R. Romar 16/4/2009

Lakshadweep is India’s largest producer of coconuts. The coconut cultivation is done on 2,598 hectares for which the productivity per hectare is 22,310. Oil rich coconuts are also cultivated in the Lakshadweep.

Coconut fibre extraction and production of fibre products is Lakshadweep’s main industry. There are five coir fibre factories, five production cum demonstration centers and seven fibre curling units run by the Government of India. These units produce coir fibre, coir yarn, curled fibre and corridor mattings.

Due to its isolation and scenic appeal, Lakshadweep is emerging as a major tourist attraction for Indians. This brings in significant revenue, which is likely to increase. Since such a small region cannot support industries, the government is actively promoting tourism as a means of income.

Radio London travel news has just reminded me of the old imperial measurement known as the shed load; as in “an overturned lorry has spilt a shed-load of toilet rolls across the carriageway”. It’s a strange measurement, not only because sheds come in various sizes, but toilet rolls aren’t generally kept in a shed; unlike a shed-load of wood or a shed-load of garden tools.

As a rule Britain does have the most bizarre and obscure ways of measuring things. The up-tight ten-millimetre regulation pin-striped Eurocrats in Brussels have tried everything possible over the last score years and ten to make us tow the line, but it’s barely made a jot of difference, a jot being a smidgeon more than a trifle.

Things in supermarkets may now be labelled in kilos, but it hasn’t stopped us thinking in pounds. We buy our petrol in litres but still think in miles per gallon; and why shouldn’t we, all our road signs are in miles.

You can take away our measurements,

But you can’t take away our freedom.

Britain is a country that thrives on anything that doesn’t make an ounce of decimal or metric sense: pounds, acres, gallons, inches, hundredweights, hands, dozens, fathoms, furlongs, teaspoons, tablespoons, dessertspoons, knots, tonnes, drams, guineas, quarts, barrels, hectares, jiffies, ponies, pints, bakers-dozens, horsepower, Fahrenheit, demijohns, fluid-ounces, nautical-miles, yards-of-ale, fingers-of-fudge, six-packs, party-sevens and after-eights, to name what I suspect could be a mere handful of our obscure measuring systems; take these away and we’d be all at sixes-and-sevens.

Feel free to add to my list…

UPDATE!

I have received a very small handful of replies, and would now add to the list soupcon and the delightful dollop, nothing whatsoever to do with Dolly Parton’s chest measurement.

I would also like to clarify that a smidgeon is a small pigeon, as opposed to smidgen, the common name for a small midget.
