting stuff, this. Erol Alkan, a well-known DJ and remixer, joins forces with Richard Norris (former label owner and NME writer) to make some vintage-sounding psychedelia. Unexpected to say the least, but also very, very good.

This track runs some 60’s garage-rock guitars over a rolling Balearic beat, which is topped off with vocals that wouldn’t sound out of place two sections over in the “R&B” section, right next to Ray Charles and James Brown. All the stuff that shouldn’t work together sounds so good you’re left wondering why nobody threw all this shit in the blender before.

Imperial Teen – Pig Latin
The best pop band to never sell a million albums. Imperial Teen was founded by Roddy Bottum, who formerly keyboarded with Faith No More. No one makes a better 3 minute song. Catchy as fuck, layered with attitude and never afraid to let their psychosexual tensions take the reins, Imperial Teen are what we in the musical matchmaking business call a “keeper.”

This is one of their more downtempo tracks, dealing with the whole “relationship” thing.

I don’t mind looking at you
Your hair sticks straight up well
This spray can is my favorite
Vonnegut to William Hell
I don’t want to be happy
I want to mess around
But these drugs have made me sappy
I do love feeling down…

Kraftwerk – Heavy Metal Kids
Does what it says on the tin, to the confusion of nearly everybody. Recorded live in 1971 for Radio Bremen, this audio anomaly features the icy keyboard automatons taking a noisy stab at making metal for the masses.

Using only their Teutonic attitudes and a shitload of electronics, the Werkers kraft (see what I did there?) a metal dirge worthy of Black Sabbath’s formative years. It takes about 1:30 before the groove kicks in, so stick around. The whole experience contains high levels of WTFness, so consider yourself warned. Oh, and also look out for the tempo shift around 4:30, which takes it all to another level. Headbanging for the pocket calculator set.

Yo La Tengo – Here to Fall
Yo La Tengo’s back and they brought their heartbreaking sagas, incredible songcrafting skills and some strings with them. First of all, this is no weeper. It’s actually a pretty straightforward rocker, utilizing a large amount of fuzzed-up, wah’ed-up guitar. It’s the string stabs that really bring the noise, accenting the guitar and playing off the piano’s contribution. It all sounds so amazing and yet so familiar, thanks to the strings which are just begging to be attributed to some novelty single from the late ’70s.

Don’t ask me why this all works so well. It’s just Yo La Fucking Tengo. It’s what they do.
